SEBOKENG.- It is sheer luck that a Zone 12 Sebokeng woman and her two children, aged four and two, survived a blaze that razed their two-roomed shack in the early hours of Monday last week. According to Thenjiwe Maseko she and her children were not in the shack when the landlord noticed that it was on fire in the early hours while going to relieve herself at the outside lavatory. Maseko says she believes that the fire was started by her former boyfriend as he had apparently been sending her unpleasant and distasteful messages after she decided to part ways with him following a disastrous relationship and in the process, the young mother says he had also informed

one of his friends of his intention to kill her. On the day of the fire Maseko had taken the children to his (the former boyfriend) family home and she had visited with her friends leaving the shack empty. Following the fire Maseko apparently found an empty, burnt-out plastic bottle that smelled of petrol near the razed shack which she believes is the source of the fire. “It is just luck that no one was inside the shack or we would have been talking about something else right now. “ I need help please as I am not employed and I have lost everything. I also need thorough investigations to be made so that the culprit can be brought to book,” the distraught Maseko told Sedibeng Ster. Money, official documents for

both her and the children and other household items were burnt to ashes in the blaze. Local businessman Apollo Sandamela implores business people to come together to help the destitute Maseko. “We need to come together and do something for this young lady and the children,” he says. “I need help to start my life afresh, I have nothing left. The clothes that I am wearing and those that my children are wearing are the only things that we have left,” pleads Maseko who adds that Police told her that they are investigating and are also awaiting the fire and rescue reports. The Emfuleni Local Municipality MMC for Public Safety Veli Mcera has pledged his support.

PROF KHAN / MAMA AYO Enemies Came To Confess to Me

After many years of unhappy marriage, living in pain everyday. Pastors were praying for me but no difference. Another day I heard from Radio & in news papers that there is a professor, who helped my friend’s son, he was addicted to drugs, I started to attend to him, he checks by using water in a bowl and mirror. After only one week my enemies came to me to confess, is when I saw my husband’s girlfriend in the mirror.

Parolee arrested for similar offence VANDERBIJLPARK.- An ex-convict was arrested just two weeks within his release in Vanderbijlpark recently. The members of the Vanderbijlpark Detectives Unit are excelling in their duties and arresting hardened criminals in an effort to bring them to justice. Recently they

succeeded in arresting house robbery suspects within two days of the incident at the plots around Vanderbijlpark. It is alleged that the suspects (31), (25) and (24), went to the house on the plots with the knives to rob, on their arrival they robbed stabbed the owners of the house and ended up ra-

ping their daughter. They fled the scene with clothing they took in the house. Following thorough investigations the suspects were arrested soon after the incident. Police spokesperson Getrude Makhale says that it is disturbing that one of the suspects is on parole and he had been arrested for a similar offence before.

‘Down with violence’, gangs told Mduduzi Mathebula

SEBOKENG. – ‘Wrong turned to right’ when a comprehensive meeting was held at the Zone 7 Stadium recently. This saw controversial and notorious groups (Wrong Turn, DF, Hala Backs, and West Coast) joining in an agenda to create peace. Zone 7 and Eatonside residents were lashed with violence over the past year when an infamous group, Wrong Turn, apparently provoked violence. However, many other groups were then formed which turned the area into the most feared place ever. Vicious incidents occurred, but the community stood together and reclaimed pride and peace.

On Sunday these groups met for the first time in peace, under the watchful eye of the community, Local Ward Councillor Lahliwe Rapapadi and Evaton SAPS. During the tense meeting the group’s leaders vowed to support peace, promising to the multitude to down war tools and restore dignity. They also asked for support from the community to see how they could help stop this madness. Emfuleni Local Municipality Community Safety MMC Veli Mcera asked the community to make use of government institutions. “The Youth Desk is created for young people to manage each other and deal with each other’s issues as young peers,” he said.

Unchained from drug addiction Moleboheng Chaha

SEDIBENG. - The saying that ‘it takes a village to raise a child’ was powerfully exampled when numerous parents flocked to Nongazi Mkhaliphi’s home in Zone 10 to find out how to help kids with drug addiction, especially to ‘nyaope’. Mkhaliphi last month told Sedibeng Ster how her son overcame his addiction to nyaope and how she wanted to help send other kids to rehabilitation to help them like she helped

her son. Following the article, many parents contacted Mkhaliphi to ask for assistance. Others called to offer a helping hand. “I am glad to report that a new NGO, registered with the Department of Social Development, has been born following discussions with some community members who share the same sentiments with me. VUSA (Vaal Unchained against Substance Abuse) is the name of the new organisation which, through counselling, mentorship and skills development, will help in the fight against drug addiction and substance abuse within the Vaal region.” Some of the members are former addicts and have undergone rehabilitation for drug addiction. Organisation chairperson Tselane Mogopodi says, “I am tired of seeing children die because of nyaope; hence my eagerness to help them. I urge the government to help us with office space as we would like to start working immediately. An empty school will do. All we want is to help these poor kids” Mokgopodi concludes.

SEBOKENG. - Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader commander-inchief Julius Malema said his party is proud to associate itself with the Boiketlong informal settlement. “We are not ashamed of the poor. Your pain is our pain,” he said. Malema said the EFF knows what it is like to live in poverty and go to bed on an empty stomach. Malema first visited the family of the late Lerata Rabolila (28) to pay condolences before addressing residents at an open soccer field on Monday. Malema told the family that they (EFF) will make sure the suspects are brought to book. Rabolila was recently gunned down during a service delivery protest in Sebokeng. He was buried at his home in Meqheleng, Ficksburg, over the week-

end. Sedibeng District Municipality (SDM) Executive Mayor Simon Mofokeng and the residents of Boiketlong attended the funeral service. The SDM had arranged the buses to transport mourners to Meqheleng. Meanwhile on Monday Malema told the residents that the father (EFF) of orphans has arrived and it will never abandon them. He said the ruling party had abandoned former President Nelson Mandela’s vision. “The community is still in pain, living in shacks after 20 years of democracy. Rabolila was killed for asking for water, basic services and a dignified life. The killer was provided with an R5 rifle. Police keep saying they are investigating, appealing to the community to help bring the perpetrators to book. This is being used as a scapegoat,” he said.

BOIPATONG. - Boipatong Memorial and Youth Centre gives members of the public the opportunity to object to erection of a centre that exhibits the history of Boipatong and its notorious massacre. Centre spokesperson Bongani Dlamini said the building has been completed. The process of generating and organising the exhibitions has started. He said things like photographs, newspaper articles, T-shirts, shoes, Identity books, birth certificates of those taken by the massacre, political documents, posters and any-

thing that carries the memory of political resistance of the people of Boipatong and the massacre. “Objects and items could be brought to the memorial centre during the week. They will be photographed so that the owners can take back the originals,” he said. Objects like furniture and property damaged during the massacre can be registered and a photographer will visit the home to take pictures of those things. 9R_Na\ @R_R_\ There is a famous (my favourite) singer in the country who sings a song with lines that go something like this: ‘It’s either you love me or you leave me alone’. This past week I fell in love with our Public Protector Advocate Thuli Madonsela who, despite facing people that mock, despise, demean and belittle her name, continues to do her thing, namely her job.

SEDIBENG STER

The PHDs (Pull Her Downs) of this world Madonsela revealed what many of us have suspected of all along, that the Public Broadcaster, SABC, is not up to standard. Apparently SABC COO Hlaudi Motsoeneng doesn’t even have a matric certificate. According to Madonsela’s report Motsoeneng filled in made-up symbols and promised the certificate even though he knew he did not have it. Madonsela found that Motsoeneng irregularly and rapidly increased the salaries of various staff members, resulting in the state broadcaster footing an unprecedented salary bill-escalation of R29 million. My argument here is that at some work places (put the emphasis on ‘some’), mostly in government, some people have been done

favours. A person that only deserves to be a miner wearing a hardhat and gumboots at Marikana finds himself among the elite and then starts bragging about the experience or the service that he has. Mind you, there is nothing wrong with being a miner, but I say that in my eyes ‘an empty tin will always be an empty tin’ - no matter the favour. It is truly disgraceful that the national broadcaster has for years been feeding us ‘ama repeat’ and our pleas have fallen on deaf ears. It is no suprise to realise that that there was not even a matric there to know what qualifies to be fresh and of public consumption. Big ‘ups’ to Advocate Madonsela for continuing to do what is right. She should continue

The Silo Christian Centre for Skills and Remedial last week welcomed new students and celebrated Agape Day, the day of celebrating the love of God right before Valentine’s Day. Photo: Moleboheng Chaha.

19 February - 25 February 2014

SEBOKENG. - Ever since it was founded in 2005, the centre has received no sponsors. This was said by former teacher Likeleli Molefi, founder of the Silo Christian Skills and Remedial Centre. The revelation came during an event held recently in which Molefi welcomed the new 2014 students. Also on the day, the centre celebrated Agape Day, which is seen as the day to celebrate God’s love. “Today we are celebrating the love of god. God has always been the foundation of the centre. It is because of Him that we are here today,” says Molefi. The centre has to date improved in skills development, offering various certificate courses to disadvantaged youth and unemployed peope in fields such as catering, art, fashion design and interior decorating. A new student Maletsatsi Malatji says: “I did not

complete my high school education because I was ashamed of the fact that one of my hands is not normal. Other kids at school used to call my hand “monkey hand” and when I couldn’t take it anymore, I decided to drop out.” Says Molefi: “This centre is a place of hope for people who have given up on life. We give them a new lease on life by making them realise their dreams and reaching their potential.” Molefi adds that the centre deals with production and stuggles financially when it comes to buying the materials needed to do the practical side of the courses. She concludes: “Acquiring funding has been one of the biggest challenges, but it has not discouraged the centre and its volunteers in any way. Some volunteers have worked here from the beginning and have never received a salary, but still come here every day to help develop the community.”

Together with the members of his association ‘Ho Lekane’ Community projects they teach young people to do things for themselves. “When one is in jail you learn a lot and I decided to learn to do things with my hands so that when I come out I can use my time to change lives,” says Mokhele. He adds that the crafts that they are making are sold to sustain the organisation in other projects they are involved in. “Young people , particularly school children should be dedicated to their studies and focus on making their futures a success as no one will do things for them. SHARPEVILLE. - The members of Tough Crew Vivian Ntshala, Thabiso Ramathesele and Granny Ramokgadi will once again bring fire to the Sharpeville Hall this Saturday when they host the annual Mr and Miss Sharpeville. This comes after the great succes of the very first pageant in 2013. “Our aim is to bring the community of Sharpeville together through positivity. We saw this as an opportunity to bring parents, teachers and kids together in one venue,” says Ntshala. “The arts are busy dying out as a result of negative things that are currently taking place within society. Our aim is to revive this spirit.

We want to be positive role models to young kids who are growing up in these bad circumstances. You do not have to do bad things to be cool. Kids can still dengage in many activities and have fun.” Ntshala concludes. Over 150 pairs donated to shoeless Mduduzi Mathebula

ge to the hopeless and clothes to the naked is led by Khekhe, a young man who created the foundation years back in the hope of helping the community. Today all he does is to smile over his hard work and at his team. Over 150 pupils received school shoes on Thursday, though this initially seemed impossible but which was surmounted by the foundation team and its solidarity and labour. Children from various schools across Sedibeng region were called on board to become beneficiaries. Khekhe says this event was made possible through Tiro Funerals, the Mkhabela Foundation, Arcelor Mittal Science Centre, and the Department of Arts and Culture. “I was not born with a silver spoon in my mouth, but I managed to make things happen for myself. There’s a bigger picture than what you are going though. You can be the best; you may want to be. Just let no situation demoralise you. Stand up and hold your head high,” these were words of Khekhe during his speech at the event. After long and entertaining speeches children were then handed their shoes, smiles transformed their faces. The Toughest Young Minds Drama Group also presented a thought-provoking and illustrative play on abstinence as a positive, conscious decision that can keep the dreams of a young girl alive. Tseke gave a compelling, direct talk to the girls with an emphasis on sexual conduct. Speakers from Mahareng and Lebohang Secondary Schools were selected to present a speech under the theme “My body, my future, my life.” The programme was co-sponsored by the Gauteng Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts & Culture and Social Development. Love Life and the Sharpeville Aerobics Club were among contributors of giveaways. The programme also enjoyed a lot of support from local schools, organisations and the community of Sharpeville and Tshepiso. “In a society where social ills are addressed by the implementation of social programmes that ignore morality as the centre of a healthy state of affairs, Virgin Ya Kasi encourages girls to take pride in a strong value system,” explains Lesito. The day ended with girls pledging to remain virgins for the next 10 years or more.

SHARPEVILLE. - The Boitshepiville Youth Development Centre is known for its Life Skills and End User Computer Programme. Recently in Tshepiso one of the organisation’s unique programmes took centre stage Amatshitshi ase lokishini (Virgins Ya Kasi). It is a campaign that encourages young girls and women between 12 and 21 to remain virgins for as long as possible. The event drew teenage girls from nearby schools and other organisations around Boitshepiville. “While many popular campaigns sidetrack strong values while addressing the issue of teenage pregnancy by encouraging girls to prevent pregnancy by using contraception, Virgin Ya Kasi prefers abstinence,” says Teboho Lesito chairman and founder of the organisation. The campaign also asserts that sexually transmitted diseases are best prevented through abstinence. A talk was given by Tsatsi Tseke from Thetha FM. Master-of-ceremony for the day Keabecoe Moiloa and her crew from Love Life, kept the teenagers entertained and informed on issues of sexuality.

There is something missing from our football – rivalry. This is especially in derbies. In the recent form, derbies are a thing of the past with teams, supporters and events. Shooting From The Hip always attends the SAB League match in this region and, when it is a derby match, one can’t even feel it or notice it. It is just like another game. Shooting From The Hip will tell you exactly why these rivalries died out from our football. It is because most clubs, especially PSL

Rivalry dead in our football clubs, share sponsorship like sharing women - and yet those players are still expected to play their hearts out? Never! Here at home, when I was watching a SAB League match this weekend, Shooting From The Hip noticed that the coaches are too close, too ‘chummy’. That’s why those tense derbies are missing. The fact of the matter is that, recently, it has become about there being only about three points at stake. It is no longer about the pride of representing a certain area. In the past, local teams played to represent their area. For example, in the past, there is no way the supporters or fans would accept if their Evaton-based team lost against their

neighbouring team. Never! But having said this – there is one coach in the SAB League Shooting From The Hip believes still has this rivalry mentality. The motormouth Sebokeng Real Barcelona FC head coach Dingaan ‘Dicks’ Tshabalala, he seems to still be the only coach in this league who speaks his mind when he talks of his opposition teams. Shooting From the Hip likes the confidence of the man despite his team recently being beaten 5-0 by Vaal Milano. His arrogance is something missing in our football. He reminds Shooting From The Hip of the great Mohhamed Ali, who scared hell out of an opponent before a fight.

We miss those characters. We miss rivalry in our football. The local soccer fans have been staying away from soccerfields because everyone is a friend of everyone, even in the field of play. To show that that rivalry is dead in our football, you will see opposition teams together before their big game. In the past, this was not the case. Players were so focused before any game and were not allowed to be seen with anyone. Shooting From The Hip would like to encourage Tshabalala to continue to shoot from his mouth because some of us enjoy when opposition coaches are at each other before a game. Bring it on, Mr Motor-Mouth!

BOIPATONG. - Two former Jomo Cosmos Football Club players Mokete Tsotetsi and Aaron ‘Mbazo’ Mokoena are now passing on their football knowledge to local youngsters. Even though no official announcement

has yet been made, Sedibeng Ster Sports spotted the two former soccer stars conveying their skills to local soccer teams recently. Mokoena, a former Bafana Bafana member, helped the Vodacom League team – Vaal Legends FC - while Tsotetsi coached SAB League team The Birds FC.

To make things interesting it should be noted that both players started their careers in Boipatong before they joined Cosmos. Mokoena had a successful football career when he went to play overseas for Ajax Amsterdam after he had impressed in his debut season in PSL.

The man known as ‘Mbazo’ commands a lot of respect from up-and-coming soccer stars in this region. They recognise what he achieved as a soccer player at a young age. Mokoena started his football career with the now-defunct Boipatong Real Rangers before he was spotted by soccer legend Jomo Sono who immediately signed this hard-tocrack defender. However, Mokoena is not only a former soccer player, he’s involved in the community. He stages junior soccer tournaments through his Aaron Mokoena Foundation. Tsotetsi’s rise to stardom came when he joined the Glamour Boys’ Kaizer Chiefs from Cosmos. He was one of the most hard-tackling defenders in PSL but he did not have a successful spell with Chiefs.

SEDIBENG. - While there are those who claim football is dead in Sedibeng – there are those spend sleepless nights dreaming up ways to improve the standard in this region despite the negativity among football administrators. Emfuleni Local Football Association (ELM) chairman Philip Ndlovu is an upand-coming football administrator who has proven beyond doubt that he has football development interest in his heart. Ndlovu was elected chairman of the new committee last year and he has performed miracles despite criticism from his detractors. Firstly, last year he organised an administration workshop for Emfuleni Local Football Association (ELFA) teams. The workshop was conducted by former Bafana Bafana team manager Sipho Nkumane. To make things interesting, it was the first time in the history of local football that - a month before the Promotion League kick-off - the fixtures were already out. Sedibeng Ster Sports is in possession of the 2013/2014 Promotion League fixture which kicks off on March 1. In the past, the Promotion League in this region started behind schedule every season. However, since Ndlovu took over, this has become a thing of the past. The league consists of 12 teams and those teams. Those teams who failed to honour their league matches (by turning up) have since been kicked out of the league. In a heart-to-heart interview with Sedibeng Ster Sports, Ndlovu says he is sick and tired of people who just talk but do nothing for football. He believes the time for cheap talk is over. He told Sedibeng Ster Sports that there are people who work with him behind the scenes to make sure football is played in this region. “I’m not the popular person right now because of the decision I took to move our football forward. There are people who help me to take our football to the next level and they sacrifice everything for football. Many peo-

ple might say I do things alone but I can tell you there are people in the background who help me. They just don’t want to see their names in the newspapers like other football ad-

ministrators in this region,” says Ndlovu. Ndlovu warns those Promotion League teams that any team that doesn’t honour fixtures will be in serious trouble.

SEDIBENG. - Safa Sedibeng SAB League is becoming more interesting. Following mixed results over the weekend, Vaal Milano FC has overtaken VUT FC at the top of the log just in goal differences. The good news for Vaal Milano FC is that they still have two games in hand after they played nine games, while VUT FC played 11 games. ‘The Students’ occupy the third spot on the log, while Real Hearts shot to second place after beating Ghetto Seven FC 2-1 in the league match played at Shakespeare Stadium on Saturday. This Heidelberg-based side is among the teams that challenge for the league title. They are the defending champions of the Safa Sedibeng SAB League. Log leader Vaal Milano FC moved to the summit of the log after beating the relegation-threatened Reki Manyora 2-1 in another

league match which forms part of a doubleheader at Shakespeare Stadium on Saturday. Manyora FC languishes at the bottom of the log with three points from 11 outings. They lost eight matches and drew two. This is the one expected to challenge the league title. However, they ended up on the wrong side of the log. United Scientists FC also languish second from the bottom of the log with eight points from 11 games. The rest of the weekend results: Sebokeng Real Barcelona 3-1 Sebokeng Ajax FC Sailor FC 1-1 Try Me Again FC United Scientist 1-1 RESA FC Hillside United 0-2 Central United FC Verona FC 1-2 The Birds FC A Real Hearts FC player is on attack during his teams’ 21 victory against Ghetto Se ven FC at Shakespeare Stadium on Satur day.

VANDERBIJLPARK. - The Emfuleni Local Football Association’s junior league (u/13 and u/15) in Stream A got off to a good start at Shakespeare Stadium on Saturday. It was a display of the best talent with more than 300 youngsters showcasing their best. For the first time in the history of football in this region the junior league started before the Promotion League, thanks to association chairman Philip ‘Mgushi’ Ndlovu. Excitement was written all over the faces of those youngsters and development coaches. The day’s programme was coordinated by Lehlohonolo Masahrole and Tebello Kheswa. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sports, Ndlovu said he is happy that the junior league has finally started with their league programme. He says Stream B will kick off this weekend. “I can now sleep peacefully because the junior soccer league has kicked off. I want to thank the development coaches for their patience. This is the beginning of good things to come in this region. I also want to thank Sedibeng Ster for the role it plays in the development of sports in this region. If it wasn’t for the newspaper I don’t think we could have achieved some of the things as sports people in this region,” says Ndlovu. Under-15 league coordinator Tebello Kheswa says he was happy with the positive response from teams. He says only two teams failed to honour their fixtures but the rest turned up. Meanwhile, this weekend all roads will lead to Boipatong Stadium. The rest of the weekend fixtures: U/15 Golden Eagles FC 2-0 (W/O) Veeniging Old Boys FC Tractor FC 3-2 Mighty Stars FC Vaal Milano FC 3-2 Atlehang FC Bophelong Milano FC 2-0 (W/O) Benfica FC Bophelong Milano 5-1 Liverpool FC Nale Academy 2-1 Italian Hunters FC U/13 Liverpool FC 1-0 Bophelong Mailano Golden Eagles 2-0 Nale Academy Italian Hunters FC 2-0 Vaal Milano FC
