SHARPEVILLE.- Crime does not pay! Alleged burglar suspect Koketso ‘Lekeleke’ Mofokeng (22) died a violent death in front of the Sharpeville Police Station last week. This was the grim conclusion of his brutal assault by five men. It is believed that on Wednesday morning

a group of men known to the owner of a famous tavern in Sharpeville accused the suspect of stealing steel gates. They decided to take matters into their own hands and chased him, accusing him of theft and, when they finally caught up with him, they started assaulting and dragging him through the streets. After all the beatings, one of the men decided to drive Mof-

okeng in his bakkie to the police station. It appears that the suspected thief was assaulted and drenched with water before being taken to the police station. The badly assaulted man was in dire condition when he arrived at the station. Paramedics were called to the scene and on arri-

val found the badly beaten man was fighting for his life. They tried to revive him but the he died minutes later in the ambulance. ‘Lekeleke’ as he was known, was apparently no stranger to assault as he was convicted and sentenced to five years in Groenpunt Juvenile Prison for similar crimes. Other cases pended against him, ranging from housebreaking to theft. He was apparently causing the community nothing but a headache. He was consequently assaulted some three months ago by the community for the same crime and for being so notoriously synonymous with ‘nyaope’ around Tshepiso and Sharpeville. In compliance with the constant warning not to take matters into their own hands, because doing so could have serious consequences, the same man who took him to the police station was arrested. Police spokesperson Constable Rapule Pitso confirms that the man was arrested and that he would be charged with murder and more suspects who are implicated will also be charged. He says, “The community should not take matters into their own hands. “If a criminal is caught they should be brought to the station where they will be locked up. We always encourage communities to stop taking matters into their own hands as they will also be arrested”.

The SAPS have ‘allseeingeyes’

VANDERBIJLPARK.- With the festive season operations in full swing, the Vanderbijlpark SAPS has deployed all maximum resources and personnel in a special effort to ensure the safety of the community at local shopping malls and in general. A combined effort bet-

ween alert security personnel from a local mall, and the Vanderbijlpark SAPS sector personnel of the SW area arrested several suspects, and the prevented a planned armed robbery on Saturday, December 7. Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Kinnie

Steyn says that the incident occurred at about 10:15 when the alert security personnel of a well known local mall contacted the SAPS sector vehicle of the SW area regarding two suspicious male suspects sitting in a Ford Bantam bakkie. Constable Lebohang Mohale and his crew ordered the suspects to climb out of the vehicle and commenced to search the suspects and the vehicle. “The members found an AK47 rifle behind the car seat and 27 live rounds of ammunition. Both suspects (aged 42 and 46) were arrested for the illegal possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. It is furthermore suspected that they conspired to rob one of the shops and they now also face a charge of conspiring to commit an armed robbery. Both suspects will appear in the Vanderbijlpark Magistrates Court today,” Steyn concluded. Last week the Vanderbijlpark SAPS also launched the offici-

VANDERBIJLPARK. - The driver of a white Hyundai bakkie died on the scene after a head-on collision with a motorcycle. The fatal accident occurred recently at about 10:00 at the T-junction of Louis Trichard Boulevard and Beefwood Street. The Hyundai bakkie belongs to Maranatha Garden Services. According to a police officer, the bakkie turned right when the motorcyclist had right of way, which resulted in the collision. The driver of the motorcycle crashed through the windscreen of the bakkie and rammed headfirst into the driver. The driver also hit his head against the steering wheel. ER24 paramedics arrived shortly after the accident. The bakkie-driver was declared dead and the motorcyclist was taken to hospital with serious head injuries. The name of the driver of the bakkie was announced as Peter Pelser (61) and that of the motorcyclist as Rian van Vuuren (34). The other four workers of the garden service were treated for minor injuries on the scene. Police are investigating a case of reckless and negligent driving.

safety tips for the festive season The festive season is fast approaching and we are left with many decisions and preparations to make before packing our bags and making our way to our holiday destinations. Some of these preparations include: preparing your house for the period you will be away, checking your vehicle before you hit the road, planning your route, rest periods and also your behaviour on the road. Below are some tips to assist you with the planning and preparation for your well deserved break this festive season.

is your home safe and secure during the festive season? Ensuring the security of family and property is a key priority at this time of the year. !

!

Advise your security company if you are going away and ensure that you supply all the necessary information regarding an alternate contact, in the case of an emergency Inform your neighbours of your holiday plans so that they can keep an eye on your property

!

! ! !

Stop all newspaper deliveries and ask a friend or neighbour to collect your post. A bulging post box is a dead giveaway that you are not at home If hiring a house sitter, ensure that you teach them how to use your alarm correctly Double check that you have locked and secured all windows and doors before leaving home Never leave a key in the inside of an outer door which has glass panels or glass near the door lock

! ! ! !

Sliding doors can be secured simply by placing a piece of timber cut to size in the sliding rail. Do not leave tools like ladders or spades outside, as they may be used to break into your house Clear signage indicating that your home is being monitored by security also helps to discourage burglars Be discreet about your holiday plans – do not announce your holiday plans on social media

is your vehicle in gear for the festive season?

are you ready to have a safe journey on the road?

Before you hit the road it would be wise to ensure that your vehicle is ready to avoid any nasty surprises along your way.

Whether you will be driving 20 or 200 kilometres during the holiday period, it's never been more important to be aware of the road conditions and be a safe and courteous driver.

Follow this simple checklist to ensure the safety of your vehicle. Check the following: Tyres - a simple tread depth test will tell you if your tyres are wonderful or worn (As a general rule of thumb: make sure the tread depth exceeds 1mm across the entire surface of the tyre for them to be legal) ! Brakes - check pads and discs ! Windscreen - fix repairable chips ! The condition of your windscreen wipers ! Lights; make sure all lights, especially your brake lights, are in good working order ! Battery ! The condition of your spare tyre - tread and tyre pressure ! Shock absorbers ! That you have a warning / breakdown triangle in your boot ! Water and oil level !

Here are a few road safety tips for you and your family: Plan your travel time - plan your trip and accommodate sufficient stops along the route. Leave on time with room to spare so you don't find yourself stressing on the road. ! Make sure your car is in good shape - even if your car is fairly new, make sure to check the essentials before you head out: tyres, brakes, oil levels, coolants, and even windshield wipers can make all the difference between a good trip and one that ends in an accident ! Distractions are prohibited - do not even consider talking on your cell, texting, or otherwise engaging in any distracting activities during your drive. If you must take a call, use a rest stop, or pull over safely away from the road to make or return a call. ! Long travel requires plenty of rest - a good night's sleep the night before you travel is essential! !

From Sasol we wish the community, our employees and service providers all the very best for this festive season and a prosperous 2014.

Remember: If it is not safe, don't do it!

550 0 pprotesters rotesters aarrested rrested Moleboheng Chaha

BOIPATONG. - Boipatong Police ended up arresting more than 50 protesters last week. This happened when senior ex-workers, in alliance with the Vaal Community Assembly, Vaal Environmental Justice Alliance (VEJA), Boycott, Divestment & Sanctions against Isra-

el in South Africa (BDS South Africa), flocked to Cape Gate head offices in Boipatong. The demonstrators were protesting against Cape Gate’s alleged exploitation of workers and support for Apartheid Israel. The last straw for the protesters came when Cape Gate officials allegedly failed to respond to a memoran-

dum that was submitted on the 8th of October 2013. “We are here to demand our money from Cape Gate - that is all we want. We are tired of being sent from one place to another,” stated the ex-employees who claimed that Cape Gate had exploited them by not giving them what was due to them. The workers stated that although they worked hard for the company, their children were now going hungry. Police tried many times to tell workers to

leave the gate they had closed, as its closure was hindering production, but they responded flatly that they would stay there until they received an answer to their demands. “We are now going to arrest everyone as this is now considered to be an illegal gathering. The application stated that the protest would last for two hours and they have run out of time,” said a police officer. Protesters were arrested and held at the Boipatong Police Station and released the next day.

My home destroyed by mob

Lazarus Dithagiso

SEBOKENG. - Two security guards of the Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM) are assigned to guard the house of Councillor Mthuzimele Sikukula. whose house in Sebokeng Hostel was recently attacked by a group of community members. He said there were three children in the house while he had gone out with friends on November 6. He received a message that his house was under attack by the mob at about 21:00. He

and his friends rushed to the scene to be met by about 30 people. “Others were inside the house. The children were crying while the thugs broke and kicked everything they came across. Luckily, some people in the area managed to grab two suspects and punished them severely. The others escaped in the direction of Kwa-Masiza Hostel,” he explained. Cllr Sikukula said the two suspects were hospitalised with serious injuries. He estimates damage to his property to amount to R60 000.

The councillor said he does not know why he was attacked. Some of his friends said the attack resulted from the municipality telling some Masiza residents that they will be moved to new RDP houses at the Golden Garden near the Golden Highway. Not all the residents, especially those who have cattle, sheep and goats, are willing to move. Some apparently have government houses from as far as Kwa Zulu Natal and other provinces. The government said those who do not quali-

fy and opted to remain in Masiza will have to pay rates and taxes. Residents blame people who are against any development in the area that includes Masiza, Sebokeng Hostel and Sebokeng Hospital. Warrant Officer Mzimkulu Mthimkulu said Police are investigating a case of malicious damage to property. No one has been arrested. W/O Mthimkulu could not confirm that two suspects had been hospitalised after being attacked by the community.

SEBOKENG. - Street vendors were seen on Friday, holding placards and singing struggle songs at the municipal offices in Sebokeng. This was after they had closed down Moshoeshoe Road, demanding answers from the Local Economic Development (LED) MMC, Khulu Malindi. This protest proved that the vendors and the municipality had not reached an agreement following the municipality’s bid to remove their informal structures from the roadsides of Sebokeng. Dennis Litabe, chairperson of the recently formed organisation ‘Street Vendor Activists’, says, “The municipality must realise that informal businesses are a large contributing factor to the economy of our country. We as street vendors have narrowed the high unemployment rate, especially in this region where the majority of the youth is unem-

ployed.” Litabe adds that the municipality’s responsibility lies in giving the vendors a solution to their problem and not giving them more problems. “The municipality cannot remove us without giving us anywhere to go. They must first build us these stalls that they are talking about and then proceed to remove our informal structures.” Malindi allegedly gave the vendors until January to remove their informal structures. In an interview with Sedibeng Ster Malindi stated that ELM was not removing the vendors but merely telling them to remove any permanent structure they had built on land that does not belong to them. Protesters have sworn not to let the matter go up until the municipality meets their demands. “We want something concrete on paper because we have noticed that the MMC keeps changing his stories,” they conclude.

VANDERBIJLPARK. - “No flat rates, please, let’s all pay for our services.” Emfuleni Executive Mayor, Councillor Gretha Hlongwane has warned that she will never spare the rod and spoil residents who are not willing to pay for rates and services. Speaking when the Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM) signed a partneship to procure a smart meter-reading system for both electricity and water services with Beijing Fuxing Xiaocheng Electricity Technology Stock Co Limited JV Ole Power System, on December 2, Councillor Hlongwane said the community owes the municipality about R3 billion through lack of payments. “No amounts of the accounts will be scrapped,” she emphasised. “The more you consume, the more you will have to pay, so that we will be able to pay back and keep our strong relationship with Beijing,” said the Mayor. The project will start with demonstrations between March and April. Cllr Hlongwane said the smart

meter will help the municipality reduce water and electricity revenue-losses, provide direct access to metering data, detection of meter-tampering, provision of pre-payment, provide information on system outages and facilitate reduction of load. The project started two years ago with public participation and through the IDP. Municipal Manager Sam Shabalala said all areas are going to be affected. “We are the only municipality in the country to go for both smart metering and electricity. The reason we do this is because people do not want to open their gates for us to take their meter readings. The municipality loses about R2 million per year due to unnecessary damage by the community,” he said. Yi Cheng, Chairperson of the Fuxing Xiaochem, through his interpreter, said the system will automatically conduct readings from the offices. Should any one tamper with a reading, this will be indicated directly from the physical address.

Metal thieves a danger to traffic

Moleboheng Chaha

BOIPATONG. - Scrap metal thieves, popularly known as “Bashemane ba tshepe”, have been at the helm of controversy for having caused major accidents that have claimed people’s lives. Some of the thieves themselves have died tragic deaths during these robberies. These are the guys that stand on different corners and wait for trucks carrying metal. They then clamber onto the trucks and start throwing down the scrap metal left, right and in the middle of the road, where a pedestrian could be walking, or where a vehicle carrying passengers could be passing. It seems that nothing has been done by law enforcement to apprehend these perpetrators as it is very difficult to bring charges against them. Boipatong Police spokesperson, Thembeka Koago states that although these boys cause a lot of accidents, it is often difficult to link them to the accidents or bring any

type of charges against them as they immediately flee the scene. Koago adds that Police were recently deployed to patrol the areas considered to be hotspots for this kind of crime, but these boys always find a way to escape the police. “Metal thieves pose a danger to themselves and even more s to society as a whole. It is very crucial to prevent any more losses due to their actions. The parents of these boys must also warn their kids about the dangers of what they are doing.” “We have made examples of the ones we have caught and we will continue to bring them in as what they are doing is a crime.” Koago concludes. Local talent keeps youth off street

BOPHELONG.- The youth of Bophelong organised an event that was very successful and can be confidently said to have gotten the youth off the street. The event was organised by young people of Bophelong to help local artists from all over Gauteng showcase their work and make themselves known to the community from which they need support. The event was called the “Be Visible Arts and Music Festival” and hosted great talents like Ultimate Breeds, Sebokeng’s Finest, Black Clouds, Smindlos and the Crew, etc. These people showed the community that real talent indeed exists in the Vaal. They also got scholars to celebrate their school passes in a positive way as the event was on Wednesday (December 4) when schools closed. Organisers were grateful to have achieved their goal, which was to give local artists a platform from which to showcase their talents and ‘keep the youth out of the taverns

to which they would otherwise have gone to celebrate.

We also thank everyone who supported the event and, of course, LoveLife’.

Final Shova Kalula Distribution for 2013

MEYERTON. - Midvaal Local Municipality recently made the final distribution for 2013 of the “Shova Kalula” bicycles which they have been issuing to schools during the past year. Shova Kalula is a project headed by the Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport in collaboration with the Gauteng Department of Education and local municipalities. The aim is to address the problems which many students face in getting to school each day, by providing them with bicycles to use as a means of transport. The final batch of 151 bicycles was handed over to Sicelo Secondary School, bringing the total number of bicycles distributed for the year to 371. Whilst most pupils have embraced the spirit of the project and are using the bicycles

as intended, there have been a few unfortunate incidents of parents or other community members utilising the bicycles for personal use. Midvaal MMC for Protection Councillor James Botsoere, has warned that abuse of the bikes will not be tolerated. He said if they find any parents riding bicycles, they will be confiscated. “The project is meant to help the children, and make it easier for them to get an education, so we cannot allow the system to be abused. We have already confiscated bicycles after finding adults riding them, so we appeal to the community to use the bicycles as intended,” he said. After completing training on how to ride, and the rules of the road for cyclists to ensure the students’ safety, they will receive the bikes, along with a helmet, pump and lock.

BOPHELONG. - Tears of joy were seen all over the faces of the disabled and wheelchair-bound citizens when Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Vanderbijlpark Trauma Counselling Empowerment, George Sibanda, distributed six wheelchairs to various houses. Samuel de Beers, the manager of the Bophelong Multi Disability Organisation Centre together with his staff, were overjoyed after they received 4 wheelchairs at ASEDI Multi Purpose Centre on November 27. Sinah Oumaki Fourie (65) has been trapped in a dilapidated wheelchair for the past 4 years after suffering from a stroke. She said the second-hand wheelchair she uses, was bought at a pawnshop. The wheels could not turn properly as they were fastened with wires. With tears rolling down her cheeks, she

said that her predicament is now over as she will be able to attend church. Struggling to talk properly, George Ndlovu (78) said that at least now he will be able to go to the shops and attend local meetings. Sibanda said through the help of the Community Health Workers, they managed to track down disabled people. He said the wheelchairs were donated by the Vanderbijlpark Rotary Club. “I am aware that the demand for wheelchairs is very high. If we receive more from other stakeholders we might be able to visit more people in need,” said Sibanda. ‘It’s heart breaking to see people trapped in broken wheelchairs, while others are paying an exuberant amount to buy them secondhand at a pawnshop. I wish I could manage to donate to all the needy,” he said as he looked at the disabled.

As a part of the prize Ricardo received a grant of R 150 000 and an international business learning trip to Tokyo, Japan, valued at R 100 000. Ricardo said he is overwhelmed by the achievement as it was not really expected. “The programme was really helpful to

our business and also contributed to us diversifying our service offerings,” said the excited Ricardo. He attributes his success to the passion and commitment of his team at SIH. Boipelo Nkadimeng, SAB Manager Enterprise Development, said: “It is a proud moment for SAB to celebrate the strides each of the SAB Kickstart finalists have made as entrepreneurs, as well as the growth their businesses have experienced during this journey.” The SAB Kickstart programme is focused on developing and supporting sustainable youth-owned business and high impact entrepreneurs who are able to make a contribution to SA’s job creation needs. Ricardo mentions that he is grateful to SAB Kickstart for the commitment they have shown to entrepreneur-development in the country as well as the personal commitment shown to his company in developing much needed artisan skills for the country. Ricardo can be contacted at info@sihtraining.co.za or 072 036 0450 for further information.

A Poem to Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela

Never and never again! 9R_Na\ @R_R_\ The past week has seen the entire world in a somber mood following the passing of the great man who was Nelson Rolihlahla ‘Tata, Madiba’ Mandela. Many of us know the story behind this icon and what we should remember is what he taught us as a country. Madiba taught us to forgive, no matter what the circumstances; he said that not only is it good for the soul, but you end up free as well. He taught us to accept all people from different walks of life, because the skin colour might be different, but everything else is the same; to stand up for what we believe in and fight for what is right and, lastly, to be humble and not use power to belittle and mistreat others. In his own words he said, “No one is born hating another person because of the colour of his skin, or his background, or his religion. People learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite.” When I pause and literally turn and look back into our past history at this

13

momentous juncture of South African history, one is just amazed at how Madiba has conferred a magic of humanity that prevails to this day. It has not only captivated South Africa, but the entire human universe. Now that he is experiencing an afterlife, I believe all of us here owe ourselves a fraction of wisdom to live and lead our lives like the life of selflessness and dedication to goodness of human spirit ‘TATA’ dedicated his whole life to. Upon facing the death penalty Madiba said, “During my lifetime I have dedicated myself to this struggle of the African people. “I have fought against white domination, and I have fought against black domination. “I have cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society in which all persons live together in harmony with equal opportunities. “It is an ideal which I hope to live for and to see realised. “But if needs be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die.” It is truly and indeed an ideal he died for. Thanks to you and your comrades for fighting for freedom. It has allowed my generation to explore and experience the endless opportunities available today. May we draw from the peace, humility and spirit of forgiveness which you epitomised. Lala ngoxolo Tamkhulu, wena Madiba Dhalibunga. Lerato...

Memories of Mandela Moments Yunus Chamda

As the nation mourns the passing of Madiba, and many are reflecting on the life and times of Nelson Mandela. I too have quietly retreated to reflect and recall the great man. I was fortunate to have been a mayor during his presidency. One of the overriding themes of his term in office was reconciliation, and I endeavoured to promote that as best as I could during my term as mayor of the Lekoa-Vaal Metro. We often met at government events and many social and political occasions. I have several outstanding memories of encounters with Madiba, all of them for very special reasons. The immense contribution that Madiba made in achieving and shaping the nature of South Africa’s political transition is well documented. The historical

and global impact is chronicled in great detail by many experts in their fields. On 10 December 1996, when Mandela came to sign the Constitution in Sharpeville, he was in a buoyant mood. It was indeed a memorable occasion. He was chirping with the ladies in the mayor’s parlour in Vereeniging, as only Madiba could, full of wit and humour. Then at the Sharpeville Stadium he read his prepared speech, but at the end tossed it aside and decided to deliver a speech from the heart. Once gain he urged reconciliation and cooperation between races. On 25 May 1999, he came to Vaal to receive the ‘Freedom of the Vaal’ at Kwa-Masiza Stadium. He was more royalty than statesman. He was more a king than a president. I have it on good authority that in the company of

kings and queens, he addressed them as his equals. These are but a few of many reflections. I hope that in some way, it reminds us of the Mandela legacy and what it meant in real, tangible terms. (This is an edited version of current Sedibeng District Municipality Manager and former Lekoa-Vaal Metro Mayor, Yunus Chamda’s edited letter on Nelson Mandela) Right: South Africa and the world mourn the death of Madiba. Many of those who have met him through the years remember him with fondness. Yunus Chamda, Munic ipal Manager of the Sedibeng District Mu nicipality, is one of the lucky ones who was privileged to spend quite a number of ‘magical’ moments in the presence of this legendary statesman.

A hero to remember Moleboheng Chaha

SEBOKENG. - “To me Nelson Mandela is not dead, for his spirit will forever live in every single one of us.” These were the words of Emfuleni Local Municipality Mayor Greta Hlongwane on Monday, when the ANC Sedibeng region held a commemoration for the iconic hero. The Saul Tsotesi Sports Centre was alive with song as ANC members along with the community at large came together to celebrate Mandela who has left South Africans with a legacy of unity and democracy. Hlongwane added that Mandela’s death was the rebirth of the ANC. “We as the members of the party must stand together and defend our government. “We must also ensure that we carry on the legacy that ‘Utata’ has left for us,” She says. South African National Civic Organisation (SANCO) representative Mandla Mazibuko said, “To best sum up Tata Madiba is to say he was an accomplished revolutionary in the fullest sense of the word. He did everything to change the world in order to leave a better place.” Mazibuko added that Mandela was an embodiment of qualities that are rarely found in one person. “Tata was a fearless freedom fighter, astute statesmen, a problem solver and skilful negotiator,” Mazibuko concluded.

ELM Mayor Greta Hlongwane stated that it was not the end as the spirit of former president Nelson Mandela would forever live inside each and every South African. Photo: Moleboheng Chaha.

Tata was ‘Jesus of Africa’ Sono

Zacharia Nale

SEDIBENG. - Arguably South Africa’s greatest soccer player Jomo Sono has described the late Nelson Mandela as equal to the great biblical prophets. The former statesman passed away last week and the country came to a standstill. “I know some will consider this as profane but it’s my honest opinion. This man was Africa’s Jesus Christ,” said Sono of the late Tata Mandela. The former Orlando Pirates striker, popularly known as Trouble Maker during his

heyday, said Mandela might have been born of an ordinary human being but God sent this man to free the African continent from bondage. “He did what Moses did for the Sons of Israel when he led them from Egyptian slavery. What Mandela did was a miracle. He was like those great biblical prophets.“I feel blessed and a sense of fulfilment for having lived during the time of this extraordinary man. I shared a few breakfasts, lunches and dinners with him. This is a privilege enjoyed by the ‘chosen few’ and I am glad I was one of those few.”

Jomo Sono pays tribute to the fallen giant Nelson Mandela.

Sono said that - unknown to most South Africans - Madiba and the current SAFA President Dr Danny Jordaan had appointed him to be the national team coach in 2002 during the World Cup in Korea and Japan. Sono, who is also Jomo Cosmos coach/manager, is one of the few soccer icons who had the opportunity to meet this fallen giant on many occasions. It was, of course, Mandela who signed the South African constitution in Sharpeville’s George Thabe Stadium in 1996.

Important Mandela Quotes •“I detest racialism, because I regard it as a barbaric thing, whether it comes from a black man or a white man.” •“I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear.” •“If you want to make peace with your enemy, you have to work with your enemy. Then he becomes your partner.” •“There is no easy walk to freedom anywhere, and many of us will have to pass through the valley of the shadow of death again and again before we reach the mountaintop of our desires.” •“If there are dreams about a beautiful South Africa, there are also roads that lead to their goal. Two of these roads could be named Goodness and Forgiveness.” •“Let there be work, bread, water and salt for all.” •“Does anybody really think that they didn’t get what they had because they didn’t have the talent or the strength or the endurance or the commitment?

Vaal University of Technology Your world to a better future

ON THE PASSING AWAY OF FORMER PRESIDENT NELSON ROLIHLAHLA MANDELA The community of the Vaal University of Technology is saddened by the passing away of former President Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela on 5 December 2013 at the ripe age of 95. We join the world in celebrating the life and times of our former President and the gift that he has been for our country and for the world. There are not enough words to express our gratitude to Madiba and the legacy that he has left for our country. We pray that his soul may rest in peace and that God’s light will shine on him forever. For the community of the Vaal University of Technology, the passing on of Madiba is as painful as it is to his family, friends and compatriots, for our records show that he once walked through the corridors of our institution after he was elected the first President of the democratic Republic of South Africa. The photograph he took at the time will always be treasured by the University and will remain a memento to live up to his dream and expectations of a united, non-racist and prosperous South Africa for all. Our condolences go to his family, his clan, the African National Congress, all South Africans and all citizens of the world. TRIBUTE We salute Madiba for having restored the dignity of all oppressed peoples in the world. South Africa has shed its pariah status because Madiba embraced equality, equity, human dignity and diversity. Aah DALIBHUNGA!

VUT News VUT CONTINUES TO BUILD ON THE HERITAGE OF THE VAAL

VUT’S SPORTS STARS ANNOUNCED AT AWARDS EVENT

S

teeped deep in history, the Sedibeng district bears rich heritage of political and historical significance. The area still has significant scars that remain pillars of the new South Africa. The area was also the scene of a wave of political upheavals in the mideighties, followed by the rent boycotts organised by the Vaal Civic Organisation. By the end of the instability, more than 150 people had been killed. The people of Sedibeng say more can be done to recognise the region’s sacrifice, especially on the 21st March 1960, during the Anti-Pass demonstrations, police opened fire, 69 people were killed and 180 wounded in Sharpeville. This brought about the Sharpeville Massacre. In Boipatong in 1992, 46 township residents were killed after being attacked by hostel dwellers. Due to the rapid growth, it was recently announced that the Sedibeng District Municipality will become the third Metro in the Gauteng Province. The Vaal University of Technology, being the only contact university in the area, serves the educational needs of the

region. Besides the four multi-disciplined faculties at the Main Vanderbijlpark campus and three other Sites of Delivery at Daveyton, Secunda and Upington, we have extended our services to the newly established VUT Southern Gauteng Science and Technology Park, in conjunction with the Southern Gauteng Regional Innovation Forum at our Sebokeng campus. Using the latest state-of-the-art, cuttingedge technology, designs that have been developed by VUT have already been patented. The aim of the Science Park is to contribute to the creation of jobs and social and economic benefits. The Science Park holds promise to the current and future thought leaders, knowledge generators and problem solvers who can and must assist in solving our socio-economic problems. It also bears an important catalyst in creating further interest in science and technology and the socio-economic benefits it can offer society. Having established links with local government agencies, industry and business, VUT is poised to be the vital link for economic prosperity and growth within the region.

Prosecutor feeds community Lazarus Dithagiso

BARRAGE. - “Thank you very much, Retha Venter, from the bottom of our hearts,” said the rural community of Barrage Smallholdings after they received food parcels from the Vanderbijlpark senior prosecutor. Venter was accompanied by Ellen Lekgetho and Brenda Dangalazana, regional and district prosecutor respectively. The community was invited through the office of station commander Lieutenant Colonel Augustine Malebo. Families left the station laden with parcels. They said this was a big surprise ahead of Christmas. “We were not aware when we were invited that we would end up leaving the station with big smiles on our faces,” said one of the women. According to Venter, the food was bought through money collected from community members who have committed themselves to act against crime: “Instead of sending felons to jail, depending on their crime, we presented the option to pay a fine. The money will be used to buy groceries.” Prosecutor Venter said they would roll out the project to feed the children in Boipatong a day before Christmas: “The intention next year is to buy school uniforms for needy children in the areas.” Venter was joined by Gert van Vuuren, chairperson of the Community Policing Forum in Barrage

The Vaal River Soccer League takes a big stride

Schalk le Roux

SASOLBURG. - The Vaal River Soccer League was a huge success with all the powerhouses from previous seasons changing positions recently. The schools gave some excellent performances with some really exciting football being played by the likes of Phoenix, Suiderlig, Sasolburg High and Carel De Wet. Adidas and Toyota Sasolburg partook in this day providing an excellent platform with the sponsoring of the Ladies Trophies (Toyota). The various age groups performed well and the usual suspects for the ladies were General Smuts vs Suiderlig in the Final. The Suiderlig squad performed very well and took the Final with a 3 -0 win over General Smuts. The u/15 s had a high-flying Phoenix High School meet with Carel De Wets u/15. It was a tight affair and the showpiece was defending from both

sides. With a tense encounter all it needed was a goal. That goal eventually came in the second half of the match for Carel De Wet. Carel De Wet held on to the lead to win the final 1 - 0. The u/17 final was a really exciting game as General Smuts, powerhouse of the Vaal River Soccer League, clashed with a first-time finalist - Sasolburg High School. General Smuts had a man sent off for a deliberate hand ball which foiled a goal-scoring opportunity. Sasol High slotted home the penalty and then took control. Not to be counted out, General Smuts came at Sasolburg High School but could not make enough of clear-cut opportunities. Sasolburg High School then created some Spectacular opportunities and finished the game off. The final score was 5 - 2 with some outstanding

performances. The u/20 match up was between two powerhouses Carel De wet and Suiderlig. The Game was tight with Suiderlig playing the more attractive football. Defensively sound Carel De Wet needed something extraordinary from their Captain to take the lead. A twenty-yard stunner which could make any footballer drop their jaws was the highlight 20 minutes into the final. He was at it again with another opportunity which was saved brilliantly. The game finished 3 -

0 with Carel De Wet being crowned the senior Champions. The new season starts in April 2014 and we want to include all primary schools from the ages of u/7 year olds to u/13s. The aim is to finalise and prepare for a meeting before the end of the year and we would like all schools to join us in creating something special for the future leagues. Vaal River Soccer League falls under VYFD which in full is Vaal Youth Football Development.

SHOOTING FROM THE HIP With Zacharia Nale

A lot has been said and written about the death of late statesman Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela. This is the very same man who played a significant role in bringing the 2010 World Cup to Africa for the first time when South Africa hosted this world showpiece. I thought I was going to run on about the success of the Safa Sedibeng teams, but I decided to join the millions of South Africans who pay homage to this great man. There is no word to describe him except EXCELLENCE. Many of us have learned what forgiveness means because of the humiliation this man was able to assimilate. The outstanding moment that Shooting From The Hip remembers about Tata was when South Africa was granted the opportu-

It is not as if I’m arrogant nity to host the 2010 Fifa World Cup. It was his emotional speech that the world fell in love with at South Africa FIFA Headquarters. This is the moment I will never forget in my entire life. How can one forget the 1996 African Cup of Nations? The Madiba Magic! The man was more popular in sports than in politics, taking into consideration the role he played for our national team to conquer the world. Tata Madiba played a part in the transformation of sports in this country and one can’t just ignore that. Shooting From The Hip just wonders what this country would be like if we hadn’t had such a great leader as Tata Madiba. He inspired most of us, especially those who had no hope for the future. I’m grateful for who I am because of this man, because he indirectly played a role in my life. Today I can face the world without

Coach “Benza” on way back to VUT FC? Zacharia Nale

VANDERBIJLPARK. - News travels fast! Sedibeng Ster Sports has learned that Tebello “Benza” Kheswa could be back as head coach of the VUT FC. The news reaching Sedibeng Ster Sport is that VUT will part ways with current head coach Geelbooi ‘Goma’ Masango after this former Vaal Professional defender spent two seasons with the institution’s soccer team. According to a source close to this development, Kheswa tops the list of favourite candidates, taking into consideration what he achieved while he was still VUT Development FC coach two years ago. He left VUT under a cloud after he was told by the VUT Sports Department that the institution had done away with development teams. He won the Super League for three consecutive seasons while he was still at VUT. His achievements were enough to convince VUT management to recall this talented coach from Tshepiso, Sharpeville. To add more feathers to his cap, Kheswa also helped the institution’s soccer team reach the finals of the USSA, which hosted VUT. His CV speaks for itself although he remains humble and down-toearth. To date, after he was “shown the door”, Kheswa went back to his original team

23

Tshepiso Barcelona FC before he joined forces with Vaal Milano FC. He helped the club finish in a respectable position on the Safa Sedibeng SAB League’s log last season. Despite being a student of this beautiful game, Kheswa has proven beyond doubt that he has a great future ahead of him as far as coaching is concerned. When approached for comment Kheswa said he had no idea that he was a redhot favourite candidate for VUT FC. Sedibeng Ster Sports has it on good authority that VUT students are the ones that suggested to management that Kheswa be called back. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sports a student who did not want to be named, said: “The management must swallow their pride and recall Kheswa because the man has achieved more than some of the coaches they hired in the past. Kheswa himself says: “I had some good times there and everyone was good to me, but unfortunately I was told that they had gotten rid of development teams and I had no choice but to leave. I was doing well there and the results were there for everyone to see,” says Kheswa. However, Kheswa did not dismiss any possibility of going back to VUT though he told Sedibeng Ster Sports that he is committed to Vaal Milano FC.

fear. My pride has nothing to do with arrogance or achievement but the confidence the man instilled in me – FEAR NOT! For too long, fear has prevented some of us from taking risks in life. The Bafana Bafana Class of ‘96 can attest to this - how to conquer fear when they were crowned the African Cup Champions. Self belief! Don’t forget – this is the man who spent 27 years in prison, yet came out and became president. He has run the race and it is now entirely up to us to finish it. But we can’t do this as long as our hearts are dominated by fear.

The reason most of us don’t succeed in life is because we want to be ‘people pleasers’ but this was not the case with the old man. We will never realise our dreams if we are ‘people pleasers’, which is the greatest challenge in our football leadership. You ask yourself - “Am I reading Shooting From The Hip or the TD Jakes book?” But yes, this is your favourite weekly column ‘Shooting From The Hip.’ Robala ka kgotso Tata. You have run the race and it is up to us to finish it.On a lighter note, Shooting From The Hip wishes to thank Safa Sedibeng for appointing Yours Truly to the regional u/15 team.

Safa Sedibeng u/15 brought silver medal home

Zacharia Nale

SEDIBENG. - Safa Sedibeng u/15 boys brought home a silver medal after finishing in second position at the Safa Legacy Trust Junior Provincial Tournament held at Eldora-

do Park Stadium on Saturday. The spirited u/15 boys lost 4 - 3 to Safa Johannesburg in an entertaining final. It was end-to-end stuff with Safa Sedibeng looking to be the better side of the day. Team coach Tebello Kheswa

says the team made Sedibeng proud by the character they showed in the field of play. In other games that formed part of this tournament, Safa Sedibeng u/13 boys finished in third place, while the u/13 girls and u/15s fi-

nished in fourth position. Safa Sedibeng was full of compliments for the coaches and managers who prepared these teams. The organisation believes that these boys and girls represented Sedibeng with pride and dignity.

Nkumane lauds admin workshop

Zacharia Nale

SEBOKENG. - Former Bafana Bafana team manager Sipho Nkumane hailed as a vibrant success the workshop held at Imphahlolle Primary School in Zone 14. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sports, Nkumane says the turn-out was positive with team managers, coaches and administrators coming in numbers. The workshop was organi-

sed by Emfuleni Local Footbal Association (ELFA) chairman Philip Ndlovu to empower teams’ managers and administrators by telling them how to run their day-to-day club affairs. Good news for those who could not attend the workshop is that Nkumane says he will organise another workshop to promote continuity. He thanks all the teams who sent their representatives to the workshop. “I was

encouraged by the teams’ interest in this workshop and we will be organising a followup workshop to give those who were not here a chance. I really want to thank all the people who contributed to the success of the workshop, especially the ELFA. There is a serious need for this kind of workshop for the clubs to improve their administration,’ says Nkumane. His sentiments were echoed by Ndlovu

who believes the workshop was an eye-opener for teams that wanted to know how to run their clubs’ affairs. ‘I wish to thank Mr Nkumane for volunteering to conduct the workshop. We need people like him in football who will serve football without demanding to be paid. We intend to organise a follow-up workshop early next year as part of continuity,’ he concludes.
