Consumers stand by fire
Mduduzi Mathebula
SEBOKENG. - Shoppers were forced to rush out of a flaming building on Sunday morning when Roots Store at the Thabong Shopping Centre erupted into violent flames. Smoke clouded the place and shoppers were left wondering what had happened. The Fire Department was deployed to the scene just in time to thwart total devestation. Police were also at the scene and made efforts to calm the situation down. Consumers were asked to stand about 500
metres away from the store in order for Fire Rescue personnel to deal with it. No injuries were reported. All Roots staff were out of the store in time, according to fire fighters. The fire apparently started at the back of the store in the storage area and burned its way through the roof, however, the deployment of Fire Rescue came in handy to prevent the fire from spreading to other stores. Centre manager Lovemore Moremi says the situation was bad and unfortunate. “We are pleased there were no injuries during the
evacuation. However, Roots Store will be out of service for at least a month, while two other affected stores are going to operate normally. We apologise to our consumers for the inconvenience,” says Moremi, indicating that some things are beyond their control. When asked what could have caused the fire, Moremi said this was still being investigated, but it might have been an electrical fault. “We thank Fire Rescue for its quick response and control of the situation,” he ends.

Police officer’s house burned Mduduzi Mathebula
EVATON. - The home of a Mafatsane police officer was set on fire on Tuesday after an angry community showed their fury over the murder allegedly committed by him. Apparently the community reacted to the murder that occurred last Sunday when the police officer opened fire on two young men who were believed to have been planning to hijack the officer. According to a police officer the two young men tried to attack him. Hell broke loose when the officer opened fire and killed one of the suspects. The other suspect fled and has not been seen to this day. Spokesperson Constable Tshifiwa Mitileni confirms that this suspect is still at large. “We are still looking
for the second suspect who is still at large. Police are investigating two cases, a murder case and arson. It is not advisable for the community to react to hearsay. We totally condemn mob justice,”said Mitileni. The angry mob crowded near the house of the officer on Sunday and set it on fire. Mitileni says they arrested two people for arson. The station management has approached the family of the deceased who was buried over the weekend. The officer is also being investigated. Community anger led to vigilante action in which the home of a police officer alleged to have killed a man was set on fire by an angry mob. Photo: Mduduzi Mathebula..
Jealous ex-boyfriend stabs girlfriend to death and wounds new boyfriend Lazarus Dithagiso
BOPHELONG. - A jealous ex-boyfriend is behind bars, his late former lover lies in the government mortuary while another man fights for dear life in hospital. Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Kinnie Steyn says that the late Dieketseng Khoali (28) was in the company of her 30-years-old boyfriend, Petros Bojosi, on the way home from a shebeen. The incident happened when they were confronted by her 42-year-old ex-lover on Saturday at about 23:00. The brutality of the stabbing that took place there has been described by immediate residents as vengeful. It has been alleged that the
suspect was himself earlier stabbed in Sebokeng - this was apparently by a knife wielded by the deceased. He was informed through his friend that they saw Khoali roaming around in the informal squatter camp of Bophelong. Apparently the suspect searched for her until he reached the Tennis Court Squatter Camp, Bophelong, where a well-placed, reliable source who did not want to be named, made some disclosures. The deceased, not aware that they were being followed, left the shebeen. Steyn says that apparently while they were on their way home, the suspect approached them. After exchanging a few words, he pulled out a knife and started to stab

SEBOKENG. - Enoch Tlebere (59) says that his family’s dream to honour to his deceased grandson Serame Tlebere (died 2006) by erecting a tombstone now seems like a far-fetched dream. The family allegedly approached Kagisano Bopanang Funeral Services in 2011, based in Vanderbijlpark, to purchase a tombstone from them. After they allegedly paid R8462.00, the family finds itself asking why their grandson’s tombstone has still not been erected. “We as the Tlebere family are very heartbroken because it seems we took thousands of rands and flushed them down the drain. The company that took our money has now dissapeared into thin air without giving us our money’s worth.”
Tlebere now seeks the help of the community. “I would like to urge any members of the community who have experienced the same type of cruelty at the hands of Kagisano Bopanang Funeral Services to please come forward.” Tlebere states that if more people come forward to tell their story, together they stand a chance of getting their money back. Sedibeng Ster has tried with no luck to contact Kagisano Bopanang Funeral Services. Anyone with information that can help the Tlebere family is asked to contact them on 084 9841368

The woman was reported dead on the scene by paramedics. The suspect, who denied having killed and stabbed the victims, was identified to Police by members of the public. He told Police that he had no relationship with the deceased. He is faced with one count of murder and another of attempted murder. He briefly appeared in the Vanderbijlpark Magistrates Court. The case has been remanded for further investigation.

Mini ‘war’ over community centre
Moleboheng Chaha
SHARPEVILLE. - Sharpeville SAPS Spokesperson Sello Pitso and Ward 22 councillor Sibongile Phume had their hands full when they had to intervene between two people who were fighting for the Tshepiso Community Centre and a furious community had already taken sides.Hlolo Vilakazi, wanted the Centre to be turned into an orphanage, while Lindi Mgwenya and community members were adamant that the Centre should remain a creche as it has been for the past 14 years. Mgwenya, who has been at the helm of the Tshepiso community creche for over 10 years, was shocked to find the building’s interior wrecked beyond recognition. “I was very heartbroken when I discovered that somebody had vandalised the children’s creche. I have since had to seek alternative accommodation for them. Some parents did not even go to work as a result because the place could not accommodate all the kids. As a result some of them have had to stay home with their parents.” says Mgwenya. The Centre, which accomodates more than 100 kids was allegedly vandalised by people who wanted to turn it into an orphanage. Furious community members said that they were not going to allow that to happen, as the community had decided a long time ago that the community centre in Tshepiso would be used as a community creche. “Lindi has been taking care of all of our kids. Now they want to take the creche away from her and turn it into an orphanage. We are not
going to allow that,” the furious community members stated. Community membersstated that it was them that had to take a decision on what would happen to the Centre, and that if all of them wanted the Centre to remain as a
creche, that is how things would remain. “We have already found a sponsor who is going to renovate the creche into even better condition than it was. The kids will soon have their creche back.” they conclude.

I’m still a PAC councillor: Radebe Mduduzi Mathebula
VANDERBIJLPARK. - Sedibeng Ster recently featured an article about two PAC councillors whose removal was demanded by a group of other PAC members in the region. On Thursday one of the two councillors Abel Radebe marched into the newsroom wanting to clear his name and that of his colleague, Apa Pooe. Radebe made it clear that the PAC is divided between its regional and national offices. Apparently the parties national President and the General Secretary are in a dispute that led to the paralysis of the PAC in most areas. “I’m still the councillor. Whatever group wants to destroy me or pull me down have to wait for the courts to decide,” says Radebe with ferocity. He admits that the PAC Sedibeng region is also divided. He says a group wants the General Secretary in power and the other group still believes in the President of the party. He says, “I was told that my membership has expired, by which authority I don’t know.” Moniki Ntsepe, Secretary General of PAYCO, says both Radebe and Pooe are still councillors of the PAC. Above: Abel Radebe strikes back over PAC division that has been going on and says, “I’m still in position.” Photo: Mduduzi Mathebula.

9R_Na\ @R_R_\ Sport and politics have never gone hand in hand, and I for one has never been a fan of politics nor have I been an affiliate of a certain faction, but this past week came the realisation that although politicians are blabbermouths at this point in time our national Sports Minister Fikile Mbalula hit the nail on the head. Mbalula got it spot on when he said that our national soccer team are a ‘bunch of losers’. I agree with him a 101%. The national

team has resorted to being helped to qualify for competitions by virtue of being hosts of tournaments, it happened during the 2010 World Cup and happened with the current CHAN competition, consider also their failure to qualify for the 2014 Brazil World Cup. I adore a person who calls ‘a spade a spade’ and not try to deceive people by calling it something else. If you are a ‘bloody loser’ that is what you are or do you think you deserve to be called a winner or something else along the lines of something or someone who is a success? A lot of people aren’t winners because of fear, propaganda and being totally brainwashed. A person who chooses to be a winner woke up with an idea, thought it might not
work but chose to do it anyway. Now that is a winner not a bunch of cry-babies who decided to come up with apologies and excuses as to why they could not win each time they fail to achieve something. Do you feel you’re living up to YOUR potential? Are you doing your BEST? Do you even know what your best looks like? Worry if the success you desire seems to be eluding you. YES, do worry my friend. It’s not my intention to make you feel bad about yourself. The simple reality of life is that success is an ideal we all love to strive for, but in practice we typically fall far short of our potential. We should continue to strive for the best no matter what. I apologise if you find this disturbing but look around you
and you will realise that everyone is striving for success (winning), everyone wants to buy a big house, buy a new car, get married, find a well paying job and become filthy rich and all that you wish for is failure and mediocrity. If someone does not speak out like Mbalula has spoken the national team will find itself in the same distressing situation in the next 100 years, thereby having become losers that they were meant to be. The administration should wake up and smell the coffee. Mbalula is right, even the Madiba (may his soul rest in peace) magic would not have helped them because they are indeed a bunch of losers. “Protest is the only movement they know”
Mduduzi Mathebla
SEBOKENG. - The Zone 13 community says that local government authorities will only heed its community if havoc is wrought. The angry community closed Moshoeshoe Road on Tuesday. The main road was infested by an angry community who protested so their voices could be heard. “These people know only language - violence,” says a community member, Irvin Warie. The community claims to have asked the local councillor to clean up the illegal dumping site behind the Sebokeng Technical School, where there is now a playground for children. Apparently all their grievances were ignored and the community thought fighting would be the best way to protest. This included closing
roads. According to the community, children were playing around the dump site recently when they found a foetus. “It was horrible and unbelievable for children to see something like this due to illegal dumping,” said Warie. Apparently all their efforts to clean the dump site and turn it into a playground proved fruitless. However, municipal trucks were seen by Sedibeng Ster cleaning the site five days after the protest. “We were aware of the protest and community issues which were not followed up with the right procedures. However, we have cleaned the site. It turns out to have been the issue of a contractor that left the site unclean, leading to illegal dumping, the issue has been dealt with,” says Emfuleni Local Municipality Communication Head, Stanley Gaba.

2014 Vaal Mall expansion to enhance retail experience SEDIBENG.- Following seven successful years of being the premier shopping destination of Vanderbijlpark and the Vaal Triangle, Vaal Mall will undergo a substantial 20,000sqm expansion in 2014. Co-owned by Sycom Property Fund and Changing Tides, a Flanagan & Gerard Property Investment company, the R450 million project will see the centre expand from its present 50,000sqm to 70,000sqm. The anticipated start date is 1 February 2014, and the expansion will include upgrades to the existing mall, ensuring a consistent, fresh and modern look and feel throughout the centre. David Falck of Sycom Property Fund explains: “Vaal Mall has been a flagship in the Sycom portfolio. This expansion will ensure that it remains the preferred and most dominant shopping centre destination in the greater Vaal area.” Vaal Mall remains a popular choice for shoppers and retailers alike, and demand for space has risen steadily since the mall’s opening in 2006. Paul Gerard of Flanagan & Gerard Property Investment says: “The demand for retail space within Vaal Mall has been exceptional, with so many national retailers jumping at the chance to expand. This enables us to be selective with new tenants and amplify the retail mix with shops that are an excellent match for Vaal
Mall’s customers.” Besides greater shopping variety, customers will also enjoy the convenience of a mezzanine parking level as well as rooftop parking.Jacques Mizen of Acucap Management Services, general manager of Vaal Mall, says that feedback from the mall’s valued and loyal shoppers over the years also served as an indication that the time was right to expand. “There is no doubt we’re on the
right track with the expansion and upgrade. It will offer bigger and better stores, a strong entertainment component consisting of cinemas and children’s entertainment, more variety to create an even better shopping experience, added upmarket fashion stores, a more comfortable shopping experience, plenty of covered parking and a few extra surprises.”
The Vaal Mall as it stands now, the Mall is to be refurbished this year.

stream polyethylene facilities. The plant was designed to reduce hydrocarbon flaring, which reduces the carbon footprint of Sasol’s total ethylene production capacity in South Africa. Constable says,“Through the installation of the new ethylene splitter, considerable production capacity has been freed up to produce more ethylene. In so doing, our investment in EPU5, together with a new compressor unit in Secunda, will provide the South African plastics manufacturing industry with an additional 47 000 tons of polyethylene annually.” EPU5 is already in operation. The plant is expected to reach full capacity by 2017. “The South African plastics industry is a significant contributor to the national economy. Local demand for polyethylene polymers continues to grow annually. With a rise in new plant capacities and the need to be globally competitive, we recognised the necessity to expand both polymer and ethylene production,” said Marinus Sieberhagen, managing director: Sasol Polymers.

Artists tired of workshops and plead for action Mduduzi Mathebula
VANDERBIJLPARK. - The Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM)) Arts and Culture Summit held over two days - Friday and Saturday - at the Mayor’s Parlour. The two-day event was packed by all including celebraties and artists from indigenous cultures. The main purpose was to have artists under one roof and lectured about the industry. However, heads rolled when Sports, Arts and Culture and Recreation Manager Ben Manzi allowed the artists to ask a string of questions. Their questions embraced that they are tired of being treated as upcoming amateurs and non-professionals while the local government does not take them seriously. “We are professionals. Some of us have more than passion about art, we have allocated further education to it. We are tired of not being motivated and supported. When action needs to be implemented nothing seems to take place,” says Thabang Molibeli, a local film producer. There were also grievances about the deployment of unethical people who run local halls and theatres. MMC of Sports, Arts, Culture and Recreation Shaka Radebe tried to calm the artists down but the artists were fuming with anger. There were prominent arts the like of Shane Maja, Josias Moleele , Desmond Mthebu and a host of others from various organisations to teach artist about the does and dont’s on the industry. Maja specifically said arts needs to be more creative in order to be taken serious. “We are the point of attraction and the voice of the community. We can elaborate issues in art form. We should not allow people or government/politicians to use us when they want something and after they get it they forget about us,” says Maja. It was a very informative event that allowed artists to interact on business frame. Moleele says there is a lot that needs to be changed as far as artists and professionalism is concerned.

Gauteng schools ready for 2014
Lerato Serero
SEDIBENG.- Gauteng schools are ready for 2014, with learning and teaching off to a flying start last Wednesday. Gauteng Education MEC Barbara Creecy says that says that preparations for the coming academic year started in April last year, when the Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) brought its admissions process forward to make sure that every school and every learner in the Province had sufficient time to avoid any last minute rush for enrolments.
“Starting with the admissions process early helps the Department plan better for infrastructure, learner and teacher support materials, teacher recruitment, nutrition, scholar transport, and other support programs”, MEC Creecy said. GDE schools have received 131 000 applications for Grade 1 and 114 546 applications for Grade 8 for 2014. The majority have already been placed in schools, among them the 24 new schools the GDE takes into service in January 2014. A further four schools will be opened in

April, bringing the total number of new learning facilities in Gauteng for 2014 to 28. As part of the Department’s annual schools readiness campaign, GDE officials visited schools across the Province to check on preparations for 2014, and to ensure that teaching and learning can get underway without major challenges on the first day of the academic year. During the readiness campaign, over 2000 schools were visited by district officials and senior departmental managers. School visits checked on learner admissions, textbook orders and deliveries, academic preparedness, and staffing for the
new school year. “All Gauteng schools have placed orders for the textbooks they need for 2014, and we are currently monitoring delivery and top up orders, particularly for those schools that require the Department’s direct assistance to purchase the new CAPS textbooks for grades 7, 8, 9 and 12,” Creecy says. As part of the early preparations process, 99 posts for school principals, vacant as the result of retirements and resignations, have been advertised and the recruitment process is underway. These positions will be filled by the time school starts.

BARRAGE. - The senior prosecutor of the Vanderbijlpark Magistrates Court Reta Venter said they are concerned about child rape and abuse. ‘It is the responsibility of every citizen to make sure that children are looked after and taken care of,’ she said. Vanderbijlpark Rotary Club assisted with school stationery. Venter was accompanied by her Control Projective Officer Pulesetso Mthupi and Ellen Lekgetho, Court Preparation Officer.
They spoke to the children ahead of the new school year at the Barrage Police Station last Tuesday. About 50 children were dhanded school bags and stationery. They encouraged them to report any criminal activity or suspicious activity at their homes. “Do not allow a strange person or a self-proclaimed good samaritan ‘uncle’ to touch you around the body or give you sweets,’ said Mthupi, whilst demonstrating to the children. The children were allowed to sing and danced with joy.
Back: Petro Bester (Vanderbijlpark Rotary Club), Puseletso Nthupi, (Control Projective Officer), Sergeant Simon Mofokatsana, Phillip Nathnagel (Emfuleni PR Councillor), Constable Anny Mpitsi, Captain Naughty Motaung, Reta Venter (Vanderbijlpark Senior Prosecutor), Ellen Lekhetho (Preparation Prosecutor), handed the school bags to the children at the Barrage Police Station a day before school resumed.

MEC visits Sedibeng schools Moleboheng Chaha
SEDIBENG. - When it comes to the issue of education, a good foundation can almost guarantee a bright future for every child. Gauteng Social Development MEC Nandi Mayathula-Khoza last week visited Sedibeng schools to ensure their smooth running on the first day of re-opening. Mayathula-Khoza was accompanied by Sedibeng District Municipality mayor Simon Mofokeng and Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM) mayor Greta Hlongwane. The first school to be visited by the group was Sehopotso Secondary School in Zone 12 which clinched a 100% pass-rate in its 2013 matric results. The objective of the visits are to conscientise citizens about the importance of education, to mobilise communities, to provide support to schools, teachers and learners, and to improve the quality of education for all children and youth, especially in poor communities. Mayathula Khoza asked learners if they had gotten their text books and stationery. She then assured them that they would be getting them before the end of the day. “I have brought you guys dignitaries, school uniforms and stationery,” she stated. Mayathula-Khoza says, “We are increasing our investment in this programme because we know
that, when poverty strikes a family, it is the children who bear the biggest brunt. Biological and intellectual growth cannot wait until a family has escaped poverty. We have a responsibility as a government that these vulnerable children do not run the risk of becoming the next generation of the poor. In order to turn this vicious cycle into a virtuous cycle, poverty reduction must start with children. Clearly, giving children access to quality basic social services is one of the most effective and efficient steps we can take to combat the scourge of child poverty”.
In a plight to ensure the smooth running of things right at the beginning of the year, Gauteng Social Development MEC Nandi Mayathula-Khoza, last week visited a number of schools around the Sedibeng region. Photo: Moleboheng Chaha.

Place of hope receives love

ORANGE FARMS. - The Sinethemba Village of Hope Hospice in Poortjie near Orange Farms recently received a fully equipped patient transport vehicle from Nedbank and Netcare. The vehicle will transport patients between the hospice and the hospital. Sinethemba Village provides care to destitute and ill adults as well as orphaned and vulnerable children. “The vehicle we used in the past was rather old and unreliable and far too small for the number of patients we have at the hospice . We could transport only two or three patients at a time, so the driver would need to make a few round trips to get everyone to their doctor’s appointments, which we could not afford. “We are so grateful to Nedbank and Netca-
re for this generous donation as it will make a real difference to our patients,” says Rebecca Njikelana, Head Sister at the hospice. The health of people in South Africa remains one of the biggest threats to the country’s future and that is why it is one of the key Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) focus areas at Nedbank: “We strongly believe that the success of our communities is inseparable from the well-being of its people.” “The bank invests in long-term, sustainable initiatives that build healthy communities such as the Sinethemba Village,” said Kone Gugushe, Divisional Executive for CSR at Nedbank. Mande Toubkin, General Manager of Trauma, Emergency and Corporate Social Investment (CSR) at Netcare, emphasises that CSR is also deeply ingrained in the fabric of the healthcare group.

Community team and cops provide veggie garden Lazarus Dithagiso
SEBOKENG. - There’s plenty of fresh vegetables and a flower garden at the Sebokeng Police Station. Thanks to the inititiative of the station commander, Brigadier Jan Scheepers. At least 16 women could not claim poverty after they were allowed to start the vegetable garden inside the yard. Violet Mzangwa, supervisor of the team said that, since they planted beetroots, spinach, pumpkin, potatoes, sweet potatoes and beans, they managed to reach families in Sebokeng Station Commander Brigadier Jan Scheepers and Detective-Head Colonel Mxolisi Nama recently handed spinach seeds to Violet Mzangwa and her team behind the Police Station. Boiketlong. She said they focused mostly on families who have nothing to put on the table and took into cognisance that there are some communitymembers that are ill and that must take medication after food. “Vegetables are healthy food and they do not cost as much as meat,” said Mzangwa. Her statement was echoed by Nonkululeko Skoti, co-ordinator of the garden. She said they visited the station after realising there was fertile soil behind the police station that needed to be turned into garden. “Our mission fell into the good hands of Brigadier Scheepers,” she said. Scheepers said he did not think twice when he contributed the women’s idea. ‘Look,I knew there was a dire need in the area for the vegatables,’ he said. The result was that the station bought the vegetable seeds to start in November.

Canadians donate wheelchairs via local Rotary clubs

VANDERBIJLPARK. - Presidents of Riverside, Vanderbijlpark and Vereeniging Rotary clubs, through a donation from the Canada Wheelchair Foundation, recently distributed to disabled people at a sterling function hosted at the Shakespear Inn hotel. Canadian Wheelchair Foundation spokesperson Urs Schaufelbuhl said they were moved by the sight of disabled people crawling on the ground while others used dilapidated wheelchairs. ‘We decided through the invitation from local Rotary clubs to change lives,’ he said. South Africa was one of seven countries to which the Canadians donated. ‘It took us two years to identify disabled people who qualified for a wheelchair,’ said Schaufelbuhl. One recipient, Samuel Ncoya (54), was clearly delighted. Hans Zihlman,
PROF KHAN / MAMA AYO
chairperson of the Rotary Wheelchair Foundation from Daybreak Rotary, Campbell River, Canada, and Johan van Pletzen, president of the Riverside Rotary Club, thanked different organisations for making everything possible by arranging with local organisations. Van Pletzen said the Canadians distributed 23 wheelchairs whereby Riverside received 9, Vereeniging 7 and Vanderbijlpark 7 respectively. Riverside Rotary paid for shipping and transport to Vanderbijlpark, he said. He said the disabled were reached through the assistance of the organisations. The director of the Trauma Centre George Sibanda said the disabled people of Bophelong could not restrain their excitement at receiving new wheelchairs. ‘This is one of those good days that will always be remembered through imagining the good work done by the Rotarians. ‘A synergy has been forged between the organisation and the clubs,’ said Sibanda.

Aerobics Marathon
SEDIBENG. - Former SuperSport United and Bafana Bafana player Pete “Fire” Khoabane has rolled up his sleeves to embark on an aerobics marathon to promote a healthy lifestyle and fitness in Sedibeng. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sports Khoabane, who was well known for his hard-tackling during his hayday as a player, says this is part of his contribution to the Sedibeng community for being supportive during his time as a player. “I thought that there is nothing better to give back to the community than a healthy lifestyle and fitness. I want to encourage everyone out there to be part of this initiative because it is all about a healthy lifestyle. I want help as
much as I can to have a healthy and fit society. I enjoy each and every moment of what I’m doing and the response is incredible,” says Khoabane. Some of the areas that they have already visited include Sharpeville, Sebokeng Zone 14 and Bophelong. According to Khoabane this initiative started this year. Khoabane challenged other former soccer professional players to come on board and help him take this project forward. He adds, ‘It is time to take care of those who took care of us while we were still playing soccer. These people spent their last cent just to come and watch us playing and now it is our turn to support them by getting involved in community projects.’

ahead to the Promotion League new season. Speaking with Sedibeng Ster Sports after his fruitful meeting with referees, Ndlovu says the meeting was part of preparations for the new season. He says he was happy with the response and the input of those who attended the meeting. Among topics discussed was the question of which referees were going to work in the new season to avoid last year’s misunderstanding between the clubs and the match officials regarding fees. There were plenty of challenges last year with some match offices failing to honour their assignments due to lack of communication. Ndlovu says among the things that they want to improve are channels of communication. According to Ndlovu , last season, he received complaints from teams that claimed there were no referees at their games , especially towards the end of the season. ‘The meeting was to iron out some issues with the referees because they play a big role in our football. Without them our football is nothing, hence we decided to have this kind of meeting with them. I’m happy with its outcome and I can’t wait for the season to start. We discussed all the relevant issues that affected us last season,’ says Ndlovu. Ndlov revealed to Sedibeng Ster Sports that the association will call a meeting for all the Emfuleni Local Football Association teams including the junior soccer teams as a way forward.

Talent lost to initiation schools Shooting From The Hip is not going to waste space writing about Bafana Bafana’s performance against Nigeria over the weekend. Bafana Bafana have become a pain in my neck with this ongoing embarrassment of a performance - especially in high profile tournaments. As a hosting nation many expected them to go as far as the final but this was not to be as they suffered a 3 - 1 defeat against the Super Eagles of Nigeria. In fact there is nothing to write about even if Shooting From The Hip wanted to! The bigger picture is not Bafana Ba-
fana - it is the development of football in this country. Development coaches here face a serious challenge - with promising talent wasted because of illegal initiation schools. With due respect, initiation schools play a part in destroying our talent and Shooting From The Hip is convinced that he shares this feeling with other development coaches in this region. This has become a headache to development coaches, especially during the festive season with most of these promising youngsters going to initiation schools. It is not as if Shooting From The Hip hates them but, recently, they have caused nothing but pain to parents. How can a 13-year-old boy go to initiation school? To make matters worse, they then come back and are disrespectful to elders because
they have been told they are men. Men my foot! This is a serious problem because when these boys return from initiation school, they come back changed and some of them quit playing soccer. ISome of the coaches even chase them away because they become a bad influence on other players. In fact, development coaches aren’t the only ones who experience this problem. Shooting From The Hip is aware that teachers at school also have serious problems with boys who come from initiation schools. Apparently they disrespect their teachers. Some of them quit school because they no longer want to be treated like children - they have been told that they are now ‘MEN’. If we continue to lose potential footballers like this, then football will continue to suffer. What is happening with Bafana Bafana is the
result of lack of development in this country. Now what is going to happen if our talent goes to initiation schools and is lost in the process? This is something that all the people involved in football must address before we lose more potential footballers. Shooting From The Hip has no problem with soccer players going to initiation school but why - when they come back – do they become so different as players from what they were before they went there? What changed them? What did their teachers tell them? Were they told to be disrespectful to their elders? Parents, teachers and coaches: it is your responsibility to save these youngsters from destroying their futures.
Pioneer Cricket Clubs’ star Zacharia Nale
VANDERBIJLPARK. - While many youngsters fall in love with soccer Mohlomi “Zane” Lehoko decided to take another direction entirely and plays cricket. In an exclusive interview with Sedibeng Ster Sports, Lehoko says he started playing cricket at an early age. He says he was recruited by other boys of his age who perceived that he was doing nothing. However, this Sharpeville Pioneer Cricket Club all-rounder was also a good soccer player but lost interest in soccer after he suffered a knee-injury. He believes that cricket is the only sport that will take him to another level. He says when he started his cricket career little did he know that he would become a household name in this sport. Lehoko has established a development cricket team in Sharpeville. Asked who inspired him to play cricket Lehoko, the nephew of former Kaizer Chiefs Legend Simon “Bull” Lehoko, says that Thabo Mokoena, Jacob Mofulut-
si and Mike Ramajoe played an important role in his cricket career. Sharpeville Pioneer Cricket is playing league games and their home ground is Cecil Oldridge Park. They play on Saturdays. “It is amazing how I started playing this sport because many youngsters thought I was crazy when I told them I was going to play cricket. At that time, cricket was not popular in townships because most youngsters were playing soccer. But what I like is that most of them are now playing cricket. I wish all my coaches and mentors especially Mr Ramajoe for helping me realise my dream. Today I’m a better cricket player because of them and I wish to thank them,’ said an excited Lehoko. Mike Ramajoe describes Le-
hoko as a most talented cricketer who has a bright future in South African cricket. ‘I have no doubt in my mind that the boy will go places because he loves this sport and he is determined to work hard to achieve his dream. He is one of the best all-rounders in cricket to date in this region,’ says Ramajoe. Right: Mohlomi "Zane" Lehoko is fast making name for himself in cricket. Photo: Zacharia Nale.

VUT FC waits until late
Zacharia Nale
SHARPEVILLE. - VUT FC showed a neversay-die attitude when they scored a late equaliser to force the game to end in a 1-1 draw in the Safa Sedibeng SAB League match against Vaal Milano FC at George Thabe Stadium on Saturday. This much awaited encounter failed to live up to expectations despite the fact that local soccer fans came in numbers to witness this derby. ‘The Students’ were the better side for the better part of the proceeding but failed to convert their chances into goals. VUT FC came out smoking in the second half, firing on all cylinders, asking questions, but their efforts were wasted, especially in the final third. At this stage the home side – Vaal Milano - huffed and puffed trying to stop speedy VUT FC’s forwards. The visitors broke the home side’s supporters’ hearts when they finally equalised with less than five minutes before the end of the game. This was after good footwork from the right side, which ended at the back of the net with a fine header. After this goal the silence was very loud from the home side’s fans. This result ensures that ‘The Students’ remain on the top of the Safa Sedibeng SAB League log with 15 points from seven games. However, Try Me Again FC are putting on the pressure, being second on the log with a point separating the two sides. Mighty Blues FC are slowly but surely closing the gap at the top as they occupy third place on the log with 12 points from the same number of games with VUT FC and Try Me Again. Vaal Milano FC dropped to fourth place after their game against VUT FC on Saturday. They came into Saturday’s game third on the log. Sebokeng are head to head in points with 11 Vaal Milano, however, Milano still has two games in hand.
Meanwhile, Reki Manyora, United Scientist FC and the newly promoted Sebokeng Ajax FC are likely relegation candidates if they don’t get away from the relegation zone – the sooner the better. The three are languishing at the bottom of the log. However, it is too early and they can still pull themselves out of the relegation quagmire. The rest of the weekend results: Sailor FC 0-1 Central United FC Ghetto Seven 1-0 Sebokeng Ajax fc Vaal Milano FC 1-1 VUT FC Real Barcelona fc 4-0 Manyora FC United Scientist FC 0-0 Real Hearts FC Hillside United FC 0-2 Mighty Blues FC Verona FC 0-1 Try Me Again FC The Birds FC 1-0 RESA FC
