Mayoral drug and prostitution operation VEREENIGING.- The Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM) officials, SAPS, Traffic Department and the Home Affairs Department turned the Vereeniging area inside out on Tuesday afternoon. This was during a mother of an operation, dubbed the ‘Mayoral drugs and prostitution operation’ which was aimed at getting rid of drugs and prostitution in the area. The operation started with a well planned briefing by MMC of Safety and Security, Veli Mcera who stated that the operation is about reclaiming the streets of Vereeniging since they have been taken over by drug lords and prostitutes. “The objective is to fight crime through addressing social environment issues. Enforcement of council by-laws and illegal electrical connections are rife. It is a fact that these houses are operating in numerous illegal activities including water and electricity connections,” said Mcera during the parade session at Sedibeng College. Just after the briefing, police and other law enforcement officers were deployed to different points and Vereeniging was contained. All streets and houses which looked suspicious were raided. Illegal immigrants were taken in for questioning at the police station while brothels were closed down. Some of the girls found in these houses said that they don’t want to sell sex for money, but their different

backgrounds and upbringings had forced them to be on the street. Sedibeng Ster managed to speak to one of the sex workers who apparently stays with her son. “I don’t have an ID and my parents have passed away. If I can get an ID, I won’t sell sex. The situation forced me to be here. I know that where there’s

Crime reduction operation in action Lazarus Dithagiso
SEDIBENG. - The disposal of liquor confiscated from illegal shebeens in and around Vanderbijlpark policing precincts was recently a police focus. Constable Gertrude Makhale said, “The aim of the operation is to reduce crime in Bophelong and Vanderbijlpark as we are faced with an unacceptable increase in assault common and grievous assault (GBH) cases.” Beers being destroyed by police after shebeen owners failed to comply in terms of the Liquor Act.
At least 54 beer cases to the total amount of R8370 were disposed of. This should send a clear message and warning to all illegal shebeen owners who fail to comply with the Liquor Act against operating or selling liquor without a licence ‘Sizothatha sichithe.’ This is to prove how committed the police are to clamp down on liquor-related crime which contributes to causes of crime, said Constable Makhale. The police not only destroy the liquor but they further go on to issue fines to owners. Patrons are also are warned not to walk on the streets with liquor in their hands.

GROENPUNT. - Groenpunt Correctional Service hosted an Alcohol and Drug Awareness Day at the Juvenile Correctional Centre on Thursday. The day was a great success involving the police force, the community and the families of offenders. Speaking during the event was Acting Area Commissioner Poppy Mofokeng, who lambasted the inmates of correctional service, which was supposed to rectify their old ways. “Rehabilitation was created to turn convicts into better people. Take all the programmes laid before you and make use of them so that you can become a better person after serving your sentence,” said Mofokeng during the awareness event. Mofokeng was very clear that numbers had never benefited anyone in prison. The keys are education and the wisdom to learn from those who have been there before. Reverend Lefa Phetho was one of the guest speakers, others included former Orlando Pirates Football Club stalwart Edward ‘Magents’ Motale. Phetho asked the inmates to allow themselves to be breakable in order to accept their wrong deeds. “You are there regretting what you have done, allow rehabilitation to
do its work so you are a better person when you come out,” says Phetho. Motale says some inmates got arrested due to alcohol and drugs. He asked all those assembled whether they had ever met a drug dealer that uses drugs and it was clear that peddlers didn’t
use them because they know the consequences. Inmates were also given a chance to educate and illustrate their understanding of drugs and alcohol. They composed songs and some performed dramas and danced against alcohol and drug abuse.

SEBOKENG - 23-year-old Mohau Mafisa from Zone 7 says that ever since the house that he and his younger sister Portia Mafisa lived in was destroyed by a mysterious fire, he has been forced to separate from his sibling who now lives with a neighbour. The siblings have been living with their unemployed uncle Oupaki Mafisa who stayed in the outside room while they occupied the house. Mohau states that on August 24 a fire erupted, almost burning the house down and consuming all the furniture that was in the house. Oupaki says, “We would like to ask help from the community. I am unemployed and have no means to do the repairs so that the kids can move back into the house.”
Some of the neighbours of the family state that they have done everything in their power to try and help the family, but up until now there has been no light. Mohau says, “I now live in the small outside room and have lived here ever since our house burned down. My sister has had to move out because it would not be proper for her to live in the outside rooms with us. I would like to make a plea to anyone who will be able to turn the damaged house into a home for us again.” The family states that they would appreciate any donations that come from the community. “We will appreciate any help that comes our way, and we are not asking for money but for anything that can help us towards repairing the house,” ends Mohau.

Metro to benefit area: SANCO Lerato Serero
SEDIBENG.- The South African Nation Civic Organisation (SANCO) says that the amalgamation of the area’s four municipalities into a Metro will benefit its economy and improve service. A statement issued to Sedibeng Ster by SANCO Regional Deputy Chairperson Motsamai Maphalla says that the advantages of a Metro will present an opportunity to uplift the surrounding areas by ensuring that development plans are ward-based and equitable across urban and rural sectors of the
municipality. In the statement Maphalla also says, “The municipality has a potential to attract better skills especially in the scarce skills categories that include Engineering, Architecture, artisans and economists. We have serious interest in the outcome of the final result. We support the Metro because it will give the new municipality a strategic political centre and overall autonomy over its finances, plans and decisions. As deputy chair of this region I am confident that the metro status would give us a major boost.”

Celebrating our heritage Diversity Mduduzi Mathebula
VEREENIGNG. - The Vereeniging SAPS cluster celebrated Heritage Day on Friday in style as the men and women in blue were briefly excused from their daily duties in fighting crime. The celebration was held at the Vaal Show Grounds, where these crime-stoppers were given words of wisdom and courage to continue to do good. Lieutenant Colonel Thembi Nhlapo said, “It would be wise as police officers to know who we are, and where the force comes from and where it’s heading. The history and heritage of the men and women in blue needs to be created, told and secured by the very same people. Generations will come and go, our children will learn about the force and its basic objective,” says Nhlapo as she lectured the assembly. Police spokesperson Captain Fikile Funda says it was very insightful for them to attend such an event. After the lecture and words of wisdom officers in their different attire had a chance to celebrate their culture and past ways of living. Representatives of all 11 cultures - from
Zulu, Venda, Sotho and others. They danced and cherished each others’ cultures, giving each other will and support,
knowing the day would end and they would have to go back to and be the first defense of the nation again.

BOPHELONG. - Ten people were chosen to be part of the task team that would come up with ways to help relieve Ward 6 in Bophelong of poverty after it was chosen as one of the 50 most poverty-stricken wards in the province through the recently-initiated “War on Poverty Campaign”. The ‘War on Poverty Campaign’ saw a heritage celebration with a difference take place over the weekend at the Thusong Community Centre. Designers of hand-made crafts and traditional wear were given a platform from which to exhibit and sell their material to the community who had attended the event. Motivational speeches were much appreciated by members of the community who came to support. Ward 6 Councillor Kedibone Mmahlase, says, “Poverty, drugs and crime are the problems we are currently fighting in this ward. To come up with ways to fight the problems that the society of Bophelong faces, a task team was assigned by the Department of Social Services in the Gauteng province.” Mahlase adds that the aim of the event was mainly to show people that they do not have to wait for things to happen but can do things for themselves by forming different projects to create employment. Mmahlase ends by saying that the community of Bophelong has been very helpful by supporting every initiative that the task team comes up with. The event saw activities such as poetry, speech and drama, traditional and hip-hop dancing come alive on the stage.

EVATON. - Heritage is best celebrated by the older generation. This was recently evident in Evaton when Leratong, Utlwelang Bohloko, Kopano ke Matla, Samkelo and Residensia old age clubs came together in celebration of Heritage Day under the theme ‘Bakae basadi’? (‘Where are the women?’). According to one guest speaker Thelma Makhemele the theme was a relevant one. “A nation without its heritage is a lost nation. “Along the way we got lost and forgot where we came from, which is why we need to go back to our roots where we used the Bible to find the way.” The women of today must ask for direction from the older women as they are the ones that know it best.” Makhemele added that parents needed to build up their kids as opposed to saying negative things to them and breaking their spirit, adding that this was the reason why today’s kids were criminals and drug addicts. Allinah Matipidi says, “Our country is very rich in culture and heritage, which is why we have all come together in celebration. Today we stand together in celebration of our differences, which divided us in the past.” Traditional food from all different cultures was prepared, there was dance and music everywhere. A great sense of pride was displayed by everyone in attendance and people wore their different cultural attires thereby showing off the diversity in South Africa today.

Alleviating poverty through agriculture Moleboheng Chaha
BOPHELONG. - The agricultural industry has grown and proven to be one of the industries that can help sustain the economy. The Thusanang Community Project has committed itself to fight poverty using agriculture. This is according to project founder Shadrack Achuse who states that the lack of good employment opportunities forced him to think out of the box. This led him to start an agricultural project which would create employment and supply the big markets with fresh produce. “Bophelong is one of the most poverty-stricken areas in this region; this project helps the community by selling them food at a very reasonable price. We also supply schools that have feeding schemes with veggies,” says Achuse. The project has garnered two awards from the Gauteng Department of Agriculture for Processing, Best
Community Project and Agri-business Woman of the Year. They also received a cheque for R15 000 when they won the 2012 Community Nutrition Award from Nestle. Makume Anna is one of the younger people working on the project. She says that it has been a very interesting journey for her. “Although the 14 of us are only just volunteers at this stage, our aim is to see the project grow to a point where we will be getting salaries just like everybody else.” She adds that the money generated at the moment is used towards the needs of the project. “I would like to urge the youth in other communities to also get involved in community projects, especially those that have to do with agriculture, as it is a growing industry and will in time create good job opportunities,” concludes Makume.

SEBOKENG. - After receiving a Shadan belt from Japan, Sensei Buti Maqabe recently tested his strength by doing battle with a cow in his neighbourhood. According to Sensei Maqabe battling with this cow was to acknowledge this belt from Japanese representatives. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sports, Maqabe says not everyone is fortunate enough to clinch this belt. He says he feels very honoured to receive this Shadan belt from Japan. Maqabe believes it has inspired him to work hard and take Kyo-Kushin Karate Club to another level. Not long ago, his club – Kyo-Kushin - awarded those karatekas
who did exceptionally well in their respective competitions that they participated at this year. “I’m very grateful to receive this belt. Like I said before, not many people can receive this honour and I’m very honoured to be awarded this belt. My students are very excited and this has also motivated them to work hard. I told them that anything is possible in life as long as they believe in themselves. This is an achievement I will never forget,” says Maqabe. On the other hand, Maqababe thanks the Zone 11 community for supporting his club and also thanks the Katleho-Impumelelo Secondary School principal for allowing them to train at the school premises.

Vintage FC in hot water Zacharia Nale
SEBOKENG. - The Emfuleni Local Football Association’s Stream B - second placed Ventage FC - will be the first team this season to face the League Disciplinary Committee (DC) if the referee’s match report is anything to go by. Sedibeng Ster Sports has learned that the match official (known to this newspaper) claimed that the club’s players assaulted him after the game recently. This was after Vintage FC played to a 2-2 draw against EYA FC at the Zone 3 Stadium. According to the match official in question, Vintage’s players came to him immediately after he blew the final whistle. He says some of the players’ spat in his face while others slapped him. He said this incident was witnessed by some football officials who had come to watch the game and rescued him. The referee says hell broke loose when he gave one of the Vintage FC players a red card after he deliberately ‘kicked-off’ an opposition’s player. Sedibeng Ster is in the possession of the report to the league. This incident was confirmed to Sedibeng
Ster Sports by Emfuleni Local Football Association chairman Philip Ndlovu. He says that he received the report from the match official and has since referred it to the Safa Sedibeng Disciplinary Committee. To make matters worse, Vintage FC’s owner is one of the ELFA additional members. Ndlovu says this is not good for football and he warns other teams that the league is going to deal with teams that assault match officials. “It is true that I received a report from the match official claiming that he was assaulted by Vintage players. I’m very disappointed with the club’s behaviour because they bring the league into disrepute and we have to make an example of them,” he concludes.
