Perspective and Illusion

Classical Drawing

Kurt Wenner Apr 13–15 or May 2–4, 2015

Kurt Wenner Apr 15–21, 2015

Illusion is the magic of art, while perspective is the organization of form and space from one unique point of view. You will learn how artists manipulate perspective by using techniques that range from simple and effective, to complex and extraordinary. Wenner will demonstrate the essentials of geometry and perspective with a variety of hands-on exercises.

Great drawings of the Renaissance have astounding beauty and ability to communicate. Wenner will explain and demonstrate the visual language of classical drawing. A set of specially designed exercises will guide you from basic to advanced drawing as you learn how to use this elegant language of form, proportion, light and space.

Kurt Wenner Apr 27–May 1, 2015

Learn the physical nature of pigment, paint and color use, and how to construct an ideal palette that maximizes your artistic potential and how paints and grounds can be made by hand to achieve effects that are superior to commercially available materials, and more economical.

Old masters achieved astonishing depth and subtlety of color using a limited selection of pigments and layering translucent colors in a process known as glazing. Learn how old masters’ painting techniques actually simplify the painting process by limiting the number of decisions artists must make.

How can we balance the abstract structure of an image with its narrative detail to make our paintings their own complete worlds? We’ll explore this theme through the rich subject matter of San Francisco. Students will work from their own reference photos with access to a media station to enable digital photo optimization, cropping and printing.

Mountain Springs Cabins will be our base camp for day trips to paint Blue Ridge Mountain panoramas, waterfalls and the vast Biltmore Estate. Through demonstrations and individual attention, this plein air workshop focuses on composition and capturing depth. Tuition includes 6 nights lodging, continental breakfast daily, two dinners and all ground transportation.

This exciting workshop will simplify the process of sculpting animals from life. Students will be shown how to build accurate armatures for birds and mammals. Then using live reference (bison, wolf, bear) students will sculpt their individual pieces as Ken demonstrates how to see and map the way to a completed field study.

Catherine Kehoe Mar 9–13, 2015

Stuart Shils Mar 16–18, 2015

Catherine Kehoe’s workshop takes a reductive approach to painting the head, experimenting with how little information is necessary. By eschewing formulas in favor of fierce looking, we investigate whether translating the head into simple, accurate shapes of color and value can create a truer likeness than a detailed description.

This workshop moves through a guided series of exercises to understand that abstraction—composition with color and shape—is the foundation, the great engine behind all painting. Emphasis on drawing interpretively from the images of the Masters, using crayons and graphite to complement our examination of form with paints.

Jan Sitts May 11–14, 2015

Vince Fazio May 15–17, 2015

“Dry brush” technique can add energy, detail and interest to any painting in any fluid medium. Paint is taken up with a small detail brush and applied in a weavinglike process. The process is slow, but the results are rich and beautiful. Working from botanical specimens, students will learn step-by-step how to match the subject’s color.

Jan creates an atmosphere of fun and discovery through innovative combinations of design and materials. Her layering method yields aggressive textures with materials that play off one another to express emotion. You will learn to let go of painting habits and gain the spontaneity and energy of not knowing where you’re going until you get there!

Whether you are interested in a refresher course or drawing for the first time, this class is for you. The course is built around five key skills: gesture, blocking, proportion, contour and shading. These skills are introduced as separate activities, then brought together into a coherent process for drawing in any situation with any materials. Includes all materials.

Think of it as a dynamic laboratory where we will experiment to expand the traditional boundaries of the medium. All materials and equipment included.

This workshop focuses on everything there is to love about painting. Each day begins with a demonstration in the All Prima method covering basics such as arranging a still life, lighting, brush selection, canvas toning, palette choices, paint and mediums. Abbey will also discuss her experience marketing and selling paintings online.

Stuart Shils Mar 20–22, 2015

Bill Cramer Apr 11–12, 2015

Tracey Frugoli Apr 19–20, 2015

The workshop will concentrate on deepening and cultivating our visual sensitivity by looking critically at nature and painting with the loaded brush. Emphasis will be placed on the perceptual processes in front of nature, the editorial response that follows in the head of the painter, and the way that perception translates into paint. This is a Master Class Intensive.

In this intensive weekend workshop we will learn the advantages of painting en plein air, various approaches to working on-site and how to efficiently compose and complete plein air paintings. Emphasis will be placed on using thumbnail sketches, limited palettes and the thoughtful use of colors, values, shapes, edges and textures.

An artist’s paradise, the Gold King Mine near Jerome presents wonderful learning opportunities for composition, color and light. By day, Tracey will teach how to build better paintings. As the light changes in late afternoon and evening, Tracey will teach her distinct methodology for executing little gems. Students should have basic familiarity with the medium of their choice.

Lori Putnum Jun 10–12, 2015

Learn to capture the sparkling beauty of nature with the immediacy of pastels. Students will create a meaningful thumbnail sketch, choose an appropriate paper and use color combinations that bring the work to life while working in the studio and from life with the beautiful Sedona landscape as subject matter. Students should have basic familiarity with pastels.

This workshop will focus on learning to see like an artist, emphasizing the fundamental skills necessary to quickly and accurately capture the beauty of nature when painting outdoors. Among the topics to be covered are design, drawing, value, hue, saturation, edges and paint application. We will also discuss the importance of painting from life to develop one’s own “voice.”

Brushwork, paint consistency and fearlessness are rarely taught. Lori Putnam believes they are essential to mastering thrilling paintings. Sessions will begin en plein air making sketches, grasping excitement and capturing ideas. These sketches will then be used as inspiration for more complete studio paintings that remain fresh and inviting.

s many as 100 artists are producing one (or more) 12-inch-by-12-inch art works that will be sold at a one-day event on June 12, 2015, for a set price of $250. It may be a painting, a photograph, or it may be made of fiber, ceramic, metal or wood, a mixture of mediums or . . . who knows?

JUNE 12 4:00 p.m. Preview and Reception $50 per person. The gallery opens to the Public at 5:00 p.m. (no charge).

As with all “lively” events, there will be an element of mystery. Buyers will not know for sure who created the art work that appeals to them until after they have purchased it! Because our list of invited artists includes many well-known artisans, collectors are likely to have purchased “for a song” a prize worth far more than the $250 they paid for it. We also like the idea that this modest price makes fine art available to a broad spectrum of collectors, some of whom are just starting out. Join us and catch the collecting bug!

Join us for a weekend of ongoing demonstrations, interaction and cross-pollination of art forms across the Sedona Arts Center campus. All events are free and open to the public. JUNE 13 MORNING SESSION  Keynote by Lori Putnam, “Being an Artist In and Out of the Studio.” Lori is a nationally known plein air and studio artist from Tennessee who will be completing a five-day residency and a three-day workshop in early June at the Arts Center. Immersing herself in the Sedona landscape and reflecting on her experience in the studio will be the theme of her display and talk. 3–D Demonstration with Dennis Ott and Susan Kliewer Interactive clay presentation/demonstration. JUNE 13 AFTERNOON SESSION  A Prose and Poetry Primer with Kate Hawkes and Martha Entin as well as “Dance and Paint” a unique performance with Sedona Chamber Ballet involving the creation of a painting through the medium of dance. JUNE 14 MORNING SESSION  Community Paint-out / Write-out! Lunch will be followed by a ‘weaving’ of special 12x12 paintings with multiple artists involved in the 12x12 fundraiser.

We Thank Our Donors!

The Sedona Arts Center has been changing lives for more than 50 years! Founded in 1958, the Sedona Arts Center has been the foundation of art education in Northern Arizona for more than half a century. It’s first (and current) home was in the Jordan family’s apple packing barn. A lot has changed since then. We’ve grown and expanded, but the Art Barn remains at the heart of the organization. As a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization we still work to fulfill the same mission:

Our Mission The Sedona Arts Center is a nonprofit educational institution dedicated to nurturing creative discovery, learning and sharing through arts education and artistic development.
