the ultimate play room BY ROSELIND WILSON DESIGN WWW.ROSELINDWILSONDESIGN.COM | PHOTO BY EPHRAIM MULLER

FOR THE HOME

25

Having a young family, the client wanted an interactive, safe and playful area, in addition to the bedrooms, for her young sons to play. The playroom, located in the basement of the property, connects with the enclosed rear garden. This allows the children the ability to play in a safe environment inside and out, without causing chaos all over the house by running up and down the stairs from their bedrooms to the garden.

26

FOR THE HOME

With the joinery and interior architecture falling within the architect’s remit, a blank canvas of white was created against which Ros and her team could inject a burst of colour to make the room a vibrant and fun place to play. This was achieved by the use of an oversized bespoke wall paper of dripping paint, easily applied to any size wall, injecting colour without feeling too busy.

The British winter and darker days play into the favour of this well designed space as a climbing wall with coloured grips fixed securely into a wall of black chalk board paint together with oversized upholstered red circles in the joinery ensure the children can play in this room all year round, come rain or shine. 29

Valeria Mason

38

THAT’S LIFE

Coming from a classical background, Valeria has recently come out with her album, ‘Un Nuevo Inicio’ quickly receiving critical and fan praise. Her debut album was selected in the first round of nominees at the Latin Grammys in three categories: Best New Artist, Best Album of the Year and Best Pop Traditional Album. Valeria has made art and home life merge continuing to play at concerts while pregnant with her second child and uniting family and work.

HOW DO YOU AND YOUR HUSBAND, DASH HANDLE YOUR BUSY SCHEDULES WHILE RAISING A FAMILY? We see each other as a team. We share responsibilities and embrace collaboration at all times. While he is shooting, I take over most of the family responsibilities and don’t schedule any shows or recording sessions for myself. When his schedule is more free, I rehearse, record, write and perform my own music. Of course, there are times when we’re both busy with work commitments. We are fortunate to have the help of some great people that have been essential in assisting us with our daughter. She recently started school full time which she seems to adore, and that makes life a little easier, but soon her baby sister will take over most of my time again. WHAT DOES ‘STYLE’ MEAN TO YOU AS YOU RAISE YOUR FAMILY? Style, in my eyes, is a way we can communicate to the world, without words, a part of who we are. To be completely honest, in my everyday life, I don’t dedicate as much time to communicating my ‘style’ as I’d like. My priorities are more focused on the practical, that’s why part of my signature is letting my curly hair be, I don’t do much with it. It’s free. It’s more about being my authentic self at all times. That’s my style. HAVE YOU NOTICED IF YOUR DAUGHTER HAS DEFINED HERSELF AS AN INDIVIDUAL AND EMBODIED HER OWN KIND OF STYLE? Totally. My daughter loves to dress herself and choose her own clothes. She has a very “defined” sense of style at her young age. She is daring and creative with her wardrobe. She loves to represent who she is that way.

39

THAT’S LIFE

WHAT HAS CHANGED SINCE GROWING YOUR FAMILY? Everything. I think I became more efficient with my work and also more open to embrace whatever comes my way. I go with the flow. Everything is a mystery, and I’m not afraid of changing plans or adapting myself to make things work. Being a parent has challenged me to be out of my comfort zone, to reinvent myself over and over again. WHAT HAS STAYED THE SAME? My drive, joy for life and openness for wonder and learning. I’m still the same girl… Probably now I just accept myself more, I don’t need to please others. NAME ONE THING YOU LOVE TO KEEP IN THE HOUSE? Communication… But if you are talking about something tangible, musical instruments. HOW HAS YOUR WARDROBE CHANGED? HAS YOUR STYLE CHANGED? Oh yes. I produce myself less. I use less makeup, less accessories - I’m more minimalistic. Also, seeing my daughter grow so fast has helped me to clean up my wardrobe and hers more often. We keep things that we really use. I gave up on saving those jeans I wore when I was 24, thinking I will be that size again. My hips have changed for life. I have to embrace them and move on. DID YOU WISH YOU KNEW SOMETHING BEFORE YOUR FAMILY CAME, THAT YOU CAN SHARE? I wish I knew how to cook more traditional Mexican dishes. My mother taught us to eat healthy and never really cooked Enchiladas, Mole, Pozole or Tortas the food that would make my mouth water - but I only got to have on occasion. It’s a bummer that most of those recipes contain ingredients that aren’t exactly “conducive” 40

to optimum health in the long run…That being said…they can be like “heaven” while being pregnant! WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE CLOTHING LINE FOR KIDS AT THE MOMENT? Gap and Zara DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE MATERNITY BRAND YOU WORE? I love A Pea in the Pod and how affordable and comfortable the pants of Liz Lange Maternity are- you can buy at Target. NAME THREE BEAUTY PRODUCTS YOU CANNOT LIVE WITHOUT? Fluide de la Mer tint SPF 18, Crystal body deodorant Coconut oil HOW DOES YOUR HUSBAND, DASH HELP OUT AROUND THE HOUSE? I’m pretty lucky. He is an amazing cook. It relaxes him, allows him to explore his creativity, so its not work for him. We also take turns: while I clean, he plays with my daughter and while he cooks, I read, dance and play with her too. He also helps me with things that I prefer not to do, like vacuuming. Usually I organize and clean. He cooks and goes to the store- that said, we both do everything. We are a good team. HOW DID YOU AND YOUR HUSBAND MEET? I met my husband on the set of ‘Romeo and Juliet’ almost 20 years ago. I was an extra in the film and he played Benvolio. We had a cute romance during the time of shooting and then he left and we didn’t know of each other for 11 years. I actually found him on MySpace, sent him a message, and he answered right away. We reconnected and once we saw each other again, that was it. We’ve been together ever since.

MY DRIVE, JOY FOR LIFE AND OPENNESS FOR WONDER AND LEARNING. I’M STILL THE SAME GIRL… PROBABLY NOW I JUST ACCEPT MYSELF MORE, I DON’T NEED TO PLEASE OTHERS.

Singer and songwriter, Valeria Mason was born and raised in Mexico City but now calls LA home with her actor husband, Dash Mihok from Showtime’s Ray Donovan and her 3 year-old daughter and another one on the way in April. We had the pleasure to sit down with Valeria and discuss style and how being a parent has impacted that.

FOR THE HOME

The Gender Neutral Nursery BY TINA MARIE INTERIOR DESIGN Our style direction for this space was an “updated gender neutral”. For a long time, people thought that yellow was the only gender neutral color but mint has really become the new neutral especially as it relates to nurseries. By keeping the furniture streamlined and adding layers of soft accessories with touches of pattern, our goal was to create a soothing nursery that would be appropriate for any new bundle but that the parents could appreciate as well.

SEVEN STEPS TO FINALLY BECOMING A MORNING PERSON

These are the steps that will take you from a late-night junkie into an early-morning fanatic.

BY JEFF SANDERS

AUTHOR OF THE 5 AM MIRACLE (ULYSSES PRESS, 2015)

56

THAT’S LIFE

DRINK THE KOOL-AID AND EMBRACE YOUR INNER FLANDERS Ned Flanders, from The Simpsons, is the dork of all dorks with his big glasses, annoying voice, and early morning routine. To truly become a morning person, it’s best to think like a morning person. It’s time to find your why. Embrace your inner Flanders and do what he would do. Without a passionate why in place—your deepseated and compelling reasons for a 5:00 a.m. wake-up call—you will find any excuse to sleep in and negate the amazing benefits of an early morning. ACTION: Let’s say you are not a fan of Mr. Flanders, but there is a successful early riser that you would love to model your life after. Follow in the footsteps of the most successful person in your industry or the person who you believe embodies an awes ome future version of you. TRAIN LIKE THE TORTOISE The funny thing about making any significant life change is that it’s easy to do once. You can run a marathon without training. You can borrow money without a plan to pay it back. You can pull an all-nighter tonight and finish a big project. The problem is that all of these short-term choices have swift and painful repercussions. None of these are long-term solutions. It’s better to break large projects into tiny pieces and plan to work for the long haul. ACTION: Get out your calendar and begin the shuffle. What goals would you like to work on early in the morning? What tasks have you scheduled late at night that need adjusting?

SEND YOURSELF TO CAFFEINE REHAB I love coffee. Specifically, I love a double espresso every morning. When you make the switch to an early-morning routine, you may have to temporarily adjust your daily caffeine levels. The good news is that you don’t have to give up coffee to wake up earlier. However, if

you want to make the transition easier, you may find it helpful to minimize how much you drink so that you can fall asleep earlier each night. ACTION: Cut back on the quantity of caffeine you drink every day and set a daily boundary for caffeine consumption.

57

THAT’S LIFE

RESCHEDULE LATE-NIGHT ACTIVITIES Look at your own late-night habits and determine when they can happen earlier in the day, if at all.

TURN BACK THE CLOCK JUST A LITTLE Set tomorrow’s alarm clock just 15 minutes earlier than usual and update tonight’s bedtime to 15 minutes earlier as well.

In order to make this transition as smooth as possible, simply reschedule your favorite late-night habits. You do not have to cut out television and social media forever, just refrain from gorging on large helpings after your bedtime.

If your current bedtime is around 11:00 p.m. and you would like to transition to be asleep by 9:30 p.m., plan that 90-minute shift in 15-minute increments.

ACTION: Make a list of your current latenight activities. What do you consistently do that you know you could reschedule, minimize, or stop altogether?

BUILD A BOUNDARY AND GET TO BED The most effective way to wake up early is to go to bed early. The best way to ensure you stick to your bedtime is to destroy the obstacles between your busy, working self and your tired, lying- in-bed-with-youreyes-closed self. I created a late-night boundary just for this reason. 8:00 p.m. is my stop time. At exactly 8:00 p.m., I will turn off whatever I am working on. This includes my computer, phone, TV, iPad, and any other technology. ACTION: On paper, plan your ideal evening routine. Write out what you will do and when you will do it, including a specific time for your evening boundary to stop all work for the day.

ACTION: Plan your first 15-minute time shift. Set a definite bedtime and a corresponding alarm clock time that aligns to how much sleep you need for optimal rest. WAKE UP AND DO SOMETHING POSITIVE As you transition, plan a new healthy and productive activity you will do during those 15 minutes. The goal here is increased productivity and tangible results. Focus those 15 minutes on something you have been missing out on. By doing something you love, you will end up appreciating that time way more than you might imagine. To begin, make a list of morning habits you would like to adopt, or habits you can reschedule from later in the day to first thing. I recommend choosing something calm and peaceful, like meditation, prayer, or reading a positive book. If you want to make your transition easier, more effective, and faster, be sure to schedule a workout in your morning routine. ACTION: Plan the healthy habit you will do with your new 15 minutes of freed-up time.

AN

ECO-FRIENDLY NURSERY

66

FOR THE HOME

My husband, Angelo, and I spent an entire day stenciling the wall behind the crib with a stencil found on Etsy. I opted for a color scheme that could easily grow with Owen — grey paint on the closets and a grey crib keep the space from feeling too babyish. He is now three and still loves his room — his favorite thing is the bright green ceiling light!

As an eco-friendly interior designer, it was a priority to make my son’s nursery as healthy as possible. Green design is important for people of all ages, but it’s crucial for infants — they spend so much time in their room, and they’re vulnerable to the effects of chemicals. We used zero-VOC paints, natural fabrics, and sustainable furniture with non-toxic finishes. We specifically avoided using upholstery with flame retardants and anything that contained PVC.

A CARIBBEAN ADVENTURE BY EMILY KLINE PHOTOS COURTESY OF CURAÇAO TOURIST BOARD

78

17 EXCITING FIRSTS DURING YEAR ONE BY NADINE BUBECK WWW.NADINEBUBECK.COM

As moms, we go gaga over just about anything cute our children do. We try to capture everything on camera, and proceed to post it on Facebook for the world to see. (Guilty as charged.) Sometimes, we go a little too far with over-sharing; just the other night I found myself showing a waiter photos of my kids (like he cared). Truth is-- many of us are obsessed with our babies. I try to keep track of every single milestone that I plan on recording in the baby books I haven’t started for my sons. I’m determined to never ever miss a first, and so far, I haven’t missed much. It’s incredible everything that happens during baby’s first year, and as ridiculous as it sounds, I’ve been brought to happy tears witnessing such milestones.

90

THAT’S LIFE

HERE’S MY LIST OF 17 FIRSTS MOST MOMS GET EXCITED OVER DURING YEAR ONE.

1

The first scoot/army crawl. This comes before crawling--when they’re starting to be mobile. We praise their sense of determination to move.

2

The first rock; again, before the official crawl. This is when they get on their hands and knees and rock back and fourth. The first crawl! Success! Our little newborn is now a moving little person! (And now we are crying, in denial they are growing up too fast.) The first “real” solid, like a meltable cracker. Get your camera phones ready to capture this momentous milestone. It’s usually quite entertaining to witness. The first real play. Yes, your baby has been playing with toys from day one, but now he’s not just seeing how they taste or feel. This first is a cool one--watching your child babble on a toy phone or roll a ball. The first time he pulls himself up… And we thought crawling was a big deal! It’s just so exciting. The first time he walks assisted (with a walker or holding your hand). OMG, where did our baby go? The first unassisted step. Tears of joy.

The first poop. It’s black, tarlike, and bizarre looking…but it’s extremely rewarding (for some odd reason) to us moms. The first smile. Usually caused by relieving gas, but that adorable gummy smile is simply swoon-worthy. The first roll. OMG, they can move! And they are the strongest baby in the world. That first roll makes us so darn proud. The first laugh. Music to our ears and tears in our eyes. As moms, this melts our hearts. The first tickle-caused laugh. We love making our children happy--what’s better than making them giggle?! The first time they sit (until falling over). Head control…check. Balance… check. Sitting…check! It’s just so cute. The first time they eat puree. Most babies tend to gravitate toward that bewildered-what-the-heck-wasthat look and us moms find it hysterical. The first babble…especially when that babble happens to be “mama.” We convince ourselves that “mama” is their first official word because we, of course, are their best friends FOREVER.

3 4 5 6 7 8

Their first real trick… whether it be clapping, picking their nose, making a funny noise on demand, etc… this first is so funny!

MANAGEMENT

TIPS FOR WORKING

SINGLE

PARENTS BY VIAN SHAREF OWNER OF DERMEDIX COSMETIC CLINIC

Being a single mom for the last 7 years has enriched my life with tremendous personal growth, strength and perspective. During those years of being a single parent, I also established and built a business. A dream that I had all my life to be my own boss. Easier said than done for sure. My daughter was 2 years old at the time and I underestimated the challenges of being a single parent while building a brand new business. Did I mention that my family lived in another city and my daughter’s dad lived in another continent. So delegating, help and resources were limited

92

THAT’S LIFE

As time passed, I learned from many mistakes, trials and errors. I also developed new strategies to manage my daughter’s needs; grow my business and maintain a healthy lifestyle. Here are some tips for time management: PLAN, PLAN, PLAN: If you fail to plan, you plan to fail. Taking 10 minutes a day to plan your week will save you 10 hours that week. Look at your agenda first thing in the morning. Do not look at it at night as that might keep you awake thinking about how many things you have to take care of the next day. PRIORITIZE YOUR TO DO LIST: If you are having difficulty identifying what to take care of first, list your items to do as A, B, and C. It’s not the end of the world if you didn’t return the library books on their due date. Paying a small penalty is better than having a panic attack.

UTILIZE YOUR TIME: When my daughter has dance, I take my laptop with me to do emails and calls. After she goes to bed, I catch up on reading or projects. Preparing 3 meals a day can be time consuming & costly. Especially when you end up throwing out most of your groceries due to the lack of time for meal preparation. Buy a week’s worth of prepared healthy meals. That way not only you save time on grocery shopping, meal preparation & cleaning up but you also create more quality time with your children.

TECHNOLOGY CAN BE USEFUL: Don’t have time to read a book but lots of time DELEGATE DUTIES: Turn your kids into driving to work and activities? Audio assets not liabilities. Teach them organizing, books are great resources. While cleaning tidying and self care from an early age. I listen to self help Youtube videos on Having a reward system in place if they clean how to manage my time effectively or their rooms or manage small responsibilities any other topic that I don’t have time to can be more fun and less work for you. research and read about HAVE A SUPPORT SYSTEM: It is not easy to ask for help when you can see how busy people are now a days. Having a circle of good friends and family members is crucial in times of urgencies and surprises that are inevitable. Have a support system of three babysitters, and in case one isn’t available, you will have a backup plan.

Time management isn’t managing time. It is managing ourselves with the time that we have to do the things that we need to manage. After all, somehow we are capable of managing work, home and life with the limited amount of hours we have in the day. And that’s called parenting.

WORKING

OUT (post-baby) BY BRI DIETZ PERSONAL TRAINER, PRE/POSTS NATAL EXERCISE SPECIALIST, CLINICAL NUTRITIONIST | BRIDIETZ.COM

During my pregnancy with my daughter I remember ambitiously setting my post delivery exercise goals. I thought I would be resuming my kickboxing, spin classes, and weight training regimen after a few weeks off post baby. I was wrong! The reality of having a newborn, healing from delivery, feeling just a little bit sleep deprived and nursing very regularly made exercising look a little different than I had originally envisioned. Being active and getting back into exercising post baby is doable, in fact I highly recommend it! Not only is it a great opportunity to get your body moving, but increasing your endorphins helps regulate your hormones and manage postpartum. Here are three tips to help you exercise safely and efficiently post baby.

94

YOUR BEAUTY

if we are in an open park or at the beach she will try to run off, but I look at it as an opportunity for an added sprint midcircuit to chase after her (toddlers are fast)! There is nothing wrong with making the gym work for your schedule, but I would encourage being open to the alternative. Not only is it effective, it is an opportunity to engage and bond with your little one!

BE I NG ACTIVE AN D GETTI NG BACK I NTO EXE RCISI NG POST BABY IS DOABLE

START SLOW | I was very active before and during my pregnancy but was still alarmed at how much time I needed to recover and heal after my delivery! I would recommend starting your postpartum exercise journey with slow walks and a Kegal routine to help restore and strengthen your pelvic floor. Be mindful of Diastisis Recti (abdominal separation) that can occur from pregnancy by avoiding traditional sit-ups and crunches as these exercises can exasperate the abdominal wall separation, eek! In the first few weeks enjoy walking with your baby (my daughter loved both her stroller and carrier) and let your body heal. Giving birth is incredibly transforming and it’s ok to give your body time.

EXERCISE WITH YOUR BABY | I think my biggest misconception about exercise postbaby was that it would look the same as my routine pre-baby. Before the birth of my daughter I enjoyed taking exercise classes and spending hours training in a gym. As a new mom, I have now found that I enjoy working out outside or in my home with my daughter much more! As an infant I loved strolling her around and using park benches to help aid as a tool for a high-intensity circuit. We would stroll from bench to bench and I would get in some exercise, while my daughter was happily enjoying being out in the fresh air. Win, win! As she got older and was able to hold her head steady I would set up an in-home circuit and use her as a weight. She loved it, and I really was able to get a good workout in.

MAKE IT SOCIAL! | In the overwhelming, wonderful, chaotic, joy-filled, tiring, all-thingsbeautiful that is having a new baby, I found exercise to be just as important for my head and soul as it was for my booty. Even if it was just a walk, getting out and moving was therapeutic for me as I started my journey into motherhood. Now, add a friend and some conversation to that exercise and I always left feeling rejuvenated and encouraged. It isn’t always practical to have a workout buddy available during the week, so seek out some other mamas to connect with! I found mommy-and-me yoga as a great place to exercise and connect. I also know many moms who have loved stroller-strides groups (check to see if you have a group close to you and community hiking groups. Adding a group element offers accountability, support, and fun for you and your baby.

Now, I love to set up a circuit and give my daughter (now a toddler) small activities so she feels involved. She mimics my moves and usually knows the routine. Occasionally,

However you can get moving post baby, do what works for you! If you enjoy it you are more likely to stick to it and both mama and baby will be happier for it. 95
