Manhole ‘swallows’ boy Lazarus Dithagiso
POLOKONG. - Sedibeng District Municipality (SDM) Mayor Councillor Simon ‘Sy’ Mofokeng pleads with the community to let the family and relatives of sixyear-old Sibusiso Ndaba find closure. Sibusiso was in the company of his grandmother when he fell into a slightly open manhole near the Golden Highway. The incident happened last Thursday at around 11:00. Speaking during his visit to the family of the deceased, Mofokeng said it was very unfortunate that this involved a government manhole, “It’s an accident that could have happened to anyone at any time.”Mofokeng was accompanied by Ward councillor Attie Moleko, Sedibeng MMC for Strategic Planning and Economic Development Maipato Tsokolibane and Health and Social Development MMC Melina Gomba. It took Fire and Rescue hours to locate the boy. After talking to the family, Mofokeng appealed to the community not to politicise the incident. He said Emfuleni and Sedibeng municipalities will help with the burial costs. Kingsol Chabalala, DA constituency Emfuleni, said EMS had ignored a plea for help from the community to rescue the victim. It has been alleged that the boy was walking behind his grandmother after they jumped the road towards Polokong. A vendor told Sedibeng Ster that after the boy fell into the manhole, there was a rush to rescue him, but it was too little too late. “No-one could get inside the dangerous manhole. It was awful listening to the voice of the boy, calling his mother for help. Only a few seconds later, the voice was gone.” Community members said they had informed Metsi-a-Lekoa workers
Members of the Police, Water Wing and Emfuleni Fire and Rescue were apparently out of ideas near the manhole that swallowed sixyearold Sibusiso Ndaba. Insert: The late Sibusiso Ndaba (6) died after he fell into a manhole near the Golden Highway, Polokong last week. Photo: Lazarus Dithagiso.
about the danger of the open manhole. Later in the evening, the community went berserk. They relieved their frustration by barricading the road with tyres. Police were called to control the volatile situation. The community blamed Fire and Rescue, the Waterwing and Police for failing to search for the body. The body was found the following day trapped at the Sebokeng Water Care Works.
The body was found by contractors who came to assist the following day. The stealing of manhole covers by the community should not be dismissed. Sebokeng Water Care Works has high pressure with over 120 mega litres per day. It is one of the biggest plants in Gauteng. The sewerage runs on gravity with big pipes that accommodate the whole network. A funeral will be conducted
from the deceased’s home on Saturday in Polokong. *The stealing of manhole covers to sell for money played a major role in this tragic death. The municipality is now using asbestos instead of metal to try and stop this. But now residents fear there is a chance that the asbestos will also be stolen to use as heaters.

Prayer vs Crime by Flying Squad
Mduduzi Mathebula
VEREENIGING. - The Vereeniging Banquet Hall was packed with men and women in blue on Thursday morning when the Vaal Rand Flying Squad held a prayer day that hosted the likes of Evangelist Ananias Ralekholela, Bishop Isaac Mthimkhulu and Pastor Piet “London” Nteleki. The prayer day was embraced by many from the defence force, Fire, and Vaal Rand Police. Nteleki asked the house to embrace itself for the good job they are doing, knowing that they are the first defence in the country. “We need to trust God with our jobs because he has given it to us. No matter how hard it is, no matter how
stressful and tempting your work, you are not fighting the criminals in flesh. It’s a spiritual matter, take it to the office,” says Nteleki. Meanwhile former Sebokeng Police station Commander Michael Motlhala was also given an opportunity to speak to former colleagues. He told the house that he has been through thick and thin and God was with him. “I am where I am through God who took me from glory to glory,” says Motlhala. Ralekholela spoke like a father to children, quoting numerous verses from the Bible. “The devil is a liar. You are where you are because God wanted you to be here. God says he will never leave us nor forsake us,” Ralekholela concluded.

BOPHELONG. - An alarming increase in the number of trucks hijacked while transporting cigarettes in the area is reported. Now Police aim to send hijackers packing by beefing up security. All trucks are escorted from shop to shop by the South African Police Service. Police spokesperson Sergeant Gertrude Makhale said it’s a station instruction that all cigarette transit vehicles be escorted. Police have received complaints about increased hijackings but some people feel this is a false alarm. Vereeniging Police reported recently that a truck was hijacked. It was reported that the truck carried Chicago cigarettes. It was later recovered in Meyerton. Makhale said the escorts will go on until
the private companies hire their own private security guards. She reacted after a photo was brought to the attention of Sedibeng Ster. The community is worried that no police vehicles will be available when a serious incident takes place in the township and say that private companies have money to beef up their own security. One Sedibeng Ster reader said that, since last year, they have spotted the same police mini-bus escorting a vehicle transporting cigarettes. This has raised serious concerns that the same vehicle is always escorted by Warrant Officer Rakimane, sector manager in Bophelong. Makhale said there was nothing wrong with this as Rakimane has been tasked to escort the transit.

SEBOKENG. - Two suspects, both charged with murder, appeared in separate chambers of the Sebokeng Magistrates Court. A 27-year-old woman allegedly stabbed her boyfriend to death with a knife. Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Mzimkulu Mthimkulu said the boyfriend, Thabo Mpho Abram Motloung (27) of Zone 13, arrived home in the late hours of November 9 at about 22:30. An argument ensued and the girlfriend produced a knife, forcing the victim to run for cover. He hid under a table and then behind wardrobes, pleading for his life. Police said she stabbed him in the upper body
and left him bleeding severely. The victim was rushed to Sebokeng Hospital and was declared dead on arrival. In another case, a man was stabbed to death by his friend while drinking at a tavern on November 9 at about 02:45. A 23-year-old suspect briefly appeared in the Sebokeng Magistrates Court. Mthimkulu confirmed that the suspect and victim were at the tavern. They had an argument before the suspect produced a knife, stabbing him in the upper body. The man died on the scene. The suspects were returned to custody for legal aid bail application and they return to court on November 20.

EVATON. - After the brutal rape and murder of nine-year-old Bonang Selai the search for the suspect by the police is still on. Bonang was laid to rest on Saturday. Her death came as a shock to many residents when she was found on a dumping site, naked with both hands and legs tied up. She is suspected to have been suffocated to death. It was a very emotional and delicate sendoff and most mourners made the point to support the family in their time of grief. The deceased’s mother Portia Selai who was treated for trauma prior to the discovery of her daughter broke down during the funeral service. Bonang was later buried on a raining day at the Vanderbijlpark Cemetery.

A tenant evicts landlord through sheriff Lazarus Dithagiso
POLOKONG. - An attempt by a tenant to evict her landlord turned ugly when a group of community members attacked the tenant with weapons. It was alleged that the person wanted to evict Aleta Tumane. The community could not understand how a former tenant is in possession of the title deed as most residents living in new RDP houses do not have the title deeds. This title deed is in the name of former tenant Joyce Malefu Mofokeng. It is alleged that she bought the house
fraudulently from a person known as Selina who has since passed away, through assistance of the Legal Aid Department in Vereeniging. The late Selina is said to have to worked as a ward committee member during the time of former ANC ward Councillor Captain Ntlele. During the eviction Police arrived, but angry community members threatened to take action if Mofokeng ever decided to come back to the house. Both the police and sheriff managed to break the lock of the door and remove items from the house. The angry community, ward committee
Sanco concerned about expulsion of Numsa Lazarus Dithagiso
SEDIBENG. - The Sedibeng regional branch of the South African National Civic Organisation (SANCO) has expressed grave concerns about the regrettable expulsion of the National Union of Metalworkers Union of South Africa (Numsa) by the Congress of South African Trade Union, COSATU. Sanco appeals to COSATU to explore every possible alternative to ensure that the unity and strength of COSATU is not compromised. The regional executive committee led by Motsamai Maphalla said the struggle for economic emancipation by the people can only be realised
through building maximum unity among the poor. Maphalla said, “Just as Sanco respects the autonomy of COSATU, we wish to jealously guard against any interference with the internal processes of the federation and adherence to its constitution and policies. “We recognise the negative consequences of a divided COSATU in a region whose economy is heavily reliant on the steel industry. We recognise the implications of a NUMSA outside of the alliance.” Maphalla said the region and the ANC express their disappointment in COSATU’s decision.

and Ward Councillor Attie Moleko, returned all items removed and put them back into the house. Moleko advised the family to appeal to the Sebokeng Magistrates Court for help. He said he is surprised at how the titles to the new houses had been issued. “I suspect it might be a deed search, not a search for a title deed,” he said. The ex-boyfriend of Mofokeng confirmed that there has been corruption in the whole saga. “We were never in possession of the title deeds. We’ve been renting from Tumane,” he says.
Elisa Tumane, motherinlaw, guards the possessions of Alleta Tumane after be ing evicted by the sheriff in Polokong while at work. The house belongs to the late Popo Sebusi (Tumane).
Suffering mother needs help

SEDIBENG. - Three years ago a 23-year-old mother of two never thought her life could turn into a nightmare when her mother left her to find employment in Cape Town. Mbali Msomi is living in a shack that she does not own, with two children, a two-year-old and a fourmonths-old without an ID or any sort of income. She’s living in shack that does not have electricity or running water and she is forced to cook outside even if it is raining. The struggling mother was spotted by the Lawrence Khekhe Foundation in Boiketlong recently. Like most of Boiketlong’s residents Msomi’s situation is heart-breaking and unbearable. The young woman has been left with the fatherless children and no one to turn to. “I’m from KZN, my mother and I were moving from place to place. I thought she was going to come back for me but it has been very long since she left. All I need is help from the community to find out if she is still alive. I’m sick and these children will need her if something happens to me,” says the struggling Msomi. Lawrence Khekhe is appealing to the community members to assist Msomi. “I’m very touched by her story. I have been running the Christmas Donation Campaign for years but I have never seen such a situation in my life,” says Khekhe from Lawrence Khekhe foundation.

Reticulation system improving: ELM Lerato Serero
SEDIBENG. - Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM) spokesperson Klaas Mofomme says that the waste water of the Emfuleni Local Municipality is treated to acceptable standards. In a correspondence with Sedibeng Ster Mofomme says that they have noted with regret factually incorrect allegations that the Emfuleni Sewer Reticulation System is one of the pollution threats to the river system through E-coli and other pathogens from raw or poorly treated sewage. “The Emfuleni Local Municipality has noted that while the municipality acknowledges that our ageing infrastructure poses a challenge to us in
relation to our reticulation system, it is not true that pipe bursts are not noticed or attended to. “Our maintenance team ensures that there are regular checks on the system to avoid situations where a large amount of sewage finds its way to the Vaal River,” Mofomme says, adding that it must be put on record that all their Waste Water Care Works, Leeuwkuil, Rietspruit and Sebokeng, operate 24 hours throughout the year as part of their commitment to ensure that the waste water is treated to acceptable standards. “We also want to emphasise that there are maintenance teams on
standby for each Waste Water Care Works (WWCW) which operate in three shift systems. The municipality acknowledges that it is faced with some challenges in relation to waste water treatment, especially due to new property development in our area. However, we have plans in place to address these challenges,” he says. Sebokeng WWCW is currently in the process of being upgraded by two additional modules of 50 megalitres per day each. This project is funded by the department of Water and Sanitation and Rand Water is the implementing agent. Construction started in 2013 and completion is expected in2016.

SEBOKENG. - Career developing practitioners Palesa Nakedi and Thokozile Masolo say it is very important for learners to choose their subjects wisely while still in the early grades. The importance of this emerged over the weekend when the two, with the help of a few educators, held a career day for Grade 9 learners at the Thuto Tiro Comprehensive School in Zone 10. Masolo says, “We were deployed to this school by the Gauteng Region City Academy (GRCA) as career developing practitioners. Basically what we are here to do is help learners with regards to subject-choices and help them choose career paths that are in line with their passions and strong points.” Masolo adds that it gets difficult when they do not get enough support from educators and
parents. “We were very disappointed to notice that some of the parents did not encourage their kids to attend the career day. We were expecting over 200 Grade 9 learners but only about 50 turned up at the event.” Learners were asked to dress up for the different careers they will one day venture into and professionals from different fields were invited to give more insight into their jobs and what it is they do on a daily basis. “Today was entirely about subject choice. Grade 9 is a very crucial level and this is where learners make the choices that will determine their futures,” says Nakedi. Both said they hoped that the students walked away knowing what it is they want in life. “I hope they are motivated to reach for their dreams and grab their futures with both hands,” Nakedi concluded.

At the meeting important matters were discussed in line with the school’s operation next year. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster, Principal Lindiwe Bosiu says that it is always important to inform stakeholders, including parents, about what is going on at the school. Amongst the matters also discussed were financial reports, school uniforms, feeding schemes, learner discipline, parental involvement in their child’s education and the curriculum at large. Parents were also given materials to help their children with substance abuse, teenage pregnancy, bullying and gangsterism. “We are pleased that things went well for us this year and believe that through working together with pupils, teachers and parents, 2015 will also be a successful year,” says a delighted Bosui.

We are the living testimony to that. Parents should not worry about how their children will survive. There are people out there who are willing to open their hearts to help,” Molefe said. Pheaha Malapeng, Principal of Mqiniswa, said the school is happy about the donations made. SEBOKENG. - Sibusiso Mthembu’s way of giving back to the community is one that can put a smile on anyone’s face. Mthembu coowns the Star Revolution Academy of Dance with Mega Matloha. The academy teaches about 60 youngsters from Sebokeng different types of dance for free. Mthembu says, “I really have a passion for dance and I feel it is something that can bring a lot of positivity into the community. What I am trying to do is move kids away from negative things such as drugs and teenage pregnancy. Dance keeps them busy.” Mthembu recently organised an event for local business owners to showcase their products and to come together to create a platform of unity amongst local entrepreneurs and the community. “The idea is to form a
partnership with local businesses so that the young kids can benefit from this. If I have the community on my side, we can easily get the things we need for the academy without having to pay for them, as that would be expensive,” adds Mthembu. While restaurant owner Noka Motana cooked up a storm to bring people the best of her combinations, fashion designer Teboho Moloi showcased his talent through his latest wedding collection. Motana says, “I think it is very good for us to have relations with other entrepreneurs. We can learn a lot if we continue to build a network of local business owners so as to share important information and advice on how one can grow and sustain a business. It is also important for us to contribute to community upliftment.” Motana concludes.

Fun day for children with disabilities ORANGE FARM. - Afrika Tikkun’s Empowerment Programme for children with disabilities recently addressed barriers to accessing justice for children with disabilities in Orange Farm. This was when Afrika Tikkun’s Arekopaneng Community Centre in Orange Farm hosted the Kopano Kematla Sports day for all. Jean Elphick who heads the programme says, “The event, which is organised largely by mothers of children with disabilities, is a fun and inclusive sports day for children within the community.” “The idea is aimed at promoting equality and breaking down prejudices. More than half the children with disabilities in Orange Farm stay at home instead of attending a pre-school or
school. They never get the opportunity to play sports, let alone compete on an even footing with their non-disabled peers. The mothers saw this day as an opportunity for their kids to participate in something fun and exciting,” Elphick adds. Elphick states that the greatest achievement of this event lies in the impact it had on the able-bodied children who attended. “They interacted and competed against children with disabilities, smashing mindsets and growing friendships,” Elphick concludes. Events included wheelchair races and sitting volleyball games. Afrika Tikkun’s Arekopaneng Communi ty Centre in Orange Farm recently hos ted the Kopano Kematla Sports Day for all.

Crime unit will lessen crime
Moleboheng Chaha
VEREENIGING. - The primary goal of the Crime Prevention Unit is to help educate citizens on how to reduce their risk of becomin victims of crime. The New Vereeniging SAPS Crime Prevention Unit will be seen in a new and highly visible uniform during the festive season. This was revealed when the director of the ‘Crusader Arms and Ammunitions and Yo-
ung Guns’ Fish Mafale, donated the uniform as part of his Community Service Initiative (CSI). Warrant officer Jabulane Sibeko states that this forms part of a visibility campaign. “It is the festive season and what we want is for people to know that we are here. “The crime prevention unit will during the holidays work extra hard to lower the crime rate and ensure that our people are safe on the streets.” Sibeko adds that the unit is something
that is considered as a permanent initiative. As it is new to the Vereeniging SAPS, Sibeko adds that the people who are going to form part of the unit will get chosen from within the police force. Mafale states that this gesture for him forms part of giving back to the community. “This gesture is just a way to show my appreciation and my support for the work the police do,” Mafale concludes.
VEREENIGING. - The Matt’s Foundation Christmas has commenced. The purpose of the initiative is to collect gifts and presents for destitute members of the Vaal community, children in particular. Matt’s Foundation relies on the support of the community to help bring holiday cheer to orphans and disadvantaged children in Vaal through its Christmas Gift Drive. “Our Christmas Drive has been running for the past 5 years and every year with the help of Vaal residents we are able to surprise underprivileged children with a little Christmas cheer,” says the Matt’s Foundation Board. The Matt’s Foundation Christmas Drive is a way to celebrate the true meaning of the festive season. As we celebrate the love that surrounds us, let’s spare a thought for those who are less fortunate. Community members can get involved by donating toys, presents, stationery, food, clothing as well as volunteering their time in aid of the Christmas Drive. Matt’s Foundation aims to collect enough presents for the kids as well as stationery items to help with the children’s school needs for 2015. Please contact Matt’s Foundation on (016) 420 2000 or helpus@mattsfoundation.co.za to find out more about how you can support the Christmas Drive.

Greater Vaal Scholar Transport gives back to education Mduduzi Mathebula
VEREENGING. - Greater Vaal Scholar Transport celebrated 30 top learners from Selborne Primary School by taking them on an outing to Spur on Monday. The initiative was done by the transport company and a group of parents to redeem the image of education for primary level. These 30 learners had outdone their peers on the ANA (Annual National Assessment.) The deputy principal says they are thrilled with the achievements by the learners. “Parents had shown their care for education and love for their children. We would like to send our greatest thanks to the scholar transport that organised the event for the children,” says
Pule Tenyane. Greater Vaal Scholar Transport was established in 1999. “We are transporting the future generation that will take this country forward. We are running a business that needs love and care. Challenges are out there but we have to look beyond them and deliver,” says chairperson of the scholar transport Zoleka Khaiyane. Amongst these children, one proud mother Nonthando Mahlasela has two children who are among the top 30 - Mpumelelo and Samkelisiwe. “I’m very happy that they are reaping the fruit of their hard work,” says Mahlasela.

Share the joy of giving this festive season MEYERTON. - With Christmas just around the corner, the Be Different Brand Builders will be co-ordinating a Santa’s Shoebox Drive in the Midvaal area. This year’s theme is ‘Share the joy of giving.’ Gift boxes are filled with some necessities, such as a toothpaste and a toothbrush, a face cloth and soap, as well as some sweets, educational supplies, a toy and an outfit of clothing, individually chosen and filled. “We have
identified needy children from Randvaal, Midvaal and Sebokeng who will benefit from the project that Be Different has been co-ordinating for the last four years,” says owner of Be Different Melody Barber. Spearheaded by Kidz2Kidz founder Dee Boehner in 2006 and coordinated by Irene Pieters since 2007, this inspiring non-profit organisation has been collecting ‘Santa Shoeboxes’ at Christmas time for thousands of children from distinctly vulne-
rable social backgrounds since it started. Since then many individuals and organisations, started a drive in their own communities to bring some joy to the needy over the festive season. The Santa Shoebox Project offers people from all walks of life the chance to participate in a profoundly valuable and personal experience. “Uniquely, donor parents and their children are involved in personally selecting the name of a specific child from the selection list,
and this means each participant knows the first name, age, and gender of the child,” adds Barber. Barber states that it is personal touch that endears the project to adults and children from all communities. Individuals and companies wanting to support children in our community can contact Melody Barber on cell 084 705 1181 or Desiree Rathbone cell 082 821 0774 or email bedifferent@mweb.co.za

Sebokeng Evolution Fun Day Zacharia Nale
SEBOKENG. - The Sebokeng Evolution recently hosted a successful FUN Day for Sebokeng crèches in conjunction with Zone 14 Ward Councillor Bennet Jantjie at the Saul Tsotetsi Sports Complex in Zone 14. The event was part of the organisation’s programme to interact with the Sebokeng community, especially young people. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster, the organisation’s chairman Molefi Motlamelle
hailed the event as a success. The organisation hosted 20 local crèches and there was a hive of activity arranged for children in the form of traditional dances and a fun run, to mention but a few. “We were happy with the response and we wish to take this opportunity to thank the Zone 14 community for their support. It was a fun-filled day for these kids and they really enjoyed themselves. We are looking to host another event for grannies,” he concluded.

Ikusasa investment to improve landfill site management Sasol, through our community development project, Ikusasa, recently made a substantial contribution to effective management of the Sasolburg municipal landfill site.
“During the trial the fence withstood severe conditions such as various attempts of destruction, cutting and fire,” says Botha.
A security fence was erected along the access road to the dump site to curb illegal dumping that has often taken place along this road.
In addition, Sasol contributed a CAT landfill compactor to maintain the waste stockpile and keep the entrance to the dump clear. The CAT 816F2 spreads the waste evenly before it uses its full weight of 23 770 kg to compact waste as it drives over.
This reinforced ClearVu fence is 2,4 m high, has anti-climb castle spikes and ripper smart coils at the top, with an antiburrowing system below the ground. According to the project manager, Elmarie Botha, a trial section was installed and monitored for three months before the whole area was fenced to establish durability against vandalism and theft. Dr Esmé Young, Manager CSR and Community Affairs (Ikusasa) presenting the landfill compactor to Sydney Lempe, Director Social Service, Metsimaholo Local Municipality. To her left are Lappies Labuschagne, acting manager Health and Cleansing and Gerhard Crous, Supervisor Health and Cleansing at the municipality. On the far right stands the project manager, Elmarie Botha.
According to Sydney Lempe, Director Social Service at the Metsimaholo Local Municipality, they are most thankful for these initiatives that will vastly improve the municipality’s capacity to manage the landfill site more effectively.

No-one owns FOOTBALL! One way or the other we must grow as a region - as a region is a macrocosm of the nation. We cannot repeat the same mistakes when it comes to our football leadership. The reason we ended up electing the wrong people to lead our football is that we were too myopic (short-sighted). This was one of my warnings to some development coaches over the weekend to be careful who they elect to run football. How can you select a person who
has never been involved in football to run our football? The success of the PSL is based on the fact that those board members are club owners and make sure the interests of football comes first. But in this region, we take people from shebeens and taverns to run our football. Shooting From The Hip’s advice to the teams is that – when you choose leadership, think hard before bringing in somebody who cares nothing about the development of football to run this beautiful game. There must be order in our football with not everyone simply doing as they wish because this is the biggest challenge in our
football – lack of accountability. For example, Shooting From The Hip is aware that there was a meeting of the Emfuleni Local Football Association on Monday, but some teams were never invited. There is much confusion in this region and even the teams are confused about the league. As Shooting From The Hip said last week, football administrators and development coaches are divided in this region. The follow-up question would be: Why were other teams not invited to the meeting if it was an association meeting? This is no longer about football development, but some people try to hide themselves
behind our beautiful game. They pretend to be concerned about the development of football but the fact of the matter is that they are only interested in glutting their egos. Whatever is happening in this region at the moment has nothing to do with the development of football. It is all about a power-struggle, to say the least. Ladies and gentlemen, please let us refrain from using the word ‘development’ to achieve our personal objectives. Even if some of you leave football, this beautiful game would still be on the go for at least the next century. No one owns this beautiful game!

No talent without proper equipment
Lazarus Dithagiso
BOPHELONG. - A sports development council exists but there’s no equipment. “It’s a disgrace to lose young talent that, of course, ends up leaving the the region for greener pastures,” said Doctor Modise, sports development officer. Speaking during the media briefing at the Bophelong Hub office at the stadium, Modise added that the Emfuleni Local Football Association unearthed the talent of young players but there was no follow-up. He said the municipality sports council knows the predicament they face: “We have since simply brought our hands together to pray that help will come from the Department of Sport to equip us. As a sports council, we have been belittled,” says Modise. Tshidiso Thoahlane, senior sports council officer, humbly appeals to all stakeholders to come on board and assist with any kind of help: “We have quality talent but there are no tools to boost or unearth it,” he says. He said there were not even poles for netball, no space for rugby, athletics, or a cricket pitch. “We need people
with passion to activate and boost sports,” he adds. Asked about having approached the Emfuleni MMC for Sports, Councillor Chaka Radebe, the council said they will schedule an appointment to meet him. There are no sport lights, water taps or toilets. Most facilities have been vandalised. “We cannot blame the security guard. How can one guard the area with no light or weapons? Security guards’ lives are at risk. When the teams play, members must go out to use toilets in the townships.
VEREENIGING. - MCS Sedibeng Cup’s Last Eight Draw was conducted at the TRP Lodge in Vereeniging on Sunday. The draw was added to the launch of this 3rd edition of the tournament. Forming part of the draw was the main sponsor Moso Consultation Services (MCS), who outlined their vision for the tournament. The launch was attended by all the teams who have since qualified for the last eight in all divisions – u/13, u/15 and u/17. The draw for the women’s soccer teams also took place on the same day with 12 teams battling for honour. Speaking at the launch, MCS representative Lehlohonolo Mokhethi said their interest is the development of football, especially in Sedibeng, one of the regions well-known for producing fine talent. He says for the past two years they have been deeply impressed by the kind of talent displayed at the tournament. He says the tournament was also part of the MCS’s social responsibility to make a difference in the lives of those youngsters who dream of playing professional football. “As MCS we were delighted to work with the Se-
dibeng community. They have been good to us for the past two years. There is no doubt that Sedibeng is the best when it comes to talent. If you look at the PSL most players are from this region,” said Mokhethi. Upgrading facilities Zacharia Nale
SEBOKENG. - Emfuleni Local Municipality MMC for Sports Shaka Radebe revealed that the Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM) will upgrade township facilities. Radebe was talking to Sedibeng Ster Sport recently. He says some of the facilities they will upgrade include the Zone 7 and Zone 11 Stadiums. The good news for Sharpeville sports de-
velopment is that the municipality is busy adding another three soccer fields outside the George Thabe Stadium. Construction has already started at the venue. Radebe said the municipality is committed to upgrading sports facilities in this region for the development of sport: “We want to make sure that our facilities are in good condition for these youngsters,” he said.

Pooe Festive Soccer Tournament around the corner EVATON. - It’s that time of the year when local soccer fans will spend their festive season at the dusty soccer field of Beheman Rovers to watch diski nine - the Pooe Festive Soccer Tournament. This much anticipated annual tournament is scheduled to take place in December with junior and senior soccer teams battling it out for honour throughout the festive season. This was revealed to Sedibeng Ster Sports by the Kgokgi Sports Foundation Tournament coordinator - Mondli Nkosi. The tournament is one of its kind to be staged in the Sedibeng region. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sports, Nkosi says this is the only tournament that brings the Sedibeng community together during the festive season. He believes that this year they will attract more participants. He believes that the tournament plays an important role to reduce crime during the festive season and keep young people busy. “We invite all the interested teams to come and participate in the tournament because it is for everyone. Apart from keeping young people off the street, the tournament is part of development to give our youngsters a platform from which to compete against each other,” says Nkosi. The Foundation invites all the teams to attend the Pooe Festive Soccer meeting scheduled to take place at Pooe Bottle Store this Friday, November 21 at 16:00. This was revealed to Sedibeng Diary by the tournament coordinator Mondli Nkosi. Nkosi says the meeting is part of preparations for the tournament set to take place on December 12 for the junior soccer teams with the senior teams’ kick-off on December 15.
