SEBOKENG.- A sibling was left fuming recently after his brother was left with a gapping wound following his admittance to the Sebokeng hospital. The epileptic 46-year-old Martin Motsamai of Zone 7 was admitted and spent two weeks at the hospital after he suffered a seizure. According to the family a wound to the head led to him being admitted to the hospital, but following his admittance the family realised that he had obtained another serious injury to the head. The sibling Michael Motsamai was irate when he related the story to Sedibeng Ster. “I don’t understand how my brother can sustain another wound in the presence of nurses. How can he get hurt there where he is supposed to be healed,” says Michael, who adds that the additional injury was an outcome of negligence by the hospital. He adds by saying that when he found his brother with the injury to his head, the nurses were rude and did not even show concern or explain what had transpired. Emfuleni Health MMC Sello Pitso says they do get complaints about the hospital but it’s a provincial matter, so the municipality cannot comment on it. “I’m ready to fight for my brother’s rights. What happened to him is unacceptable and irresponsible. We want the hospital to be held accountable for this. This is how people die in the hands of public servants. I want the provincial government to take note of this hospital and its treatment of patients,” explains the furious Michael. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster, Sebokeng Hospital CEO Dr Zolela Ngcwabe confirmed the admission of the patient and said that they will investigate the negligence allegations. Motsamai was discharged on Friday with two wounds stitched on his head.

Volunteers to serve the community
Mduduzi Mathebula
VEREENIGING. - Red Cross Federation under the leadership and guidance of Vereeniging authorities embarked on a voluntary cleaning and washing work campaign on Thursday at the Meyerton Fire Department. Due to a busy schedule during winter - a high risk period - fire fighters are constantly in demand. Chairperson Mahlomola Mamatela from Red Cross says they volunteered a helping hand to the fire department: “We clean up their fire engines and their fireproof clo-
thes,” Mamtela says. They had local volunteers from Sicelo and Meyerton helping out. Mamatela says it was a great privilege to see young people volunteering. Pokgicho Sekgobebe, a Meyerton youth, says it was a good initiative to help firefighters and see how hard they work to save lives. “I am glad I am part of such a prestigious initiative - to clean and wash fire engines and clothes,” says Sekgobebe. The Fire and Rescue Department was pleased and thankful to be part of an event of this magnitude.

Evaton CPF appreciated for their hard work
EVATON.- Community Policing Forum (CPF) is a partnership between the police and the community to solve safety problems. These people are normally volunteers who sacrifice their time and lives to make sure that communities are safe. 100 Evaton CPF patrollers were recently pampered with hampers that contained sugar, maize meal, rice and cooking oil by Mohammed, a Muslim who always gives back to poor communities. Local businessmen around the community were challenged to donate food parcels to the patrollers, but only
foreign nationals responded. These patrollers work night and day without any compensation. Their love and dedication for protecting communities is what they take home every day. Some of them are parents and their children expect them to bring something home after work so these hampers will help them and make them feel that they are appreciated. Captain Nombusiselo Mnxuma from Social Crime Prevention says, “The CPF is providing communities with a visible, accessible policing presence to enhance public confidence in the police and deterring criminals.”

Reclaiming our streets
SEBOKENG. - The chairperson of the Sebokeng Youth Crime Prevention Desk, Patrick Kheswa, stated that it was important to prevent drug abuse in public places. The Youth Desk partnered with the Department of Community Safety Sedibeng, Sebokeng SAPS, Soul Provider, Progressive Youth, Vaal Injectors and Royal Entertainment to conduct a ‘Reclaiming Our Streets Campaign. The event aimed to discourage drug abuse in local areas, but especially at the Zone 11 park. Kheswa says, “Drug abuse is a huge challenge in our community. We have girls as young as 12 years old smoking `nyaope.’ They even turn to prostitution just to feed their habit.” Kheswa added that the park has already become a drug spot. “We are facing an issue whereby kids are not able to play in the park anymore because there are always nyaope smokers roaming
around. It is no longer safe. Not so long ago a man was murdered in this very same park,” Kheswa said. Kheswa also stated that the park would from now on be used on a regular basis for functions that aim to bring positivity into the community. A stop-and-search was conducted on Friday prior to the event and as a result many young people who were found in possession of drugs were arrested. Tebello Mokoena from Vaal Injectors says, “This event has had a big impact on us and we hope that it has had the same impact on the community. Today for the first time in a long while, the park was alive with kids playing and the youth engaging in converstions on how they would be reclaiming their streets from criminals and drug abusers.” The function ended on a high note with music, dance and performances taking centre stage.

When asked if they buy electricity the angry mob wanted to attack this journalist even before the interview ended. “All we need is electricity,” says Jabulani Mavuso. This strike has spread to neighbouring areas. Evaton and Sebokeng Eastern Roads were also packed to capacity from its entrance while Beverly Hill had degenerated into mayhem, closing the Golden Highway. On the other side, residents of Zone 12 obstructed Moshoeshoe Road, making it difficult for road-users to enter and get out of the famous road. All these residents wanted their story heard and their actions seen as they promised to protest until Jesus comes.

Three injured in horrific accident
Mduduzi Mathebula
BOIPATONG. - Two passengers survived serious injuries when their car was allegedly hit from behind by a speeding police officer. The officer was rushed to hospital instantly following the accident. It occurred on Tuesday evening when the two survivors had to be examined by
paramedics who were deployed to the scene. Apparently the victim’s car was parked on the side of the road towards Acerlor Mittal Road from Sebokeng. It is alleged that ‘the victims’ were about to enter the main road. While they were off the road, the marked police car hit their car from behind and it overturned. Upon Sedibeng Ster’s arrival, both cars were still at the scene, while paramedics and traffic officers were trying to control the traffic jam. The police vehicle was standing metres away from the scene, while the victim’s car turned upside down on the side of the road. The two injured people were subsequently taken to hospital.

MOA between VUT and LGSETA Lazarus Dithagiso
VANDERBIJLPARK. - The Local Government Sector Education and Training Authority (LGSETA) and Vaal University of Technology (VUT) signed a memorandum of agreement at VUT Lapa recently. Nqaba Nqandela of LGSETA said the LGSETA is a sector education and training authority established in terms of the Skills Development Act. Its objective is to contribute to social and economic development and growth by enabling education and training in the local government sector of the economy. This is for the benefit of employers, employees and unemployed people, said Nqandela, an administrator of the LGSETA. The VUT was represented by Vice Chancellor Professor Irene Moutlana. The parties have the mutual objective of stimulating and strengthening research development, innovations, skills development, education and training in the local government sector. The terms and conditions of the agreement are that the parties shall achieve an objective through the identification of required and necessary interventions and the monitoring and evaluation of their impact. Moutlana said the primary objective of the agreement is to ensure the implementation of the programme in order to enhance the skillsbase of the beneficiaries. The programme will focus on the areas for management and leadership development, infrastructure, service delivery, community-based participation, plan-
ning, research, financial management, workplace training systems, adult education and training. She adds that VUT has various departments with established research and training capacities that can be harnessed to meet the objectives of the National Skills Development Strategy (NSDS). Strategic Partnerships will be the driving force in promoting sustainable, fruitful, solutions-driven, integrative efforts between national skills development and higher education. “Speaking of partnership, we mean between employers and public education institutions. Priority will be given to strengthening the relationship between colleges and universities, Setas, as well as employers. “The most important aspect, is the intangible value of the relationship we are building as partners.’ Partnerships are purposive strategic relationships between independent partners who share compatible goals, strive for mutual benefit and acknowledge a high-level of mutual interdependence. There are four aspects - ‘commitment, co-ordination, interdependence and trust. If there’s lack of communication between the partners, accuracy, timeliness, adequacy and credibility, will be fruitless,” She says. In his response, Mqandela said the vision of the LGSETA is to be the foremost SETA producing an extraordinary skilled and capable local government sector: “We are making significant progress in building a highly responsive organisation. I believe that a mutual rewards partnership of both
parties will be highly celebrated,” he said adding that local government provides democratic and accountable government for communities
and that it ensures the provision of services to the community in a suitable manner and protects socio-economic development.

Thabong Good Health Pharmacy brings you Good News The Thabong Good Health Pharmacy Group’s commitment to the community is one that goes beyond the call of duty. This was apparent when they donated a total of 120 pairs of shoes to various schools around the region such as Iphahlolleng Primary School in Zone 14, Siviwe Primary School in Zone 10 and Boiketlong Christian Primary School in Boiketlong. The aim of the day was to give back to the needy and those from poor backgrounds. The managing director of the Thabong Good Health Pharmacy Group Khathutshelo Makhomisani says that when he was young, he also had to walk barefoot to school because he did not have shoes and school uniform, which is the main reason he decided to donate shoes to needy school children. “I want to encourage these kids to love school because your futures are not determined by your backgrounds. It is very painful to see a child go to school without proper school shoes. When we called around the schools to ask what was needed the most, the answer we got was that most of the kids did not have proper school shoes.” “We at the Thabong Good Health Pharmacy encourage kids to go to school and get their education, which is why we want to make them look presentable in order to encourage them to learn even harder.” Iphahlolleng Primary School teacher and co-ordinator for needy children Josephine Sekese says, “I am truly thankful for what we have received on this day. The majority of kids that come to this school are from struggling homes and their parents cannot afford to buy them proper school uniforms.” “We are always happy to see fortunate members of the community give back to those that are less fortunate.” Sekese concludes. There is a purpose to life 9R_Na\ @R_R_\
I recently found out that it takes a long time for some people to reflect on what’s happening in their lives, whether they want change and even if they really know what the future
holds for them. In short I have realised that some people live for today, forget yesterday and hope for tomorrow. For some, being on Earth is to wake up in the morning, “do your thing” during the day and go to bed at night, then repeat it all the next day; with no in-depth analysis into what life is about. For others, being on Earth is about experiencing life, being glad you are alive and looking forward to the next day because it has meaning for you. In some way some people’s lives have no meaning. I believe that everyone has been given a purpose for their lives
and theirs is just to realise this. There are things in this world though that make people to give up and not decide about the future. Yes, sometimes it’s just best to accept what’s done is done, let it go and move on and know that tomorrow is a new day and what you thought was the end might just be your new beginning. But total introspection is always important. We all have talents and abilities to make an impact on this world. I think it is important for all of us to take time to discover our passions and dreams. We all want to know why we exist.
We’re all called. If you’re here breathing, you have a contribution to make to our human community. The real work of your life is to figure out your function—your part in the whole—as soon as possible, and then get about the business of fulfilling it as only you can. The world is made a better place one step at a time by each one of us taking the time to be considerate and caring. It really doesn’t take much effort on our part and the benefits are well worth it. Find purpose for your life, try it, you might like it! Lerato...
Kidnapping of Lesedi budget and girls is senseless tariff hikes cause for concern and barbaric SANCO Regional Chairperson, Motsamai Maphalla writes, My starting point is that to describe the girls as ‘slaves’ who would be sold and by parading them on video is a crime against humanity. The Nigerian police, by banning protesters in the capital Abuja concerning a group of schoolgirls abducted by Boko Haram, saying they could be hijacked by ‘dangerous elements’, is irresponsible and low because it is a display of solidarity. As a civil society movement we are joining the international campaign to get the girls freed and condemning this senseless act in the strongest terms. We also commend the pledges and international support to rescue the girls by the United States and other nations’ missions to find them. We therefore demand their immediate release.

Johan Bester, AfriForum Chair: Heidelberg branch writes The Heidelberg branch of the civil rights organisation AfriForum has called the proposed budget of the Lesedi Local Municipality outrageous after an 18% hike in property taxes was announced by the municipality. The branch will contract local government specialists to compile an urgent budget report on the hikes. The sharp rise in property taxes appears to be a desperate effort by the municipality to cover up a poor fiscal performance and internal mismanagement. Tax payers are now expected to fund this effort. Should the report find that the municipality has acted unlawfully, an ultimatum will be put to the Lesedi Local Municipality to amend the budget. AfriForum has also undertaken to act against the mayor and municipal manager should infrastructure collapse as a result of poor maintenance and insufficient provision in the budget. The approach followed by AfriForum is to act responsibly against inept and dishonest municipalities. Heidelberg residents who want solutions to problems and a self-help ability in their community are welcome to join the organisation.

Roshnee Islamic Services donates blankets
Pinky Mofokeng
EVATON. - Community-based organisation Roshnee Islamic Services collected funds from the Muslim community of Roshnee, Dadaville & Arcon Park for distribution of high quality blankets in the surrounding communities. They distributed 105 blankets at a pensioners’ club in Evaton West Extension 3 and Busy Bee Hospice in Vanderbijlpark. Roshnee Islamic Services worked under the sponsorship of the Gauteng Branch of Darul Ihsan Islamic Services Centre, which provided the blankets, advertising and logistics. They hope to grow this in time. Rashaad Dhai from the organisation says, “It is truly humbling that we were afforded the opportunity to distribute these blankets to the communities closest to us, as charity begins at home. Charity is a fundamental teaching of Islam and we are taught that, by assisting those in need, God will assist us in this world and the ultimate Hereafter. Islam teaches us not to distinguish along any racial or religious lines, as can be seen by today where all members of the community (regardless of race or religious background) were given high quality blankets.” Emfuleni Local Municipality executive mayor Councillor Greta Hlongwane also took time to make this event special for the patients at the Busy Bee Hospice and the pensioners club in Evaton. The head of Darul Ihsan Islamic Services Centre (Mufti Zubair Bayat) says, “With a slightly altered quote from JF Kennedy: it is not what the Ummah (Arabic word for nation/community) can do for you, it is what you can do for the Ummah”.

At 21; Shirley Moloi, a Candidate Technician at ArcelorMittal Vanderbijlpark Works, has fulfilled her potential. Her success is the culmination of her long-standing association with ArcelorMittal South Africa. Despite her straitened family circumstances, Shirley excelled at her Grade 10 studies and was approached by ArcelorMittal South Africa in Sebokeng as one of top 40 students in the district to attend the centre and have access to the mobile Science Lab. Unsurprisingly, and in line with our commitment to fulfill human potential, we awarded her a bursary to study at the Vaal University of Technology. We’re proud to have Shirley as our poster girl for success.

SEDIBENG - The Miss ‘Face of Vaal’ auditions saw beauties hailing from all over the region. This was to try out to be one of the finalists who will compete to be crowned Miss Face of Vaal 2014 in the agegroups 4 to 10 and 15 to 25. The pageant was founded in 2005 by Vinolia Mabele and Mpho Monethi to place the Vaal on the map by introducing a pageant that aims to promote aspiring models by giving them a platform from which they can learn about the world of modelling. “We are searching for a beauty who is a true reflection of the Vaal Triangle and what it represents. Even more, we are also searching for someone who will be committed to serving the community through charity work,” says Mabele. Mabele adds that the pageant does not discriminate against plus-size models as they are also welcome. “This is not only an opportunity for models and aspiring models: we are also looking for dancers and performers, and we encourage people to enter.” Mabele adds. The next Miss Face of Vaal auditions will take place at the Thabong Shopping Complex on June 28. For more info or to enter go to face book and like ‘Miss Face of Vaal’.

Vaal Echoes of Love celebrates 10 years
Pinky Mofokeng
SHARPEVILLE. - Vaal Echoes of Love (VEOL) is a welfare organisation, which deals with the overall impact of the HIV/Aids pandemic in the Vaal Triangle and surrounding areas. They recently celebrated 10 years of existence. The organisation is based in Sharpeville, strategically positioned to ensure optimum accessibility to communities that experience the maximum impact of the Aids scourge. The organisation is currently engaged in a number of projects and has also established strategic partnerships with organisations with similar objectives - reducing the spread of HIV/Aids, caring for Frail and Palliative Older Persons, as well as working together with or-
ganisations that are dedicated to ensuring that the rights of older persons and orphans are upheld. Sello Sehanka, the organisations manager, could not restrain tears as he explained how the place came into existence. It was a very emotional moment and he could not talk but his visitors understood that happiness can also make you very emotional. Martha Tseke, an employee, explained how the organisation was started. She says, “It was not easy as I was very young when I started here. Mr Sehanka made sure that everything ran smoothly, but irrespective of the challenges we faced, I am here because of the passion I have for elderly people.”
Vaal Echoes of Love members each received a certificate of appreciation during the 10year celebration recently. Photo: Pinky Mofokeng.

No to ‘nyaope’ and dagga smokers in our football!
Don’t tell me it’s this time again! With the Safa Sedibeng election scheduled to take place in September, some local administrators have already started with their campaigns. This time around, Shooting From The Hip won’t make any predictions as to who will or should be Safa president. Shooting From The Hip’s memory is still fresh from what happened last year, with the so-called ‘Mr Cool’ parading me naked on social media for being against how some Safa officials use local coaches and administrators ahead of the Safa national elections. Shooting From The Hip wants to make it clear – no one will get a platform for the wrong reasons in this publication. If Shooting From
The Hip may ask: why do people have to campaign to be elected? Is football the same as politics? Shooting From The Hip is worried – one of these days our football will be run by ‘nyaope’ or dagga smokers. Watch this space! Gone are the days when football was run by respected football administrators who know the door of the classroom, and were educated. More recently, the trend is that anyone can run football even though he or she doesn’t know which direction the class-
room door faces. In fact, as far as administration is concerned, this region is cursed. The last time football administrators commanded respect in this region was during the times of Molefi Oliphant, Knocks Matjila, George Thabe, Nathan Flaum, Eric Moya, Paul More and Ishmael Maseli, to mention but a few. Of late, however, this region just picks anybody up from the street to come and run our football. Sedibeng football is not respected anymore when it comes to administration. Maybe a standard should be set for anyone who wants
to be Safa President as far as academic status is concerned. It doesn’t mean anyone who clinched a matric certificate should qualify to be Safa President. NO! Oliphant was an academic and one of the few educated football administrators, not only in the Vaal but in South African football. So if there is anyone who thinks of being Safa Sedibeng President, it should be someone with football AND academic backgrounds. The fact of the matter is that some of our local footballers are aware many local soccer teams’ officials are not educated, so they manipulate teams to vote for them. How long will we continue to enrich other people through our football? This must come to an end, NOW!

Mtimkulu made history by taking the now-defunct Real Rangers to the last 16 of the Bob Save Cup in 2002. This was before Rangers suffered a 5-1 defeat at the hands of Maritzburg City at the Zamdela Stadium. The club was a household name in the Vaal campaigning in the Vodacom League before the team was relegated to the SAB League. The team was one of the best in this region - dominating local football. Professional soccer players produced by the team include former Bafana Bafana Captain Aaron ‘Mbazo’ Mokoena, Papi Zothwane, Lungisane Ndlela, Solomon Mathe and Senzo Mazingisa, to mention but a few. It was down memory lane on Saturday with these above-mentioned players reminding each other how their late coach, Cowzin Mtimkulu used

His sentiments were echoed by Mokoena who believes the tournament brought a lot of memories about time spent with Mtimkulu when he was alive.

Mokoena, who very recently retired from professional football still looked to be the strongest among his teammates, with Papi Zothwane still possessing the same skill with which he used to mesmerise Boipatong soccer fans. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sport, Zothwane says some of them would not have turned professional if it hadn’t been for Mtimkulu. He says Mtimkulu demanded the best from all the players during training sessions and mat-

Schools Winter Ball Games fun

VANDERBIJLPARK. - The Sedibeng West District (D8) schools battled it out in the annual Winter Ball Games at Shakespeare Stadium over the weekend. The sporting codes that form part of this annual event include soccer, volleyball, netball and rugby for both boys and girls. This tournament involved primary and secondary schools who had a ‘ball of a time’ on Friday and Saturday. The District Ball Games were held to determine the winners that will represent D8 in the Regional Winter Ball Games scheduled to take place at the Chris Hani Sports Complex in Orange Farm from July 26 – 27. This was according to D8 Senior Educational Specialist Nkoali Botsane. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sport, Botsane says this year’s event was more spectacular, with learners and teachers coming well prepared for the tournament. He believes that some of the schools have started to take sport seriously, unlike before. He says this is a positive step going forward as far as school sports is concerned. According to Botsane, the regional winners will represent Sedibeng at the provincial Winter Ball Games scheduled to take place in Pretoria in August. “I have no doubt that our schools will make us proud at provincial level, based on their performance yesterday and today. All the schools came here well prepared and I wish to thank the educators and principals for their support. It is also encouraging to see schools participate in this tournament in numbers compared to previous years. This shows how much schools appreciate the learners’ talent,” says Botsane. Other school tournaments are under way such as the Kay Motsepe School Cup. The tournament started last week at the various venues in Sedibeng. However, Botsane says
if they find any school that plays with overaged players or players that don’t belong to the school, they will be disqualifed from taking part in the tournament. To put things in grim perspective, some schools won the Kay
Motsepe Tournament with learners who did not belong to their school. But Botsane says they are well aware of such a practice at the schools and promise this will never happen again.
