Thugs beaten to a pulp Pinky Mofokeng

SHARPEVILLE. - Mmama Morobi (52) from Phomulong had a nasty surprise waiting for her and her two grandchildren on Monday morning on their way to a local crèche. Morobi was walking her two grandchildren to school when two men approached her and allegedly threatened her with a knife, demanding money. It is believed that the two men known only as ‘Tobetsa’ and his friend ‘Sbuda’, were standing on the corner of her house waiting as if they knew she had money on her. The moment she came out they demanded the money which was R350. It appears that Morobi was so shocked and afraid for her life and that of her two grandchildren that she threw the money on the ground. The suspects took the money and ran in different directions. The shocked Morobi screamed for help and withinin minutes the neighbours responded and chased the thugs. Both of them were later caught in Rooistene and bea-

ten with any kind of object community members could lay their their hands on. Morobi says, “I am very grateful to God that we managed to escape unharmed. I’ve never seen the two men in my life and don’t even know how they knew I had money on me. I was just taking my grandchildren to school to pay their school fees.” The police were called to the scene and on arrival found the two men lying in the middle of the street covered in bloodstains. They were taken to the Sebokeng Hospital for treatment. Police spokesperson Rapule Pitso says, “The community must not take the law into their own hands. We advise them to bring the criminals to the police station so that the law can run its course.” The traumatised Mmama Morobi says that she will not be opening a case against the thugs as she is just grateful that they did not harm her two grandchildren and that she managed to get her money back.

MEYERTON. – Tears of joy and relief rolled over the faces of friends and family of Arshad Ali (37) after he landed at the OR Tambo International Airport on Saturday after he was abducted in Pakistan on his way back to South Africa last month. Sedibeng Ster reported recently about the plight of Ali who is a businessman and also ANC Chairperson in Meyerton. As he walked through the door at the airport on his way back home the relief on his wife Emel’s face was clear. “This was a very difficult time for me and I am so glad that he is back and safe,” she said. Sedibeng Ster had an interview with Ali when he arrived at home where friends and family came together to celebrate his return. He told Sediebeng Ster that t they stopped at a roadblock on their way to the airport in Lahore, Pakistan and individually they were asked what their names were and when he told them who he is, five men in informal clothes came to him, handcuffed him and covered his face so he can’t see them and took him away. When he opened his eyes he was in a small room. “The first few days I was sleepy, I think

they gave me something that made me sleep,” Arshad said. While he was there they asked him questions about his life. For 13 days he was kept in this room. Three times a day they gave him something to eat and only two times was he taken to the bathroom. “They did not torture me or hurt me,” Arshad said. It is believed that he was detained by the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI). While Arshad was missing all the info his family had was that he was under investigation. According to Arshad this was his third time was under investigation but was never found guilty for anything whatsoever. After eight days the people, still unknown to him, told him they were sorry and that they had received the wrong information and he must keep doing the good work he does in South Africa. On the thirteenth day he was dropped in the middle of the city. “I just counted the days and I am very excited to be back with my family and friends,” Arshad said. He also would like to thank all South African Media as well as the government who helped to get him back to South Africa.

While doing routine patrol they stopped and searched people in Becquerrel street and arrested a Nigerian male (36), who had 25 plastic parcels of ‘Nyaope’ drugs in his possession. It is alleged that the suspect was hiding the drugs in his jacket, and was selling it in the streets of the CW2 residential area. Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Kinnie Steyn says, “We are proud that these members left their offices and went to patrol the streets of Vanderbijlpark, it means they are putting their community first. We appeal to the community to work hand in hand with the police so that we can win this war against drugs in our streets.”

VANDERBIJLPARK. - Sedibeng District Municipality and the Gauteng Legislature in collaboration with the IEC (Independent Electoral Commission) and the Department of Home Affairs launched the Voter Education and Registration Campaign at VUT (Vaal University of Technology) recently. Amongst officials who attended were Stategic Planning and Economic Development MMC, Maipato Tsokolibane, IEC Provincial Electoral Officer Masego She-

biri and acting speaker of the Gauteng Legislature, Uhuru Moilwa. Moilwa at the event stated that the campaign was crucial especially to the youth as records proved that a large percentage of the youth did not exercise their voting rights. “The youth of today should realise that freedom did not come free. It is important that we educate people about the importance of voting. Failing to do so would mean that we as government would be creating a generation of people who are a danger to society and a mass

of people who would not have an understanding and an appreciation of voting and what it means.” Moilwa acknowledged that the biggest challenge the youth of today face is that of unemployment, and urged VUT students to get an education and excel in their professional fields. “Young people should not be demanding RDP houses from the government. What they should be demanding are jobs that they are qualified for,” added Moiloa. Home Affairs Representative Mpho Moloi stated that it was important for people to have their green ID books to be able to cast their votes. “Anyone who has a problem with their ID must report to their nearest Home Affairs offices. We are busy rolling out the new smart ID cards and we hope that by the next elections they will have reached all the citizens of the country,” concludes Moloi. The launch was subsequent to a door to door campaign in Sharpeville which saw officials go to community members to educate them about the importance of casting their votes in the up-coming elections. Deputy speaker of the Gauteng Legislatu re, Uhuru Moilwa, urged the youth to exer cise their voting rights at the recent voter education and registration campaign held at VUT.

DA’s message of hope

Moleboheng Chaha

SEDIBENG. - Democratic Alliance (DA) regional chairperson Dady Mollo has stated that the DA is ready for the upcoming general elections. Mollo states that the DA hopes to bring the ANC votes down to below 60 per cent in the 2014 elections. “We are the only party that has grown in every single election, and we will continue to grow. If all DA supporters are registered and vote on Election Day, the DA will win Gauteng next year. We will be able to create opportunities for more people.” says Mollo. “We know that Gauteng will not be the province it can be until we fix our schools

SEBOKENG.-The ANC recently launched ‘The Moses Kotane Zonal Volunteer Brigade’ named after Kotane who was a political activist and the general secretary of the SACP (South African Communist Party). These volunteers will be working towards the upcoming 2014 elections. Kabila Mgangane, Sebokeng East Zone ANC Political Education Officer, stated that the ANC would be having a host of celebrations to make the public aware of the importance of voting. “People must remember to go out and vote, especially the so called `Born Frees’. “In the apartheid regime voting was a source of oppression, but today it shows the freedom of choice that all South Africans have gained through living in a democratic country. The different celebrations have been aligned to coincide with the 1984 Vaal Uprising,” says Mgangane who concludes that people should practice their freedom by going out and exercising their right to vote.

9R_Na\ @R_R_\ I am excited as I go through an article by Fred Khumalo of the Sunday World Newspaper wherein he talks about ‘clever’ blacks and ‘dom’ blacks. I am not going to go into the politics of the whole article (my article is not a re-write of Khumalo’s), but just into the ‘clever’ and ‘dom’ blacks argument. Fred says

‘Clever’ or ‘Dom’?

that there is this friend of his that calls himself a Dom Darkie, except that he is sharp as a razor blade. In many townships that we live in we know that there is this ‘clever’ that has the latest models of cell-phones, cars and clothes, etc. This ‘clever’ (‘dom’ in real life) looks down on everyone and sees himself as larger than life. What everyone knows is that this guy left school in standard 2 (they call them Grades these days) during lunch time and never came back. The ‘dom’ ones (clever in real life according to me) are those that prefer to shy

away from the limelight while working hard to put bread on the table for their families, they make an honest living while remembering where they come from. They do not want to be associated with the ‘who’s who’ of this world but they work their socks off. I do not know in to which category you would fall if you were to classify yourself according to the two categories of blacks that are mentioned by Fred, but I sure hope you would not call yourself a ‘clever.’ Fred says that he thinks that his friend is a visionary as he started classifying blacks into ‘clever’

blacks and ‘dom’ blacks long before this was a presidential concern. There is nothing racist talking about this matter this way, as Fred says, In South Africa we are good at labelling people as it diverts attention from ourselves to the person who is being branded. So once in a while let us agree to agree with Fred that there are ‘clever’ blacks and ‘dom’ blacks, the difference is that we just call them ‘moegoes’ and ‘slim mense’ in township lingo. Lerato...

Jumping off the EFF ship Lazarus Dithagiso

SEBOKENG. – It is no secret that some members of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) have started to divorce their party to tie the knot with Agang South Africa. Apparently the EFF vehicle took off like a house on fire but now the nuts and bolts holding its wheels in place have come undone. The party which is led by Julius Malema aims to give the ANC sleepless nights. Mofokeng, a former regional election head of the EFF, was the first to quit. Mofokeng together with other members told Sedibeng Ster that they have packed their bags for Agang South Africa political party led by Dr Mamphela Ramphela. The lad who started his political career at the then Anti-Privatisation Forum (APF) stands by his belief that there’s no future in the EFF. He says the party has lost focus. When they were asked why they had left ‘the red berets’ (as EFF members are commonly known) he responded that there

were rumours that Malema might be trying to rejoin the ANC. “The man seems to have lost favour since the South African Revenue Service dealt with him so harshly. “I was not surprised to see Kenny Kunene jump off the EFF wagon while it was still moving. Yes, we started the party with the aim to give the ANC and DA sleepless nights, but lately the situation has taken a turn for the worse. We left our parties with excitement to join EFF but it was, later, like cold water being poured over us. The in-fights in the party from national to provincial up to local levels have caused an enormous negative impact,” he says. Provincial EFF spokesperson Patrick Sindane says, “These are the people pushing ‘empty-stomach’ politics. Agang SA uses desperate people like Mofokeng. It is good that they move out early as we are busy building a revolutionary movement, not a Hollywood or a closed corporation.”

I need the residents to help me. I am not saying that they must protest but they should make their voices heard.” Zondi believes that working together with the community of Ward 43 will bring progress to the situation. At the time of going to press Sedibeng Ster was still awaiting comment from Emfuleni Local Municipality.

SEBOKENG. - While political campaigns are taking place at every turn in the run-up to the 2014 elections, service delivery in the Sedibeng region is said to still be falling through the cracks. This is according to Beverly Hills Phase 2 (Ward 43) residents who have apparently been subjected to the bucket toilet system for over 20 years. The residents have called for the immedia-

ELM not responsible for job scam

Lazarus Dithagiso

VEREENIGING. - Two women who were desperately looking for jobs fell prey to job scammers. Palesa Tema (25) and Lizzy Tueng (29), both from Boitumelo, met with an agent known only as Mmaki. Mmaki asked the victims whether they had not seen two other women looking for jobs in the vicinity. The women sought were apparently supposed to fill in application forms to receive uniforms before they started work. The victims - Palesa and Lizzy - then became interested and told Mmaki they were also unemployed. Mmaki told them they would have to pay R2 000 each before filling in an application form. After that, they would have to pay another R2 000. They were promised that someone from the Emfuleni Local Municipality’s (ELM’s) Human Resources Department would contact them with the application forms. This never happened. Stanley Gaba, Emfuleni Local Municipality Head of Communications, condemns a situation in which members of the public seek to enrich themselves by pretending to be from the municipality. “No person, except Human Resources has the right to hire people and this is without any charges. My advice to the victims would be to open a case of fraud with the police. The municipality will never collect money from the public for jobs,” he says.

Taking a holy walk

SEDIBENG.- A grandmother will embark on a walk to thank the Lord this Saturday. 69-year-old Ntsamaeng Tsotetsi from the Rainbow Family Church was diagnosed with Arthritis 23 years ago and says that she suffered for years until she accepted Jesus Christ 20 years ago and since then, according to her, her arthritis has gone away completely. In giving thanks for the miracle she has decided to walk for 20 kilometers from Noldick in Meyerton to Beverly Hills, Sebokeng ta-

king the taxi’s route. This she says is to show the world that she received health in abundance and that most of the ladies her age would not attempt that distance. The walk is scheduled for October 12 from 09:30 from Meyerton (Noldick). Welfare arrangements and necessary support for the walking have been arranged.

Right: Pensioner Ntsamaeng Tsotetsi will take a holy walk this weekend.

beng District Municipal Executive Mayor Simon Mofokeng welcomed everyone including the most important guest, Chief Siphiwe Kunene from Zululand and Morena Khoabane Theko from the Kingdom of Lesotho. Ralekholela was ecstatic about the event, especially because they were celebrating culture and roots. Both Kingdoms dignitaries from Lesotho and Zululand taught the congregation about two or more things that dignify them as Africans. The word of God was delivered by Bishop Daniel Makutsoane.

DE DEUR. - Big and small, young and old, gathered at Gospel Fire Ministries recently to celebrate their heritage. The church was packed to capacity with high profile dignitaries and local citizens. The event was graced by people’s poet Mzwkhe Mbuli who appealed to the congregation to start teaching children about their origins. As usual he performed exceptionally well. The department collaborated with different stakeholders in ensuring the success of the event namely, Sisonke Early Childhood Development Forum, Mayor’s office, Speakers’ office, Protection services, Fire & Rescue and libraries.

The event was also graced by local councillors who advised every parent to become more involved in their children’s lives as that will build confidence and ensure a better future because the children are our future. The event focused on teaching the young ones on how to play different games such as how to skip a rope, jump in a sack, egg racing and aim throwing which will assist in building their confidence. Club awards players VUT duo qualify for world championship

Zacharia Nale

SEBOKENG.- Happiness Development Club held its annual Player Awards to recognise them for their individual achievements during the year. This club awards took place at the Zone 7 Library recently. Some notable footballers who graced the occasion included former soccer greats Simon ‘Bull’ Lehoko, Austin Mlilwane, Martin Mpholo, Jack Leboko to mention but a few. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sport, club director Vusi Jamekwane says the awards are designed to motivate these up-and-coming youngsters to take their soccer careers seriously. He believes that this is the only way to keep these youngsters focused. “We as Happiness Development are committed to the development of football in this region. The awards are partly to reward these boys for their hard work during the season and I wish to thank all the people who make this possible for us to host these awards every season,” says Jamakwane. Mokgadi Moshikidi was named Players’ Player of The Year for his outstanding perfor-

mance during the season. Jamekwane described Moshikidi as one of the most talented soccer players to have emerged from this region and believes that he has a great future ahead of him. Sandile Radebe was named Players’ Player of The Year after he was nominated by his teammates. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sport the two say that their dream is to play professional football. They say it doesn’t matter which team they play, as long as it is a professional team. “This award means a lot to me and has since motivated me to work hard at training. I could not believe it when my name was called. It came as a surprise because there are many good players in the team. I want to thank my teammates for contributing to my achievement,” says Moshikidi. Radebe also thanks his teammates for nominating him Players’ Player of The Year. “This is an honour for me and I will always cherish this moment in my soccer career. But this means hard work for me and I also want to thank my coach for believing in me,” he concludes.

Zacharia Nale

VANDERBIJLPARK. - Vaal University of Technology (VUT) runners have qualified for the World University Cross Country Championships scheduled to take place in Uganda in 2014. The two are Collen Mulaudzi and talented Xolisani Zamkele who produced a fivestar performance during the USSA Cross Championship qualifier held in Welkom recently. The two helped their VUT Athletics Club finish in second place during this competition. North West University was crowned champion, beating the likes of VUT and the Central University of Technology who, respectively, finished second and third during this event.

To add more good news, VUT Athletics head coach Joseph Diale was appointed Head Coach and Development manager of Legends of Athletics South Africa (LASA) recently. The man, well known for introducing unknown talent in this region, says hard work paid off. He believes his team’s achievement is based on hard work and nothing else. “These boys train very hard and they push themselves at training. I also want to take this opportunity to congratulate Collen Mulaudzi and Xolisani Zamkele for qualifying for the World Cross Country Championship. They really deserve this because they work so hard at training,” he concludes.

Ria Ledwaba in the making Zacharia Nale

SHARPEVILLE. - Ntswaki Thinane is the latest woman football administrator to own a soccer club in this region. This Sharpeville-based female football administrator is set to follow in the footsteps of other great female football administrators to emerge in this country, such as Ria Ledwaba. Just like Ledwaba, Thinane is the boss of the newly established Vaal Italian Hunters Dev FC. The club consists of the three divisions u/13, u/15 and u/17. To date Ledwaba was the owner of the Ria Star FC which campaigned in the Premier Soccer League before she sold it. This ambitious female administrator is destined for a great future if her passion for development football is anything to

go by. What places her head and shoulders above the rest of the women football administrators is that she also coaches her soccer team. In an exclusive interview with Sedibeng Ster Sports, Thinane says she has a love for this sport, hence she decided to form her own soccer team. This soft-spoken woman administrator believes that women should not own only women’s football clubs but also men’s soccer teams. “Many women think I’m crazy when I tell them I own a boys’ soccer team. Just because I’m woman they think I must be involved with women’s football clubs only. I enjoy working with these boys because they want to take their football careers to another level,” says Thinane.

Vaal Vikings hold development clinics Zacharia Nale

Rugby Development coach Christo Abrahams says his organisation is planning to conduct courses on referee basic training and a follow-up on the first training of coaches. He say South Africa is committed to developing rugby in all areas of the country and the Valke are looking forward to implementing this mandate.

VANDERBIJLPARK. - Vaal Vikings Rugby Club hosted a successful Development coaching clinic at the club’s grounds during the school holidays. The main aim of the clinic was the drive and vision of Valke Vice President (Development Portfolio) Koos Blomerus in conjunction with rugby Development coach Christo Abrahams and Dick Graham. The objective was to assist and coach the coaches of the local township schools in the art and laws of rugby, as well as to start basic and the training of children aged between 13 and 18. This three-day course attracted many youngsters from the township schools such as BeverleyHills, Esokwazi, Tsepo-Themba, Sizanani, Polokong and Vikings. The training incorporated basic rugby skills, team skills such as scrumming, where the students were more than keen to be involved and learn the value of te- Some of the action at the Valke Rugby Union Develop amwork along with gaining ment Coaching Clinic held on the Vaal Vikings rugby grounds recently. Call for coaching ‘indaba’ SHOOTING FROM THE HIP

With Zacharia Nale It’s a fact, social media has become part of our lives! One of the local development coaches – Themba “Danki” Dlamini - posted on his facebook that there is a need for a coaching indaba in this region. Shooting From The Hip supports Dlamini’s idea to organise a coaching indaba. In the past we had soccer indabas in this region but

things never changed because they were always based on the “administration” point of view. Sedibeng football needs a ‘makeover’ to improve the standard of football - especially as far as coaching is concerned in this region. For example, despite the high level of talent in this region we still fail to produce a Vodacom League team. We have everything; facilities are there, talent is there but the quality of coaching leaves much to be desired. The fact of the matter is that talent is wasted because it is in the wrong hands. We don’t have coaches but “FAKES”. Yes fake coaches! There is a Coaches Football Association in this region but most of the members are not actively involved. How is this possible? This Coaching Indaba will address such is-

sues among others. There must be identity and information when it comes to development. As things stand now – there is no identity including in our own Bafana Bafana. Shooting From The Hip has been saying this for the past 20 years - that there is a need for identity in this region. The kind of football we play is all about results! The fact of the matter is that we cannot blame soccer fans for staying away from soccer grounds on weekends because of the kind of football played of late. There is no creativity in our football because of these “FAKE” coaches who restrict talented players. A coaching indaba will address this among other issues – our identity. The MSC Soccer Tournament starts this weekend and you will see teams that get beaten every weekend winning this tournament

because they will go out to look for players. If Shooting From The Hip may ask - how does a coach feel winning a tournament knowing fully well that half of the players are not his? This is not the first time Shooting From The Hip has posed this question. Shooting From The Hip challenges Sedibeng Coaches Football Association to also play a part in the development of football in this region. Gentlemen, indoor meetings will not fix our football, but if you go to the junior soccer matches, you will then understand there is a serious need for coaching. Coaching does not take place in boardroom but on the field/ground. The sooner we call a coaching indaba, the better. Like Coach Ted Dumutri always says, don’t take those Facebook comments for granted because the people who posted those comments make lot of sense.

Junior Lions FC adds divisions Zacharia Nale

SEBOKENG. - Junior Lions FC, a household name in local football, recently extended its development structure by introducing the u/13 and u/15 divisions. The club is one of the most feared teams in the Promotion League in Stream B, known for their physical strength. The club has produced quite a number of players, some of whom ply their trade in the Vodacom League and First National League. The team used to conquer this region when it came to junior soccer tournaments in the u/17 category, but recently they have become an ordinary side. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sports, the teams’ Managing Director/Coach Paseka ‘Happy’ Moqholofane says there was a need for the team to introduce these two divisions. He believes that the development of players must start as early as the age of 6/7 years. “In the past we used to have only one division which was u/17 and this was before they graduated to u/19. Look, we used to have only one division - that is why we used to compete strongly because we gave them 100% attention. But I’m happy to introduce these two divisions because they will be our feeder teams for the u/19,” says Moqholofane. Meanwhile, Junior Lions FC is one of the teams that challenge the league title in Stream B and Moqholofane was optimistic that his side also stands a good chance to be crowned the league champion at the end of the season.

Zacharia Nale

SEDIBENG. - It is that time of the year when the local junior and senior soccer teams look forward to doing battle in the annual Sedibeng Soccer Tournament. This much anticipated Moso Consulting Service (MCS) sponsored tournament will take place at the Shakespeare and George Thabe Stadiums on Saturday. This tournament is one of the biggest tournaments in this region giving local soccer stars a platform from which to showcase their talent. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sports, Tebello ‘Benza’ Kheswa, one of the tournament organisers says this year’s tournament will be more competitive, taking into consideration the participating teams. Kheswa says as much as the stakes are high, the tournament is not only about winning but giving future soccer stars a platform to display their talent. He says they intend to invite one of the PSL development teams to be part of this tournament. “We want to take this tournament to another level Local talent will be on display when local junior soccer teams battle it out in the Sedibeng Soc cer Tournament on the weekend. Crusader for regional revival of football Zacharia Nale

SEDIBENG. - Former Vaal Football Association (VFA) administrator Sipho ‘Tigers Don’t Cry’ Nkumane is on a mission to revive Sedibeng football. This former Bafana Bafana manager believes that there is a serious need to revive football in this region to bring everyone who is involved in it together under one regional roof. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sports, Nkumane says he is aware that there are serious problems in this region among the people who run football. Nkumane says he is aware that there are two Emfuleni Local Football Association committees, the one that belongs to

Bushy Nale and the other to Philip ‘Mngoshii’ Ndlovu. Nkumane says his first mission will be to meet these two groups and find out their side of the story and try to bring them together for the sake of the development of football in this region. Nkumane, however was quick to point out that this is nothing to do with elections to become Safa Sedibeng president. He says he knows many people will say this is nothing but strategy to become Safa Sedibeng President. “Look, I know many people will think I want to use this opportunity to become regional president. I can assure you, I’m not intere-

sted in the position but I want to help bring our football back to where it belongs. I’m quite aware that things are going horribly wrong for football in this region. I’m also quite aware that there are two camps in this region, which is not good for our football,” says Nkumane. Nkumane says he realised this after he was supposed to conduct an administration workshop in this region last month. He says there were no club representatives especially from Stream A and that was when he realised there was something wrong. He says he will also engage school sport in an attempt to revive school sports to be part of the regional revival of football.

The Emfuleni Local Football Association’s Deputy President Phiki Khumalo also acknowledged the fact that he personally met with Nkumane and explained everything to him. “It is true that I met with Mr Nkumane because he wanted to know what is going on in this region especially Emfuleni. I told him everything and I even told him our position regarding football in this region. We support commitment to Safa - not to individuals as some people suggest. “I have been in football my entire life and so has Mr Nkumane. We will meet him with the entire executive committee,” he concludes.
