SACP plans for the future The newly elected District Executive Committee (DEC).

Lerato Serero

SEDIBENG.- With over 3000 and growing members across Sedibeng District, the South African Communist Party (SACP) recently re-affirmed their vanguard party role for the working class movement. This they did at their 6th Vaal District Congress held at Maccauvlei Conference Centre near Vereeniging where their District Executive Committee (DEC) was also elected. Central to discussions were issues such as NUMSA workers at Arcellor Mittal, which SACP wants to be re-nationalised, the amalgamation of local munipalities into a metropolitan, corruption relating to provision of houses by government in particular the KwaMasiza area and service delivery. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster the SAPC’s District Secretary Sello Maetso says that

their posture towards the ANC Regional Conferences must be informed by the discussions in their higher structures and documents adopted as part of their ongoing work towards socialism. He also adds that they condemn party members who lead misguided marches to ANC offices and ANC-led municipalities. “We note distinct but specific tendencies by some of our members to commit tactical mistakes in relation to their involvement (in their capacity as ANC members) in the organisational challenges facing ANC leading to its 7th Regional Congress. We want Mittal to be given back to the people; we must also ensure that the move towards a Metro system is understood within the context of the struggle of the people and not through elitist understanding, “ Maetso says. Members in attendence resolved to ensure

that municipalities in the district work towards an ‘election budget’ to address key service delivery backlogs and to intensify service delivery in preparation for the 2016 local government elections with special emphasis being placed on the eradication of the bucket system, sealing of potholes, grass cutting, functioning of street lights and reduction of crime. The members of the DEC were elected as follows: District Secretary-Sello, Maetso, District Chairperson-Archie Mokanani, District Treasurer-Portia Moholo, District Deputy Secretary-Sheilah Monaheng, District Deputy Chairperson-Stone Liphoko. Additional Members Themba Motsepe, TembinSACP Sedibeng District Chairperson Ar kosi Pulu, Reginah Kgerokchie Mokanani gives his speech at the 6th ga, Sylvia Mohlahlo, NomVaal District Congress held at Maccauvlei sa Mooi, Pat Ramone, MuConference Centre. ziwethu Nonkowane, Max Nhlapo

64-year-old man beaten to death Mdududzi Mathebula

SEBOKENG. - Joseph Mokgwerane Masekoa (64) from Zone 3 was beaten so seriously that he died due to serious injuries to his head after spending 22 days in critical condition at Baragwanath Hospital. He died due to serious injuries to his head. The old man was apparently lost when he was beaten by a Lakeside resident. It was not clear why the assailant beat the victim so cruelly though the victim was drunk, say some of the residents who were at the scene. The assailant allegedly said, “I wanted his children to see me beating the hell out of him.” He said he used a tyre iron to beat him into a bleeding wreck. Dimakatso Masekoa, daughter of the deceased, says their family was devasta-

ted at the state in which their missing father was found: “My father drank a lot but he usually found his way back home. This time around it was a very sad and painful situation as we found him beaten up. We still don’t understand how he got beaten up and what was the reason.” Mosekoa was rushed to hospital where he was operated on and spent his last days in hospital: “It was heartbreaking to see my father in that condition. “I wonder why the person responsible for his death would do something like this? Some people are cruel. I hope God punishes him (the perpetrator) for what he did to us.” Sedibeng Ster contacted police spokesperson Sergeant Tshifiwa Mitileni who could not confirm the case at that time. The family has opened a case of murder.

Woman’s bones found in shallow grave

Mduduzi Mathebula

EVATON. - Elizabeth Jones was shocked when human bones were found in her yard recently, as she has been living there for more than 50 years. The skeleton was discovered when Jones was having her yard cleaned for the building of more shacks. According to stand-owner Jones, she wanted the new occupants to live on a dignified stand. Workers were surprised to find a skull as

they were cleaning. They ran like hell and urged Jones to call the police, who were subsequently deployed to the scene. The forensic team confirmed that the remains were those of a woman as they found clothes next to the skeleton. The skeleton had been covered with a blanket and a brassiere and pair of panties were found nearby. “I played here when I was young. I have always been here. I have never found anything like this. It was scary and shocking to see human bones,” said the 60-year-old gogo,

Jones says she wishes that police find out who the skeleton belongs to so that the family can have peace: “Surely the family is searching for her and she needs to be buried properly,” said Jones.

SEBOKENG. - Sabata Modibedi (50) insists that he is not married to his ex-girlfriend, Mampe Yvodia Sekonyela (52). “It was a ‘vat-en-sit’ that lasted for four years, before she disappeared. I have unsuccessfully searched for her at her relatives in Zone 13, Sebokeng. Modibedi said the only time he realised that he was supposedly married was when he found the documents. “The woman I dated was doing spring cleaning in the house when she came across the documents. “We were both equally surprised when we discovered that I am ‘married’ to a Yvodia Modibedi. “The documents do not state the date of the so-called marriage. No marriage certificate was attached either,” he said, except that it stated that they were married in community of property. “I could not believe my eyes and I went to the Department of Home Affairs. The officer

checked our files on the system and it confirmed that we are not married. When I asked him to make a print-out, I was told it was illegal. “Sekonyela has been gone for 15 years now and I am getting old. I want to marry the woman of my choice. All the women I met before never understood me. Now that I want to start a new life, Sekonyela and this fake marriage is standing in my way. “The officer at Home Affairs advised me to proceed with the marriage should I find ‘Miss right’.” Modibedi adds that he was out of the area on the day Sekonyela disappeared. By the time he returned home, there was nothing left in the house. No cooking pot or blanket was left behind. “I had to start from scratch.” The ‘couple’ never had any children together. Sekonyela’s relatives in Zone 13, Sebokeng, deny knowing her whereabouts.

9R_Na\ @R_R_\ The South African Communist Party (SACP) should be commended for the resolutions that they took at their District Conference recently. That they have promised to make sure that municipalities in the district address key service delivery backlogs and intensify service delivery gets thumbs up from me. Throughout South Africa what is needed

SEDIBENG STER

Taking care of the poor

is a complete shift of mentality. Millions of South Africans still do not have access to formal housing and lack basic service delivery. Like everyone else, those who have no access to formal housing need shelter from the cold and rain. If they do not have the resources to buy or rent property they must be accommodated, and it is the state that has a responsibility to do so. But many municipalities and provincial governments as well as the national government seem reluctant to deal pro-actively with those in desperate need of shelter and services. Instead of devising and implementing drastic and

far-sighted policies to accommodate those in need of shelter and services, authorities often seem to treat the homeless as an annoyance to be fought. Chapter 12 of the National Housing Code requires authorities like Municipalities to provide housing assistance in emergency housing circumstances. This means that the Municipality has a duty to provide assistance to people who find themselves in a housing and other emergency for reasons beyond their control. Recently in Sedibeng there have been unscrupulous estate agents who go around evicting peole from their legally owned houses with

claims that they bought the houses at an auctions. This should also be nipped in the butt. No one may be evicted from their home, or have their home demolished, without an order of court made after considering all the relevant circumstances. No legislation may permit uninformed evictions. Effective provision of basic services can contribute to state legitimacy and is vital for poverty reduction. It’s good to know that parties such as the SACP do have the communities’ interests at heart. Here is to hoping that they achieve what they have mapped out. Lerato...

Third SABC Crown Gospel Award Mduduzi Mathebula

SEDIBENG. - The seventh annual SABC Crown Gospel Award event took place last Sunday. Son of the soil Lefa Pheto came out with another award. “I was tested and tempted through Christ. I stood strong and life had its own way of pulling me down but I did not allow any of Satan’s ploys to work.” These are the words of the winner of the SABC Crown Gospel Award. Sedibeng Sa Bopelo is a programme hosted by Pheto and his wife on Sunday at Hope FM. The excitement is still fresh. When asked about his journey to the awards, Pheto says all glory should be given to the Lord: “I have nothing in me but God’s glory. I thank God for each and every moment He has granted me and my family. I give Him full credit,” says Pheto. He was further asked about the first launch of his radio career - did he see success coming as early as 2005 in the Zamdela Hall? “I never had such a picture of my life, but the direction I took I was God-driven,” says Pheto.

Midvaal Local Municipality recently had a hall full of young people when it hosted a Youth Entrepreneurship Workshop.

Midvaal’s youth attend Entrepreneurship Workshop

With his third SABC Crown Gospel Award to his name is Lefa Pheto.

MEYERTON. - Midvaal Local Municipality recently hosted a Youth Entrepreneurship Workshop. This was after the municipality identified a gap in knowledge on entrepreneurship within Midvaal’s young community. “Midvaal’s Speaker’s Office works closely with youth groups and forums, and realised that the area has a growing number of young entrepreneurs who face various challenges. They also identified that encouraging and supporting entrepreneurship can assist with youth economic development, and so it is important for hurdles to entrepreneurship to be removed or controlled as much as possible.” Says Aaliyah Dangor, Midvaal Municipality’s Media Liaison Officer. Dangor adds that partnerships between state and private institutions are one way to do this, and that the workshop allowed for a lot of networking to occur. Speakers for the

workshop included representatives from the National Youth Development Agency (NYDA), Gauteng Enterprise Propeller (GEP), SASOL, National Home Builders Registration Council, Basil Read, GDARD and Midvaal’s LED section. A vast range of topics were covered, including grants, services for youth owned enterprises, why businesses fail, how to tender, marketing, opportunity identification, skills development and training for young entrepreneurs. “Young entrepreneurs and unemployed youth from the area were invited, and over 200 people attended on the day. The feedback from them was extremely positive, with many requests for more events of this nature,” Dangor concludes. Midvaal’s Speaker, Councillor Freddie Peters, was pleased with the outcome of the event, and has committed to making it an annual event on Midvaal’s calendar.

Donation by sub-contractor

Lazarus Dithagiso

SEBOKENG. - Strengthening social cohesion, effort and nation building, Mautiwela Metal Merchants and Contractors donated food parcels to more than 40 elderly people. The Emfuleni Local Municipality MMC for Social Development and Health, Councillor Sello Pitso, acknowledged the contribution by Mautiwela for donating ahead of Christmas. The company is a sub-contractor at Cape Gate. The donation on November 25 came from Vusimzi Radebe and Pirr Meyer, both directors of Mautiwela at the Department of Social Services, Houtkop. Elderly people came from Sebokeng, Evaton, Bophelong, Sharpeville, Boipatong. Meyer said it will be bad to see thousands of the community enjoying Christmas on empty stomachs: “Our concern is to set an example for the other companies to plough back to the communities” Radebe said the fact that they served and lived in the same communities made it important to look back from where they had come. “Giving is very good and helps build the community,” said Radebe. Pitso also encouraged the communities to try do things for themselves: “We appreciate the job done by the company.” He advised the community to take advantage of space in their yards to plant vegetables. He pointed out that the government gives vegetable seeds and plants to community members so they could start. The ceremony was attended by regional Social Development director Cathy Jacobs.

ZAMDELA. - The Free State Department of Arts, Sports, Culture and Recreation has established an Interim Committee aimed at forming the Metsimaholo Municipality Writers Forum. At the meeting hosted at the Zamdela Arts Centre, on November 15 with guests speakers, Professor Selepe a facilitator and Dr Mathene Mahanke deputy director sports, Arts and Culture and also head of languages, it was indicated that there are a lot of talented writers in the area. The host was Lindi

Mkhwanazi, Coordinator of the Steering Committee. She said the aim is to attract writers and to unearth their creativity. The forum must have a subscription to keep it up and running. Dr Mahake said the writers’ organisation has the potential to take the talent of the writers to the next level. The National Arts Council is currently funding organisations to help underdeveloped communities to start writing. “We should expect Afrikaans-speaking communities to use our language as well. Gone are the days we used to apply for jobs, using Afrikaans as medium of language,” explained Dr Mahanke. The Interim committee will meet once per month until the formation of the Metsimaholo Local Municipality Writers Organisation is complete. Richard Makhalemele of Makhalemele and Associates sponsored soft drinks and meals.

ORANGE FARMS. - Ntando Duma is a 19year-old aspiring motivational speaker. Duma hosts the e-TV show called Crazy World Life that is broadcast on Thursdays at 16:00. Sedibeng Ster was privileged to meet this dynamic teenager. “I entered the competition by entering my video and it was uploaded onto their Facebook account for people to vote. Unfortunately at that time I didn’t make it and my colleague Lwando went through to the next round. I was then called because they were not happy with other contestants and as they say - the rest is history,” says the beautiful Duma. “Although I don’t have any formal training in acting, it is definitely something worth pursuing,” says Duma. She adds that she has won a bursary through Mo Flava from YFM and will study Film & Television. “ I am super excited because I have always wanted to study further.” Duma is currently a brand ambassador for VM Productions and a model for their website. “My partner and I have an organisation called Teen Inspire and we visit high schools and cover different topics. We talk about self-love and self-development. “Through our friends and family we donate matric dresses to matriculates. We also go to orphanages around the province to donate clothes and food,” says Duma.

Ntando Duma is making it big in the enter tainment industry.

Celebrating 10 years of University of Technology status

RESEARCH IS ORDER OF THE DAY IN GLOBAL VILLAGE

VUT ISAK STEYL STADIUM HOSTS O R TAMBO GAMES

Anne Naidu

In this day and age it has become imperative to ensure collaboration between policymakers, corporate entities, academics and NGOs for the generation of new knowledge. Governments, business, industry and communities have become reliant on university researchers to meet with the rapid changes in the technological era. To this end our academics have also engaged in extensive research projects, covering a variety of niche, market-specific research which will serve their target audiences. These projects cater for current and projected changes within the higher education system worldwide. There are several approved research focus areas that are currently underway at the Vaal University of Technology (VUT) and the institution is making significant

strides and aggressively pursuing avenues to improve its research culture. Research is an integral part of keeping the mind receptive. Researchers become inductive thinkers and reinvent, reconceptualise and reposition themselves within the ever-changing landscape of higher education. In today’s knowledge society, gaining new insights to convey to students is no longer a choice but an imperative. Each of the four faculties hosted the Annual Research Awards recognising academics who have achieved excellence in the field of their particular niche research areas. With globalisation, collaborative research is the order of the day, where applying more minds, thoughts and ideas to general problems or queries results in better solutions and results.

LOCAL SHORES – GLOBAL DREAMS their studies, but instead are privileged to be offered opportunities for international collaboration. Mr Sinovuyo Masikwana VUT’s SRC President, has been selected to participate in the 2015 Study of the US Institute for Student Leaders on Civic Engagement. The programme includes a four-week academy residency and a one-week study tour to a different part of the country. Leadership sessions and community service activities, as well as getting to know Americans, are also integral components of these institutes. Studying abroad provides an opportunity to expand one’s field of view and helps one to understand and analyse problems and phenomena from a longer-term, worldwide perspective. The experience of a university is, for most new students, a steep learning curve in gaining independence. But studying abroad takes that a whole step further; challenging students to reMr Sinovuyo Masikwana SRC President ally develop as individuals whilst gaining tremendous exposure to international Anne Naidu trends, skills and collaborating with forStudents of the Vaal University of Tech- eign students. Vaal University of Technology and Sedibeng District Municipality, are honoured to have hosted the OR Tambo Games on Friday 24 October 2014 at the Isak Steyl Stadium. The annual event, organised by the South African Local Government Association (SALGA), is in honour of the late ANC stalwart, Dr Oliver Reginald Tambo. The tournament gives municipalities an opportunity to compete against each other as the games rotate to different municipalities around the country. Sixteen sporting codes participated in the games. Present at the event were dignitaries from SALGA, Cllr Simon Mofokeng: Executive Mayor of Sedibeng District Munici¬pality and Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Professor Irene Moutlana. In her address,

Professor Moutlana said the university was gratified to host an event of such magnitude and that the games marked competitiveness, discipline and competence. “Through this ritual, we will keep the legacy of OR Tambo alive forever,” said Cllr Mpho Park Tau Chairperson of the PEC SALGA Gauteng. He thanked the university and municipality for their contribution and said he hoped it was an initiative that people could learn from. Cllr Mahole Simon Mofokeng: Executive Mayor in Sedibeng District Municipality declared the games officially open and announced the next host. The torch was lit as a symbol of the commencement of the games. The event was sealed with a gala dinner held at Emerald Casino where awards were conferred to the best performers

The VUT team dominated from the beginning of the game, seemingly motivated by the notion of making VUT history as the first VUT football team to hoist the provincial tournament trophy. The team won 2-1.

Both VUT men and women’s football teams deserved their finalist status after outstanding performances in the regular season of the 2014 USSA Gauteng “AMA Tuesdayz” football league. As finalists, the teams enjoy an automatic entry to the 2014 USSA national tournament that will be held from 1-5 December at Durban University of Technology. Some dev coaches THINK like “military generals”

Being a father is a full-time job and the same can be said of coaches, but many development coaches think coaching is just a hobby. NO! Coaching is a commitment just like being a father. Remember that as a coach, you are like a father to those kids. They look up to you. So coaches, be careful what you say or do in front of these kids. How can we expect our players to play for our national team knowing development coaches are not doing justice to the development of these youngsters? In fact, when our national teams are not doing well we should not blame the coaches

of national teams, but grassroots coaches in this country. There are a lot of things that Shooting From The Hip picked up since the MCS Sedibeng Cup started. Firstly, some of our boys are not well coached. Secondly, development coaches don’t want to empower themselves by reading coaching books to improve their knowledge. Thirdly, we train these boys as if we train horses and - come game time – they think exactly like horses: they will kick the hell out of everything that is in their way. Lastly, development coaches are not honest with these youngsters and every time these boys lose a game, development coaches blame referees or match officials, and the boys end up learning nothing from their masters. Shooting From The Hip is of the opinion that some development coaches no longer have respect for this beautiful game. In football,

or should I say in coaching, you never stop The Hip hopes some coaches can learn sometlearning. There will be little advancement in hing from their colleagues in this region – these boys’ football careers as long as our co- who still have respect for the sport - football - regardless of their achievements. aches think like ‘military generals.’ It is not about putting 11 players on the field. It all starts with training to prepare these youngsters for the future. 2 Leslie St, Cnr De Villiers, Vereeniging, Tel 016 422 8764, 016 422 8767 It is not winning that makes a coach We stock spare parts for most appliances. the best coach in the Fridge spares: Door Seal, thermostats, Gas etc. world, but about what kind of players Stove: Plates, thermostats, Door seals etc. one produces on and Vacuum cleaner hoses, filters etc. off the field. “Thumbs up to MMC of Sports” - Mpholo this is a step in the right direction. “The question I normally ask myself is: “How can you produce good players if you don’t have good facilities?’ Driving around on Sunday, watching our boys and girls playing at different venues, one becomes disappointed when you notice the state of the facilities,” says Mpholo. However, Mpholo feels that the facilities mentioned by the MMC in last week’s edition are not enough as he believes Zone 3 Stadium and other open grounds should also be attended to. Mpholo, who is passionate about golf, says the upgrading of the Evaton Mafatsana Golf Course and other different sporting facilities must be a

top priority. He adds, “After upgrading these facilities the onus rests on our shoulders to protect them. Saul Tsotetsi Sports Centre was recently fenced off but I am disappointed to notice how many illegal entrances there are. Sedibeng Regional Masters Football Association, Sedibeng Referees Association and the South African Football Coaches Association - Sedibeng - are fully behind the initiative to make Sedibeng the best.” In conclusion, Mpholo says, “Somebody from this area once said, ‘We don’t have the best but we are the best.’ Mr Radebe is one of the best – he needs our total support and commitment.”

SEDIBENG. - Emfuleni Sports MMC Shaka Radebe’s initiative to upgrade facilities was given the ‘thumbs up’ by at least one community member and sport fanatic – Martin Mpholo. This follows last week’s article published in Sedibeng Ster under the headline “Upgrading facilities” in which Radebe revealed that the municipality is committed to improving facilities in townships. This good news was welcomed by Mpholo, who believes this will improve the standard of sport in Sedibeng. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sport, Mpholo, who is also involved in many sports projects in this region, says

VANDERBIJLPARK. - The much anticipated local derby between Vaal Milano FC and Nale Academy lived up to expectations when these two rivals produced five star performances in the MCS Sedibeng Cup quarter finals at Shakespeare Stadium on Saturday. Local soccer fans came in numbers to watch these future Bafana Bafana stars showcasing their talent. The game was decided on penalties after a full-time score of 1 - 1. Vaal Milano won 4 - 3 on penalties. It was a game of two halves with Vaal Milano FC starting the game and it came as no surprise when they took an early lead. However, ‘Ama Cheese Boys’ (Nale Academy) came strongly into the second half, dominating the proceedings and their hard work was rewarded when Wandile Manqa scored an equaliser. At this stage it was one-way- traffic with Nale Academy throwing everything at the opponents. However, Vaal Milano could have wrapped up the game in the first half but failed to convert their chances into goals. Expect another thrill-a-minute encounter when those teams

who qualified for semi-finals lock horns this weekend. The teams that have booked their spot in the semi-finals are: U/13 Eya FC Nale Academy Bophelong Barcelona Benfica U/15 Nale Academy Vaal Milano Ikageng Dev FC Bophelong Milano U/17 Vaal Milano FC Mighty Stars FC Manyora FC Derthmond FC

Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sports, Mollo says the entry forms for the race are available at all their KFC outlets, Evaton Mall, Thabong Shopping Centre and Palm Springs KFC. He says the race is also part of the HIV and AIDS Awareness Campaign and they will donate the money they raise to selected centres. Mollo says last year’s fun run was a huge success and this year they will make it even

more spectacular with lot of prizes on the day of the event. The day programme starts at 08:00 with a 5km fun run, followed by the 10km fun run. The participating fee is R35 for those who will run as individuals. “The money we raise through the race will be donated to the needy in this area. With this little contribution we hope to reduce poverty in our community.

It is no secret that some of the centres or homes are desperate for help. We made a commitment to assist them as much as we can by hosting this fun run and we appeal to the whole Sedibeng community to come in large numbers to support this initiative. I believe together we can make a huge difference in our society,” says Mollo. He stresses that the race is open to everyone who wants to participate, young and old.
