Sedona Arts Center’s Guide to Creative Opportunities Spring/Summer 2016

Be Bold. Stay Centered. Get Creative. A Welcome from Eric Holowacz, Executive Director

BOARD OF DIRECTORS Kath Gilliam, President Holli Ploog, Vice President James Peterson, Treasurer Lewis Guthrie, Secretary Pam Frazier John Heyer Kathy Levin Sonya Malkhassian Dennis Ott

STAFF Eric Holowacz Executive Director Liz Gregg Finance Manager Vince Fazio Director, School of the Arts

In 1958, in the small town that was then Sedona, some very visionary people decided that our community needed a creative hub. They were artists, sculptors, civic leaders, educators, business owners and—whether they knew it or not—our town’s pioneers in cultural development.

A few years later, they turned an apple packing warehouse into the Art Barn, and set the pace for community arts programming in Northern Arizona. Decade by decade, Sedona Arts Center blossomed beneath the ubiquitous red rocks and quiet canyon trails. Thousands of artists, educators, friends and neighbors began investing in the idea of a more creative community. And then they built one. With the fruits of their labor, Sedona learned how to express itself, how to reflect its sense of place, and how to support the creative process. Ideas were shared, and film, music, theatre, and revelry found a regular home at the Art Barn. New facilities and organizations followed, taking Sedona from the prosaic to the poetic. Cultural elements from near and far began to define Sedona as an extraordinary point on the map. Artists, pilgrims, thinkers, and energy seekers took refuge in this growing creative community.

Then and now, the active ingredient has always been you—the people of the Verde Valley who support the arts, explore the creative process, and make our unique culture come alive around us. Sedona Arts Center proceeds from your legacy of fearless programming, diverse arts education activities, community investment, and wildly creative gatherings. Because of you, the Art Barn is now a robust campus. The classrooms, gallery, theater, event spaces, and ceramics studio are activated year-round, and serve thousands of people in search of artistic development and genuine community.

What’s Inside

Our once quiet town, still hidden among the towering red rocks and riparian watersheds, has grown up around us. And that shared cultural development ethic, born almost 60 years ago, remains intact to this day. With a nod to our founders, and an eye to the future, Sedona Arts Center’s board and staff have a few favors to ask: First, help us continue building this unique creative community. Bring your ideas and projects for the coming year. Propose an event or new collaboration. Consider our organization as your creative platform, a resource, a laboratory, a place to kindle your creative spark. Because we are.

Fine Art Gallery Each year, the Arts Center welcomes over 30,000

people into our Fine Art Gallery in Uptown Sedona. Many of them, whether residents or tourists, go home with a part of creative Sedona to add to their collection. Over 110 local artists are represented here, and their new works are constantly being added as the paintings, sculpture, jewelry, and craft objects find new homes. “I wish I had started here first,” is the most often heard comment by gallery goers. “This is the best place to learn about local artists and collect their work,” is another. Art lovers from Northern Arizona and visitors from around the world have learned that Sedona Arts Center is the best source of contemporary and traditional local art. Adding to that for 2016, our gallery staff have developed the Art Collecting Advisory. This free service provides hands on research and information for those wanting to buy and collect original art — objects made in and reflective of Sedona. Gallery staff are available to educate buyers and new collectors, discuss special commissions, assist with the installation and presentation of art in home, and arrange private tours with artist studios and local galleries. It’s a simple way to enhance the promotion of local artists and encourage people to support our creative community.

Open Daily 10 am to 5 pm SedonaArtsCenter.org

Insiders and art lovers also know that the First Friday Gallery Tour brings an exciting excuse to visit the Arts Center and explore the town. From 5 pm to 8 pm the monthly open house features dozens of galleries, and a free trolley between our campus, Tlaquepaque, Hillside, and participating destinations. Fresh works of local art are celebrated at every stop, and artists are on hand to tell you about their work. Last but not least, if you are a practicing artist interested in our Fine Art Gallery, consider applying to become a juried member of Sedona Arts Center. We are always looking for high-quality, interesting, original works to consider. Contact us for details on the application and portfolio process. And keep in mind that we also welcome proposals for special visual arts projects, future exhibitions, and community collaborations at any time. Start here first, and consider us your source for original art and new creative development.

Art on Demand

Opportunities for instant creative private and group lessons Here at the Art Barn, we always get asked on the spur of the moment “What workshops and classes can I take this week?” For those who haven’t planned ahead—residents, visitors, and drop-in explorers—the Arts Center now has an answer: Let us arrange a special Art on Demand session, instructor, venue, and materials included. We’ve partnered with over a dozen wonderful local teaching artists to offer classes on demand any time, any place for individuals or small groups. See page 7 for details. Start with a Pink Jeep tour, creekside lunch at L’Auberge, some indie cinema at the Mary D. Fisher Theatre, and that otherworldly hike up Bell Rock or Soldier’s Pass. Then let Sedona Arts Center provide a one-of-a-kind creative afternoon or evening with some of our community’s best artists. Craft dialogues from the heart with theatre director Kate Hawkes. Explore ceramics and raku firing with master potter Dennis Ott and Out of the Smoke. Get creative with painter Libby Caldwell and make your own highly visual handmade journal. Add to your photographic powers with local image-maker Larry Lindahl. Contact our office to find out what else is at the ready. We think these short-order opportunities are perfect for families, bridal parties, corporate teams, tour groups, or anybody wanting to experience the creative side of Sedona. And you will too.

Verde Valley Artist Residency Pilot Projects A New Experiment in Creative Community-building

Shhhhh. Please keep this quiet for now, but the Arts Center has a dream to explore the guest-host relationship with artists, creative producers, and cultural managers. We see a town that hosts a steady stream of visiting artists, supports collaborative projects with local partners, and fosters new ideas shared from around the world. We envision creative people finding a temporary home here, their ideas shared with us, and our town becoming a true platform for 21st century cultural development. It is still early-stage, but remarkable partnerships are being forged with Verde Valley School, private property owners, faraway arts organizations, and American creative leaders who are eager to join us in this experiment. Keep it quiet, but this summer, we will begin the trial stage and host visiting artists and producers. Sedona Arts Center, and our bold and fearless partners, will connect our guests with landscapes, heritage, local Native America sites and culture, organizations, schools, and an otherworldly night sky. 5

Perspective & Illusion

Emphasizing Abstraction

May 13–15

February 19–21

Illusion is the magic of art, while perspective is the organization of form and space from one unique point of view. In this 3 day workshop you will learn how to combine these powerful techniques to create stunning results. Artist, Kurt Wenner will cover a variety of hands-on exercises.

Working in the studio from reproductions including older and 20th century masters, we’ll move through a guided series of exercises to understand that abstraction - composition with color and shape - is THE foundation, the great engine behind all painting.

Drawing Form in Space

Visual Dreaming in the Life Studio

May 17–19

February 23–25

In this workshop, you will learn that in the Renaissance the structure of drawing was a specific visual language that is still available for us to use. You will learn that you can design drawings using this elegant and controlled language of form, proportion, light and space.

This 3 day workshop approaches working from ‘life’ through the graphic priorities of ‘painting’ as opposed to anatomy or any ideas about ‘how to’ paint the figure as in neoclassical ateliers. For us, the presence of the ‘model’ will serve as a shifting and relative point of reference.

The Magic of the Ordinary

May 9–12

May 13–15

May 20–22

Jan’s experience and enthusiasm create an atmosphere of fun and spontaneity, inspiring new directions and discovery through innovative combinations of design and materials. By combining aggressive textures and unusual mediums with various “raw” materials in the abstract painting, we get surprising results.

Learn to make water look wet, reflective and splashy! With intimate woodsy creeks as our model, we’ll study water in motion and its glassy reflections. Photo and sketching from life on day one lead to studio techniques demonstrating solutions to various puzzles with which the artist is faced when painting this stunning, fascinating subject!

We’ll start with excursions to a couple of different venues on the first day. You will learn unusual techniques for gathering meaningful personal material from everyday scenes using all your senses as well as your journal, sketchbook and camera. Then in the studio we’ll learn to translate our material into oil paintings that capture the essence of the experience.

The Soul of the Artist

May 23–27

June 8–10

September 18–22

This workshop pushes you out of your safe zone and into a brand new, looser, abstract direction. Drawing, painting and collaging the contemporary nude, you will learn how to paint the freestyle abstract figure. You will also learn the 12 Design Compositions for a successful painting. Tuition includes model fees.

Abstract painting is an inspired conversation. You speak to your painting through visualization, mark-making, and choice. Your painting speaks to you through its language of color harmony, spatial depth, composition, and integrity. Julie, an award-winning abstract artist, will guide you through this process to create meaningful and powerful abstracts.

Jeanne believes that there is an artist in everyone and imagination is the key, that people love to share their stories and paintings are a way to do that without words. Although many techniques will be demonstrated, Jeanne relies heavily on the emotional impact of her work and shows artists how to tap into their own unique message

Plein Air Legacy Event at Tlaquepaque This spring we are delighted to present a new plein air event, PALET – Plein Air Legacy

Event at Tlaquepaque. Works created during the PALET event will exemplify the compositional dynamic of artists painting directly from life with a variety of styles and mediums. Artists will use no cameras for the production of work in this festival and embrace the legacy of truly painting in the moment. The public is invited to walk the open air plazas and artful gardens of Tlaquepaque to witness firsthand the process as paintings are created throughout the weekend by our participating artists. Landscape as well as figurative painting with staged live models will be an integral part of the PALET experience for both the artists and visitors. The First Friday Opening Reception on June 3 from 5:00 – 8:00 pm will feature existing work from the artist’s studios. As the event evolves, the Main Exhibition Tent will feature new work created in and around the beautiful buildings and landscape of Tlaquepaque as the focal point for the artwork. Color, Light, Shadow, Translucency - These are the ingredients that we will work with to create a beautiful painting for you to take home. Our subject will be flowers and using the glazing technique we will apply thin layer upon layer of oil paint to achieve the depth and translucency associated with all things in nature.

Get to know your brushes and how they can work for you, with a bolder and looser approach to painting. If you want to loosen up and learn to build your skills of observation, this crash course is for you. Learn how simple shapes and a limited palette of color, can help build a landscape. Students will leave with small studies and a finished painting.

In this 1-day workshop you will go beyond the basics and dive into apps, technique and editing with your iPhone, iPad (mini/pro, etc). Learn master techniques, use some of the top apps, accessories and tools to capture the very best photos and videos using only your iPhone! Take this hands-on crash course to further enhance your skills, share socially and learn how to sell your work!

Creative Community and Unimagined Territories Join Us in Making the Most Beautiful Creative Place on Earth There are four things that will define Sedona Arts Center

in the 21st century: Community Outreach, Creative Placemaking, Artistic Development, and Cultural Celebration. The driving goal of our efforts—past, present, and future—is a more interesting, expressive, and creative Sedona. Here’s a look at our blueprint for the year ahead... First, the Arts Center will strengthen our core programming with expanded classes and arts education, more robust gallery programming, and innovative projects like the Art of Recycling, 12 x 12, Loving Bowls, and a new Plein Air Legacy weekend in June. Then, we’ll add a stronger outreach and scholarship focus to bring the arts to more of our community. And for our generous members, our staff and artists will continue working hard to develop exciting and enchanting creative experiences. Beyond that, with the help of generous patrons and sponsors, our board is researching potential improvements and expansion possibilities for our historic campus. We’d love to increase teaching space, better equip the theater studio, landscape the public space around the Art Barn, and enhance our entire physical plant with technology, security, and accessibility. Our 21st century Arts Center will be fearless in exploring bold and innovative program partnerships. This year we will lay the groundwork for a Sedona Artists-in-Residence program, and begin stewarding new collaborations with cultural institutions and creative people from around the world. We’ve been a quiet, hidden gem for too long, and the world should know about Sedona’s creative community and the extraordinary environment we share. We will invite and host cultural forces from San Francisco to Chicago to Helsinki to Beijing—and then connect them with our own cultural identity and sense of place.

Finally, our future will depend on local partnerships, and strengthening capacity with friends here at home: Sedona International Film Festival, Red Earth Theatre, Sedona Arts Festival, Chamber Music Sedona, Sedona Library, and others. Behind the scenes, our organization is expanding arts education opportunities at Monument Valley High School, exploring arts education projects with Sedona Recycles, collaborating with L’Auberge de Sedona, Tlaquepaque Arts & Crafts Village, and hoping to grow our offerings during the First Friday Gallery Tours.

And we are now working more closely with the City of Sedona, Verde Valley School, visionary property owners, major donors, and civic organizations to ensure a vibrant and healthy cultural ecosystem. Together, we celebrate this wonderful creative community, incubate ideas and projects, and guide Sedona into unimagined territory. Some amazing new arts, culture, and heritage opportunities await.

We thank you for joining us.

Join Us as Member, Patron, or Volunteer Here at the Art Barn everything we do is powered by hundreds of annual members, patrons and sponsors, and a wonderful cadre of volunteers. In fact, the past 60 years would not have been possible without them— and our staff, board, and artists invite you to join us to make the next six decades even more exciting and vibrant. To the right are some ways that you can support Sedona Arts Center and get involved in our mission and creative community. If you have any questions, our staff are happy to discuss any of these possibilities with you.

ANNUAL MEMBERSHIP

Our annual members are the bedrock of Sedona Arts Center. With just a $50/year donation, you can join them and help our nonprofit thrive in 2016. Contributions at the $100 level or above include membership in over 800 museums and cultural facilities, through the North American Reciprocal Museum Association. A few of the other benefits of membership include invitations to special events and behind the scenes opportunities, exhibition and co-op projects for practicing artists, special member rates on our classes, discounts on purchases in our Fine Art Gallery, and free professional and technical development opportunities.

PATRON SOCIETY MEMBERSHIP

This year, we’ve launched a new membership category for local philanthropists and major donors. The Arts Center’s Patron Circle, for annual charitable giving of $1000 or more, includes special receptions and events, complementary Patron Circle workshop offerings, hands on support from our Art Collecting Advisory, use of our facilities for special events, and a surprise or two throughout the year. If you think you might be our next Patron Circle member, contact us to learn more, You’ll be supporting our future in a big way!

ARTS BUSINESS CIRCLE MEMBERSHIP

Sedona Arts Center has built strong relationships with our business community and local corporate citizens. This year, we’ve created a new category—the Arts Business Circle—to encourage membership from local small businesses, the tourism and hospitality industry, professional practices, and the for-profit community around us. For all our business members, we promise new partnership ideas and community projects that support your products and services. Business membership begins at $250/year, with unique sponsorship opportunities at the $2,500 and above level.

PROGRAM SPONSORSHIP

Our staff work hard to plan and deliver hundreds of workshops, events, and cultural opportunities for the community. We are blessed with a diverse group of funding partners—the City of Sedona, Kling Family Foundation, Arizona Commission on the Arts, Arizona Community Foundation, and others. Our organization also works together with Bashas’, BMO Harris Bank, L’Auberge de Sedona, Tlaquepaque Arts & Crafts Village, and other wonderful sponsors to expand our creative reach. For gifts and in-kind support of between $2,500 and $25,000, we work to connect generous sponsors with core programming like Sedona Plein Air Festival, our School of Art, Fine Art Gallery and exhibitions, and community outreach projects—and develop custom benefits to involve and showcase our sponsors.

PLANNED BEQUESTS & LEGACY GIVING

To ensure strong long-term support, our board and staff have begun working to establish an active Legacy Giving Program. If you are interested in supporting our mission with a planned bequest, charitable remainder trust, donation of appreciated securities or real estate—or just want to work with the Arts Center to learn more about these things—we are ready to plan with you. With special gifts, donors can honour a loved one or mentor, improve and name a facility, ensure long-lasting scholarships and arts education programming, help us build a permanent endowment, or foster expansion into new locations and communities. If you’d like to enrich our 21st century organization, we’d love to talk.

BECOME AN ARTS CENTER VOLUNTEER

22

On any given day, the Arts Center might have 3 or 4 volunteers helping make our organization tick. They greet you in the gallery, prepare exhibitions and workshops, add culinary flair to our reception, fix the plumbing, transport art and equipment, and so much more. If you’ve got a skill to lend, or a desire to help Sedona Arts Center as a volunteer, please let us know. We always welcome new volunteers into our team.

Introducing:

The Sedona Ukulele Posse! Late last year, we discovered the unstoppable musical force that is the Jerome Ukulele Orchestra. We met the founder and creative impresario, Tommy Anderson, and dreamed up an idea to extend his community music-making across the Verde Valley to our town. This Spring, under Tommy’s leadership, the Sedona Ukulele Posse will be born. Sedona Arts Center will host two-hour song-learning sessions every month, and see where the music takes us. Stay tuned for an announcement of dates, costs, and instructions on how to begin your ukulele collection—and find a new groove at the Art Barn!
