Thetha FM does it again Mduduzi Mathebula

SEDIBENG. – Top local radio station Thetha FM, known for one of its now defunct programme against satanism, has so inspired people that it has received a grand SABC Gospel Crown Award for Best Community Radio Show. The sixth annual SABC Gospel Crown Awards were held at ICC Durban on Sunday where all the top gospel musical composers and preachers gathered to witness the awarding of outstanding individuals and stations that worked hard throughout the year. Through mostly public votes, Thetha FM was among the top community radio stations to be recognised for its hard work. The station’s ‘Lefa Pheto Gospel Tunes’ programme hosted by acclaimed Reverend Lefa Pheto was awarded for being the best for the se-

cond time in a row. Last year it also received the same prize. During an exclusive interview with Sedibeng Ster, Pheto was ecstatic and said: “I have finally prevailed, being the best among the best, but it could only have happened through the grace of God. I am nothing special but God has shown His merciful hand and favoured me and my family. I went through trials and tribulations, and He picked me up. “I went through hardship and He raised me up, and with this award, He has blessed me.” Thetha FM Station CEO Jimmy

Dlamini says that the award is for everyone who has supported the station through tough times and not an individual as some would like to believe. He adds that they are working hard to redeem their status, due to the impairment, apparently caused to the station by the satanic programme which took too much of their time. “We are very thankful to the listeners who showed their support throughout. We are working hard to show character and dignity by producing quality shows,” says Dlamini. Dlamini and programmes manager Charles ‘Mochacho the master DJ’ Motaung and a few other board members were amongst those who made the journey to Durban to receive the award.

The acclaimed Reverend Lefa Pheto is seen here in studio with the awards his program me garnered for two consecutive years for Best Community Radio Show at Thetha FM.

Boundary redeterminations to be considered after 2016

Lerato Serero

SEDIBENG.- The Municipal Demarcation Board (MDB) will consider new municipal boundary proposals for redeterminations only after the 2016 municipal elections following last month’s communication of its final decision on the cases submitted for consideration. MDB chairperson Landiwe Mahlangu says, “It was quite comforting to read about the Eastern Cape Acting Premier Phumulo Masualle pronouncing on discussions that are taking place to reduce the number of munici-

palities to ensure efficiency, viability and sustainability. This effort is not taking place in the Eastern Cape but includes other provinces where the MDB has recently interacted with the local SALGA structures on similar challenges.” He adds that in as much as discussions are taking place, the only changes are those on which the board has taken a decision that was communicated last month. Any other proposal will only be considered by the board after the 2016 local election. The MDB recently an-

nounced that the Emfuleni Local Municipality, Midvaal Local Municipality and Sedibeng District Municipality be incorporated and form a Metropolitan City. The MDB has already given information to the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) for it to comment on the impact of the Board’s decision and will soon be embarking on a ward delimitation process, part of which will be to ensure a smooth transition of the affected municipalities to effectively function on the first day of the actual implementation.

Although there is limited formal data on the subject, the number of deaths caused by unsafe abortion is likely far higher than recorded, since the NCCEMD only took into account cases in public health facilities. jured and had to receive medical attention at the scene before they were rushed to hospital. A group of foreign nationals who supported the bakkie driver, also a foreigner, crowded the scene. According to police at the scene, the taxi driver had no valid driver’s license and his taxi was not roadworthy. An argument erupted when one of the foreigners asked the officer to write everything down. An officer, who did not realise that a journalist was present when the verbal argument started, lashed out at the foreigner, telling him to shut up or be sent back to his country. Police had not responded to a media enquiry at the time of going to print.

Skelem disappoints DA as she resigns

Lazarus Dithagiso

Puleng Skelem is no longer with the DA. She was the party’s Ward 15 councillor. Photo: Lazarus Dithagiso

VEREENIGING. - Rife rumours have been confirmed that Democratic Alliance (DA) Ward 15 Councillor Puleng Skelem has resigned from the party. An unconfirmed rumour was that she is about to cross the floor and tie the knot with African National Congress (ANC). Her resignation has left the DA without a choice but to get ready for by-elections. When confronted to put the record straight, she asked Sedibeng Ster to wait until later. ‘I still have to meet with my employer to put the facts on the table.’ She did not want to elaborate further on rumours that she has been promised a better position in the ANC office of the Sedibeng District Municipality. Sedibeng Ster can confidently con-

firm that the councillor is under pressure after being approached by the ruling party. A reliable source told Sedibeng Ster that Skelem decided to jump from the moving wagon before it was too late. A source revealed that a meeting held behind closed doors with the party had brought a smile to her face. This is after she was made a big offer, said the sources. A better position is being put on hold for her pending her signature on the dotted line. Regional DA chairperson Daddy Mollo and Emfuleni caucus leader Danie Hoffman (DA) confirmed that Skelem no longer numbers among their members. The DA

will still have to advertise her position for a fitting candidate for by-elections. Currently an acting councillor has been appointed to keep the DA flame burning, reports Mollo. Her resignation will not affect the ward. “We’re still going to win that ward as we did in the past when we took it from the ANC,” explained Mollo. “As she joined the DA willingly, we wish her health and life in her new position.” Asked whether the DA knew that apparently she is negotiating with the ANC, Hoffman responded that anything is possible in the political game - especially toward elections next year.

VEREENGING. – The regional chairperson of PAC Sedibeng Ndade Mxunya declared to the media on Wednesday during their mini strike at the Sedibeng District Municipality Hall that Apa Pooe and Abel Radebe are no longer PAC members. They have been immediately expelled from their positions. Mxunya’s statement was accompanied by a letter from DC Secretary, Themba Mrobongwana. The letter states that Radebe is ill disciplined, disrespectful and undermines the party’s constitution. The PAC regional committee has also resolved to stop the working processes at the Sedibeng District Municipality offices in order to get the attention of the authorities and make their intentions clear - that they want Apa Pooe out of office. Apparently relevant authorities at both municipalities were notified of the pair’s expulsion from the party but nothing had been done. Mxunya says that both councillors have been replaced with the appropriate candidates. At the time of going to print Sedibeng Ster could not reach the pair for their comment on the matter

Sedibeng Religious Fraternity Prayer & Thanks Giving Ceremony SEDIBENG.- The Sedibeng District Municipality will today (November 21) hold a specially arranged prayer and thanks giving ceremony at the Vereeniging Civic Theatre where the Sedibeng religious fraternity will pray for a smooth transition to the new Metro system. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Acting Director of External Communications, Lebo Mofokeng says, “The road to the Metro has not been an easy task, but yet we have conquered. It is through significant stakeholders such as the religious sector, that the municipality was able to mobilise communities to support this initiative.” The Sedibeng Executive mayor Simon Mofokeng and the Members of the Mayoral committee at the beginning of the year went to different churches in an effort to invoke the blessings of The All Mighty, and to encourage the support of communities in the Sedibeng region. The ceremony will begin at 9:00.

‘Re a leboha, Siyabonga, Thank you.’

9R_Na\ @R_R_\ In just under two weeks the personnel at your favourite newspaper will be going on leave to get a well deserved rest. I have had the privilege of being at the helm of this publication for the past three years and these have been memorable and fulfilling years. This job demands punctuality, determination, patience and most of all passion. Most of the tasks I

have to fulfill would not have been possible had it not been for the support of my family, friends and colleagues. They say that no leader has an easy job. It is because of this paper that one has gained experience in a larger essence. Experience on how to deal with politicians, a rioting community, a dissatisfied client and a disgruntled colleague. In the few years of its existence the paper has gained such prominence that you could swear it has been here for decades. But the strength of this paper could not have come from only us, the staff, but also from you, our loyal reader, and for that we are in-

deed indebted to you. We may have plans sitting before us on a weekly basis but had it not been for you, we would not have the content and for that we say THANK YOU. Over the years that I have been here I have seen people come and go. A few have remained and these are the people that have become accustomed to your ‘wants’ and ‘needs.’ We have always seen ourselves as a publication that wants to bring something better to the people, better standards of living and greater happiness to the masses of the people through the stories that we write. We have a great objective – ‘The light on the hill’- which we aim to reach by working for the betterment of mankind, not only in one community but anywhere we may lend a helping hand. If it were not for that, this newspaper would not be worth the paper it is printed

on. If this publication can continue to make someone more comfortable with their surroundings and life, give some father or mother a greater feeling of security about children who are abusing nyaope, a feeling that there will be work for the unemployed, a promise that we will continue to be their mouthpiece and that we shall never cease to be there in their time of need, then our job is done. Therefore the success of this paper in many years to come lies with you, as it always has and as it always will. Continue to be a pillar of strength, and where we have wronged you, please bear with us. Where we have pleased you, appreciate it! Having said this we would like to say THANK YOU once again, for the years that have passed and the years that we know you are going to continue being with us. Take care. Lerato...

Residents demand councillor step down Khutlo Tharo reunion Lazarus Dithagiso

SEBOKENG. - Emfuleni Local Municipality Ward 17 Councillor, M Sikukula has fallen under the scrutiny of some residents of Kwa-Masiza and Sebokeng hostels. Residents demand that Sikukula step down with immediate effect and if he fails to do so, they threaten to engage in an unprotected strike that involves destruction and the barricading of roads. Community leader Wiseman Mxwayo told Sedibeng Ster after a meeting on November 4 with Housing MMC Councillor Manana Khubeka that they had already submitted a petition of about 400 signatures for the councillor’s resignation to the offices of Sedibeng District Municipality Mayor Mahole Mofokeng and Emfuleni Local Municipality Mayor Greta Hlongwane. Sikukula’s ‘sin’ sees him accused of hiring his alleged girlfriend known only as Sarah as community liaison officer (CLO) and his relative Lungile Magenene as a local director officer (LDO) at the RDP building project near the Golden Garden on the Golden Highway. The community first met on Sunday, November 3, to voice their anger, accusing Sikukula of ruling with an iron fist. They said most of the people hired are from his sphere of associates. Initially, the aim of the community was to meet with Khubeka on site. They wanted to stop the project until their demands were met. Sarah and Magenene are painted as an example of pure nepotism. Khubeka confirmed that she met with the residents but refused to reveal the details pending a further meeting. She denied having temporarily suspended two officials. Khubeka refuted complaints that there were divisions, saying the community is united. ELM speaker Mse-

SEBOKENG. - Youth that takes care of its elderly is Youth that knows where it is heading. This became clear when members of the Boiketlong Dropping and Development Centre recently threw senior citizen Elda Mazongolo a birthday party to remember. Mazongolo turned 110. At the celebration, Mzongolo stated that it was good to see that there are still some youths who respect their elders and do nice things for them. “We met ‘gogo’ when we were doing house visits to determine how many community members need help. When we were told that ‘gogo’ would be celebrating her 110th birthday, we saw it as a great opportunity to help her celebrate the long life she has been given by God,” said Mochaedi Mosia, project manager at the

Centre. Mosia adds that he is grateful to all stakeholders who came on board to help make the event a success. “The event was very sucessful and we managed to put a big smile on ‘gogo’s’ face. The centre’s aim is to bring development into the poverty-stricken Boiketlong. “Our centre aims to bring development into Boiketlong. We currently feed kids that come from different schools and we hope to one day teach members of the community to plant and produce their own food.” “I would like to urge members of the community to come and join our project. There are many things that we still need to achieve and change in this community. They can be part of that change,”concludes Mosia. Members of the Boiketlong Dro ping and Deve lopment Cen tre recently threw senior citizen Elda Mazongolo a party in re cognition of her 110th birthday.

Impromptu swimming pool dangerous

Moleboheng Chaha

SEBOKENG. - As we head towards the festive season, parents should be wary of the dangers their kids may face. A trench full of dirty water on the Golden Highway is being used as a swimming pool by young boys residing in and around Boitumelo. Unable to appreciate the dangers, these young boys get butt-naked and dive straight into the filthy water, swallowing it without taking any precautions or worrying about any consequences. The group of 13 boys, with the youngest being six, stated that the trench was their “Hangout spot.” Seventeen-year-old Stephen Mofokeng states that he and the other kids have been swimming in the trench for

a long time and he does not think they will get sick from swimming in or swallowing the dirty water: “We are aware of the dangers that swimming in the water may have, but we have been swimming here for a while and none of us has gotten sick fom the dirty water.” Mamiki Mokoena, a resident, says that they have spoken to the kids about swimming in the trench before but they do not listen. “What these kids are doing is dangerous. There is no supervision by parents and one of them might even drown. As we head towards the festive season, I would advise that parents keep a very strict eye on these kids and give them strict instructions about coming here.”

SHOOTING FROM THE HIP With Zacharia Nale

If Shooting From The Hip may ask - what are these SAB League coaches doing at the training grounds? Shooting From The Hip is referring to the football some of the Safa Sedibeng SAB League teams are playing. It is not as if Shooting From The Hip is criticising SAB League coaches but gentlemen, we need some creativity at this level. I know some of the teams want to collect points early in the season and that is why we see this kind of boring football on weekends. Maybe Shooting From The Hip

20 November - 26 November 2013

Guys, entertain the spectators! expects much better from some of the teams or coaches, especially those coaches whom I know are fond of possession football. My plea to the SAB League coaches is – Guys! As much as we want promotion, you must not overlook the main objective of football – which is to entertain spectators. Do you think those soccer fans come to watch your teams play just because they have nothing else to do? Wrong! They come to watch your teams play because they want to see good football from those youngsters. Like Shooting From The Hip always says, “We don’t go to stadiums and pay to watch ‘robots’ in action.” But having said this, some of the teams in Safa SAB League play exciting football. It is not as if I am biased, but one of those teams is Sailor FC which is coa-

ched by Thulani ‘Japan’ Mthimkhulu. The fact of the matter is that winning the league doesn’t mean a team must play ‘skop and jag’ football. It is disgusting to hear coaches saying that in the SAB League there is no time to play fancy football. This is not true and coaches who say that are FAKES. For example, over the weekend, coaches made some silly comments against a local academy saying they can’t score because they play like Orlando Pirates. Really! Some development coaches are jealous to see certain teams playing a brand of football that is pleasing in the eyes of the spectators. If all development coaches understand that at this level it is all about laying a solid foundation, then they can learn from their colleagues. There is no point in some coaches being happy just be-

cause they beat Ama Cheese Boys even if they offer nothing in the field of play except winning. The soccer I grew up watching was inspired by individual brilliance and was characterised by: dribbling past a number of opponents with relative ease, long and solo runs by midfielders, down the middle, sudden and completely unexpected defense-splitting passes and creating a goal out of nothing. Today’s soccer strategists and coaches sternly maintain that soccer is a team game and that individual excellence should be minimised in order for a team to produce the most effective results. Whether such intellectuals are right or wrong is a matter of discussion for another day, but their preaching has markedly reduced the beauty and excitement of the game.

Grassroots football is football for all Zacharia Nale

ORANGE FARMS. - Orange Farm Local Football Association in conjunction with the Department of Sports and Recreation Gauteng and the Orange Farm Sports Council will hold a Grassroots Football U/6 Festival scheduled to take place at Stretford Park, Extension 6, on November 23. This mouth-watering news was revealed to Sedibeng Ster Sports by Zacharia Ndweni, the main driver of the event. Ndweni, former Safa Sedibeng regional executive officer, says they invite community soccer teams to participate. He believes the best way to attract new players to football is to give youngsters access in their own environment, whatever their age, sex, physical condition, skin-colour, religion or ethnic origin. “The project is a collective effort to identify more talent in the area. There is a lot of talent out the re but there is not enough effort to reach it, and this event will help find new talent. We urge the c ommunity to bring th eir children because every child is welcome to atAll roads will lead to Orange Farm for tend,” he cona u/6 grassroots football festival at cludes.

Lacklustre SAB League affair Zacharia Nale

SEBOKENG. - It was smash-and-grab when VUT FC beat United Scientists FC 2-0 in the Safa Sedibeng SAB League match at the Zone 15 Stadium on Sunday. The game started on a low note with both sides displaying boring moves despite the fact that local soccer fans came in big numbers. The audience went home disapointed. The home side looked like the better side on the field but their strikers evidently left their scoring soccer-boots at home. Some of the chances that they missed could even have been converted by a retired striker - with ease. The game went to interval with the score level at 0-0. The first half was so boring some of the fans ended up coaching from the stands. However, VUT FC came out smoking in the second half, attacking their opponents from every angle in search of the goals. Their hard work paid off when they finally found the back of the net. At this stage ‘The Students’ were toying around with their opponents who never offered any resistance. It came as no surprise

when the game ended with VUT FC winning 2-0. The home side has itself to blame for their defeat. They could have wrapped this game up in the first half if they hadn’t wasted shots. It was “Eisssssh, Eissssssh” from the home team’s bench and fans every time their trusted strikers missed the target. In another Safa Sedibeng SAB League, Vaal Milano trashed the hapless Verona FC 4-2 in yet another dreary game played at the George Thabe Stadium on Sunday. The Bophelong-based side was the first to break the deadlock but Vaal Milano equalised after the goalkeeper’s blunder. In fact, poor goalkeeping gave the home team three points on a silver platter. In all fairness both teams played boring football, kicking the socks out of each and every ball. Just like VUT FC and United Scientist FC’s game, this game failed to live up to expectation. Meanwhile, both games were characterised by protests that Sedibeng Ster Sports could not demystify.
