Rescue mission to save cattle

SEDIBENG. - The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) Vanderbijlpark, Vereeniging, Alberton, Johannesburg, Roodepoort and the National Council of SPCAs (NSPCA) launched an emergency rescue mission after a truck transporting approximately 100 cattle overturned on the N1 near the Grasmere toll gate plaza last week. The SPCA workers were assisted by Midvaal SAPS and local Fire and Rescue Units including the Gauteng Traffic Department. NSPCA spokesperson Andries Venter

says, “The cattle were on a double decker trailer and were being taken from the Free State to Bapsfontein when the driver of the vehicle lost control and the truck overturned. It is alleged that bricks or similar objects had been thrown from a bridge which led to the accident.” According to Venter, the mission included closing the northbound highway to enable the SPCA/NSPCA rescue operation to proceed without disturbing traffic. “Jaws of Life were needed to enable SPCA

and NSPCA personnel to reach trapped animals, some of whom were injured beyond salvation were emergency slaughtered at the scene. “The truck and the remaining cattle were taken to the destination farm where the off-loading was monitored into the early hours of the morning by SPCA personnel.” concludes Venter. He condemns the actions of a mob said to have chased some of the cattle and slaughtered it. Some animals were unable to escape and were stolen and slaughtered by the eager crowd.

Police Reservists’ contracts to be terminated? Lazarus Dithagiso

MEYERTON. - Some police reservists have been slapped with a notice of possible termination of services. The notices come after video-footage showed armed members entering the shops of foreign nationals in Loch Street. Complainants opened a case of fraud and business robbery at the police station. Constable Maria Mazibuko confirmed that the suspects, who do not receive stipends, were served with a notice. They are allowed to either submit a letter stating why they should not be dismissed or consult their representatives within seven working days, said Mazibuko. She said the matter is still under investigation. Police could not confirm the total number of reservists served with notices. Meyerton Ster, sister newspaper of Sedibeng Ster , recently reported that ‘the lives of business people are being ruined by problematic ele-

ments.’ It further reported that ‘CPF members had been fingered for terrorising foreign shop-owners.’ The owners, who begged for equal protection from Police, were confronted and had firearms pointed at them by the alleged CPF members. Shop owners alleged that some of the members were Police reservists. According to the letter of voluntary resignation sent to the reservists - in the hands of Sedibeng Ster - in terms of paragraph 36 of national instruction 3/2014, reasons for termination are serious allegations as per trio crime business robbery in Meyerton. The letter was signed by both the station commissioner of Meyerton, Lieutenant Colonel ML Landingwe and Vereeniging Station Commissioner Brigadier Pule Mokoena on January 13. Failing to respond within a specific period, the suspects are faced with no option but resignation. The suspects’ names and their addresses in Henley-on-Klip are known to Sedibeng Ster.

VANDERBIJLPARK.- They are everywhere, taking every risk to make sure that they survive. Sedibeng Ster took to facebook to find out what the public thinks about street kids and these were their comments: Fanelo Maseko: We mustn’t help because we are afraid that we might be in the same situation; we must help because it’s the right thing to do! Motseki Mabuya: I know this boy but I forget his name. He is among the Vanderbijlpark street kids who stays at the taxi rank that I used to work with while at VUT fm. The only option they want including himself is our pity and nothing else. Any alternative to better them especially this one (boy) they don’t need it. Not all of them are like him though. Ntombi Dhlamini: Instead of giving money, I give food. Money in some cases is used to buy glue and other drugs. Naledi Talencia Thapeli-Zwane: Instead of giving them money rather give them jobs or food, ‘give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.’ Community members and leaders should come together to find sustainable plans to

help Vaal street kids provide for themselves instead of just looking away and treating them like they aren’t worthy of better. Thabiso Motshegoa: I don’t turn a blind eye. I turn clearly open eyes, if there’s such. I don’t give to these guys on traffic lights and I’m not ashamed to say it. Government takes money from my salary which they call tax, so that these boys can go to school for free, pay less at clinics and hospitals. So there’s my contribution...I work hard so governement can tax me more to subsidise someone Norma Mbele: It kills ma soul and I wish I caould help. Sipho Maseko: Try giving one work to do; they’ll spit on your face. Hotlips Matekane Alina: By helping others u help yourself too...hai mara hlee. Veronica Ramakgobotla: I’m so touched... Nhlapo burgled VEREENIGING. - The home of Archie Nhlapo, a popular TV presenter and well renowned socialite, was burgled in BedworthPark on Saturday night. The break-in happened on Saturday while Nhlapo was not there. Apparently an implicated suspect is Nhlapo’s ex-girlfriend who apparently lives in Soweto. The complainant’s house was turned upsidedown. He alerted the police about the break-in and the Police snagged a lead to Soweto, where all Nhlapo’s items were recovered. The suspects focused pretty much on electronic appliances, from the TV to the DJ sound system, from a professional video-camera to clothes, including the safe. All were taken. “I think they would have killed me or worse if they had found me, judging by the way they broke into the house,” says the victim.

A BMW 650i was among the goods stolen at Nhlapo’s house. Police marched to Soweto where they arrested a female suspect, who was later detained in the Vereeniging Police cells. Two possible suspects are at large, one of whom is said to be in possession of the stolen car. This suspect is allegedly a Police officer. Captain Fikile Funda says they are going to track him down: “He has two options - we track him down by force or he hands himself over.” Funda confirms that a female suspect has been arrested and will soon appear in the Vereeniging Magistrates Court. A case of house-breaking and robbery has been opened and is being investigated, says Funda. A BMW simi lar to this one was al so stolen from Bonga ni Nhlapo's house during the breakin.

More heads to roll in traffic officer’s fraud case Lazarus Dithagiso

VANDERBIJLPARK. - Suspended! That’s the senior Emfuleni Local Municipality traffic superintendent who allegedly defrauded poor, unemployed people of thousands of rands. Her suspension comes after complaints in a newspaper article headlined ‘ELM traffic

officer defrauded the unemployed.’ The officer from Falcon Ridge, Vereeniging, allegedly received over R424 000 from more than 62 people in exchange for jobs. For each one to secure work, they had to pay between R6 000 and R8 000. Other families said they paid R18 000 for three people.

The disgruntled people believed the officer as she was driving a state vehicle and wore a uniform. “We were under the impression that she was ‘kosher’ (legit),” they said. Johanna Yika, 54, a recruiter and also a victim said the officer or Emfuleni Local Municipality must pay back their money. The money received from the unemployed was named “digaretene”, meaning “curtains”. Once “digaretene” failed to produce work the victims became angry. What angered the victims was when the suspect no longer took their calls. The defrauded people said they planned to march to the home of the suspect to demand their money. Well-placed, reliable source in the Human Resource Department said with confidence

that the suspect is not acting alone in the scandal. It involves Emfuleni Local Municipality MMCs whose names are known to Sedibeng Ster. The MMCs are apparently trying by ‘hook or crook’ to pay back the money before they are named in public. Apparently this is after the traffic officer promised that she would not go down alone. “Wait and see. heads will roll ‘they’ try to implicate me alone,” she was heard saying Stanley Gaba, Emfuleni Local Municipality spokesperson, confirmed the suspension of the officer on full payment pending the investigation and a possible disciplinary inquiry effective from January 23. An independent investigating team has been appointed, said Gaba

New twist in corruption scandal... Zacharia Nale

VANDERBIJLPARK.- Following Sedibeng Ster’s report about two Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM) officials from the department of Arts and Culture implicated in corruption, new information has come to light. The report stated that the officials were claiming hefty amounts of money from the ELM as payment for artists they had booked for ‘gig’s’ while taking almost a third of the money for themselves thereby robbing poor local artists which is something that has apparently been happening for a long time, according to the victims. Information reaching Sedibeng Ster this week reveals that money has been offered to the artists to withdraw the cases they have lodged with ELM on the matter. Last week Sedibeng Ster reported that the two officials are being investigated. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster, the artists claim that they were offered money to drop the cases against the involved officials but they rejected the offer since the matter has been referred to the ELM Hu-

man Resources Department for further investigation. “It is not as if we want someone to lose their jobs but we want justice to be done because for too long now these things have been happening to us. They know some of us are desperate and we will do anything to get these ‘gigs’. Yes we want our money back but dropping charges won’t justify what they did to us. The only thing we want is to get our money but in the right way. We don’t want anybody to lose his or her job because we know how difficult it is to be out of a job. “They want to get to the root of this but in a wrong way,” said the artists in an exclusive interview with Sedibeng Ster vowing that they will not let the matter drop. When approached for comment Emfuleni Local Municipality spokesperson Klaas Mofomme says this just remains as allegations until they get an official report from the said department. “I’m not aware of the allegations except what I read in the newspaper. I will be waiting for a full report from the said department about the matter,” he says.

Jealousy does breed hatred! I am never one to argue with a fool because, as my tertiary lectures taught me, an empty tin makes the most noise! So you will understand my annoyance when I had to explain myself to one such over the past week. The subject was ‘jealous people’. My stance was that jealousy breeds hatred. And my insistence on the statement I made was that jealousy and hate are born out of fear.

As humans, many of us fear the unknown...an unknown religion, an unknown person... an unfamiliar environment...you get the picture? For people to hate there has to be a reason. You don’t just get up one morning and say I hate Mr So-and-so unless you have a reason. Whether it is jealousy, fear, or some other negative emotion, the end result is more often...hate. We all experience feelings of jealousy and, trust me, I have had my moments of jealous with limitations of course. It tends to go too far sometimes. What is jealousy? According to me jealousy is a complex, encompassing feeling that ranges from fear of abandonment to rage to humiliation. Jealousy

strikes both men and women when they perceive a third-party threat to a valued relationship, distinguishing it from envy, which involves a desire for something someone else has. Once you become jealous of someone, you become envious. You don’t like that they have/do/whatever that you want to have/do. I mean, you deserve it so much more, don’t you? They don’t deserve it at all. You hate them for that. You don’t know a celebrity, and yet you see them wearing the outfit you wish you could afford, one you’ll never touch in your lifetime. You do not know me from a bar of soap yet you decide to rubbish my good name all in the name of envy. That’s stupid

jealousy. I might not be a well learned fellow that is good at dishing out advices but let me give you one today. You can turn jealousy and envy into something positive and, in order to do that, you first have to recognise and admit to yourself that you‘re “hating” on a person, and your “hatred” stems from jealousy and envy. What that person has is something they have achieved that you want, and you need to look at it as a personal goal for you to achieve. Once you recognise that, look to that person as a role model… someone you can learn from. Don’t you think? Lerato...

EPWP’s employment a ploy for votes?

Lazarus Dithagiso

SEBOKENG. - “The time has come for total transparency around the issues of the Extended Works Public Programme (EPWP) in the region,” said Patrick Sindane Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), member of the Gauteng Provincial Legislature (MPL). Speaking about the recent protests ahead of the ANC regional conference, Sindane said the Sedibeng District Municipality Executive Mayor Simon Mofokeng and his secretary, Bob Mthembu, are using the poverty experienced by poor people to prove who is more powerful than the other. “The two leaders are playing with the minds of the unemployed. If they need votes, they lobby by employing people through EPWP,” Sindane says, adding that EFF is watching every single step of the ruling government. Sindane says that, according to the well place sources within the regional ANC all vacancies were supposed to be frozen until after the ANC regional conference, but the pair (Mofokeng and Mthembu) are employing people to get votes. “We will engage the EFF regional structures to give this matter the serious at-

tention it deserves. As much as we do not have issues with the EPWP as a programme, we cannot simply turn a blind eye. Millions are channeled into this programmes every year and this is our money and we will demand answers. I have been challenging officials in Emfuleni Local Municipality around this,” he said. Lebo Saul (34) a recently elected regional chairperson of the EFF, said they want to build a strong foundation with good structures equivalent to the ones South Africans built when they liberated themselves.“I took over with the aim of strengthening the branches. Our target is to take control of the wards ahead of the local elections. We want to take the wards in the hands of the ANC. It is a matter of time for us to take control. Our target is to reach 105%. One Gauteng, one region, one EFF,” said the former regional coordinator. Themba Ndaba, the ANC Sedibeng spokesperson said that the ANC has nothing to do with EPWP programmes as they are the responsibility of the government and they are following leads on the protests. The ANC would like the EFF to come forward with any information that might help their investigation into the matter.

Protect refugees and migrants: Amnesty International Lerato Serero

SEDIBENG.- Amnesty International has called on authorities to take systematic measures of prevention and protection of the rights of refugees and migrants in this country following the recent looting of foreign businesses. Refugees, migrants and their small businesses continue to be the targets of attacks resulting from failed policing across the country, Amnesty International said. In the most recent attacks, refugees and migrants

have been targeted in places such as Soweto, in different locations in the West Rand, Sebokeng and Vereeniging, with tensions high in Mamelodi and Sasolburg. Scores of people (foreigners) have been displaced, had their livelihoods destroyed and are currently without shelter. “Amnesty International has repeatedly called on authorities to take systematic measures of prevention and protection of the rights of refugees and migrants. They must launch pro-

per investigations and identify the individuals and groups behind these crimes and bring them to book,” said Muleya Mwananyanda, Amnesty International’s Deputy Director for Southern Africa. Longstanding impunity for perpetrators of attacks continues to fuel further violence. Government officials and the leadership of political parties are failing to speak out clearly and decisively to condemn this pattern of violence against socially vulnerable individuals.

In addition, the police continue to lack effective leadership in terms of their responsibility to prevent and respond to such attacks. Amnesty International is also calling on humanitarian agencies, municipalities, Disaster Management and other appropriate organizations to respond urgently to assist those affected by the violence and to ensure contingency plans are in place in the case of future incidents

Putting your best financial foot first - money tips for young adults SEDIBENG- Good financial habits are not taught at school and young adults are often only exposed to the world of managing their own money when they get a part time student job, or their first full time job. However, just because they are young, it doesn’t mean that young adults shouldn’t take full responsibility for their finances. “Taking responsibility for your finances as a young adult will create a lifetime of good habits,” says Eunice Sibiya, Head of Consumer Education at FNB. “You are now an adult, and although some may still have parents as a financial support, you need to understand that it is your responsibility to manage your own finances,” says Sibiya. Make an effort to read everything that you can on personal finances, talk to someone you admire in business of where they started out and how they manage their finances and generally become knowledgeable. No one else can do it for you. Keep record of what is coming in and out One of the most important aspects of financial management is understanding how much money comes in and how much you spend. “Take note of all the money that you earn whether it is extra money baby-sitting in your spare time or a salary from your first full time job,” says Sibiya. “Be aware that even small, seeming insignificant expenses such as buying a coffee or a takeaway add up.” Once you understand what you spend your money on, draw up a budget, which is a simple way of keeping track of what you spend each month. “Budgeting and keeping a record of money in and out is arguably one of the most important skills you will learn when managing your finances,” says Sibiya. Don’t be tempted into debt Some young adults will have student loans, which is a ‘good’ type of debt as it should increase your earning power later on. However, avoid any temptation to take out credit cards and store cards to buy unnecessary luxuries. “Think about what you buy very carefully. Will you really remember the expensive clothes or things you had in your early 20s? Highly unlikely. So don’t be tempted to take on debt to buy expensive clothes or luxuries,” warns Sibiya. “You may think you need to keep up with your new work colleagues or your friends at university, but it is not worth it. There will always be a new outfit or items out there, but the money you earn is precious, use it wisely and later on in your life, you will have had a big financial head start.” Be inventive with your money You are young. Take chances and be inventive with the money you have. “Not everything has to cost you your hard earned cash,” says Sibiya. “When you are young, everything is new and exciting and you have the luxury of exploring the world around you and being inventive.” Some of the experiences you have may cost nothing, such as picnics in the park instead of going out for dinners with friends, staying with family and friends when travelling or learning a skill such as cutting your own hair or doing your own nails. “It is sometimes more fun and memorable to have an experience that you didn’t just hand over cash for, but had to work out and accomplish,” says Sibiya. Start saving now “As soon as you earn any income, no matter how small, it is imperative you learn the habit of putting some of it away,” says Sibiya. “Don’t be fooled into thinking that you have your whole life to earn money, so there is no reason to save now.” Set goals for yourself and put away money for a long term goal, such as furthering your studies, buying a house, a plane ticket to a dream destination as well as putting away money that you are never allowed to touch. “At the end of the day your financial situation comes down to what you have saved and what money you have, not what you spent, so the sooner you save, the better off you will be,. The most important ally you have is time, which provides you with a longer investment horizon,” concludes Sibiya.

VANDERBIJLPARK. - Hard work and dedication paid dividends during the Sedibeng cluster National Teacher Awards on Friday. Directors for education in Sedibeng West, Victor Theta and Dorah Moloi of Sedibeng East awarded some of the best performing educators. The function was hosted at the Quest Conference Centre in Vanderbijlpark. In her keynote address, Moloi acknowledged the best educators for lifting high into the horizon the flag of Sedibeng. She said the year 2015 is a year of radical transformation where every grade will matter. The honours were given to men and women for true service, for demonstrating this by focusing and making a difference in the quality of life of the children who are potential future national assets. The achievements are a positive stride in the education system. “It is not everybody who gets the awards and by doing nothing except by shedding sweat to

earn them. “It is a treasure for a person who works in a zone of distinction, consumed by continuous improvement who is innovative and does not settle for less,” said Moloi. She adds that the Department is faced with great challenges as the Grade 9 performance is very poor nationally, she said. The tendency is to treat senior phase as a resting phase while focusing more on the performance of Grade 12. “The implication is that if we do not get education right, we stand the risk of inheriting the unfortunate triple challenges of unemployment, poverty and inequality. “You are not regarded as only role model but as ‘Change Agents’ who should forever be extra-vigilant to the possible impact of curriculum transition,’ he said to recipients. Theta said he was pleased with the performance shown by the educators: “Today your hard work performance has paid dividends. “Keep up the good work and make your region proud.”

Install lights at the school Lerato Serero

SEDIBENG. The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Gauteng recently called on the Emfuleni Local Municipality to switch the lights on at Evaton West Primary School. A year after the school opened its doors in January 2014, staff and learners have returned to a school with no electricity. Kingsol Chabalala the DA MPL says that when the school first opened, it was not connected to the local power grid. Solar panels were provided as a temporary solution, but these were stolen in March last 2014, and that repeated calls for assistance from the municipality fell on deaf ears.

“It is of deep concern that the municipality leaves important institutions like schools without any electricity for so long. Ensuring the school is fully functional with electricity is a basic requirement and should be attended to urgently. This makes teachers’ jobs very difficult as it restricts them from conducting any online research and having to print work at internet cafes. Not only does this place an unnecessary burden on teachers, it could also cause delays in covering the school curriculum,” he says adding that valuable technological resources play a critical role in ensuring that teachers are able to provide supplementary learning material to

their learners. With Gauteng moving towards so-called paperless classrooms, it is critical that connectivity is available at all schools. Chabalala says that the DA will submit written questions to Cooperative Governance MEC Jacob Mamabolo asking when electricity will be installed, whether security measures will be put in place to protect school property, and whether the Emfuleni municipal manager will be held to account for failing to address the problem. DA MPL Kingsol Chabalala calls on the ELM to switch the lights on at Evaton West Primary School.

Drugs kill, don’t mess with them Mduduzi Mathebula

VEREENIGING.- Warrant Officer OuJan Mohoboko and Constable Masefako Ntlele together with Alpha Trauma Centre visited one of the popular Sedibeng regional High schools General Smuts, on Friday with a purpose to teach learners about drug and substance abuse. The purpose of the day was to educate young pupils that are in Grades 9 and 10 about the dangers of using drugs and being used to sell them. Vereeniging SAPS’ Captain Fikile

Funda says the two officers had a mandate to reach out to schools and educate learners on substance abuse and peer pressure. “It’s clear at all schools when new learners arrive they become victims. They are used by those who sell drugs or dealers,” says Funda. The Alpha Trauma Centre team and the Vereeniging police had a serious talk with the learners and interacted with them. VUT News WELCOME TO VUT

VUT REGISTRATION 2015 RUNS SMOOTHLY

The Vice-Chancellor and Principal of the Vaal University of Technology, Professor Irene Moutlana extends a hearty welcome to all our students for the 2015 academic year.

Khanyisa Peter & Nontobeko Zondi

Despite soaring temperatures averaging 30 degrees in the southern tip of Gauteng, prospective students queued for hours to ensure that they realised their dream of registering for entry to a tertiary institution. The long queues in and around the university were a pleasing indication of how important tertiary education is to the younger generation.

“On behalf of the Council of the University, management and staff, we thank you for choosing VUT and trust that you will achieve success in your tertiary education. As you commit to your studies, we as a university of technology, pledge to offer you top-notch, state-of-the-art and robust teaching and learning facilities that should provide you with a conducive and scholarly environment. We trust that you will realise your ambitions to graduate as quickly as possible and to plough back into society, community and country. Students coming from 32 international destinations should enrich your campus and academic life through the vast diversity that they bring into our institution. We have collaborations with well over 20 international universities giving our students and staff many opportunities to study and do research abroad. Our relations with local industry are also very important to ensure that our graduates can enjoy work-integrated learning prior to the completion of their qualifications.

The university has seen many prospective students from around the country as well as from 20 international universities.

Prospective students came out in numbers for admission

GREAT ACHIEVEMENTS ARE CELEBRATED

We encourage you to take advantage of all the opportunities in the classroom and on the sporting fields to enhance and empower yourself whilst at the Vaal University of Technology. As we celebrate 50 years of academic excellence in 2016, we look forward to your contribution in honouring this milestone with exciting festivities planned for the next two years. Our institution has world-class facilities for teaching, learning, research and community engagement. We have four faculties that produce top-quality, employable and entrepreneurial graduates in Applied and Computer Sciences, Engineering and Technology, Management and Human Sciences. We are also proud of our Science and Technology Park, based in Sebokeng, which brings together industry and researchers to develop new technology platforms, products and solutions. Our students excel in most of the sport genres offered at our campus. The university has top quality athletes in soccer, cricket, rugby, netball, hockey and baseball. The rich heritage of the region and the presence of metal, steel, engineering and telecommunications companies provide ample opportunities for our graduates to become well-rounded and fullyfledged citizens of the world. Our motto – “Your world to a better future” – attests to the opportunities that our institution provides. I welcome you to your future! Prof I N Moutlana Vice-Chancellor and Principal

VUT academic staff members were stationed at all registration areas to ensure a smooth process. The university also improved security around campus to minimise disruptions during this busy period.

He kept posing one question to the guests present: “If I could do it, what stops you from doing it?” He encouraged parents to continue supporting their children and also to improve their own education. Mr Tsepo Monaledi, Chairman: Bold Moves 771 Board, highlighted the objective of the programme which it is to produce distinctions. He has started a campaign calling KWS “Home of Distinctions” and asked learners to live up to it. He expressed his gratitude to Ms Kediemetse Mokotsi, Director Marketing and Public Relations at VUT, for driving the KWS project at the university to the benefit of the Sedibeng and Fezile Dabi district municipalities.

Matric 2014 award recipients, VUT management, De Beers representatives and parents

Nontobeko Zondi

VUT and the De Beers Group of Companies joined forces to host a joyous event to celebrate the achievements of learners on Saturday, 17 January 2015 at the Vaal University of Technology, Vanderbijlpark Campus. The purpose of the awards ceremony was to encourage and show gratitude to the matric class of 2014 that have done exceptionally well. The event also awarded Grade 10 and 11 learners who achieved excellent grades. This great achievement is largely thanks to the Khula Weekend School (KWS) programme that was introduced by De Beers at VUT. The programme was launched

on the 26th March 2012 and aimed to assist and nurture the Grade 10, 11 and 12 learners in improving their marks. Learners are assisted in the following subjects: Mathematics, Physical Sciences, Accounting, Economics, English and Life Sciences. Previous beneficiaries of KWS were also invited to be part of the event and to share their varsity experiences with the award recipients so they know what to expect and how to behave on campus. Professor Kutzvinesta Dzvimbo, Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Academic & Research at VUT, shared his life experiences with the learners and encouraged them to remain determined and focused in order to achieve their dreams.

www.vut.ac.za

The speakers shared the same motivational words with learners: focus, choice, show determination, have a vision and a dream. Each recipient received R10 000 while the top learner received R20 000 from Nedbank. The matric class 2014 winners were: First – Mohlokoane Collen Titus Katlego (Mathematics) Second – Lekgetho Neo (Mathematics, Life Sciences and Physics) Third – Mokoena Ntsoaki (Mathematics and Life Sciences) Fourth – Phadi Moleboheng (Accounting) Fifth – Maluka Lerato (Life Sciences) Mr Mohlokoane was also the overall top achiever in Mathematics amongst all the matric learners who were part of KWS in the three centres; VUT, University of Johannesburg and University of Limpopo.

Only football careers suffer

Annual General Meeting. However, this seems to be impossible. TOUCHLINE has learned that some teams will travel to Johannesburg to play tournaments and friendly matches to keep their youngsters busy while waiting for the league to start. Sedibeng should be ashamed. As things stand now they are destroying the future of these youngsters. To make things worse, some teams have been training week-in-and-week-out, but with no competitive games. Some youngsters have lost hope as far as their football careers are concerned. As they say “when two bulls fight, the thing that suffers most is the grass”. The same can be said of development football in this region. As a region, we are not progressing as far as football is concerned and stadiums are empty on weekends because there are no junior programmes, except SAB League which

for the past five years has failed to produce differences while football playing. Then if football is no longer a priority in this region, a second league team. This shows the poor state of coaching in how about opening some kind of academy to this region due to the fact that development help youngsters with their studies after coaches have completely lost their focus and school and at the weekend? Speaking from concentrate on administration matters. TOU- TOUCHLINE….. CHLINE will advise all those who are involved in football to be careful because this region sooner or later will lose poten2 Leslie St, Cnr De Villiers, Vereeniging, Tel 016 422 8764, 016 422 8767 tial footballers and administrators. Coaching is all about technical matters, NOT administration matters, and this country would go far if development coaches in this region understood the difference between the two. With the Promotion League set to kick off after the Emfuleni Local Football Association annual general meeting – there are high possibilities that the development programme is to be affected once again. TOUCHLINE is afraid that Safa Sedibeng might not participate in this year’s Future Champions if the administration issues aren’t sorted out in time. This means there will be no programme including juniors until the elections. However, the question is: what will these youngsters be doing while waiting for those with power or egos to decide when football should be played. TOUCHLINE has never seen this before – where football programmes are stopped just because of administration issues. The only active programme is of the “skop and jaag” SAB League. Boxing workshop for officials Zacharia Nale

VANDERBIJLPARK. - The Sedibeng Boxing Association in conjunction with Emfuleni Local Municipality Sports and Recreation will conduct a Refresher Boxing Workshop at the Olympians Boxing Club on Saturday. The day’s programme starts at 9:00. This was revealed to Sedibeng Ster Sport by ELM Sports and Recreation Department organiser Thanduxolo Madikizela who advised all boxing administrators and coaches to attend. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sport, Madikizela says the workshop is aimed at empowering local boxing administrators and coaches to take the sport to another level. He believes there is a serious need to empower those who are involved in this sport since boxing is one of the biggest sporting codes not only in this county but in the world.

According Madikizela everyone is welcome to attend the workshop. “It is very important to educate everyone who is involved with the sport because boxing is very a complicated sport to understand. “It is a contact sport and we must minimise harm by educating all who are involved. “But having said this, it is an exciting sport to be associated with or to play,” he says. Madikizela says some of the things they will be addressing during the workshop include marketing and promoting the sport. He believes enough attempts must be made to market boxing in this region. In the past, boxing was popular in Sedibeng when the Vaal produced big names such as Carlton “Swing Carlie” Monnakgotla, Baby Lux Khambule, Shamba Mthimkhulu with great promoters such as Bennet “Big Ben” Moeketsi to mention but few.
