EDITOR’S LETTER
W
elcome to the inaugural issue of Birthmark magazine! I’d like to introduce you to a magazine that is designed to help identify your new self as a parent and how to keep your style and originality moving forward with your children. We’re doing this by bringing a fashion-focused lifestyle magazine to you – the newly bestowed parents. We hope this can be a guide to help style your new identity, your new being and your new life. I, as the former editor-in-chief for our publisher’s fashion magazine, Remark, was entrenched in all the latest trends, beauty products and jewelry. That all changed when a little over a year ago, I, too, became a mother. For a while, I felt I lost my identity, I felt like I really didn’t know myself or my style anymore. I found myself trying to cling to a past where I was more focused on just who I was, but, as any parent can testify, it didn’t matter anymore. From the moment he was born, I was centred around him.
ON THE COVER THE GROWING STYLISH MAGAZINE
The good news? Style is never lost. You can always redefine yourself. You can still live stylishly with a family. Despite all the tears, messes and hectic schedules, there is still time for the things we love makeup, fashion, fitness, decor, and, of course food. Maybe not as much time, but surely enough to find yourself again. Enjoy our launch issue. — Kristie Stoodley-Klajn

8 WAYS YOUR MAN CAN HELP WITH
BREASTFEEDING
T
he world of breastfeeding sounds like a womenonly arena, but there is a lot that your man can do to help with this important, special and sometimes exhausting activity. This can be a team effort and a bonding experience for both parents.

LIFE STYLE
1. SUPPORT The most important thing he can do to help with breastfeeding is to give love, emotional and spiritual support. Breastfeeding isn’t an easy thing to master and may not be possible for some families. Whatever the experience may turn out to be, he can be there to talk about things openly, give loving encouragement and assure you that you are doing an amazing job, regardless of the outcome. 2. PREPARE Whatever your prep routine may be, he can take on these duties. For our daughter, I get her undressed and change her diaper before feeding. This gets her awake, alert and ready to feed. It also saves us from changing her diaper after the feeding, when she’s happily ready to fall asleep. 3. LATCH A proper latch might be the single most important aspect of breastfeeding. If done right, breastfeeding will be painless and more milk will be drawn than if the latch is too shallow. What I do to help with this is support our baby’s positioning. She likes to keep her hands and arms near her mouth, which obstructs feeding. I move her arms into a good position and sometimes I’ll help support her neck so that we can push her into the breast properly when she opens her mouth. 4. ENCOURAGE Babies may be brand new to the world, but they already respond to encouragement. Sometimes our daughter may pull away from a good, deep latch, preferring a shallow one. I find that if we encourage her, telling her she’s doing a good job, she stays latched properly. Of course she doesn’t understand what we’re saying, but hearing the positive tones with which we’re speaking guides her actions.
5. ROUSE Another way he can offer support is keeping baby awake during feeding. It’s normal for babies to get tired and head toward a “milk coma” as they feel satisfied from their meal. But if they haven’t fed enough, he can help keep them awake. I do different things, like stroking baby’s cheek, tickling her feet or hipbone, or playing tug o’ war with one of her arms. 6. HYDRATE It’s important for women to stay hydrated while breastfeeding. I like to make sure she’s got her water cup filled (one with a straw is helpful with her hands being full). 7. FINISH When it’s all over and done, he can be a big help by picking up a hopefully satisfied and sleepy baby, swaddling her or wrapping her in a blanket and laying her down to sleep. If our daughter isn’t sleepy at this point, I might spend a little time swinging, rocking or humming until she gets sleepy. Or if she just wants to be awake for a bit, we’ll spend a little time playing. I might spend some time moving her arms and legs around for exercise, or I might give her a little tummy time. 8. CLEAN If mom is pumping, a final item for him is to help with cleanup. Sometimes I’ll take all the pump parts, wash them and get them ready for the next session. Then I’ll gather the milk containers and place them in the fridge. There’s a lot to breastfeeding and getting it right is important. It takes a lot out of a women, (her body is working hard to produce milk) so she’ll appreciate the help. There aren’t many fathers that have the time away from work to be there at all or during most nursing sessions; but being there at times when it is possible will still make a world of difference. 9

HOW ARE YOU AND MARIO HANDLING YOUR BUSY SCHEDULES WITH GIA AND DOMINIC ? Communication. We always talk through everyone’s schedule, so that we are on the same page.
HOW HAVE BOTH OF YOUR WARDROBES CHANGED? HAVE YOUR STYLES CHANGED AT ALL? We are all about easy. If we aren’t in our workout clothes then it’s a pair of ripped jeans and a t-shirt.
WHAT DOES ‘STYLE’ MEAN TO YOU AS YOU RAISE YOUR FAMILY? We always tell our kids the best kind of style is being courteous and polite. Manners are everything.
DID YOU WISH YOU KNEW SOMETHING BEFORE YOUR FAMILY CAME THAT YOU CAN SHARE? To not sweat the small stuff. Having children makes me realize what’s important.
HAVE YOU NOTICED IF YOUR CHILDREN HAVE DEFINED THEMSELVES AS INDIVIDUALS AND EMBODIED THEIR OWN KIND OF STYLE? From the minute my kids were born, they had their own very distinctive personalities. Gia is a very girly girl who doesn’t mind getting dirty while wearing a tutu, and Dominic is all boy but very gentle and loving. WHAT HAS CHANGED SINCE GROWING YOUR FAMILY? Sleep! What is sleep?! NAME ONE THING YOU LOVE TO KEEP IN THE HOUSE? Tons of baby wipes. My kids are always getting messy!
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE CLOTHING LINE FOR KIDS AT THE MOMENT? Zara, I’m addicted. NAME THREE BEAUTY PRODUCTS YOU CANNOT LIVE WITHOUT? Amazing grace perfume, sunless pro spray tan in a bottle and Shishedo bio performance face cream. WHAT HAS STAYED THE SAME? Only my birthday has stayed the same! ANY PLANS TO HAVE MORE LITTLE ONES? Mario and I would love to have one more little Lopez.

HONOUR THY HUNGER
BY GEORGIE FEAR | ASKGEORGIE.COM
W
hether you call it “intermittent fasting” or just plain “skipping breakfast”, if you want to manage your weight for the rest of your life with sustainable habits (and some semblance of a healthy relationship with food) it’s not doing you any favors. Most importantly, if you’re trying to stop binge eating or stop overeating, honoring your hunger in a reasonable window of time is essential. Feeling hunger for 30-60 minutes before you eat is wise. Pushing it beyond that deliberately, on a regular basis, is often going to work against you.
26
LIFE STYLE
Here’s why you don’t want to go hungry for hours and hours when trying to lose weight: Using your hunger and satisfaction cues tends to work in partnership, and best when done consistently. When you ignore your hunger at selected times you “want to”, and decide to only eat when it’s time, it’s tough to switch gears and stop eating when your body gives you signals of being satisfied. By overriding your physical hunger repeatedly, you keep conditioning that your brain is DECIDING when and how much you get to eat (not your body). If you want to use hunger and satiety signals reliably, you can’t keep undermining them by saying they don’t count if they strike before noon because you read somewhere that skipping breakfast did something good for you. What’s going to actually help you is cementing the neurology of eating when hungry, and not eating when not hungry. Lots of people want to jump onto and grab only that second part, becoming able to not eat when they aren’t hungry – but it’s learned best when you consistently associate hunger with eating. Absence of hunger, absence of eating. Like training a dog, the more consistent you can be, the better your brain will get the picture that hunger and food go together (not stress and food, or boredom and food, just hunger and food), and the sooner that EAT NOW urge will lighten up and bugger off when there is no hunger in the picture. If you ignore hunger, you also tend to ignore satiety. Just happens that way. Interoceptive responsiveness means we strengthen the skill of listening to and heeding body signals, or we strengthen our skills in ignoring them as a whole. If you want to get better at stopping when satisfied, honoring your hunger within an hour of it showing up helps. 27

THE LITTLE DORM BY FERM LIVING $72
We started off with a very neutral base, with a soft beige carpet and drapery mixed with white trims and furniture. I really wanted to give her new daughter something special and I knew that if I showed the client the right pink she would appreciate how gorgeous it could look. Many people associate pink with tacky, but similar to trying to choose the right shade of white, the difference between Barbie doll pink and something tasteful is great. I chose to mix up a soft polka dot with a checkered chair to add texture and bought the pink into the crocheted poufs and butterfly prints on the wall.

FALL ALL OVER THESE MAKEUP TRENDS BY: BRANDIE HOPSTEIN
This season, the trend in makeup is a fusion of chic mixed with a dash of whimsy. BOTTOM’S UP! Bottom liner, your time has finally come. A quick way to get a sultry look without all the extra eye makeup is to line the bottom of your lash line - from inside corner to the outside corner - with a waterproof, smudge-free, long- lasting liner. You can elongate the eyes by extending the
HUE KNEW? The monochromatic beauty look can give a very chic and modern feel to this season’s wardrobe palette, which is bursting with rich colors, patterns and textures. The key is to use nudes and colors in shades that complement each other in tone, tint and shade. You can then play with mixing textures like a glossy lip with a matte eyeshadow and a shimmery cheek, or a shimmery eye with a matte lip and cheek. Nudes and browns are ideal for this look but colors in a monochromatic range can work as well.
DRAMATIC EYES. RICH JEWEL TONES. SEDUCTIVE LASHES. line just a touch past the outside corner and applying waterproof mascara to the bottom lashes. UP IN SMOKE Give smoky eyes a glamorous new twist by using rich jewel tones instead of the usual suspects: black and brown. Try rich colors like sapphire, topaz, rose gold, emerald green, amethyst and bronzed gold.
LET’S HEAR IT FOR THE EYES Bright eyes are a great way to perk up your face during gloomy, cold weather months. Add some brightness to the eyes by placing a light shimmery shadow in the inner and outer corner of the eye. Or you can place a bright shimmery shadow to the lower center of the lid using your finger tip. This gives a nice touch of light even when your eyes are open without being over the top.

ORGANIZE YOUR NURSERY

ne of the biggest requests I receive from my design clients is to incorporate a lot of storage. Babies come with a lot of new items, from nursery furniture and decor to toys and clothing, and you’re going to need to find a place to store all of it. Here are some tips to help organize your nursery and home.
40
LIFE STYLE
1. MAKE SPACE FOR BABY. If the room you are planning on using as the nursery is currently being used as a guest room or office, you’re going to have to make some space. Clear out as much as possible from the room and store or donate any furniture. If your nursery-to-be is functioning as an office space, consider moving the desk into another room since computer cords and pens aren’t going to be child-safe. Take this as an opportunity to start fresh and get rid of anything you don’t truly need. 2. ORGANIZE BY YOUR BABY’S AGE. You will receive a lot of gifts, toys and clothes that are not quite right for your baby just yet. Store these items in the closet or elsewhere in your home so they are out of the way until you need them. After your baby outgrows things, either donate them or store them. 3. CHOOSE MULTI-USE OR GROW-WITH-ME ITEMS. A lot of baby items are available with multiple functions or have the ability to change with your child as he or she grows. If you can get one product that does two things instead of two separate products, you’ll save yourself money and storage space. This can even apply to nursery furniture, like a crib that converts into a full bed or a changing table that can be used later as a regular dresser. 5. MAKE RULES. If you find that your house is consistently 4. The Relationship Rule New Parents Should Break BY ERIN WHITEHEAD FITBOTTOMEDMAMAS.COM
46
LIFE STYLE
W
hen you first get married, wise souls give you all kinds of advice to ensure the longevity of your union. One rule was “never go to bed angry.” And I get it: It’s meant to make you hash out the little problems before they become big problems. To communicate as soon as there is an issue so that it doesn’t fester. But I regularly ignore this particular relationship rule. In fact, it’s almost a rule that when I’m mad, that I do go to bed angry. And I think it should pretty much be a rule that any parenting couple with kids under 5 years old, should also follow. As parents of young kids, my husband and I are exhausted. Exhausted people? They get snippy sometimes. They get mad at really dumb stuff. They forget to give the benefit of the doubt. And while I’m exhausted, I’m still coherent enough to know when I’m being pretty ridiculous or getting mad at things that wouldn’t make my well-rested self flinch. So even if I’m pissed with a capital P, I go to bed. Because even if I get a terrible night’s sleep—as has been the case for the last couple of years—a night of sleep always helps. Most of the time, whatever seemed like a big deal the night before is way less of a big deal the next morning. And more often than not, I’ve completely forgotten whatever it was I was snippy about. When things are a big deal, yes, you should talk and hash it out. But sometimes it’s better to just sleep on it and revisit it in the morning. Turns out, I’m not the only one who has this brilliant solution, a well known marriage counselor says that if you try to resolve everything before bed, you’ll just end up sleep deprived and cranky. And what parent needs more sleep deprivation?

THREE SECRETS TO LOSING BELLY FAT BY JAY BRADLEY
48
LIFE STYLE
A
s a health and wellness coach, the number one question that everybody asks is not “How do I live longer?” or “What can I do for more energy?” It is almost always “How do I lose this tummy?” In a world where we are bombarded by advertising promoting perfect looking four, six and eight packs, it’s no wonder we have become mildly obsessed.
works to burn excess weight. On either the elliptical machine or recumbent bike, do a three-minute warm-up. Increase resistance and sprint for 30 seconds then reduce resistance again and perform a 90-second cool down. Do this eight times followed by a two-minute cool down at the end. A total of 19.5 minutes just three days per week!
While having tight and toned abs is partly genetic, the great news is that there are a number of things that you can do today to firm, slim, and define your mid section for good!
EAT MORE FAT - This seems completely contrary to logic but the latest research is showing that by consuming more healthy unsaturated fats such as coconut, avocado, olive oil, fish, nuts, and seeds, not only do we feel satiated longer, but our system also gets busy stimulating the fat-burning process within our body. Studies have found that those who ate foods higher in healthy fats such as a Mediterranean diet had a lower Body Mass Index. This means less body fat and a leaner frame than those who ate a low-fat diet. They also lost excess weight more easily.
SUPPLEMENT WITH GREEN TEA - Green tea has been well researched to boost the immune system and fight cancer-causing cells in our body, but it also works very well to assist in the burning of excess weight and body fat. The Epigallocatechin gallate component in green tea acts as a thermogenic, meaning that it stimulates the fat-burning process. You’d need to drink at least seven cups of Green tea per day to get the effects of two to three capsules of a green tea supplement. I suggest taking them in the morning to avoid caffeine stimulation later in the day or choose a decaffeinated version. INTERVAL CARDIO - The good news is that the long cardiovascular sessions are over! New, improved interval cardio is taking its place. Interval training involves sprinting or pushing the body into an anaerobic state in short bursts of exertion for 20-30 seconds with rest periods in between. When doing interval cardio, there is less oxygen available to the muscles and the body will more quickly fatigue. A 20-minute session of interval cardiovascular exercise, just three days per week, stimulates the fat stores in our body and
We all want to look and feel our best and getting there just takes some consistent effort. By following these simple steps, and committing for a minimum of three months, you are well on your way to a slimmer, tighter, and more toned belly, just in time for summer! Always consult with your physician before starting any exercise, diet, or supplement routine. Jay Bradley is an anti-aging, wellness, and lifestyle expert living in Los Angeles. have corrupted my husband over to the dark side of the ab workout-iverse! He now planks every morning. I am super proud of myself for being the initiator of said craze, and I can feel a healthy dose of the “How long did you plank today?” competition coming on in our house. This may or may not have been responsible for me “accidentally” resetting the clock right after his session this morning. “Sorry honey, I didn’t even look at it. I have no idea how long you held it today.” All joking aside though, it is extremely important to have a buddy, or some type of support/ accountability partner in life. I’m not speaking as any kind of fitness expert. I am however, speaking as a person that has started and subsequently quit multiple different “fitness” plans in my life. I’ve done the cabbage soup thing, the lemonade and cayenne thing, the cottage cheese and cauliflower thing, Tae Bo, Total Gym, Power 90, Brazil Butt Lift, Core Body Reformer, Detox Tea, and everything in between. I even did that ridiculous hormone spray that you use before meals, the pens that were supposed to fill you up with ‘smells’ so you eat less, and those nasty little cups that taste like old coffee creamer! Holy Cow, I’ve tried a lot of CRAP! Not one bit of it gave any lasting results. I’m not putting my faith in planking either. What I am counting on, is being able to take this journey with my husband, and having him there to ridicule and harass me when I whine about not wanting to workout. I also fully intend to do the same for him, except with much more harassing. My kids are even getting in on the action. We’re starting our days with planking, and my daughter likes to show off the side plank that she learned in P.E.
I HAVE CORRUPTED MY HUSBAND OVER TO THE DARK SIDE OF THE AB WORKOUT-IVERSE!
If you’re involved in a new health and fitness plan, or struggling to continue with the one you’re on, I suggest finding someone that can hold you accountable and tell you the truth, whether you want to hear it or not!

BUNK BED BROS DESIGN BY CLARE PASCOE FROM PASCOE INTERIORS WWW.PASCOEINTERIORS.COM
T
wo brothers aged five and seven need a bedroom to share along with adjoining play area that could be be separated via a sliding wall of doors. The design needed to suit the mid century look of the house, yet be contemporary, bright and youthful. The bunk bed, a rare mid century find designed by Dunlop, can be split down into two single beds when the boys prefer a degree of separation and perhaps don’t want as much floor space for play. The Stouby chair in grey felt is by The Couch Potato Company and the floor rug is a fun imitation cow hide. Boys need room to play, so the play room simply consists of a vintage table and wall shelving to store toys – leaving plenty of room for creative play.

Vegalicious Quiche PREP 25 MINUTES
ACTIVE COOK 40 MINUTES SERVES 6
FILLING • 4 free-range, farm-fresh happy eggs or one 14 oz block firm organic sprouted tofu • 3 Tbsp olive oil, coconut oil, or organic ghee • ¾ cup chopped red onion • ½ cup chopped red bell pepper • ¼ cup de-seeded and chopped tomato • 2 cups chopped spinach • 1 cup organic mushrooms, cleaned and sliced • ¼ cup sheep’s milk cheddar, cut into ½-inch cubes (optional) • Pinch of cayenne or dash of hot sauce and Sea salt CRUST* • 1 cup millet, soaked 2–4 hours • 2 cups water • 1 Tbsp coconut oil or organic ghee MAKE IT LIKE SO 1. If using eggs, beat them together in a bowl and set aside. If using tofu, rinse and wrap it in a clean towel and place on a plate. Lay some heavy books on top to press out the excess water for about 30 minutes. Cut it into quarters and run it through your food processor until it gets creamy. You may need to add a little water if it’s too dry. 2. In a pot, cook the soaked millet in the 2 cups of water for 15 to 20 minutes, until the grain is soft and the water has been absorbed. (While the millet is cooking, prepare the filling.) Once it’s ready, allow it to sit for 5 minutes, uncovered, then fluff with a fork. 74
3. Preheat the oven to 350°F. Grease a 9-inch round pie plate with the 1 Tbsp oil and place the millet on top, pressing it down to about a ¼-inch thickness and pushing up the edges about ¾ inch. 4. Heat the remaining 2 Tbsp of oil in a skillet and add the onion. Cook until translucent, about 5 minutes. 5. Add the bell pepper, tomato, spinach, and mushrooms. Cook for 5 to 8 minutes, or until fork-tender. 6. If using tofu, add it to the pan and cook for 5 minutes. If using eggs, transfer the veggies to a bowl with the beaten eggs and mix together. Stir in the cheese if you’re using it, along with hot sauce and sea salt. 7. Pour the veggie + egg/tofu mix into the millet shell and bake at 350°F for 20 minutes, until firm in the middle. Broil for 2 minutes to crisp the top slightly. 8. Allow to cool and then cut into perfect little slices of breakfast (or lunch or dinner) deliciousness. By official definition, a quiche is an ovenbaked dish made with eggs and milk or cream in a pastry crust. Other ingredients such as chopped meat, vegeta- bles, or cheese are often added to the egg mixture before the quiche is baked. Well, here we go breaking some rules! You can do this with eggs or with tofu, depending on how you roll. Cream is not invited to this quiche party, but lots of vegetables are.

Coconut Hot Chocolate SERVES 2
INGREDIENTS • 1 tablespoon long shredded coconut • 100 g milk chocolate, chopped • 250 ml milk • 250 ml double cream • 160 ml coconut cream • 5 tablespoons coconut rum • Spray cream, or double cream, whipped to stiff peaks, for topping
Hot Chocolate by Hannah Miles Photograph by Steve Painter Published by Ryland Peters & Small
Begin by toasting the coconut in a dry frying pan/skillet, stirring all the time until it is golden brown. Take care as the coconut can burn easily. As soon as it starts to turn lightly golden brown, tip it out onto a plate. If you leave it in the hot pan it will continue to cook and may burn. Place the chopped chocolate in a heatproof bowl over a pan of simmering water and heat gently until melted. Spoon the melted chocolate into a saucepan with the milk, cream and coconut cream and bring gently to the boil, whisking all the time. Remove from the heat and add the coconut rum. (Adding it after removing it from the heat means that you will not burn off the alcohol.) Pour the hot chocolate into two cups. Top with spray or whipped cream and decorate with the toasted coconut. Serve immediately.
