Family haunted by ‘vutha’ Pinky Mofokeng

VANDERBIJLPARK. - The Mokejane family in SE 2, Vanderbijlpark believe that they have been cursed. This follows mysterious fires that have been engulfing their homes. Fire engines come and go at this house but nothing seems to help. The fires are said to have begun in May this year when the children’s bedroom started burning without any source. More seemed to follow. The family then moved to a flat where as soon as they settled in, within a week, the whole flat burned down mysteriously. The family then moved to Sharpeville where they thought they would be safe, but the house that they moved into also burned down. They then decided to move back to the house in Vanderbijlpark where they had planned to sleep in outside rooms but these too have been burned down by an inexplicable fire. The family’s 13-year-old son warns them when the fires are about to start as he claims to see three strange creatures with horns burning the house. After revealing this information to the family the young man then faints and cannot speak for hours. With the recent fire, while trying to salvage what remained of their belongings and putting them in black plastic bags, the bags began to burn. Puleng Mokejane, the youngster’s mother says: “This is one difficult situation. I have never seen anything like this in my life. We have been living here for three years. Why is this only happening now? I am very afraid for my son. I accompany him everywhere he goes now because I don’t want anything happening to him.” This month (August) alone they have had to contend with numerous fires and they have been left destitute and plead for help from the members of the community.

The Mokejane family believe they are being haunted by evil spirits and that demons are behind the fire that recently consumed their home in Van derbijlpark’s SE2. Photo: Pinky Mofokeng.

SEBOKENG. - Golden Gardens and Zone 19 RDP houses are a ticking time bomb and some community members have to sleep with one eye open as they do not know when the Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM) will deploy the Red Ants Security Company to evict them. The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) met with some Zone 19 communities from Golden Gardens and nearby areas to discuss land and the threat of possible evictions by ELM. Sedibeng regional EFF representatives from the Gauteng Legislature, Patrick Sindane and Parks Khaiyane, brought hope to residents illegally occupying Zone 19 RDP homes: “There’s no possibility of eviction right now,” they told the meeting on Friday outside the Saul Tsotetsi Sports Centre. Sindane said that, should ELM engage the security company for eviction, Sedibeng will never be the same. “The land belongs to all who live in it. When the government fails to give houses to people, they must open land for those who have money to build their own houses. No one should claim credit that he or she is doing it for Madiba. Zuma will never resemble Madiba. The EFF intends to push out all ‘tsotsi’ councillors who illegally distribute

21st birthday party ends with a bang Pinky Mofokeng

SEBOKENG. - It is wise not to invite yourself to other people’s parties because you could find yourself in a situation beyond your control. A gang leader recently ‘crashed’ and tried to ruin a 21st birthday party organised by a proud mother in Zone 8 Vilakazi Street. She now lives in fear after her son stabbed the man after he attacked her. According to the mother, Nooi Sesesame, everything was running smoothly until a group of uninvited men who were sitting next to a fire not far from her home attempted to burn the party tent. One of the children told her what was happening. She ran out and told the DJ to stop playing the music so that everyone could go home but the uninvited guests objected. She then sent her son to tell them to put out the fire that they had been sitting at. One of the members apparently assaulted him and a struggle ensued. The mother went outside to ask them to leave. They apparently attacked and started assaulting her, injuring her knee in the process. In her defence her son grabbed a bottle

and stabbed the leader who was rushed to Levai Mbatha Clinic in Evaton where he later died. All hell broke loose the next day as the gang now turned on the family. They burned a part of the house and broke all the windows. On Saturday, during funeral proceedings, the gang members took their leader’s coffin, put it in front of the Sesemane family’s gate and fired several gun-shots. They then vandalised the house before they continued to the cemetery to bury the deceased. Sesemane says, “A 21st birthday party that was supposed to have brought joy and happiness to my family instead brought tears and fear. I was just trying to make my son happy. Those uninvited guests ruined everything.” The family has been living in fear and sleeping at family members’ houses because the gangsters have promised that they would be back. Nooi Sesemane and her family are living in fear after gangsters vandalised and burned her home recently, demanding her son’s li fe after he allegedly stabbed and killed their leader in her defence. SEBOKENG. - With the theme ‘Woman of Virtue-Mosadi ya Kgabane’, Devine Glory Ministries in Zone 3 over the weekend held the mother of celebrations. The objective was to give recognition to the women of the region as a whole. The theme of the day was ‘woman to woman inspiration’ as some women, especially those who are older, shared their different journeys with young girls who are still growing up. The celebration swung into gear with various performances such as drama, dances and testimonials from women about what they had experienced in their lives. The main speaker Mafusi Motsapi said, “As women, we must have an untainted faith in God. If it was not for my faith, I would not have made it through the trials and tribulations I have had to face in my life as a woman.” Pastor Fanyana Banda stated that the role of women in our society is a very important one. If the much preached about Metropolitan City is something that must be taken seriously then municipal officials need to pull up their socks. 2016 (municipal elections) is not that far and my only hope is that the powers that be in this region have learnt from a recent municipal audit report that jobs for pals without qualifications and jobs

Incompetent municipal officials for comrades must become a thing of the past. The recent poor municipal audit outcomes, service delivery failures, high demand for consultants and support from national and provincial governments demonstrate that persons appointed in key positions at municipalities do not have the required competencies. In the report Auditor General Kimi Makwetu makes mention that there are two root causes for failure in municipalities. Personnel who do not have the required competencies are appointed in key positions and current employees do not keep up with the changing local government environment through on-going training

and development. The report states that senior managers at 134 municipalities and finance officials at 145 municipalities did not meet requirements by June 30, 2013. The minimum competency levels of accounting officers, CFOs, senior managers, SCM officials and other officials were introduced and prescribed by the municipal regulations on minimum competency levels issued by the national treasury. By June 2013, 30 municipal managers, three CEOs, 32 CFOs and 39 heads of SCM unit did not have the required qualifications and thirty municipal managers, one CEO, 12 CFOs and 22 heads of SCM units did not meet any of the

prescribed competency requirements. The most common material findings on the competencies of key personnel were that the competencies of the officials were not assessed. Now to make this all clear: There are competent, unemployed people out there and the powers that be just need to make sure that these are the people they employ. They should get rid of the deadwood that sits in the municipal offices earning exorbitant salaries without lifting a finger. If the Metropolitan City is to be recognised Lerato...

Picket at Johan Heyns

Mduduzi Mathebula

VANDERBIJLPARK. - Members of the National Education, Health and Allied Workers’ Union (NEHAWU) made their voices clear to management of the Johan Heyns Clinic when they picketed for the entire week during their lunch break on the clinic premises last week. The picketing was led by the Sedibeng NEHAWU branch, which was very vocal for the dismissal of labour manager Thami Ngcana. Ngcana is said to have acted for months now, calling the shots. The Union had no vote of confidence for Johan Heyns Clinic management and its operations system. They stated their grievances to union members during picketing. It was clear that Ngcana was not their favourite person as it was said that he ran the Clinic like a ‘tuck shop’ and interferes with other departments without people knowing which de-

partment he heads. The protesters went through the clinic singing and shouting that Ngcana must step down and they don’t want him. Their voices and placards were saying much of what they want and feel about the labour manager. Bassie Tshabalala (NEHAWU Sedibeng chairperson) says the clinic does not take them seriously as they don’t even know how Ngcana was deployed. He and other executive members cited a number of issues. They are not happy, for example, with the firing of employees. Sedibeng Ster tried to contact the clinic manager but he was not available. At the time of going to print Sedibeng Ster was still waiting for the Clinic’s response.

SANCA fights drug abuse Mduduzi Mathebula

SEDIBENG. – A march of a few kilometres was worth every step to most community members of Ratanda on Friday morning. This was when the Social Development Department in Sedibeng Region hosted an International Day against Drug and Illicit Trafficking. Its purpose was to make communities aware of the dangers of substance abuse and encourage people to strengthen their ability to fight the scourge of drug trafficking in and out of the country. The Ratanda Multipurpose Centre was packed to capacity by the community of Ratanda and surrounding areas. According to event coordinator, social auxiliary worker Nomgqibelo Yende, the event aimed to reach the men, women and children of Sedibeng: “About 500 people attended the awareness campaign which started with a successful march. The formal event was from 10:00 to 15:00.

Different stakeholders were invited to inform the community about their involvement in the fight against substance abuse. The attendance of Community Safety MMC Sibongile Makhubu and Peter Kele from the office of Community Safety in the Sedibeng Office was also an indication and proof that people selling ‘nyaope’ to our youth will be dealt with,” says Yende. There were numerous presentations to educate the community about the abuse of drugs and addiction. Sandy Miya from SANCA emphasised the ethic of helping each other as drug abuse affects the whole of society. Community members were disappointed to hear that the Lesedi mayor could not come and address them on issues that affect them deeply. SANCA conducted a march against drug abuse in Ratanda on Friday. We have cabbage fields for sports grounds SHOOTING FROM THE HIP WITH ZACHARIA NALE Shooting From The Hip still doesn’t understand why the organisers took the McDonald U/14 Cup to the bumpy Saul Tsotetsi Sports Centre soccer pitch over the weekend. As much as the organisers wanted to bring

the games closer to the community, the state of that soccer field is just not suitable for an event like that. As the field left much to be desired, the boys performed as many of us expected they wouldnot to the best of their ability. For example, teams like School Of Excellence like to play carpet football but the conditions made things difficult for them. It was like a ‘cabbage field.’ These youngsters couldn’t even control the ball because of the bumpiness of the pitch. The organisers could have taken these games to better facilities - like the Isak Steyl Stadium, as the Shakespeare Stadium is retained for the upcoming OR Tambo Municipality Ga-

mes. In fact we shamed ourselves a little in front of those visitors because they thought this was the best facility we have in our region. Some of them complained on arrival about the state of the field. This was an indication that we don’t have proper facilities in townships to host such events. Point in case, the Zone 7 Stadium is not what it used to be and mind you, this is the only venue with two soccer fields in the township. In most cases we tend to blame municipalities for not maintaining township facilities but, as a community, we too must take care of our facilities. There is no way our facilities can survive if five teams train in them for the whole

week. The Zone 7 and Boipatong Stadiums also look like ‘cabbage’ fields. There is no control and people do as they wish. The only reason why CEOP facilities still look much better is because the teams or academies use the facilities and take good care of them, understanding that these are the only facilities left in area. If we use our facilities for gambling purposes, then they will look exactly like the Boipatong and Zone 7 Stadium. It is a shame for our region to host a big tournament such as McDonald in the kind of conditions that it did. Sies, man!

Sedibeng still best producer of finest talent : Sono SEDIBENG. - Jomo Sono believes the Vaal is still the best region at producing the finest talent in South African football to date. Sono was speaking after the Nale Football Academy was crowned the Jomo Cosmos Academy Tournament champions. The event was recently held at Rand Stadium. The local academy was crowned the tournament champion in two categories – the u/15 and u/17. They achieved this feat after they beat Jomo Cosmos u/15 and PCO Academy 1-0 respectively in the entertaining finals. The tournament was part of Cosmos’s bid to identify new talent for Cosmos Academy and its senior team. The tournament saw the eight top academies battling for the honour for two days – Saturday and Sunday. Despite scouting the best talent, Sono says the tournament was also part of giving these up-andcoming Bafana Bafana stars a platform from

which to showcase their talent on the big stage. “History has proven that the Vaal has produced the best talent over the past 20 years and even today the best talent comes from this region. It is just unfortunate there has been no professional team in the area after Vaal Professionals was relegated from top flight football. But I have hope having watched this academy, because they play a new brand of football. I have never seen even a PSL team play the kind of brand played by this academy,” said Sono. Great news for Sedibeng is also that Sono said he would invite this Vanderbijlpark-based academy to play as curtain-raiser in their National First Division League games when the season starts. More good news is that three players from the academy, Ofentse Mooi, Godfrey Khambule and Thabo Nana, have joined Jomo Cosmos after they impressed Sono.

VANDERBIJLPARK. - Vaal University of Technology (VUT) second-year sport management students will host sporting activities for the local NGOs of their choice. The event is scheduled to take place at Isak Steyl Stadium on August 21. Despite the event being part of their assignment, group publicist Andiswa Mkhize says they will also take this opportunity to celebrate Women’s Month. She says they will join millions of South Africans to celebrate and acknowledge the contribution of women in this country. “Yes the project is part of our sport management course, but we are also celebra-

ting Women’s Month as young people. The activities will bring students closer to the community, hence we have chosen the local NGO. “We want to take part in the upliftment of our community because a lot needs to be done to improve our society, especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds. However, for the event to be successful, certain goals have to be met - one of which is making sure that all the necessary resources are available and catered for,” she says. According to Mkhize they are targeting more or less 70 children between ages of nine and 14 from Assumpta Primary “School in Sharpeville.

SEDIBENG. - Sedibeng also joined millions of South Africans to celebrate Women’s Month at various venues over the weekend. There was also a hive of activity at the dusty grounds of Zone 17 with Selloane Ladies FC and Dora Ladies FC celebrating Women’s Month in style when the two women’s soccer teams played the game. Locals came in numbers to support the initiative with Selloane Ladies FC beating Dora Ladies FC 2-1 to be crowned the champions. Martin Mpholo, one of the organisers, believes some of the ladies in both teams deserve to play for Banyana Banyana. Mpholo says, “I have no doubt that some of them can play for Banyana Banyana because they are so talented. I think we must celebrate Women’s Month beyond August because of the role they play in our society.”

Meanwhile, there was also a Women’s Day Tournament at the Moletsane Sports Centre over the weekend. This was in remembrance of women who marched to Pretoria protesting against Pass Laws. The tournament was played in different age-categories of four divisions. It was a ‘razzmatazz’ of a tournament as ex-professional players from Keep Fit Soccer League such as former Orlando Pirates speedy winger Joseph Ngake, former Moroka Swallows midfielder Jachonia Cibi, Thembinkosi Biyela (former Moroka Swallows), Tshepo Molatedi (former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder), Tsietsi Diale (Black Leopard and Black Aces goalkeeper) entertained the spectators. Keep Fit Masters were crowned the tournament champions. Wathinta'aBafazi, wa Thint'iMbokodo: Some of the Women's Month action at various venues in Sedibeng.
