material health, as well as child health and development - known as Programme of Appropriate of Technology on Health (PATH) - reports that a threemonth-old child was rescued after serious neglect by his mother. Thankfully, a neighbour alerted the Vanderbijlpark Trauma Counselling Empowerment Centre after a child had spent the night locked in a house. The baby was found in a weak but stable condition. His 19-year-old mother allegedly left him while going out on drinking spree. The neighbours heard a child crying inside the house. They went there and knocked on the door, but still there was no answer. Finally they forced the door open. They were met by the sight of a baby trying to crawl across the bed.
Community Health Workers (CHW) traced the mother who had been bingeing for some three weeks. The Child Protection Unit followed up the case. This led to the child being taken to his grandmother. Social workers at the Trauma Centre are investigating the matter. The baby was subsequently taken to a place of safety. The social worker declared the mother unfit to be in custody of the child until further investigation. Buwa thanks neighbours for their co-operation. She appeals to parents - especially towards the festive season - not to abandon children.

13yearold ‘wife’ arrested for killing husband Lerato Serero
ORANGE FARMS:- A 13-year- old girl was recently released into the care of her parents after she was arrested and charged with the murder of her husband in Orange Farms. It is alleged that a neighbour of the couple heard them arguing and shouting at each other at around 20:45. The neighbour went to check on the commotion. On his arrival he found the door locked. The commotion had grown worse.
He kicked the door in but it was too late as the 25-year-old husband was already lying dead in a pool of blood. Police were called to the scene and two knives were seized, the young wife had fled. While they were busy at the scene, the young wife handed herself to Police. She was arrested and charged with murder. She appeared briefly in the Vereeniging Magistrates Court and was released in to the care of her parents. The case was postponed to December 12.

Bogus initiation schools burned down Pinky Mofoekeng
SHARPEVILLE. - As the festive season approaches the money-making schemes of fake initiation schools also operates in different parts of the Vaal. Since last week parents have been seen going in and out of police stations claiming that their children have been kidnapped and expressing the fear that they were taken to initiation schools. It is believed that people open these schools in order to profit from the parents, not taking into account the serious implications. About 18 initiation schools ranging from Vereeniging, Eikenhof, Lawley, Fochville and Crown Mines in Johannesburg we-
re burned and an estimated number of 650 under-age boys from age 11 to 17 were rescued. Apparently most of the schools are associated with gangsterism which forms a practice that is spreading all over the Sedibeng region. The operation started last month whereby Police found that most of the schools failed to meet the correct criteria such as application to occupy land, a parent-consent form, and medical test. Solomon Mofokeng, chairperson of the Sedibeng Initiation Tradition Sergeant Committee says, “Some of these initiation schools are legit but because of the fake ones we are forced to inspect every school to see
if the children are not kidnapped. Every year we sit with the same problem as these teachers do not want to follow the law so we will take matters into our hands and save our children from these deadly schools.” Police spokesperson Rapule Pitso confirms that the schools were set on fire and closed down and that no arrests have been made as the boys refused to open cases, fearing intimidation by gang members or rejection when they want to join the gangs.”

‘Tis the season to be jolly’ 9R_Na\ @R_R_\ The festive season is upon us again, and it is a time to be merry in the company of loved ones and friends. An entire year has come and gone, and it seems as if it was only a short while ago that the festive season of 2012 had been with us. As we prepare to unwind, relax and celebrate, it is important to pause for a moment and reflect on the year that has passed. This moment of reflection will help us gauge how far we have come and what still needs to be done in order to accomplish the objectives we had set for 2013. To face the future with confidence, we need to draw from lessons of the past. It is that time of the year again where every Piet, Jan and Joe is going to be in a cheerful mood and forget that January is around the corner. This is the time of the month where many people lose their lives through vehicle accidents and many other incidents that are sometimes bey-
ond their control. But most prefer to be plain stupid at this time of the year. Year in and year out we see this in our communities where people decide to be plain reckless with their lives and those of their loved ones. Most major companies are closing for the December holidays and this brings sorrow to a lot of wives who will only see their husbands in January, ‘bonus less.’ Young people are going missing as they are ‘kidnapped’ and taken to mountains (initiation schools). Some, at this age and time decide to indulge in reckless drinking, reckless sexual behaviour and many other activities that are dangerous. To face the future with confidence, we need to draw from lessons of the past. We also need to be aware that there are those amongst us that are less fortunate and that as we prepare to celebrate with our loved ones we put them into our minds and give them the little that we can so that they too can have a festive season. It will also be wise to those who become reckless at this time of the year to take care of themselves and enjoy responsibly remembering that the festive season is not the end of the world. Having said that, remember to plan, enjoy and live responsibly this festive season. Lerato...

Rioting vendors told to go
Moleboheng Chaha and Lazarus Dithagiso
SEBOKENG. - Moshoeshoe Road and Mandela Square Road came to a standstill when hundreds of street vendors ran amok, declaring that the government had failed themon Friday. The vendors were mostly made up of the region’s youth, who use their different businesses as a means of survival. Anger and frustration ignited when they were told by the Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM) by-law representatives to remove the permanent structures they had built on pavements or at roadsides.ELM MMC for Local Economic Development (LED) Khulu Malindi arrived and tried to calm down the violent protestors, who carried on burning tyres, throwing rubbish into the road and closing it with rocks. Some protesters told Malindi that they had
been to his office repeatedly but no solution was found. “We have been sent from pillar to post and it is only now that you avail yourself, trying to convince us.” they told him. Malindi says, “As the government, we have not removed anyone from the roadside. We are against the permanent structures built. The vendors are not aware that they have built on municipal sites. There are big developments coming.” He said the informal structures could only negatively impact the value of the areas. Malindi added that there was miscommunication between the municipality and the vendors. “We are going to build permanent stalls for the vendors to operate. They must start removing the permanent structures and substitute them for temporary ones they can take home.” Malindi concluded.

Betty Mothonyane, a nurse from Boipatong Clinic, gave a motivational talk to people infected. Her message was that they could live a longer, healthier life. She said, “The stigma in our people’s minds is the one making us feel rejected by the community. We’re part of the body of Christ.” Mothonyane said, “ We need to embrace and accept those who think they have been neglected by society.” Pastor Mpelane appreciates the caring love shown by community leaders like Ronyuza. The church as a caring society, appreciates the deep concern shown by leaders. “Our role as a church of God is to pray together as households. Let’s pray for people who have lost hope in our Almighty God, thinking that their prayers are not receiving answers,” said Pastor Mpelane.

R12 000 for electricity installation
BEVERLY HILLS. - Certain parts of this area have seen this city declared the darkest of them all. Safety is not part of inhabitants’ lives. Needless to say, these areas are not popular. Residents who do not have electricity showed their anger and grief on Saturday when a road was closed with huge stones. People showed nothing but anger. “We were told to pay R 12 000 for installation of electricity,” said the masses that closed the roads of Beverly Hills. Resident Lazarus Radebe says he bought a stand in 1997. “We were asked to pay R12 000 for installation of electricity, while others paid 180 and 150 for installation. I need answers. We need the right person to give us a good and relevant reason why you should pay R12 000 for in-
stallation,” said Radebe during the protest. Other residents stood up with posters that communicated their rage. They further claim that they receive no help from the municipality and that the Mayor said the land did not belong to the Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM) but was private land. All efforts to reach ELM spokesperson Klaas Mofomme were fruitless at time going to press. Residents further say that the darkness they live in enables criminals to place their lives in danger. They urge the provincial government to intervene. Beverly Hills residents closed roads due to lack of electricity recently. Photo: Mduduzi Mathebula.
What’s happening at the Bongani Mabaso Eco Park SASOLBURG. - Work at the Bongani Mabaso Eco Park in Vaalpark is progressing well and the aim is to reopen the facility to the public. According to Herman van der Walt, Senior Manager SHE: Environment at Sasol in Sasolburg, Sasol closed the Eco Park for a number of reasons. According to Van der Walt the main reason for closing the park was to ensure that Sasol complies with its legal obligation to manage land belonging to Sasol in accordance with Sasol’s group-wide SHE minimum requirements. At the moment Sasol is removing two problem plant species that pose serious risks to the biodiversity of the park, being ‘bankrotbossie’ (also known as bankrupt bush or zigzag bush) and purple top. This aggressive action is taken to avoid the invasive species driving local native species to extinction. Closing the park to visitors, and particularly to vehicles, also granted vegetation a chance
to re-grow in areas where vehicles made illegal roads in the park. “Any vehicle driving in a non-designated area causes damage to the environment,” says Van der Walt. “Just like in the Kruger National Park, roads are made in the Eco Park in specific areas to allow nature to stay undisturbed in other areas. There are vulnerable species such as grass owls, snake species and hedgehogs in the park that could easily be killed by an undiscerning driver,” he continues. Through Sasol’s infrastructure development programme, Ikusasa, new ablution facilities are being built in the park. The building will have male and female facilities, and has a wash-up area where nature lovers visiting the park can do their dishes in future. Van der Walt urges visitors to keep in mind that the Bongani Mabaso Eco Park is not a holiday resort, but a patch of earth in a highly industri-
alised area where residents can come and experience the wonders of nature. “Please visit the Bongani Mabaso Eco Park when it re-
opens at the end of the month, but do so with the respect that such a natural environment deserves and only leave your footprints behind,” says Van der Walt.

SEDIBENG.- The Sedibeng District Municipality (SDM) reached a momentous milestone on Tuesday, when the Auditor General of South Africa released its 2012/2013 Audit Opinions on Gauteng Municipalities. The District Municipality became the first municipality in Gauteng to reach the 2014 target of Operation Clean Audit. Operation Clean Audit was launched in 2009. Audit opinions on the affairs of government departments are expressed in terms that are often not understood by the general public. The worst opinion is an ‘Adverse Opinion’ which states that the financial statements do not fairly present the financial position, results of operations, and changes in financial position, in conformity with generally accepted accounting principles. At a function held at Thaba Ya Batsawa-
na, the AG handed over the final Audit outcomes to all Gauteng Municipalities and municipal entities for the 2012/2013 financial years. The Sedibeng District Municipality was the only municipality in Gauteng to achieve the ‘Clean Audit’ status. Three other municipal entities achieved clean audits. The three local municipalities in Sedibeng, that of Emfuleni, Midvaal and Lesedi all achieved Unqualified Audits which shows that all municipalities are on track to meet the 2014 OPCA targets. In her address to the meeting of all Gauteng Mayors and Municipal Managers, the Corporate Executive of the Auditor-General of SA (Gauteng,) Mabatho Sedikela described Sedibeng District Municipality as “a beacon of hope for all Gauteng Municipalities.”

VANDERBIJLPARK. - Members of the Greater Vaal Scholar Transport with the motto: ‘For the education and care of our children’, gathered in remembrance of their co-founders who passed on and also launched new T-shirts. The glamorous mother of all functions was hosted at ‘Mr Cool’ aka `Cool Cave’, at the Palm Court Hotel on November 28. All seven branches in the Sedibeng region from as far as Roshnee, Rus-ter-vaal and Bophelong graced the occasion. The spokesperson of the association, Sello Mahlase, said the association was established 14 years ago. He said there was an appeal to parents to look after the children and keep them away from roads, especially during the festive holidays. “Thanks are in order for the support we received from our client-commuters throughout the year,” said Mahlase. Parents are advised to register the children in time to avoid disappointment next year. Greater Vaal Scholar Transport extends its wishes to commuters for a Merry Christmas and a Prosperous and Happy New Year.

SEBOKENG.- The Healing Hands Organisation recently held an ‘Adopt a child’ event at the Emfuleni Swimming Pools. The aim of the event was to show orphans, vulnerable children and child headed families that the organisation cares about them. Each staff member adopted a child on the day. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster, Healing Hands Organisation Center Manager, Oupa Shumeni says that the purpose of the event was also to give support, happiness and most of all,
give the care that most of the children do not receive. “We decided to adopt 60 kids to treat them to an outing and gifts on the day and most of the beneficiaries are from Zone 12 and Kanana Village. During the festive season when we give love and gifts to our children, these kids are left out and as the organisation it is our duty to extend our care and support to these kids. We would like to say thank you to Midway busses for their transport as they drove us freely to ensure that we deliver a good service to our beneficiaries,” Shumeni concludes. SEDIBENG.- The Kliprivier South African Police Services together with members of the community, particularly the youth, embarked on a ‘16 Days of No Violence against Women and Children’ Campaign last week. According to Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Happy Nape this programme should be continuous and the community should also be made aware that men also suffer abuse. 16 Days of Activism (of No Violence against Women and Children) is an annual national commemoration and recognition of the vulnerability of Women and Child-
ren as victims of crime and acknowledges their sensitive status. It is an awareness campaign during the period November 25 to December 10 each year. The 16 Days Campaign is dedicated to raising awareness about gender-based violence as a Human Rights issue, strengthening local work around violence against women and children, providing a forum to develop and sharing of strategies. The South African Police Services survey estimates that at least one out of every three women in the region will be beaten, raped or otherwise abused during her lifetime.

SEBOKENG. - Christmas came early for the elders of the ST’ Timothy Uniting Presbyterian Church of South Africa in Zone12 recently. This is subsequent to them being showered with gifts at the thanksgiving event organised by the church’s Social Responsibility Committee along with members of the congregation. “Today we are here to celebrate the senior members of the church. Some of them are now too old to come to church. We want them to know that they are missed,” says Rosina Mpondu, media organiser at the church. The church saw this as important because some elderly people were not going to get anything nice over the festive season as they live alone and have no one to take care of them. Nolusindiso Kula added that it was important for the senior members to be remembered and celebrated as they were the ones who had formed the foundation of the church. “We have brought the elders here today because we want them to also keep in touch with each another,” concluded Kula.

MEYERTON. - Inspirational community leader, National Power, energy management solutions, with the assistance of Develco, a company based overseas, opened their hearts to fulfil the dreams of infected and affected orphans and destitute children, by making sure they find joy during the Festive Season. This was when they donated a massive and expensive generator, food and more to the Doulos Care Centre. According to Dave Bekink, chief executive officer of National Power, the generator will be of a great assistance to pump oxygen into the bottles for children, should the centre experience an electrical power failure. Emma van der Merwe, founder of the centre, is optimistic that the children will find a solution that enables them to cope through the assistance received from good samaritans. Van der Merwe makes a challenge to stakeholders to assist as part of their social responsibility. “Our children attending school, are placed here until they reach the age of 18, unless they further their education to tertiary. The centre survived through the subsidy received from Social Development. The child and youth care centre is situated near Three Rivers.

Mighty Stars crowned Midas U/17 Champions
Zacharia Nale
SHARPEVILLE. - Mighty Stars FC was crowned the Midas Development Soccer Tournament kings at James Ground on Saturday. They achieved this by beating bitter rivals Vaal Milano FC 1-0 in this tense final. Stars booked their place in the final after they beat Ama Cheese Boys 3-0 in the semi-final match, while Vaal Milano walloped Vaal Manchester FC 2-0 to go through. Mighty Stars FC received soccer kits and medals for their effort, while Vaal Milano and Ama Cheese Boys received silver and bronze
medals, respectively. According to Midas sponsorship manager Thapelo Molise the arrangement with the organisers of the tournament was for the u/15s; however, when he got there he was told that it was now for the u/17s. To make things worse, some of the teams brought their u/15s and it was unfair for these youngsters to compete against the more mature u/17 players. Nevertheless, Molise says he was overwhelmed by the talent on display that day. “I’m very impressed by the talent of these boys and I have no doubt this tourna-
ment will continue to unearth more talent in this region. We as Midas Vanderbijlpark branch will continue to support the development of football in this region,” he says.
Molise says the tournament is part of Midas’s bid to plough back into the community and toward the upliftment of football in this region.

Pooe Festive Games around corner Zacharia Nale
EVATON. - It’s that time of year when local soccer fans will inevitably flock to the Behermen Rovers Soccer Grounds to watch local ‘diski nine’ (outstanding football) for the annual Pooe Festival Games kick-off on December 15. The tournament is the initiative of the Kgokgi Sports Foundation as part of sports development in Sedibeng. This legacy tournament is one of the oldest tournaments in Sedibeng whereby local soccer youngsters are given a platform from which to showcase their talent. Some of the notable names who graced this tournament in the past include the likes of Steve ‘Chippa’ Lekoelea and other PSL local stars. The winner of the tournament will smile all the way to the bank with a cheque of R80 000, medals, a trophy and soccer kits, while the second place team will pocket R40 000, medals and soccer kits. Third place will walk away with R30 000 and medals, while fourth place will receive R20 000.
In the u/17 category, the winner will receive R6 000, medals, soccer kits and a trophy, while the runner-ups will get R3 500, medals and soccer kits. Third place will go home with R2 000 and medals while fourth-place will pocket R1 000. The winner in u/15 will receive R4 000, soccer kits, medals and a trophy, while the runner-ups will get R2 500, soccer kits and medals. The winner in the u/13 division will receive R3000, soccer kits, a trophy and medals. The runners-up will receive R1500, soccer kits and medals while the third placed will get R750 and medals. The tournament will start on a point-system format with the two top teams proceeding to the next round. Tournament Director Mondli Nkosi says all the teams are invited to come and affiliate as it’s a case of first-come, first-served. Meanwhile the MSC Soccer Tournament semi-finals are scheduled for December 7 and 8 at the George Thabe Stadium.

Barcelona and Milano in a war of words Zacharia Nale
SEDIBENG. - It was an interesting argument that raged between Real Barcelona and Vaal Milano FC managers, namely Junior Gusha and Dingane “Dicks” Tshabalala. This was during the MCS Soccer Tournament at James Grounds on Saturday with the two beating their chests to tell anyone who cared to listen that their teams would win the league come the end of the season. Tshabalala says his team might not have money like his counterparts - referring to Vaal Milano - but tactically his team is rich. This sparked the debate in which Gusha expressed the belief that - if Real Barcelona was tactically rich - they would not have been relegated from the Vodacom League
three seasons ago. Tshabalala continues, “If I had those sponsorships that you guys had, I think my teams would be unstoppable. ‘The problem is that you have money but don’t know how to use it.’ “Listen to me, Dicks, your team will never compete with Vaal Milano because it finished last season in fourth position on the log despite the fact that we played with youngsters. If your team was so much better than ours as you say, then you should have finished at the top of the league last season,” Gusha cut in. The debate went on until the two agreed that the team that beats the other when they clash in the league fixture is the one that will win the league at the end of the season.

No hooligans deserves to be in this newspaper SHOOTING FROM THE HIP
With Zacharia Nale
In case you’re one of those soccer hooligans my message is that ‘we don’t need you near our development as we also won’t bother you
at your ‘graveyard.’ So don’t expect Shooting From The Hip to attend your funeral because you did not respect the future of this country.
A1SSFLF
If a child knows that you always shout at them when they do something wrong they will tease you just to get your attention. The same can be said for football officials/ administrators and supporters in this region. They do wrong in the presence of Shooting From The Hip and then say, “Go and write about us in your column.” Really! Shooting From The Hip doesn’t write about any Tom, Dick and Harry because that would just be a waste of space and ink. How can somebody do something wrong but still be proud to be in a newspaper? Or maybe it’s a case of bad publicity making one famous. To be direct, over the weekend, local supporters passed by in the middle of the field holding alcohol while youngsters played in the Midas Soccer Tournament at James Ground on Saturday. This shows how our local soccer fans don’t respect the development of football. If Shooting From The Hip may ask: ‘Where is our Ubuntu? Can any normal person see the
funny side of this? What kind of society are we? To make matters worse, there was no-one to take charge of the situation. Some said “Go and write about it in Sedibeng Ster.” Is it a case of doing something wrong and waiting for Thursday to see what Shooting From The Hip has to say about you? Or should it be a matter of doing the something right that makes you proud to see your picture or name in the newspaper? Are we living in a time when many believe the world has come to an end? Shooting From The Hip blames the organisers for taking this kind of tournament to such a point. If these soccer fans really love soccer they will go to George Thabe or Shakespeare Stadium to watch these youngsters. But taking this sponsored tournament to grounds such as the James Grounds does NOT benefit the development of football in this region. Shooting From The Hip is of the opinion that our football development has become very cheap. Shooting From The Hip’s message to those hooligans is that you will never see soccer people going to taverns or shebeens to play soccer. NO! This is our football, the future of the country, and it needs to be respected. It doesn’t mean those soccer fans are wrong to do us the favour of coming to watch these boys playing. We really appreciate the support of those who come and support these youngsters. It is not as if all soccer fans are like that. There are those who respect this beautiful game.

Fans go wild as Celta Vigo equalises both teams’ supporters and players exchanged blows. The game had to stop for about five minutes while referees brought the situation under control. In another game which formed part of the MCS Tournament, Junior Lions beat their rivals Zone 3 Arsenal 2-0 to book their place in the semi-final. Vaal Milano FC had to sweat to win before they beat the spirited Manyora 2-1 in an entertaining game to watch; this was while Real Barcelona beat Juventus FC 1-0 to go through to the semi-final stages. The MCS Soccer Tournament semi-final is scheduled to take place at the George Thabe Stadium at the weekend.

SHARPEVILLE. - Celta Givo FC had to wait for the better part of the game to equalise when everyone thought it would be done during the quarter-final of the MCS Soccer Tournament at James Ground on Saturday. This Zone 3-based side had to dig deep to equalise against Tshepiso X1 FC with only three minutes left on the clock to force the game to penalty shoot-outs.
Tshepiso X1 FC shocked Celta Vigo FC supporters when they took an early lead with only 10 minutes into the game. It was a game of missed chances with both teams’ strikers wasteful in front of goals. The game was decided on penalties with Celta Gigo FC beating Tshepiso X1 FC 4-3. The game started on a high tempo with Tshepiso X1 FC giving Celta Vigo FC all sorts of trouble. However, the miss of the day
was when a Celta Vigo FC’s striker missed a glorious chance with only the keeper to beat, to equalise. At this stage, soccer fans were already in the field celebrating but Tshepiso X1 FC’s goalkeeper made a brilliant save. However, with only three minutes remaining, Celta Vigo broke the collective heart of Tshepiso X1’s supporters when they finally equalised, much to the delight of their supporters. Meanwhile, there was an ugly scene when
