VEREENIGING. - Just seven days ago this very same road - Waterdal Road near Sonland Park saw a most horrific accident. On Tuesday morning 15 passengers, including a driver were hospitalised after a taxi rolled at the intersection. Upon Sedibeng Ster’s arrival on the scene all passengers were being stretchered into an ambulance. It was reported that more than six ambulances rushed to the scene. Motorists looked on in shock as traffic officers controlled the scene. The driver of the taxi is said to have lost control of the vehicle and it overturned several times after hitting a bakkie. The Fire Department as well as Police were deployed to the scene. Captain Fikile Funda, Police spokesperson, says all 15 passengers were rushed to hospital after sustaining serious and minor injuries. “This road seems to be problematic for motorists since they are not obeying the rules of the road. We still appeal to motorists to use the road with awareness,” says Funda. He added that a case of reckless driving has been opened. Fortunately enough, no one in the bakkie was injured.

Change is coming in Sedibeng Sedibeng Ster Journalists
SEDIBENG.- Sedibeng Executive Mayor Simon Mahole Mofokeng during the State of the District Address (SODA) at the Vereeniging Civic Theatre last Thursday, quoted a well known author - “Dear Past, thank you for the lessons. Dear Future … I am Ready.” The SODA was broadcast in four different venues - the Vaal University of Technology, the North West University, Ratanda Multipurpose Center. Evaton and Sebokeng residents were assembled at the Mafatsana Community Hall, including Sicelo Community Hall in Midvaal. In his address Mofokeng said since 1994 in Sedibeng, as many as 71 244 houses have been built with electricity, running water and sanitation with over 85% connected to basic services. Accordingly, all old township houses that were without electricity for years, and some of the houses that were without running water and waste collection, now enjoy these services.“The historical backlog was enormous and, subsequently, we still have about 1000 informal settlement households in the region that are without sanitation including privately owned plots, but the progress made has been huge. “On the subject of housing, we are proud to showcase the housing project in Golden Gardens that moves away from the basic ‘matchbox’ style of RDP houses to a basic unit that features a style that is modern, spacious and well equipped with back yard rooms. “Whilst many households in Gauteng face a high cost of living, a 20-year review of the Gauteng Province has demonstrated that democratisation and significant transformation has brought about remarkable changes for the majority of people compared to the past. “It is encouraging to note that the Human Development Index in Gauteng has increased steadily, particularly between 2010 and 2012. In 20 years of democracy, life in South Africa has indeed changed, not just by chance, but by deliberate change,” Mofokeng said.
Just after the address mayoral awards were staged in the City Hall, where Mofokeng acknowledged all the great men and women who have done so well for the region. Meanwhile if all goes well, according to Emfuleni Local Municipality Mayor Gretha Hlongwane, the 2014\15 financial year will be one of the most remarkable for this area since democracy. Hlongwane was speaking during her State of the Municipality Address at the Saul Tsotetsi Sports Centre in Sebokeng on Fri-
day. The address was held under the theme “celebrating 20 years of freedom and democracy through public participation.” During the address Hlongwane mentioned that her council has electrified 1400 low cost houses in Tshepong phase, established 7 high mast lights in the areas of Sharpeville, Evaton, Kanana and Sebokeng Extension 15 to the tune of R3,2 million, and that they have been selected as the winner for the 2012/13 financial year in the Bontle ke Botho Clean and Green Com-

petition by the Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development. The ELM has also created 164 and 925 job opportunities both in the EPWP and CWP programmes with national office. “Working together with communities, we can really change lives indeed by speeding up service delivery. The municipality belongs to its entire people and its future is our collective effort,” said Hlongwane. In Midvaal, the Midvaal Local Municipality budget speech was delivered last week and an announcement was made on the new mayoral committee and speaker, due to the previous speaker joining parliament after the May 7 elections. In his speech Midvaal Local Municipality Mayor Bongani Baloyi mentioned that they are looking at a capital budget of R 85 997 000 20% of this is for operational expenses, and the remaining 80% will go towards projects across the wards. “If you look at this spend split across departments, you will see significant amounts of money going into housing, sewer works, roadworks, water and electricity infrastructure. “We’re also very pleased with the R1.2 million which will go into Phase 2 of the Lakeside Library, this money will be used for furniture and IT infrastructure, as the building phase is expected to be completed within this financial year by end May. “We will also continue the great work in Sicelo by building a football field worth R1.5million at their Sports Complex. Contractors will be on site in May 2014 and completion is expected in September 2014,” said Baloyi. The new portfolios are as follows: Speaker: Councillor Freddie Peters, MMC Finance: Councillor Pat Pretorius, MMC Social Services: Councillor Rob Jones, MMC Development, Planning & Housing: Councillor Solly Nkhi, MMC Engineering : Councillor Dennis Ryder, MMC Protection & HR: Councillor Malcolm Hack, Chief Whip: Councillor Phil Pretorius

BOIPATONG.- Gauteng Community Safety is a government department established under the Gauteng provincial government with the objective to ensure safety and security within the Gauteng province. The department specifically deals with the issues of safety and security through overseeing the operations of law enforcement agencies. National Child Protection Week (CPW) is commemorated in South Africa annually to raise awareness of the rights of children as articulated in the Children’s Act of 2005. In partnership with the South African Police Services (SAPS) they held a Child Protection Week Open Day for children between the ages of 5 and 7 in Boipatong last week. They targeted 300 children who are in primary school and crèches. The department targeted all the crèches in

and around the area, mainly because many children are afraid of the police, therefore making it difficult for them to report abuse. Different speakers that included theEmfuleni Local Municipality MMC for Safety Veli Mcera, Lieautenant Colonel Radebe and the Boipatong SAPS Captain Makhene talked about issues of children’s rights and child safety. The speakers also had the opportunity to have a face-to-face interaction with children and made sure that they understand the importance of reporting abuse. Child abuse is a serious issue in the townships, especially where children have no right to say No. Examples that were made by the speakers include sending children to taverns to buy alcohol, sending them to shops at night with no one accompanying them. A very important issue that Mcira cited is that children should stop taking sweets from elderly men because it might lead to be rape or murder. He said, “Children in South Africa live in a society with a constitution that has the highest regard for their rights and for the equality and dignity of everyone. Protecting children from violence, exploitation and abuse is not only a basic value, but also an obligation clearly set out in Article 28 of the South African Constitution. The aim of child protection is to ensure the safety, well-being, care and protection of children through an integrated multi-disciplinary approach.”

Priest arrested for rape of 14yearold ORANGE FARMS.- Trust the ‘holy men’ but not too much as most are wolves in sheep clothing. A 49-year-old Apostolic Church priest was arrested last week and charged with the rape of a 14-yearold church member. It is said that the alleged rape of the Grade 8 learner took place on a Sunday when the victim went to church in Orange Farms Extension 10. At the church the pastor is said to have told the victim not to leave after the church service. Little did the young girl know that the worst was about to happen. Police Spokesperson Captain Maloyi Polo says that the victim apparently followed the clergyman’s instructions and after the service the two headed to the pri-
est’s house. Along the way the priest told the young girl that he loved her and gave her R100 and promised her a further R500 if she accepted his proposal. “It is further said that the priest instructed the young victim to undress, but the victim refused. The pastor apparently got angry and forcefully undressed the victim before he raped her. Thereafter he allegedly instructed her not to tell anyone about the rape,” Polo adds. The victim broke the heartbreaking news to her parents last week and the matter was reported to the Orange Farms Police. Upon investigation the suspect was arrested and charged with the rape of the minor.
VANDERBIJLPARK.- The Vanderbijlpark SAPS is investigating a theft case following an incident in which the alleged suspect took money from a victim without delivering the promised services. A warrant of arrest was recently issued and police are urgently searching for the suspect. It is alleged that the suspect in the case promises services pertaining to driving school services and assisting with the obtaining of licences for motor vehicles. The suspect then takes money from the client (s) and does not deliver the agreed services. The Vanderbijlpark SAPS is searching for the alleged suspect, Robert De Sousa Diaz (27), after a warrant of arrest was issued in this regard. It is suspected that he is in the vicinity of Vereeniging. Anyone with information about Diaz is requested to contact the investigating officer in the case, Detective Warrant Officer Reynold Smit on (016) 910 9031 or 082 553 7901. Other victims of this alleged scam are also requested to contact Detective Warrant Officer Smit.

apparently went to some occupied houses and threatened owners to vacate. Everything immediately flew out of control when the evacuated families regrouped and called for backup from Kwa-Masiza Hostel. The action angered members of the community and a fight ensued. The alleged MKMVA members were beaten severely. It has been alleged that an Emfuleni Local Municipality security officer conveyed them to hospital in an official vehicle. Residents now say they are living in fear. Police have made no arrests. Mcera said an investigation is under way to find out whether the officer was on duty, and where he was posted on the day.“We will check out from whom the officer received permission to use the bakkie” he said.

BOIPATONG. - The government says the right to vote is the right to keep those in power accountable and to uphold democracy. The ANC says the time for elections is over and it’s about time for the government to sleeve up and do what they have committed themselves to do for the people. The residents of Snake Park, Extension 2 Boipatong, say they have received no joy from Ward 8 Councillor Mabandla Ronyuza and the Emfuleni Local Municipality, ELM. They did not mince words after casting their votes recently, saying they deserve service delivery just as much as other areas. To add salt to the wound, the community say they do not feel any `wind of change’ blowing in their direction following their democratic vote. Moipone Motsemme and the others claim to be in possession of the approval letters, but they are stuck in a shack. The municipality in the year 2000 supplied them with `temporary’ flushing toilets. Ronyuza said there are 65 stands with 35 residents to be moved out of Snake Park. “They know they have to be allocated somewhere due to the dire, muddy conditions of the area: “Residents have been told but they are trying to play political games. The Department of Human Settlements does not want people to live in health-hazard conditions with no proper services,” says Ronyuza.

Stop whining and grow up
9R_Na\ @R_R_\ Now that the political speeches have been made and they are about to be archived, it is time to get down to tough work. After a serious analysis of the different political speeches that have been made recently I have to agree with one person that convinced those that he was in conversation with that some people are ungrateful and are serious whi-
ners, particularly young people. As we enter the month of June that is commonly known as ‘Youth Month’, leave the whiners behind and focus on the issues at hand- the development of young people in this country and Sedibeng at large. June is one important month on our calendar and for the government. This means that the government must make time to reach out to the youth, to listen to issues that they may be having, especially those issues that will help benefit them and their community. The government must not merely come and

Many a time the youth is also at fault - You find that they have been taken out of a difficult situation and given a lifeline but they become the ones that complain. We cannot walk alone: Pitso
Lazarus Dithagiso
BOIPATONG. - It all begins with Early Childhood Development (ECD). “The sky is the limit for all, as we cannot walk alone” said Emfuleni Local Municipality MMC for Health, Councillor Sello Pitso. Pitso says he is adamant that the ECDs started a good foundation to make it easy for primary schools, secondary schools and tertiary institutions to produce leaders of the future. He adds the ECDs have to be recognised and be given attention in terms of assistance to access the stands for building. He said the region is surrounded by big companies. Some treat non-profit organisations (NGOs) with disdain by undermining them. When the ECDs apply for sponsors from big companies, they are shut down. He pointed out the high numbers of township people shopping at the big stores. He said they get nothing in return: ‘Put your money where your mouth is.’ Speaking during a two-day ECD workshop hosted by the Early Child Development Forum at Boitshepiville, May 29, Pitso requested owners of the ECDs to identify empty land belonging to the municipality and to submit application forms at his office. “Some empty stands have been rezoned as a community facility for the ECD,” he said. Creche owners struggle because they don’t have access to in-
formation on empty stands. Municipal staff need to be capacitated as leadership in government so they know how to deal with issues of ECD. Nomalanga Nkaota, chairperson of the forum, said the purpose of the workshop was to train the chairpersons of the ECDs to teach their members how to comply in terms of the
norms and standards. She said they started with a roadshow to listen to complaints from the creches. Emfuleni Fire led by E Mashiloane were invited for motivation. Mashiloane advised the principals to be very cautious of fire, to always be on the lookout for safety assembly-points during fire, to move away from operating in shacks.

EVATON. - Elderly people who are poor and live alone or with dependent children find themselves vulnerable, powerless and are sometimes neglected by their family or
grown-up children. Many are too old or physically weak, unable to find work and are often homeless. Gwen Maseko (71) from Evaton in partnership with Jamiatul Ulama recently visited the Jordaan High Shool whe-
re they donated food parcels and blankets to 120 needy people who live around the area. This initiative started 14 years ago when Maseko decided to do something to give back to her community. Apparently she is doing this good deed out of kindness and love for the elderly. She says, “I always ask my good Lord how I can help people, so the donated goods from the Islamic Church is just a bonus. I hope they can do more so others get what the elderly are getting. This is my way of showing how much I care for my community and want other organisations or businesses to do the same,” Says Maseko. The winter distribution for those in need is an ongoing project that helps the poor stay warm during the winter. VANDERBIJLPARK.- Sedibeng entrepreneurs have the potential to take this region higher. This is also good in contributing towards job creation. Opportunities are there in the export and import markets. Mini Cooper Club gives Tsholo and Josy were stars of the night back to the community sed to witness such a sparkling initiative for a good cause. The convoy started at Orange Farms Park and went to the home, where, at each and every stop sign, motorists had to give way for these small, dynamic cars. Sam Mamatela from Red Cross Federation says they were very honoured to be a part of an initiative so overwhelmingly supported by young people: “We received a call and we joined in with the miniacs. It was a great pleasure to help out. We have cleaned the home and cooked for the children. Spending time with these children was heart-warming,” says Mamatela. Speaking on behalf of the miniacs Tumi Aphane, who also opened the occassion with a prayer, says, “It is not by their mind or wisdom, but by God’s grace, that they have what they have. What we have is a need to give back to the community. It’s always a good feeling to give back to those who are in greater need than you. We love you children.” Phumlaphi Masuku was very humbled by the miniacs and gifts they brought to the centre: “I would like to thank God for you. STATE OF THE DISTRICT ADDRESS

went on to say that, “the election of such an esteemed individual in a position of this magnitude is an expression of the government's dedication on moving the Gauteng province into a Global City Region.”
Sedibeng Executive Mayor - MS Mofokeng
Delivers his State of the District Address
On the 28 May 2014, the Sedibeng District Municipality held the State of The District Address at the Vereeniging Civic Theatre. This momentous occasion was followed by the Mayoral Awards which is one of the most prestigious events in the Sedibeng region. Executive Mayor of Sedibeng District Municipality, Cllr. Mahole Simon Mofokeng took this opportunity to congratulate the newly appointed Premier of Gauteng: Mr. David Makhura on his appointment as Premier. He

Mayoral Awards
The Mayor alluded to the bold decisions that were made in order to help improve the living standards of the people. “We must always muster the courage to take bold decisions to bring about meaningful change” said the Executive Mayor. Although many households face a high cost of living, a 20-year review of the Gauteng province since 1994 shows a significant transformation in the majority of people of this region when compared to the past. With this year marking the 20th celebration of our democracy, it becomes imperative that we make mention of the past ills of our country, that is the geographic separation that was imposed by the apartheid regime. In his speech the Mayor spoke about Spatial Developments which started in 1994 linking black communities to towns and work places, an example for these developments is the K-55 route which joins Steelpark via Boipatong and Sharpeville to Vanderbijlpark. Although there's still a substantial divide amongst our people; these divisions are not due to race, gender or religion. They are instead caused by financial limits,
which form part of the current struggle: The struggle for economic development. In efforts to eradicate poverty and lessen the gap between Life Standard Measures there are many developments in the district that have eased the scourge of unemployment by creating jobs and ensuring a steady growth with regards to general economy of the country. Savannah City in Midvaal is die to bring 18 000 new houses in a mixed housing development, this development will attract more investors into the region. Other developments in the District include: The Klipriver Business Park along the R59; Shopping Centers along the R57 are being developed into fully fledged Malls; The development Zone between Vereeniging and Vanderbijlpark is constantly developing into a business centre and Lesedi's Zone of o p p o r t u n i t y. T h e s e a re s o m e o f t h e developments that have helped the district's unemployment rate drop by 12% as per StatsSA in its 2011 Census. The aforementioned economical aspects of the district are an expression of how Sedibeng has evolved from an economy that was monopolized by manufacturing companies to an economy that is not solely dependent on metal companies such as Mittal. Sedibeng has, reinvented its
economy and has grown other sectors that have helped classify the District as diverse and adaptable. One aspect of our diversification that should be highlighted is the flourishing tourism industry that has proved to be formidable. The Sedibeng District Municipality is therefore considering various ways that will help to steadily grow the tourism industry. “Our Tourism Sector continues to grow steadily and we will launch an innovative project which we have dubbed the Passport Project.” Said the Executive Mayor. The Mayor added, “In the build up to the Vaal Metro, it is important that such developments are recognised and highlighted. It is these expressions that justify the decision to merge our locals and these developments are necessary for the sustainability of a Metropolitan City.” The State of the District Address is a report back to the people on past achievements and future plans of the District and the information that was relayed by the Mayor: Cllr. Mahole Simon Mofokeng, was relevant and absorbing. Sedibeng District Municipality continuous to mend the past and is ready for the transition into a Metropolitan River City.
In a glittering event that followed the State of the District Address, the 3rd Annual Mayoral Awards was held at the Vereeniging City Hall. The event was graced by a host of dignitaries from the world of business, sport, politics and the clergy. The programme was jointly directed by popular TV personality Leanne Manas and Local Radio Disc Jockey Molamu Makola. In a rousing performance that brought the audience to its feet, South African singing sensation Yvonne Chaka Chaka rendered a stunning musical performance that will long be remembered. In presenting the Mayoral Wards, the Executive Mayor, Cllr. Mahole Mofokeng urged the people of Sedibeng to strive for excellence and continue in their sterling efforts in making this region so rich and vibrant.

My Mondays will never be the same again!
Last Monday I waited with anticipation to watch a weekly soccer programme Extra Time on SuperSport 4 (SS4). I was disappointed when the programme’s host Robert Marawa announced that Isaac ‘Shakes’ Kungwane would be not appear in the show as he had been admitted to hospital.
Then I said to myself – I can’t wait for his return come next Monday, as the show was boring without him. But the next thing I heard was the sad news that the man loved by so many viewers had passed away. I was getting ready for to work when I heard the news that ‘Kasi Flavour’ - the name by which Kungwane was known on the show - was no more. I was confused because the man had looked strong and healthy on the previous shows. Then Shooting From The Hip remembered how Neil Jansen had passed away, too. The news came as a shock because no-one could have expected that someone who so recently appeared strong and healthy would go so soon. To be honest, Extra Time will never be the same again. Kungwane was a real cha-
racter, making jokes regardless of how serious the debate. He used to speak his mind on the show and he was a ‘darling’ to many viewers. Shooting From The Hip is not the only one who will miss Shakes’s jokes. Everyone who followed the programme will miss him. The programme was one of the most popularly viewed because of this man, who used to mesmerise soccer fans with his skills while still playing for Kaizer Chiefs. Those with a good memory will recall how Paul Dolezar used to say of him, “Shakes confused my players; he would look one way but pass somewhere else.” That’s how Shakes used to entertain soccer fans with his unique soccer skills. He was a crowd-puller. He truly entertained with his God-given ta-
lent, soccer. He was one of the few players who made their professional debut during the then ‘Iwise’ Charity Cup in the 1990s. This was one tournament that used to discover unknown players and Shakes was the best kept secret. He was introduced into South African football through the competition. He would tell everyone who cared to listen that the kind of football played by Bafana Bafana or PSL clubs has added no value to South African football, especially to soccer fans. He believed in entertaining football where skill was the order of the day. We will miss this motor-mouthed legend and the jokes he used to crack on the show. May his soul rest in peace!

ZAMDELA. - Credo Primary School will represent Free State in the Danone u/12 National scheduled to take place at Boksburg in Johannesburg on June 28. The school has already started preparing, playing friendly matches against local teams and academies in Zamdela and Sedibeng. Not many gave the school a chance, taking into consideration that the school is coached by female coach Dikeledi Sothoane, who is also a teacher at the school. She is assisted by other female teachers. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sport, Sothoane was unbeaten about their chance to fi-
nish in a respectable position in the tournament. She was full of compliments for the support she received from the school’s principal and her colleagues. She also thanks the Zamdela community, especially coaches who also contributed to the success of the school. “I’m very proud with what we have achieved as a school and we will represent Free State with dignity. Our aim is to make our presence felt in the tournament. We might be an unknown school when it comes to soccer, but we will show the world what kind of stern stuff we are made of. The boys are looking forward to the tournament,” says the excited Sothoane.
Sothoane says they will be playing a few friendly matches against local teams to make sure that the boys are ready for the tournament. She believes that there is a serious need for the boys to play in as many friendly matches as they can before the tournament. She adds, “I know some of our opponents will undermine us just because we are women coaches, but they would be making a grave mistake to think that we will be sheep going to the slaughter. Yes, we are women but that doesn’t mean we don’t have knowledge when it comes to coaching. The fact that we qualified for the nationals must be a warning to other schools.”
EVATON. - Kgokgi Sports Foundation will host Pooe’s June 16 Fund Raising Tournament scheduled to take place at the Beherman Rover Grounds in Evaton from June 14 - 16. Apart from fund raising, the tournament also commemorates June 16. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sport, tournament coordinator Mondli Nkosi says the tournament is part of fund raising for a charity organisation that has yet to be identified as the beneficiary. The tournament involves senior soccer teams and the u/17s. The winner in the senior soccer team event will walk away with R16 000, a trophy and medals, while second-place will receive R4 000 and medals. The winner in the u/17 will receive R2 000, a trophy and medals, while second-place will go home with R1 000 and medals. Third-place will get R600 and medals. Nkosi says they invite all Gauteng teams to come and be part of this tournament – the first of its kind to take place in Sedibeng to date. He says Kgokgi Sports Foundation cares about the needy in this region: “All the teams are invited but it’s first-come, first-serve. The tournament is to raise funds for Evaton charity organisations. As the foundation, we want to help improve the lives of ordinary people in this region. I have no doubt that this tournament will be a success, taking into consideration that it’s for charity purposes,” says Nkosi. Teams are invited to attend a meeting scheduled to take place at Pooe Bottle Store in Evaton on Friday at 17:00. * For more information contact Mondli Nkosi at 073 078 6823.

VANDERBIJLPARK. - South Africa’s women’s national soccer team, Banyana Banyana, will take on Botswana at Isak Steyl Stadium on Saturday. The game kicks off at 15:00. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sport, Safa Sedibeng general secretary Star Hlongwane has appealed to Sedibeng soccer fans to come

in numbers to fill the stadium to capacity. Hlongwane says this is an opportunity for local soccer fans to come and see their favourite players in action. The last time Banyana Banyana played in this region was almost five years ago when they played at the Boipatong Stadium. “We make a special request to Sedibeng soccer fans to come in numbers to support

our women’s national team. “We as Safa Sedibeng are humbled to host a game of this magnitude in our region. “It has been a while since we hosted high-profile games in this region and this game has come at the best time. We are looking forward to seeing some exciting football,” says Hlongwane.
Its not yet official but Vaal Milano FC are SAB Champions! Zacharia Nale
SEDIBENG. - As things stand, Vaal Milano is destined to be crowned the Safa Sedibeng SAB League champions. This Sharpeville-based side beat The Birds and United Scientist FC 2-0 respectively in the league match over the weekend. Vaal Milano are the Safa Sedibeng SAB current log leaders with 71 points from 27 games, while “The Students” are in second place with 61 points from the same number of games. VUT FC’s recent defeat at the hands of bottom-of-the log Hillside United FC and their weekend 0-0 draw against The Birds has given Vaal Milano FC the league championship title on a silver platter. If VUT FC wins all their remaining games and Vaal Milano lose theirs - they will still be crowned the Safa Sedibeng SAB League champions. This is a record that even a PSL team can be very proud of to play 25 games without any defeat. To date, Vaal Milano FC is in the SAB League for a second time after club owner Junior “My Leader” Gusha bought the SAB status two seasons ago. The club could make Sedibeng proud to campaign in the Motsepe League come next season. Not many gave Vaal Milano a chance in their debut season in the league. However, they made many eat humble pie when the club finished in fourth place. This is despite the fact that the team played with players young enough to play in Promotion League. VUT FC are themselves to be blamed for surrendering the league to Vaal Milano FC, taking into consideration that at one stage they were at the top of the log.
