SEBOKENG. - A family dispute ended in a house gutted by fire in Sebokeng, Zone 7 last week. An argument between a mother and son erupted over a cousin who is allegedly a drug addict. Apparently the son, Ernest, accused his mother, Selinah Mashiqa (75), of standing up for the alleged drug addict who had turned their lives into a living hell. “Ernest fumed that I was protecting his cousin and the family was dismantled. My son and his cousin started to quarrel and he promised to kill his
cousin since he was a useless addict. I asked him to kill us all because he is also old and does nothing. Then the argument flew out of control. He promised to do something unforgivable,” says Mashiqa. On Tuesday night the neighbours were called for assistance because the entire family was trapped in the house, which was on fire. Apparently the son wanted to burn the entire family and the house. The family managed to escape the fire but the house was reduced to ashes. A bystander says, “This family has been in disarray for a long time and they have
been fighting constantly. We are not surprised by the end result but we are glad no-one was injured. We tried to help out as much as we could to stop the fire and move people out of the house.” Ward Councillor Lahliwe Rapapadi says she has heard a report about the family and that it’s painful for the family to resolve their dispute in such a manner: “We are trying to find a mutually satisfying solution to the matter to solve the family dispute.” The family is pleading for community assistance to rebuild their lives.

Candle left alight, house burns Mduduzi Mathebula
UNITASPARK. -The Lewane family house was burned to cinders, leaving a whole family in disarray. This was after a mentally ill woman apparently forgot to extinguish a candle during her customary prayer on Saturday night. Victim Nombulelo Lewane was trapped in the flaming house, screaming for help. It was alleged that she had lost the key. “I was scared for her life. She lost the key and I couldn’t break into the house. The fire was blazing intensely. All I could do was also scream for help.” These were the words of Nombulelo’s younger brother Vuyisile Lewane. Finally, Nombulelo was rescued from the flaming house. Family and neighbours could not do much to stop the fire as damage was done. Vuyisile says there were no injuries to her sister though she was treated for trauma. “We are glad she’s still alive. I thought she was going to die. I would not forgive myself if anything happened to my sister. I’m still in shock,” said Vuyisile.
The younger brother further asked for community assistance since there was noone else as only the two of them are left in the family. “Our parents have long passed on. I am left with my sister who is mentally challenged,” says the devastated Vuyisile. Any sort of help the community can bring will be gladly received.

No overtime, no Fire & Rescue services Lazarus Dithagiso
VANDERBIJLPARK. - There will - as has become a norm - be no service from the Emfuleni municipal Emergency Fire and Rescue from 16:00 to 18:00 and from 04:00 - 06:00. The two or three periods without essential services that have prevailed for two months are set to continue indefinitely. Employees are using a strategy of ‘no pay, no work.’ This began over non-payment over time and still prevails with Emfuleni Local Municipality, ELM. In cases of major emergency, ELM has approached and appealed to the Democratic Lehlohonolo Phahlane, Manager of Labour Relations at Emfuleni Local Municipality says the two unions are still at loggerheads with their employer.
Alliance-led Midvaal Local Municipality and ArcelorMittal to step in. Dirk Marais, acting deputy chief of Emergency, Administration and Logistics in Emfuleni, agreed that they have been unable to provide full service due to workers not willing to work overtime without pay. This has affected the smooth operation of Services. However, Marais said contingency measures have been put in place. “We have reached a verbal agreement with both Midvaal Municipality and a major steel company to come to our rescue while we are experiencing this predicament,” he says. Two houses were reported to have caught fire during the period when services were rendered by Emfuleni. The community of Hlalase section in Graceland near the Golden Highway say they have had enough of the long wait for develop ment.
Tick tick, community wants to barricade Golden Highway
EVATON. - The communities of Hlalase informal settlement section near Graceland say time is ticking fast without any development. Soon they would find themselves sitting in the middle of the Golden Highway. The families, whose adrenalin has started pumping very fast, say they have occupied the empty space for more than three years. The land is full of big rocks, surrounded by trees, has no electricity, water or toilets and has never been developed. Most of the residents asked to remain anonymous for fear of losing thousands of rands they paid. They say their hope is in the hands of the Emfuleni Local Municipality, ELM. Hlalase is situated a few metres away from the Golden Highway. The communities say they have lost hope in the Evaton West Siyanqoba Community Development Centre led by Jacob Mhlambi, chief director and Morena Mokwena, chairperson. In desperate fear that they would be left behind, they said: “What we want now is for ELM to come up with proper development.” According to documents in the hands of Sedibeng Ster, people conceded that they had paid for services that never materialised. They were allegedly promised that water and sanitation
would be rendered by Emfuleni. The sales agreement document signed by Mokwena as management two years ago indicates that Siyanqoba Centre operates as an Agent for selling the residential sites for OCWEN Investments 85 (Pty) Ltd, Reg No: 2000/018836/07. Terms and condition are that an administration fee is required and non-refundable. Some of the families said they paid up to R10 000 cash for registration, paperwork and installation of a sewerage system. The monies were apparently paid at the office of Siyanqoba Centre and to someone known as Jeff in the ATM at Evaton Mall. The families said they have built houses according to the stands numbered on the map. There are people who purchased double stands: “What we are waiting for is for the municipality to install what has been promised.” Bius Ntombela an alleged Emfuleni Local Municipality worker apparently promised the community to inform Metsi-a-Lekoa to install water pipes. This comes after one of the stand-owners complained that all the informal residents collect water from her tap. A makeshift tap has been installed about five houses away from hers. There are no proper roads. “The hopes of the community were raised immediately after Metsi-a-Lek-
oa workers arrived for inspection,” they said. A reliable, well place source at the municipality said the area was left undeveloped because of the big rocks. The contractor said there’s no way the community could occupy such dolomitic area. The area is too expensive or difficult for a bulldozer to push those big rocks. “Siyanqoba Centre has been blamed for identifying the land without consultation with the government,” said sources. Emfuleni Local Municipality spokespersonStanley Gaba said no one owns the land of the government: “People must stop paying. The next thing is that they demand answers from the government.” He promised to visit the area with the mentioned managers of the Centre.

MEYERTON. - A suspect at large since his alleged rape of a foreign male teenager (19) recently handed himself over to Police. Police spokesperson Constable Maria Mazibuko said a case of FCS (Family Violence, Crimes against Women and Children, and Sexual Offences) was opened as per investigation. The victim told Police how he was brought into the country with the assistance of the suspect. They went to a house the suspect claimed was his. The two went into it and he was told to strip off his clothes. Then he was raped. After the ordeal, the suspect let him go, he alleged. The victim - through the assistance of people from his country - went to open a case at the nearest police station. According to Constable Mazibuko, while Police and relatives of the victim were searching for the suspect, the man handed himself over to Police. The matter is still being investigated, she said. Police could not elaborate on whether the suspect handed himself over through his lawyer, as was alleged. Captain Shado Mashobane said the case is still under investigation by the Provincial FCS Task Team. The Court is waiting to get an interpreter of the suspect’s language so it can proceed with a hearing. Once the Court receives the services of an interpreter of the suspect’s language, the case can proceed. Currently there are no new developments regarding the matter, he said.

Gogo Maboe has lived a century Mduduzi Mathebula
EVATON. - Elinah Maboe is one of the few to clinch the milestone age of a century. Ward 43 members and the Lawrence Khekhe Foundation embarked on a surprise party for the old lady on Saturday. The party was graced by numerous companies such as Morolong Catering, Evagold Shopping Centre, Tony, YD20 and Dingizulu Company. The primary reason for the party was to recognise the old woman (100) and receive blessings from her. These were the words of the community. Maboe said she has shown them love since they knew her. She is a household name in the Free Utopian Church. Apparently she had one child who then gave birth to two souls. The two multiplied to produce eight great-grandchildren. “She always wanted her family next to her. We have a small family but we
make a point of enjoying as much time with her as possible. She’s our pillar of strength. She has brought light into our lives by directing us to Jesus,” says great-grandchild Dikobe Maboe. The surprise party was also graced by Emfuleni Local Municipality speaker Msebenzi Gqoloshe who was the brainchild of Ward 43 participation. Khekhe says it’s an honour to have worked on an event that celebrates the life of an old woman who has reached such an age. “I’m very happy and honoured to be part of this event and to have contributed to Elinah Maboe clinches 100 years of life. RUST-TER-VAAL. - Once again the Rust-ter-Vaal community mourns the killing of yet another soccer player – Joseph De Souza (23) - shot dead on Sunday. This Rust-ter-Vaal Blues FC striker was shot at a social gathering at the Rust-ter-Vaal Community Hall while having fun with his family and friends. He was rushed to Sebokeng Hospital, but died after an 11thhour operation. According to his coach Reginald van der Merwe, the problem started when the deceased and his friends asked the alleged killer to turn down the music in his car, which was disrupting the occasion. It is alleged that the killer rushed to his home, then returned to shoot De Souza twice in the stomach. He also shot another boy - Claude Hammond who is still recovering at Sebokeng Hospital. Unconfirmed rumour has it that the
suspect has since handed himself over to Police. “The family is devastated because they did not expect this to happen to their son as he was having fun with his friend and some family members. The boy was passionate about his soccer career and this is a great loss to the Rust-ter-Vaal community . He will be sadly missed for his personality,” says heartbroken Van der Merwe. De Souza will be buried this Saturday at the Rust-ter-Vaal Cemetery and the funeral service will be held at the Catholic Church at 09:00. Meanwhile Rust-ter-Vaal Blues has organised a memorial service for this promising youngster to be held at the Rust-ter-Vaal Community Hall on Thursday at15:00.

Police probe burning deaths of children Lazarus Dithagiso
ZAMDELA. - Mosime Montoe (37) and his daughter Bonolo Montoe (8) survived serious burn wounds. They are still in the intensive care unit at the Pelonomi Hospital in Bloemfontein. The other two daughters Mpho (14) and Tshepang (4) died inside a burning house. The incident happened at Walter Sisulu Section in Zamdela recently. The fact that the two children were found in the burned-out ruin with both hands and legs bound has raised red flags. Police spokesperson Sergeant Sellwane Mapamela said Police received a call about a burning house at about 17:45. The father was found lying on the grass with one daughter while his other two daughters died in the blaze. The surviving father and daughter were rushed to Metsimaholo District Hospital before being transported to Pelonomi District Hospital in Bloemfontein. Police and Fire services extinguished the fire before they went in. They came across the body of 4-yearold daughter Tshepang Montoe in the dining room, and 14-year-old - Mpho Montoe - in the wardrobe. Both were dead. Their hands had been bound and both had been gagged. Their mourning mother Dorah Zolane Monare (32) said she was not home when the incident happened. After she received a called, she rushed to the house: ‘I have received so much mixed information from the neighbours regarding the burning of the house. Currently, I am waiting for Bonolo who is in ICU to recover. Maybe she will be able to unfold the story.’ Police have opened a case of murder and arson, said Sergeant Mapamela. Nobody has been arrested or charged in connection with the case. Police are waiting for the father to recover and be released from hospital to obtain more information. Apparently the condition of the child in hospital is not satisfactory. Rumours making rounds point at the father. It has been alleged that the mother left the house. One of the couple allegedly suspects the other of cheating.

Till we meet again get there. And yet death is the destination we all share. No one has ever escaped it. And that is as it should be, because Death is very likely the single best invention of Life. It is Life’s change agent. It clears out the old to make way for the new. It is not how much you know about life but how you live your life that counts. Those who can avoid mistakes by observing the mistakes of others are most apt to keep free from sorrow. In a world full of uncertainties, the record of what has gone before - human experience - is as sure and reliable as anyt-
hing of which we know. To live means to experience through doing, feeling, thinking. Experience takes place in time, so time is the ultimate scarce resource we have. Over the years, the content of experience will determine the quality of life. Therefore one of the most essential decisions any of us can make is about how one’s time is allocated or invested.” Whoever said that loss gets easier with time was a liar. Here’s what really happens: The spaces between the times you miss them
grow longer. Then, when you do remember to miss them again, it’s still with a stabbing pain to the heart. And you have guilt. Guilt because it’s been too long since you missed them last. “As the traveller who has once been from home is wiser than he who has never left his own doorstep, so knowledge of one other culture should sharpen our ability to scrutinize more steadily, to appreciate lovingly, our own.” - Margaret Mead Till we meet again. Three district officials, teachers and principal versus parents Mduduzi Mathebula
The angry parents are being addressed by the school governing body officials.
SEBOKENG. - Three district officials and the district SGB official were unable to calm the angry parents of Lefika Primary schoolchildren last Tuesday morning. Parents took a stand on Tuesday to ‘take the bull by the horns’. The acting school principal and the entire teaching staff were locked out of the school by furious parents. The gate and fence between parents, and teachers and the principal, were the only mediators there to calm the situation down as verbal wrestling ensued between the three. It is alleged that the school principal does not hear or respect the views of parents. Parents claim that the acting principal is rude and treats them like illiterates. Some parents claim there are a number of cases they personally reported to the District officer that have gone unattended. They dispute the manner in which the Student Governing Body (SGB) is run.
Learners and community join in Mafatsane Wetland facelift drive drink is safe for consumption,” Mogotsi elaborated when asked about her enquiring mind and obsession with water discussions. The Department of Agriculture and Rural Development Veterinary Services Chief director Dr Malcolm De Bude said that this year’s theme is relevant and rightly calls on young people to actively participate in protecting the environment. He stressed that the youth are torch bearers who need to get involved in seeking solutions to the challenges in their locality. The community, armed with gloves and masks, defied the scorching heat and cleaned the area around the wetland. The Ekhuruleni Environmental Management MMC Vuyelwa Mabena called on the community to take care of their surroundings. She said that the community should be the eyes and ears of government and report any challenges timeously to ensure that officials resolve problems before they escalate. Other partners included the Gauteng Wetlands Forum (GWF) and South African National. A board making people aware of the various species dependent on the Mafatsane wetland was unveiled on the day.

EVATON. - Learners from Zitha Primary School together with community members shared the importance of wetlands through song and dance. The youth’s lyrics drove the message home to approximately 500 community members and dignitaries who filled the Mafatsane Community Centre to participate in World Wetland Month activities in their locality. The event was organised by the Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development’s Sustainable Resources Management directorate, in partnership with Emfuleni municipality. Twelve-year-old Neo Mogotsi filled her goody bag with giveaway prizes courtesy of the Rand Water Foundation awareness team. Mogotsi outdid her school mates by answering most of the barrage of questions. They were quizzed about wetlands, where the country sources its water and how scientists detect and treat disease-inducing water organisms. “I am concerned that if people continue to resist paying for the water they use, government may not afford to buy equipment and chemicals to ensure that the water we
SBG chairperson Morena Mabatoane told Sedibeng Ster there was a case of assault in which a teacher allegedly slapped a child and the parents were fuming for revenge. The district official did not act. “We had about five meetings in a space of two months. We had complaints and claims about the principal. Nothing has been done. I don’t know what they want here because they failed to respond to our grievances,” says the SGB chairperson. While talking to the media, parents locked horns with the school principal who, it is claimed, called one of the parents a ‘rubbish’. There was nocomment from the principal, who would not say a word to the media. The three district officials said they also had nothing to say to the media, and parents asked them to leave the premises. Mabotoane says they are waiting for the right and relevant person from the District to ‘address us as parents and not as animals’.

We have to give by means of planting with open hearts. The ministry focuses not only at the Mall. There are other needy areas. The Bibles are donated as part of the compass of life: for guidance. God is love. The Bibles help access the words of God and to understand His ways. Due toe heavy rain, Pastor Latha said they could not distribute clothes. The gospel artists could also not perform: “We will reserve the clothes for the next occasion,” Said Latha.
SASOLBURG. - To enhance a system of successful education in schools, community members, different government departments, churches, societies, businesses, NGO stakeholders interested in education, are encouraged to avail themselves during the School Governing Body (SGB) elections. The venture should be an enormous success as envisaged by the Department of Education. Parents or guardians expect their schools to get information pertaining to the latter. Amongst other details they will get election schedules. Dr Moeletsi said Fezile Dabi District is currently engaged in a campaign to sensitise different communities to give this imperative their wholehearted, unwavering support. He adds that a period for an elected SGB member is three years. This is according to the South African Schools Act, 1996 Act 84 of 1996 (SASA). The election schedule includes teachers,
non educationists and learners. The school election committee will work together in collaboration with school principals who will serve as school electoral officers of a school to which they areattached. The schools are requested to work in harmony with stakeholders to achieve objectives without hiccups. Notwithstanding problems that might hinder progress, Dr Moeletsi said he hopes the forthcoming SGB election will sail smoothly without serious impediments.

First Principals Forum meeting held
MEYERTON. - Midvaal Local Municipal Mayor Bongani Baloyi recently hosted the first Principal’s Forum for the current year. The agenda was one packed with new projects to be launched in Midvaal. On the day, Baloyi launched a Career Guidance Programme aimed at all Midvaal schools, including a career day that will take place later in the year. This programme will help learners with access to information on possible fields of study. In addition, Baloyi launched a food gardens project, where the municipality will work together with schools to encourage a passion for
agriculture amongst school children, and to teach them that they can and should grow their own vegetables, even at home. The third project discussed was a learner profiling system, through which the challenges of learners in each school can be understood, so that teachers and tutors can assist to remedy their problems from a young age. Midvaal’s MMC for Social Services, Rob Jones, says, “Because most of the education function sits at District and provincial level, rather than at local municipality level, local government tends to become distant from schools in the area. This Forum allows us to
stay in touch with what is going on in our schools, and to assist wherever possible, even if it’s just to engage with District on behalf of our schools.” Jones believes that the Forum is important for showing support to schools. The principals in attendance were excited about the projects being launched, and about the Principals Forum in general stating that it is rare to see a Mayor engage with schools at that level. Any Midvaal principals who did not attend the meeting but would like more information on the projects, is welcome to contact the Mayor’s office on 016 360 7418.

Mojalathuto Primary School learners’ dedication paid off after they won first prize at the CollectaCan National Schools Competition.
EVATON. - Mojalathuto Primary School in Evaton last year won first prize (R25000) after teaching more than 753 learners to take care of the environment. Mojala-Thuto managed to collect 183 040 cans in total over the course of the year, winning themselves first prize in Category One. This was through the Collect-a-Can National Schools Competition which sees school children collecting as many cans as possible to clean the environmet and to ensure that their school comes out on top. This year’s Collect-a-Can National Schools Competition kicked off on Sunday, February 1, providing schools with an exciting opportunity to raise additional funds for their schools. “The National Schools Competition provides the perfect opportunity for schools to raise funds while teaching learners about the importance of a clean environment,” says current project organiser at Mojala-Thuto Primary School, Gerald Likhama.
Zimasa Velaphi, public relations and marketing manager at Collect-a-Can, says, “Mojalo-Thuto Primary is truly an example to all other schools to participate in this competition. Just by collecting cans, any school can generate an extra income or win big prizes while teaching the learners about a clean, green and healthy environment.” Velaphi adds that money won from this competition can help schools achieve various things. “This year, Mojala-Thuto would like to challenge Qhoweng Primary School (third prize winners and rivals in the region), to show what they are made of and collect even more cans to contribute to protecting the environment – every recycled can counts.” Velaphi concludes. For more information about Collect-a-Can contact the Collect-a-Can head office on 011 466 2939 or visit the website www.collectacan.co.za. Collect-a-Can is also on Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/CollectaCan) and Twitter (http://twitter.com/CollectaCan).
H e’s n ot jjust ust a H eadmaster, h e’s o ur H ero! He’s not Headmaster, he’s our Hero! VEREENIGING. - General Smuts High School has once again shown irrepressible spirit on the grandstands at the annual Vereeniging/Meyerton Interhoër athletics meeting where they won both the Best Cheerleaders and Best Team Spirit trophies. They also won the Spirit Trophy at the English Interhigh meeting. As the co-ordinator, Aletha de Klerk said: “The ‘cherry’ of winning was a bonus; the
‘cake’ of enjoying the day was that it was really all about Smuts and you don’t have to wear a cape to be a hero, just wear a Smutsie blazer!” The theme this year was “Heroes”. The 200 spectators’ spirits were buoyed by the love and respect for their very own hero, Mr Ronald Bartie, who has been headmaster of the school since 1995. His outstanding leadership, dedication
and inspiration will be sorely missed after he retires at the end of April this year. The entire performance on the stand was dedicated to him, and there was not a dry eye in the house as the banner bearing his photograph unfurled across the stand to the tune of “You Raise me up” during the opening sequence.

This unemployed single parent-raised youngster, who has three siblings, believes that he is destined for great things but this is hindered by financial support. Last year he could not release his academic results due to this.“I am doing a three-year degree and would like to finish my studies. “I am prepared to do anything for this, hence I am begging for sponsorship from anyone who can help me. I promise I will not disappoint them,” says the young man. Anyone who is willing to help can contact Sedibeng Ster. Jeffery Thabethe is plea ding with the community to help him finish his stu dies. Thanks but NO thanks It is not as if TOUCHLINE ran away from its responsibility, but being part of the Emfuleni Local Football Association executive committee would be like “selling my soul” or compromising my profession. It has been a while now since some officials have been trying to persuade yours truly/TOUCHLI-
NE to be part of the local football leadership structure, but there would be too many complications. TOUCHLINE really appreciates the confidence that local coaches and officials have in me, and it is always my desire to lead football development in this region. Yet I can only serve in committees that provide technical support - not in the executive committee. TOUCHLINE doesn’t have to be in the
executive committee to make a difference in our local football. That doesn’t mean all of us should be part of the executive committee in this region. There must be people who have use for those sub-committees that will be formed after elections. TOUCHLINE can only serve in those sub-committees. Football doesn’t only exist in the boardroom. We also need people who will do the ‘spade-work’, to say the least. As TOU-
CHLINE always says – football is not played in boardroom but on the field. TOUCHLINE’s message to those who really want me to serve in the Emfuleni Local Football Association executive committee is: I will avail myself for those sub-committees. TOUCHLINE also wants to take the opportunity to acknowledge those who showed faith. I feel humbled but NO thanks. Next week same place, same time from TOUCHLINE!!!

MEYERTON. - Aqua Vaal Hengel Club organised one of the biggest Carp Competitions with high `scales’ (handicaps) for members. These were designed to put them on the spot. The trio Banda received gold in the masters, Charl van der Watt gold in the seniors, while Jacques Eigenhuis received silver in the juniors. Banda, a Midvaal senior traffic officer, said he was motivated and roped in by Eigenhuis in October. Having attended two competition catching few fishes, it was a dream come true, said Banda. As predicted - Rakhale a household name! Zacharia Nale
SEBOKENG. - As Sedibeng Ster - formerly Vaal Weekly - predicted ten years ago, Thabo “Jomo” Rakhale has become a household name. This newspaper predicted the future of this dazzling Orlando Pirates midfielder beneath the headline “Destined to become a household name”. This Sebokeng-based sensation mesmerised soccer fans who packed the FNB Stadium to capacity during the Soweto Derby between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates on Saturday. Rakhale came in as a `sub’ and immediately made an impact that much delighted Pirates supporters. He was a swift crowd favourite, to say the least.
Rakhale started his amateur soccer career with the local soccer team Junior Lions FC. His rise to stardom came when he went to Potchefstroom’s North West University to study Sports Science. He established himself as a top footballer while studying. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sport, Rakhale says it was all about hard work to achieve this in a short space of time. Rakhale started his professional debut with Polokwane City before Pirates called him back from a loan spell with the club. Rakhale says education is key to any young person regardless of whether he or she is playing sports or not. “I’m grateful for the support I receive from all the Sedibeng people because if it wasn’t for that support I don’t think I would
be where I am today. First I made sure that I got the best education and after that I focused on my football career,” says Rakhale. Many local soccer fans believe that Rakhale is following in the footsteps of former Orlando Pirates dribbling wizard and home boy Steve ‘Chippa’ Lekoelea, who was also the crowd favourite. He says he is excited to be compared with Lekoelea because he grew up admiring him. He adds, “I get excited when people say I’m following in the footsteps of Chippa because, when I was young, he was my role model and even today I admire him.” Rakhale says his short-term goal is to play for Bafana Bafana. No doubt, with his current performance, the boy deserves a national call up.

Kaizer Chiefs and NWU Vaal team up for unique study VANDERBIJLPARK. - One of the first official Knowledge Generation Projects of the Kaizer Chiefs Innovation Centre will be based on the Vaal Triangle Campus of the North-West University, NWU Vaal. This is a practical research project that will see academics from the Department of Industrial Psychology take to the sporting pavilion in the weeks to come. Researchers will – together with Kaizer Chiefs - investigate factors that contribute towards the levels of motivation of sports fans as well as the development of psychological identification with a particular sports team. According to Ederick Stander, the Subject Chair of Industrial Psychology on the Vaal Triangle Campus, the research is aimed at better understanding the South African sport consumer, especially in the context of much sought-after sporting codes like soccer. “Through this practical research initiative we will be able to provide Kaizer Chiefs executive management with greater insight and data breakdowns of why exactly different groups - within their current fraternity of fans - react to and identify so strongly with the Kaizer Chiefs brand,” explains Stander. Another aim of the research initiative is to better understand fan behaviour to enable the club to further fine-tune their marketing and
engagement strategies. Honours students in the programmes Industrial Psychology, Human Resources and Labour Relations, will also get the opportunity to participate as fieldworkers on the project as part of their ‘practicum’. The latter refers to their Organisational Behaviour module. The first round of the project took place over the weekend when the “Glamour Boys” played their arch rivals Orlando Pirates in the Soweto Derby - one of the most fiercely contested games in world football. The project forms part of the Campus’s mandate to act as a knowledge-resource partner to the club by means of the Kaizer Chiefs Innovation Centre. This centre will officially be opened in May this year. The projects for 2015 include delivery of accredited certificate courses to the Kaizer Chiefs Youth Academy staff, as well as development of ‘Life after Football’ Interventions aimed at the current Kaizer Chiefs players. NWU Vaal and Kaizer Chiefs announced their unique partnership in October 2013 and the partnership sees the University availing its expertise to benefit young talented footballers at the club’s Youth Academy in Johannesburg. The Centre for Continuing Professional Development (CCPD) on the Vaal Triangle Campus will furthermore serve as the point

of contact between the football club and experts across the University. The expertise will be specifically utilised to develop young football players in totality and therefore includes not only playing skills. The NWU will provide consultancy and advice on a wide variety of topics. These include finance, nutrition, psychological preparation for high performance sport and physical conditioning. The footballers will be developed in academic and professional fields in order to prepare them for life after their professional football careers. In addition to the marketing benefits of the association with a world-renowned brand like Kaizer Chiefs, the NWU will strengthen
its third stream income revenue through the implementation of expertise. Another result of the collaboration between Kaizer Chiefs and the University is the Kaizer Chiefs Innovation Centre located on the Vaal Triangle Campus. This centre – a first of its kind within the higher education sphere - will grant staff and students as well as supporters from the local community, the opportunity to experience the total Kaizer Chiefs brand experience. The partnership with Kaizer Chiefs is proof of the NWU’s good reputation as a research institution with an excellent knowledge-base and as an internationally recognised destination for sports development.
SA Para-triathlete places top ten at international event MEYERTON. - On Sunday March 1, South African amputee para-triathlete Stan Andrews competed and placed 9th overall in the 2015 Buffalo City ITU World Paratriathlon Event. The event hosted a total of 39 top male and female international para-triathletes in all five categories. The men’s PT4 category held the fiercest competition with 16 entrants (six of whom were South Africans) of the total 39 entrants taking part in this category. Andrews reported the swim to be tough with a heavy side current that affected all the competitors equally. Entrants were given the opportunity to make use of a ‘pre-transition’, where athletes are able to remove their wetsuits and put on their prostheses in an area near the water. Despite having competed in many other triathlons, the ‘pre-transition’ was a first for Andrews, who felt that it cost him valuable seconds, causing his Transition 1 time to be 30 seconds slower than in previous events. The bike course went well for Andrews, who feels that cycling is his weakest discipline of the triathlon events. The wind played into his hand and helped
his climb back up the express way, leaving him ready to jump into Transition 2 after two loops. The run was challenging for Andrews who, after overtaking fellow South African competitor Nico Nel, was in 10th place 28 seconds behind Spaniard Rafael Solis Torres. Ultimately, Andrews placed 9th out of the field due to the disqualification of a fellow competitor, the reason for which is unknown, and was the first South African to finish. In nine weeks’ time, Andrews will compete in Egypt with the goal of scoring enough points to compete in the Grand Final in Chicago, USA. Stan wishes to thank all those whose contributions made this weekend a success, namely TSA and Buffalo City, as well as Biogen and NoExcuses who contributed to the cost of the trip. * Stan grew up in Meyerton, attended school at Meyerton Primary and then General Smuts High. He now resides in Roodepoort. The Midvaal municipality will be hosting a 5km fun walk on March 21 in Meyerton and the beneficiary of the walk will be StandwithStan,
a non profit organisation he founded in 2013. StandwithStan provides disadvantaged amputees with prosthetics, mentoring and
maintenance-training for the prosthetic in order for the amputee to regain mobility and a higher quality of life.
Here with Stan Andrews (second from right) are some of the athletes who took part in the March 1 event. From left are Irish Matcheke (PT4 15th), Dylan da Silva (PT3), Oswald Kydd (PT2), Stan (PT4 9th) and Nico Nel (PT4 10th).
