VEREENIGING. - “Please forgive me. I won’t do it again.” This was the cry of a 20-year-old suspected cable thief who was caught red-handed at a transformer in Furrina Avenue, Bedworthpark. The suspect claims his name is Thabiso Mofokeng and that he is from Sharpeville. He and his friend are said to be regular thieves who always terrorise communities by fiddling with transformers and leaving people in the dark. On Friday morning Mofokeng’s ‘career’ came to an abrupt end. At 04:00 neighbours suddenly experienced ‘loadshedding’ in three streets. This made them wonder what the problem was and as a resident looked

through a window, he saw two young men busy at a transformer. He alerted the neighbours, who stormed out in a collective fury. They chased the two suspects and caught one of them (Mofokeng) three streets away from where the transformer is situated. Mofokeng was caught and taught a lesson he will not easily forget. His friend managed to escape. Neighbours came out in numbers and looked on as the suspect packed out the cables he had cut from the transformer. He was assaulted with any weapon the community could lay their hands on. Mofokeng pleaded with the community to spare his life as he claimed that he had learned his lesson and would not steal again. Police were called to the scene and on arrival they found the young thief sitting next to the transformer with a white bag containing the copper wires he had just stolen. Police spokesperson, Captain Fikile Funda confirms that the suspect appeared in the Vereeniging Magistrates Court facing charges of malicious damage to property and theft of copper cable.

SEBOKENG. - About a hundred Kwa-Masiza hostel residents threatened and intimidated Police until they ended-up releasing a suspect arrested for cutting down seven high mast lights. Another three mast lights were found unscrewed lying on the ground with the electricity cables missing at the R82 intersection between Vereeniging, Sebokeng, Vanderbijlpark and Potchefstroom Road last week. Following a tip-off, Police arrived at Masiza and were met by a man using a gas cylinder to cut down the mast lights. Police chased and arrested the suspect. It did not go down
well with the community who charged at the Police demanding the man be released with immediate effect. Seeing that everything was out of control, the police had no choice but to release the suspect. The community blamed Police and municipal officials. They claim that when they are called to serious crime scenes, they are nowhere to be found. The community told the police that they cut the mass lights to sell them to the scrap yard owners for a living. Emfuleni Local Municipality officials confiscated one gas bottle and the pieces of the mast lights that were already cut.

VEREENIGING.- The Vereeniging police made a bizarre discovery following an accident in Vereeniging last Sunday. That day a family of six were travelling on the R59 in the direction of Sasolburg heading towards Vereeniging at about 19:30 when the driver lost control and the car overturned and rolled several times. Of the six occupants five lost their lives in the process and an 11 monthold baby boy survived and was taken to Sebokeng Hospital in a serious but stable condition. It is alleged that while driving on the R59 just after passing the Vaal River bridge towards the Voortrekker off ramp the driver lost control of the vehicle and it overturned and rolled several times. Occupants were all thrown out of the car in that process. When bodies were picked up, only four corpses were found with one missing. On Monday Police and members of the family went to the scene of the accident again to look for the missing body. At around 11:00 the body was found 100m away from the accident scene. The naked body was found under trees in a shallow quarry and its clothes were about 30m from where it was found. Police spokesperson Captain Shado Mashobane says that preliminary investigations indicated that the body was dragged from the scene of the accident to where it was found. “We suspect that the deceased was raped, howe rape did take place. Next to where the body was recovered Police found Hospital pyjama pants, a green top overall, blue overall pants, a blue long sleeve T-shirt, sunlight soap and a toothbrush in a white plastic bag”, Mashobane says. Anyone who might know someone who was at hospital and has disappeared or went missing may contact Detective Constable Molefi Taja on 016 450 2523 or 073 047 7823.

On arrival Police saw the human skull and a further search turned up the bones of a human body - buried next to the fence where there used to be a small river valley. It is not known whether the skeleton is male or female and Police could not determine how the person died. Police appeal to members of the community to come forward if they have any missing relatives for DNA testing toward identifying who the bones belong to. EFF strikes again

VANDERBIJLPARK. – The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), a strong revolutionary party on the block, was joined by numerous Bophelong residents from Joko Tea and Tennis Courts informal squatter camps to present a memorandum of grievances to the office of Executive Emfuleni Mayor, Councillor Gretha Hlongwane on Friday. They complained about pre-paid electricity and water being cut off for no apparent reason. Immediately after they were told that the mayor had not turned up to receive their memorandum, they went back and vented their anger and frustration to innocent motorists on the Golden Highway. The protesters fearlessly barricaded the R57 with burning a1sqlxv

tyres and assorted objects, forcing motorists to seek alternative roads. A group of protesters appeared from the squatter camp with burning tyres and rocks. Luckily no motorists were reported injured. The road was barricaded for almost three hours with members of the Public Order Police Service (Pops) having their hands full. Teargas and birdshot used by Police failed to intimidate protesters. Warrant Officer Kinnie Steyn said Police managed to bring the situation under control. According to her, no injuries or arrests were reported. EFF expects to emerge victorious at the squatter camps as disgruntled residents point out that their homes have become shelters for refugees. The party is aiming to take a front seat in the next year’s national elections. “We do not aim to give in when it comes to the demands of residents and members,” say EFF member Mabuza Motsoenyane. The party warned against government violating community rights, particularly those squatting as they struggle to express their feelings. “The law is equal for everyone but those who lead the masses violate rights and turn our country into a banana republic. The voters will not be blind forever,” Motsoenyane said,

9R_Na\ @R_R_\ “My brother living with HIV\Aids is still my brother.” This week the world will be celebrating World Aids Day. On this day we are asked to act responsible and be aware of the pandemic that is ravishing mankind, particularly in Africa where zillions of people continue to be ignorant of this plague. World Aids Day, observed on December 1 every year, is dedicated to raising awareness of the Aids pandemic caused by the spread of HIV infec-

Take action this World AIDS Day tion. In Africa (Yes, in Africa) we continue to be silent about this disease as though it does not exist. Many continue to live reckless lives and many feel that should they talk about their status they will be purged from society, rightfully so. I respect the kind of person who has made peace with their status and continue to live a healthy life knowing that this (HIV\Aids) is not a death sentence. Aids has killed millions of people over the years and many more continue to live with it, making it one of the most destructive epidemics in recorded history. Despite recent, improved access to antiretroviral treatment and care in many regions of the world, the Aids epidemic continues to claim millions,
many of them innocent children. Acting aware about HIV\Aids means finding out the facts and using this knowledge to protect yourself and others against infection. The 2013 theme for World Aids Day is “Shared responsibility: Strengthening Results for an Aids-Free Generation.” This coming World Aids Day, I call on you to stand up and be man enough about living with HIV in the 21st century. Stand up and use resources effectively and improve the programmes implemented by different organisations to curb this scourge. Whilst doing this, those responsible must not forget to address the needs of the marginalised groups to lower their risk of infection and to ensure early a, I believe, include sex
workers, truck drivers, prisoners and people who live in confined groups such as farm workers and young people - especially girls and young women. We must also bring up the many interventions that have been shown to work. An area that remains of significant concern is the stigma and persistent discrimination in our society and this must come to an END. Now, this World Aids Day, let us remember that if you are not infected, you are definitely affected, therefore it is time you make a stand. Get tested and know your status. Lastly remember that your brother living with HIV\Aids is still your brother, didn’t you know? Lerato...

SHARPEVILLE, - “We were used liked condoms!” These were the words of Ward 13 HIV and Aids volunteers project. The group stormed into the Sedibeng Ster offices needing help in connection with what saw them volunteering for a full 12 months - earning a mere R300 per person per month. Vuyelwa Nchawe, the head of the 12 health volunteers, says they started this project as volunteers and were promised listing as first-preference when vacancies opened last year in June. “This HIV and Aids project was not child’s play, certainly not as a volunteer. We worked very hard to fulfil the
needs and mandates given. Now suddenly when the project starts to receive funding, we are no longer needed as much as before,” says Brenda Nchawe, one of the volunteers. They claim to have undergone all the right procedures to lodge their grievances with the local councillor and municipality but they were sent from pillar to post. Speaking to the Emfuleni Local Municipality MMC of Health, Sello Pitso says that he knew about the project but at the time of going to print, he had not responded to enquiries. VEREENIGING. – Praying for the smooth passage of the Vaal Metro on Thursday in the Vereeniging Civic Hall the Sedibeng District (SDM) Municipality hosted pastors, bishops, community leaders and different stakeholders to pray for, thank and ask God for the glory of a Vaal Metropolitan. SDM had declared the Vaal Metro battle as over. Speaking on behalf of Mayor Simon Mahole Mofokeng, the MMC for Local Economic Development Maipato Tsokolibane was bold enough to stand up for
her leader. She elucidated for the benefit of the masses who attended the prayer that the Vaal Metro was long overdue. She added that the Vaal community should be proud to have leaders who are consistent. “The Vaal Metropolitan River City was a mandate that was fought for by former Mayor Mlungisi Hlongwane and the current mayor. We have fought the good battle to change our community. We have the mandate to deliver to our communities. Through River City we will manage to see change that will be controlled by one municipality,” saidTsokolibane. She added that even though the battle is not yet over, since they are still to appear in court, pastors, churches and the community should not stop praying. Reverend Gift Moerane said to attendees that their prayers and time should not be wasted on corrupt leadership. Moerane said the ruling party should not take the community for a ride, but support them. He quoted the history books that illustrated that the Vaal played a significant role towards liberation.

Too high to notice anything Moleboheng Chaha
VANDERBIJLPARK. - Street residents known to society as “street kids” were too high on glue to show any gratitude towards `good samaritans’ who threw them a charity event on Saturday. The Members of VUT partnered French South African Schneider Electronic Education Centre, Enactus, in association with the Civic Centre Taxi Association, initiated their long term programme on Saturday, which aimed to improve the lives of street kids by providing food and clothes for them, as well as making sure they get a roof over their heads. From Enactus Ranti Letswalo said: “We have noticed that these people have been sniffing glue ever since the event started, but because this is the first time that we are meeting with them, we can not tell them to stop right away. This is something that might take a while as we do not want to scare them off.” Roland Mbougou from F’SASEC states that they saw it as important to give these kids living on the streets a chance to better the standard of their lives. “These kids have run away from home because of different circumstances. The life they live here is not better though because they live in harsh
conditions.” The event also highlighted how kids living on the streets suffered with addiction to various substances. Mbougou adds that it is important for the Municipality to come on board and help with events such a these. “The event we held today was just the beginning. We would like to do more to help these children and in order to do that we need the municipality to come on board. I would like to urge ELM to get more involved with organisations that aim to help the residents of this region as they are the ones that can bring in the big change,”Mbougou concludes.
Vukuzenzele Development Forum vows to bring change to their community by clea ning dumpi sites.

SHARPEVILLE. – Vukuzenzele Development Forum, an initiative of young people in Sharpeville, came up with the idea to deploy their time and minds toward creation of a healthy environment by cleaning all the dumping sites in their area. These young people noticed that if nothing was done to fight this health hazard, nothing would be done. “We decided to initiate a forum that would make young people join forces to stand for what they believe in - clean minds creating clean thoughts,” says Molefi Molibatsi. He says dirty places do not breed good thoughts. “We were affected by the bad

Sarah Sebalo says, “Part of the forum says converting a dump site into a useful site was within their reach and they went for it with both hands. “We are still in the initial staging. Stores will be situated in dense residential, township, rural and developing areas, and conveniently located near commuter nodes. The pilot stores open in Tembisa and Evaton on Friday, November 29. The superstore concept creates a sense of power, strength and superiority which translates into the Builders Superstore promise: “Super Value, Super Prices, Super Service and Super Advice.” Directional signaa1sqzc5
ge on every aisle will help customers find what they are looking for and create an inviting shopping experience. Customers can expect competitive pricing, friendly and resourceful staff and ease of accessibility in this format. The range will be narrow and focused but will remain project complete. The Builders Superstores will provide customers with all basic structure products including cement, timbre, bricks, roofing and glass as well as other products that are not offered in a Warehouse/Express store e.g. paraffin, candles and in the near future, pre-paid electricity.
Service offerings will include: estimating, truss manufacturing and design, credit facilities, key cutting, paint tinting, deliveries, glass cutting as well as gas filling and gas exchange. “We encourage continuous engagement and participation with local communities in which our stores operate and are committed to supporting and promoting initiatives that focus on early childhood development and feeding schemes. “We have selected Beverly Hills Secondary School in Evaton as a beneficiary of 125 donated desks to the value of R80 000.” This school has been selected to
be part of an “adopt a school” programme facilitated by Ripples for Good. The total number of lives which will be positively impacted through the continuous relationship between Builders Superstore and the Beverly Hills Secondary School is over 1400. In addition, the school will receive a R5000 donation as well as a Siyasiza toolkit (worth R10 000) to improve and maintain the school facilities. A total of 32 positions will be created with the opening of the new Builders Superstore in Evaton and a total of 26 positions with the opening of the Tembisa store.

LoveLife scoops three awards
27 November - 3 December 2013
SEDIBENG. - The loveLife team engaged in the organisation’s Media Wise Programme scooped three awards at this year’s Vuselela Community Journalism Awards. The Vuselela Community Journalism Awards is a new award that was created to encourage young people who have undergone their “B Media Ys” training to pursue careers in journalism and media. As accessing financial aid to study is not always easy, the award offers prizes to help launch young people’s careers in media. The theme for this year’s awards was: “Stories of hope, change and making a difference in my community,” and categories ranged from documentaries and ‘voxx’ pops, which all had to be two to five minutes long. Vaal’s own Sihle Mbathane, a groundbreaker at Orange Farm loveLife Youth-Centre in Gauteng, came

third for his vibrant documentary on the African Pantsulas, a popular dance crew in his community. His piece won him a Boston City Campus Bursary worth R20 000 to study towards a qualification at any of their centres. He was also handed R2000 to kickstart his studies. “I am very happy for our groundbreakers who won the community journalism awards,” says Fikile Ntanzi, National Manager of the Media Wise Programme. “We competed against many great organisations and won all three awards. To mark the 16 Days of Activism for no Violence Against Women and Children, loveLife is running a campaign entitled: “The Sound of Silence Breeds Violence.” The campaign is being expressed in various ways, including talk-shows on nearly 30 community radio stations and, through loveLife, groundbreakers is informing youth across the country about ways to avoid and to stand up to abuse.

Musical play for Evaton
Mduduzi Mathebula
EVATON. - Siphiwe Tshabalala, Happy Tshabalala, Abbey Maeane, Lerako Letsupa, Sticks Mojane and Sibusiso Ndumndum, were the names rung up for a showcase showdown that amounted to no less than a glittering stage performance. Maeane has been working for Motswako Performing Artists for a full 13 years. He is the founder and has written and directed numerous plays. He is a TV personality, featured in Yizo Yizo and Backstage and other shows. Maeane comes up with one of his best-written stories about the ‘History of Evaton’ which he co-wrote with Siphiwe. “We create a great platform for young ac-
tors and actresses for such projects; we believe it’s going to be an international hit. The history of Evaton is very rich and it needs to be told. The musical play will display exactly how Evaton was formed and what kind of people lived there,” says Maeane. A short preview was showcased for Sedibeng Ster recently. All the struggle songs and jive and music were played. Incidents that created the history of Evaton were also illustrated through drama. Co-writer Siphiwe says: “It’s about time we tell our own stories through our own people. The musical play portrays events such as ‘azikhwelwa’ and riots during the 1970s and 80s.” Siphiwe is also a musical director.

This one day special prayer fixed my marriage and financial problems. My life was in turmoil. My husband left me and my chlidren were always getting sick. A testimony was viewed on a local TV channel. I knew that I will be able to receive help from Mama Sheeva. I was divorced for nine years and I was reunited with my ex-husband within three days. She performed a special prayer for me and my family. My husband became drug free. I paid R200 for consultation. They used a mirror and showed me the faces of my enemies. I was given love crystals, indian ash and a special ring to fix my financial problems Now I am happily married and have been promoted at work. Mama Sheeva is highly recommended they also help with births, to pass exams, with heartbreak, finances and unfinished jobs. 9c0

Ndweni hails Grassroots U/16 Festival as a sucess
Zacharia Nale
ORANGE FARMS.- More than 260 children turned out for the Grassroots Football U/6 Festival at Stretford Park, Extension 6, on Saturday. This overwhelming attendance was hailed as a huge success by project publicist Zacharia Ndweni. According to Ndweni they did not expect such an incredible number for the event. “To be honest we did not expect such numbers – thanks to Sedibeng Ster Sports for publishing the information. The response was positive to say the least, and children had fun. We want to thank the Orange Farm community for making this day a special one. It was also encouraging to see parents getting involved by helping with their children during the day.
They were not there just to bring their children but they also play an important role,” says Ndweni. Safa Johannesburg President Anthony Reeves was among the guests that day. This former Safa Sedibeng President was full of compliments for the organisers of this initiative. He believes that this kind of project is much needed to promote a positive lifestyle to these children at a young age. However, Ndweni believes that this event wouldn’t be successful if it wasn’t for the support of stakeholders like the Gauteng Department of Sports and Recreation, TiisetsoBekezela Primary School, Safa NEC members and Orange Farm Sports Council to mention but few.

SEBOKENG. - KFC in conjunction with the Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM) will host a Red Ribbon Charity Fun Run at the Saul Tsotetsi Sports Complex in Zone 14 in December. According to organisers all proceeds will be donated towards Aids Awareness Campaigns as December is known to be World Aids Month. The participating fee is R50 and all participants will receive the goodies as a token of appreciation. The Fun Run will start at 7:00 with the 8 km run and follow up with the 5km. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sports, Oupa Mashiloane of ELM Sports and
Recreation, the municipality supports this event because, for one thing, it is organised by the community. He urged the community to come and support this initiative as it is for a good cause. “We as the municipal Sports Department are excited to be part of this initiative because it is our duty to support communities. We appeal to the Sedibeng community to come in big numbers to support this event,” he says. This Charity Fun Run is the first of its kind to be held in Sedibeng to date. This Fun Run promises to attract some prominent Sedibeng people because many believe it is a special initiative to stage in this region.

SHOOTING FROM THE HIP With Zacharia Nale
In South African professional football it is unheard of for a greenhorn of 17 to just walk into a first team and make it his permanent berth. In the past coaches were not scared to throw would-be young, stars into the deep end, but not anymore. Those blessed with an excellent eye for spotting raw talent that could become shining diamonds after some polishing, bring these prospective stars closer to glory by signing them up with the PSL teams, but they only rot on the bench.

Soccer players should also think of having a DEGREE Those coaches who are hungry for success show little interest in giving these youngsters a chance to show what they can do. Shooting From The Hip believes that many more unknown youngsters in this country will never rise and shine unless coaches start having faith in them. Where are those brave coaches who risk their jobs to field these youngsters to mesmerise soccer fans with their ball-artistry toward their professional debut? Shooting From The Hip hates to say this, but the current PSL coaches are more interested in securing their jobs than giving these youngsters a fair chance to prove themselves. These cowardly coaches need to wake up to the fact that the youngsters can gain experience only by spending more time on the field. Shooting From The Hip wants to reflect to when Iwisa Spectacular was a perfect platform
from which the PSL teams could display or introduce unknown talent on the South African soccer scene. How many talented young stars have been wasted just because some of the coaches are not brave enough to risk their jobs by giving these up-and-coming youngsters a chance to prove themselves. For now Cape Town Ajax is the only team in PSL that still believes in giving youngsters a chance while the main concern of other teams seems to be conquering the PSL and sweeping up each and every trophy they can. Shooting From The Hip feels pity for those development coaches who work so hard at grassroots level to introduce exciting talent but whose efforts are laid to waste by those “greedy” pursuers of the PSL. Let’s be honest, watching some PSL teams play is like sitting in a queue waiting for a dentist. There is a chance you might leave before
the doctor gets to you because of the pain suffered by those who went before you. It is all about three points on offer and to “HELL” with those who paid hard cash to watch an exciting game. For now there are only two or three teams that Shooting From The Hip really wants to watch because they play the kind of football that is pleasing to me: they are Orlando Pirates, Platinum Stars and Ajax Cape Town. Forget about where they are on the PSL log-standing but one sits down and takes notes when those “chickens” play. There is a lesson here for all development coaches - to encourage these youngsters to arm themselves with education against this unfortunate football scenario in the PSL. Maybe players should also start wishing they could clinch a degree as intensely as they fantasise about playing in the PSL.

SEBOKENG. - Sensei Buti Maqata of Sebokeng Kyo-Kushin Karate Club will compete in the World Karate Championship scheduled to take place in Swaziland over the weekend. He recently achieved this feat after his outstanding performance during a karate tournament held at Bedfordview. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sports Maqaba says this achievement is not an individual achievement but also an achievement for the team. He says this is the highlight of his karate career and he is looking forward to conquering this championship. Maqaba oozed confidence when he told Sedibeng Ster Sports that he would not come home empty-handed but victoriousy. “I’m looking forward to this championship and I have no doubt in my mind that
I will make Sedibeng proud come the weekend. I can’t wait for this championship because I have been training very hard to keep myself fit. This is a dream come true for me because finally my hard work has paid off. It has always been my fondest wish to fight against the best of the best and this is my opportunity to show the world what I’m capable of. For the first time in my career I have this kind of confidence and this is time for me to start believing in myself,” says Maqaba. Not long ago, Maqaba tested his strength when he fought it out with a cow much to the surprise of his neighbours. Meanwhile, Sensei Bongiwe Skosana will also be heading to Swaziland to participate in this karate championship, fighting in the female category. Maqaba says this is good news, especially for female karatekas in this region.

‘The Students’ start the league like a house on fire Zacharia Nale
SEDIBENG. - VUT FC alias ‘The Students’ started the Safa Sedibeng SAB League like a house on fire, sitting at the summit of the log with nine points. This is the same performance The Students logged at the beginning of the last season but their wheels came off in mid-season with Real Hearts moving to the top. However, in this turn around amkes it seem as if VUT FC has found itslucky charm - if their current
performance is anything to go by. They continued with their impressive performance when they beat the struggling The Birds FC 1-0 in the league match played at the Isak Steyl Stadium on Friday night. The Students have played three games and won all of them. This is the kind performance that will crown them league champions at the end of the season. However, hot on their heels is the Safa Sedibeng SAB League defending champions Real Hearts. This Lesedi-based outfit is se-
cond on the log with seven points from the same number of games. Last season Real Hearts conquered the Safa Sedibeng SAB League despite the fact that it was their debut in the league. They are also the favourites to walk away with the league championship at the end of the season if their current display suggests anything. Sharpeville Vaal Milano FC is another team that kicked off their league campaign with a storm, with seven points from
three games. This is a good start for Milano, which finished the league on a high note last season. This Sharpeville-based team side looks like champion material. However, only time will tell if they can handle the pressure at the top. The new babies of the block - Central United FC - surprised many by occupying the fourth spot on the log with seven points from the same number of games with Vaal Milano.
