Poison kills learners
Moleboheng Chaha
SEBOKENG.- The sudden and mysterious deaths of Zone 17 Lesedi la Thuto Primary School Grade 4 learners Siyabonga Mbukazi (10) and Bongani Zilile (10) have left many unanswered questions. The children alleged-
ly died of food poisoning after coming home from school. They complained of aching tummies, vomited blood and were later admitted to hospital where they died soon after. “I want answers. My son has gone too soon. “I saw my son’s private parts shrink away,
particularly on Friday when the family went to wash him and at this time he was still foaming at the mouth and nose,” says the mother of Siyabonga, Portia Mbukazi. Portia states that although Siyabonga told them that he had only eaten
A griefstricken Portia Mbukazi recalls how her son Siyabonga Mbukazi suffered before he passed away as a result of alleged food poisoning. porridge at school, this could not have been the cause as it would have also affected all the other kids. “I believe that whatever these two kids ate came from a third party. My son came home on Friday and he was just fine, but later he told us that his tummy was aching. Later on he was rushed to the hospital. I was suprised to get a call on Saturday from the hospital telling me that my son had passed away. I have no choice but to accept that Siyabonga is no more,” she says. Bongani’s parents Leornard and Agnes Zilile also say that Bongani’s death came as a shock to them. “Bongani was not sick. “When he came back from school he was playing with the other kids, but later in the evening he complained of a stomach ache. We did not think much of it until he started vomiting blood and suffered from severe diarrhoea at around midnight. In the morning, when we saw that his condition was deteriorating we took him to the doctor and then proceeded to the hospital. “The doctor told us after he had examined Bongani that it could be food poisoning. Bongani later died,” says Leonard adding that when he asked his dying son what he had eaten, Bongani said words to the effect of ‘nothing out of the ordinary.’ Dan Letanta, who is School Governing Body (SGB) chairperson of Lesedi La Thuto says, “The death of the two learners is really a mystery. The school feeds more than 1000 kids daily so that could not possibly be the cause.” Letanta adds that all parents should see this as a lesson. “The problem here is that there are untrustworthy people standing outside the school yards selling unknown substances to our kids. I would like to urge parents to be more strict and tell their kids not to buy anything from these people.” A doctor at Sebokeng Hospital confirmed the cause of death as food poisoning. At the moment we are still waiting for a final autopsy report,” Letanta ends. The two boys were laid to rest over the weekend.

Big, fat, slippery ‘pad vark’
Mduduzi Mathebula
SEBOKENG. - A pile-up occurred when four vehicles collided on Wednesday night after a truck hit and killed a road-crossing pig on the Golden Highway. The mysterious accident left motorists wondering how the mishap had occurred. According to Emfuleni Traffic, the unfortunate pig left the tarmac slippery with pig fat which caused the four vehicles to slip into something “less comfortable.” No-one could be blamed for the collision and ‘Babe’s’ owner was nowhere to be found. The white Golf, the ‘inyathi’, blue Golf and bakkie drivers were seen “grunting” around the scene. “Who can be blamed for such a mysterious accident? The truckdriver fled the scene and we cannot even find the bloody pig’s owner,” snorted the furious
driver of the blue Golf. “We tried everything in our power to avoid the collision, but we had less than a split second,” explained one of the victims. The community wasted no time and collected chunks of the pigs’ meat as they were passing by. The pigs’ carcass was taken from the scene by ‘pig-headed’ members of the community of Sonderwater and Kanana before the police and traffic department arrived at the scene. Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Mzikhulu Mthimkhulu said a case of reckless driving has been opened and they are working on it. “A thorough investigation has been launched to find the cause of accident. At this present time Police could not confirm that the accident was due to slippery pig fat,” concludes Mthimkhulu.

ROSHNEE.- A tragic accident that happened on Saturday afternoon instantly cost seven young men their lives. Two vehicles collided head on, on the R82 just before Roshnee near Rus-terVaal. ER 24’s Vanessa Jackson says that just after 16:00 paramedics were called to the scene where they found an Opel Corsa hatch and a VW Jetta that had collided

The force of the impact had been so severe that it had left both vehicles extensively damaged. “Two men in the Jetta and five who were travelling in the Corsa did not survive their injuries and paramedics had no option but to declare the men dead.It is not yet clear what caused this tragedy, but local authorities who attended the scene will be conducting all necessary investigations,” Jackson concluded.
Seven young men lost their lives in an accident on the R82 on Saturday afternoon.
Man assaulted by police Lazarus Dithagiso
SEDIBENG. - Not all the police are bad but, apparently, some have been placed in the police services ranks for the wrong reasons. A 29-year-old Mmulane Mofokeng was arrested, pepper-sprayed, assaulted and his right leg broken, allegedly by Orangeville Police officers recently. Mofokeng says that he was walking in the evening with a friend when police stopped and searched them. Everything flew out of control when he asked the police officers why they were searching them. He said they suddenly punched and kicked him while he was on the ground. One of the ‘police officers’ pepper-sprayed him in the face before they manacled him and
loaded him into the back of the bakkie. That wasn’t all. They then drove to the Heilbron Police Station, where they continued to assault him.Expecting to appear in the Magistrates Court, he was instead released and told there was no case. Mofokeng said he was assisted by other people to the hospital before he went to open a case of being a victim of grievous bodily harm. “The case has been referred to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID),” said Sergeant Sellwane Mapamela. Eina! Mmulane Mofokeng sports a swollen and bloody face after allegedly being as saulted by Police officers.

Mob justice for Wrong Turn
SEBOKENG. – It sounded like a joke at first, or a group of confused young people, or it looked as if the ‘Wrong Turn’ movie had repeated itself without its script and a movie director. This was as the ‘Wrong Turn’ gang rose like a cobra and spread its poison farther and farther afield. Saturday morning was chaotic at Zone
7 and Eatonside. The angry community took the law into their own hands to take revenge for the spreading influence of the gang, who had been stripping the community bare. As rumours and incidents allegedly perpetrated by the gang shake the Vaal, the angry community wanted no less than their blood . The issue of ‘Wrong Turn’ stirred emotions so
A house said to belong to a ‘Wrong Turn’ leader was set on fire on Saturday as an angry mob pursued them in Zone 7. Members of the group were also arrested.

A woman in her 20’s and two small children managed to escape the house unharmed, but the man tried to extinguish the blaze with a handheld fire extinguisher. As he was trying to extinguish the fire, it appears that he was overcome by smoke and passed out. The Fire Department arrived, pulled out the man and handed him over to paramedics for treatment. He was then transported to Sebokeng Hospital for further care.

intense that anger seems to be an understatement. The angry community searched for the group. In Zone 7 two houses and a shack were burned to ashes and, in Eatonside, three houses and two shacks were set on fire. Police units from the Flying Squad, K9 and the Public Violence Unit were deployed to the scene to calm people down. The bitter situation worsened as time went by. Police tried to calm people down, but the angry community told Police they had nothing to say as Police had done nothing to prevent the crisis from its beginning. Police spokesperson Constable Tshifiwa Mitileni confirms that the situation was out of control as families had lost their properties. “We arrested 11 people for public violence and possession of dangerous weapons. They will soon appear in the Magistrates Court,” says Mitileni, emphasising that Police are totally against public violence. He further says eight arson cases had been reported and all cases are being thoroughly investigated by two Police stations - Evaton and De Deur. Mitileni says Police further arrested

EFF member arrested for assault Lazarus Dithagiso
VANDERBIJLPARK. – Diphapang ‘Parks’ Khaiyane of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) recently spent a weekend behind bars. He was charged with assault for causing grievous bodily harm. Warrant Officer Mzimkhulu Mthimkulu has confirmed the arrest. Khaiyane could not attend the official launch of the EFF hosted in Marikana, North West recently, where eight cattle were slaughtered for the launch of the new party following his arrest. The
arrest comes after Khaiyane allegedly refused to refund a person he had allegedly collected money from under the false pretext that he would ‘organise’ him an RDP house in Zone 24. Apparently the complainant met with Khaiyane and demanded a refund. This was when Khaiyane apparently assaulted him. Other witnesses complained to Sedibeng Ster about Khaiyane’s tendency, “to make empty promises about RDP houses before taking your money.” Emfuleni Local Muni-
DA councillor and mum still up for fraud Lazarus Dithagiso
SEBOKENG. - Democratic Alliance (DA) ward councillor Attie Moleko and his mother were left frustrated when their lawyer withdrew from their case of fraud. The two suspects appeared briefly in the Sebokeng Magistrates Court on Monday. The lawyer told the magistrate that he could not represent his clients after they allegedly failed to settle their payment. Councillor Moleko requested the court to give him and his mother a chance to get another lawyer. He told the court that he was broke and could not afford the sum demanded by his representative. The magistrate postponed the case for trial commencing November 8. The bail
cipality officials recently told Sedibeng Ster that more than 40% of the RDP houses in Zone 19 are illegally occupied. The illegal occupants apparently point accusing fingers at Khaiyane. When going to print Patrick Sindane, provincial spokesperson of the EFF and Khaiyane himself, were unavailable for comment. application of R1 000 each has been extended. According to the documents in court, the suspects were arrested and charged with fraud. The court heard that the suspects collected money fraudulently from homeless and disgruntled Evaton tenants. The Emfuleni Local Municipality investigating team was tipped off before arrests could be made. Moleko was arrested after some tenants pointed him out as the mastermind behind the collection of the money. Police said the municipal stamp was used to process the deal. His mother pretended to be a landlord charging the community exorbitant sums of cash. The court has informed eight witnesses that they will be called for trial.

‘Love thy neighbour’
My heart is bleeding, my eyes are teary and I have not been like this in a long, long time. This dark cloud of misery descended on me after reading a particular book called ‘Drug Mulled-Sixteen years in a Thai Prison’ by Joanne Joseph. The story is about the hardships that were faced by once Miss SA finalist Vanessa Goosen in a Thailand prison for sixteen and a half years. The book made me realise that not one of us is perfect. In the hardest of times there is something or someone that is guarding us and
that in the hardest of times we should have faith. Goosen gave birth in the Thailand prison. She had to teach herself survival skills in a country that is right at the end of the world - without her family and without being able to communicate with those around her. She was allegedly framed for drug trafficking, she suffered from severe depression and almost did not live to tell the tale. Don’t get me wrong, this article is not a review of the book, but a simple engagement on the issues that she faced, that we - you and I - face every day. Rightfully or wrongfully accused, my thoughts were consumed by the narration of the book. In this world we are deceived by the ones we love,
we rely mostly on people who are unreliable, we look up to the worst of people thereby ending up living misguided and worthless lives. I take my hat off to Vanessa for surviving the worst of jail’s in the world so she could tell the story, guilty or not. The moral of this is that we should all stand up and be counted, be strong and never give up even in the hardest of situations. Goosen never believed that she would return to her motherland, South Africa. She never believed that she would one day be free but after a long gruelling sixteen-and- a- half years of living in a rat-infested, urine-reeking prison, she survived - to see her now teenage daughter, to see her aging mother who had tried to commit suicide
twice during her daughter’s imprisonment. By my own acknowledgement the book is a must read. It made me come to my senses, it made me realise that life is precious. I am telling you that my whole perspective of life has changed. I have learned to appreciate more, to love more, to be kind to others, to watch the minutes that pass by and remember to do something significant with my time. But most of all, it has taught me to be humble and appreciate life. My heart is bleeding and my eyes are teary. ‘Hona le batho ba boneng mathata lefatsheng, rata wa heno jwale ka ha o ithata.’ Lerato...
Metro will not be a silver bullet
Lerato Serero
SEDIBENG.- Through their Regional Secretary, the Congress of the People (COPE) has announced that they welcome the amalgamation of Emfuleni Local Municipality, Midvaal Local Municipality and Sedibeng District Municipality into forming a Metropolitan City. However this is with caution. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster COPE’s Regional Secretary Ishmael Hashatsi says that the centralised governance system under the Metropolitan Municipality is welcomed and if effectively run it will introduce a catalyst measure needed to cut-out unnecessary wastage of taxpayers’ money in duplication of management positions by focusing the consolidated
resources of both merged municipalities where they are needed most. Hashatsi warns the community, however, that the Metro will not eliminate corruption nor will it make the lazy ‘deployed’ public servants employed at municipalities more effective. “The Congress of the People would therefore like to caution the community of the Vaal not to be under any delusion whatsoever into believing that the Metropolitan Municipality will be a SILVER BULLET solution to the mismanagement which have become the hallmark of our local municipality,” Hashatsi ends. African National Congress (ANC) Head of Communications in Sedibeng Themba Ndaba
says that the people of the Vaal must understand that this (Metro issue) is a continuation of an agenda to build a united democratic South Africa. He ends by saying, “This result is important for the residents of Emfuleni and Midvaal; not for political reasons but for financial sustainability, development and the future of our region. This is also a vindication to us that we were justified in embarking on the democratic process. The voice of the people was heard and democracy is in action.”
Right: Cope's Ishmael Hashatsi says that his party welcomes the decision of a Metro. He warns, however, that things should change for the better. fred43

Celebrating Mental Health Moleboheng Chaha
SEBOKENG. - Boipoloko Stimulation Daycare centre in Zone 13 collaborated with Sebokeng Library, Sebokeng Home Affairs, Khulisani and ‘I can’ to bring the first ‘Mental Health Celebration’ to Sebokeng. The event aims to inform and educate the public about different types of disabilities, opportunities available to those with disabilities as well as to celebrate their caregivers. “It is important that we create a social
awareness - that disabled people should also be celebrated and form part of society. The parents of these kids must be proud of themselves for not disregarding them and trying their level best to integrate them into society,” says programme director Tshehlo Theko. Thapelo Monyeke of “I can” Academy, which deals with learnerships for people with different disabilities, stated that although society regards people with mental
and physical illnesses as disabled, they should be called “differently-abled” as they are able to do other things and possess certain talents. Centre Manager, Selinah Tshabalala says, “We are happy to have had our first ‘Mental Health Celebration’ today. We hope that more stakeholders including local government will join us next year to make
the event bigger and more successful.” Tshabalala states that the centre she manages with Elizabeth Moleleki was opened about 10 years ago by parents with disabled children. “This centre was initiated because, as parents, we saw the importance of giving our kids a chance to get an education,” concludes Tshabalala.

Movie tackles Satanism
Moleboheng Chaha
SEBOKENG. - The ever-growing film industry will experience a breath of fresh air following the launch of the movie ‘Class of Hell.’ Dramatic Zone partnered with Tshungu Multimedia and Diraduma Productions to bring us a production with an applicable theme concerning recent happenings in the Vaal Triangle. According to writer and veteran actor, Nyembezi Kunene, the movie depicts the life of a student who abuses drugs and struggles with evil spirits. “There has been much controversy, especially here in the Vaal, about evil spirits, Satanism and excessive drug abuse by the youth. The movie aims to spark a debate of whether drugs fuel satanic behaviour or if the two are even remotely connected,” he says. This movie, which is proudly Vaal, was directed, produced and filmed exclusively by talent from the Vaal. The movie is the brainchild of Kunene, Mandla Mtombeni, John Hlaluku and Mashaola Makwela, who all contributed to different elements of filmmaking. “The collaboration of the three production companies happened because we wanted to mix the old with the new - veterans like me, and fresh young minds who are still learning about the arts, film and production,” adds Ku-

nene. Makwela says, “This is a pilot project we will use to create a portfolio for future endeavours and to request funding from relevant stakeholders as the movie was filmed on a zero budget,” he said adding that they hope to broadcast the film soon.
ESA's Sisterhood Campaign held an event aimed at creating cancer awareness as part of October Cancer Awareness Month.

VANDERBIJLPARK. - North West University and Educate South Africa’s (ESA) Sisterhood Campaign held an event that was aimed at creating cancer awareness recently. Madikgetho Raditsela, who is a member of the campaign states that, as part of October Cancer Awareness Month, they thought it vital to inform people about the importance of testing for different kinds of cancer. “Initially we thought that this event would be specifically aimed at women, but then it came to light that more and more men were getting affected by this disease, especially through prostate and testicular cancer.” Raditsela adds that a lot of people are still in the dark about cervical cancer, which mostly affects sexually active peo-
ple. “Through research, we found that it was more likely for younger people to get cervical cancer if they are inclined to be sexually active.” On the day, people of all genders were encouraged to test for cancer regularly as early detection of the disease makes it easier to treat. Sipho Malindi of Educate South Africa says, “Another campaign that was launched at the event was called ‘Real men wear pink.’ This theme was launched because we wanted people in general to move away from the perception that cancer only affects women as it is becoming evident that men are also affected.” Fact - Cancer is now the second leading cause of death worldwide and accounts for more deaths than HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria combined.

Washing their tiny hands Lerato Serero
ORANGE FARMS.- South African television celebrity Hlubi Mboya recently celebrated Global Hand-washing Day with Dettol at Madume Primary School in Orange Farm. To celebrate Global Hand-washing Day, Mboya joined Dettol to teach the learners the importance of effective hand-washing to overall health and well being. In South Africa, 30% of childhood deaths under the age of 5 result from communicable diseases. Many of these fatalities could be prevented if simple hygiene practises such as hand washing are followed. “So effective in preventing disease is proper hand washing that the process has become known as the ‘do-it-yourself vaccine’ and potential positive implications for overall improved health and wellness is significant,” says Dr Kgosi Letlape, ophthalmologist and current President of the African Medical Association
on behalf of Dettol South Africa. Hand-washing with soap and water is the most efficient and cost effective way to prevent the spread of infections like diarrhea and respiratory tract infections. The six steps to proper hand-washing are: 1. Wet your hands with warm water and apply a small amount of liquid soap 2. Rub your palms together vigorously (away from the water) to make a lather 3. Rub every part of your hands including the backs of your hands, your thumbs, between your fingers, and under and around your nails 4. Continue for at least 20 seconds. It takes that long for the soap and scrubbing action to dislodge and remove the germs 5. Rinse your hands well under clean, running water 6. Dry your hands thoroughly using a clean, dry towel

SEBOKENG. - ArcelorMittal Science Centre hosted a Matric Camp spanning over two weeks under the guidelines of the Department of Education. Over 1067 learners assembled to revise past matric papers. An 86% pass-rate could be a great achievement for District 8 and District 7. Site manager Tsotang Musa said he tried to be very precise and accurate concerning the department’s guidelines. “We are hoping to clinch an 86% pass-rate. The camp’s aim is to revise all previous papers, which makes it easier for learners to read, understand and answer questions. This camp will prepare learners for their exams. They will
write soon and we are hopeful, that we have covered everything,” says Musa. The camp has been going on for about four years and it will eventually positively affect the system,” says the site manager. The Science Centre was packed to capacity. All classes were well conducted - from Mathematics, Science, Biology, History, Business and Accounting, including languages. Sedibeng Ster secretly attended one of these classes and though most learners cooperated, children will always be children. Musa says they catered for both Districts 7 and 8, with about 17 schools in attendance.

Hell no, ‘Nyaope’ is not a football nickname SHOOTING FROM THE HIP With Zacharia Nale
Gone are the days when soccer fans would give their favourite soccer stars nicknames relevant to this beautiful game in admiration of their talent and skill - but not any more. For the uninformed, nicknames brought some excitement to football if one recalls nicknames such as Killer, Roller-Way, Teenager, Ys-
ter, Mr Cool, Road Block, The Great, Computer and the list goes on. These are the nicknames that used to catch our imagination when football was viewed as a form of entertainment played for the love of it - not money. Shooting From The Hip was taken aback when a coach and players called one of their teammates ‘Nyaope’ over the weekend. Hell no! Where are the exciting nicknames if coaches call their players ‘Nyaope’? There are so many nicknames to give to these youngsters instead of nicknaming them after harmful substances such as ‘Nyaope’. Look, our footballers deserve better nicknames that will inspire these up-and-coming youngsters to realise their dream to play in the highest level of football. But if we give them nicknames like ‘Nyaope’, are we inspiring or
killing their talent? It means coaches condone these youngsters’ actions off the field. Still on nicknames, Shooting From The Hip was also very disappointed to hear a development coach saying “fancy football doesn’t win games”. Please! If there is coach who thinks like this, you must know that he is a “fake”. He is not a development coach because he doesn’t believe in natural talent. What is fancy football? (if Shooting From The Hip may ask). Shooting From The Hip immediately confronted this coach and he knows himself. Hello, can a development coach really say this to his colleagues? This is a clear indication that some coaches are in football by mistake. Coaches like these are not good for our football. Shooting From The Hip is not sure if there is something like “fancy” football as this coach
suggests. The only thing that Shooting From The Hip knows is creative football where youngsters are allowed to express themselves without thinking of results. What is ‘development’ teaching to these youngsters if a coach says “fancy” football doesn’t win games? Are development coaches forgetting that at this level we must allow these youngsters to express themselves and entertain the spectators? For example, most of the teams that are out of the tournament play entertaining football This coming weekend it is the u/17 soccer tournament and I can tell you now – we are not going to witness the number of goals scored by the u/13s and u/15s because coaches will want to win at all costs. Fancy football my Foot!
Tournament attracts hundreds of children

SEDIBENG. - The MCS Sedibeng Soccer Tournament brought excitement to local football with a total of five-hundred-and-seventysix (576) kids taking part in this talk-about-town tournament that is under way at the Shakespeare Stadium. The tournament continued over the weekend with the u/15 soccer teams battling for the quarter-final spot. A total of ninety-six (96) goals were scored between Saturday and Sunday. Last week Sedibeng Ster Sport reported that seventy-one (71) goals were scored by the u/13s in just two days. The tournament has attracted many local soccer fans including parents who, despite chilly and rainy weather, came in numbers to support these future stars on Saturday and Sunday. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sports, Tebello Kheswa says this tournament has caught the attention of scouts in PSL. “We have received calls from some development coaches who are interested in coming out and scout for talent. The good news is that this year’s tournament saw soccer teams from the white community participate for the first time,” concludes Kheswa. The u/15s that qualifed for the quarter-finals are Mighty Stars, Golden Eagles Arrows, Manyora, Happy Stars, Nale Academy, Celta Vigo Dev Centre, Ikageng Dev, and Abafa Ba Style. Meanwhile, this weekend is the turn of the u/17 soccer teams to battle it out for quarter-final spot at Shakespeare Stadium.

VANDERBIJLPARK. - North-West University (NWU)-Vaal Campus came to a standstill on Friday when Kaizer Chiefs hit the campus. The occasion was when these two organisations officially announced their partnership to construct the Chiefs Centre of Innovation on the NWU-Vaal Campus. This pioneering initiative is a first-of-itskind for both sport and higher education in the country and will see the establishment of a multi-purpose, Chiefs dedicated walk-in centre on the Vaal campus, which is one of the leading and largest educational institutions. The partnership between Kaizer Chiefs and the NWU signifies two brands coming together for the creation of synergy. Speaking during the launch, the executives of the two organisations articulated their enthusiasm for the partnership. Kaizer Chiefs’ executive chairman Kaizer Motaung says it is a milestone in the history of the club co-
ming together to team up with an institution of this magnitude, NWU Vaal, in pursuit of a very noble cause in terms of the empowerment of sports people. “This Innovation Centre will be instrumental in getting us glued to the community, especially in this area that has a very rich history of football such as Vaal. In the 60s, 70s and the 80s the Vaal area produced lot of footballers. The partnership will benefit the broader community. It is about empowerment of sports people and the community at large. This is also part of the expansion process that we have embarked upon,” said Motaung. Kaizer Chiefs Football Club Marketing Director Jessica Motaung summed it up when she said the vision of the Kaizer Chiefs was a Centre of Innovation: “We are excited at the launch of this relationship,” she said adding that the relationship augurs well in terms of expanding the club brand and bringing the two institutions together.
