Sedibeng boasts a Clean Audit again!

SEDIBENG. - The Sedibeng District Municipality excelled and was recognised for a clean audit, having been the first Gauteng municipality to reach the target last year (2012/2013) and successfully sustained the clean audit in 2013/2014. The auditor general (AG) of South Africa presented the 2013/2014 audit outcomes of all municipalities in Gauteng at a special handover ceremony held in Centurion last Tuesday. The honours for the district were multiplied as Midvaal became one of only two local municipalities in Gauteng to achieve the Clean Award target this year. Gauteng municipalities were making steady progress and overall 4 municipalities and 9 municipal entities reached the clean audit targets. Led by executive mayors Simon Mofokeng and Bongani Baloyi, the respective teams received their official audit reports as well as certificates and Trophies for their achievements from Gauteng Provincial Corporate Executive of the Office of the AG, Mabatho Sedikela.

The Sedibeng District Municipality and Midvaal Local Municipality teams boast a clean audit once again! Standing, from left, are Brendon Scholtz, Yunus Chamda, Albert de Klerk and Annette van Schalkwyk. Seated are (from left) Mayor Simon Mofokeng, Mayor Bongani Baloyi, councillor Patricia Hutcheson and Councillor Samuel Mokako.

15yearold found dead in neighbours toilet Mduduzi Mathebula

SHARPEVILLE. - The Mohlamme family was devastated when they woke up to find a corpse in their toilet in Putswasteen on Sunday. The dead body was found by a family member at around 05:00 in the early hours of the morning. The news spread through the entire community like a wild fire. “It was a young girl maybe around the age of 15,” said George Mohlamme who discovered the body. The body was found in the toilet in a sitting position. Her eyes were still open. “I have never seen anything like this before.

“The image of this girl’s face still comes to mind over and over again,” says Naomi Mohlamme, the sister of the witness. She adds that they called the police and ambulance. “We could tell she was deceased and her face was familiar,” said Naomi. The community was on tenterhooks to know who the girl was. Police closed off access to the scene. Two hours after the pathologists had taken the corpse to the mortuary a member of the family was found five houses from the scene. The deceased was identified as Moipone Maloka (15).

47 packets of nyaope seized

VANDERBIJLPARK. - Nyaope is one of the biggest problems the community faces and will continue to face, especially during the festive season. In April ‘nyaope’ was declared illegal in South Africa and those found guilty of using or of being in possession of nyaope face a maximum of 15 years in prison, or a fine as determined by the court. Female members of the SAPS Vaal Rand Flying Squad and the SAPS Crime Intelligen-

ce Unit recently arrested a 28-year-old suspect for being in possession of 47 packets of nyaope. The total street value of the drugs found is estimated to be worth R2 370. SAPS Corporate Communications Warrant Officer Kinnie Steyn says, “The arrest followed information received from the public that was followed up and they managed to catch him red-handed.” Steyn adds that the suspect will appear in the Vanderbijlpark Magistrates Court soon.

From left to right is Constable Mammy Letanta, Constable Kim Mthembu and Constable Sheez Baloyi who arrested a 28-year-old in possession of 47 packets of nyaope with an estimated street value of R2 370.

Does Hlongwane owe municipality? Moleboheng Chaha

ELM Mayor Greta Hlongwane at a recent IDP meeting in Sebokeng where she told people to pay monies owed to the municipality. Hlongwane is allegedly one of the people owing the municipality. Photo: Moleboheng Chaha.

SEDIBENG. - The Democratic Alliance (DA) has called for the suspension of Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM) Mayor Greta Hlongwane following a recent revelation that she allegedly owes the municipality in rates and taxes. Hlongwane is always heard telling people to pay their municipal accounts at community gatherings, even those that have nothing to do with the payment of municipal accounts. Documents revealing Hlongwane’s state of accounts were sent to Sedibeng Ster following a national newspaper revelation that she owes ELM more than R20 000 in unpaid rates and taxes. Hlongwane’s spokesperson, Pinky Mofokeng denies that the mayor owes the municipality and states that the mayor is not receiving special treatment as the mayor is not exempt from municipal accounts. Democratic Allowance (DA) Constituency Head in Emfuleni and MPL Kingsol Chabalala says, “We call on Premier David Makhura to suspend the mayor immediately and set a strong example that this type of abuse of power will not be tolerated. This is the kind of abuse that the DA wishes to prevent in its court action to prevent the Emfuleni and Midvaal merger.”

Reverend Thabo Miya of the Arise and Shine Bible Church was left with nothing but an altar after a strong wind blew away the corrugated iron church structure, leaving neighbours with damages. This happened in Rust-ter-Vaal. Photo: Lazarus Dithagiso.

Storm blows away church structure

Lazarus Dithagiso

RUST-TER-VAAL. - A strong wind completely destroyed the structure of the Arise and Shine Bible Church. The incident happened on November 26 at about 21:45. The church’s Reverend Thabo Miya said neighbours were rudely awoken by a loud noise. The damages, estimated at R90 000, include damage to a neighbour’s roof, two geysers and shacks. The storm blew the corrugated iron structure of the church apart. Miya, who lives nearby, said he thanks God for His mercy in that there were no casualties. Luckily, people were already in their houses when the storm destroyed the structure on Eiken Street. On the subject of repairs to his neighbours’ houses,

he made a ‘humble appeal’ to ‘good Samaritans’ to act on behalf of the congregation. Any kind of donation that will help repair damages is welcome. The fact that the structure of the church was blown apart by strong winds with noone inside might call for the help from Social Development. Emfuleni Local Municipality Health and Social Development MMC Councillor Sello Pitso said that this needs donations from the public or private sectors. Pitso said, “As the government we don’t have a budget to assist at that level. Should any injuries or casualties be reported, the municipality will be able to assist. It’s a pity what happened to the church structure. I hope the Reverend speedily gets help from the community.”

9R_Na\ @R_R_\ In South Africa while some get lenient sentences others get to walk scot free for the murders that they have committed. Justice Minister Michael Masutha is well within his right to request a full report from the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), detailing the investigation and prosecution of the Shrien Dewani case and the lack of guilty verdicts in two other prominent mur-

South Africa is going to the dogs! ders: The case against Oscar Pistorious and the investigation into the murder of Bafana Bafana captain Senzo Meyiwa. Masutha has demanded the report on why this and other high profile cases have been lost by state prosecutors after Dewani’s not guilty verdict was announced. This is going too far! Masutha rightfully wants to reflect on how the system has failed in all these high profile cases. The system is falling off the rails, piece by piece. The decision to dismiss Shrien Dewani’s case was a mockery of the justice system which ultimately leaves unanswered questions as to the treatment meted out to suspects

that come from well-to-do backgrounds. It is unfortunate that Dewani has been acquitted because I believe that he knew more. The cases collapsed because of shoddy police investigation and something needs to be done before all hardcore criminals end up roaming our streets. In these cases there were apparently so many lies, mistakes and inconsistencies, that one simply cannot know where the lies end and where the truth begin. Dewani should have been questioned on how he got to the Khayelitsha Police Station so shortly after the murder of his wife; why was he not injured at all; what lead to the

circumstances that caused Dewani to become so close to the people who confessed to murdering his wife and left him unscathed. Why would strange people in a strange country make up a story and even be willing to go to prison for many years in order to implicate Dewani in a conspiracy to murder his wife? Like one writer says, ‘too many criminals are beating the judicial process and escaping incarceration.’ I differ not with the statement. Something needs to be done and done soon otherwise South Africa is just short of going...yes, to the dogs. Lerato…

VANDERBIJLAPRK.- Air Products South Africa and Sasol Chemical Industries signed a landmark agreement which will see Air Products purchase the Sasolburg A2100 air separation unit (ASU), and simultaneously commence with a new long-term supply agreement. The agreement brings the ownership of this facility ‘full circle’: it was originally designed and constructed by Air Products in 1997, and has to date been operated and maintained by Air Products for Sasol on a contract basis. Going forward, Air Products will continue to generate oxygen and nitrogen for the Sasolburg chemical complex. However, the company will be able to extract further value for both parties via the integration of the plant into its wider supply chain. This will include the generation and sale of by-products such as liquid nitrogen and liquid argon, according to Mike Hellyar, managing director of Air Products South Africa. “Our purchase of the A2100 from Sasol will have numerous benefits for both parties, and for other key customers. The A2100 is linked via pipeline to our flagship production facility at Vanderbijlpark - including our new state-of-the-art ‘G-Plant’ - which will also supply a significant portion of Sasol’s industrial gas requirements. “Changing from contract operator to owner of the plant creates synergies which will provide a better balance of supply-and-demand of gaseous products. These synergies will not only provide opportunities to improve energy efficiency, but also create a solid platform from which Air Products can continue to ensure optimal customer service levels and long-term security of supply to the merchant industrial gas market,” says Hellyar. In line with the agreement, Sasol Chemicals Industries will effectively outsource its industrial gas production at the Sasolburg site, while ensuring the continuation of the long-term supply relationship it has enjoyed with Air Products South Africa for many years. “This transaction supports our approach of outsourcing critical activities, which are

not our core competency, to specialist technology and service providers such as Air Products South Africa,” says Bernard Klingenberg, Sasol Executive vice president: Southern Africa Operations. “This agreement and the commencement of the long-term supply contract with Air Products is further testimony to our confidence in their supply chain and customer service capacity and expertise,” Klingenberg adds. Throughout the purchase agreement process, Air Products has ensured compliance with national competition legislation, obtaining the official approval from the Competition Commission in August this year. “Gaining approval from the Commission was a major milestone, and we are very pleased to have been given the opportunity to leverage our existing network to create further value within our long-term gas supply agreement with Sasol. As the leading producer of industrial gas in South Africa, and as a supplier of air separation technology and services, our relationship with Sasol goes back a long way,” Hellyar remarks. In June 2014, Air Products launched its state-of-the-art R800 million ASU ‘G-Plant’, which was the result of its ongoing mutually-beneficial relationship with Sasol. The new facility will supply Sasol’s expansion programme in Sasolburg with pipe-lined gaseous oxygen and nitrogen. With a production capacity of over 2 500 tonnes of liquid and gaseous product per day, ‘G-Plant’ has further cemented Air Products’ reputation for ensuring service delivery and continuity of supply to its customers. “We look forward to leveraging the synergies of both the A 2100 and ‘G-Plant’, which will not only create benefits for ourselves and Sasol, but for other key customers in the merchant gas market. This transaction represents the consolidation of our existing supply infrastructure, thereby supporting our overarching, long-term capital investment strategy to ensure optimal customer service levels and security of industrial gas supply,” Hellyar concludes.

A freight and Logistics Sasol and Airproduct hub in the Vaal region in full circle

SEDIBENG. The pursuit of the development of a Freight and Logistics hub in the Vaal Region took a huge step forward when a high level delegation of government and business met in Three Rivers , Vereeniging last week. Led by the executive mayor of the Sedibeng District and the MEC for Roads and Transport in the Gauteng Province, captains of industry, academics and members of the Mayors Investment Council exchanged views on the feasibility and impact of a Freight and Logistics hub in the region. Sedibeng’s Local Municipalities, Emfuleni, Midvaal and Lesedi were also in attendance to add to the discussions. After frank exchanges on the subject, the meeting resolved to reconvene in a working session in January 2015 to examine all the

research papers and available data which would contribute to a fully-fledged feasibility study. The working session, which will be convened under the auspices of Sedibeng District Municipality and the Provincial Department of Roads and Transport, will work with the business sector in developing a feasibility study. Strong arguments have been made for the Gauteng Province to advance the timeline for Freight and Logistics hub in the Vaal Region. If the feasibility study confirms the need, support of industry and sustainability, the Gauteng Provincial Government will review its time frames that could see the development of a Freight and Logistics hub sooner rather than later in the Vaal Region.

Communities, police, municipalities, churches pledge against abuse

Lazarus Dithagiso

SASOLBURG. - Women are our friends, children our future generation. Any abuse on them needs to be reported, said Pastor Bodibe during the ceremonial launching of the 16 Days of Activism Against Women and Children. The launching in partnership with the South African Police, Fezile Dabi District Municipality, Metsimaholo Local Municipality including stakeholders, was hosted at the Boiketlong community hall on November 21. Pastor Bodibe said as we pledge through prayer against abuse, the males should be included as they are also the victims of abuse. The executive Mayor of Fezile Dabi District, Moeketsi Moshodi strongly warned the perpetrators of abuse that they don’t belong in the society. He mentioned that one of his relatives was sentenced to 18 year-imprisonment for alleged rape. “I feel that the court has done perfectly job.’ No matter my status as the leader of the community, wrong should be wrong. “People know about the abuse but they try to play ignorant. People can no longer attend night vigils because of the monsters terrorising our sisters and children on the way to night services “Lets work together with the Police, Social Workers and other Departments to win the battle against the abuse,” said Moshodi. Colonel Coenie Harley, Station Cluster Commander of Sasolburg said the police will leave no stone unturned when coming to abusers. “As the police we will make sure that perpetrators receive hash sentences. As the societies, we must live free

in our country. We cannot be scared of people living around us, he said.” Dr Ivan Zwane of the

Sasol said 16 days is not enough. For the community to say they are winning the battle and must be extended to 365 days.

EVATON. - ‘Count me in. Together moving forward to a non-violent South Africa”. This was the theme for this year on 16 Days of Activism against the abuse of women and children. Speaker after speaker said everyone is made in the image of God. Emfuleni municipal employees took to the streets to march against the abuse of children, women and men on November 29. They marched from outside Evaton Mall to Evaton West Park. Organiser Martin Mpholo said the community still experiences abuse and violence by other human beings. “Stop bad behaviour and change into a better person created by God,’ he said.

The day embraced a candlelight commemoration of World Aids Day on December 1. The employees humbled themselves before the face of God. Mpholo said the South African Masters and Legends Football Association – Sedibeng region - included men’s organisations representing the main perpetrators of violence and abuse against women and children. These came out crystal clear with messages to encourage that ‘No woman and no child should be abused and killed.’

A year-end message by the Executive Mayor of the Sedibeng District Municipality, Cllr. Mahole Simon Mofokeng to the people of Sedibeng Happy Festive Season's Greetings to all the people of Sedibeng and those who paid us a visit both from other regions and the world. 2014 was indeed a glorious year. It was a year that marked the fifth general elections where those of us who are eligible to vote took a moment to participate in the critical activity as we looked forward to the new administration. The new administration is given the mandate by you to embark on radical socio-economic change. Indeed those who are eligible to vote did exercise this universal right to elect those who would govern them. Because of this universal exercise we witnessed the incoming fifth administration which boldly declared the commitment to serve the people. It is with this declaration that the Sedibeng District Municipality has since come up wit h visionary development that aim to take this region forward.

s n o s a e S ings t e e r G

No matter how we evaluate 2014, we can see the development. This starts with the Sedibeng District Municipality receiving a Clean Audit as the first Gauteng Municipality to reach the target of 2012/2013. As we end this year, which is better off than 20 years ago, we can dare say challenges will forever embrace us each passing year; however those challenges bring great

opportunities as we continue to strive for a better life for all. There is visible progress in reducing poverty through t h e E x p a n d e d P u b l i c Wo r k s Programmes. As you were far away from towns and places of work before the democratic dispensation, change continues to manifest. The K55 route which joins Steelpark via Boipatong and Sharpeville to Vanderbiljpark are few examples of new developments. We have built strong partnerships for job creation and laid a firm foundation to improve infrastructure development. The upgrade of infrastructure is underway. Road infrastructure has improved lives of motorists and commuters with construction of more than 1800 kilometers of roads. 2014 also remains the first anniversary of the passing on of our global icon, Tata Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela. The role he played in South Africa, the world and in the region of Sedibeng will forever be remembered. Millions of South Africans deserve praise for the role they played in bringing about freedom and democracy, for they contributed in various ways. We must therefore use 2014 as special year that paved a way forward into a

third decade of democracy. We must enter this decade in a collective discipline that will progressively make South Africa the free, non-racial, nonsexist democratic society we now live in. This needs all of us to work together, united in our diversity. L e t u s e n te r 2 0 1 5 w i t h m o re commitment effort to recognize and highlight what is good and great about our region in 2014 and make it better going forward. I wish all people of Sedibeng and the visitors to the region of Sedibeng, a Merry Christmas and prosperous 2015.

Fiona and Moses disclose their status Mduduzi Mathebula

EVATON.- Mpumelelo Clinic at Evaton North commemorated World AIDS dayon an emotional note with two renowned counselors disclosing their status in the full view of families and friends on Thursday. Clinic Managers graced this day celebrated due to the many souls that have fallen due to the diseases that has spread the entire world. It was a successful event that was full of information, love and support for those who are living with HIV. Nurse Head Dali Radebe clarified the purpose of the day to the multitudes. AIDS activist Trephine Kheswa, who conducted the event, was acknowledged by many as one of those who support people living with HIV. HIV activist Moses Setseli, who lives with the virus, told the attendees about his status and how people mocked him after they discovered he was ‘positive’: “I was labelled and had to endure the stigma that comes with the disease. I was called names but I dealt with that. Life is unpredictable so living with HIV is not a death sentence and many people can attest,” says Setseli.

Setseli is a counsellor at Joadio Clinic where he speaks to people about knowing their status and the importance of knowing it. HIV Counsellor Fiona Ntshingila, also disclosed

her status to the entire community and told them her sad story and how she found out she was positive. “I m living positive after having been in an emotionally abusive marriage. “Living with HIV is not a death sentence but a wake-up call to take care of yourself. “We are still testing people who are positive

in 2014. Something is wrong with us. By now we know all the logistics of contracting HIV. Parents and children: this is a moment we try to learn more about this disease and stop spreading it,” said Ntshingila as she urged young people to look after themselves.

year medical student. Alison McKie, Group Manager, Marketing at Sun International, said the company had embarked on an incredible journey last year that changed the concept of the Miss South Africa Pageant. “It was one of our most successful years ever with Rolene Strauss being crowned Miss South Africa 2014.” Sun International, long-time licence holders of the Miss South Africa title, along with Cell C decided that the pageant needed an exciting makeover in order to be relevant to a contemporary South Africa. “This was achieved this year,” McKie said, “and we are now moving into bigger and better things.” Cell C’s new three-year-contract with the Miss South Africa Pageant is in line with their Believe Manifesto and on-going strategy to empower women. The Miss South Africa Pageant has become part and parcel of South African life since the first contest in 1956 with many of the winners becoming household names and going on to lucrative and long-lasting careers. Doing good and leaving a legacy is an integral part of the Miss South Africa philosophy. The pageant winner will be the spokesperson for the Cell C Take a Girl Child to Work Day® and will endeavour to raise funds to provide financial assistance to girl children from disadvantaged backgrounds to further their studies. For the first time the semi-finalists will all visit their home-towns where they can meet and engage with their own communities. The 10 finalists will be revealed early next year as the build-up to the glittering occasion continues. Sun International announced the three hopefuls who will join the Top 24 semi-finalists to compete for the Miss South Africa title in March next year. The new contestants are Kirsten Hornby (24) of Ruimsig, Roodepoort, Gauteng; Ntsiki Mkhize (23) of Kliprivier, Midvaal, Gauteng and Tegan Goldman (22) of Port Elizabeth, Eastern Cape. They will replace Kelly Davids and Altina Vries of the Western Cape and Aseza Matanzima of the Eastern Cape who were disqualified from the pageant because they had visible tattoos. When told that she had made the Top 24, Kirsten Hornby, who works full time in the fight against human trafficking, said it was “the most surprising call of my life. I had completely closed off the idea of ever getting in. I feel incredibly blessed to be here and plan not to take this opportunity for granted.” Both Ntsiki Mkhize, who had entered the Miss South Africa Pageant before, and Tegan Goldman said they were delighted to be part of the Miss South Africa event.

Care workers receive vital training

VEREENIGING. - Abused and traumatised children need to be treated with caution, which is why it is important for a caregiver

to acquire certain types of skill. Sedibeng Children’s Haven and Twin Oaks Skills Training Academy joined forces in developing a unique Skills Training Programme for Child and Youth Care Workers (CCW). Anet Hoof (manager – Sedibeng Children’s Haven) and Margie Calaça (MD Twin Oaks Training) utilised their individual expertise to develop this programme. “Although sometimes challenging, it can be a very rewarding career to follow. Having a passion for children is a good start but gaining knowledge and skills is equally important,” says Hoof. Hoof completed her MA degree in Social Work and Calaça has more than 28 years’ experience in the field, has an MA degree in Industrial Psychology with 10 years’ experience in training and development. Hoof adds that the CCW Programme is designed for those who are already working as CCWs and those who would like to pursue a career in this field. Calaça says, “What makes this training so unique is that students are not only equipped with proper theory but are also trained in practical skills. “This enables students completing this programme to immediately apply what they have learned in the workplace.” The CCW training programme consists of 15 modules that are completed over a year. Modules include subjects such as The traumatised Child, Self-Awareness Training and Developmental stages of children, amongst others. Anyone interested in more information regarding the CCW training can contact Anet Hoof on 082 335 7763 or Margie Calaça on 076 413 8873.

Drawing boards not for coaches! The problem with Sedibeng development coaches is that they don’t want to acknowledge when their colleagues supersede them. No, they will look for excuses every time they get beaten. Some coaches must just accept that football has changed and so they also need to change. Football is no longer as it was ten or 20 years ago. Those coaches you underestimate have also ‘upped’ their game and have empowered themselves to become better coaches. Some deve-

lopment coaches do everything in their power to empower themselves to become better coaches. Coaches, why can’t you compliment your colleague after they beat your team rather than look for excuses after the game? There are certain aspects that a development coach must consider. Point in case, make introspection on how your team trains and plays before you accuse referees of ‘helping’ the other team. Some development teams in this region are exposed to international play and compete against the best development teams in this country. It doesn’t mean if you have beaten your colleague many times in the past that you will still be able to. This is what I always tell development coa-

ches; “Whether you win or lose, you will still be a soccer player. Winners don’t learn much. Losers learn. The more you lose, the more you learn, the more you learn, the stronger you become. And the day will come that you will win. And from that day on, you will always win.” This is the reality of football. If you beat your opponents week-in-and-week-out, it does not necessarily mean that they are not improving with every game. Development coaches give credit where it is due! Learn to compliment your fellow coach when he is better than you or when his team is better than yours. The problem with most of coaches is that they are used to success and when they fail they don’t want to accept it. Instead of going to the training ground they go to the drawing board.

Drawing boards are not for coaches but for administrators. I find it very strange when coaches blame referees if their teams loses despite the fact that they don’t do justice when it comes to coaching. It is lack of sportsmanship to blame referees when you lose the game. Shooting From The Hip’s message to all the development coaches in this region is - don’t cheat your players, give them proper training physically and mentally to use them as a weapons come match day. If our boys are not mentally and psychologically ready for the game - they will blame everything on referees when they can’t play. Coaches, the hard work starts at the training ground not on the day of the match. LEARN and LIVE!

Promoting grassroots football SEBOKENG. - Sedibeng was once again in full swing conducting football clinics in Evaton West recently. The organisation publicist Martin Mpholo hailed these clinics a success as they are designed to unearth more talent in this region. He says the response was positive as kids from the area swarmed to the clinics, along with their coaches. Mpholo reveals that the South African Football Coaches Associations will continue with these clinics during the school holidays from Monday to Friday at the Zone 17 Stadium and Evaton West community park. According to Mpholo all players, both girls and boys between the ages of six and10 are welcome. He says

even up and coming coaches are welcome to sharpen their skills. “Parents are also requested to attend to show support for the children because we need everyone to improve the standard of football in our region. It is not only the responsibility of the South African Football Coaches Association but the community as a whole,” says Mpholo. Some local coaches involved with the programme include Mondli Nkosi and Mfanafuthi Masondo. Nkosi is responsible for Zone 7 while Mansono is responsible for the Evaton West area. For more information call Nkosi on 0730786823 or Masono on 0719982004. SAFCA - Sedibeng can be contacted on 082 2926 204.

MCS Sedibeng Cup winning teams crowned Zacharia Nale

SHARPEVILLE. - The MCS Sedibeng Cup came to an end in style at the George Thabe Stadium over the weekend. The tournament started three weeks ago and local soccer fans came in their numbers. There was lot of entertainment in the form of Banyana Banyana cheerleaders, ball jugglers and much more. The first final saw Benfica FC crowned the 2014 MCS Sedibeng Cup champions

in the u/13 category. This was after they beat Bophelong Barcelona FC 4 - 3 on penalties. While Nale Academy successfully defended their title when they beat their bitter rivals Vaal Milano 5 - 2 in a minute-thriller final. In the senior finals Real Barcelona FC once again beat Vaal Milano 1 - 0 to be crowned the champions. This Sebokeng-based side proved to be a hoodoo to Vaal Milano FC. In the other final, Manyora FC beat their

neighbours Dertmond FC 2 - 0 to be crowned the MCS Sedibeng Cup champions in the u/17 category. There were also individual awards such as the Player of the Tournament, Top Goal Scorer and Team of the Tournament Award. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sport, the tournament director Monge Gusha says this year’s tournament was a great success taking into consideration the turnout on the day.

This is some of the action during the MCS Sedibeng Cup finals held at George Thabe Stadium in Sharpeville on Sunday.

WE ARE

All eyes on the Pooe Festive Tournament Zacharia Nale

EVATON. - With the MCS Sedibeng Cup over, the focus shifts to the Pooe Festive Soccer Tournament scheduled to kick off this Thursday. This was revealed to Sedibeng Ster Sport by tournament coordinator Mondli Nkosi. The tournament is scheduled to take place at the Behaman Rover FC hard-surface soccer grounds in Evaton. According to Nkosi, the tournament will start this Thursday with the u/13s, u/15s, u/17s and u/19s. For the first time in the history of the tournament their u/19 division will be introduced. Nkosi believes there is a serious need for this category seeing that when these boys turn 18 or 19 they are lost to football. The decision to introduce the u/19 category was welcomed by many teams who believe this will help raise the standard of football in this region. Nkosi says it makes sense to have this age category, taking into consideration that a Promotion League is played by the players who are 19-years-old and under. “We saw it fitting to add this category because in the past we lost many players, especially those who are 18 and 19 years old. We want to accommodate everyone in this tournament because it is all about development. Remember the priority of the tournament is development and giving these youngsters a platformfrom which to showcase their God-given talent. “We don’t want to see them end up involved in crime or misconduct,” says Nkosi. Nkosi says this is the only tournament that brings the Sedibeng community together for the better part of the festive season especially with the PSL teams on Christmas breaks. The tournament attracts many soccer spectators all over the Gauteng province and this year will not be an exception.
