SHARPEVILLE. - It’s less than a year and three months since Mary Leburu’s family of five orphans were blessed with a house in Tshepiso, Sharpeville, last July, by two local mayors, Simon Mofokeng (Sedibeng District Municipality) and Greta Hlongwane of the Emfuleni Local Municipality. A dark cloud hovered over the family last week when their house was the scene of a fire caused by a candle, destroying most of what they had. The
accident happened while the older sister who acts as the mother and father to her siblings was at church. The loud cries of Leburu’s siblings drew the 23-year-old sister, who sensed they were in trouble. Leburu has looked after her three siblings - Kakgiso 17, Joseph 14, Keke 9 - and her own child Tsegofatso for five years. Now there is a persistent outcry from the community at the plight of the poor young woman. “The fire destroyed one room of the two-roomed house, which complicates
matters more, as these children have no income other than a miners’ grant. Upon Sedibeng Ster’s arrival the house windows were totally smashed due to fire and the holes closed with boxes and wood. Phindelani Maduna, a concerned neighbour, appealed to the community and everyone to help out. “These children need our hel and we appeal to local government and business people to assist. This burden is too much for one person to carry,” says Maduna.

A suspect is wanted for an alleged rape that occurred in Bedworthpark. Triumph over examinations is dependent on effective time management and clever study methods. As the 2013 matriculants approach the examination phase, it is worth reflecting on the nature of life itself. Life is but a voyage of tests and tribulations we need to face with courage and determination. The next few weeks will see thousands of South Africa’s youngsters showcasing just how ready they are to take the country for-
ward as they mark the end of their high school education and seek to open the doors of tertiary education. The days leading up to the exams are often fraught with extreme levels of stress and anxiety. Matric exams are probably the most crucial and vital examinations that they will ever write since these eventually determine their lifelong career options. Parents and siblings need to play their part by ensuring that the home environment is conducive to study. We are continually faced with making tough decisions and choices. It is not difficult to make the right choice if you know what your values are! Stay committed to your values but remain flexible in your approach. “There is no end to education. It is not that you read a book, pass an examination, and finish this examination. The whole of life, from the moment you are born to the moment you die, is a process of learning.” While trying to come up with a word of

encouragement for the class of 2013, I came across a very motivational quote by Tim Robbins that says, “There’s always the same amount of good luck and bad luck in the world. If one person doesn’t get the bad luck, somebody else will have to get it in their place. There’s always the same amount of good and evil, too. We can’t eradicate evil, we can only evict it, force it to move across town. And when evil moves, some good always goes with it. But we can never alter the ratio of good to evil. All we can do is keep things stirred up so neither good nor evil solidifies. That’s
when things get scary. Life is like a stew, you have to stir it frequently, or all the scum rises to the top.” Having said this, remember: “Desire is the key to motivation, but it’s determination and commitment to an unrelenting pursuit of your goal - a commitment to excellence - that will enable you to attain the success you seek.” Therefore regard the coming examinations as an opportunity to test your commitment and drive. From me and the team at large, a very good luck to you. Lerato...

Brain-damaged by rapist Mduduzi Mathebula
LAKESIDE. - The grandmother of a 23-yearold girl recently cried her lungs out to Sedibeng Ster. She called for help after her granddaughter was supposedly raped and assaulted by an unknown ‘boyfriend’. Victim (Lucia Zulu) is alleged to have been beaten with a hammer after being raped by an “unknown boyfriend”. The wounded girl’s face was covered in blood from head-wounds. She was unable to recount what had happened to her. Everything turned into a nightmare and her mental capacity has been reduced to that of a toddler. Grandmother (Magritte Zulu) says her granddaughter left the house on a Saturday morning recently, promising to come back later. “She usually leaves and comes back. She also keeps in touch with me. I was puzzled when I checked the time and saw it was around 21:00 and she had not yet called me. In the morning a young blood-dripping girl opened the house door. It was my granddaughter, Lucia. She had a head wound. When asked what had happened, she said her boyfriend had beaten and raped her,” says Magritte. The trauma-

tised ‘gogo’ ran out of the house to seek the help of neighbours and family friends. The young Lucia could no longer say a word. She had lost her mind. Sedibeng Ster visited the victim’s house three days after the attack and the young Lucia did not know where she was or what was happening to her. When asked what had happened, she claims that a man forced her to ‘be his girl’, had sex with her and repeatedly told her not tell anyone, or he would make her vanish. The grandmother says she tried all kinds of help from the police and Social Development since her granddaughter no longer talks sense. “All I need is justice to prevail and the suspect to be arrested and receive his punishment. My granddaughter is mentally ill now. The suspect needs to be apprehended and to pay the price,” says Magritte. *Magritte Zulu and Lucia Zulu are not their real names.

SEBOKENG. – After the retaliation of an angry community, where about eight properties were burned to cinders at Eatonside and Zone 7, the local government and Police - including Emfuleni Traffic - agreed to hold a public meeting. The meeting was held at old Makgwabeng Shops in Zone 7 where Emfuleni Local Municipality Speaker Msebenzi Gqoloshe chaired the meeting. The place was packed with members of the community who could not wait to unleash their grievances to the SAPS and local government. Gqoloshe opened the meeting to the masses just after Public Safety and Security MMC Veli Mcera declared his mandate to the people. “I will not tolerate misconduct. What has transpired is totally unacceptable. The community retaliating in that manner is wrong. There are families involved who
are going to suffer through this mayhem of ‘Wrong Turn’. Burning houses and taking the law into your own shands can not help, but will cause more harm to innocents,” said Mcera. He adds that the community should help Police resolve the matter. He asked the community to start forming street committees, which would be vital to Police. Community members say they had no alternative but to retaliate. “We got our freedom through hardship, pain and sorrow. We are not scared of ‘Wrong Turns’. We are not intimidated by young boys who are confused. If they did not see and hear us, we will strike further and will go for a kill,” says one community member whose identity had to be hidden for safety reasons. The masses allege that Police had failed in the ‘Wrong Turn’ issue and that they were obliged to strike back.

A conflict of interest? Lerato Serero
VANDERBIJLPARK.- It seems that the Democratic Alliance (DA) will never, as they have undertaken, let go of the issues surrounding the merger between Sedibeng District Municipality, Emfuleni and Midvaal Local Municipalities. A statement issued by the DA Gauteng leader Mmusi Maimene last week says that the Municipal Demarcation Board Chairperson Landile Mahlangu holds a conflict of interest in the current municipal merger. “ MDB chairperson Landiwe Mahlangu is a non-executive member of a company called Sea Kay Holdings which provides services to various clients, including low-cost government housing. This has included contacts within the Emfuleni Local Municipality. Furthermore Mahlangu is a non-executive member on the board of a company called Interwaste. According to Emfuleni’s 2012/13 annual report, Interwaste operates the Waldrift landfill site in Emfuleni Municipality,” says the statement by Maimane. The DA believes that this

ORANGE FARMS. – A young man named Lawrence Khekhe from Evaton IT Solutions keeps on doing right by others with what he has, and celebrated his birthday with those who have far less at Orange Farms at the Love Life premises in Extension 6. Evaton It Solution was born years ago through the initiative of two computers masters Khekhe and Bhekani Mathebula. This was to uplift the community with skills and knowledge within the computer world. Khekhe and Mathebula initiated a movement that caters for the needy and hopeless. The main aim of the foundation is to generate awareness in the community that there are pe-
ople living below the breadline, while some people have more than enough. The foundation and Love Life organised fun days for more than 150 children from different non-government organisations, NGOs. This day was made successful by different stakeholders who took part. The most loved game was clearly soccer, which claimed most of the children’s attention, while others had fun with the indigenous games brought by ArcelorMittal - Science and Mathematics mind games. “I’m very humbled by the turnout and the participation of children,” Khekhe said during his welcoming of guests at the event. “It takes a child to raise a child,” says the foundation founder.
The team behind Lawrence Khekhe Education, it was Khekhe that made the success of the day together with Love Life.

sitions. Both the Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM) and the MDB have dismissed these allegations as hog-wash. ELM Assistant Manager for Media Relations Klaas Mofomme says, “It is true that Interwaste is doing business with us in one of our landfill sites. Their contract expired in April this year and we have been doing business with them on a month-to-month contract.” Mofomme ends by adding that according to their records, Mahlangu’s name does not appear anywhere on the board of directors or non-executive members of Interwaste and that as far as the municipality is concerned, they have not done any business with Mr Landiwe Mahlangu as alleged by the DA.

he Vaal University of Technology’s Institute of Chemical and Biotechnology (ICBT) is one of the areas within the University that has tremendous potential to combat poverty in the Sedibeng and the greater Vaal region through entrepreneurship. The ICBT partnered with Sedichem to ensure that this goal is achieved. To affirm this statement, ICBT celebrated five of its incubatees who showcased their products, which started as potential ideas on 10 October 2013 at Sedichem in Sebokeng. It is heart-warming to learn that one of these incubatees is a VUT Engineering student. The incubatees are conducting different businesses such as germination for indigenous plants, massage oil formulations, steel manufacturing and planting of ingredients for massage oils. What is common about these go-getters is that they all had an idea or a vision but lacked resources that will enable them to realize those dreams. Businesses such as these not only generate revenue but also mainly create job opportunities to boost the Vaal economy. In a brief interaction with incubatees they all shared the same sentiments that they could not have come thus far had it not been for Sedichem. Professor Joe Modise, Director at ICBT and Manager at Sedichem congratulated the incubatees for an invaluable job well done. He applauded them for their bravery, boldness, resilience, persistence and eagerness to succeed. He offered an overview of each business and its product,
rigorous tests that each went through and the processes involved till the final stage of the product. This is what he had to say, “We are celebrating incubators who came with an idea which was made possible by taking risks and did not allow failure to define who they are. Come with an idea and we will see how we can help you.” He expressed his appreciation to VUT chemistry department for their unwavering support. Professor Modise thanked his team for working tirelessly. He also acknowledged the support he received from the management. This auspicious occasion was attended by incubatees, provincial government representatives, Emfuleni municipality representatives, VUT management, staff and community members. All keynote speakers of the day emphasized how important it is for the community to develop their ideas for the growth and development of their very own communities. They also reiterated the fact that in this day and age our country cannot afford to be turn into a welfare state; the society needs and develop movers and shakers who will be change agents for the betterment of the society.

Mduduzi Mathebula
VANDERBIJLAPRK. - Kutlwano Moloi was crowned the sexiest and most beautiful, the most versatile model recently at the VUT Desmond Tutu Auditorium Main Hall. Moloi shone among all the finalists of the Miss VUT FM Competition, clinching Miss Personality and Miss VUT 2013. Prizes were immense and all ladies gave it their all to win - but only one stood out. The competition was divided into two - the online and the main event. Online winner Pa-
lesa Mkhonza walked away with a Golden Vision portfolio shot, while runners-up Eve Rasimine took R1 000 and third princess Nongcebo clinched a gym contract. However, at the main event judges had much to work on, as the competition was taut and very exciting. Station Manager Mxolisi Ndongenin said everything that took place resulted from hard work and determination. The show furnished performance from the likes of Bozza from Kwatta Camp, Shoda and Fezile from SABC sports.
Former queens and princesses graced the show as Moloi took the crown and shone with it. She walked away with a laptop, an Ipad, a Samsung x4, driving school lessons, a Hair and Nails makeover, a modelling contract
with EFGY Modeling and a weekend away with Emerald Resort. The delighted new queen was accompanied by her family and her father could not restrain his emotions when they announced the winner.

Sasol and the DTI develop SMMEs
SASOLBURG.- The Department of Trade and Industry (dti) and Sasol inaugurated the ChemCity Business Incubator (CBI) in Sasolburg that will support and promote the development of small, medium and micro-size enterprises (SMMEs) last week. Minister of Trade and Industry, Dr Rob Davies and Sasol Group Executive: Group Public Affairs, Maurice Radebe, opened the first building of the Sasol CBI. The R60-million facility forms part of the dti’s national campaign to roll out 200 businesses. Sasol, contributing R41-million, will develop and manage the facilities as part of its contribution to sustain development. Upon completion, the CBI will consist of five separate buildings on ChemCity’s 172 hectare Eco-Industrial Park in Sasolburg. The CBI will cater for start-ups and early
stage SMMEs that operate in a variety of different sectors, focusing on the chemicals, energy and related sectors as well as manufacturing, agri-business and food processing sectors. ChemCity is Sasol’s enterprise and supplier development vehicle that develops new BEE suppliers and supports existing BEE suppliers through business development initiatives, technology improvements and funding. In addition, ChemCity incubates start-up businesses and since 2005, has supported or established over 700 SMMEs which have created over 12 500 direct jobs.

Brand new temporary safe care house Schalk le Roux
SASOLBURG. - Child Welfare South Africa: Sasolburg, recently opened a new temporary safe care house for abused, neglected and abandoned children. The aim of the house is to run a 24-hour emergency service for children in need of care and protection. In the process of responding to calls of abused, neglected and abandoned children, they are always faced with the challenge of where to place these children. When they fail to trace family members or a willing family in the community, the children have to be transported to Virginia, Qwa Qwa, or Bloemfontein, which makes reunification services difficult and costly.
It therefore became apparent that a facility to serve this purpose was needed. The house will cater for abused, neglected and abandoned children below the age of 14. “Today is an exciting day to formally open the house to the children in need of care and protection,” said Zimbini Zwane. The house was purchased by the NLDTF (Lotto), furnished by Sasol and repaired by Omnia and Louw Construction. “We are thankful to all companies who supported us,” Zimbini Zwane added. They are still in need of groceries, towels, face cloths and other bath products, curtains, kitchenware, bedding and linen, baby cots, accessories and products, emergency kits, garden tools and, lastly, toys for the children.
BOPHELONG. - The agricultural industry has grown and proven to be one of the industries that can help sustain the economy. The Thusanang Community Project has committed itself to fight poverty using agriculture. This is according to project founder Shadrack Achuse who states that the lack of good employment opportunities forced him to think out of the box. This led him to start an agricultural project which would create employment and supply the big markets with fresh produce. “Bophelong is one of the most poverty-stricken areas in this region; this project helps the community by selling them food at a very reasonable price. We also supply schools that have feeding schemes with veggies,” says Achuse. The project has garnered two awards from the Gauteng De-
partment of Agriculture for Processing, Best Community Project and Agri-business Woman of the Year. They also received a cheque for R15 000 when they won the 2012 Community Nutrition Award from Nestle. Anna Makume is one of the younger people working on the project. She says that it has been a very interesting journey for her. “Although the 14 of us are only volunteers at this stage, our aim is to see the project grow to a point where we will be getting salaries just like everybody else.” She adds that the money generated at the moment is used to fill the needs of the project. “I would like to urge the youth in other communities to also get involved in community projects, especially those that have to do with agriculture, as it is a growing industry and will in time create good job opportunities,” concludes Makume.

SEBOKENG. - Bana Ba Godimo Dropping Centre Organization re-launched their organisation on Friday at Modishi Primary School, where they unveiled the new organisation, keeping the community informed of their services. The event commenced with a mini-march around Zone 13 where leaders of the organisation led the way. All members of the organisation and some community leaders took part in the march. The event was then handed to programme director Hloni Menyatso who told those assembled that life is about choices. “We need to make choices as the community to help those who live under the breadline. We need to engage on such organised initiatives when a community embarks on the fight against HIV and Aids, feeding vulnerable and orphaned
children,” said Menyatso as he introduced the distinguished guests who made the event asuccess. According to centre manager Freda Motloenya, the organisation was formed six year ago by the church, which was an initiative to engage with the community by helping the poor and transforming the ideology of social responsibility for the community. “We are living in a world that has been infiltrated by all kinds of stigma and diseases, TB, sugar diabetes, cancer, HIV and many others. These diseases may not cause you direct harm, but they may affect you. Today we are spreading the word of social responsibility and teaching our children to be responsible citizens. Organisations are built out of love and care, not for money. Most of the staff members receive compensations, but through love and care we are pushing to make a difference in our communities,” says Motloenya.

SEBOKENG. - Tshepong Care Centre for orphaned children in Zone 14 celebrated its 10-year anniversary this Saturday. Since its opening in 2003 by Emily Madona, the centre has provided a home for children in need. Two young entrepreneurs, Molemo Betha and Jwalane Kokong from Sebokeng put their heads together to throw the centre a celebration to be remembered. “Initially we approached Tshepong because we wanted to have a ‘fun day’ for the kids. But then we found out that they had just turned 10 and decided that we would throw them an anniversary celebration,” says Kokong.
Centre Manager Mamiki Letshaba says that this was a rare surprise. “The two organisers paid for everything out of their own pockets. “On top of that they even donated toys to the centre. We are really grateful to them for everything they have done for us today.” Leshaba adds that the children were looking forward to the day because this was obviously a huge luxury for them. “We are really grateful that there are still members of the community who will go out of their way to put smiles on these little faces,” Letshaba concludes. The day ended with a suprise visit from the popular ‘Biker Boys’, who entertained all those who attended the event.

VUT focuses on entrepreneurs Lazarus Dithagiso
SEBOKENG. - The Institute of Chemical and Biotechnology (ICBT) is a unit within Technology Transfer and Innovation (TTI), which initially received its mandate from the Faculty of Applied and Computer Science. The ICBT has since stretched to include all other faculties and the community in the region, said Professor Irene Moutlana, Vice Chancellor and Principal of the Vaal University of Technology (VUT). The Sedichem product showcase was hosted at Educity, VUT campus Sebokeng, on October 10. Sedichem is a business and chemical technology incubator that offers entrepreneurs the opportunity for the commercialisation of chemical products and services. A non-profit enterprise incorporated Sedichem under Section 21 of the Companies Act. Sedichem was established to focus on creating small, medium enterprises in the downstream sector of the chemical industry, she said. It includes mentoring, coaching, product development and graduation. The Sedichem Chemical and Business Technology Incuba-
tor was established by the Gauteng provincial government through the Sedibeng District Municipality. Professor Moutlana allowed Professor Sekomeng Modise, without fear, to manage the incubator that draws most incubatees from Sebokeng. Prof Modise also brought the ideas forward for incubation and commercialisation. The VUT was granted the bid to manage the incubator by the Sedichem Board and the Gauteng Department of Economic Development on the basis of the vision and the mission of the VUT. The VUT has taken a broader approach of accommodating projects and SMEs that are strategic and relevant to the national priorities of the government. The possibility of value of the productive essential oils of these plants has yet to be determined. After the speeches, the audience were taken on to to the stalls of Green Eden Nursery, where farming, indigenous plants, skincream lotion, chemicals and soft porridges were the order of the day.

Police frustration addressed Lazarus Dithagiso
VANDERBIJLPARK. - Colonel Esau Mokoena, Detective Commander, applauded the police for putting more effort into their duties. Two police officers, Constable Buti Mamatela and Warrant Officer Carl Bezuidenhout, were awarded as Best Police Officer for August and September respectively. Mokoena has encouraged stakeholders to come on board and uplift the morale of the police. The work done by the police will always be recognised by the community they serve, said Mokoena. On his remarks, Vanderbijlpark Station nCommander Brigadier Themba Denge appealed to the police not to lose hope if their investigated cases are withdrawn by the Magistrates Court. He said he is only too familiar with the frustration this causes, but at the end of the day, justice has to be served to the letter. “I will make an appointment with Retha Venter, senior prosecutor, to discuss and iron out some of the things that frustrate the police. I am glad that most of the cases result in the accused receiving heavy sentences.”

Rebirth makes a return to Gospel tunes Mduduzi Mathebula
SEBOKENG. - Six years ago four young people emerged to create a Gospel group called Rebirth. The group has since attained greater heights and shown growth over the years, featuring on numerous CDs as backing vocals. On Sunday afternoon AFM Breakthrough Tabernacle Church hosted this group to unleash itself on Zone 12. The group has four band
members and eight vocalists. The support was up to scratch but two sessions had to be scheduled for certification of supporters. “It was a great show for our ears. Gospel music was slowly sinking, but with this kind of performance we are back to supporting our local groups,” said one of the spectators during the show. Sean Rabudila says it was not an easy ride to where they are. “We had to put dedica-

Make a Santa shoebox for needy children in your community MEYERTON. - Be Different Brand Builders will be co-ordinating a Santa’s shoebox drive in the Midvaal area once again. “We have identified a very needy school that has more than 135 children currently on their daily feeding scheme,” says Melody Barber, owner of Be Different. With ‘Share the joy of giving’ as the essence of the project, the Santa Shoebox Project offers people from all walks of life the chance to participate in a profoundly valuable and personal experience. Uniquely, donor parents and their children are involved in personally selecting the name of a specific child from the selection list, and this means each participant knows the first name, age, and gender of the child. Gift boxes are filled with some necessities, such as toothpaste and a toothbrush, a face cloth and soap, as well as some sweets, educational supplies, a toy and an outfit of clothing, individually chosen and filled. It is this personal touch that endears the project to adults and children from all communities. Individuals and companies wanting to support children in the community should contact Melody on 084 705 1181 or Desiree Rathbone on 082 821 0774 or bedifferent@mweb.co.za * Spearheaded by Kidz2Kidz founder Dee Boehner in 2006 and coordinated by Irene Pieters since 2007, this non-profit organisation has been collecting ‘Santa Shoeboxes’ at Christmas time for thousands of children from vulnerable social backgrounds since it started in Cape Town in 2006.

How can you spot a skimming device? These devices you see here are used to scan magstrip details directly from your ATM card. Simultaneously, while your magstrip is being read, a camera located in the side of the “Skimmer” is viewing every key you push on the keypad. This means that not only do criminals have your card information, they also have your PIN number, making it simple to transfer your details to any card with a magstrip (Edgars card, expired bank cards, Clicks card, etc) and draw funds from an ATM without your knowledge. Please make your friends and family aware of these devices. With an increase of awareness you may not become a victim. Disguised to seamlessly look like part of an ATM, “skimmers” are devices installed by
thieves to surreptitiously swipe your credit and debit-card information. How can you tell whether an ATM may have a skimmer installed? And what can you do at an ATM to protect your information? If you look at one of these skimmers, they look like part of the machine. Before swiping your debit, cheque or credit card, wiggle the protruding slot in which you slide your card, thieves often install skimmers on top of the ATM’s actual slot and secure the skimmer with adhesive. Check the device and wiggle it to see if it’s loose or if it falls off. Look for remnants or residue of doublesided tape. Anything that looks unusual, check it out. When you type in your PIN on the machine, cover it up so no one can see

it, because some have cameras that arees reading or viewing your PIN as you enter it. Finally, if you’re not sure, just don’t use the machine! A card skimming device can also be attached to an ATM machine. However, despite their detailed design, the devices rely on double-sided adhesive and can come loose. ATM users are advised to check any machine before they use it. If the keypad is raised above the surface of the desk at the ATM, it may be that thieves have installed a keypad over the existing one. Users are also advised to use only newer ATMs with a green plastic tab protruding from machine next to the slot. The tab makes it much more difficult for a skimmer to be installed. - (Security Web Team).

SEDIBENG.- It recently came to light that criminals are becoming more cunning in their plans to gull unsuspecting ATM-users out of their funds. Caregivers awarded love Mduduzi Mathebula
SEBOKENG. - Social work entails social responsibility. This was according to a ground student from the Vaal University Technology (VUT) when a day was held to acknowledge their icons in the field of Social Work on Saturday. The students are studying Public Relations and they were obliged to practice their studies through a real event organised and held by them. Kena Ka Kgotso NGO from Zone 13 was the luckiest organi-
sation appreciated by the students. Grace Thimane and her caregivers were treated to love and care as they are always taking care of others. Thimane has volunteer caregivers who gave time to award the community. According to Thimane, her organisation was formed in 2011 with the intention of serving the community through her positive thinking. An emotional Veronica Mareletse says the event was supposed to be an assignment but

turned emotional and touching and seeing how these caregivers spend their family time to better other people’s lives, Mareletse furthers says, “The event was a huge challenge that tore her apart, including the team that worked hard to see its success. It would be advisable for business people and members of the community to assist
in such initiatives of the NGO or sometimes their presence itself might well be priceless.” Other speakers were from different institutes: Vusimuzi Mdluli from HCT, Seipati Mareletse from a TB ward in Kopanong Hospital, Peter Masombuka an Alumni. The event was also graced by Abahlabeleli Gospel Choir.

MEC Vadi says this is the beginning of great opportunities for the people of the Midvaal area, as the department has invested heavily in road infrastructure over the past couple of years. This project will provide 200 jobs to local residents, offer subcontracting opportunities to local small businesses and will
impart skills to the locals. Addressing the audience, Premier Mokonyane said that this project will contribute to wealth creation for the economy and contribute to social cohesion. Midvaal MMC Councillor Malcolm Hack said that Midvaal is excited about the constant improvements that are being made within the area. “The link between infrastructure and economic development is clearly evident – we cannot have one without the other. “In an area like Midvaal where we are driving the agenda of economic growth, it is fantastic to be able to implement infrastructural improvements which are going to bring in businesses and employment,” he said.

Local dancer knows she can dance Moleboheng Chaha
VANDERBIJLPARK. - Golda Rabe made it into the top 16 of the ever-so-popular dance show So you think you can dance aired on SABC1 recently. Rabe’s first taste of the dance industry came when she first entered the South African Dance Teachers Association’s Hip Hop competition, where she competed with some of the country’s best dancers. In her very first attempt she made it all the way to the finals. Thereafter Rabe made the final round every year she entered. One very notable achievement was when she represented SA at the World Hip Hop Championships in Germany in 2006. According to her former dance instructor Tamlyn McCabe, it was apparent even from the age of six that Rabe had a tremendous talent and a love for dancing when she started dancing with Pizazz Dance and Pilates Studio. McCabe describes Rabe as “a beautiful and graceful dancer who gives you a glimpse of her inner beauty every time you see her dance”. Since leaving the Vaal Rabe joined various dance crews, dancing live with a number of musicians and appearing in music videos.
For the love of it Golda Rabe made it into the top 16 of the popular show “So you think you can dan ce” this season.
North West University students through their internship at the Department of Social Development have initiated a programme called the ‘Tswelopele’ Early Child Deve lopment Programme which is aimed at identifying the challenges that ECD practitio ners face. The students have also come up with ways to help register daycare centres that have not been registered with the Department of Social Services. Safa Sedibeng teams battle it out in Nedbank Cup Zacharia Nale
SEDIBENG. - It is that time of the year when amateur soccer teams are given the opportunity to play against the PSL clubs in the Nedbank Cup. Safa Sedibeng SAB League teams battled it out in the elimination of the Nedbank Cup at various venues over the weekend. These games were played at the Isak Steyl Stadium and Shakespeare Stadium on Saturday. The four teams that will battle against each other to win the right to represent Sedibeng in the competition are The Birds FC, Sedibeng United Scientist FC, Manyora and Mighty Blues. The competition is well known for lower divisions teams, giving their PSL counterparts a run for their money. The most notable upset was when Baroka FC from Vodacom League sent Kaizer Chiefs packing in the tournament two seasons ago. Maluti College also produced a
killer performance when they beat the mighty Orlando Pirates 4 - 1. However, in this region, no team has gone to the last 32 since the inception of the competition. The only local team that went as far as the last 16 was the now-defunct Boipatong Rangers when the competition was known as BobSave. Sasolburg Juventus FC also made history when they reached the last 16 of the tournament playing against Bidvest Wits. This is the same competition that saw the likes of Bennet Chenene in the books of Amazulu before he went to Orlando Pirates. Today Chenene is a household name in South African football. Other players who were discovered through Nedbank include Orlando Pirates “hard man” Andile Jali who now dominates the PSL. The regional semi-finals take place this coming weekend.

School receives donation Zacharia Nale
ORANGE FARMS.- Government Communication and Information System’s (GCIS) Management Committee came together to donate soccer goal posts, soccer balls and funds to Solwazi Primary School recently. The school was opened last year and now with only ten classrooms, it accommodates 600 learners. The donation has came at the right time when the school needed this equipment desperately to encourage learners to participate in sports. GCISrepresentative Harold Maloka says as the organisation, they felt that there was a need to make a contribution
towards human development as they want to build a country that is prosperous and that prosperity and development starts with children. “We felt when we were approached that we should make our contribution as GCIS management to make a difference in somebody’s life who is less fortunate. The GCIS Managment Committee has called all stakeholders of the community to do their part in the betterment of the less fortunate schools. He adds: “As GCIS we are part and parcel of a development journey of building a better country in line with national development.”

reguLar oLive oiL vs extra - virgin oLive oiL: what’s the difference, and which shouLd i use? There are actually four kinds of olive oils. Extra-virgin olive oil is typically produced from the first pressing of olives -- making it the most pure and least acidic (less than 0.8 percent), and the best tasting. Because it’s expensive, heavier, and more flavorful than other types of olive oil, it’s best used as an accent to dishes (drizzled over bruschetta or for this Minty Quinoa Tabouleh), or in dressings and vinaigrettes, like this Tomato-basil Vinaigrette. Hint: Look for bottles that say “cold press” on the label. If it’s not cold-pressed, the heat from the extraction process changes the chemistry and quality of the olive oil. Virgin olive oil isn’t blended with other oils but has a higher acidity -- up to 2 percent. It’s perfect for garnishing this Crema di Pomodoro (that’s fancy Italian for “tomato soup” -- and it’s awesome hot or cold). Pure olive oil or olive oil is a blend of refined pomace oil and virgin olive oil. Pomace is produced by processing the leftovers of the virgin olive oil extraction. The blend (which usually contains as little as 5 to 10 percent virgin olive oil) is cheaper to produce. It doesn’t have as strong a flavor as virgin olive oils and is best suited for frying and cooking, or even as a less expensive substitute, like in this Orange/Olive Oil Cake. Light olive oil isn’t lower in fat -- it simply means the oil is made from refined olive oil. Bottles labeled “100 percent pure olive oil” are often the lowest quality.

Food Nerd Fact: Just like wine, several European countries have “name place” designations for olive oils, indicating not only the region where the olives were grown and where the oil was produced, but also denoting a higher level of standards and quality. If you see “DOP” (Denominazione d’Origine Protetta) on olive oil from Italy or the European Union, “AOC” (Appellation d’Origine Controlee) on French olive oil, or “DO” (Denominacion de Origen) on olive oil from Spain, it’s generally considered to be a better olive oil.
Pairing wine with cheese
Pairing wine with cheese isn’t always as straightforward as it might seem. Successful combinations like Port with Stilton make it appear foolproof, but I have found some basic rules are worth sticking to. Heavily oaked white wines tend to clash with most cheeses, as do reds with noticeable tannins (those bitter-tasting, mouth-drying flavours). Fruit-driven wines tend to fare better overall. Let’s consider wines to partner 4 basic styles of cheese: Creamy cheeses like Brie or Camembert have a mouth-coating effect that’s a lot for wine to cope with. As they mature, such cheeses get stronger and more pungent. A full, dry, white wine like a Chardonnay or white Rioja is lovely with young cheese, but go for a powerful, fruity red if the cheese is mature: a smoky Rioja Reserva, a big-scaled, peppery Shiraz, or a South African Pinotage perhaps. Strongly flavoured blue cheeses like Stilton need a wine with some sweetness. Port is such a good match because it is the perfect counter-point to the saltiness and strength of the cheese. Look for wood-aged, 10 or 20 year old tawny Ports - far removed from basic tawny that is nothing more than a blend of cheap ruby and white wines. Also worth considering are Liqueur Muscats from Australia. With their caramelised, orangey flavours these are headily perfumed, luscious and intensely sweet. Goat’s cheese and Sauvignon Blanc is a match made in Heaven. The grassy quality of classic Sancerre or Pouilly-Fumé complements the cheese perfectly. New World Sauvignons will also work, as long as they are not too tropically fruity and have good acidity. For hard cheeses, like Cheddar or Parmesan, a red would be my choice. The better the cheese, the better the wine. Fine, mature Claret wouldn’t be wasted on top-notch Cheddar. Alternatively, try a Châteauneuf-du-Pape or a rich, Californian Merlot. These cheeses can take a certain amount of tannin, but not too much.

SHOOTING FROM THE HIP With Zacharia Nale Shooting From The Hip is under the impression that Safa Sedibeng officials are either deaf, blind or stupid, to say the least. It seems they don’t learn from their mistakes and gain experience! So what do you do if a person makes the same mistake over and over again? Do you give up on him or try to show him the direction to take to reach his destination? To be direct, Shooting From The Hip is aware that the u/13s and u/15s were selected

TThey hey aare re eeither ither ddeaf, eaf, bblind lind oorr sstupid! tupid! during the week but not all the teams were informed about this. According to the selectors they were told not to select certain teams because they are not part of the Safa league. Which Safa league are they referring to? The one that plays at the Vaal Killers soccer grounds? I don’t think any youngster can be proud of playing Safa league, but playing under those conditions? Never! Shooting From The Hip just wonders which coach is going to be brave enough to take that team to the competition, of which half are only used to playing on dusty soccer fields. Some of them will be playing on turf for the first time. Safa Sedibeng divides coaches in this region and Shooting From The Hip has the feeling some Safa Sedibeng officials use coaches to fight
their battles. For example, it was the same with the Future Champions Tournament and history is about to repeat itself. If indeed there is a Safa Sedibeng executive committee’s instruction to select only those players whose team members play in the league – do they know the reason why the league doesn’t play in other areas? Did Safa Sedibeng go and ask those teams or coordinators why the league doesn’t play in their areas? It has become clear that football is only about elections and positions in this region. Safa Sedibeng and its affiliates are careless about the development of football. If Shooting From The Hip may ask: for how long is this region doomed to continue as a laughing stock among
other Safa regions? This is one region that doesn’t learn from previous mistakes or from experience. It is either that Safa Sedibeng officials don’t learn or that they are deaf. Shooting From The Hip’s message to those development coaches is – coaches, refuse to be used because your reputation is at stake here. Gentlemen, it is your choice to go on with that team and embarrass this region as usual! This is the only region where the junior leagues play on hard-surface soccer fields. To make it worse, when these boys go and compete against other regions, you can see that they are not used to turf. Football is not only about elections or positions. It has always been far more than that.
Sebokeng Ajax on the way up to SAB League

SEBOKENG.- It was hugs and kisses among Sebokeng Ajax FC players, officials and supporters, when the team gained promotion to campaign in the Safa Sedibeng SAB League in the new season. This was after this Sebokeng-based side finished at the top of the log during the Promotional Play-Offs that recently took place at the Ennerdale Stadium. Ajax finished at the top of the log with nine points after winning all three of their games. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sports, a jubilant Master Zondo says it is mission accomplished for his team. He says it was always his dream to play in the SAB League after he failed to gain promotion last season. “What can I say? I’m excited because these boys fought very hard to gain this promotion. They were unbelievable and I did not expect them to win all the games. This victo-
ry means a lot to me and the community of Zone 12,” says the excited Zondo. Zondo also took the opportunity to thank all the people who rallied behind his team, especially Stream A where his team campaigned before promotion. To date, Sebokeng Ajax FC made history when they decided to join Stream A instead of Stream B, which involves Sebokeng teams. He told Sedibeng Ster Sports that his decision to campaign in Stream A paid off because his teams clinched promotion. He says Stream A is the most competitive stream and he encourages other teams from Sebokeng to come and compete in this stream. He adds: “I advise Sebokeng teams to go and play in Stream A because those teams really gave us tough competition. If we did not come and compete in Stream A, I don’t think we could have gained promotion to SAB League. The interesting thing about Stream A is that they play with young play-
ers who can compete the whole 90 minutes. I benefited a great deal from Stream A.” Meanwhile, Central United FC from Leside will join Sebokeng Ajax FC to the SAB
League after finishing second on the log after the Promotional Play-offs. To make things interesting, this is the second team from Leside to campaign in the SAB League.

SEDIBENG. - The MSC Sedibeng Soccer Tournament will resume after the school exams. This was revealed by the tournament organisers after the quarter-finals played at the Shakespeare and George Thabe Stadium over the weekend. This youth soccer tournament has attracted many local soccer fans and coaches/scouts since it started two weeks ago. According to Tebello Kheswa who is the tournament coordinator, the tournament will pause and resume immediately after school exams. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sports,
Kheswa says players’ education is very important, and they want to give them enough time to study. The u/17 quatrer-final took place at the George Thabe Stadium with Sebokeng, Celta Vigo Dev Centre FC, Sebokeng Academy, Rust-ter-Vaal Saints and Vaal Milano booked their place in the semi-final on Saturday. In the u/13 category Mighty Stars, Benfica, Happy Stars and EYA FC are through to the semis of the tournament. Celta Vigo, Mighty Stars, Eagles Golden Arrows and Nale Academy also booked their place in the semi-finals of the u/15s. These mouth-watering games took place at the Shakespeare Stadium on Sunday. As usual parents/guardians and local soc-
cer fans came in numbers to see these future stars showcase their talent and skills. “We decided to take a break so that these players have a chance to concentrate on their exams without worrying about their next games. “We as Vaal Milano and the sponsors of MCS want to wish all the players the best of luck in their exams, especially those who do matric,” says Kheswa. Meanwhile, Kheswa says the teams will be informed of the dates and venues where the games will take place after the players have finished writing their exams.
SHARPEVILLE. - It will be survival of the fittest when Dimakatso Health and Fitness Club hosts the Aerobics Marathon at Sharpeville’s George Thabe Stadium on November 9. This much anticipated marathon starts at 8:00 with registration open from 7:00. This exciting news was broken to Sedibeng Ster Sports by Health and Fitness Club instructor Dimakatso Sejane, who challenges young and old persons to come and take part in this marathon. Sejane says this ‘survival of the fittest’ marathon will test the character of participants, especially fitness and health. She says the theme of the day is “Let’s Promote a Healthy Lifestyle and Eliminate Chronic Illnesses”. The energetic Sejane says this event is not only for young people, but for all Sedibeng residents. To date, it has been a while since Sedibeng has organised an event of this nature where young and old come together to battle on behalf of their lifestyles. “Look, the event is not about winning or who comes first or last, but to promote a healthy lifestyle. There is a serious need for all the people to take care of their health because, if you keep fit, it is not easy to get sick. So everyone is invited to come and take part,” she says.
