Thabiso Mhlongo apparently hanged himself after he stole achaar at a su permarket in Sharpeville recently. Pinky Mofokeng
SHARPEVILLE. -The Masilo family was shocked and disgusted when a police officer came to their home to let them know that one of their family members had hanged himself. Thabiso Mhlongo (26) allegedly hanged himself after he stole a 500-gram container of ‘achaar’ at Mingo’s Supermarket and Wholesalers in Rooistene recently. After the stores’ employees spotted him stealing it and running away. They gave chase, caught him and brought him back to the shop, where
they allegedly assaulted him before locking him up in a storeroom. Mhlongo is originally from Bophelong and was only visiting a friend in Sharpeville when he met his death. Police were called to the store but arrived after Mhlongo was already dead. Apparently when the employees entered the storeroom to let him out they found him hanging from the roof. It appears Thabiso made a ‘rope’ out of the jersey he was wearing. Mhlongo’s family could not restrain tears as they were told of the death. They say it is impossible for him to have hanged himself over a small container of
achaar. According to them it could not be because of fear because it was not the first time he had been arrested. The family suspects that he was already dead when he was hanged. His sister Malifu Masilo says, “It was not necessary for them to kill my brother. His life was worth more than achaar. Why did they not wait for the police instead of locking him up in the storeroom. He did not deserve to die like a dog”. Police spokesperson Attie Leote confirms that an inquest has been opened by the Sharpeville Police.

Scrap-hunters’ heaven
Mduduzi Mathebula
BOIPATONG. - Police are investigating a case of reckless and negligent driving after a truck capsized at the Boipatong robots on Friday. It looked like a feeding frenzy after the truck overturned. Scrap-hunters flocked to the scene like locusts to a summer harvest. They waited expectantly as the truck-driver was taken care of by paramedics.
The traffic department responded to the scene quickly before the scrap-hunters could reach the capsized truck. Police spokesperson Constable Thembeka Koago says the case is being investigated. “We have opened a case of recklessness and negligent driving. The victim has been treated as he sustained minor injuries,” says Koago. Truck-driver Ndlebe says he lost control of

the truck due to scrap-hunters who climb onto the truck when most truck drivers reach the intersection. “I lost control of the truck because I was anticipating the scrap-hunters who always stand by the side of the road to steal scrap. It was unfortunate for me that I capsized and sustained minor injuries,” says Ndlebe, a 34year-old Free State driver. The scrap was reloaded onto another truck while the scrap-hunters were waiting for the traffic to leave the scene so they could get something. One scrap-hunter said: “People judge what we do, but we don’t care what people think and say about us. At the end of the day, a man has to do what a man has to do to survive.”

Church leader the Reverend Isaac Hlalele said that, as part of celebrating International Children’s Month, two books were issued by OCC, namely ‘The Greatest Gift’ and ’The Greatest Journey.’ With these books they will be able to minister to their peers, he said. The books teach about the creation. `The church is very happy and touched to see organisations taking care of the children. This could motivate them to grow up in the church, also to encourage their peers that there’s life in Christ. The Holy Pentecostal appreciates the love shown by OCC.

BOITUMELO. - Pastor Abigail Toodi, Gauteng provincial prayer coordinator of Operation Christmas Child Samaritan’s Purse’, brought smiles to the children of the Holy Pentecostal Apostolic Church, Boitumelo, when she donated bibles and boxes full of parcels. Pastor Toodi said Christ is the foundation and children are gifts from God. After presenting the children with gifts, she made them aware that the outside world is always thinking about how children are raised and taken care of in South Africa. ‘The outside world is glad to be associated with the Mzansi child-

SEBOKENG. - It has become clear that the fight against drug abuse in society can only be won if the community, police and government officials work together. The Saul Tsotetsi Sports Centre was packed beyond capacity when members of the community on Thursday honoured the invitation of Gauteng MEC Social Development, Faith Mazibuko to the Annual International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. The day was celebrated in conjunction with Sedibeng District Municipality, The Toughest Young Minds, the South African National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence and different non-governmental organisations in the Vaal.

The attendance volume alone proved that there is a crucial need for the fight to continue, as those who attended were affected in different ways. The Sedibeng region was named as a problem area as it has a high number of drug addicts, especially those addicted to the common ‘nyaope’ drug. Mazibuko says, “It is very important for the community to take action, especially against drug dealers who are busy killing our youth by selling them the nyaope drug. The government cannot win this fight on its own. The community needs to provide us with the information we need to put drug-dealers away.” Acting Sebokeng Police Station Commander Colonel Jacob Manamela states there are many complaints about drug suppliers and users who are left to go free, but this is due to lack of evidence to prove the case. “We need hard proof for our cases to be strong and I believe that the community can help us in this regard. I would like to urge you to work together with the Community Policing Forum (CPF) so that we can begin to put the dealers away for good.”

We don’t need drawing board but ‘training board’ The Brazil World Cup produced an incredible display compared to four years ago here in South Africa. Great goals are scored by great players and you can’t ask for more. This is the biggest showpiece in the world, in the calendar of world football - the World Cup. The only disappointment is the performance of African countries even though the likes of Nigeria and Algeria came through in the knockout stages. Yes, many might say the two countries have made history by proceeding to the last 16, but the real question is: How far have they gone? As for Ghana, Cameroon and Ivory Coast, they were in Brazil for a holiday as they offered little in the field of play. Cameroon was a disgrace to African football. The only thing the world will remember them for is their unprofessional behaviour. They deserve to be out of the tournament. These are the African countries that used to ‘rule’ in many European countries during Roger Milla’s era. Shooting From The Hip can still remember the 1990 Cameroon that shocked the world with its performance in the field of play. The cur-
rent Cameroon team should be ashamed of itself for putting the country on the world map - for all the wrong reasons. The performance of the African continent has something to do with the development of football, taking into consideration countries such as the Ivory Coast. Most Ivory Coast players were at the wrong side of their age, such as Drogba. Taking nothing away from Drogba. He played a significant role in Ivory Coast’s qualifier games, but Shooting From The Hip believes that it is also time for him to call it a day in international football. The same can be said
about South African Football even though we didn’t qualify for the World Cup. The age factor is the main problem with Bafana Bafana. My exact point is that African countries must do some introspection into the development of football on this continent. The question asked by Shooting From The Hip is -When will an African country win the World Cup? Shooting From The Hip is of the opinion that African countries were just happy to finish in the last 16 of the World Cup. In 2010 we hosted this biggest world showpiece, but even as a hosting nation we couldn’t proceed to the next round. It was embarrassing for the country as there was lot of expectation. It was an opportunity for African countries to make their presence felt in the 2010 World Cup, but we failed dismally. How long will African countries have to go back to the drawing board - every time we fail to impress in major tournaments like the World Cup? * We don’t need ‘the drawing board’ what we need is the ‘training’ board.
Safa Sedibeng bus in accident Zacharia Nale
SEDIBENG. - The future of Safa Sedibeng hangs in the balance after the regional bus was involved in an accident about a week ago. The bus was supposed to take the Safa Sedibeng Regional team to the Provincial U/21 Trials scheduled to take place in Johannesburg on June 21. According to a source the bus was supposed to collect the players but
they became suspicious when the bus never arrived. He said they then called the Safa Sedibeng League coordinator to find out what was happening with the bus as they had been waiting since early. “We called Ausi Beauty to find out about the bus and when we went to the driver’s home, we found him sleeping and the bus badly damaged. The driver was also injured and he
A Safa Sedibeng bus was involved in an accident, leaving coaches and players with their hands in their hair as they waited for hours for the bus to arrive.

claimed he had been involved in an accident. But it is not clear where the incident happened because the driver claimed he was in Muvhango at the time of the accident. A case was opened at Evaton Police Station. We had to hire taxis to go to the trials and we arrived there very late. We demand answers from Safa Sedibeng because the bus is finished as we speak,” says a source. This was confirmed to Sedibeng Ster Sports by the Safa Sedibeng Regional Secretary ‘Star’ Hlongwane, who says they are still waiting for a full report from the driver. Hlongwane says they are investigating the matter because it seems there is lot to it: “As the region we are investigating this matter because the bus was involved in the accident early in the morning and we don’t know where the bus driver came from. There are lots of things we don’t understand and we will also be working with the police to try and find out exactly what happened.” Hlongwane says that, as the region, they are very disappointed with the whole situation because the bus was supposed to take the children to the tournament. Unconfirmed allegations are that the bus driver was under the influence of alcohol when some of the Safa Sedibeng members arrived at his place on the day of the accident.
Player, coach, administrator he’s everything Zacharia Nale
VANDERBIJLPARK. - What Matome Frans Matlogo (51) has forgotten about basketball others still need to learn. As a skilled player, coach and administrator – with more than two decades of experience under his belt - Frans is a force to be reckoned with within the Department of Sport on the Vaal Triangle Campus of the North-West University (NWU Vaal). By coaching the campus’ volleyball, basketball and chess teams, he moulded them into competitors of note. He is passionate about sport and the role he is playing towards turning the NWU Vaal into a sporting campus. “There are very few competitive leagues in the Vaal Triangle region and therefore I take it upon myself to develop the necessary infrastructure,” says Matlogo, who adds that he plans to liaise with the Department of Education in this regard. According to Matlogo the current men’s team is very strong, but he is experiencing difficulty in organising a women’s team – the latter due to students completing their studies or leaving the area to pursue other interests. The campus currently competes in the Gauteng Universities Basketball League, but did not qualify for the USSA Championships due to changes made in the league stipulations. “The stipulations changed during the period when students were on recess and, as a result, we could not implement the new regulations in time,” says Matlogo. A recruitment drive is currently underway in the Pretoria league to address the shortcomings in the team. Matlogo’s life changed dramatically in 1983 when a knee injury signalled the end of his athletics career. During this time a former journalist from Pretoria News introduced him to basketball and the rest is – as they say - history. In 1996 he was the first-ever black basketball coach to win the national championship. During his illustrious 23-year career, Matlogo won a total of 35 championships and served as the national supporting coach during the All Africa Games and the Africa Cup. He also completed a Diploma in Sport Management at the then Randse Afrikaanse Universiteit (RAU). “My goal is to see NWU Vaal ranked as one of the top five basketball teams in the country. I would also like to start a basketball academy and realise my dream of setting up a bursary fund for talented and deserving students,” he concludes. Right: Frans Matlogo will help and coach up and coming athletes. at NWU.

Wonderboy Mahlangu keen to lock horns with the Namibian Mduduzi Mathebula

SEDIBENG. - It will be a battle of the titans when Bongani ‘Wonderboy’ Mahlangu from Boipatong locks horns with Abraham Nadaendaepo of Namibia on Saturday at Windhoek Country Club in Namibia. The WBA four-time winner and junior featherweight champion will have to outclass the Namibian Nadaendaepo in his country in front of his family and friends. Tactical fighter Mahlangu promises to bring the IBF African International Junior lightweight title home. Mahlangu has to win the title under his name and is not willing to lose either of them anytime soon; he would rather increase the size of his cabinet. The Boipatong boxer believes he is mentally prepared and will fight like a soldier at war to bring the title home. “I’m mentally and physically prepared to fight though this one came as a surprise; however, as a fighter and a soldier, I should always be ready for war,” says the undisputed junior featherweight champion in South Africa. Mahlungu trains at Roodepoort under the leadership of Kid Rass who manages him. He is trained by his brother Sandile Mahlangu. Mahlangu says he does not know much about his opponent. This will be a very close and tactical fight. “I don’t know much about him but I have seen him fight before, as much as he has seen me fight. All I need to do is not be excited about the fight but concentrate on the weakness every opponent has,” says Wonderboy Mahlangu.
Majakathata Masters crowned 2013/2014 season champions Zacharia Nale
SEBOKENG. - Majakathata Masters are the 2013/2014 Sedibeng Regional Masters League champions. The team was officially crowned during the recent league award ceremony held at the Saul Tsotetsi Sports Complex in Sebokeng’s Zone 14. Majakathata Masters had an outstanding season and it came as no surprise when they were crowned the league champions for their performance. Association President Bennet Mosebi presented the winners with a big trophy, medals and prize money. He was full of compliments not only for the winners but for all the teams in the league. “I was impressed with all the teams’ performances throughout the season. Yes, Majakathata might be the winner,
but to me we are all winners for making this league a success. I feel honoured to be the president of this league and I wish to thank all the teams for the role they played. We are looking forward to the new season and I want to believe that the competition will increase.” says Mosebi. His sentiments were echoed by Association Deputy President Jomo Moremoholo.
