GET TO KNOW

ANGEL PARKER

BY NICHE INTERIORS, WWW.NICHEINTERIORS.COM PHOTOGRAPHY BY: R. BRAD KNIPSTEIN BY EMILY KLINE PHOTOGRAPHY BY BOBBY QUILLARD Angel Parker, can next be seen in the coming series “American Crime Story: The People v. O.J. Simpson” on FX. Angel is a scene stealer as famed celebrity attorney ‘Shawn Chapman,’ one of O.J. Simpson’s ‘Dream Team’ lawyers. When Angel isn’t acting, she resides in Los Angeles with her husband Eric and two beautiful children, James (10) and Naomi (3), and their Boston Terrier, Bruce. We were lucky enough to sit down with Angel Parker and learn about her and her families style and dynamic. HOW ARE YOU AND YOUR HUSBAND, ERIC HANDLING YOUR BUSY SCHEDULES WITH YOUR TWO KIDS?

We are a great team and balance each other very well. Each evening we sort of synchronize watches by asking, “What’s your day tomorrow?” We then figure out who is taking which child to school, friends’ house, etc. Even the dog’s schedule! We plan it all the evening before and on very busy days, when we are both working, we rely on fantastic babysitters and friends. It truly takes a village. WHAT DOES ‘STYLE’ MEAN TO YOU AS YOU RAISE YOUR FAMILY?

I believe in putting your best foot forward each day. When you look good, you feel good. I don’t think that clothes have to be

expensive, but they should fit properly and be in good condition. HAVE YOU NOTICED IF YOUR CHILDREN HAVE DEFINED THEMSELVES AS INDIVIDUALS AND EMBODIED THEIR OWN KIND OF STYLE?

My son is an athlete and sports fan, so he likes a lot of active wear and hoodies. He’s also a fan of cool sneakers. My daughter is a classic girl and loves dresses and bright colors. She definitely likes to pick her outfits in the morning. I’ve learned to give her 3 choices to make the mornings run smoother. I still have final approval to make sure they are dressed appropriately for the day, but I pick my battles, and always love to see their creativity. 19

THAT’S LIFE

WHAT HAS CHANGED SINCE GROWING YOUR FAMILY?

Spontaneity! We always have to plan every day. My favorite days are the rare ones, with no plans.

20

THAT’S LIFE

WHAT HAS STAYED THE SAME?

Our humor and fun. We laugh a lot and love to listen to music and watch movies. They are now just more PG rated. NAME ONE THING YOU LOVE TO KEEP IN THE HOUSE?

Coffee and Hot Chocolate. That starts a lot of mornings and ends a lot of days. Nothing better. HOW HAS BOTH OF YOUR STYLES CHANGED?

I love fashion, but also like to be comfortable and warm. That’s a fun challenge. Some days fashion wins, but when it can all meet up, I’m a happy girl. DID YOU WISH YOU KNEW SOMETHING BEFORE YOUR FAMILY CAME, THAT YOU CAN SHARE?

How fun it can be! Also, the power of saying no. I set more boundaries, for the benefit of my family, than I used to. Motherhood has made me a stronger, more direct woman who doesn’t spend valuable time doing something I don’t want to. With work, husband, and kids, I only spend my free time doing something I value or with people I value. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE CLOTHING LINE FOR KIDS AT THE MOMENT?

Most of my kids’ clothes come from affordable stores like Gap or Zara. I’m

also a big fan of kids resale stores. I trade their clothes and toys for ‘new’ items. I just found a great leather jacket for Naomi for trade! For a special occasion, I may go to Nordstrom or Fred Segal. They carry beautiful, quality pieces. NAME THREE BEAUTY PRODUCTS YOU CANNOT LIVE WITHOUT?

Cocoa Butter lotion, Rodan and Fields skin care, and Apricot Scrub in the shower. WHAT DO YOU LIKE DO AS A FAMILY ON WEEKENDS AND OR HOLIDAYS?

We love to take walks in our neighborhood and veg out on the couch. Most of our travel is to visit family. My family is from South Carolina and New Orleans and has family reunions every year in a different host city. We love to go and add a week to visit my husband’s family in St.Louis or Chicago. It’s always an epic summer trip and our favorite time of year. Holidays trade off between our family’s and in-laws, but Santa always comes to my house! We love our kids to wake up in their own beds, but then usually head somewhere fun. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE CLOTHING LINE OR DESIGNER? I love Vince,

James Perse, and Marc Jacobs. They always make me feel smart, elegant, and comfortable!

FOR THE HOME

First time parents tasked Niche Interiors with creating a graphic, hip, and colorful baby boys room that could grow with their son. We opted for neutral wallpaper and rug, and furniture pieces that wouldn’t feel too precious in a few years. The dresser has a changing table attachment that can be removed down the line, the modern crib can be converted to a toddler bed, and the bench has plenty of toy storage. The rustic wood floor lamp and letters provide plenty of boyish charm. Saturated pops of turquoise and orange were added in the pillows, pouf, and accessories/artwork, which can be easily changed down the road.

THAT’S LIFE

7 RULES TO FIGHTING FAIR WITH YOUR TODDLER BY JUDITH WRIGHT AUTHOR OF THE HEART OF THE FIGHT WWW.JUDITHWRIGHT.COM

Who says you shouldn’t cry over spilled milk? Let’s face it, whenever something doesn’t go your toddler’s way, from a spilled sippy cup to an itchy sweater, a meltdown or argument can easily occur, and usually does. But one of the biggest challenges when dealing with toddler tantrums is that their frontal lobe—the part of the brain responsible for impulse control, regulating emotions, and anticipating consequences—is not fully formed, so you can’t expect them to process and understand things the way that you do. Now that doesn’t mean you can’t help them practice the behaviors you’d like to see down the road. When a fight breaks out, here’s how to teach your child to fight fair, (a skill you’ll want them to have when they hit their teenage years!) RULE #1 Accentuate the positive A little encouragement goes a long way. Did your toddler, who normally has a meltdown, engage with you instead? Great! Underline it and celebrate it. Every time your child does something that pleases you, does what you ask, shows values that matter to you—whether it’s getting dressed on time, sharing toys, paying attention, or putting their toys away—acknowledge him. Focusing on the positives makes a big difference for both of you. He’ll feel important, cared about, and valued.

38

RULE #2 Minimize the negative What parent hasn’t felt pushed over the edge in a moment of weakness? When we feel like we’ve lost control we resort to behavior we wouldn’t otherwise endorse. We may call our child a spoiled brat, yell, inflict an over-the-top punishment or, use ultimatums that we never intend to follow through on, like, “If you bite Joey one more time then I’ll never let you go to school again!” While this is normal, the more we can minimize negative interactions the better. Practice giving yourself a quick time-out before you react. Even better, decide logical consequences ahead of time (take a toy away for a day, leave the restaurant after three reminders to behave appropriately, etc.) and tell your child beforehand so you can implement the consequence without having to think up a punishment in the heat of the moment. RULE #3: No one gets more than 50% of the blame It’s so easy to make the other person completely wrong or to want them to admit that it was totally their fault. In reality, everyone is 50% to blame for whatever went wrong. Maybe your toddler made the first move that set off the fight, but your response caused your interaction to escalate. The more you can learn to own your part, the more your toddler learns to do that themselves. Taking responsibility often stops a fight in its tracks so you can plan how you will both do it differently in the future.

RULE #4: Your toddler is taking 100% responsibility for her satisfaction, are you? You almost have to admire it. Your child will try anything to get his or her way— whether it’s begging, throwing tantrums, or going to Daddy when Mommy refuses. Taking 100% responsibility for your happiness and satisfaction is where most parents falter.Do you hate your morning routines because you’re constantly harping at everyone to get out of the door? Then take back your morning. Let everyone know that your happiness is going to be the point of focus and that the family is going to work toward that aim. RULE #5: Express and agree with the truth, always Maybe your toddler says something that is true in the heat of the battle. Are you willing to stop and acknowledge that truth or are you just trying to win the fight? Maybe they called you “mean” when you really were being that way. Acknowledging a truth can move a disagreement forward. RULE #6: Fight FOR, not against What are you really fighting for? Is there something bigger you are trying to get to happen? Do you just need a moment of quiet?

Make sure that you aren’t just trying to "win" the fight with your toddler, because that will just throw you into an endless loop of 3-year-old back and forth. So stop for a moment. Take a breath. Think about what you really want out of this fight and make sure you fight for your desired outcome and not against your little one. RULE #7: Assume good will The people close to us can usually get to us the most, even our four-year old darling. Because young children don’t have the same level of abstract reasoning that we do, it’s easy to paint them as a tyrant. But when toddlers break down, it’s usually because they have exhausted their best methods to get what they want. Remember, your toddler is not trying to do you in, they just don’t have better ways yet to cope with feelings of frustration. So remember, even if your child isn’t quite ready to be on board with all of these skills, you’re providing a model for the future and building skills of productive conflict to use in all of your relationships!

FOR THE HOME

BUGGED OUT

BY HALO DESIGN INTERIORS WWW.HALODESIGNINTERIORS.COM

40

FOR THE HOME

This room was designed for a boy who has a love of bugs and creepy crawlies. We found a bug wallpaper with black background and white insects on it. Our original idea was to powder coat the scaffolding elements in white, but the client asked us to switch to the black, thereby making the scheme more dramatic. The accent yellow was added to the ceiling and cushions as our client has a particular love of vibrant/neon colours. The mezzanine flyover platform was created as a play zone but also as an extra bed for the many friends and family they expected to have visiting them during weekends and holidays. We had a bespoke mattress made to fit the whole space and had it covered in bug fabric to match the wallpaper. The ladder up, leads to a hole in the platform so that it is accessed from the inside rather than outside. We experimented with the idea of a fireman’s pole but then thought the ladder would be safer! We also had a scaffolding desk made on the other side of the room, with sandblasted scaffolding wood, as a desk top material and for shelving, which was given a dramatic black paint finish. Industrial style clip-on lights were added too.

THAT’S LIFE

ARE YOU BREASTFEEDING? BY LAUREN PATTERSON FROM WWW.MADMAXMUM.COM | FOLLOW @___LAURENKATE

T

his is the one question I get asked almost daily! The answer? No. I am no longer breastfeeding and no, I don’t need to hear a lecture about it. I simply can’t do it anymore, so I’m not. That’s it.

I’ve found that since I stopped breastfeeding the world got so opinionated when it came to how you parent your child. Social media wasn’t so judgmental when I had my first, so when I had to stop breastfeeding, I just changed to formula without anyone giving a shit. Now days, the minute I change to formula is the moment I turn into a horrible parent. I had to stop breastfeeding because my milk simply dried up. This is exactly how it happened with my first. My mom could only breastfeed myself and my two sisters for maybe a month, so she wasn’t surprised when it happened to me. I had tried everything. Teas, biscuits, expressing, vitamins - you name it, I’ve probably tried it. I tried so hard to breastfeed for as long as I possibly could, and if that meant it only happened for 7 weeks, so be it. My child would get so hysterical when I forced him to feed on my boob because there simply was no milk there. He was happy when I started him on formula.

Just because I am no longer breastfeeding, my baby is only 8 weeks old and has to drink formula, does not mean that I am a bad parent. It does not mean that I don’t want to give my son the best. It does not mean that he isn’t healthy, or that he won’t be intelligent when he grows up. It does not mean that he will live a shorter life, or that I am an unfit parent. It does not mean that I failed. You know why? Because he is still being fed the best that I can possibly give him. I absolutely love breastfeeding and wish that I could have done it for so much longer, but I don’t go around hating on breastfeeding women simply because they can do something that I can’t. So why should breastfeeding women hate on formula feeders? I just don’t understand. We should stand together because we are doing the same thing and that is raising.

47

THE HARD PARTS OF PARENTING BY ABBIE SCHILLER, PARENTING EXPERT AND CEO OF THE MOTHER COMPANY WWW.THEMOTHERCO.COM

I

just put my two year old to bed after an epic hour-long, hysterical tantrum. After a napless day, he announced at dinner it was his turn to put the napkins on the table. I had already placed them. Then there was the scary silence before the scream. Then the scream. Then the push of the plate away – which actually knocked the entire plate (rice and all) onto the dining room floor. Then I carried the screaming child up to bed. There was screaming so loud I heard ringing. There was head bashing, first his head against his crib and then his head against my chin. I was pinched – that was a new one.

48

THAT’S LIFE

Helplessly clutched in an emotional storm, he was spiraling downward. I tried to reason. I tried to hold him. I tried to walk away. I tried everything reasonable. But there was no “reasonable.” After 40 minutes, I wanted to give-up and let him deal with it alone, exhausted. My son was completely, entirely, 100% outof-control and all I could do was ride it out and think about how very difficult parts of parenting are. Moments like these bring me to my knees. But staying on my knees serves no one. I can’t quit – there is no quitting. If I left him alone in this room – he would have become more terrified and I would have contributed to it. We had to get through it – even if we both came out of it wounded a little. There was no light at the end of the tunnel. No hindsight in that moment. There are many kinds of “hard parts” in parenting. Defiance is another one. Nothing presses my buttons like a defiant child. Once, after a particularly difficult stand-off with my (then) three year old, she announced “Well I’m not your friend anymore!” and I shot back (totally at my wits end) “Yeah? Well I’m not your friend either!” That’s when my husband stepped in and sent us both to our rooms for a little cooling off. It was a first, and a last. Part of the myth of parenting that persists is if we’re getting these behaviors from our children, we aren’t doing everything right. It just isn’t true – and only adds to the pressure we feel during the hard parts. Parenting can be tough. It’s really unavoidable. I often wonder if we would be so aware of the highs if it weren’t for the lows. I take comfort in my own made-up fact that if kids are cooperative 70 – 80 percent of the time, I’m doing an excellent job.

Then there are different kinds of “hard parts” – the parts that make my heart hurt. The time when my baby needed stitches and we had to hold his little head while a doctor sewed his lip. Or a different kind of hard when you say goodbye to your daughter as she leaves for sleep-away camp and realize you won’t hear from her for a few weeks. Hard when you realize you might be failing your kid in some – if not many ways. Hard when you can’t afford the time or thing they most desperately want. If someone had warned me about all these hard parts before I was a parent, I’m sure I would’ve lessened their impact in my mind. Like everything, before I was a parent, parenting would’ve seemed easier – more simple. But these moments are deep and raw and larger-than-life. These hard parts come in unrecognizable shapes and sizes, at unpredictable times. The only thing that lessens them entirely is the immense love we feel for our children, the moments when they reach for your hand. The times they sleep on your chest. When the tantrum ended and sleep finally took over his little body, my son sighed. He lay asleep and peaceful as if nothing happened. But I was there. I had felt its force. I stayed with him. I know what we endured. We endured it together. And we will again.

FOR THE HOME

Just for a

Princess BY DVIRA OVADIA OF DVIRA INTERIORS WWW.DVIRA.COM PHOTOGRAPHY BY STEPHANIE BUCHMAN

Designer Dvira Ovadia recently completed a serene nursery and baby room that is fit for a princess that can grow with her room. Plenty of girly touches adorn this room, yet the pretty pieces are versatile and can work for baby, toddler and even a young girl.

77

While incorporating a lot of classic pieces, like the mirrored dresser, chandelier and silhouette prints, we used the adorning pieces in a contemporary fashion. Keeping the look very clean and contemporary with the warmth of timeless pieces. This girl’s room incorporates all the functions of a child’s room: A sleeping area, a book nook, storage for clothing, shelves for toys and books, and a warm carpet where the child can sit and play.

GREAT BEAUTY HACKS BY: BRITTANY GRAY, FOUNDER OF FANCY FACE INC.

W

e all have those days when we rush out the door with little to no time to spare for our beauty regime. In that case, check out these top ten beauty hacks to help you! 1)Put your mascara on while looking down into a compact. This will help you from getting mascara smudges on the top of your eye lids. Looking downwards into a compact gives you the perfect angle to see your lashes. 2) Apply a lip stain under your lipstick for an all-day, touch up free wear. No need to worry if you still have lip color on. With a great stain, your lip color will stay from AM to PM.

3) Do you always have mascara and eyeliner running down your eyes by the end of the day? Be sure to swipe some translucent powder on top of your concealer to lock your eye makeup in all day. If the makeup under your eyes has not been set with powder, your makeup will be sure to run and crease for a very unpolished, undesirable look. 4) Only apply primer and foundation where you need it. If your tight for time and the majority of your skin is in good shape, only apply foundation and primer to the areas that need it. Under your eyes, around your nose, the center of your forehead and your chin are usually the places with the most breakouts and discoloration. Save your product and let the rest of your skin breathe. 5) Use your bronzer as an eyeshadow. An instant pick-me-up comes from applying a bit of warmth in the crease of your eyes. For those of you who aren't savvy with your makeup brushes, simply use a domed brush and apply some bronzer in the hollows of your eyes rocking back and forth in your crease. No need for a base color, or a highlight under the brow. This trick alone will make your eyes look awake and polished. 6) Out of your favorite eye makeup remover? Look no further than your kitchen cupboard. Coconut oil is a total gem at taking off every last trace of your makeup. Dampen your skin, warm up some

organic, cold-pressed coconut oil in your hands and then massage it into your face and eyes. Using a face cloth, sweep away your makeup from the day. 7) Wanting bigger lips but too nervous to book an appointment at your local Botox and Juviderm clinic? Not a problem at all! Simply pick up a nude/natural lip liner and lightly trace your lips on the outskirts of your natural lip line ever so subtly. In an instant, once your lipstick is applied you will notice your lips look twice the size! Apply some gloss to the center of your pout and you've got the lips you've always dreamed of! 8) Ran out of your favorite brow gel to set those unruly hairs? Reach for an unused tooth brush in your bathroom cupboard and spray on some hairspray to the bristles. Comb the tooth brush through your brows and voila! They will stay all day! 9) Looking to add some rouge to your cheeks but forgot your blush at home? Use a pink or red lipstick and lightly dab a little on to the apples of your cheeks! Blend in circular motions until all the edges are smoothed out. 10) Skin feeling a bit dry looking but no highlighter in sight? Add a bit of clear Chapstick to your cheekbones for an instant dew. With the tips above, you'll be sure to look fabulous no matter what the situation!
