SEBOKENG. – It sounded like a scene from a horror movie to residents of Sebokeng Zone 17 and its neighbouring community when a 16-year-old girl - Ouma Makgomo Mosesi - went missing after being stalked by an unknown person. She was later found strangled to death with a heavy chain. Her corpse was naked and had been dumped in the street. Mosesi’s nightmare started when their penultimate daughter and older sister Sarah Mosesi were stalked and received death threats on their phones until the little sister’s disappearance. She went missing on the October 19. This is according to the family and twas reported in the last edition of Sedibeng Ster (7-13 November). According to the family, a few days after Makgomo’s disappearace Sarah received an SMS that read: “ I told you that I’m going to kill your little sister” While family, friends and schoolmates were on the lookout, reporting and searching for Makgomo at any possible place they could think of, the 16-year-old was long gone to this world of the living as the stalker had promised in the SMSs. Evaton Police reported finding a young unknown woman at the corner of Adams Road and Cradock Road. She had been strangled to death with a heavy chain and might have been raped before her death. The corpse of the young woman was identified by the mortuary officer on seeing the newspaper articles all over Sedibeng. He alerted the police. Sebokeng Police spokesperson Inspector Mzimkhulu Mthimkhulu says the case of the ‘missing’ girl has been closed by the Sebokeng Police. and that Evaton Police will now be investigating a case of murder. Evaton Police spokesperson Constable Tshifiwa Mitileni confirms that the murder case will be linked to the missing case. “Investigations are ongoing and will we will break down any door to get to the bottom of this matter,” says Mitileni. The heartbroken mother could not restrain her anguish at losing her daughter in such a manner. “I still don’t believe that she is gone. I hope the culprit(s) are found so they can tell me what ever my child did to them to die so horribly,” says Ntshebo Mosesi.

Hlongwane said, “ Sincere condolences are offered to family and friends, and we thank them for the privilege of sharing in the illustrious life of this teacher, politician and selfless community worker. Thabane was appointed the Executive Mayor of Emfuleni in 2001, whereby he oversaw the exceptionally challenging project of transforming and changing the financial position in Emfuleni. In her statement Hlongwane said the late Thabane performed his task with exciting skills. He was one of the only mayors who publicly recommended

maintenance of what the region has and new capital project. Hlongwane mentioned that before Thabane become the mayor, he was appointed Chairperson of the Organising Task Team of the ANC in the region after the disbandment of the regional leadership. He was a member of the Gauteng Interim Leadership Core (GILC) under leadership of David Makhura. Dlomo Dam claims another life SHARPEVILLE. - Although big in size, low level dams can be a great danger for river users. A recent drowning at the Dlomo Dam highlighted why the general public must put safety at the forefront of their minds. This comes after a man aged about 40 to 45 was found dead on Monday afternoon. The shocking discovery was made by a well known fisherman who immediately alerted the police. On arrival Police found the deceased floating in the Dam on his back. It is suspected that the man might have been a traditional healer because of the tattoo on his shoulder - the symbol of a diamond- and he had dreadlocks; traditional beads bound both his arms. He was wearing blue jeans and a T-shirt with yellow sneakers. Local traditional healers were called to the scene to try and identify the deceased without any luck as none knew him.

Some community members also tried to identify him with no luck. As the man had a lot of visible injuries on his body because of the time he’d spent in the water only a post mortem will determine what the cause of his death was, though it is suspected that he might have been killed somewhere else and thrown into the dam. According to Sharpeville Police spokesperson Rapule Pitso, this is the third incident in one year in which all three victims were in the same age group. He says, “We would like to appeal to all community members to come forward and identify the man or if they have lost a family member or relative who might be a traditional healer.” The body was taken to the Sebokeng Hospital Mortuary. The body of a suspected traditional hea ler was found floating in the Dlomo Dam on Monday afternoon in Sharpeville.

HIV Positive man sentenced for infecting five Mduduzi Mathebula

BOIPATONG.- A 42-year-old man who is HIV positive was recently sentenced to eight years in prison by the Vanderbijlpark Magistrates Court. The sentencing of the accused was the result of accusations from five different women who claimed to have been Aids-infected by the accused. These five women had no idea that the ‘love of their lives’ had been living with HIV/Aids for eight years. According to Police a full report from the Health Department indicates that the accused had been taking ARVs since 2005. “Through

intensive investigation Police managed to get a full report from the Department of Health since the complainants were keen to know the outcome of the case. At this present moment Police cannot divulge the status of the five women in terms of their privacy and their rights,” says Police spokesperson Thembeka Koago. Sedibeng Ster ventured to speak to the five infected women, but it proved impossible to persuade them to relay their story to the public. However, Emfuleni Local Municipal Health MMC Sello Pitso was at liberty to attest to the matter. “It is an unfortunate situati-

on for those infected by the accused. We strongly condemn what has happened. A person who is HIV positive should take responsibility and have acceptance counselling,” says Pitso. He adds that, as the Health Department, they will get to the bottom of this matter and ensure that all the affected and infected persons receive counselling. Right: Emfuleni MMC for Health Sello Pitso declares that HIV is treatable as he sympa thises with those who were infected by the 42yearold suspect that was jailed recent ly. so substance abusers and they also abuse their husbands and children. All in all abuse is a serious offence. We should be careful not to give birth to a bitter nation through what we say,” says Mooi. Duduzile Matontsi from NYDA (National Youth Development Agency) says the abuse of substances and alcohol has never made any person high - it degrades him/her. “When you are intoxicated you feel high when you are actually low, since your mind is unbalanced.” Mxolisi Sebobo from SAMAG (South African Men’s Action Group) deals with issues affecting men and repositioning them as head of the home. He added that if men could take their position and be protectors and pillars of strength to their families, South Africa and the world won’t be the same. After numerous dignitaries had briefly taken the podium there was a mini march against drug abuse.

EVATON. - Usindiso (the Save) Non-Governmental Organisation believes in creating producers - not consumers. It held a drug awareness campaign and different stakeholders such as NYDA, CANSA and Love Life attended it on Friday. The event was held in the New Hall at Evaton West. Those in attendance agreed that drugs kill and cripple the lives of young people, ultimately destroying them. Ward councillor Nomsa Mooi was very precise in her talk to women about abuse and drug abuse. “We cannot blame alcohol and our addictions if we agreed to start using it in the first place. The abuse of women and children is a serious matter that we should start taking responsibility for, and we should stop blaming it on the past and on our upbringing,” says Mooi. She further lambasted women for abusing their own children. She urged them to start teaching their children about life. “Women are al-

“We want the money” Carla du Plessis

VEREENIGING. - “We work hard here at Midvaal.” This was the unanimous message from numerous employees of Midvaal Private Hospital who went on strike last Friday. They has had it up to the gills and exchanged their Midvaal uniforms for their green and yellow union T-shirts. The gates in font of Midvaal Hospital were closed and those who wanted to visit the hospital needed to use an alternative entrance. The Midvaal uniforms they usually wore were noticed hanging over the palisades, together with the banners and posters. Some of the posters read: “Away with your labour brokers, away, away,” “Away with your abnormal working hours” and “Stop encouraging racism”. These unhappy Midvaal Hospital employees told Sedibeng Ster that they didn’t get the salaries they deserved or salaries commensurate with the constitution. Most of their salaries are between R1 800 en R3 500 and they want to know what Meisie Nhlapo, the shop steward holds up the strike posters.

they must do with this. “We don’t even get any medical benefits and if we are sick we are taken to Kopanong Hospital, but all other staff members receive medical benefits,” Meisie Nhlapo, the shop steward, said. “We do everything, but we don’t get the money,” another one told Sedibeng Ster. According to them some employees who used to get paid R19 an hour. Now they suddenly receive decreased salaries of R13 an hour and now there are deductions, such as pension fund, which never appeared on their payslips. Most of these employees are members of the Hotel, Liquor, Catering and Allied Workers Union (HOTELICCA) as well as the National Council of Trade Unions (NACTU). The representatives of the unions had a meeting with the management of Midvaal Hospital on Monday while unhappy employees continued with their strike. Sedibeng Ster asked Mr Gordon Caine for comment, but has not yet received a response. Right: Unhappy employees from Midvaal Hospital went on strike last Friday because they feel that they don't get paid enough for all the work they do in the hospital. Pho tos: Carla du Plessis.

9R_Na\ @R_R_\ The past week opened my eyes to the reality that is faced by the youth in this country; this was largely due to the registration messages that were hammered into our heads. I made sure that I engaged the youth so as to get to know their views about the upcoming national elections. The evidence of the neglect of our youth was all around. The youth tell me that they are not going to waste their time and register to vote or even go to the polls next year. They tell me about the hardships that they

These young people tell me about the work experience that is needed when they apply for jobs. ‘Where are we going to get this when we come straight from College or university?’ they ask. Finally they tell me about the exploitation they face when they are given temporary jobs with low wages or are employed on a contract basis without any guarantee of a permanent post and when they raise their voices they are demoted, retrenched or straight out fired from

In survey after survey, the problems facing young people have been identified as unemployment, education, their health and a lack of a voice in issues affecting them. The thousands of our youth standing by the roadsides in urban areas giving pamphlets out, selling garments, flowers and other things will not make us the nation we need to be. BOPHELONG. - Although the election date has not been set, some political parties are already registering with their voices by closing roads with stones that bear rival protest messages. Some residents of Muvhango extensions, the greater Bophelong area, were recently left thirsty for two days as their taps ran dry. Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) members apparently persuaded the community to join them to take to the streets as they could not resist the thirst. Sedibeng Ster was informed by residents that they had spotted a Colt double-cab bakkie of an EEF member. They alleged that the driver of the bakkie Mabuza Motsoenyane - was seen transporting members to barricade roads. Others ran amok with Lady Luck-driven impunity, trying to attack foreigners’ tuck shops. Shop owners got the message quickly and closed down. Motsoenyane confirmed that the EFF led the protests because ELM Municipality had driven them wild by closing the taps. “How can we be required to check for our names on voter registration lists when we are denied water?” he asked. “The municipality takes us for granted,” muttered an unhappy member of the EFF. The Bophelong Golden Highway intersection robots were closed with rocks that were moved into the road by residents. Motorists were forced to make speedy U-turns as the police were battled to bring the situation under control. The following morning tap-functions were restored though water was pouring out at a low pressure. Registration stations operated smoothly without intimidation in Bophelong. Emfuleni Local Municipality Communications officer Klaas Mofomme said: “Any problem related to a shut-down of water would immediately have been broadcast by ELM to the community through radio.”

Name gives ‘New Hope’ Lazarus Dithagiso

MEYERTON. - It’s official. The Gauteng Department of Education has approved a name proposed by some of the parents as ‘New Hope Secondary School.’ This came after the principal, Thabo Letsatsi, refused to have the school renamed after him. The school, established on January 7 with a roll of 647 learners from Grade 8 to 9, only temporarily used the name ‘Sicelo Secondary.’ This was before the official announcement when the school was visited by the Diwali Feeding Scheme on November 9. The Department of Education welcomes the proposed name, said Letsatsi. Letsatsi said the school intends to upgrade the standard every year until Grade 12 in 2016. Diwali Feeding Scheme is the partner

that’s going to put in a temporary laboratory with full equipment,’ he said. “Thanks to Nature’s choice for adding value by building the car shelters, security gate, also for sponsoring learners with food parcels,’ said Letsatsi. Most of the learners stay with guardians as they don’t have parents and others are orphans. Letsatsi said this does not stop them from learning and enjoying school. Minesh Narayan, secretary of the Diwali Feeding Scheme, said New Hope is the fifth school they have helped with food hampers, depending on their needs. “I am proud of the learners who proved beyond reasonable doubt that they have potential when they presented speeches that went from their hearts to the audience,” said Nartayan.

BOIPATONG. - To rally kids belonging to local creches in accordance with the best practices of culture, Nonhlanhla Thabethe recently held the first Mr and Miss Boipatong Arts and Culture beauty contest at Boipatong Community Hall. The competition created for kids aged from four to eight aimed to instil cultural values from a young age. Thabethe says, “The main reason for the initiative was to integrate cultural aspects into beauty pageants so as to lay a solid foundation for future entrants of competitions like this.” Amongst the project

drivers were local Sports & Recreation MMC Shaka Radebe and Nompi Nhlapo from the office of the Legislature. Four creches from Boipatong took part in the competition, namely Boipatong Edu Creche, Ouma Creche, Future Creche and Boipatong Tshirela Creche. All the kids wore their different traditional clothes on the day. “We plan to run a cultual event that will be sustainable yearly in Heritage Month. Thank you to all the local shops that made the event possible.” Thabethe concludes.

SEBOKENG. - Sedibeng College Cultural Group lived up to expectation as a musical group bent on bringing nothing but the best entertainment in the college. Sedibeng Ster caught up with the group last Thursday during rehearsals at the college. Since these young men and women are tertiary students much is expected from their parents toward their education, while the college shares the same sentiments. However, these young musicians have one thing in common, which is the love of music and education. The group was started years ago by former students who had represented Sedibeng College Sebokeng.

Today the legacy is continued by students who are stepping right into the footsteps of their predecessors. “We sing cultural music which is not common to any other young person these days. The main objective of the group is to keep cultural music alive,” says Sam Motaung, one of the group leaders. “Cultural music is not popular among our peers, but we are trying every means to keep it alive as part of our heritage and tradition,” adds group conductor Teboho Makume. When asked how music and study were juggled, or whether one tends to be the main objective, Makume responded that their immersion into cultural music did not mean they had forgortten why they were there - to study.

Artistic day graced by community Mduduzi Mathebula

SEBOKENG. – Phamehlo Primary School celebrated a cultural fun day on Friday where parents and learners enjoyed good performances. Parents graced the fun day celebration with love and dignity. Learners had much to offer to all the audiences and much was expected from them. There were all kinds of performances - spiritual dances, cultural dance which includes Sotho, Zulu and other nationalities. A beauty pageant was performed by the senior phase. Music was part of the day

and a key element of celebration was - time and again - when the programme director pulled out audience members to participate in a dance. Nomasonto Ndosi, a parent, says she was very pleased by the event and the children’s performance. “All of these children outdid themselves, all thanks to the teachers and the greatest glory to the Almighty; now we know that our children have hidden talent. “Charity begins at home and talent is identified in schools,” says Lindiwe Radebe who is an educator at the school.

The main of objective about DA Latha Projects in coming up with such a great initiative is to motivate middle-class people, professionals - indeed, people of all levels. Latha feels that since Sedibeng Municipality has been declared a Metro, it will need smart people to create a smart city. “I believe in greatness. We all have potential and the best is in us. We need to unleash our fears and become. We need `smart’ - that is why God made us different and unique. I believe `smart’ doesn’t repel, it attracts.” These are the words uttered by Latha du-

ring his motivational speech at Sedibeng College on Tuesday. Latha says he believes in personal development. He is inspired by JC Maxwell the founder of the ‘I can’ Foundation and David Molapo, who is his spiritual leader. Latha was born in Sebokeng but he got his call to motivate and uplift people though his uncle who was his `life' coach for years. When asked why the live DVD of his debut, Latha says, “There’s no limit in greatness and God-given gifts. We are only limited by our failures, which is not an option.’ The live DVD will feature the likes of the Soils, Xoli Nosenga, Lwandle, and Yolanda Sihle, Nhlanhla Maduna the Storyteller, unleashing all Vaal’s finest. As it is now, Latha has joined forces with Thetha FM and different stakeholders to make the city smart for smart people. Left: Dumisani Latha sees the light in the Vaal and he believes that a smart city is created by smart peo ple.

Save, Save, Save Out of the unknown

Most employers pay salaries earlier than normal in December. This is very convenient for most employees but can lead to that familar and tragic back-lash of financial difficulties if early pay is not properly controlled. The first concern is with regards to debit orders. It may happen that by the time the normal monthly debit orders go into the account, that there are insufficient funds as a result of the salary that came in early so that the funds are used up. Such instances are also accompanied by charges from the bank. One successful debit order can charge a client up to R110-00, depending on the bank and type of ac-

count. After the charges, you then face a possible double deduction (which most companies prefer) in January e.g. your single premium debit order of R750.00 will be R1500 in January. This is one of the cases that make January difficult considering all those expenses associated with the beginning of the year, e.g. school uniforms, school fees, transport, etc. So it is advisable for the consumer to arrange with the debit order company to deduct early as well (if you know your paydate in December), or once you get paid start first by paying your instalments in cash. Be in control, it’s your money.

daughter away into a life of marriage where the young couple were wedded by Father Liam. After Father Leam had a word or two with the couple, vows and rings exchanged and Father Leam blessed the marriage. The couple were, for the first time, presented to friends and family as Mr and Mrs Letsabo. With jubilation in the air, we left for the reception where the union was celebrated with friends, strangers and neighbours who eagerly waited to see Mr and Mrs Letsabo for the very first time. As the day drew to a close, the newlyweds were congratulated and encouraged as they entered into a new chapter of their lives as husband and wife. Congratulations to Mr and Mrs Letsabo.

SEDIBENG.-The celebration of a young couple who have stepped out of the known and dived head-first into the unknown as they begin a life together as husband and wife is no small thing. November 9 of 2013 saw the beginning of a long, wonderful and prosperous journey for young Botle Mahele and Thabo Letsabo. On the morning of the wedding the bride was escorted out of her home by her father, heading for St Francis Fiesta Church in Vanderbijlpark, where Botle was awaited by her soon to be husband Thabo Letsabo. Emotions were raw as Mr Mahele gave his

I’m Sibonglie from Sebokeng Zone 12. I was fifinancially nancially struggling and my in-laws separated me from my husband. Our kids were sick & nothing was working out for us. I tried a lot of healers, pastors, etc with no answer. Until I heard about PROF PAHAD on the local radio. I visited him, he covered me with a white cloth, touched my head while making prayers. He gave me a magic stick that did wonders for me. I’m bounded with my husband & got a senior job promotion. We’re a happy family now. He showed me my enemies in magic water.

SHARPEVILLE. - It was heart warming when the junior soccer team captains were given a platform from which to speak during the MCS Soccer Tournament Launch at Noma’s Kitchen in Vuka on Sunday. The organisers took these young ‘captains fantastic’ by surprise when they asked them to come forward to speak on behalf of their teams. The launch was part of the semi-finalist draw for the u/13, u/15 and u/17 teams. These young captains passed this test with flying colours, despite the fact that they were not informed they would be asked to make a speech at the launch. Guests and sponsors’ representatives could not believe it when these youngsters boldly took centre stage and made many sit back and listen to their interesting speeches. The tournament brought some innovation to local football with teams from all over the Sedibeng region participating in this annual tournament. A Sebokeng Academy u/17 captain urged his opponents to up the standard of the tournament in the field of play, much to the de-

SEDIBENG.- Constable Maria Motaung is not only a woman in blue arresting criminals but she recently proved that she is a force to be reckoned with on the netball field. Police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Kinnie Steyn says that this tiny woman is not only making her mark on the netball field but she is making the Vanderbijlpark SAPS Station proud in the way she conducts herself at work and in sport. Motaung was selected to represent the Gauteng SAPS netball team in October at the trials for the National SAPS netball team for the series commenced on October 7. The Gauteng team won all their games and they won the championship with Eastern Cape in second place and the SAPS Head Office in third place. Motaung was elected as the best shooter during the championships. “This was not the only accomplishment as Constable Motaung and twenty other players were selected for the National SAPS netball team. Five of the twenty players are from Gauteng. This is indeed a great honour and reward for all the dedication, passion and practice that she puts into her sport. It is clear that we can expect to see a lot more of this dynamic lady in the future,” Vanderbijlpark Police Station Commander Brigadier Themba Denge (left) Steyn says. light of guests. Sello Tshabalala, tournament chairman, says they brought a lot of innovation to this year’s tournament. “We have decided to introduce new things to motivate these youngsters on and off the field. We wanted to surprise them by inviting them to the launch and asking them to speak. Our intention is also to start to develop their potential because you could hear some of them have the potential to become Bafana Bafana captains,” he concludes. Ajax make SAB League debut Zacharia Nale

SEBOKENG. - Sebokeng Ajax FC left the Safa Sedibeng SAB League with disappointing results when they lost 1-0 to Try Me Again FC at the Shakespeare Stadium on Sunday. Despite the results the Ajax Coach Master Zondo says he is not disappointed with his team’s performance. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sports, Zondo says he could not fault his players as they did everything by the book but were unfortunate to earn a penalty. Zondo says they could have won the game if they had converted their chances into goals after creating so many scoring opportunities for the better part of the game. They did not look like a team just promoted to the SAB League this season. However, if their weekend performance is anything to go by, there is no doubt that Ajax will be the team to watch this season. They played like they have been in the SAB League before and it was also encouraging to see them playing the same kind of football they play while they were still campaigning in the Promotion League. To date, Sebokeng has been promoted to the Safa SAB

League after doing well at the Promotion Play-Offs. They were campaigning at Stream A. Zondo says he will not put his players under any pressure as they try to adapt to the SAB League. He believes after five games his boys will be used to the demanding schedule of the SAB League. “I think if we can continue to play the way we did against Try Me Again, I have no doubt that we will finish at a related position on the log at the end of the season. This was an encouraging performance, taking into consideration that it was our first game in the league. My boys adapted very quickly and one could not tell which was the new team in the league. Make no mistake, Try Me Again is the best team in the league but we gave a good fight. After the game they should be complimented for giving Try Me Again a run for their money,” says Zondo. Sebokeng Ajax will be away to RESA at the Dick Fourie Stadium on Saturday. The game kick-off is at 15:00. Zondo was confident that he will come back home with maximum points come Saturday. In another SAB League match played at the George Thabe Stadium on Saturday, Vaal Milano and Ghetto played to a goalless draw in the Sharpeville derby. Moving the bus in the right direction

SHOOTING FROM THE HIP With Zacharia Nale

Enough of Vaal Killer soccer grounds! Shooting From The Hip wishes to take this opportunity to complete my congratulations to the development coaches, especially to the Emfuleni Local Football Association’s Stream A for their commitment. For the past two months the development coaches in this stream have been working tirelessly to keep youngsters busy and focused. Shooting From The Hip never saw this be-

fore, where development coaches meet almost every day just to talk about the future of football not only in this stream but in Sedibeng as whole. It is encouraging also to see the coaches who at one stage quit football because of dirty politics in this region, making a comeback to football and making a huge difference. Shooting From Hip wants to compliment those coaches for their effort. This is the right direction and maybe also an opportunity to start development centres in this region to improve the standard of football. Shooting From The Hip encourages coaches from other areas to start coming together for the sake of the youngsters. It is high time development coaches wor-

ked in unison. When Shooting From The Hip debates or highlights the challenges that football faces in this region, some of the development coaches think of Yours Truly as a gratuitously controversial ‘Self Appointed Minister of Football’. Football needs someone with ‘balls’ (pun intended) who is brave enough to lead the development coaches in this region. The sooner they realise this the better, because we need to get rid of the ‘I’ mentality in local football. In case you are not aware, this region has the potential to produce powerhouses in South African football as was once the case. Shooting From The Hip doesn’t need to mention those who hoisted

the Sedibeng flag high in the past, but what is important is to move local football forward. We can learn from other countries, specifically Spain, which dominates the world with its famous ‘tiki-taka’. The foundation that Spain has laid over the past eight years is starting to bear fruit. This is the approach that South African football should take – to come up with a tenyear plan to move football forward. To those development coaches in Stream A: gentlemen, continue with those meetings and one day somebody will realise how important it is to discuss the future of football in this region. Shooting From The Hip would like to see other coaches join those gatherings. Let’s move this bus in the right direction.

Zamkele scoops award Zacharia Nale

VANDERBIJLPARK. - Xolisani Zamkele, a gold medalist at the World Student Games, once again won the Vaal University’s Sportsman of The Year Award. The presentation was recently made in the campus main hall. This annual Sports Dinner Awards was to acknowledge and appreciate the institution’s students for their achievements in different sporting codes. Zamkele towered head-andshoulders above the rest when he clinched this prestigious award. He has been a consistent performer for the VUT Athletics Club. His background in brief is that he came first in the USSA 21.km Championship in Durban in 2012. This is the same year the VUT Athletics team also won the USSA Championship. He also qualified for the FISU Games but due to financial challenges the competition

was called off. The highlight of his career was when he received an incentive from the Minister of Sports Fikile Mbalula after an outstanding performance in the World Student Games. More good news is that VUT Athletics Club was named the Sport Club of The Year 2012/2013. The club always produces national and international standard athletes under the watchful eyes of Coach Joseph Diale, who also scooped the Coach of The Year Award. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sports, Diale says he is very proud of what he has achieved as coach and as an individual. However, Diale says he could not have achieved this if it wasn’t for his athletes, who work hard at training. He also thanks the VUT management for the success of the club, and individuals. “I wish to thank all the VUT management for the support they always give to our athletes whenever there is a competition - locally and internationally,” he says.

Sedibeng Children’s Haven in Vereeniging and Nokhupila Community Centre in Springs each received a cheque of R40 000, thanks to Verref’s golf day. Tim Courtney (Chairman of Vereeniging Refractories) and André Brisley (Managing Director of Verref Elgin), han ded over the cheques.

VEREENIGING. - Vereeniging Refractories recently hosted their Third Annual Charity Golf Day at the Maccauvlei Golf Club, which resulted in great fun for players and huge smiles from charity organisastions. Last year the event raised R100 000, which was donated to Nokhupila Community Centre in Springs and Sedibeng Children’s Haven in Vereeniging. This year the economy played a role and although the amount could not be matched, both organisations once again went home smiling ... each with a cheque of R40 000. Verref thanks the players, suppliers, customers and business partners for supporting the initiative. Apart from the charity aspect of the day, it must be highlighted that the annual Verref Golf Day has established itself as one of the best organised and pleasant golf days for players.

Safa Sedibeng regional squads selected

Zacharia Nale

SEDIBENG. - It was a busy weekend for Safa Sedibeng Regional Head Coach Thulani Mthimkulu as the regional squads were selected at Shakespeare and Saul Tsotetsi Sports Complexes on Saturday and Sunday. Mthimkulu, who coordinated the process, believes that there is lots of potential as far as talent is concerned in this region. However, he says that he was aware that good talent was also left behind due to the challenges some of the areas experienced. He believes this is something that needs to be addressed in the near future to ensure that all the players attend the trials. For example, Mthimkulu says 162 players turned out for the trials for the u/13 and u/15s. Given the statistics Mthimkulu says Sebokeng and Evaton jointly brought 57 players while Boitshepiville brought 18 players and Lesedi only 11 players in the u/13 category. In u/15 trials Sebokeng and Evaton brought 58 players while Boitshepiville brought only 18 players. To make things worse, Midvaal did not have one representative in both the u/13 and u/15 while Lesedi brought only the u/13s. Mthimkulu says these are some of the challenges that need to be dealt with in the near future to give all youngsters a fair chance to participate in trials of this kind. “I will compile the report to Safa Sedibeng regarding this situation because we were expecting other areas to bring their players as this is the Sedibeng squad,” he says On the other hand, Mthimkulu also suggested that the criteria change next year along with how to select the squads. On Sunday, Mthimkulu was at the Saul Tsotetsi Sports Complex where the Sedibeng regional ladies squad for u/13 and u/15 was Right: Safa Sedibeng regional squads we re selected over the weekend at Shake speare Stadium and Saul Tsotetsi Sports Centre on Saturday and Sunday. also selected. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sport, Mthimkulu says he will make some request to Safa Sedibeng as a way forward when it comes to the selection of the teams according to the areas. The Sedibeng Regional

squad will be among the Safa regions that will participate at the Futsal Inter-Provincial Championship scheduled to take place at Ngoako Ramathlodi Stadium in Seshego from November 27-30.

Boxing development tournament Zacharia Nale

SEBOKENG. - Expect sparks to fly when the Sedibeng Boxing Association in conjunction with the Soweto Boxing Association hosts Boxing Development scheduled to take place at the Saul Tsotetsi Stadium on Saturday. This mouth-watering news was revealed to Sedibeng Ster Sport by Thanduxolo Madikizela from Emfuleni Local Municipal Sports and Recreation. The tournament is part of the ongoing boxing revival in the Sedibeng region. According to Madikizela they expect boxing clubs from as far afield as Soweto to ‘trade leather’ on Saturday. Former boxing greats Aaron ‘Ak47’ Kabi’s boxing club will also take part in this long-awaited amateur boxing tournament. Madikizela says the first bout will start at 12:00 while weighing of boxers will start from 9:00. The event presents Sedibeng boxers with an opportunity to showcase their God-given talent against their Soweto counterparts. Some local boxing names expected to honour the event include Bongani Mahlangu from Boipatong. Madikizela says this is the last tournament of the year. “The tournament is part of our campaign to restore boxing in Sedibeng region and I want to thank the Soweto Boxing Association for accepting our invitation and also helping us revive the sport in this region,” he says. Meanwhile, Madikizela urges all Sedibeng region residents to come in numbers to support the initiative on Saturday. He believes the tournament will take Sedibeng boxing to the next level.
