Former Vaal Professionals star dies on soccer pitch Zacharia Nale

RUST-TER-VAAL.- The tragic death of former Vaal Professionals Football Club soccer player - Neil Jansen (48) - has left both the local soccer fraternity and former professional soccer players heartbroken. Jansen died on the field while the Sedibeng Vaal Legends soccer team was playing against the Krugersdorp Legends soccer teams in Mogale City on Saturday. This sad news was broken to Sedibeng Ster Sports by Moses Moloi a former soccer player who was on the same team as Jansen on the day of his death. “Neil is no more. He fell down while we were playing and he was declared dead on the spot by the paramedics,” says Moloi. Other former professionals who were playing on the same team as the two include his former teammates at Vaal Professionals and Blackpool – Geelbooi ‘Goma Goma’ Masango, Brandly Mahlonko and Magic Salomane. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sports - Masango a close friend of Jansen, says he just heard the deceased calling his name and when he turned around, Jansen was holding his chest and going down. According to Masango, they were waiting for a throw-in to be taken when the terrible incident happened. “Everyone is devastated and traumatised because it was the first time we experienced something like this in our lifetimes. I was very close to Neil and he welcomed me when I joined Vaal Professionals. We used to share a room whenever we were camping. I will never forget this because Neil died in our arms. The paramedic tried his best to revive him but it was too late. May his soul rest in peace and condolences to his friends, former team-

mates and family,” says a heartbroken Masango. Vaal Professionals was a founder member of the Premier Soccer League (PSL) in 1996. They were nicknamed ‘Setla’ or ‘Vaal Monsters.’ It is the only professional soccer team to have come out of this area and was coached by the legendary and former Kaizer Chiefs star Simon ‘Bull’ Lehoko. During the 90’s many teams including the likes of Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs would not return with a win from the KwaMasiza Stadium which was the teams’ slaughterhouse. Jansen leaves behind three children. Mark Da Silva, a family member, says Jansen will be laid to rest at Rustter-Vaal Cemetery on Saturday. The funeral service will be held at the Roman Catholic Church in Rust-terVaal at 09:00. Jansen was involved in the development of football in this region. He coached his own soccer team known as Rus-ter-Vaal Saints FC. SEBOKENG. - Community members of Ward 20 in Palm Springs are deeply irked because they have been without a library for years. They want to know why the library is being used as a storage facility instead of serving its purpose. This isn’t the first time they have cried out about an issue they claim is being ignored, even though it may affect the futures of their children. Concerned resident Godfrey Khantsi says it hurts to know kids have nowhere to go on weekends to study or read. “We feel we are being failed. Just like in any other community, kids here deserve to have a library where they can go and gain knowledge.” Khantsi believes strongly that a library can keep kids away from negative pursuits. “In a community that struggles with many negative things, such as a high crime rate and substance abuse, a library should become a priority as it will keep many kids away from such negativity.” Ward 20 Councillor Lewi Ngubani was unwilling to comment on the matter.

VEREENIGING. - Pastor Paseka “Mbhoro” Motsoeneng was in court again, accused of pointing a fire-arm on the Thetha FM premi-

ses in 2011. This time around he was not supported only by the church as he also had political support from the ANC, EFF, PAC and IFP.

The case was postponed as the magistrate reviewed the case. This was allegedly after controversial statements uttered by the accused on his church programme. Thetha FM’s Jimmy Dlamini was left wondering following the support shown by the political parties members to the pastor. “How do these parties support a person who is accused of a criminal offen-

se? If only people could know what happened that day, Motsoeneng can ask for peace which he will get - but we are not going to back down on the case and will wait until justice prevails - parties or no parties,” says Dlamini. During the break, Motsoeneng further addressed the masses and acknowledged all the parties present in his support. An ANC flag was seen behind Motseoneng everywhere he moved while the EFF and other parties acted as security guards giving him a guard-of-honour status every step of the way. Sedibeng Ster managed to speak to the regional PAC chairperson, Ndade Mxunya who said that the relationship between the PAC and Motsoeneng was forged by the national office prior to the election campaigns. “In the court case, justice has to take its course regardless of affiliation,” says Nxunya. ANC Regional Secretary Bob Mthembu, spokesperson Themba Ndaba including the Gauteng spokesperson for the EFF Patric Sindani were unavailable for comment. Further efforts were made to reach Motsoeneng, but his cell phone was on voicemail.

Whoever is taking us for a ride in President Jacob Zuma’s Nkandlagate Saga must unsympathetically be taken to task. te house after the ombudsman found that he unduly benefitted from the renovations. Madonsela said the R246 million spent on the renovations at Zuma’s country homestead was excessive and ordered him to repay some of the costs. But in his first public reaction to the damning report released two weeks ago, Zuma has shifted the blame to government officials saying he did not ask for the renovations and he would not pay. “They did this without telling me,” he was shown saying in local vernacular on local private television “So why should I pay for something I did not ask for?” he asked.

SEBOKENG. - Supporters of the South African National Civic Organisation (Sanco), African National Congress (ANC) and Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) took to the streets of Polokong to vent their frustration. They bayed for the blood of Democratic Alliance (DA) Ward 25 Councillor Attie Moleko, demanding that he step down. About 400 residents woke up in the early hours of Monday morning to barricade the Golden Highway with burning tyres and rocks. Police were quick to respond, giving motorists alternative routes. Emfuleni Local Municipality Speaker Msebenzi Gqoloshe wasted no time in arriving

to receive the memorandum. He promised to respond within 14 days as per request. Among the concerns raised by the community is their allegation that Moleko never calls public meetings and they are not satisfied with his performance as he also does not reside in their ward, but in Zone 14. Moleko apparently promised to hand residents their house title deeds, but this has not happened. There are no proper roads, no community library or recreation facilities or parks in the area. SANCO’s branch chairperson Hunter Modiko said they had last year submitted a petition of 180 signatures to the office of Gqoloshe who failed to respond within a specified period.

The cost of the refurbishments, which include a helipad, a swimming pool and even a chicken coop, have ballooned to R246million from the initial estimated R65million in 2009. The splurge on the house - nestled in the verdant hills of Zuma’s political stronghold - has caused anger in a country where there is widespread poverty and where 10 million people live on welfare. I fail to understand how work could have been done on the senior citizen’s property without his knowledge, that being said if Zuma did not know anything about this major project. I beg to ask where he was when a tuck-

Was he oblivious to all this? Why would you need a mansion to the value of R264 million if you are never even there? Arts a serious career choice

Moleboheng Chaha

VEREENIGING.- Human rights and responsibility go hand in hand. This was the moral behind the recent showcasing of poetry and story-telling staged by the Gauteng Organisation of Community Arts and Culture Centres (GOMACC) of Sedibeng at the Vereeniging Civic Theatre recently. The progrmme catered for out-of-school ar-

tists, primary and secondary school kids from various schools in the region. As part of Sedibeng’s Human Rights Month programme, GOMACC partnered with various stake holders such as the Emfuleni, Midvaal and Lesedi local municipalities, the Gauteng Provincial Government and Inhlanganiso Writers Assosiation. The event gave a platform to poets and storytellers from all walks of life to share their pieces, which aimed to con-

scientise audiences about rape, substance abuse, HIV and AIDS, crime and, most importantly, Human Rights and the responsibility they come with. From the Department of Education, Sedibeng West District, Thabang Letlaka says: “Not all these kids will become scientists or doctors, which is why the Arts should be taken as a serious career choice and be implemented in the curriculum starting at Basic Education institutions.” GOMACC Secretary Muzi Malindi reiterated the same words as those of Let-

laka. Malindi added that the showcase followed a workshop, which helped to develop poetry and storrytelling skills among performers. “The theme is Human Rights. We are trying to find out whether these kids know how the day came about, the history behind it and what it means to exercise their rights in this country.” Talking about this importance, Malindi stated that creativity was a God-given talent and needed to be nurtured.

You can do it again in 2014

Moleboheng Chaha

SEBOKENG. - The Konoinia Bible Church in Zone 14 last week honoured the Sedibeng East District Department of Education for having distinguished itself in the number one ‘spot’ in the country. Cheers came from all around for the team

that had put the Vaal on the map with its top matric results. This was done as part of the church’s Social Development campaign. This comes after the district’s achievement in producing the highest 2013 matric pass rate. From the church George Mothapo said,

“Only a leader can lead an organisation to the the grave or to the highest level. The latter reflects the Sedibeng East District and this is why we are here today thanking Director Dorah Moloi and her team for having done an outstanding job.” Moloi says, “We are really honoured to be

7

here today. The honour of the achievement though should not be attributed to us, but to God Almighty who made it possible. I salute the educators from the lowest level of education where the foundation is layed, to the exit point which is Grade 12,” Moloi concluded.

Sedibeng FM: A new baby on the airwaves

Lerato Serero

SEDIBENG.- The Vaal Gate Shopping Centre in Vanderbijlpark was a hive of activity last Friday and Saturday, this follows the auditions held by the soon-to-be on air station Sedibeng FM.

The auditions were held to determine who were the best candidates to join the station as producers, newsreaders, DJs, etc. Many talented Sedibeng residents young and old tried their luck. The station is said to be opening this week and can be caught on 104.8 MHz.

It is set to give its rivals who have been in the game much longer such as VUT FM, Thetha FM and VCR FM amongst others a run for their money. The top-brass of the station includes amongst others Mnini Molotsi, Jeffrey Seleka, Thys Diale and Kagiso Mosakeng. One of the scoops of the season for the station is the acquirement of former Thetha FM

9

Radio Breakfast presenter Thabo Mokone in the line up of their Deejays. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster, Diale says, “We are defiantly here to stay and we are bringing with us a lively and healthy radio presentation technique. We are going to make sure that we give the community of Sedibeng something that they have been missing for years which is a new, young and vibrant style of radio.”

End whistle blows for Jansen nament. He was fuming, telling his players that they are useless because they failed to beat Nale Academy despite Nale Academy players being younger than them. Then Ama Cheese Boys went on and won the tournament beating their arch-rivals Vaal Milano 1-0. Then after the game he said, “Nale, now you see the reason why I left your boys to go and play in the final? It is because the kind of football they play deserves to be seen by everyone.” My point exactly is that Neil was a very honest man. He used to give credit where it was due. Shooting From The Hip wishes that the Rust-ter-Vaal community can take over where Neil left off - to take care of those youngsters.

A dark cloud is hanging over Sedibeng following the tragic death of former Vaal professional soccer player Neil Jansen. Jansen was instrumental in the formation of the junior league in Rust-ter-Vaal and neighbouring areas together with Eric ‘Fox’ Moya. While other former soccer players show little interest in the development of football, Neil was active - making sure that this region produced other Neil Jansens. This former star was an advocate of develop-

ment in this region. Many might know him as a player - playing for the now defunct Blackpool and Vaal Professionals but Shooting From Hip is more interested in his love for the development of football. He was a man with character, especially when his team played against Nale Academy. He would tell his players to be hard on ‘Ama Cheese Boys’ because they are not used to hard-tackles. But there is this incident that Shooting From The Hip will never forget Neil’s team – Rustter-vaal Saints FC- was playing against Nale Academy in the Rust-ter-Vaal Tournament and the score was 1-1 in full time and without any penalties, Neil decided that Nale Academy should go through to the next stage of the tour-

He is now in heaven to start a new life and pave ways for some of us. If it is possible I would ask him to open a development league in heaven so that when some of us die we can join it. I’m happy he died in the field of play unlike those who died at taverns or in shebeens. He died doingthe thing he loved most - playing soccer. Shooting From The Hip would like to use this opportunity to send condolences to his friends, former teammates and family. He has run his race and now it is up to me and you to take over the reins. May your soul rest in peace, my brother from another mother. We will always remember you for the contribution you made in the development of football in the Sedibeng region.

Know what’s waiting round the next bend?

SEDIBENG.- Although Sedibeng is not represented in the 2014 Future Champions Gauteng International Tournament that came to an end over the weekend at the Football Training Centre in Pimville, Soweto, one of our local boys Wandile Manqa participated in the tournament. This Vanderbijlpark-based speedy midfielder-cum-striker is living his dream to play in one of the teams that are rich in history - Jomo Cosmos, alias Ezinkosi. This was the biggest stage for Manqa, taking into consideration that it was the first time he participated in this international tournament. The boy joined Comos last month from the local academy after Cosmos coaches were impressed by his talent and work rate. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sports, Manqa says he wants to finish the tournament among the top goal-scorers. This Vaal High School student might be promoted to the first team at the end of the tournament. Sedibeng Ster Sports has learned that Jomo Cosmos Chairpersn and Coach Jomo Sono has been monitoring his progress since he joined the team. He has produced a five-star performance and has already scored more than 10 goals since he joined the club. “This is like a dream come true for me and playing at Future International Tournament is one of the best things that could have happened in my career. I want to be among the top goal-scorers at the end of the tournament. I’m enjoying myself and I want to thank my previous team for who I am today. If it wasn’t for them I don’t think I could have gotten to where I am today,” says Manqa.

SASOLBURG. - The newly renovated DP de Villiers Stadium hosted Sasol NWU Pukke this past Tuesday. It was the first time in many years that an international senior athletics meeting has been held at the venue since its renovation. This Sasol NWU Pukke permit meeting was one of only a few senior athletics meetings that take place before the South African Senior Athletics Championships, which is scheduled for April in Pretoria. T he event was hosted by Sasol in partn ership with the North-West University’s Potchefstroom Campus and the body corporate of the DP de Villiers Stadium. The meeting was made possible by the stadium renovations completed in 2012, which was primarily achieved through Sasol’s infrastructure development project, Ikusasa. The venue now has level-two track status, which enables it to host national events with all records accepted by the International Athletics Federation. Besides seeing home-grown athletic heroes such as Chris Harmse (hammer throw) and Eliza Naudé (discus) in action, spectators were excited to see two of South Africa’s top athletes, André Olivier (800m) and Elroy Gelant (3000m), who have both just returned from the 2014 IAAF World Indoor Championships in Sopotm, Poland. Meanwhile, in September 2012, Sasol in partnership with the Metsimaholo Local Municipality and Metsimaholo Rejuvenation Trust, embarked on a project to upgrade the stadium. The project replaced the tartan track, repaired floodlights, purchased equipment such as hurdles, replaced the electronic timing device and performed general maintenance to buildings and ablution facilities.

Pooe Easter tournament to start Zacharia Nale

EVATON. - All roads will lead to Birmingham Rovers’ dusty soccer field when this year’s much anticipated Annual Pooe Easter Soccer Tournament takes place on April 21. This was revealed to Sedibeng Ster Sports by tournament co-ordinator Mondli Nkosi. The tournament is organised by Pooe Sports Foundation as part of the development of sports in this region. The junior soccer teams programme starts during the school holidays, while the senior teams are expected to start their campaign on April 21. The finals are scheduled to take place at the same venue on April 21. The tournament is divided into four categories, u/13, u/15, u/17, and senior soccer teams. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sports, Nkosi says this year’s tournament will be bigger and better with a lot of prizes at stake. Nkosi says the aim of the tournament is to keep children occupied during the school holidays. Last year Stone Breakers FC was crowned tournament champions. However,

this year, Nkosi believes that the competition will be stiff. According to Nkosi all the teams are invited and it is first come, first served, as all the teams are invited to participate in this annual soccer tournament. The other sporting codes to take place will include netball. “I would like to thank Mr Pooe for his generosity towards the development of sport in this region. “I mean the man has done a lot for our sports in this region, and not only for football but also for netball. These are people we must be proud of because they care about the future of this region. People can say what they want to say, but Mr Pooe is one of the few local business people who show commitment to the development of football here,” says Nkosi. Local businessman Kgogi Pooe has been involved in the Pooe Festival and Easter Soccer Tournament for the past 10 years. These tournaments are among the greatest soccer events in Gauteng Province.
