Art is Self Discovery. The Sedona Art Retreats

offer a unique tour of self-discovery as you explore a world of creative possibilities. Sedona is known for three things: its remarkable landscape, its art-colony atmosphere and as a place for spiritual retreat. The Sedona Arts Center has wrapped these elements into a unique package where art and self-discovery fuse, creating a life-changing experience.

Watercolor Journaling

A Visual Arts Retreat

This is less a how-to-paint course than it is a lesson in training our minds to be still and our eyes to truly see. Drawing with pencil and pen and painting with simple watercolor sets, our exercises will be oriented toward exploration and discovery as a way to engage life rather than as a “serious art-making” project. In this manner we will find beauty all around us, but not necessarily a beauty that matches our predetermined expectations. Tuition: $375

Over a three-day period you will experience six different art mediums, each with their own creative energy and each taught by a different artist. Artistic journaling, ceramics, collage, photography, life mask-making and a talisman project will cross-pollinate to become a path of unique connections that is different for each individual. All materials are included. Tuition: $675

Join Sedona-based author, photographer and book designer

A spark of creativity exists within everyone. This transformative workshop uses writing as a tool to help you locate, embrace and utilize your own creative gift. We begin by examining the question of desire and how we can utilize our unique passions. Next, we turn to the fear of desire and the obstacles that prevent us from being freely creative. Our focus then turns to embracing desire, acceptance of our nature, what we wish to manifest in the world and pathways for giving birth to that personal vision. Tuition: $425

Photography, Writing and Design

Larry Lindahl for a weekend retreat of storytelling through your own creative photography, writing and book design. Practicing simple techniques to deepen appreciation of the natural world, participants will weave their photography with observational journaling to record the introspective story of their experience. By the end of the retreat each person will have completed a keepsake book to celebrate their reciprocal relationship with the natural world. Tuition: $505

Sedona’s Fall Colors

Bill Cramer Oct 11–12, 2014

Shelby Keefe Oct 15–17, 2014

Betty Carr Oct 27–31, 2014

In this intensive weekend workshop we will learn the advantages of plein air painting, various approaches to working on-site and how to efficiently compose and complete plein air paintings. Emphasis will be placed on using thumbnail sketches, limited palettes and the thoughtful use of colors, values, shapes, edges and textures.

One of the biggest challenges for plein air painters is to narrow down infinite amounts of detail and express the essence of a scene. Students will learn strategies for simplification, value accuracy, compositional uniqueness, and Shelby’s technique for applying complimentary colors to the white canvas as an underpainting.

Learn to capture the beauty of light in either watercolor or oils! Each day of this week-long workshop begins with a demonstration covering tools, techniques, brushwork and problem solving. She emphasizes organization and simplification of values, value-color relationships, edges, movement and mass to create dynamic, coherent compositions.

Plein Air Painting

Robert Burridge Oct 27–29, 2014

Jill Carver Nov 1–5, 2014

Timothy Horn Nov 15–17, 2014

See for yourself why painting outdoors was (and still is) so popular. Students will learn paint sketching outdoors, then finish up in the studio using all the principles of painting trees, clouds, meadows, mountains, water and abstract landscapes. But be prepared to paint looser, bolder, freer, lighter and more intuitively.

More than anything else, plein air painting is about harvesting information and ideas. Then we return to the studio to explore, edit, experiment and refine ideas. Days 1 and 2 will be spent outdoors; day 3 will be lecture/ demo using my own work; days 4 and 5 will be spent in the studio. Evenings will include dialog, analysis, critique and camaraderie.

Students will explore and paint three very different venues: the high desert vistas of Sedona, Jerome’s Victorian neighborhoods and the very special Gold King Mine, junkyard and ghost town. Instruction will focus primarily on conveying strong sunlight, clarify and pushing values achieving clean color and utilizing patterns to create strong compositions.

Often, colors cannot be matched to what is seen in nature or a photograph and luminosity gets lost. We will work with the transparent element of water-based mediums.

Your field kit of tools includes graphite and watercolor pencils to be explored within a 4 x 6-inch sketchbook, all included in the class fee.

The Raku Figure

The Egg Tempera Portrait

Alabaster Sculpture

Lorri Acott Nov 7–9, 2014

Koo Schadler Nov 10–14, 2014

Alvin Marshall Nov 17–21, 2014

Participants in this workshop will learn a new way of working with clay. Using fiberclay (regular ceramic clay impregnated with fibers) allows for elongated, fragile forms. The class will culminate with an actual raku firing and each student will leave with a finished sculpture. This will be a fun, handson, experimental experience.

Because of its luminosity and fine line work, egg tempera is an ideal medium for rendering the human face. In this workshop you will learn every step for developing a portrait in egg tempera. Koo Schadler explains the traditional Old Master palette used to develop flesh tones. She will also work on a painting of her own, so you can see firsthand how she develops her portraits.

Kelli Klymenko Nov 8–9, 2014

Scott Stulberg Nov 15–16, 2014

In today’s technological world even professional photographers and artists recognize smart phones as useful photographic tools. Learn the basics of framing and editing to move beyond the snapshot and into the realm of stunning photography that you can share with ease. Students need to know how to use their phone’s features. Some apps are required.

Learn the ins and outs of self-publishing your art, words and photography and create e-books for print-on-demand and traditional printing processes. Compare the different types of publishing and learn how to market your books for little or no money using social media. Tuition includes your computer lab fee.

Photoshop is a photographer’s best friend and this hands-on workshop is designed for those who would like to broaden their understanding of it. Instruction will cover the digital workflow with lectures and exercises covering how to process, adjust, correct, and manipulate captured images. A variety of tools and techniques will be explored.

Join Dennis Ott, head of the ceramics department, to explore the world of clay through hand-building, slab constructions and extruding. On the last day of class there will be a wheel demonstration. All materials and lab fees are included in tuition. Students will complete three works of art from construction through glazing. Meets Tuesdays and Thursdays 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Glazing is the application of thin layers of oil paint to achieve the translucent appearance of nature as light passes through the paint and bounces back at the viewer. Meets Tuesdays and Thursdays, 9 a.m.–Noon.

We Thank Our Donors!

The Sedona Arts Center has been changing lives for more than 50 years! Founded in 1958, the Sedona Arts Center has been the foundation of art education in Northern Arizona for more than half a century. It’s first (and current) home was in the Jordan family’s apple packing barn. A lot has changed since then. We’ve grown and expanded, but the Art Barn remains at the heart of the organization. As a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization we still work to fulfill the same mission:

Our Mission The Sedona Arts Center is a nonprofit educational institution dedicated to nurturing creative discovery, learning and sharing through arts education and artistic development.
