SHARPEVILLE.- A young man in his early 20s recently lost his life as he was trying to off-load scrap from a moving truck in Tshepiso Phase 3. It is believed that these young men are struck by trucks regularly as they steal scrap from moving trucks because they see it as the only income with which they can support their drug habits. It’s alleged that the driver did not stop at the intersection as there were no oncoming vehicles as he turned, trying to get the man off the truck. The man fell and the back wheels of the truck struck him. He died on the scene. Community members called the police and on arrival they found the man lying in the middle of the road with a very badly broken body and squashed face. The truck did not stop and it is not known from which company it came. The young man is also unknown but community members believe that he lives nearby. The police are investigating a culpable homicide case. Police spokesperson Attie Loate said, “The youth should refrain from such acts as they are losing their lives. One lost life is already one too many.”

Nightmare finally over

Pinky Mofokeng

BOPHELONG. - A little girl who has been living in fear ever since her stepfather sexually abused her in April 2013 will rest assured knowing he is behind bars. Sonnyboy Tshoko (41) was sentenced to 15 years in prison for rape at the Vanderbijlpark Magistrates Court recently. The family who lives in Bophelong is very relieved that their nightmare is over. Sedibeng Ster published the story of a 41-yearA1TPLZA

old man who allegedly raped his 10-year-old stepdaughter in April last year. It appears that the ex-convict also tried several times to rape the victim’s older sister (19) at the time without any success. According to the mother her boyfriend was very supportive and loving at first, but as the years passed he became very dangerous and abusive. The mother says, “I am very relieved that the man is behind bars where he belongs.

Hammer housebreaking suspect arrested

BOPHELONG.- Members of the Vanderbijlpark SAPS Visible Policing Tracing Team recently managed to arrest a housebreaking suspect who forms part of a group that has been harassing the community of Bophelong for some time. The group, always using a hammer to gain entry to houses, has been causing huge concern to the community and SAPS. Information led the Tracing Team to the suspect’s house where they managed to arrest him. The hammer was found in his possession. The suspect will now face several charges of housebreaking and theft. Police say that property-related crime is a huge challenge in Vanderbijlpark and Bophelong. Vanderbijlpark SAPS Visible Policing Tra cing Team with the recently arrested ‘ham mer’ suspect.

Crime escalation a worry for Roshnee residents Lazarus Dithagiso

ROSHNEE. - The escalation of unlawful activities in a small area of Rust-ter-Vaal and Roshnee is a serious concern for the residents. However, Police on several occasions have encouraged the community to sustain an ongoing social-community awareness campaign. Roshnee is a very small area or suburb in which most residents know each other. The crimes tormenting the residents are human trafficking, business robberies, smash-and-grabs, drugs and the free-roaming of illegal foreign nationals.

Ahmed Mohamed said some of the crimes are perpetrated by off-duty police officers. They allegedly collect bribes from victims. Another community member, who asked to remain anonymous for fear of being victimised, said they know the kingpin who sells illegal cigarettes. The suspect lives in a mansion worth over R8-million and controls the area remotely from Sonland Park. The communities appeal to the station commander of Vereeniging to investigate the police officers who call themselves the ‘Boere Mafia.’ They rule from as far afield as Vereeniging

and the Barrage. Captain Shado Mashobane said the matter was never brought to the attention of the management. Members of the public are welcome to contact Crime Stop on 086 0010 111 if they want to remain anonymous. Police officers collecting bribes should be reported immediately, said Captain Mashobane. He said in most cases the community is reluctant to report. Crime reported in Rust-ter-Vaal is committed by its residents. A male known as ‘Kraaifontein’ in Rust-ter-Vaal who used to terrorise the communities was arrested.

BRAND NEW HOUSES FROM R295 000

I do not understand what was recently said by former government ministers Ronnie Kasrils and his partner Nozizwe MadlalaRoutledge when they announced their campaign to discourage people from voting in the upcoming elections. To be a citizen of this country we have certain rights and privileges. We also have certain responsibilities; for example, to be active in positive change. Society is a form of extended family. We all contribute to society, either in a positive way or a negative way. To vote is to give a voice in playing a role in positive change. Many men died for our right to vote, as well as for other rights we now take for granted. Many could not vote for many years because they were not considered an important part of decision-making. Now we all have a responsibility to make the world a better place and we now have the right to do so. Women and the youth more than ever should now exercise their right to vote. All policies are made by the elected officials we get into office. All policies affect each and every citizen. Each one of us has a duty to leave the world a better place for the next generations because we lived. We can and should be aware of policies and officials. We should read the news and understand the direction our country is going in. Voting is the best way to get one’s opinions heard, as it allows one to select the candidate who best represents their view or views. In this way, voters’ future is decided by the decisions they make when voting. Voting also helps democracy prevail. If people didn’t vote they would be ruled by someone who wouldn’t necessarily represent them or have the country’s interests at heart. Now Ronnie and Nozizwe should not mess with your head. Do the right thing, go out there on May 7 and make an informed mark. Be the change that you want to see. Lerato…

Aquaponics system is the new formula for agriculture Learners of Carel de Wet Technical High School with their principal Gawie Rischter and Air Products managing director Mike Hellyar . Photo: Mduduzi Mathebula.

Mduduzi Mathebula

VANDERBIJLPARK. – Carel de Wet Technical High School unveiled the harvest of its aquaponics system producers recently to Air Products and Inmed Aquaponics. The technical aquaponics system was introduced by the two giant companies last year August. They named the school the luckiest among the regional schools. During the harvest event held at the school, all stakeholders were present to witness the great work invested by the companies and school. A number of learners were part of the agricultural curriculum. They said they learned a lot from the initiative. Air Products SA managing director (MD)

Mike Hellyar graced the wonderful initiative, which was launched last August with the Inmed Aquaponics Unit here at Carel de Wet Technical High School. He acknowledged the efforts and willingness of everybody who took part in the project. He added that one reason Air Products South Africa decided to get involved in this project is that “We saw the potential it had to have - a profoundly positive impact not only on future generations of Carel de Wet Technical High School learners, but also on the wider community. “This is why it is thrilling for us to be here today to witness new life and growth, which are symbols of hope for the future. We see

the fruits of this harvest as just the beginning of a process of positive change, an ongoing cycle of growth and regeneration, of fertility and renewal,” said Hellyar. He further said people might wonder `why an industrial gas company such as ours would want to get involved in an agricultural initiative’. “When we met with Inmed initially, we realised that the aims behind the aquaponics project are very much aligned with our aims as a responsible corporate citizen. And while it has to be said that Corporate Social Investment spending is manda-

tory for all corporates in South Africa, Air Products takes its responsibilities in this area extremely seriously. We have long realised the potential we have, as a thriving business, to wield a positive influence on the communities in each and every region where we operate. This has become an important part of our CSI drive,” said Hellyar during the press conference before all stakeholders were driven to the firm to unveil the green plant system.Happy Mazibuko (prefect) and one learner who is part of the project, said it was a great privilege for their school to have received such a project that includes education. She said they learned more about agriculture and life. “Six grow-beds have been managed by the school, producing, amongst others, tomatoes, cucumbers and bell peppers. The school has been experimenting with various crops, and now the students have had their first lesson in aquaponics and are planting them,” said Mazibuko. Inmed representative Jennet says they were gratified by the outcome and emerged with a great partnership with Air Products. “The Aquaponics system teaches children valuable skills when it comes to basic food production and provision; it teaches them ways of farming that are sustainable, environmentally sensitive and cost-effective. It teaches them that you do not necessarily need hectares and hectares of land in order to farm productively Aquaponics farming maximises space by up to ten times that of normal farming; and the project is even teaching the children commercial and business skills, such as marketing and sales,” said Jenet.

SEBOKENG. - Formely known as the Age in Action Old Age Centre, the Sebokeng Old Age Home in Zone 13 recently celebrated the 100th birthday of Wilhelmina Maphohosha. Maphohosha, who apparently does not have any living relatives, has been with the centre since 2004. “It is not every day that one turns a 100. Which is why we consider today a very special occasion,” said home manager Dalen Pretorious. “Although Maphohosha suffers from dementia, she still remembers her birthday. She is very aware of her surroundings,” adds Pretorious. Pretorious says that she and the staff at the home consider themselves as the family of Maphogosha. Makgubedu Monyane, who takes care of Maphogosha, says, “Gogo is our family and we take care of her. I would just like to wish her a happy birthday.” According

SEBOKENG. - Home-made theatre production “Township Girls”, brainchild of Phambili Ghetto Artists, recently garnered four awards at the Ishashalazi Theatre Awards facilitated by the Gauteng Department of Sports, Arts, Culture and Recreation. The production is the brainchild of Psalm Skhwenene Dlamini and was directed by Tsietsi Mahose. Gauteng Organisation of Community Arts and Culture Centres (GOMACC) secretary Muzi Malindi says, “It is evident that the Gauteng Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation MEC, Lebogang Maile, continues to rally behind theatre productions. We really appreciate his continuous support of emerging artists.” The Department apparently went around the province seeking the best theatre productions that would compete for the different

awards. The production ‘Township Girls’, which competed against 19 other productions, was awarded for Best Set, Best Male Actor, Best Supporting Male Actor and Best Female Supporting Actress. Pule Setime, who was awarded as Best Male Actor, says, “We feel very excited and all I want to say is that it was really about time. “ Our achievement is an inspiration to other aspiring artists and is also a sign that they too can compete with the best of the best and still come out on top.”

Pule Setime won the award for Best Male Actor for playing ‘Malome’ recently at the Gauteng Theatre Awards facilitated by the Gauteng Department of Sports, Recreati on, Arts and Culture. Photo: Moleboheng Chaha.

Results thriving or development coach – where do you fall? There are two kinds of coaching in this region – results thriving- and development coaching! Shooting From The Hip will explain: The results thriving coaches are those who couldn’t care less about players’ development as long as they win games or get results. It’s like a mechanic that doesn’t take care of his tools. It is also exactly like a taxi driver who doesn’t take his taxi for a service as long as he makes money. The development coach is the one that cares about the individual development of the players – technically and tactically speaking. If you look at most of the results thriving teams they lack technique and that’s why this region achieves little

when it comes to Safa tournaments. In this region all the coaches play for promotion, not to develop these youngsters to their full potential. For example – most teams get promoted but spend only one season in the SAB or Vodacom League before they get relegated at the end of the season becausea solid foundation was never laid in the first place. To make it worse – coaches believe in winning even if their team is plays ugly football. HELL NO! – this is not true. Barcelona is a typical example of a team that can produce good football and results at the same time. Some coaches have made a meal out of Barcelona’s current performance, especially after their defeat against their bitter rivals – Real Madrid.

There is nothing wrong with Barcelona – it’s just some teams have decided to play defensive mentality game when they play against them packing their defence hoping to catch them on the counter-attack. I call this BORING football, to say the least. As things stand – our own Bafana Bafana is in crisis because most of the players that represent us at the international competition are not completely developed. How can you expect our national team to compete against the best in the world while we still have players who still can’t use both feet? This is because of those thriving results coaches who did not have time to teach these players football basics like trapping, ball control, passing, receiving and heading among other

things. Shooting From The Hip is afraid because this poison of thriving results has also affected the promotion league in this region. Now every Tom, Dick and Harry is talking about promotion more than the development of players. Mind you, if you look at those teams that claim to be gunning for promotion they can’t even afford to buy five soccer balls to teach these youngsters simple football basics. The truth is that there is no way coaches can teach the players basics when they are over 15 years of age. No, this is going to be difficult to achieve. Now tell Shooting From The Hip: are you thriving for results or are you a development coach?

Former Bafana captain to sponsor junior league Zacharia Nale

SEDIBENG. - Sedibeng Ster Sport has learned that the Aaron Mokoena Foundation is locked in negotiations with the Emfuleni Local Football Association (ELFA) to sponsor the junior league. This is former Bafana Bafana Captain Aaron “Mbazo” Mokoena’s second attempt to sponsor the league after the previous deal failed due to miscommunications. This was confirmed by ELFA Chairman Philip Ndlovu, who said negotiations are under way between the two parties. Mokoena’s interest in getting involved with the juniors started after the 2010 World Cup when he made a proposal to the association, but this did not materialise due to internal politics. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sport, Ndlovu says Mokoena’s heart is with development because he started playing football when he was young, so he wants to contribute to the development of football in this region. Ndlovu says this is good news for local football to have former soccer players who are concerned with the development of football. “This is good news for our football because no-one wants to take care of the juniors, but I’m happy Mokoena has volunteered to sponsor our Junior League. This was long overdue, but there was a misunderstan-

ding between Mokoena and the previous executive committee. I’m happy because negotiations are at an advanced stage, to say the least,” says Ndlovu. Ndlovu revealed to Sedibeng Ster Sport that the league will be known as DDK and the Aaron Mokoena Foundation League. According to Mokoena the name is expected to change in two weeks’ time and there will also be a change of fixtures. The Junior League teams’ representative welcomed the move, saying it was long overdue for Mokoena to sponsor the league. “Our Junior League will be competitive because of sponsorship, unlike before when we played for nothing. As development coaches we are excited because these boys were starting to lose faith in us, but I think things will change for the better,” says Tebello Kheswa, a long-serving development coach in the Sedibeng region. For starters, Mokoena started his football career with the nowdefunct Boipatong Real Rangers FC before he was spotted by Jomo Sono for Jomo Cosmos. Sono saw Mokoena in the Safa u/17 Inter-Provincial Tournament representing the Safa Sedibeng region. Sedibeng Ster Sport attempted to get hold of Mokoena at the time of going to print, but was unable to do so.

VANDERBIJLPARK. - North West University (NWU) Vaal Triangle Campus in conjunction with the Emfuleni Local Football Association (ELFA) will host the first-ever NWU Vaal Super Cup Challenge. This exciting tournament, which will feature 16 teams that campaign in the ELFA’s Promotion League, was launched at NWU Vaal Campus last Thursday. The Vaal Super Cup forms part of the NWU’s 10-year anniversary celebration. The teams will be divided into two divisions – Boitshepiville and Sebokeng streams – with each division consisting of eight teams. The launch was attended by the NWU Vaal Campus Rector Professor Thanyani Mariba, and Warren Makgowe, director of University Marketing and Communication, among others.

The tournament is scheduled to kick off this coming weekend – with the final scheduled to take place at NUW Vaal Campus on May 17. Speaking at a press conference, NWU Vaal Marketing and Communication Department representatives Matome Kganakga said the main aim was not only to highlight the region’s soccer talent but also to emphasise the importance of post-school education. “As an institution we pride ourselves on delivering world class education and empowering young people to become economically active and responsible members of society, be it as entrepreneurs, business professionals, educators, community leaders or sports men and women,” he says. Kganakga added that through interventions such as the NUW Vaal Super Cup, the institution would play a major role in the develop-

ment of local soccer talent and also provide guidance and academic mentoring to young players. ELFA chairman Philip Ndlovu says one objective set by the association is to provide players with the necessary support both on and off the field. Ndlovu also revealed that the association is successfully closing the perceived gap between sport and academia. Professor Mariba also revealed during a period allowed for media questions that NWU Vaal Campus wants to follow in the footsteps of other institutions like the University of Pretoria and Bidvest Wits and have a professional team campaigning in top-flight football. Not long ago the institution formed a partnership with one of the biggest and most glamorous teams in South African football – Kaizer Chiefs.

SEDIBENG. - A crucial shortage of referees in Sedibeng has moved the Emfuleni Local Football Association to invite all those who are interested in reffing to come forward. This was revealed to Sedibeng Ster Sport by the association chairman Philip Ndlovu. Ndlovu says there is a serious need for referees in this region as some Promotion League games are played without proper refereeing. Ndlovu says he’s received a lot of complaints from Promotion League teams that no match officials presided over their matches. According to Ndlovu there are not enough referees in this region, hence some games are played without registered match officials. “I’m quite aware that there are not enough referees in this region, so we appeal to all those who are interested in becoming referees to come forward. This is bad because we want all Promotion League matches to be officiated by official referees including the junior league matches. We are doing everything in our power to get as many referees as possible,” says Ndlovu. Ndlovu says he has brought the regional crisis to the attention of Sedibeng Referees Academy director Jack Leboko. However, Ndlovu is positive that the association will get more referees in this region. * For more information Philip Ndlovu can be reached on 071 042 3308.
