SEBOKENG. - The devil will never rule in local schools. This was evident when the African National Congress Women’s League (ANCWL) in partnership with the South African Democratic Teachers Union (Sadtu) and different religious organisations put some time aside for prayer against satanism and violence towards teachers and learners in schools in Zone 10 Extension 1 on Sunday. ANCWL President and Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga spoke about Satanism in schools at the service. Two teenage girls were found dead in an alleged occult related murder in Dobsonville, Soweto last month. Motshekga said that after the murders, a campaign was launched to educate communities and schools on the government’s position regarding education and religion. Accompanied by Sadtu Provincial Secretary Tseliso Ledimo, General Secretary Mugwena Maluleka, Faith Based Organisation representative Apostle Buti Nthako of Harvest Time Revival Ministries and Sedibeng District Municipality Mayor Simon Mofokeng, the minister said, “A number of priests have been writing to us to partner with the ministry to address matters of Satanism in communities. “That is why we are here today, to mobilise pastors and faith-based organisations to work with pupils and schools.” Community members appealed to her to bring back daily assemblies when prayers were said before classes could start, adding that children could no longer cope with their school work because of the occult practices on school premises. Motshekga ended by saying that children should be allowed to practice their different family beliefs as long as they are in line with the department’s code of conduct and the country’s constitution.

Burglar tossed in to Vaal River

Lazarus Dithagiso

SHARPEVILLE. - Four suspects including a petrol dealer have been arrested, charged with attempted murder and kidnaping. There’s a possibility that charges might be added to include murder if Police find one of the two victims, who is feared drowned. A victim told Police that he and a friend were thrown into the Vaal River by four people. The incident happened after the victims were apparently caught in the act of breaking and stealing from a filling

station (garage) in Sharpeville in the early hours of the morning on Friday. Station Commander of the Sharpeville Police Station Colonel Ceaser Mbali says that one of the two victims, a middle-aged man, narrowly escaped drowning. According to a security guard at the garage, he heard the sound of people breaking into the business and he called the owner who arrived with two other men in a vehicle. They caught the victims, assaulted them, forced them into the vehicle, and drove them

to the river near Bedworth Park. A victim told Police they were thrown into the river and left to die. The first victim managed to escape after swimming and holding himself steady on reeds. While screaming for help, a nearby security guard came to his rescue and called Police. The SAPS Water Wing arrived to rescue him. He could not explain to the police what had happened to his friend. According to a Sedibeng Ster source at the scene, the victim tried to shift the blame that

they were caught while searching for the left-overs of the cigarettes outside the filling station, but later made an about-turn and confessed that they were stealing. He also told the police that the security guard at the garage was also part of the people assaulted and thrown in the river. Mbali said the four suspects were arrested and briefly appeared for bail application on Tuesday. It is not clear whether the second victim is still alive. The SAPS Water Wing is still searching for him in the river.

The police identified the mark on the cattle as described by the owner. When the police wanted to arrest him for stock theft, he claimed that the cattle belonged to another person who probably stole them, and he will help them to catch him. The old man then contacted another person to come and collect his money. The second suspect confessed to the police that he had stolen the cattle in Mullerstuin Smallholding in Barrage near Vanderbijlpark. Mofokotsane said that the two suspects were arrested and charged with stock theft. They briefly appeared in the Vanderbijlpark Magistrates Court. The case was postponed until March 31. “The old man who became a state witness was released on a warning, but his counterpart remained in custody,” said Mofokatsane. The owner of the cattle appreciated and applauded the police for the excellent work they did to retrieve his cattle.

No eviction until after general elections? Lazarus Dithagiso

SEBOKENG. - Residents illegally squatting in about 75 RDP houses in Zone 19 will know their fate after the general elections. Reliable Sedibeng Ster sources in the Gauteng Provincial Housing Department offices have indicated that there’s an instruction that no evictions may take place until the elections. The final order issued to the Red Ants was to proceed with evictions on March 18. This was stopped by the department after some illegal squatters had already moved out during the night to avoid the Red Ants. The eviction date has been postponed until further notice. Apparently, the government grew weary and deemed it inappropriate conducting evictions with elections around the corner. The sources say that the department will give an order to the local municipality in Ju-

Parks Khaiyane, leader of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFFs) in Zone 19, said, “It’s not for the government to evict the residents. We are protected by the constitution.” Khaiyane said ELM Mayor Gretha Hlongwane has since promised to call the leaders of Zone 19 to discuss the matter and come up with an amicable solution.

EVATON. - A 77-year-old pensioner was arrested for possession of four stolen cattle worth R26 000 in his yard in Evaton. Another suspect was apprehended by the police when he arrived to collect his payment from the old man. This is after the Barrage Police received a tip-off from members of the community about the old man selling stolen cattle. Police spokesperson Sergeant Mofokatsane said Sergeant Isaac Ndweni and Sergeant Gerrit Janneke arrived at the suspect’s house pretending to buy cattle. The old man took them to the kraal, and started negotiating a price.

SHARPEVILLE. - The 54th anniversary of the Sharpeville Massacre was commemorated on Friday. 69 people were brutally killed by the apartheid police on March 21, 1960, and 180 people were badly injured. Now known as Human Rights Day, the event was commemorated by the Sharpeville community together with the different political parties. At the main event at the Sharpeville Grounds, President Jacob Zuma was the main speaker. He stated that many positive things have been done by the ruling party in the 20 years that they have been in power. Zuma said, “As the nation celebrates 20 years of freedom this is also an opportunity to recall all the achievements made by South Africans. It has not been an easy journey since the legacy of apartheid was huge and the backlogs were massive.” The EFF and PAC together held their commemoration ceremony outside the Sharpeville Hall where a commotion nearly burst out between the ANCYL and its arch rivals. 10 survivors of the massacre were presen-

ted with smart card IDs by Minister of Home Affairs Naledi Pandor and Zuma in front of the masses. Zuma, Minister of Arts and Culture Paul Mashatile, Premier of Gauteng Nomvula Mokonyane and Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development Jeff Radebe were all welcomed by District Municipality Mayor Simon Mofokeng.

9R_Na\ @R_R_\ The tolerance that reigned last Friday in Sharpeville amongst the different political parties should be commended. Although most shared different ideas and beliefs, together they came and celebrated Human Rights Day without many incidents and acts of hooliganism. It was thought that there would be a ‘miniwar’ on the day, but much to disgust of those that had wished for this, none transpired. I don’t think that tolerance is possible without understanding. I don’t even think I like the word “tolerance” to begin with because it has that connotation of “putting up with” something or someone in-

SEDIBENG STER

Permissiveness: King of the day stead of “learn to get along with” something or someone. I think that, in order to build a stronger community where everyone is respected, we need to start learning about each other and understand those aspects of our lives that make us who we are, no matter how different. True, I am not able to identify with everyone, but if I can look that person in the eye and say: “I can see where you are coming from and why you feel the way you do,” then we would be able to move on to more important issues. Learning to respect others’ differences comes in time. As Helen Keller once said “The highest result of education is tolerance.” By learning more about others we begin to realise that being tolerant is not about compromising our own beliefs, but rather, as John Kennedy said, it’s about “condemning the oppression or persecution of others.” Continued education is the only root to a truly tolerant society.

I think the best way to tolerate people is to put yourself in the other person’s shoes. I think it makes it a lot easier to understand where someone is coming from. Sometimes it’s more difficult when someone has a different view than you and you don’t understand why. However, and it is easier said than done, we have to really think about why they feel the way

Groenpunt clinches excellence awards Mduduzi Mathebula

SEDIBENG. - The diamond city of Kimberley embraced 60 nominees who vied for top honours in the department’s National Corrections Excellence Awards (NCEA) on Friday. The spacious Mittah Seperepere Convention Centre near the big hole in Kimberley was filled to the brim with about 1200 guests, most of them officials, who came to enjoy the success of their outstanding fellow working mates. First in line was the Reading for Redempti-

on Award, which went to Michael Kau Group Leader - Groenpunt for Medium, Youth Centre, and the Sasolburg Centres of Excellence in the Free/State Northern Cape region. The Masibambinsane Award went to Ndlela Mbele from the Groenpunt Management Area at the Area Commissioner’s office in the Free State & Northern Cape region. The winners for 2012/13 at 6th Free State & Northern Cape region were: Public Safety Award: Andries Morake from Maximum Correctional Centre at

Groenpunt Management Area. Education and Training Award: Rethabile Mokoena from the Maximum Correctional Centre Male Centre at Groenpunt Management Area. The BathoPele Award: Ndlela Mbhele from Groenpunt Management Area at the Area Commissioner’s office in Free State & Northern Cape Region. “Our correctional officials are agents of change, said Minister Sibusiso Ndebele when he addressed the officials. He added that these officials have a pivotal role to play in social cohesion and nation-building. “In order to achieve this incredible feat of healing

and building South Africa, we must all truly desire to see it happen as our forbearers did. We are descendants of champions, and the DNA of winners runs in our bloodline. We cannot afford moderation, because it leads to mediocrity. We need intensity, which leads to excellence. Finally, to those who will not win today, Michael Jordan’s words are instructive: “ I’ve missed over 9,000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. Twenty-six times I’ve been trusted to take the game-winning shot ... and missed. I’ve failed over and over in my life. And that is why I succeed, concluded Ndebele.

UT’s rapid expansion shows that the University is on its way to providing an even bigger and better teaching and learning environment of which all can be proud. Main Campus has been transformed with its new, modern, architectural-styled building and state-of-the-art laboratory facilities – and plans to improve VUT’s facilities extend beyond these boundaries. From January 2014, VUT’s reach has extended to the Daveyton Campus, occupied now by VUT and UNISA in a collaborative arrangement. The Department of Higher Education and Training awarded the Daveyton Campus to VUT to accommodate the rapid growth in student numbers and growing demand for a contact university in the Ekurhuleni region.

The Daveyton Campus (previously Vista University) was originally given to Unisa, who occupied it along with the University of Johannesburg. A task team, comprised of members of VUT and Unisa, is finalising the joint use of the space and facilities. However, this arrangement will be phased out over two years, when VUT will become the sole owner of the property. Professor Omara Ojungu, Daveyton Campus Principal, said:

“We need to expand [for] community engagement and to have a meaningful relationship with industry, in particular to support Work Integrated Learning initiatives.”

he Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) visited the Vaal University of Technology on 10-11 March 2014 as part of its regular accreditation programme for all universities and universities of technology offering engineeringrelated courses. For VUT, this accreditation visit also followed up on ECSA’s previous inspection, on 12-13 March 2013, at which some deficiencies and concerns were identified. A feedback session took place at the Engineering and Technology Faculty boardroom on 11 March where, after much deliberation and scrutiny, a clean bill of health was declared: all VUT’s Engineering programmes were fully accredited until the next accreditation cycle in 2016. This means VUT students have the very latest technology, access to stateof-the-art methodology, and professional development in engineering competencies, mentoring, training and practical work. They graduate as competent persons, meeting the minimum requirements to be registered as Candidate Engineering Technicians and Technologists.

ECSA accreditation is internationally recognised as one of the best management practices in engineering education and is aligned to internationally recognised engineering accords. This standing provides VUT graduates with the platform to use their qualification for employment anywhere in the world. ECSA’s core functions are: setting standards for education and professional competence, evaluating and accrediting education programmes, assessing the competency of applicants for registration, maintaining a register of registered professionals, setting and enforcing codes of conduct and practice, and investigating misconduct. ECSA’s role in education as an accrediting body is to ensure all engineering programmes in the various disciplines countrywide comply with the regulatory body and are fully accredited. The accreditation process followed a series of visits to laboratories and lecture rooms, interviews with students and academics as well as a physical audit of study materials, learner guides and other teaching aids used to prepare graduates for the work place.

Local movie ‘Nyaope the drug’ Mduduzi Mathebula

SEDIBENG.- All Vaal’s upcoming stars are wrapped up in the cast of one movie ‘Nyaope the Drug’ - written and produced by the Vaal’s own Bongani Maseko who has 22 years experience in the film industry. Maseko took the leap of faith by introducing untested talent in the movie. Maseko says he deliberately used people who had not been seen before. “I have used young talented actors/actresses who have not tasted the limelight, people who are hungry for success, raw talent that is keen to embrace any opportunity to shine. I could not have done it without a very determined team and

director - Muntu Zwane a household name from Emzin Wensizwa,” says Maseko The story is about drug abuse (nyaope) and young girls ending up in the trap of addiction. The movie will be an eye-opener to many drug dealers, that nothing on the surface of the world will be hidden forever. The movie co-stars Vuyiswa ‘Nono’ Dyarva, who says playing a role for her first movie was very challenging and unforgettable. “I’m very excited by this role, which throws me in at the deep end. I hope I will learn more as time progresses and live the dream,” says Dyarva. The post production is in progress and the final part of the movie will be on our TV-screens soon.

Sedibeng Boxing Organisation hosts clinics

Lightning doesn’t strike twice in the same place

Football people are easy to rob! How can Shooting From The Hip forget when football people were promised heaven and earth before the 2010 World Cup, but were left with egg on their faces after that. Many companies and businesses came to football organisations to invest, but as soon as the World Cup was over, they left, leaving many of us heartbroken. It is election time and now political parties are making football fields their campaigning grounds. Look, there is nothing wrong when political parties donate soccer equipment to the development teams in this region, but there is something wrong if they do it with hidden agendas - which I am very confident to say we all know is the case here. The elections are around the corner and political parties see football as an easy ride to domination. As soon as they get the votes, I bet you they will forget all about football.

Hell no! We will never allow football to be used like a disposable nappy. They are targeting football because they know this is a mass participation sporting code. The truth is - we don’t want these politicians in football when it is election time only, but throughout the year. Football people are sometimes so oblivious and can’t even see when they are being used. There will be tournaments staged in this region by the very same political parties pretending to care about the development of football in this region. As much as football needs the financial muscle, these political parties must not take advantage. If they donate sporting equipment it must not only be when it is election time. The truth is that football people are not as desperate as these political parties think they are – this is one of the sporting codes that will never die – money or no money. Shooting From The Hip thought that those involved in soccer learned a lesson from the World Cup when the very same companies and businesses left us with broken hearts. As they say – lighting doesn’t strike twice in the same place. Soccer has been here throughout the years and those political parties that are interested in sponsoring football must follow the correct channels and stop making promises to ill-informed development coaches. True!

popular sporting codes in this region. Halls such as Mphatlalatsane Theatre and Sharpeville Hall used to be packed to capacity on Fridays. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster, Tsotetsi believes that the time has come for everyone to come together to revive this sport. He believes that boxing can go back where it used to be, but only if local business and companies come on board. He says some of the challenges they face are lack of facilities for former boxers to train these up-and-coming boxers. For example, he says Shole Mokoena is struggling to get a place where he can train these youngsters. He pleads for schools to give them access to use the classrooms or halls for training purposes. “We want to make a special appeal to the school’s principals to allow these former boxers to use the classes for training because there are no boxing gyms in other areas. It is a fact that there are no boxing gyms in this region, hence our boxers travel to Johannesburg for training. We must have our own gym and not depend on outsiders,” he says. Meanwhile, Tsotetsi says they also invite the white community to come and be part of these boxing clinics. He says boxing is a sport for everyone regardless of colour.

SEBOKENG.- Sedibeng Boxing Organisation will host boxing clinics scheduled to take place at Saul Tsotetsi Sports Complex in Zone 14, Sebokeng. This mouth-watering news was broken to Sedibeng Ster Sport by organisation chairman Morena Tsotetsi. According to Tsotetsi all boxing clubs, former boxers, schools and individuals are invited to attend these coaching clinics. The clinics are part of the Sedibeng Boxing Organisation’s ongoing campaign to revive boxing in Sedibeng. Tsotetsi believes that these anticipated clinics will bring all the former and current boxers together and take boxing to the next level in this region. Some former boxers who are still involved in boxing in this region include Shole ‘Tiger Floor’ Mokoena, Aaron ‘AK 47’ Kabi, to mention only two. SEDIBENG. - Vaal Skateboarding (VSKB) is an initiative focused on promoting skateboarding across the Vaal Triangle region, with the aim of leaving a meaningful and lasting impression. Andrew van Rensburg, the founder of VSKB, has been skating in the Vaal for the past 16 years and has watched the local skate scene push through many highs and lows. He says that although the Vaal has a unique and fast-growing community of skateboarders, it unfortunately has poor and few facilities available where the riders can develop their skills. Through positive community interaction and support VSKB hopes to build and maintain a healthy level of interest in the sport and see better facilities established in the future. Anyone interested can follow them on their Facebook page: Vaal Skateboarding.
