When asked how the assault happened. Rapakeng was alerted that the angered community was on its way. “I rushed home to alert my family about the situation, but the mob caught me before I reached home. “I tried to talk sense to them, but it was a waste of time and of energy that I could

instead use to save my life. I was hit on the head with a big golf club. I thought it was my last day on earth and that I wouldn’t be able to say goodbye to my children,” says Rapakeng. The Ward Councillor was then rushed to hospital after the incident, saved by members of the community who were against the assault. Rapakeng had been badly beaten up and hospitalised. A case of assault has been opened for investigation. Rapakeng says he hopes justice is served.

SEDIBENG.- The Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM) has acquired the services of new service providers for pauper burial. The new service providers are Moletlo Funerals, M.T. Funeral Parlours and Boiketlong Funeral Directors. To qualify as an indigent and deserve a pauper funeral, a family should have an income of less than R3 500 or none, identification documents, a death certificate should be provided, together with a confirming affidavit. A ward councillor should also be notified to facilitate the process. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster ELM MMC for Health and Social Development Sello Pitso says, “We parted ways amicably with our former service provider and would like to introduce to the public the new service providers that will serve the four areas of Emfuleni Local Municipality - Sebokeng, Vanderbijlpark, Vereeniging and Sharpeville.” The service providers will provide a coffin

According to ELM Communications head Stanley Gaba the motion to reinstate workers followed intensive negotiations between senior ELM management with the Gauteng Provincial leadership of the South African Municipal Workers Union, SAMWU: “The dismissed workers of ELM’s Waste Department are reinstated to their positions without any back pay as from February 3.” Gaba added that the dismissed workers would resume work only after signing the undertaking on the terms outlined in the contracts. South African Municipal Workers Union (Samwu) chairperson Sunnyboy Mofokeng told Sedibeng Ster that the re-instatement of the workers was not a victory, but was a winwin situation. “Both workers and employer need one another,” concluded Mofokeng.

Funeral service for Boiketlong victim

Mduduzi Mathebula

SEBOKENG. - Lerata Tladi (Rabolila), an eight-day dweller in Boiketlong, was fatally gunned down during a basic service delivery protest on Wednesday at the Masoheng robots. Tladi is from Ficksburg in the Free State a few kilometres towards Lesotho. The 26-year-old was gunned down in cold blood by unknown men who allegedly came in a bus to the protest. Full information could not be given to the media but it is believed that the shooter was a member of a well known political party. Tladi’s cousin Diphaphang Tladi said, “We are deeply dismayed by the murder of my cousin. It still sounds and feels like a dream. The entire family is trying to recover from the shock of losing him, says Diphaphang with grief written all over her face. Mmusi Maimane, DA Gauteng Premier candidate, says Premier Nomvula Mokonyane must launch a formal enquiry into the apparent collaboration betwn Police and the members of the party in the murder of Lerata Tladi. However, while family and friends are still shaken by what has happened, the three-day protest has calmed down. Sedibeng District Municipality Mayor Simon Mofokeng visited the area on

Friday and promised the community that soon they would receive better services with three types of houses to be built in the area. Geological surveyors have apparently tested and approved the ground in the area for the erection of houses. Though residents still feel the Municipality has not responded to most of their their grievances, time has left the situation tense but calm. Meanwhile a statement issued by the Sedibeng District Municipality says that it notices with distaste the manner in which some political parties are conducting themselves over the unfortunate death of the deceased and that like vultures, all are swooping down to turn this sad and unfortunate event into a political circus. “The Sedibeng District Municipality in consultation with the family had hardly finalized the funeral arrangements and these parties are shouting in the public arena, claiming that they will be conducting the burial of the late Mr Lerata Rabolila. This misplaced concern for the family, in the period of elections, is clearly indicative of a serious lack of concern to the Rabolila family and relatives in this hour of pain and suffering. We would not be surprised to see these parties chasing ambulances and hearses in our

townships attempting to turn each fatality into an electioneering rally. The statement further says that the Municipalities in Sedibeng will, in conjunction with the Rabolila family and relatives, respect the family’s right to mourn and lead the funeral arrangements, provide whatever assistance the family may require to ensure that the dignity of the Rabolila family is intact.

“In this manner, we will not be drawn into any activity, by omission or commission and design, which seeks to turn this sad passing into a political circus. We call on all political parties to refrain from trampling on the dignity of the Rabolila family during this tragic period, it ends. The deceased will be buried on Saturday, February 15 in Ficksburg at 10:00.

Members of the public help Lerata Tladi who was gunned down by unknown people du ring a service delivery protest in Boiketlong last Wednesday. Inset: Lerata Tladi (26) who was shot dead during a basic service delivery protest.

Mother and child killed in crash

EVATON. - A government vehicle with registration G 666 G allegedly killed two people in a car crash on the Randfontein Road on Sunday night. The accident happened around 22:00 (10pm) when Malefu Putlano, a 29-yearold mother, and her daughter Ntswaki Putlano (4) were crossing the road from Evaton to Evaton Extension 15. They were killed by the allegedly speeding car. First on the scene was Tsatsi Tseke from Thetha FM, who says he has never seen an accident more horrific. “I was shocked. I have never seen an accident so horrific. The child and the mother were metres away from each other. The guy could only have been speeding, said Tseke. Little Ntswaki died on the scene while Malefu was critical. She was rushed to hospital with broken bones and severe head injuries. Some community members feel that lo-

cal government is doing nothing to control the mayhem afflicting the area. They claim that it is not the first accident that has occurred on the same spot. The last accident also claimed people’s lives. “We are now witness again to the same kind of horror. Family member Te-

boho Putlano confirms that Malefu died in hospital on Monday. “It’s very sad that Malefu has left us. We hope justice will take its course. The way our family members were taken is unfair,

Vaal Mall Expansion challenged Moleboheng Chaha

VANDERBIJLPARK. - Vaal Mall manager Jacque Mizen graciously received and signed a memorandum handed in by the South African National Civic Organisation (SANCO) chairman Motsamai Maphalla during a march on Tuesday morning. The peaceful march was attended by about 40 people, mostly made up of the region’s youth, who demanded jobs from the upcoming Vaal Mall expansion project. Mizen stated that he would read what was written in the memorandum and report to SANCO Vaal within this week. The memorandum stipulated that Vaal Mall management had a week to report to them. Among the demands in the SANCO memorandum were that Vaal Mall create an economy that creates more jobs and ensures greater equity in the sharing of growth, improving the living conditions of ‘our communities’ and ensuring that Vaal Mall Expansion complies with statutory requirements such as Black Economic Empowerment, BEE. “Having heard that there will be further development with regards to the mall, we are urging management to let that development benefit the people coming from this region.

Another demand is that Vaal Mall plough back into the community by investing in the young people that come from this community,” Maphalla stated adding that the mall

should establish partnerships that help grow Small, Medium and Micro Enterprises (SMMEs) that exist in the region. ” Mizen said, “Right now we are not going

to say anything to the media, but we are going to be releasing a press statement in our feedback to the memorandum that we have received.”

Sedibeng ready for the polls Moleboheng Chaha

SEBOKENG. - The South African national elections are set for May 7 of 2014. As they head for the polls, many South Africans will remember fallen icon Nelson Mandela who, along with others, fought the country into democracy. This year marks the first time South Africans will vote without Tata Mandela. Sedibeng MMC Infrastructure Water and Electricity and Ward 34 Councillor Nomvula Thulo led by example last week at the last IEC (Independent Electoral Commision) public registration weekend. Thulo made it her mission to visit the various voting stations within her ward to determine how the turnout of the registrations would be. The past week was announced as the last chance for the public to come on board and register and for others to come forward and check their statuses. Thulo says, “I came here today to check my name. I am very happy about the turnout of the IEC. I have been to the other voting stations and people have really been coming in large numbers.” Thulo says she believes that voter education plays a large role in instilling the importance of voting in people. “Especially looking at the 1994 elections: people should recall where we have come from and start to exercise their right to vote. If you do not vote, you are taking away your right to be part of the decision-making process.” Thulo concluded.

It seems that many South Africans are rea dy for the polls. This became apparent when many people flocked to the various voting stations to register to cast their vo tes. MMC Nomvula Thulo (middle) takes a photo with some of the youth from her ward. Photo: Moleboheng Chaha.

9R_Na\ @R_R_\ In African tradition when a man divorces a wife he is not obliged to support her, in life or in death unless there is some sort of agreement between the two parties. The only people that he is required to take care of are the offspring born out of the whole association, that is, if they are his. I was quite puzzled

It was long over, mos! by the comments that came from people, many women, following the reading of the will of former president Nelson Mandela. Many felt that his former wife and comrade Winnie Mandela deserved a certain piece of the ‘pie’, I begged to differ. I begged to differ and proclaimed that the former president had no obligation whatsoever to leave his former wife anything, as a song goes ‘whatever they had, they had’. Yes, the former first lady had been there through thick and thin for the former president, she was there to keep the fires

burning while the old man was incarcerated, but I ask you to lie to yourself and say this was not her obligation. She was indeed supposed to take care of the young and make sure that she held that family together. After all this was still her husband and those were her children too. It does not make sense then that some argue that she deserved a portion of the old man’s wealth. She deserves nothing. Whatever she was supposed to get she got when they divorced. The only person that the old man was, rightfully so,

supposed to have made provision for are his current wife and children and perhaps as he did, his grandchildren. Being the strong person that she is and knowing of both Western and African tradition ‘Mam’Winnie has never tried to speak about the will. She has never tried to contest it and that for me shows that I am correct she knows what is the right thing to do. As a matter of fact the couple were long over mos! So what is the noise about? Just my opinion. Lerato...

The Midvaal and Emfuleni Local Municipalities commit themselves to the transition process Lerato Serero

SEDIBENG.- Municipal Demarcation Board Chairperson (MDB) Landiwe Mahlangu last week met with Emfuleni Local Municipality Executive Mayor, Councillor Greta Hlongwane and discussed the outline of the integration plan process and addressed unresolved issues related to the deMidvaal and Emfuleni municipalities with the Sedibeng District Municipality in the formation of a category A municipality. A statement issued by the MDB says that the Emfuleni Mayor Councillor Greta Hlongwane confirmed her support for the MDB’s decision on the amalgamation and is ready to participate in the transition process once the Gauteng MEC for Local Government and Housing Ntombi

Mekgwe has put in motion the structure. Earlier on Monday, Mahlangu met with Midvaal Local Municipality Executive Mayor Councillor Bongani Baloyi where they discussed a number of issues related to the determination made by the Board regarding the merger of municipalities within the Vaal area into forming a metropolitan municipality. According to Mahlangu, his meeting with Midvaal Executive Mayor, Councillor Bongani Baloyi went well and the Midvaal Mayor indicated that the municipality will participate in the transition process of amalgamating with the other municipalities affected by the Board’s decision. He however stressed that as a municipality they still reserved their right to challenge whatever decision they do not agree with.

SEDIBENG STER

I don’t remember a ‘football funeral’

They say football is dead in Sedibeng, but Shooting From The Hip disagrees completely. As a matter of fact, football is and never will be dead in this region. The only people who are ‘dead’ while they’re alive are football administrators here. Development coaches should not be telling youngsters that football in this region is dead. That would mean only that development coaches have thrown in the towel. It is not even true that the standard of football has dropped! The only problem with our football is that we are still slavishly following the old system of doing things. Some develop-

ment coaches and administrators are not aware that football has changed - and very fast. In case you’re not aware, there is a lot of talent in this region, but the only thing lacking is FOOTBALL BRAINS amongthose who run the sport. They have run out of ideas and now they say our football is ‘dead.’ There is nothing like ‘football is dead.’ Only people can be ‘dead.’ Shooting From The Hip doesn’t remember attending a FOOTBALL’s funeral. No! The only funerals I go to every weekend are those of football administrators, not of football as a sport. Mind you, those who claim football is dead in this region are those who don’t know the

history or background of this region in terms of football. The fact that Vaal Professionals no longer exist doesn’t mean that football in Sedibeng is dead. Case in point, how many players from this region played for Vaal Professionals while the team still campaigned in top flight football? A few. The likes of Phiri Tsotetsi, Steve “Chippa” Lekoelea, Joseph “China” Masondo, were playing for Johannesburg teams despite the fact that there was a professional team in this region. Our football is not dead, but development coaches and football administrators in this region are. It is sad to see.

Swimming lessons for township kids Zacharia Nale

EVATON. - For the past three years Sello Padi has been developing swimming in Sedibeng as Swimming South Africa Provincial Liaison Officer. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sports, Padi says even though his contract has expired, he still develops swimming in Sedibeng through Learn to Swim and Water Safety programmes. According to Phadi, the programme is in partnership with the Emfuleni Local Municipality under the leadership of Nyangaphi Malise, who is the sport officer at the municipality. The programme takes place at the SE2 swimming pool, Sharpeville, Saul Tsotetsi, and Shakespear swimming pools on Saturdays. Phadi says he is grateful for the support he receives from the municipality and individuals such as Lazarus Koatla. “Emfuleni Local Municipality has been helping us with transportation of kids from various places to the pools and back home on weekends and also during public holidays. We have 60 kids from Evaton West community and 12 learners who attend classes at local schools on weekends,” says Phadi. These are some of the kids who come for swimming lessons every Saturday.

The multi talented Moalusi on the way up Zacharia Nale

VANDERBIJLPARK. - Oratile Moalusi (19) is one of the most multi-talented youngsters to have emerged from the Sedibeng region to date. This Suiderlig High School Grade 12 learner excels in both Rugby and Athletics. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sports, Moalusi says he specialises in both sporting codes. This well-built but soft-spoken runner believes that running is his favourite sport, taking into consideration his achievement. Having said this, however, Moalusi has clinched provincial colours in Rugby and Athletics. In 2010 he qualified for the World Youth Games but failed to take part in the event due to financial challenges. Last year he registered a Best Personal time of 47:47 in the 4000m. ‘Many people advise me to focus more on rugby because of my physique but I always tell them I can also run. I achieved more in Athletics, but for now I will concentrate on both of them until I decide. In the meantime, I’m enjoying both sporting codes,” says Moalusi.

Sebokeng Ajax in relegation blues? Zacharia Nale

SEDIBENG. - The newly promoted Sebokeng Ajax FC is finding it hard in the Safa Sedibeng SAB League. This Sebokeng-based side suffered a 2-0 defeat against fellow struggler The Birds FC at Shakespeare Stadium on Sunday. When the team was promoted to the SAB League there was lot of expectation. However, it never rains but pours for Ajax. The club not only struggles to collect points, but also seems to have difficulty coping with the demands of the SAB League. As if this is not enough, the team had no reserves on the bench and fortunately enough there were no forced substitutions as no player was seriously injured during the game. The score could have been worse, but their opponents were wasted in front of goals. As the situation stands, Club Manager/Coach Master Zondo is considering a change of his home-ground venue. Ajax used Shakespeare Stadium as their home ground, but is now considering moving back to Sebokeng where his team is based. He says this is costing his teams. “We intend to play our game at the Saul Tsotetsi Sports Complex in Zone 14 because we are close to the venue. It becomes difficult for us to play all our games away. Look, our team is based in Zone 12 and we play our home game in Vanderbijlpark,” he concludes. Meanwhile, Vaal Milano FC is current SAB League log leader after humiliating Real Barcelona 5-1 in an entertaining match played at Shakespeare on Saturday. The youthful Milano started the game like a house on fire, attacking their opponents from all angles for the better part of the game.

der new management and is run entirely privately for the benefit of the schools. The Vaal River Soccer League is a department which falls under Vaal Youth Football Development (VYFD). Vaal Youth Football Development focuses on all aspects of football and is thriving to implement and improve structures within football in the Vaal Triangle. This structure was started by Tyrone Koller who has experience running Ajax Soccer Schools as well as various development structures. Passion for the game is the main driving force behind this

Does Safa Sedibeng still exist? Zacharia Nale

SEDIBENG.- Safa Sedibeng is nonexistent and Sedibeng Ster Sports has learned that it is almost three to five months since the executive committee held a meeting. Sedibeng Ster Sports has learned that the last time the executive committee held a meeting was prior to the Safa national election which saw Danny Jordaan elected Safa President. The good news is that football activities are taking place despite the fact that no executive committee seems to exist. Safa Sedibeng League Coordinator Beauty Molise and Star Hlongwane (Safa Regional Secretary) seem to be the people who are hands-on in the day-to-day running of the association when it comes to administration. According to an informed source, Safa President Xolani Mtumtum hardly set foot in the Safa Sedibeng office after elections in September last year. Sedibeng Ster Sports has it on good authority that the last time the executives met was between July and August of 2013. However, the meeting did not serve its purpose, as it was about the Safa national elections, to say the least. This was confirmed to Sedibeng Ster Sports by Hlongwane - whose confirmation made it clear that that the last time an executive committee meeting took place was last year. According to Hlongwane they have been calling for a meeting, but with no success. However, Hlongwane was positive they will soon call a meeting. He revealed to Sedibeng Ster Sports that, last year, they did not close the year as they usually do. “It is true that the last time we had an executive meeting was last year before the Safa national election, and after the election, we never met. I’m quite aware of this because - now and again - one has to answer the question from members who want to know wif the executive committee still exists. But I’m convinced that this will happen soon because there are programmes we must discuss - like, for example - Gauteng Future Champions,” he concluded.
