‘Tiger’s eye’ for despairing woman Mduduzi Mathebula

SEDIBENG. - Puleng Mosola, a 35-year-old woman from Zamdela, Sasolburg and mother of one underwent eight operations recently after discovering that she had meningitis. This affected her brain, leading to a dramatic change and blindness in her left eye. The blinded woman searched far and wide for help and luckily bumped into the Tigers Biker Club from Sasolburg and the biker club made amends and vowed to help the despairing woman. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Tigers Biker Club Secretary Mapuleng Phosisi said that due to the legacy of the late founder and the president of the Tigers Biker Club Mzayifani Nosenga,a local businessman and avid motobiker who died last year they vowed to help knowing that if Nosenga was alive, he would help. According to a medical invoice the operation cost about R17 000. “As the Sasolburg branch we made means to raise the amount. Thank God the doctors gave us a discount, reducing the amount to R12 500. As we speak Mosola has a new eye and will undergo treatment yearly,” says Phosisi. She adds that they are trying to build a house for Mosola since she’s unemployed. Mosola was very ecstatic and overwhelmed by the operation and help she received from the doctor and the Tigers Biker Club. “I thank God for letting me receive such love and support from my community. It is God’s merciful ways that made me meet such people who showed me love and care. I won’t forget all their efforts. May God bless them abundantly,” says Mosola. Tigers Biker Club asks for any help from the community to support Mosola. Left: Puleng Mosola needed major help for the opration on her left eye and got it through the Tigers Biker Club. Women’s Day by conducting an awareness campaign on rape focusing on boys. During the campaign one of the learners asked if it is possible that a boy can be raped. Captain Mahlatsi explained all the elements of rape and advised that the learners should come forward and report any incident of rape. After the campaign police received a complaint at the school about 16 boys who had been raped by their soccer team coach. The boys reported that their team coach would hold ‘soccer camps’ with them at his residential place in a back yard shack. After the soccer activities the coach would rape the victims. He would then threaten them by telling them if they reported him he will bewitch and kill them. 16 cases of rape were opened and registered at Oranjeville SAPS and dockets were referred to the Sasolburg Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit

Business robbery cross-fire holds Fokwane’s life at bay - indefinitely Mduduzi Mathebula

EVATON. - Eleven years ago Gcinumuzi Fokwane (39) was caught in a cross-fire. This has put his life on hold - indefinitely. The horrific part of Fokwane’s life is spending a decade in hospitals, undergoing several operations that have done nothing except keep him alive. “I was in a shootout at work during a business robbery. I was a petrol attendant when gunfire erupted. Unfortunately I was hit right in my neck. The bullet cut my thoracic bone, which holds the spinal column. Ever since, I have been in and out of hospitals. I spent eight years in Kingston Hospital and was operated on more than 20 times. I just knew from there that my life would never be the same again,” says the wheelchair-bound Fokwane. Fokwane’s condition is weakening as his wounds became septic. He has two children Mzwandile (17) who is in matric, and S’fiso (11) both living with their mother who left him 5 years ago. “I have accepted my condition. I thank God for the life he has given me. Everything is working against me. My wife left with my children and my father has also left me like this and gone to Eastern Cape,” says Fokwane who lives with his mother and a care giver. Fokwane says that he wishes to have a house. Police interrupt ‘changing’ robber Lazarus Dithagiso

SEBOKENG. - A tip-off to Police by members of the public landed four heavily armed suspects behind bars. The mission of the suspects armed with an AK47 rifle, a 9mm pistol and ammunition - was to rob a petrol station but this was not accomplished. The suspects are behind bars after being arrested at Moshoeshoe Road on Monday. Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Mzimkulu Mthimkulu said suspects claiming to be from Soweto are charged with possession of illegal weapons. The weapons were found in more than two vehicles. Two of the vehicles with three different registrations

were confiscated and sent to Police vehicle storage. One suspect was pursued after he ran at a hair-cut container. He was spotted by onlookers but quickly undressed, changing from the clothes he was wearing. When Police arrived, he was busy cutting his hair. He told Police he was from Evaton but could not provide his physical address. Another suspect said he was on his way to work when he asked for a car hike. Onlookers suspect an inside job at the petrol station. The garage has been regarded as being at high risk of robbery. Police are still on the heels of the other suspect, who is still at large. The suspects will appear very soon in the Sebokeng Magistrates Court.

9R_Na\ @R_R_\ This eve of the 54th commemoration of March 21, formerly called Sharpeville Day, now known as Human Rights Day reminds us of who we are, where we come from and the strides we have made as a country. 21 March 1960 will for many South Africans forever remain Sharpeville Day - a day when police mowed down 69 unarmed people and injured more than 180 others who refused to carry the hated ‘dompas’ identity document that was meant only for black indigenous Africans. This is the time for us to sit back and reflect on the importance of what this means for us, however it is not only enough for us to just sit back and reflect on the importance of human rights. It is also simply not enough to reaffirm our support for the principles contai-

Always remember ned in the declaration of Human Rights. We need to recommit ourselves to human rights in a meaningful and practical way. We need to get back to basics of teaching moral values and tolerance for one another through education and religion. Since 1994, 21 March has been commemorated as Human Rights Day in South Africa and Sharpeville was the site selected by then-President Nelson Mandela for the signing into law of the Constitution of South Africa on December 10 of 1996. In 1998, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) found that the police actions constituted “gross human rights violations in that excessive force was unnecessarily used to stop a gathering of unarmed people. On March 21, 2002, the 42nd anniversary of the massacre, a memorial was opened by former President Nelson Mandela as part of the Sharpeville Human Rights Precinct. The Square, within Beaconsfield, Leslie, Merriman and Joubert Streets, was renamed ‘Constitution Square’ by former President Nelson Mandela on December 10, 1996. This was after he signed the South African Constitution into law in Sharpeville. The Square al-

Mofokeng announced the launch of a project titled ‘Constitutional Epochs’, which link events in the history of the Vaal to five constitutional moments in South African history. After his speech Mofokeng led a group of dignitaries and guests to the unveiling of a replacement plaque, which was originally unveiled by the late Mandela. The wreaths were laid at the foot of the Peace Monument. The location of two historical sites within one precinct makes Constitutional Square a unique and significant heritage site.

Three Rivers testing ground permanently closed

Mduduzi Mathebula

SEDIBENG.- The Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport would like to inform residents in the Sedibeng area about the perma-

nent closure of the Three Rivers Driving License Testing Centre in Vereeniging. This is a result of the department’s lease contract with the land owner at the centre co-

ming to an end on March 31. The department would like to assure community members that it remains committed to providing services to the people in the area and that the closure will not affect any bookings already made at the centre. Measures had already been put in place to deal with the closure with the last learners license test taking place on March 20. However, the Centre will remain open for collection of driving license cards, which had already been ordered until 31 March 2014. Those who are not able to collect their

cards within the prescribed period will be notified of the venues where they can collect their cards. Current staff members at the centre will be redeployed to other provincial DLTCs to further enhance service delivery at those centers. Seven sluice gates opened for floods

Lerato Serero

SEDIBENG.- Since the heavy downpours that have caused the high water levels in the Vaal Dam the Sedibeng Disaster Management and all the other relevant role players have been on high alert monitoring and evaluating the situation and flash flooding in risky areas such as Evaton, Sicelo, Muvhango, Khayelitsha, Brand Muller Road along the Vaal River, Golf Road, General Hertzog to ensure that proper and immediate response is effected. Sedibeng District Municipality (SDM) Acting Director of External Communications Lebo Mofokeng says that the Joint Operations Centre at the Vaal Technorama is also part of the level of readiness should the circumstances escalate. All stakeholders will be called to participate in the Joint Operations Centre should circumstances require. Communities at identified risk areas such as Muvhango, Sicelo, Tshepiso and Khayelitsha are also put on high alert through pamphlets, public education and the envisaged door-to-door information for community alertness. Disaster Management established a contingency plan specifically for floods,

which is constantly updated and reviewed based on the prevailing circumstances. The contingency plan can be activated at any given time when serious threats are iminent. The plan has been disseminated to all local municipalities within the region and as such will be jointly activated to effectively manage the situation. The Vaal Dam capacity is currently at 105.4% full. The dam is under pressure and the inflow of water into the dam is 1350 m3, with outflow of 970m3. This means that there is more water flowing into the dam than the water flowing out of the dam. There are currently 7 sluice gates opened to release water to ease the pressure of the dam. Mofokeng says that due to the opened sluice gates, the water level and flow of the Vaal River has risen drastically. Rivers feeding the Vaal River (Klipriver, Suikerbos and Rietspruit rivers) are also rising drastically. Currently the situation in identified flood-prone areas such as Sicelo, Tshepiso, Evaton, Blesbokspruit in Lesedi and Sea Point in Sharpeville is not yet extensively threatening as it is manageable and is constantly monitored.

South Africa to commemorate Human Rights Day 2014 in Sharpeville South Africans will commemorate the national Human Rights Day 21 March 2014 at George Thabe Cricket Pitch in Sharpeville, Gauteng Province. The theme for the year’s Human Rights Day is “Celebrating 20 years of changing lives through human rights”. President Jacob Zuma will speak at the event. The 1960s were characterised by systematic defiance and protest against apartheid and racism across the country. On March 21 1960, the community of Sharpeville and Langa townships, like their fellow compatriots across the country, embarked on a protest march against pass laws. The apartheid police shot and killed 69 of the protesters at Sharpeville, many of them shot while fleeing. Many other people were killed in other parts of the country. The tragedy came to be known as the Sharpeville Massacre and it exposed the apartheid government’s deliberate violation of human rights to the world. The democratic government declared March 21 Human Rights Day to commemorate and honour those who fought for our liberation and the rights we enjoy today. Our Constitution is hailed as one of the most progressive in the world. The Constitution is the ultimate protector of our Human Rights, which were previously denied to the majority of our people under Apartheid. We commemorate Human Rights Day to reinforce our commitment to the Bill of Rights as enshrined in our Constitution. These rights include: Equality – everyone is equal before the law and has the right to equal protection and benefit of the law. Human dignity – everyone has inherent dignity and have their dignity respected and protected. Freedom of movement and residence – everyone has a right to freedom of movement and to reside anywhere in the country. Language and culture – everyone has the right to use the language and to participate in the cultural life of their choice. Life - everyone has the right to life. Government will host various activities (www.dac.gov.za) throughout the Human Rights Month to remind all South African to continue working together to uphold the culture of human rights. Human Rights come with responsibilities and we all have the responsibility to build a society that respects the rule of law. Whether we are at the work place, within communities, at schools, or with our partners and children, we all need to demonstrate the kind of responsibility that we would like to see in our country’s future.

Roshnee will never be ruled by the devil Lazarus Dithagiso

ROSHNEE. – Say no to drugs! The community lambasts the drug problem in their area but they have confidently vowed to win the battle. Residents say they are on the verge of turning the area back into what it was a clean, drug-free society. Roshnee hosted a drug-awareness programme initiated by Idress Hansa last week. Ebrahim Gangat, programme director, said Roshnee used to focus on a clean slate against crime. “Our target is to make sure we join hands and secure a top flight talk with the Muslim community,” said Gangat. He praised the contribution of the community. “If the children are not taught to do something, they will fail to do anything. There’s no quick fix through drugs no matter how much money one has,” said guest speaker Rafiq Mayet, director of Magalies Health Centre, a rehab wing of the Crescent of Hope South Africa. The community gathered inside the Civic Centre Hall to share ideas and break the silence on how best they could help bring down the disease that has brought the community to its knees. The most talked about drugs were cocaine, crack, heroin, mandrax, crystal meth and ecstasy. “If we as the community don’t take a stand, the next generation will be totally lost. Once you take drugs, escaping death is not easy. Why start something that will destroy your life? “Substance abuse is not a disease, it is self-

inflicted. Drugs see only destruction, not race or colour. Children as young as six are used to transport drugs because the police never stop and search them. Drugs are 5% of a lifetime but 90% of a lifestyle,” explained Mayet. Speakers appealed to everyone to turn the drug awareness

campaign into a community project. Majid Badat took it upon himself to clean the streets with the help of the community. “This is the start of a huge battle against drugs. Islam has zero tolerance for any form of intoxicant and Roshnee is the same.“Roshnee is a small community that will never be

ruled by the devil,” said Badat. Hansa said Roshnee had fostered a group backed by Badat and working wonders to keep the area free of drugs. It was unanimously decided in the meeting that the group, called the ‘A’ Team’, resume their work.

The desks are named after Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu and are part of his 2015 campaign to provide 20 million African children with school desks by the end of 2015. The portable desks provide a stable work surface for disadvantaged schools that have little or no permanent facilities. “For Amway, it’s about more than just making a difference for one day. Principal of Kitso Primary School Tej Lefutso expressed his delight at the considerate donation given to his school by Amway. “From all the stakeholders of Kitso Primary School, thank you Amway from the bottom of our hearts, and for being considerate of our children. Midvaal hosts first-ever mayoral soccer challenge

MEYERTON. - Midvaal Local Municipality hosted its first Mayoral Soccer Challenge at the sport grounds in Sicelo recently. A total of eight 5-a-side teams competed for the trophy. Midvaal Mayor Bongani Baloyi together with MMCs Hartman, Botsoere, Pretorius and Ward Councillor Boland, welcomed the teams with the Mayor ceremoniously kicking off the ball to officially ‘open the games’. The Mayor’s idea behind hosting this event

was to create opportunities for local residents to showcase their sporting talents. The aim of this launch event is for this to be the start of more sporting opportunities for Midvaal residents. Despite the rainy afternoon, the teams persevered, and the mayor awarded the prizes at a ceremony held at the grounds late that afternoon. The winner of the day was the Blazers Football Club who received not only the

trophy but also kit items and prize money to spend on team costs. Several local companies including AfriGuard, Meyerton Spur and Oasis Water sponsored prizes, kit, refreshments and other equipment for the day, as part of their commitment to support initiatives in local communities. The municipality wants to thank the sponsors for their support in making this event a success.

SEDIBENG.- Gauteng Sports Awards are just around the corner MEC for Sports Arts, Culture and Recreation Lebohang Maile held a media launch recently at Sylvester Casino when he addressed all media houses on sports and what impact they would play towards the awards locally and nationally. The MEC was accompanied by 2014 Gauteng Sports Awards ambassadors William Lehong, Raylyn Anthoney, Caleb George, Mandla Mdakane, Lehlohonolo Majoro, Kwena Moabelo, Hlubi Mboya, Mpho Maboi and Boity Thulo. The event was embraced by high profile people who are keen and love sports in general. Maile says Gauteng has hosted a number of imperative global and cultural events which have helped to boost Gauteng’s economy and social cohesion. “We urge Gauteng to embark with us on this year’s awards and celebrate the contribution and recognise sporting heroes,” says Maile. He adds that the launch of the Gauteng Sport Awards in 2010 recognise and reward the province’s sports stars for their efforts to keep the passion of sport alive in the hearts of millions of South Africans through their efforts in local and international sporting events. Maile says, “These annual Awards honour individuals and teams that have excelled both on and off the field.” He further refers to Gauteng as home of many stadia and sporting grounds for opening and closing ceremonies and closing, namely 2012 FIFA World Cup , 2013 African Cup of Nations and the 2003 Cricket World Cup.

Maruma: a man with a mission Zacharia Nale

EVATON.- Thabo Maruma is a man on a mission to save promising soccer youngsters in Evaton West. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sports, Maruma says he is disturbed to see promising young soccer players playing soccer barefooted. “For the past ten years staying here I have been watching the boys playing soccer on the street with no soccer boots using their school shoes. To make it worse, these boys are talented but just need a leader and

motivation. I appeal to Evaton West and the Beverly Hills community to come on board to help these youngsters realise their dream of playing organised football,” says the emotional Maruma. Maruma says he made an effort to go to some people who donated trophies so that he can organise a soccer tournament for these youngsters and today he trains them as a team. He says he has been staying in the Vaal for the past 10 years and he asks the community to help him to take these boys away from the street and from drugs. He adds, “Vaal is a

place where most talented players come from, especially when you look in PSL. This region has potential but these boys have lost hope because no-one cares about them. I know there are teams and academies in the Vaal but the truth is not all of these boys are fortunate enough to play for them. We must have teams around the area that will develop these talents and take their careers to the next level. I challenge all the Evaton West and Beverly Hills community to come on board.”

SEDIBENG. - The Safa Sedibeng SAB League title might be decided this weekend when log leaders Real Hearts FC and Vaal Milano FC clash at the top of the table this weekend. Vaal Milano FC character will be tested when they travel to Heidelberg to play against Real Hearts FC at the Ratanda Stadium. This is one game that will break a camel’s back with both teams challenging for the league title. Milano FC are second on the log with 33 points while Real Hearts are third on the log with 32 points. This is one game that promises fireworks come Saturday. Real Hearts come into this encounter still licking their wounds after being beaten 3-0 by another

title chaser – Sebokeng Real Barcelona - at the Qedilizwe Artificial Turf in Evaton North on Saturday. It was raining goals at Shakespeare when Vaal Milano beat the struggling Sebokeng Ajax 5-1 in the one-sided Safa Sedibeng SAB League at the venue on Sunday. It was another ‘goals galore’ extravaganza at Isak Steyl Stadium when the top of the log VUT FC beat Central United 6-1 in the league match on Friday. The Students are topping the log with 35 points from 15 games. The rest of the weekend results: Sailor FC 1-1 The Birds FC Ghetto Seven FC 3-3 United Scientists FC Hillside United 1-1 Try Me Again FC Mighty Blues FC 2-2 RESA FC

Is soccer a poor black man’s sport? denied their children a lifetime opportunity to play for a junior national team. Parents must also be aware that in the five years to come, there might be no jobs in South Africa and the best these youngsters can do is to apply themselves to what they are good at which is playing soccer. Dear Parent, if you’re a lawyer or a doctor, don’t think your child is also interested in these professions. This is wrong thinking! It was a shame to see our squad represented by players who play only at schools because those who play competitive football every weekend did not have the right documents. It is not a secret. Many good players were left out because they did not have the relevant documents, to say the least. As many as four Sedibeng players were selected for the provincial team – Shooting From The Hip believes that we would have had more players in the provincial team if those good players had the required documents. Shooting From The Hip always preaches that there are some youngsters out there whose lives can change for the better through football. In fact, I know what I’m talking about because I was a footballer myself and I know what football can do for those who are talented. Shooting From The Hip’s message to parents is, wake up and smell the coffee!

Parents too must take the blame for the state of football in this region. This is not the first time Shooting From The Hip highlights the issue of parents who show a lack of interest in their children’s football careers. This is a serious concern because when their children play rugby or cricket the whole family comes to support him or her. Is this a slave mentality or is football a poor black man’s sport. You tell me! My point is that Safa Sedibeng’s region team was selected but most of the children did not have the required documents for them to be selected. It was disappointing when only less than 10 children turned up for trials because others did not have passports or IDs. Mind you, coaches have been pleading with parents to apply for these youngsters’ passports and/or IDs, but their pleas evidently fell on deaf ears. In case parents are not aware, they have

VANDERBIJLPARK.- Precisely four Safa Sedibeng players were selected for the Safa Provincial squad scheduled to take place in North West province at the end of the month. The four players were selected during the Safa region’s selection at Shakespeare Stadium on Saturday. The four Safa regions that participated in these trials were West Rand, Ekurhuleni, Safa Sedibeng, Safa Johannesburg, Tshwane including Kaizer Chiefs and Rosina Sedibane High School. The best talent was on display with Rosina Sedibane, Kaizer Chiefs, Safa Sedibeng and Ekurhuleni looking to be the top teams of the tournament

as they played exciting football. Themba Dlamini was at the helm of Safa Sedibeng coaching, while Master Zondo was team manager. Sedibeng Ster Sports journalist – Zacharia Nale - was among the selectors appointed by provincial chairman Anthony ‘Bull Dog’ Reeves. Speaking after the trials, Reeves said he was impressed with the standard of football displayed by the youngsters. This former Safa Sedibeng president says the future of this country looks bright. Even though many have lost confidence in South African football Reeves was optimistic that they are moving in the right direction.

“There is no doubt that this county is blessed with talent and these exciting youngsters were a marvel to watch. It is not true that the standard of football is going down, taking into consideration the talent that was displayed today,” he concludes. Regional head coach Themba Dlamini said that not having douments let most youngsters down. He believes that if most of the local boys had passports or IDs they could have made it to the provincial team. (See Shooting From the Hip comment on P15). At the time of going to print, the names of all the selected players for the provincial squad had not yet been released to the media.

SASOLBURG. - On your mark, get set and ready. Swimmers aged between 11 and 18 are preparing for the Level 2 Regional Age Group Swimming Championship set to get underway at the Penny Heyns Swimming Pool from today (March 20 to 23). This is the second consecutive year that Sasol is sponsoring the event, which is organised by Swimming South Africa and the Sasolburg Swimming Club. Approximately 500 athletes from the Free State, KwaZulu Natal and Northern Cape provinces will participate in the event. The championship is one of the first steps in a young swimmer’s career that puts endurance levels to the test. The event offers swimmers who progress to the next round the opportunity to be selected for international events such as the Youth Africa Games, Youth Olympic Games and Commonwealth Youth Games, to name a few. Swimmers will have another opportunity to showcase their talent at the 43rd Sasol National Winter Championships, which will be taking place from June 30 to July 5 at the same venue. Meanwhile, Sharpeville Sports Council in conjunction with the Lekoa Eligwa Swimming Association hosted a fun-filled swimming tournament at Sharpeville’s Swimming Pool on Saturday.

All roads will lead to the Penny Heyns Swi ming Pool in Sasolburg this weekend.
