Gogo (82) cheats death

Gogo Nozi Mogajane escaped death when her house caught fire recently. Inset: The Community of Zone 3 has vowed to help Mo gajane in her time of sorrow. The pen sioner’s house burned down recently.

SEBOKENG. – An 82-year-old pensioner Nozi Mogajane, and her grandchildren cheated death in Zone 3 on Friday when their house was engulfed by flames, apparently as a result of an electrical fault. The family was asleep when the violent fire erupted and destroyed almost everything in the house. The pensioner managed to escape the terror of the fire and her screams for help woke the neighbours. Her grandchildren, who were left behind in the house after she escaped the violent flames were helped and rushed to hospital where they were treated for smoke inhalation. The pensioner was treated for shock and hospitalised. Xoli Nosenga, neighbour and local music producer says they were obligated to help the old woman and

her children since the family lives on the old woman’s pension grant. “We formed a group of community members called Sidibene Sibambene Community Forum to help those in need. We decided to help the old woman, and renovate her house. What has happened to her is terrible,” says Nosenga. The forum promised to seek help for the old woman, since her belongings were all in ashes. Nosenga says there’s nothing left as everything was destroyed by the violent flames. “We thank God for all the neighbours’ help,” Nosenga says adding that since this month is dedicated to former President Nelson Mandela they will do everything in their power to see to it that the old lady’s house is restored. The family welcomes any form of support and help that can be provided.

‘‘Reading Reading ffor or R edemption’ iinmates nmates Redemption’ cchange hange ttheir heir llives ives Mduduzi Mathebula

SEDIBENG. - Ex-inmates expressed their thoughts on Thursday at the Groenpunt Maximum Correctional Centre Hall during the ‘Reading for Redemption’ event that was hosted by Groenpunt Correctional Services. Upon opening, area commissioner Mandla Mkhwanazi said there are two kinds of people in prison: those who accept their crime and deal with the consequences and those who are just angry at life without looking for a solution to their problems. Reading for Redemption was introduced to Correctional Services about two to three years ago. Some inmates made use of the programme and soon showed signs of personal growth. The event was well organised, having numerous stakeholders speak to youth offenders who are serving long sentences. Under the theme ‘Youth moving South Africa forward’, guest speaker Billy Selekane, award-

winning public speaker and motivational guru, spoke about making a difference to your situation. He also referred to ‘two kinds of people in the world’ - those who make things happen and those who wait for things happen. Selekane emphasised that, to make it in life you should be willing to face change. Lunga Mthetho, an ex-offender, told the inmates that he decided to change so he could be a better person when he came out. Ex-offender and ever-controversial speaker Baba Kubheka (Soul Provider) says prisonlife is tough and it will be much tougher if an inmate comes out of prison without a plan to make a living.

Police crack down on criminals

Lazarus Dithagiso

VANDERBIJLPARK. -Vanderbijlpark Police Station Commander Brigadier Sam Manala handed over certificates of appreciation to five of his members at his office recently. His main was on members working in the area of Becquerel Street commonly known as ‘Little Hilbrow’. “This is the area that gives me sleepless nights and need serious attention,” he said. The recent success and convictions made are a clear indication that the police are serious about combating crime. Two house-breaking suspects, Teboho France Komane (26) and Mjeremane John Dlamini (25), were arrested by Detective Warrant Officer Gerhard Vosloo. They were sentenced to 10 years for stealing jewellery and electrical equipment last year. Vanderbijlpark Police Tracing Team arrested a 25-year-old Nigerian male suspect in possession of drugs that included crystal

meth, rocks, ‘kat’, dagga, cell phones and cash to the value of R20 000 on June 28. Warrant Officer Kinnie Steyn said that in June alone about 1319 suspects were arrested for various crimes. Manala said the certificates should bolster the member’s morale and bring confidence to the public. He appreciated the manner inwhich his members crack down on criminals. “I am committed to resolving the issues around crime as per my mandate,” he says. On the issue of delayed cases at the Magistrates Court, Brigadier Manala appeals to the community to be patient. “Police will make sure perpetrators of crime receive what they deserve,” he concludes adding that he wishes to see more and more female SAPS members receiving certificates for the jobs well done. Should members of the public feel uncertain about investigations, they are welcome to contact Brig Manala on 082 411 5316.

9R_Na\ @R_R_\ The ‘open season’ has begun, I shall forever wonder why is it that when our peole are not provided with ‘services’ they resort to violence. The past few weeks have seen the community members blocking roads when there is an electricy problem. I know that free speech is for everyone.

A nation of hooligans Young or old; anarchist or evangelical, these rights apply to you. It doesn’t matter whether you’re an SA citizen, whether you’re of voting age, or whether you speak English you have the right. Free-speech rights are for everybody. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise but it is wrong to over-exercise this right with the hope that everything will be rapidly resolved. Tell me, if you block the road because your electricity is off, who is going to fix it

while you are violent and have closed roads with burning tyres and rubbish? It’s not what you say—it’s the way that you say it. Your right to express your opinion is protected no matter what beliefs you hold. What matters is how you use that right. If you organise a protest that causes serious disruption, the government may not be able to intervene. Protesters often cite the lack of accountability of government officials, along with the absence

of public participation as factors that further aggravate their service delivery complaints. The elections held this year likely contribute to the frequency of community protests by providing residents no options for expressing their grievances. I mentioned recently that something needs to be done as we can not allow ourselves to become a nation of hooligans. Lerato....

Government commits to deliver top quality childcare services

MEYERTON.- The Midvaal Local Municipality Social Services Department hosted an Early Childhood Development (ECD) summit in the Meyerton Town Hall recently. The aim of the facilitating dialogue was between the municipality, government agencies, the business sector and the community, in an effort to improve access to services for children. The workshop was recognised through the Social Services Department’s engagements with the practitioners, where they raised the fact that they require more information about compliance and registration processes. ECD programmes have become one of the most significant thrusts driven by the South African government in an attempt to nurture young children and provide them with much needed stimulation in preparation for entering grade 1. Through the combined efforts of Provincial and Local Government, the Hollard Foundation and other stakeholders. There are currently 33 ECD centres in Midvaal, as well as 69 “Day Mothers” who do not have formal

crèche facilities, but look after children in their homes. The summit was attended by ECD practitioners from the centres, as well as the Day Mothers. The programme included words of support from Midvaal politicians, and discussions around nutrition, health, statutory services and business enterprise amongst other topics. The Midvaal’s Social Service Department felt that there was very good participation from the attendees and many questions were asked about compliance matters and child wellbeing, as well as child safety, nutrition and psychosocial well being of children. Questions were directed to the Gauteng Department of Social Development concerning the registration process and financial reporting systems. The Municipality, and the provincial departments attending, committed themselves to continue delivering top quality childcare services to their communities and to make sure that the by- laws in the area are conducive to opening even more ECD centres.

The facilitating dialogue was between the municipality, government agencies, the busi ness sector and the community in an effort to improve access to services for children in the area.

SEBOKENG. The Sedibeng Ster team visited the Lebohang Centre for children living with disabilities in Zone 10 Extension 1 last Friday. In an effort to connect with the community the team decided to visit the centre to see firsthand what their needs are. The centre caters for children with disabilities who are brought in, either by their families, Police, the Department of Health and the Social Development Department. The team found that there are indeed challenges faced by the centre and much more needs to be done, particularly when it comes to insulation on the centre, provision of stimulations programmes, helping with starting

a garden etc. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster the Centre’s Mr Mollo says, “We are in need of many things here and we urge business people and the community at large to come on board and help us out. Sedibeng Ster’s News Editor Lerato Serero says, “More and more people need to be involved in such projects. One would not have known about their struggles if we did not take the initiative to come in and see for ourselves as a community newspaper where we can help out.” The team brought with them fruits and snacks, promising to come back in the future, much to the delight of the young ones. EVATON.- Y-Curve Youth Club a group of young people from different backgrounds who are passionate about uplifting and giving back to the community, recently visited a children’s home in Palm Springs. The group based in Palm Springs realised that there were not many initiatives concerning development in the area. The main reason why they established the group is to help the community while trying to keep them off the streets, by creating community development initiatives, such as the soccer tournament which took place in April, and the Winter Drive that was recently held. They donated clothes

and blankets to the Khwiti-Yethu Children’s Home and helped with cleaning and preparing meals for them. “We planned a fun day packed with activities as we brought the kids a jumping castle to play on and also played games with them. It was a fulfilling act for all the Y-Curve Youth Club members,” says Zandile Ndongeni. The Children’s Home is based in Section D and is run by Grace Mahoma, who says, “My love for children led me to open the home for disadvantaged children in 2002 and started with only one child. Sasol has been involved with the development of football for over 20 years; firstly with the National U/23 Football Team “Amaglug-glug”, and more recently with women’s football in Sasol Banyana Banyana and the women’s provincial football league, the Sasol League. The programme further cements Sasol’s commitment to the development of football in the country.

The 2014 Sasol Noordvaal Bondedag was held at the DP de Villiers Stadium in Sasolburg on Saturday, 28 June 2014. Ten of the 20 teams that are participating in the 2014 Craven week for high schools during July, were in action on the day. “Sasol is proud to sponsor the Bondedag as the sponsorship is in line with Sasol’s key priority to further sport aimed at local talent development,” says Sasol Senior Vice President, Sasolburg Operations, Louis Fourie. Programmes and sponsorships like these utilise the infrastructure that is upgraded and the sustainability enhanced through Sasol’s Ikusasa development projects in partnership with the Metsimaholo Local Municpality.

Hear SA’s finest on Blues Breakers made famous by the band Free. The next track, Parchman Farm, is delivered by the blues legend, Albert Frost. This great album also features vocal sensation Gerald Clark, singing a soulful rendition of the Ray Charles song, Hallelujah. “The Ballistics”, previously known as Ballistic Blues, weigh in with a popular Stevie Ray Vaughan track, Mary had a little lamb. Ann Jangle delivers a spine thrilling performance of the Tom Waits song Jesus Gonna Be Here. 29 Ways, penned by Willie Dixon, played and sung by Wouter van de Venter is a highlight on the album. South African blues icons, The Blues Broers, pay justice to the popular classic, When My Baby Left Me.

SEDIBENG.- The SA Blues Breakers compilation album is one of the most comprehensive recordings of SA blues bands to date. It is a prestige project, showcasing the skills and expertise of some of SA’s finest blues players, all conveniently united on one album. The album offers a variety of blues and blues-rock hits. The listener is first introduced to the album by the strong vocals and classy guitar riffs of Natasha Meister through the iconic Robert Johnson song, “Cross Road Blues.” Picking up on the opening track, the Black Cat Bones blast through the furnace with their rendition of The Hunter, an Albert King song

Crimson House Blues passionately performs the feisty song Mojo Working. The legendary Piet Botha delivers a melancholic version of Cars Hiss By My Window a song by The Doors. Nick Forbes, a talented young musician blasts into the microphone with Kansas City. The polished voice of accomplished singer, Jesse Jordan, strokes the ear with Gimme one Reason, a composition by Tracy Chapman. Kevin Floyd expertly brings the Led Zeppelin penned, Since I’ve been loving you. The widely popular Boulevard Blues Band brought the Eric Clapton song Someday After a While superbly sung by Doctor John Mostert. Well known blues/rock trio Akkedis

slips the atmospheric, The Thrill is Gone into the mix. Rough ‘n tumble rockers, De Wallen, ends this listening experience with the wellknown Stevie Ray Vaughan song Pride and Joy. SA Blues Breakers is published by record label VH Music & Publishing and the album is distributed by Next Music and available nationwide and on iTunes. * One lucky reader will win this album in an easy competition. SMS the word BLUES, followed by the name of any song on the album and your own name and surname to 45516. SMS’s cost R1-50 and should reach us not later than Saturday at 12:00.

Young women sweat it out Sofia Mathole

SEBOKENG. - Vaal Milano FC, a girls team from Sharpeville took part in a friendly head to head tournament with Young Girls FC, a team from Sebokeng on Friday at the Zone 7 Stadium. Montsheng Kola who is a former player in Bophe-

long Ladies and VUT teams formed this team in order to keep young girls off the streets. With the high rate of alcohol and drug abuse in townships, young girls need to be mentored and encouraged to follow a healthy lifestyle to ensure a brighter future. Kola realised that there were but a few girls in her community who were

participating in sports and she decided that she needed to do something about it. Kola said, “My goal for this team at the moment is to enter them into the Sasol Provincial League and to show these girls that they can amount to more than they ever thought they were capable of.”

RUST-TER-VAAL. - The Simon “Bull” Lehoko Sports Foundation is to host a soccer tournament in honour of the late Neil Jansen. The event is scheduled to take place at the Rust-ter-Vaal Sports Complex in September. This good news was broken to Sedibeng Ster Sports by the foundation’s marketing and communication manager, Mojekisale Lehoko. Jansen died a tragic death in the field of play while playing in a game with other local legends like Moses Moloi and Geelbooi “Goma” Masango, to mention but a few. His funeral was attended by a veritable ‘who’s who’ in football and politics. The Rust-ter-Vaal Sports Complex will be named after Jansen for the role he played in the Rustter-Vaal community. Lehoko says they will not only honour Jansen, but other former Vaal professional players such as Geelboi Masango, Robinson “Koi Yoko” Seakamela, the late Meshack “Guna” Zwane, Ronny Joa and many others as well. He says that - as the foundation - they saw fit to acknowledge those former soccer professionals for the role they played in the development of football in this country. He says they will invite other soccer legends from as far afield as Johannesburg, Springs, Tembisa, Free State and other provinces, to come and celebrate this day with them. “These are the people who used to bring joy to many people’s lives while playing soccer at the highest level. We invite companies to come on board to make this day a success,” he concludes.

Local boxers to exchange blows Zacharia Nale

Sparks will fly when these youngsters exchange blows in the much anticipated Sedibeng Amateur Boxing Tournament to take place at Saul Tsotetsi Sports Center in Zone 14, Sebokeng this Saturday. Photo: Zacharia Nale.

SEBOKENG.- Local boxers will exchange punches when they compete in the Amateur Boxing Tournament scheduled to take place at Saul Tsotetsi Sports Center in Zone 14, Sebokeng on Saturday. This much anticipated tournament will be hosted by the Sedibeng Amateur Boxing Organisation in conjunction with Emfuleni Local Municipality. The event will see local boxers pitted against their counterparts from Soweto, Alexandra, Thembisa and other regions. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sports, the newly elected Sedibeng Amateur Boxing Organisation chairman Morena Tsotetsi says the tournament is the ongoing attempt to bring boxing back to the townships. He believes that this kind of tournament will help to revive the sport in this region. Some of the notable names that used to mesmerise local boxing fans include Carlton “Swing Carlie” Monnakagotla, Shamba Mthimkulu, “Tiger Follor” Shole Mokoena, Baby Lux Khambule, Aaron “AK 47” Kabi

and a host of others. “We will never give up until boxing gets a place of honour on our sports calendar and I’m positive that we will achieve our objective. This is one sport that used to bring Vaal people together in the past. I’m happy because for the past three months the response has been so positive and local boxing clubs are now active in their respective areas,” says Tsotetsi who was accompanied by the Emfuleni Sports Organiser Thanduxolo Madikizela. The two urges Sedibeng Zone 14 and surrounding communities to come in big numbers to support this initiative. Apart from development, Madikizela says the tournament also forms part of the Mandela Day celebration. The legendary Nelson Mandela was a boxer and was passionate about boxing.“As Emfuleni we would like to dedicate this tournament to our fallen hero Utata Madiba for his contribution in sports. The man deserves to be acknowledged for his selfless contribution in this country,” he concludes.

Developing football talent in Fezile Dabi District SASOLBURG. - Sasol, in partnership with the South African Football Association SAFA, officially launched a football talent development programme in the Fezile Dabi District at the Harry Gwala Sport Centre on Wednesday, June 25. This is the second leg of the partnership that impacts the local football associations of Fezile Dabi in the Free State and Gert Sibande in Mpumalanga. The first leg was launched on March 26 in Secunda. Sasol’s long standing support for South African football development in the country has inspired the company to become the first corporate sponsor of the South African Football

Association Development Agency (SDA). The main objective of SAFA’s vision 2022 Football Development Plan is to have all SAFA national teams ranked consistently in the top three in Africa and top twenty in the world. The plan has seven pillars to it. These include the development of a national playing philosophy, the training and licensing of coaches, the identification and nurturing of talent from the earliest age, as well as organisation of structured competition at a local football association level. “Sasol is excited about this initiative as it is an excellent example of our commitment to the communities in which we operate, in collaboration with other part-

ners such as SAFA-DA. Our approach to sustainable development, as the success of Sasol’s Ikusasa community and infrastructure development programme demonstrates, depends on building strong and mutually beneficial relationships. We are therefore proud to be working with the South African Football Association to contribute to the development of football in our region,” said Vusi Cwane, Vice President, Sasol Public and Regulatory Affairs, Sasolburg. The Sasol-SAFA Football Development Programme entails SAFA B and C licence certification of coaches, grassroots coaching and education programmes, training of coaches/ life-skills educators and referee de-

velopment. Provision is also made for staffing and operational costs, while growth and development of women’s football in the community will also be addressed. Sasol has been involved with the development of football for over 20 years; firstly with the National U/23 Football Team “Amaglug-glug”, and more recently with women’s football in Sasol - Banyana Banyana and the women’s provincial football league, the Sasol League. The Sasol-SAFA Football Development Programme further cements Sasol’s commitment to the development of football in the country.

Sedibeng football is like a bus without wheels The failure of Vaal Milano FC to gain promotion to the Motsepe League is a clear indication of the poor standard of football in this region, in particular the Safa Sedibeng SAB League. Expectations were very high before the play-offs with many convinced that Vaal Milano will be pro-

moted to the Motsepe League. They made history to finish the league without being defeated in a single game, which is a record that PSL Clubs can only wish to achieve. However, their performance was misleading based on their low scores during the play-offs which came to an end over the weekend. Shooting From The Hip does not blame Vaal Milano. I blame the teams that they competed against in the SAB League in this region. Clearly Vaal Milano competed against themselves the entire season. How can one explain a team finishing a season without defeat? Where were the other teams? Now it makes sense that Vaal Milano failed to gain promotion to Motsepe League

because here at home they played against weak opponents. Shooting From The Hip knows many people will say that there is a lot of corruption when it comes to play-offs as far as bribery is concerned, but this is not an excuse. The only thing that is needed in this region is serious introspection. Yes, we can blame Vaal Milano FC for failing Sedibeng, but we are also to be blamed for the mediocrity the SAB League teams display in the field of play. Never in the world can a team win a league without a defeat! As much as Vaal Milano was strong, one way or the other they must be defeated. They went, saw, but failed to conquer. For the past five years this region has failed to produce even a second division team?

Then Shooting From The Hip has all the right to say our region’s football is stuck, big time. Football in this region is like a bus without wheels. Our football is in a serious crisis with the news that the teams want to write a letter to the Safa Sedibeng Regional Executive Committee stating their vote of no confidence. Shooting From The Hip has learned that some teams’ officials gathered over the weekend to discuss this issue. The truth is that there is no leadership in this region as far as football is concerned. The only people we have in this region are power mongers. Yes, I just said it!

SEDIBENG.- Once again Sedibeng will not be represented in the Motsepe League next season after Vaal Milano FC failed to gain promotion. This Sharpeville-based side represented Sedibeng at the Promotion Play-Offs that took place at the Nike Training Centre in Soweto over the weekend. Milano represented Sedibeng in the play-offs after they were crowned the Safa Sedibeng SAB League Champions at the end of the

2013/2014 season. Club director Junior Gusha was not happy with the way things turned out during the play-offs. Gusha says the treatment they received from the organisers was hostile. He says the fixtures were changed without notification. On Saturday, Gusha says they were supposed to play against Kaizer Chiefs at 10:00, but when they arrived at the venue they were told that the game kickoffs is at 12:00. “The truth is that we did not lose this game in the field of play, but off the field. Safa told

us that they sent the changed fixtures to Safa Sedibeng but the region never made us aware of change of fixtures. We looked like fools when we got there with Chiefs’ officials showing us the new fixtures. It was really hard to motivate these boys after spending two hours waiting for Chiefs because we arrived there early thinking that we will be playing at 10:00. I’m not bitter, but I feel Safa Sedibeng let us down for not informing us about fixture changes,” says Gusha. However, Gusha says his team

Nale winter schools soccer challenge

Abia Nale aims to plough back into his community with the tournament.

SEBOKENG.- Abia Nale Foundation in conjunction with Women 4 Women will host an U/12 tournament which will feature four primary schools. The tournament is scheduled to take place at Isak Steyl Stadium on July 27. This mouth-watering news was delivered to Sedibeng Ster Sport by Abia Nale, who is behind the initiative. Nale says the tournament is in memory of his late father Elia Nale, and will be known as the Elia Nale Winter Tournament. Nale (Abia) says the tournament is a great opportunity for young players around the Vaal especially primary schools to showcase their talent. He says that for the tournament they will select the best talent made up of 18 players that will represent Vaal against top development teams around Gauteng. Nale says they will involve other

stake holders such as Safa Sedibeng, Municipality, Department of Sports and Recreation and other stakeholders to make this project a success. “We will use this tournament as a platform to help underprivileged youth, especially girls and boys between the ages of five and seventeen to gain confidence. This tournament it is not only about playing soccer but we take pride in these youngsters’ education,” says Abia. Nale started his soccer career in the dusty streets of Sebokeng, playing for local amateur team, Burning Spears FC before he joined the Orlando Pirates development team at the age of 13. He made a name for himself while playing for the now relegated Golden Arrows FC. Nale is currently at Black Aces on loan from Kaizer Chiefs.

will bounce back and this time around they will come more prepared. He says his team has learned a lot from these games. Meanwhile, as the situation stands at the moment, three teams must be relegated to the lower division. The teams that were automatically relegated are Manyora and United Scientists FC after finishing position 15 and 16 respectively on the log. Sedibeng Ster Sports has learned that Sebokeng Ajax FC might be relegated since Vaal Milano FC failed to gain promotion.
