EVATON. - ‘The City Boyz Pantsula Dance Group’ has again climbed the ladder and they have without doubt become household names. While a host of young men in Sedibeng would rather disrupt their future with drugs and other harmful substances, ‘The City Boyz’ have only one thing in mind - which is to reach for the stars. This dance
group from the dusty streets of Evaton was formed by a group of individuals who have shown determination and dedication to their work. The young men recently finished shooting a documentary which covers the lives of these young, talented artists who embrace ‘Pantsula’ dancing as a career and a lifestyle. Pantsula dance was associated with criminal elements in the past, but the group has dispelled that myth and proved the doubting ‘Tho-
mases’ wrong. Thabang Motsoeneng, the communication liaison of the group, says that they are just not the best they can be and want to do more. “We have shown love and determination, which is not enough for this kind of career. We need to do more as we push to reach our for dreams. We have fallen and come back strong since the days that we started.” says Motsoeneng. The group has also appeared on many national television

shows and has won numerous dance competitions through their sheer talent and hard work. Thabang Radebe, the group’s choreographer says, “We are on social networks like YouTube and we are delighted about the growth in the number of viewers of our videos.” The group consists of five members; Radebe, Motsoeneng, Gabriel Maja, Patrick Mazibuko and Mzwakhe Qumba.

We need help or we are going to die! Mduduzi Mathebula
EVATON. - “We need help; we are kept in our own skins and life is difficult without drugs,” says a group of ‘nyaope’ addicts in Evaton who mourn the death of a friend who was killed after stealing a car radio recently. These young people have one vision for their lives that is to come out from under the burden they have put upon themselves. “There are two ways out of this mess - either we die or get killed. Nyaope is a curse and has no mercy,” says one of the addicts while injecting himself with the potent drug. They claim to smoke or use six ‘brown packs’ which cost R30 each. This amounts
to R180 per day. Multiplying R180 per day by seven and then multiplying this by four adds up to R5 040 per month and R 60 480 per annum. This is money they don’t have; they have to steal or think of something. “We are very creative and when we venture to steal, we leave no stone unturned. We get to places people never thought we would, even though we know what we are doing is wrong we still break into people’s houses and steal,” says an addict. While explaining their pain and frustration, it is clear that these young people have brains and are as talented and educated as anyone
and that all they they want is to live a normal life. Sedibeng Ster spoke to the parent of one of the addicts Ntswaki Motshiwa - who says she never thought her boy would become a nyaope addict. “He was an A student from Grade R. “He left school and now he is just an addict. “What have we done to deserve this?” Motshiwa laments. Mzwakhe Msibi from the Toughest Youth Minds says rehabilitation is a process. To take a
step toward healing shows they have the right motive. “We will try and visit them to see what we can do as an organisation. However, they need to be willing to make that difficult journey themselves,” says Msibi. Evaton Police spokesperson Constable Tshifiwa Mitileni confirms that a case of murder is being investigated after a youngster was killed for allegedly stealing a car radio in the area.

Registrations paralysed by funding Moleboheng Chaha
SEDIBENG. - It seems that the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) has brought tertiary institutions around the country to a standstil. This follows allegations that many students have failed to register for this academic year because of failure to acquire financial aid from NSFAS. According to Vaal North West University (NWU) students, some of them failed to register at the university because of the 2013 academic year funds that were not paid by the NSFAS. The Vaal University of Technology (VUT) Student Representative Council (SRC) was last week suspended following an illegal demonstration that was held in which students

raised many other issues including that of registration and NSFAS failure to give them financial assistance. Speaking to our sister newspaper Vaalweekblad,VUT spokesperson Michael Khubone confirmed the suspension. “Following reports regarding the SRC on unbecoming conduct, the Vice-Chancellor decided to suspend the current student leadership until investigations have been completed.” Khubone added that the allegations included disruption of the registration process, interference with the allocation and management of residences and intimidation and eviction of staff from their workplace. SRC president Jackson Moeketsi Setlhare says, “We did not protest. All we did was demonstrate and that is within in our rights. “The NSFAS matter has affected most students and

Many returning students did not receive their allocations for 2013 and therefore have outstanding balances on their accounts.Due to insufficient funding many deserving first-year students have also been turned back. “Protests began yesterday. We plan to intensify our mass protests until we find a positive response.” Makhombeni added that fee increments were a major contributing factor to the crisis. “They (Fee increments) deplete the resources and reduce the number of beneficiaries.”

Let’s get one thing straight, a drug user will always be a drug user, that is not up for for debate. I am not about to write a ‘Good or Bad Behaviour’ speech here, but the young men from Evaton (that appear on this week’s Page 3) must be commended for their acceptance that they have a problem and need help. They need help to end their addiction to the most dangerous drug that has ravished South Africa’s townships, namely ‘nyaope’. In a nation already belea-

Lend a helping hand guered by high rates of unemployment, poverty, HIV infection, violent crime and rape, the poor black underclass of South Africa are dealing with yet another crisis that is ravaging their communities – an epidemic involving a cheap drug cocktail comprising heroin, marijuana and other elements like rat poison, cleaning detergents and even crushed-up pills used in treatments of AIDS patients. Most community members have long yelled out that they are being held hostage by this drug and no longer have anywhere to move, nor do they have anything of value left in their homes. Maseko said that the meeting was held to plan various things that would be implemented towards the elections. One such thing was the soonto-be-launched PAM door-todoor campaign and the manifesto that will be launched across all regions including the Vaal triangle. Maseko even told Sedibeng Ster that PAM was very confident going towards the 2014 national elections. “We as PAM have resolved to contest the elections. We are also in talks with the PAC (Pan Africanist Congress) about the two parties - PAM and the PAC - coming together to form one party. I know for a fact that there are those amongst these ‘nyaope’ users who are ‘beyond repair’, but if one of them - like these young men - does stand up and say: ‘I need help’ - should we turn a blind eye? No. As I have always said in connection with HIV- AIDS: WE ARE ALL AFFECTED! The young men from Evaton should be commended and help should be sought for them so that they can mend their ways and live healthy, respectable, ordinary lives. A second chance for them should be rehabilitation where an answer can be found for their recovery in the long process of eradicating this highly addictive problem. Misinformation regarding jobs for matriculants at Home Affairs ry 2014. In this regard the selection of prospective candidates has been finalised. The cadets will be taken through the Home Affairs national certificate on Home Affairs services. The aim is to produce skills and offer experience to young graduates, who may, depending on their performance, be absorbed within our services or seek employment in other departments and elsewhere. The statements adds that the cadet programme is part of the strategy to attract, train and introduce to the public service new officers who are security-conscious, professional, hard-working, patriotic and endowed with the right attitude of mind to serve the people with dignity while upholding the principles of Batho Pele and the Constitution.
SEDIBENG.- The Director-General of Home Affairs, Mkuseli Apleni, has noted with concern misinformation in some social media circles claiming that the department is offering training with prospects of employment to matriculants. The Department wishes to put it on the record that such reports are false and devoid of truth, with a potential to mislead young people who are desperately in need of work. In a statement Apleni says that what Home Affairs has initiated through its Learning Academy in the quest to contribute to the national drive for skills development and fighting unemployment is a cadet programme for unemployed graduates. SEBOKENG. - Members of the “A mile in my shoe” mentorship programme donated shoes and uniforms to 15 Fukama Primary School learners in Zone 12 on Friday. Programme founder Felicia Dial says that she founded the organisation as a way to close the gap that existed in society in terms of a shortage of mentors, and later persuaded peo-
ple to donate uniforms and shoes to the needy. “This is the first school we are donating to. We chose this school because we found out that there was a need for such a donation; the kids here come from different backrounds and some parents cannot even afford to buy their kids the uniforms required.” School Principal Nomaswazi Nxumalo says the majority of kids at this school come from poor backgrounds. “We are delighted that there are people that still care; the uniforms received today will surely go a long way.” Nxumalo stated that it was important for the community to invest in these kids as they are the future of our country. Talking about the problems the school faces, Nxumalo added that some of the kids are affected psychologically by the circumstances they face. “If a child realises that he or she does not have the things the other kids have, such as uniforms, school bags and shoes, it is often difficult for that child to concentrate in class. Needy kids often become sad at school.“I thank the sponsor for donating and even more so Social Development for trying to alleviate some these problems.” Because many kids are stilll short of uniforms, Nxumalo asks that sponsors contact the school on (016) 594 2815 for donations.
Healthy fun for Evaton kids Moleboheng Chaha
EVATON. - When adults think about exercise, they imagine working out in the gym on a treadmill or lifting weights. For kids, exercise means playing and being physically active. This is the scene at the recently-opened Evaton Park Gym, which boasts a diversity of gym equipment. Over the weekend the park was packed with kids who were surprised with the new implementation. They could not get enough of the idea of having fun with friends and also getting exercise. The bonus is that the gym is available to all kids from the surrounding communities and free of charge. One of the kids overjoyed at the sight of the new play gym was Seithati Dlamini (12), who could be seen jumping from one apparatus to another. Dlamini says: “This is the coolest thing ever invented. For me this is really great because it is just a walk away from my house.” Another kid, Lebohang Lephuthing (13) states that because the park is usually filled with kids who also want to get onto the various apparatus, they all take turns using the different ones to accommodate everyone else. “We are so excited about the equipment that we don’t even fight over it.” Lephuting concludes.

of a new office of the SANBS in the MediVillage Centre, Corner Joubert Street and Grey Avenue. “The aim of the machines is to save lives in the Vaal Triangle,” said Elna Volschenk, clinic supervisor. According to her, one machine can help three people at the same time. “Platelets are small colourless cell fragments circulating in the blood. When a blood vessel is injured, platelets collect at the site and form a plug to stop bleeding. “It can only be stored for five days after being collected; therefore regular and frequent donors are demanded. Asked who requires platelet transfusions, she said patients with leaukemia and other cancers who are undergoing chemo-radiation therapy, bone marrow or organ transplants. “To be a donor, it requires a healthy lifestyle. A patient should weigh 55kg or more, from the age of 16 up to 65 years of age. Platelet donors are screened to assess whether they are suitable to donate,” she said.

Where is respect for development coaches? Shooting From The Hip overheard some youngsters talking among themselves: ‘I hate coaching because I don’t want to be end up like ‘Bra’ so-and-so.’ In fact these boys looked at their coaches and clearly associated coaching with being poor and unemployed. But having said this, Shooting From The Hip can’t help agreeing with these boys because, if one looks at most development coaches, their lives are generally miserable. It’s heartbreaking when you look at some development coaches despite the efforts they make in development football. My exact point is that, after the Emfuleni Local Football Association meeting at George Thabe Stadium on Sunday, Shooting from the Hip realised some of us are involved in
the development of football but still have no passion for this beautiful game. Shooting From The Hip also realised this sport is no longer respected by the people I expected would be role models for our youth. The sad state of our football is that the respect development coaches used to have for each other is gone. Shooting From The Hip feels sorry for youngsters coached by these coaches because they are not good role models for our youth. It seems as if these coaches have forgotten their role, which is to teach or educate these youngsters about football and life skills. This region is no longer losing potential footballers but good coaches who are passionate about this game because of jealousy among development coaches.

Safa Sedibeng SAB become more interesting

BOPHELONG. - Whilst United Scientist FC and Reki Manyora FC fight for survival at the bottom of the log, Real Barcelona is slowly but surely closing the gap at the top of Safa Sedibeng SAB League standing. The tournament specialist collected the maximum points when they beat sixth-placed Mighty Blues FC 1-0 in the SAB League
match played at the Boipatong Stadium on Sunday. Barcelona FC moved to fourth position on the log with 14 points from eight games. This Sebokeng-based side is among the candidates that challenge for the league title come the end of the season. The game started at a high pace with both sides searching for an early goal, but their final third left much to be de-

sired. Although on paper Barcelona FC looks like a much better team the new-look Mighty Blues FC, pitch-conditions did not allow the two teams to play their normal passing game, especially the home Mighty Blues FC, whilst Barcelona turned this condition in their favour. It was a game of missed opportunities. Mighty Blues FC can only blame themselves for being defeated. The home side missed a penalty after the referee judged Barcelona players to have handled the ball in the penalty box. Home team’s supporters could not believe their eyes when their trusted striker missed the penalty that could have levelled the score. Real Barcelona FC too could have increased the tally but failed to capitalise on the shaky Mighty Blues defence. In another game top-ofthe-table VUT FC maintained their lead at the summit of the log when they trounced Hillside
United 5-2 at Isak Steyl Stadium on Friday night. In another shocking result Sailor FC hammered the struggling and bottom-of-the-log Reki Manyora 7-0, in another Safa Sedibeng SAB League played at the Zone 15 Stadium over the weekend whilst third-placed Vaal Milano FC beat RESA 5-0. This one-sided game took place at Dick Fourie Stadium on Saturday. Elsewhere, second-placed Try Me Again FC pushed United Scientists FC deep into relegation when they beat them 2-0 in another game that formed part of the Safa Sedibeng SAB League clash at Meyerton Stadium over the weekend. The rest of the results: Sebokeng Ajax FC 1-0 Verona FC Ghetto Seven FC 2-1 Central United FC Real Hearts FC 2-1 The Birds FC
