SEBOKENG.- All hell broke loose when the Boiketlong (Popularly known as Serope se a benya) residents closed the main entrances to the Sebokeng township in a housing and service delivery protest yesterday morning. Traffic came to a standstill as the angry residents closed the roads with stones, and burning tyres. Despite the attempt of Police to cool the situation down school children and workers were left stranded as public transport was disrupted. The residents claim that Emfuleni
Local Municipality (ELM) has been making empty promises for years and that they have had enough.. This is not the first time that the community of Boiketlong has protested. Year in and year out they have voiced their anger at the municipality for failing to provide them with services since 1996. At their last protest the local councilor’s shack and two cars were set alight. The residents say that they are going to protest until their demands are met and they are also threatening not to go to the national polls this year at a date still to

be announced. “We are not going to vote if they do not address our problems, the only thing they want is our votes. How long are we going to live in such a disgusting situation?” they ask. ELM spokesperson Klaas Mofomme says that the Municipality wants to put it on record that the protest has nothing to do with the provision of basic services as it is related to housing development in the area which is the competency of the Gauteng Province Department of Housing. He adds that it is unfortunate that this matter has now affected the entire community
of Sebokeng. “We have been engaging with the Boiketlong community through a series of meetings where we explained that the provincial housing department is in talks with the owners of the private land where the housing development is suppose to take place”, ELM Mayor Greta Hlongwane said, “I have personally expressed my support to them regarding housing development. However, we need to allow the process to be completed so that development can take place. We are still waiting for a progress report from Province.”

Missing: Mpotu family seek relative Mduduzi Mathebula
SEDIBENG. – A family needs help finding David Mpotu who was last seen when he went to work last year. Apparently Mpotu (59) stays on the farm he works on till month-end. He then visits home after he is paid. According to the family, the old man fell ill at work and his friends told the family that he was sent to hospital. Thapelo Mpotu, his grandson, says they got a call to see Mpotu at Kopanong Hospital. “We went there and we did not find him. The hospital said his last record was when he was going to collect medication for sugar diabetes,” says Thapelo devastated. Mpotu has been missing without trace since then. It is now alleged that Mpotu is mentally ill which the family denies. “He never had any mentally complications he is just diabetic. We don’t understand the entire mess of how he got sick and went missing,” says Thapelo. He adds that they have opened a Missing Persons case with the Vereeniging Police and hope the community can help find their beloved grandfather.
Dingane David Mpou has vanished without a trace. He is urgently sought by his family.

No proper infrastructure Lazarus Dithagiso
BOPHELONG. - Residents of Khambule, Lubembe, and Mthimkulu Streets and Thema Road in Bophelong have been living in fear ever since the local contractor erected a new tarred road near the sport stadium. During heavy rain, Thema Road near Bophelong Stadium becomes a no-go zone. There’s no proper infrastructure as the stormwater pipes cannot convey the water in the proper direction because the stormwater pipes are blocked with soil and other material. The water flows from five streets and causes floods in front of the stadium entrance. Anna Nene Thala, of Khambule street, living three houses away from the stadium, said she reported the matter repeatedly to Ward Councillor Mabuti Bhekisha. Bhekisha assigned a truck to deliver soil in those streets but this did not help. The soil made things worse, she said. “We blame the contractor that erected tarred road at Thema. There’s no proper infrastructure as - every time it rains - the stormwater pipes are blocked. The water runs into nearby houses. Pensioner Son-
nyboy Mogotsi (65) said he tried to engage with the contractor while they were busy installing stormwater pipes. “I informed them that they have installed the pipes in the wrong area. Instead of making the water flow in the right direction,’ said Mogotsi, ‘they closed the old pipes.’ He said a better solution was that the contractor take out the old dilapidated pipes. As long as the pipes are built in this way, residents will never rest once it rains,” said Mogotsi. Most residents complain that the water damages their wood doors and furniture inside the houses. ‘Imagine if there were competitions or a tournament in the stadium before it rains? No one would be able to go out for the next three days,’ said Mogotsi, who lives a stone’s throw from the stadium. For the children the area becomes a swimming pool after the rain. They enjoy swimming, some in their clothes. “We wish it could rain every day,” they say. For these children, Thema Road has been turned into a swimming pool but to the householders, rain is a crisis. Malema, heavily guarded by private security, used the back door entrance to the court. Some of his supporters, who had travelled from far as Limpopo, said they were disappointed as he did not even open the dark-tinted window of his grey Mercedes Benz to greet them. Sedibeng Region EFF member Parks Khaiyane said, “We have decided that the commander-in-chief should not address the public. Our enemies might think we are campaigning.”

VANDERBIJLPARK. - Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) commander-in-chief Julius Malema briefly appeared in the Vanderbijlpark Magistrates Court on a speeding charge last week. His R5000 bail was extended to February 28. Malema was arrested for driving at a speed of 215 km/h in a 120km/h zone on the N1 in December. Magistrate Mphela postponed the case to give defence attorney Tumi Mokwena time to examine the state’s case against Malema.

SEDIBENG COLLEGE RECEIVES BRITISH COUNCIL INTERNATIONAL PARTNERSHIP AWARD 2013 Sedibeng College and Harrow College in UK have won the British Council’s Best New International Skills Partnership Award 2013.
The partnership between the four colleges, which began in July 2013, is part of the British Council’s Skills for Employability programme.
Jackey Mosesi is the project lead at Sedibeng College for the British Council International Partnership Skills for Employability Project between Harrow College (UK), Dudley College (UK) and Belfast Metropolitan College (Northern Ireland).
Skills for Employability is a British Council initiative that addresses the demand for skills in a global economy and aims to improve educational and training systems so that they are better able to respond to the labour market.
She represented Sedibeng College in Morocco for the 2013 Skills for Employability Seminar and has received an award for the Best New International Partnership. The achievement has been made possible by the dedication and support received from Dr Mashele (Sedibeng College Principal/CEO) dedicated staff members of Sedibeng College, and overwhelming support received from Imperial Technical Training Academy.
The programme focuses on building strong relationships with industry, employers, governments and training providers, by way of the UK’s expertise on standards, innovation and creativity in the field of skills training where the UK is a market leader. The award itself was presented by Alan Gogbashian, deputy British ambassador in Moroc-
co at the British Council’s ‘Bringing the Learning Home’ event, which this year took place in Casablanca, Morocco.

Make up your minds No sooner had the ink dried on the paper that the DA-AGANG had signed their political matrimonial confessions, a divorce was announced. I need not persuade you or any dimwit on the streets that this marriage was doomed from the start. As the leaders of both political parties played a blaming game pointing fingers at each other and offering different reasons as to why they had to break up, I was left amused. The partnership of these two political parties was never going to last, what with their ambitions being nearly a carbon copy? Surely it was going to be impossible for Mamphele Ramphele to demand that she simultaneously lead AGANG and be the DA’s presidential candidate, hitting two birds with one stone. The more the political scene in this country changes the more it stays the same granted that if the merger with Agang had been successful, it would have been a significant step for the DA. In the 20 years that South Africa has been a democracy there has never been a stable political party that can give the ruling party a
run for their money or even come next to disposing of them. For over two decades the public has been fed the same hullaballoo that is mediocre oppositional politics. Everyone of them wants to be hailed as a hero that has gotten rid of the ruling party that is ‘doing nothing but enriching themselves at the expense of the taxpayer.’ Yet they themselves are unable to find a common ground to come up with concrete strategies that can change the current political landscapes insted we see resignations that are handed in at will. It is apparent that the technicalities of DA-AGANG’s merger were not discussed thoroughly and most of the decisions and announcements were made hastily. The timing was not right and the only people that have been left perplexed now are the poor electorates. Many aspiring politicians should take a leaf from this political drivel or we will continue to be ruled ‘UNTIL JESUS COMES.’ I rest my case. Lerato...

Evaton is not under goverment jurisdiction Mduduzi Mathebula
EVATON. – “Evaton is not the government’s land. It’s the land of our forefathers and it’s not for sale.” This is the message of the Evaton Heritage Trust Council. The council claims the land was bought by Eva Adams who gave them free-hold rights. “We want the government, especially the Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM), to recognise us as the state owner of Evaton. They are doing as they please as if they have the right to do so. We are not selling the land. We urge government to stop meddling with our land,” says Evaton Heritage Council chairperson Bulane Lesibu. The council says it has written letters in efforts to meet with ELM so issues can be thrashed out and respect awarded where it is due. “We are not against development, but we want them to engage us as the estate owners of Evaton.” Lesibu reiterated that Evaton is not government property. They claim they are willing to meet any authorised official about the issue, but their efforts have been fruitless. This group says that they formed the Heritage Trust Council due to local government interference in their land. “Evaton does not fall in the jurisdiction of the local authority,” says Daniel Modise, an organiser of the Evaton Heritage Trust Council. Head of ELM Communications, Stanley Gaba says they are not aware of such a council. However, if they want to make an appointment with the mayor they should report to the mayor’s office or ask to meet with the municipal manager. “ If they can’t, I will personally make an appointment for them, he ends.”

SEDIBENG STER
Sedibeng reduced to a dozing giant
Yours truly – Shooting From The Hip - watched the movie ‘Head Of State’ over the weekend. Did I hear somebody ask, “What does this have to do with football or sports?’’ Of course, the movie has nothing to do with football, but reminded Shooting From The Hip who we as journalists are serving - the community, not the individual. The reason why Shooting From The Hip brings this topic up is because the movie conveys the fact that we are not serving a certain group of individuals but a community at large. My point is that for too long, media personnel or journalists have forgotten what
their duties are. In case you forgot, let me remind you, as media, our duty is to educate, entertain and inform. The media is the voice of the unheard and the eye of the community. You say, ‘Hell no, we still don’t get your point.’ Shooting From The Hip has realised that this region has become a sleeping giant precisely because of the silence of good people. This region has ground to a standstill when it comes to sports and politics because of those in power. This is the same region that produced household names in politics, education and football, but in its most recent form, it never rains but pours for Sedibeng. This region is swiftly losing the potential leaders of tomorrow because of alcohol abuse and corruption. The pride of this region is fast fading because those who used to care so much about this region have lost trust. Shooting From The Hip thinks back to when this region hosted big events such as political conferences, events such as ‘Jazz By The River’ and football events such as Four Nation Tournaments. Those who watched Head of State over the
weekend will agree with Shooting From The Hip that we need to go back and see where we went wrong. The Vaal used to come to a standstill on Wednesdays when local schools played soccer. Young and old used to flock to the nearby soccer fields to watch schools such as Jordan, Tshepo-Themba, Botebo-Tsebo, Lekoa- Shandu, Maqeke Secondary Schools and others on Wednesdays - but this is no more. As a media power house, it is also our duty to remind those in power that this region used to be respected in many ways - but not anymore. In case you’re not aware, this is a region in which great leaders and footballers were born. To make matters worse, when Shooting From The Hip visits other regions, the first question they ask me is - “Where is Vaal Professionals aka Vaal Monster?” It is our responsibility to bring back those good golden days when everyone wanted to visit the Vaal Triangle because of its rich history. Shooting From The Hip’s message is simple, ‘Fear not.’
Bubbilee injects R100 000 to grassroots football Zacharia Nale
SEDIBENG. - For the first time in history a company donated R100 000 towards the development of football in Sedibeng. Bubbilee Duncanville branch made history when they sponsored Sedibeng SA Saylan Football Agency to run a grassroots programme that started recently at Qedilizwe Artificial Turf in Evaton North. This is the initiative of former Orlando Pirates dreadlocked midfielder Daniel ‘Sailor’ Tshabalala, who is Sedibeng SA Saylan Football Agency’s chairman. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sports, Tshabalala says that - as a former professional soccer player - he wants to plough back into the community of Sedibeng. He says his heart is with grassroots football and he will do everything to ensure that the youngsters are taken care of in this region. “Look, as a former soccer player I feel there is a serious need for the development of these youngsters and I want to thank Bubbilee for coming on board,’ says Tshabalala. Project coordinator Thulani ‘Japan’ Mthimkulu says all the children are invited to come and participate in this unique programme on Saturday. Mthimkulu says grassroots football is for everyone everywhere, which is the best way to introduce or give sports to young people and provide them with sport in their own environment. Football Association Chairman Philip
Ndlovu says the project will help identify talent in the Emfuleni area. He is confident that the project will make an impact and he urges all Emfuleni coaches to support the initiative.
“I think this is what all of us wanted - to see our grassroots football being taken seriously and we are happy to be associated with the programme as our focus is the development of football in this region,” he concludes.

Mokwalakwala claims title at 20th Sasol Marathon SEDIBENG.- For the second time, the Sasol Marathon was won by Limpopo-born athlete, William Mokwalakwala at the DP de Villiers Stadium over the weekend in a time of 2:21:18. The 36-year-old’s six week training regime has paid off, awarding him the winning title for this year’s event. His previous winning time was 2:32:09 in 2003 and he has competed in the event ever since. “The marathon route is flat, allowing for a faster pace and the race is well planned with water points at approximately every 3km. In addition, the DP de Villiers Stadium was revamped, making the race more enjoyable,” said Mokwalakwala. In the female category, Ethiopian athlete Alemtsehay Hailu Kakisa who ran for Nedbank, set a time of 2:49:54. Following was Julanie Basson in a time of 3:06:49 and in third place was Marie Bruwer in a time of 3:10:46. “The Sasol Marathon is a highlight on our events calendar in Sasolburg, as it attracts families and passionate athletes and involves the community. Sasol is committed to making a difference in the areas it operates in and wants to make the Sasol Marathon an enjoyable event for all,” said Cobus Jansen, Manager of Public Affairs: Communication for Sasol, Sasolburg. This year marked the 20th Sasol Marathon and it was indeed fitting that this year’s event was the host of the 42.2km Free State Championships. As a Two Oceans and Comrades qualifier, the race is well-known for its flat and fast nature, allowing many athletes to achieve their personal best times on the 42.2km full marathon or 21.1km half marathon. In addition, there was also a 10km race and a 4.9 km fun run that was enjoyed by families. The DP de Villiers Stadium was recently revamped and is now regarded as a Level Two track and sports stadium with a new tartan track amongst other facilities that have been upgraded.
Thulani Mthimkulu (Sedibeng SA Saylan Football Agency Coordinator), Firoze Kotwal (Bubbilee), Philip Ndlovu (Emfuleni Local Football Association chairman), Goolam Ally (Bubbilee), Mandlendoda Dipanyekga (Sedibeng SA Saylan Football Agency, General Secretary) and Sailor Tshabalala (Sedibeng SA Saylan Agency, Chairman).
Lovers Day wheelchair basketball tourney held Zacharia Nale
EVATON. - All roads will lead to Evaton when Kgokgi Sports Foundation in conjunction with Sedibeng Disability Sports Club host Valentine’s Day Wheelchair basketball and a u/17 soccer tournament. This mouth-watering news was revealed to Sedibeng Ster by the
Foundation’s publicist Mondli Nkosi. This much anticipated event is scheduled to take place in Evaton from February 14-15. Nkosi says they invite all interested parties to come and participate in this unique programme. According to Nkosi the tournament is part of celebrating Valentine’s Day. Nkosi appeals
to all Evaton people to come and support the initiative. “As the Foundation, we care for those who are disabled. Hence we decided to organise the Valentine’s Day Wheelchair Basketball Tournament. This is also our part of contribution to the community of Sedibeng especially Evaton,” he concludes.
William Mokwalakwala’s six week training regime paid off, awarding him the winning title for this year’s event.
Junior league to start ahead of Promotion League Zacharia Nale
Emfuleni Local Football Association's junior league is to start ahead of Promo tion League. Photo: Zacharia Nale.
SEDIBENG. - For a change the junior soccer league (u/13 and u/15) will start ahead of the Emfuleni Local Football Association’s Promotion League. This was proposed during the Stream A meeting that took place at Sharpeville’s George Thabe Stadium recently. The teams suggested that the junior league be given the first priority because - all these years - the Promotion League teams get more attention than the junior soccer teams. It was agreed that the junior league would kick off in February while the Promotion League starts in March. According to the junior soccer teams’ representatives, the junior league is more im-
portant than Promotion League because it is where the promotion teams get the players. Emfuleni Local Football Association chairman Philip Ndlovu says he will meet with Stream B teams this week and discuss the issue. However, Ndlovu agreed with the teams that the junior league must start ahead of the Promotion League. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sport, Ndlovu says the foundation of football is at grassroots. “I think this makes sense because, as soon as the Promotion League starts, we forget about junior soccer teams and this is not supposed to happen. But this time around I think the teams have a valid reason to start with junior league. I support the idea because I also think this is
the right direction to take,” says Ndlovu. Meanwhile all the teams are urged to come forward to affiliate so that the league can start on time. Ndlovu says that this season they want to see lots of improvement, especially from the Promotion League. He says the association is not going to take on any teams as was the case last season, when some teams failed to honour their fixtures. He adds: “We are not going to make the same mistake we made last year by accepting everyone in the league, this is why the standard of our league was so poor last season. This season we want to improve the standard of our football.”

Local schools’ soccer teams fail to impress
Zacharia Nale
SEDIBENG. - Two local schools failed to proceed to the next stage of the 2014 Future Champions Gauteng Cup when they finished second and third in their respective groups during the Future Champions Gauteng Schools Cup held at the Isak Steyl Stadium over the weekend. Mohloli High School and Beverley Hills High School represented Sedibeng in this 3rd youth tournament. 14 schools around Gauteng province took part in this tournament. Safa School of Excellence were crowned the 2014 Future Champions after beating Sunward Park High School 2-0 in the final. These
two finalists, along with Johannesburg Secondary School and IR Lesolang High, all booked their place at the Champions Gauteng Cup Competition scheduled to take place in March. These schools will take on teams from academies of the professional clubs in the province as well as the Safa development teams. The Safa School of Excellence made up for the disappointment of losing in last year’s final when they were beaten by Johannesburg Secondary. This year they picked up a bronze medal after a 1-0 win against IR Lesolang High in the third-placed final. Meanwhile, Mohloli failed to qualify after
Weekend of upset for SAB League log leaders Zacharia Nale
SEDIBENG. - It was a less pleasant weekend for the Safa Sedibeng SAB League leaders - VUT FC and Try Me Again FC when they suffered defeat in their respective league matches. The Students suffered a shock 2-1 defeat at the hands of Real Barcelona in the top-ofthe-table clash match played at the Zone 15 Stadium on Sunday. Despite the defeat The Students are still topping the log with 19 points from 9 games. In another encounter the struggling The Birds FC brought the second-placed Try Me Again FC down to earth when they beat them 1-0 in another Safa Sedibeng SAB Le-
ague match played at the Boipatong Stadium on Sunday. The two teams’ defeat has provided the likes of Vaal Milano, Barcelona, Real Hearts and others with a chance to close the gap at the top of the log. However, the log standing is still the same despite this shocking result with both VUT FC and Try Me Again still leading the race. The rest of the weekend results: Real Hearts 4-0 FC RESA Sailor FC 0-1 Mighty Blues FC Ghetto Seven 2-2 Manyora FC United Scientists 1-2 Sebokeng Ajax FC Hillside United 1-7 Vaal Milano Verona 3-2 Central United FC
being edged down by IR Lesolang on goaldifference at the top of the table after those sides drew 1-1 and Mohloli could only manage a 3-2 win over Chipa Tabane High School. The School of Excellence breezed through Group B, winning all three matches, including a crushing 1-2 success over Meadowlands High. Gauteng Education MEC Barbara Creecy says they were thrilled by the fact that the Gauteng Schools Cup has grown in such stature over the last three years since it was first introduced in 2012.
SEDIBENG. - Regional Correctional Services officers held a sports competition on Tuesday at the Sasolburg Stadium. The day was nothing but ‘war’ with six correctional centres bent on topping their peers. The sports day initiative was embraced by regional commissioner Subashini Moodley, who was part of the event to the last minute. The games started on time as offenders from different regions assembled and departed to vie in their different sporting codes. The stadium was heavily guarded with TST for any would-be escapers. The correctional K9 Unit was also on hand. The battle for the best correctional centre emerged in the early stages of the day in Long Jump, High Jump and other field games. However, the best was reserved for last. The track racing was the crowd’s favourite and produced nothing but the best field game. Moodley says she was happy about the outcome and the great atmosphere the offenders/athletes produced. “We are very humbled by the way the games ended and the way our athletes conducted themselves. It shows that sports is a way to a person’s mind,” says Moodley. Kroonstad was nominated the best of them all, taking gold in most sporting codes. While others fought for position two, three and four, including Groenpunt and Kimberley.
