VANDERBIJLPARK. – A man’s inappropriate attempt at a joke with an infant and his parents at the President Hyper (Vaal) has developed into a major embarrassment for the supermarket group and two local clergymen. Thousands of social media users have believed and spread a distorted story of a child who was “abducted at a shopping center” and are now embarrassed by their own gullibility. What actually happened was an infant was walking just ahead of his parents at President Hyper (Vaal) when a man jokingly picked him up from behind. The man’s inappropriate attempt at teasing the child and his parents misfired as the mother reacted with extreme shock even though he immediately gave the child back. By chance the child was the grandson of a Vereeniging clergyman (Ster is withholding his name in order to protect the identity of the child). Sy sal onthou word as ‘n vriendelike, saggeaarde mens met ‘n passie vir haar medemens. Marieta het erge geelsig in 2014 gehad en is op 23 Februarie in Mediclinic Emfuleni opgeneem vir longontsteking, waarna haar organe ingegee het. Sy is op 27 Februarie vanuit die NG Kerk Kollegepark begrawe. Die familie bedank almal vir hul ondersteuning, hulp en liefde gedurende die tyd. VEREEENIGING. - Foreign nationals residing in Vereeniging received the shock of their lives when they saw that a horrific accident claimed the life of one of their own. Ethiopian citizen Etenesh Tesfaye Dentamo (27) was later confirmed dead by emergency personnel at the scene.

According to Vereeniging SAPS spokesperson Captain Fikile Funda, an Audi was travelling along Joubert Street, heading west, and the robot was green for him at the intersection of Beaconsfield Avenue. Funda adds that a white NP200 Nissan bakkie was traversing Beaconsfield in a southerly direction, for which the robot was

red. Funda says, “The driver of the Nissan bakkie realised that he was about to collide with the Audi and immediately swerved left, bumping into the town council wall.” “The driver, also an Ethiopian male, was taken to Sebokeng Hospital with serious injuries.” Funda concluded.

VEREENIGING. - Motorists were forced to slow down due to a capsized scrap truck at the Boy Louw Robots on Sunday afternoon. The truck is said to have capsized because its driver tried at speed to turn, offloading its cargo of scrap metal. The ensuing traffic jam choked Beaconsfield Road, stalling traffic. Sedibeng Ster was deployed to the accident scene where it was established that no-one had been injured except the truck driver, whose injuries were minor. This driver says he has no idea what happened. He only remembers being pulled out of the truck. Some motorists helped out, asking other motorists to slow down due to the diesel that had spilled onto the road. A bystander noted that the road, already wet due to rain, now endangered lives because it was now also covered in diesel. The fallen scrap was taken by an alternative truck deployed to the scene. The idea was to remove it before the `scrap vultures’ sniffed a scrap feast. Police confirm that a case of reckless driving and negligence is being investigated.

Crime report The Vanderbijlpark SAPS managed to arrest a total of 55 people last weekend for various crimes. Five illegal shebeens were closed and 13 people were arrested for driving under the influence and eight suspects for possession of drugs. Business-breakins are still a problem. Theft of motor vehicles is down compared to last year, but now motorbikes are being stolen, especially scooters. Sergeant Gertrude Makhale, communications officer of the SAPS in Vanderbijlpark said that housebreak-ins and thefts had been quiet since the arrest of three suspects, who were linked to 13 cases. A business robbery happened on Saturday, March 14, when six men overpowered employees and customers at a jewellery store in the CBD. Jewellery was taken, watches, rings etc. to the total value of R612 000. All arrested suspects appeared in the Vanderbijlpark Magistrates Court. “Though we may face many challenges we are utilising maximum resources to address crime effectively in order to bring criminals to justice,” said Gertrude. VANDERBIJLPARK. - Om op die jong ouderdom van vier jaar met kanker gediagnoseer te word, is iets wat nie vir so ‘n jong kind beskore is nie, maar in vandag se lewe ‘n realiteit is. Ruan Grobler (4) het op 15 Julie verlede jaar begin siek voel. Hy het medikasie gekry vir griep, maar het net sieker geword. Hy het gesukkel om te loop en het erge maagpyn gehad. Ruan se ouers, Christine en Paul het hom dokter toe geneem en hy het net nog medikasie gekry. Ruan se bene het op 27 Julie 2014 heeltemal ingegee en hy het gehuil van pyn. Nier- en lewerkanker is toe by hom gediagnoseer. Ruan het vir vier weke chemoterapie ontvang by die Little Company of Mary Hospitaal in Pretoria en op 27 September 2014 is een van sy niere in die Eugene Marais Hospitaal verwyder. Centurion Motorfietsklub het reeds verskeie bydraes gelewer om ‘n groot deel van Ruan se kostes te dek. Om sy ouers te help om die mediese onkostes te dek, word ‘n verjaardagpartytjie op 28 Maart vir Ruan gehou by Shakespearstraat 19, CW 5 in Vanderbijlpark. Daar sal stalletjies wees waar heerlike kos gekoop kan word. ‘n Kontantkroeg sal beskikbaar wees en geen koeldrank of drank sal toegelaat word nie. Die publiek word genooi om geskenke en donasies saam te bring. Daar gaan sangers wees en geen toegangsfooie word betaal nie, maar lapelwapens sal te koop wees teen R30. “Dit gaan goed met Ruan en hy gaan weer vanaf 8- tot 27 Maart Pretoria toe vir verdere chemo behandeling,” sê Christine. SEBOKENG. - Kingsol Tshababala of the Democratic Alliance - member of the provincial legislature (MPL) - was joined by local members to donate shoes to pupils of the Mosioa and Mojalathuto Primary Schools. Tshabalala said they were engaged by the party to encourage pupils to pay attention to their studies. This could only be made easier by assisting with donations, he said: “It is no use to always speak politics to the community.” He said the communities sometimes expect all kinds of help from political parties: “We want to bring change for the better to the community,” he said. “This is not an election campaign, but is aimed at changing the lives of learners.” MPL Tshabalala, who was accompanied by three local members, said winter is around the corner: “We would like all the children to enjoy going to school.” Mojalathuto and Mosioa were donated 33 and 50 pairs of shoes respectively: “As a constituency, we will soon be donating over 150 soccer balls to participants in sports to fights against crime and abuse.” Grade two learners Ditshewane Nnete (6) and Itumeleng Sediadiane (7) said they are going to make sure they look after the shoes: “The political party comes at the time when our shoes start to tear.” Educator Kabelo Pule said a rtremendous help had come from the DA: “We will encourage the learners to look after their shoes.”

VUT hosts InterCultural Day

VANDERBIJLPARK. - The growth of the Vaal University of Technology (VUT) into a formidable tertiary institution, both in stature and size - drawing students and staff from all over the world, motivated the need to host, embrace and celebrate all cultures on campus with an annual Inter Cultural Day. This year the event took place on Saturday, March 14. The VUT has 22 000 students of which about 2 000 are international, coming from more than 35 countries. These students come from very diverse cultural backgrounds all over the world. The Inter-Cultural Day is one of the most important annual events on the campus. It is directed at appreciating these diverse cultural differences. “As the Vaal University of Technology faces its current aspirations, it is important that we remember and celebrate our

strengths and our values. Diversity remains one of VUT’s highest priorities, and one of the most important ideals. “VUT hopes that this event will encourage interaction and harmony among staff and students, thus contributing to the social justice and transformation agenda of the university as well as to the strategic positioning of the university as far as internationalisation is concerned,” said Ms Kediemetse Mokotsi, Director: Marketing & Public Relations. Launch of Peugeot 308 The 2014 European Car of the Year is finally available in South Africa. Peugeot SA this month launches the all-new 308 hatchback, heralding the advent of the marque’s most advanced hatchback to date. Designed around Peugeot’s new-generation Efficient Modular Platform 2 (EMP2), the new 308 combines compact, wieldy dimensions and a substantially reduced kerb mass with an advanced, high-efficiency drivetrain to deliver exceptional dynamics and frugal fuel consumption. The interior execution reflects the advanced nature of the 308, as well as close attention to design detail, high comfort levels and tactile quality. The cockpit design combines deeply recessed, highly visible instrument dials with a large, full-colour touchscreen display, while a multifunction steering wheel further benefits intuitive access to key functions and features. Mirroring a design trend first introduced by the 208 and 2008, the 308’s ergonomic layout combines a small-diameter steering wheel with an elevated instrument binnacle, allowing an unencumbered view of the road and the key instrumentation. Despite the fact that the new 308 is more compact than its predecessor, efficient packaging and intelligent design conspire to create a roomy cabin with spacious accommodation for front and rear occupants. Smart finishes, including textured surfaces, metallic accents and high-gloss inserts, establish an upmarket ambience, adding to the new Peugeot 308’s feel-good character. Practicality remains a further 308 attraction, with a generous luggage compartment, and a 60/40-split rear bench seat that can be partly of completely folded flat to boost cargo space. A five-star Euro-NCAP rating underscores the new Peugeot hatchback’s exceptional safety standards, with a comprehensive array of active and passive safety features. The new Peugeot 308 is initially offered in two variants, both employing Peugeot latest, high-efficiency PureTech engine technology. The cutting-edge, three-cylinder powerplant incorporates high-pressure direct injection,

four valves per cylinder, and high-pressure turbocharging. The result is a small-capacity engine with compact dimensions and low mass that emulates the power and torque of a much larger, more conventional and less efficient power plant, while achieving clear benefits as far as reduced exhaust emissions and lower fuel consumption are concerned. Starting off the range is the Peugeot 308 Active, which is fitted with the 1.2 PureTech e-THP 110 engine. It produces a maximum power output of 81 kW at 5 500 r/min, combined with a generous 205 Nm of torque, available from just 1 500 r/min. A five-speed manual gearbox is standard. By comparison, the 1.2 PureTech e-THP 130 engine fitted to the 308 GT Line elevates those output levels even further. Maximum power increases to an impressive 96 kW at 5 Peugeot 308 500 r/min, while torque now peaks at 240 Nm, already on song from only 1 750 r/min. The GT Line model gets a six-speed manual gearbox with optimised ratios.The differences between the Active and GT Line models extend to exterior styling details and interior trim and equipment levels. For instance, the GT Line gains full LED headlights, a different grille, and twin, narrowaperture tailpipes, as well as larger alloy wheels and more brightwork. While both models offer a comprehensive array of standard equipment, the GT Line gains an extended features list, together with enhanced trim levels.

Tata supports Operation Smile The Tata group recently announced it has donated R100 000 to Operation Smile South Africa, an organisation that provides free surgery to repair cleft lips, cleft palates, and other facial deformities. Do you suffer from Dry Eye Syndrome? By Donna van der Merwe (Optometrist) Dry Eye Syndrome (DES) is probably one of the eye conditions I encounter most in my everyday life as an optometrist in the Vaal Triangle. I have been practicing here since 1997 and am always surprised by how few people realise that they have an actual condition that needs to be treated on a daily basis. People generally complain that their eyes just feel sore and tired, especially after a long day in front of the computer, or burn a lot when reading and watching TV. Here are some Dry Eye questions answered: What is a Dry Eye? Basically, it just means that there are not enough tears in the eye. The natural tear film keeps the surface of the eye moist, lubricates the inside of the eyelids (makes blinking comfy), nourishes the eye and cleans and protects the eye by washing away foreign particles. It also keeps the corneal surface stable end even. This all means that when the tears stop working properly, your eyes no longer feel comfortable and your vision becomes unstable. What does a Dry Eye feel like? Typical symptoms include: Burning sensation Blurred vision that comes and goes Red eyes Sandy, gritty feeling in eyes Eyes that tear a lot, especially when concentrating Increased light sensitivity Decreased contact lens tolerance White, stringy discharge What causes Dry Eye? Dry Eye basically occurs if the tear production is inadequate or when tears evaporate excessively. Environmental Factors: fans; air conditioners; heaters; dry and windy climate conditions; working in dry and dusty environments Lifestyle Factors: smoking; medica-

tions such as anti-depressants, antihistamines, decongestants, oral contraceptives and many more; focusing for hours on a tablet, cell phone or computer or TV screen; excessive reading or needlework; driving long distances regularly Physical Factors: aging (causes a natural reduction in tear production); certain medical conditions such as diabetes, arthritis, menopause, lupus, HIV and thyroid problems. What can be done about a Dry Eye? Lubricating eye drops and gels: Just as with any chronic condition you might suffer from, a dry eye needs to be treated daily. A lubricating eye drop should be used. Make sure that it is formulated for a Dry Eye, and not for allergies or infections. Remember a Dry Eye doesn’t go away when you use the occasional drop, or when your eyes feel better. Drops should be used daily for as long as the environmental, lifestyle and physical factors listed above are present in your life. Supplements: Fish oils like Omega 3, 6 and 9 and Flaxseed Oil are often recommended.Proper sunglasses: Using a quality pair of sunglasses helps reduce the light sensitivity symptoms and keeps the wind away from your eyes. Make sure the lenses have sufficient UV protection. Polarized lenses are highly recommended.Humidifier: Use a humidifier in winter near burning heaters and fires and in summer when the aircon or fan is on. Not sure if you have a Dry Eye? PROPOSED DECOMMISSIONING OF THE EXISTING DORMANT ATLAS 400/275 KV SUBSTATION SITUATED IN MIDVAAL APPROXIMATELY 18KM SOUTH EAST OF THREE RIVERS, GAUTENG PROVINCE, AS WELL AS THE EXISTING DORMANT MATLA-ATLAS POWERLINE DEA Reference: 14/12/16/3/3/1/1285 NOTICE: Notice is given in terms of the following legislation for the above mentioned project: • Government Notice No. R 544, Activity 27 of the Environmental Impact Assessment Regulations, 2010, promulgated in terms of Section 24(5) of the National Environmental Management Act (Act No 107 of 1998); PROJECT DETAILS: Eskom Holdings SOC Limited is proposing the decommissioning of the existing dormant Atlas 400/275 kV Substation situated in Midvaal approximately 18km South East of Three Rivers, Gauteng Province, as well as the existing dormant Matla-Atlas Powerline. The Altas 400/275 kV Substation was constructed in 1966. The Altas substation tied into the Matla and the Highveld Substations, therefore there were lines looping into the Atlas Substation from the Matla Substation (Matla Atlas Lines), and lines looping out of the Atlas Substation to the Highveld Substation (Atlas-Highveld lines). In the early 2000’s Eskom had to commence the decision making process on whether to refurbish the Atlas Substation or whether to switch the substation off, as the infrastructure at the substation became dated. Eskom made the decision in 2003/2004 to switch the substation off. Since the substation was switched of, it remained dormant while Eskom had to decide whether this dormant substation will be demolished, or whether this substation will be converted into a training centre where the substation will be used as a simulation facility for Eskom employees for training purposes. Since the substation was switched off, the AtlasHighveld lines have been demolished. The Matla-Altas lines are still present on site, and it is the intention of Eskom to demolish these lines when the Atlas Substation is demolished. Approximately 40km of lines will be demolished, and a total of 114 towers. Approximately 28km of the existing Matla-Atlas line is situated within the Midvaal Local Municipality in Gauteng Province, and the remainder of the line is situated in the Dipaleseng Local Municipality within the Mpumalanga Province. The Matla-Atlas Line to be demolished is situated between the Atlas Substation and the Grootvlei Power Station. Golf day in aid of Cornelius VEREENIGING. - Big Time Events will host a Golf Day in aid of Cornelius Jacobs who suffers from arthrogryposis multiplex congenital (AMC) on March 27. This will make for a fun-filled day for a good cause. Children who suffer from AMC are born with one or more joint contractures and have abnormal fibrosis of the muscle tissue causing muscle shortening.. Therefore sufferers are unable to do passive extension and flexion in the affected joint or joints. The golf day will take place at the Riviera Golf Club. The format is an American Scramble Betterball Stableford and will cost R1 600 for four players. Those who want to sponsor a hole can do so for R2 500 and if you want to play and sponsor a hole it will cost R4 000. This is for a very good cause as this boy needs 24-hour care.
