Sedibeng District East tops at 90,7%
Mduduzi Mathebula
SEBOKENG. – Sedibeng East topped at District level by clinching a 90.7% matric pass rate. Since 1994, the nation has celebrated a 23% increase of matric passes, which means that it has now nailed a 78% national pass rate. Gauteng received bronze at provincial level with 87%. Sedibeng Ster spoke to some jubilant matriculants who established that they had passed their matric on Tuesday morning. Gladys Mogale from Zone 14, a matriculant of Botebo-Tsebo Secondary School says that she was nervous but she knew she had passed. Mogale was accompanied by her friends, who are past matriculants. They are Tsholofelo Rakoma, a second-year VUT student, and Karabo Maele from Jeepe College. “I got a B pass, I’m proud of myself. I worked hard,” says Mogale. Beauty Mogoru from Botebo-Tsebo also passed with a C and she was amongst those learners whose hard work has prevailed. On the other hand Nomonde Mvundlela says she is content to have overcome her fear by passing. Past
matriculant Rakoma says it feels like yesterday. “I’m very happy for my friends. Now the real challenges of tertiary learning are on. They will have to work harder than they did in matric to fulfil their dreams,” says Rakoma. Meanwhile National Education, Health and Allied Workers Union (NEHAWU) Sedibeng congratulated all the matriculants that have made it. Stone Liphoko, NEHAWU Sedibeng regional secretary, says, “ NEHAWU congratulates all Grade 12 students who successfully passed their matric examinations for the year 2013 and also encourages all those who did not succeed this time to not give up hope but to try again. We salute all stakeholders, who have worked hard to achieve a matric pass rate of 78, 2%, that represents a 4, 3% increase from the 73, 9% attained in 2012. These results are a positive step in the right direction but we call on all stakeholders to focus on the qualitative outcomes going forward. We also congratulate our own Sedibeng District East for being the best performing District across the country in the 2013 matric performance.”

PROF KHAN / MAMA AYO Enemies Came To Confess to Me
After many years of unhappy marriage, living in pain everyday. Pastors were praying for me but no difference. Another day I heard from Radio & in news papers that there is a professor, who helped my friend’s son, he was addicted to drugs, I started to attend to him, he checks by using water in a bowl and mirror. After only one week my enemies came to me to confess, is when I saw my husband’s girlfriend in the mirror. I can thank the professor by telling people about his good job.

accompanied to their homes by old women who also made this journey when they were young. Sedibeng Ster was not permitted to interview the three girls, but was allowed to capture the moments of jubilation and laughter as parents joyously welcomed their children back home. Tselane Mokatsane, Poppy Sake and Mantoa Namane made important commitments on Saturday when they came out after four weeks of intensive training and learning. The trio made bare-footed rounds in the area, their bodies covered in red clay, while the community members screamed with jubilation and pride. Johan Modise, a community member, says it is a breathtaking moment to see these girls following their culture with pride and without any sort of fight or commotion. “It is a father’s pride to have his daughter initiated according to BaSotho culture. Completing the course is not child’s play but it is heart-warming for the parents. No fights or murder cases are reported with the girls while boys are just on a different level. “We still hold up our dignity as girls to continue with our culture as we were taught. When they reach a certain stage, young girls are taught respect and humanity which is part of our African culture,” says Traditional Surgeon Ausi Makgwe. Happy New Year! - as we welcome you to this New Year, 2014. Never before have I been one to believe in making New Year’s pledges and I do not intend to start now but I believe that even so we have got to make changes. We once again welcome a new year that brings with it a message of hope. A dawning of a brand new chapter in our lives that shows us that it’s okay to let go of the past
and start again. It’s a reset button. It’s an opportunity to reinvent ourselves but only if we have the strength to keep moving forward. It’s one thing to sit down and create a long list of New Year’s resolutions, and it’s another to have the self-discipline to follow through with them. Embracing the unknown and tackling something new can be very daunting, but change is very beneficial for one’s personal and professional life. For some, change is exciting, but for others, it can be extremely unsettling and many aren’t capable of adapting to new situations. We have to make changes and get rid of the burden of the past so that
we enter the New Year as changed souls. In the New Year there’s absolutely nothing you can’t achieve. All you need is will, drive, determination, hard work, patience, incredible courage and a lot of faith. So in 2014, don’t hold grudges, forgive people who have offended you, don’t hate. Please don’t pay attention to what people say about you because their mouths belong to them and they can say whatever they want. Just never let it get to you or define you. Never ever give anyone the power to make you despise yourself. Allow youself space to make mistakes so that you can grow and learn from them and never become afraid
because you are unique. Those that achieved the dreams that they set out for in 2013, Good Luck, and those that didn’t, this is not the end of the world. Stand up, dust yourself off and continue with the journey. It’s time for us as a people to start making some changes. Let’s change the way we live and let’s change the way we treat each other. May love, money, peace and health come in abundance in 2014. ‘You will never reach your destination if you stop and throw stones at every dog that barks at you’. Winston Churchill Lerato...
Shopping arcade set for major revamps Lerato Serero
SEBOKENG.- The Zone 14 shopping precinct is set for a huge overhaul to the tune of approximately R15-million. This was announced during the festive season by acting Sedibeng District Municipal Mayor Johnny Tsotetsi together with Emfuleni Local Municipal (ELM) acting Mayor Sello Pitso at the sod-turning event on Reconciliation Day. The long-neglected precinct will be turned into a multipurpose centre and a cultural precinct with a community clinic, stalls for business, a historical monument and a theatre for arts and culture. Around 200 people are expected to be employed on the project. “With this project we are aiming at reviving this precinct so that our people can have a well developed place where they can hold their community activities with ease,” said Tsotetsi.
“We are a government that is working for you. When you tell us what you need, we will provide. “Together with the provincial department we are going forward with this project that you our people requested,” said Pitso when thanking those who were in attendance. The revival of the precinct is also aimed at attracting tourists to the township and the building process at the old Eldorado Cinema has already started in earnest.

Festive filth still uncollected Moleboheng Chaha
SEBOKENG. - Some areas of the Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM) remained filthy over the festive season. This is after Waste Department labourers launched a strike that hit the Waste Removal function all over Emfuleni. Workers were allegedly protesting for overtime and proper work uniforms. To date, 149 workers have been fired from ELM’s payroll. Appalled residents even resorted to dumping waste in vacant areas and on open veld, a desperate measure that could cause a health hazard for themselves and more so for young kids. Even sports stadiums became informal dumps. Even in the new year, it seems the problem has not been resolved as some areas are still sitting with rubbish from last year in their yards. ELM Communications head Stanley Gaba says: “At this point ELM has not hired any new employees. We did hire a contractor on a temporary basis to deal with the waste that has accumulated since the commencent of the strike.” Gaba sends his apologies on behalf of ELM for failure to remove the rubbish over the holidays. “We would like to apologise to the community at large for not being able to give them the service of
removing their waste. This is a problem that was caused by the illegal strike but we have taken steps to ensure that we give them the best service.” Gaba adds that people should not feel that the municipality has replaced workers with contractors. “The contractor has been hired to help with the backlog. Once this has been accomplished we can then deal with the matter of hiring new staff.” Gaba concluded.
