ALWAYS IN FASHION

It feels like you can get away with a lot more in the office these days. Your work wardrobe should be professional and fit your industry but of course stick to the basic office apparel rules: your top never dipping below 4 inches from your collar bone and your hemline never more than a couple inches above you knee. Style doesn’t just start after you clock out for the day- even your work wardrobe should be a reflection of you. Office-appropriate doesn’t equate to bland and boring - below are a few more do’s and don’ts to make your 9-to-5 game all your own. DO: Upgrade some of your basics for more fashion forward pieces. Switch out a traditional pencil skirt for pleats, a basic button down for a pretty peplum, and your fitted pant for some flared trousers. Even those simple switches can make a big impact. DO: Play with patterns. Mix prints into your wardrobe to keep your style from feeling stale. If you aren’t a big fan of patterns, stick to smaller prints - you can’t go wrong with stripes. Florals are another feminine print that can work for any office. DON’T: Be afraid to wear color. I’ll never say no to neutrals, but bringing color into your wardrobe is a must to keep it feeling fresh. If you office is more traditional, opt for a colored handbag or summer lipstick to bring something bright and cheery to your look.

Getting the balance right for any room design is important especially when you are trying to achieve a balance between a cool trend and a sweet toddler. The design brief for this tiny room was to make an easy transition from cot to big boy bed while maximizing the small space to allow play and include the moon and stars –of which are the toddler’s favourite things. The beauty of this design is that the room still has the monochrome edge Mum wanted and more importantly

14

15

FOR THE HOME

Mum loves monochrome and has always wanted it for her son’s room though she was worried it may be a bit too grown up for her 2 year old son. Ensuring the room felt more grown up for this important milestone was the basis of this room design and I also felt that it was important to have a warm, friendly nature to the room. I suggested the addition of happy teddy bears to the room to give a more childlike appeal without being too kiddified.

16

The design was based around the gorgeous Seventy Tree prints, the sweet Made of Sundays door friend and the cool Roxy Marj bear blanket. The bears are positioned in a way that when her son is lying in bed he can see the smiling faces of his new teddy bear friends. I also included clouds to again help soften the room and the addition of the perfect clouds linen by Henry & Co as well as the cloud bookshelf by Willow & Wood made the room complete.

the room is so easily and inexpensively updated as he grows up. She can add in a few new things to give the room a more grown up edginess that she adores. The artwork can simply be changed to older more appropriate prints and the decals removed or changed meaning the room design has been future proofed which equals a lot less spending in the long run. The choice of furniture was important as the room is tiny and we wanted the furniture to serve its purpose for years to come. Luckily for Mum there is a built in robe with ample storage and once we removed the change table and toddler cot and chair that cramped the tiny room I knew it was important to choose furniture that was streamlined, multipurpose and has a minimal footprint. The choice of the Plyroom Singelo bedframe fit this bill perfectly. It is beautifully streamlined and doesn’t overbear the room. It is a perfect height and we bought

the matching safety rail for the initial transitioning period. The bed will see this toddler through well into his teenage years so it was a great choice. The bedside table has plenty of storage making it multipurpose and the string shelves allow for a collection of favorite things without taking up valuable floor space and is narrow enough not to over crowd the room. The small chair is perfect for reading in sat next to the gorgeous Willow and Wood cloud book shelf which again ties in the addition of clouds into the theme. The crochet basket holds all of his teddy bears and the Lego blocks hide away lots of toys and bits and pieces keeping the room clutter free which is hugely important in a small room. Overall the room design is appealing to both parents and children. It was a cost effective design that will grow with the child. The room got a big thumbs up from the client and her son who loves it and that is what is all about.

RITUALITY IN THE CITY

are in a constant state of evolution. Awareness leads to purging and renewal, small deaths and new births, highs and s, depth and discovery. Indeed, this past year has been a total whirlwind of crazy energy! Blame it on the moon, solar es, the eclipses, or the multiple retrogrades. Perhaps it’s the collective experience of growth in urban areas as the develng world continues to flourish with technology and ambitious advancement. All these factors influence the environment und us, and in turn, we shift little by little on the inside ourselves. As the world speeds around us we need to be remindo slow down. The human body is receiving an array of stimuli from a vast amount of sources, which makes it fundameny important to nurture the nervous system, and our soul in order to ultimately be healthy and whole.

deep curiosity guided me to Dr. Jesse Hanson, the clinical Director at Helix Healthcare Group. He provided me with 3 ple suggestions on how to cultivate a little calm in the chaos of the city.

ATHE

hough we are unable to control many things in our lives, it is empowering to know that we can control our breath. It is most powerful tool that we have, and conveniently with us at all times. The power of deep slow breathing activates parasympathetic nervous system. Having realized this phenomenon, alternate nostril breathing has been adopted and cticed by yogis for thousands of years for its many benefits including balancing the nervous system, and the hemispheres he right and left brain. Only minutes of this practice will center the mind.

e body’s autonomic communication network is directly influenced by our respiratory system. In this sense, we are able to ctly manipulate how our body behaves and transmits signals by recruiting controlled breathing patterns. In turn, these nges help bring balance to our emotions, thoughts, and actions. “ says Dr. Jesse Hanson

THAT’S LIFE

BY EMILY KLINE

Chef Sharone Hakman is best known from the hit cooking competition, MasterChef with Gordon Ramsey and is currently on Kocktails with Khloe. A father of two boys Lukah (6) and Niko (3) and husband to Monica, Sharone has an insatiable appetite for adventure and creating delectable food, along with caring for his family. The highly acclaimed chef, owner of a barbecue sauce company, and dedicated family man has a zest for life and we were lucky enough to sit down with the busy father to get to know his family and their sense of style.

HOW ARE YOU HANDLING YOUR BUSY SCHEDULE WITH TWO BOYS? Some days we are a well oiled machine and some days we are a chaotic zoo. We just ride the wave and somehow we get it done. WHAT DOES ‘STYLE’ MEAN TO YOU AS YOU RAISE YOUR FAMILY? Style is just another way to express ourselves. It’s also a way to make a visual statement to others about who you are. As a family, comfort comes first because when you’re not comfortable in what you wear, or in the choices you make, it shows. HAVE YOU NOTICED IF YOUR CHILDREN HAVE DEFINED THEMSELVES AS INDIVIDUALS AND EMBODIED THEIR OWN KIND OF STYLE? Yes indeed... My older son loves sports... so sportswear always takes the lead. However, he also has moments where he wants to be “fancy” and “accessorize” with belts, hats, bowties etc. It’s fun to watch him try new looks and see what he comes up with. My younger son, although he’s only 3, has full on swag. He loves wearing hats (and he always has to turn them to the side). He has a few pair of shades that he rotates as well. He loves shoes and always admires other people’s shoes. It’s pretty crazy to see him look cooler than me most days. HOW HAS YOUR WARDROBE CHANGED? HAS YOUR STYLE CHANGED AT ALL? My style and wardrobe have not really changed. I like comfort, clean lines, and relaxed but polished. It’s always been the way I’ve leaned. Jeans and black T-shirt all day long. ANYTHING YOU WISH YOU KNEW SOONER WHEN IT CAME TO KEEPING YOUR INDIVIDUALITY WHILE GIVING UP EVERYTHING FOR YOUR CHILDREN? Not at all. Every step I take in this life, is a lesson in itself. I believe there’s a reason it happens when it does and it’s on me as an individual/dad to grow from it.

27

THAT’S LIFE WHAT HAS CHANGED SINCE GROWING YOUR FAMILY? WHAT HASN’T CHANGED? The amount of work load on a daily basis, the chaos, the noise level in the house, the lack of alone time etc. HOWEVER, with all of that comes the insurmountable love, laughter, happiness, fulfillment, and fun! WHAT HAS STAYED THE SAME? My wife and I have always been a team and that has never come more in handy than when kids came into the picture. Also our values and morals about life and family. Kids make it very easy to put family first.

NAME ONE THING YOU LOVE TO KEEP IN THE HOUSE? Food! I know it may not be a creative answer but MAN do our kids eat A LOT! If we don’t have food in the house and lots of it at all times, it’s not a pretty site. Food food food all day long. WHAT MEAL DO YOU COOK ALL THE TIME FOR THE KIDS? On Saturday mornings I make the kids something my son has named “busted pancakes” I have no idea why he named them that and he can’t quite explain it either. Maybe they’re not the prettiest, but they are so yummy. They are a secret delicious pancake recipe with either chocolate or vanilla protein powder added.

28

DO YOUR SONS LIKE TO HELP YOU COOK? Yes, they’re absolutely obsessed! If it were up to them, they would cook with us at every single meal. We try to let them help as much as possible! ANY TRICKS TO HELP PICKY KIDS EAT THEIR VEGGIES? Two things work for us: 1. Having them actually cook with you. I will personally give my kid a handful of spinach and have him put in his omelette. The chances of them eating it then, goes up dramatically. 2. I put it in there foods and sometimes don›t tell them till after they say they love it. Like kale and broccoli meatballs, black bean brownies, zucchini and spinach in pasta sauces etc.

THAT’S LIFE PHOTO BY WWW.WHITEHAUTEPHOTOGRAPHY.COM

DID YOU WISH YOU KNEW SOMETHING BEFORE YOUR FAMILY CAME, THAT YOU CAN SHARE? How granted I took my “freedom” before them. I could jump in the car and head anywhere at any time! I had no idea that was such a luxury

ANY PLANS TO ADD ONE MORE TO THE FAMILY? Whatever comes, I’ll take with gratitude. WHAT DO YOU ENJOY DOING AS A FAMILY? Absolutely everything. I’m proud and so appreciative at what our family unit is. It’s the best team I could’ve ever hoped for.

BOOK SHELF

PLAYING FROM THE HEART

BY PETER H. REYNOLDS All Ages This book is a pitch-perfect tribute to the power of music and the bonds of family. Young Raj learns notes, scales, and songs. But the more he practises and the more skilled he becomes, the less he enjoys playing, and he finally stops altogether until his father becomes ill.

THE UNCORKER OF OCEAN BOTTLES BY MICHELLE CUEVAS Ages 4-8

A beautiful illustrated book about an eccentric seaman who finds messages in floating bottles and then delivers them to nearby villagers. One day he uncorks an invitation to a seashore party. No one claims it, but when he ventures shyly to the beach those he has served serenade him. The underlying message in this title is about learning to see the worth of every person is a treasure.

44

BOOK SHELF

WHO BROKE THE TEAPOT? BY BILL SLAVIN Ages 3-5

A picture book about anger management, broken china and the blame game. The author takes a sly poke at parents in their less-thanfiner moments in this energetic story.

MY FRIEND MAGGIE BY HANNAH E. HARRISON Ages 4-8

A classic in the making, this sweet and heart- tugging story about bullying, friendship, and fitting in is a moving story and one that every parent should read to their child.

There are so many darling first birthday party themes out there but the one that kept tugging the strings of my heart was a gorgeous garden party. What gravitated me towards it was the use of big balloons, lots of green leafy florals and pretty peach blooms. Of course I wanted to add a twist to the theme, so I decided to incorporate bunnies to the garden idea. The theme felt right for me in terms of cost effectiveness but also how sweet and soft the theme is. I think it’s always great to keep your eyes peeled for neutral holiday decor that can be used for parties or for entertaining. I purchased a lot of bunny props but the one I ended up using was a wood bunny cut out board that I prettified with faux flowers. I then added some bunny straw toppers to some pretty bottles we used to sip wine out of. I also highly recommend the use of specialty linens. They make a world of a difference in warming up any decor. I fell in love with this linen that had little poms all over it. The little poms on the linen reminded me of bunnies tails so it was perfect and it streamlined all of my decorative details. I take pride in doing everything myself but it is also more cost efficient than bringing in a bunch of vendors to do the designing/set up for you. There is an abundance of inspiration out there these days along with many DIY tutorials. Pinterest can bring the designer out of everyone! Sometimes you have to delegate but when I can do something myself, I really enjoy it.

HOW TO CREATE AN ORGANIZED PLAYROOM BY BECKI OWENS

WWW.BECKIOWENS.COM | @BECKIOWENS

50

FOR THE HOME

We often design spaces for children, or homes with young children. Toys and storage is always a concern. The challenge is creating a space that looks beautiful, but is still functional and fun for kids. When it comes to creating a play space for your children organization is key! 1. PURGE! It helps to have a big clean out and donate to goodwill, organize the rest, and then select your favorite designed toys that can be out and read as an accessory rather than clutter. 2. MAKE STORAGE BEAUTIFUL. Use beautiful baskets to store and organize toys and help with clutter. The baskets are great for all the plastic toys that aren’t as “pretty.” Label these baskets and it will help make clean up easy! Another of our favorite ways to store toys are rolling boxes or carts. You can keep them in the playroom and wheel them out to other areas of the house when needed. 3. CREATE A DISPLAY. Set up a great shelf that is lined with baskets or books- this gives you the opportunity to create a pretty display or make a statement while adding a ton more toy storage. 4. CREATE A SECRET HIDEOUT. Children love to have a playhouse and a teepee is a great way to give them that and there are some great designs available now too. 5. INVEST IN GREAT TOYS! Of course we love to choose toys that are not only fun but well designed. This helps you to not feel overwhelmed with the “mess” of toys and showcase beautiful pieces. We have found that choosing toys that are beautifully made help clients feel that they add to their space rather than overwhelm them. These toys can also be heirlooms one day for grandchildren or nieces and nephews. We love beautifully hand crafted wood toys, stacking blocks in all colors, and large plush animals. Also, ride on toys are always a hit with kids! 6. HAVE FUN WITH IT! As you are creating this space, keep in mind its where your children will escape to be creative and have fun. Imagine what they will enjoy doing and how you will spend time with them in this space. Creating an organized and beautiful play room will not only be fun for the kids, but will be a place you are proud to display and enjoy as well.

Jennylyn’s

Tones for Tots makes it easy to

paint it beautiful! BY JENNYLYN PRINGLE

When I found out that I was expecting, amongst the excitement, uncertainty and questions as a first time parent I was immediately all over Pinterest getting ideas for the nursery! Part of the fun of nesting is choosing your little one’s room décor. But I had a dilemma; I wanted the gender of my baby to be a surprise. This got me thinking that not only do I need the healthiest paint possible, but I need gender neutral colours too!

Not everyone is as lucky as I am to have a chemistry lab at their fingertips. I went knee deep into analysing our formulation, meticulously investigating every ingredient to ensure that it was the safest option on the market and even went as far as hiring a third party to ensure that we met the Toy and Safety Standards of North America for coatings before Jennylyn’s Tones for Tots was born! Made with all natural mineral pigments, our unique formulation is VOC free, contains no phthalates, ammonia, formaldehyde, and the list goes on and on. Whilst the safety of this paint line

Looking at different nursery ideas, colour combos, accent colours and ingredient lists, I wasn’t finding the perfect solution so I thought - why not develop it! I’ve worked in the paint industry my entire life growing up with my parents business, Homestead House Paint Co., so it was just a natural progression for me. We become much more aware of our health when expecting, from what we eat to our skincare and our surroundings. We should also be thinking about the air we are breathing! Indoor air quality can be 1000 times more toxic after painting with a conventional paint with their long list of chemicals that I can barely pronounce, let alone spell. The most important thing for me was a

was top of mind, I also wanted to create a beautiful colour line that would make choosing colours for every nursery easy. I developed 7 beautiful soft tones in a range of soft pastels with a European feel, to a vibrant yellow and a classic gray. And with adorable names like Little Piggy and Little Star, the colours aren’t the only thing standing out. I even paired up colours to help you choose what works for your room!

FOR THE HOME

CALZONE DI PREZZEMOLO The literal translation of calzone is ‘trouser leg’, referring to the double thickness of fabric or, in this case, bread dough. The recipe comes from the Bar Mundial in Cassibile, so thank you, Gianni Fronterre. It is lighter than you might expect, not as doughy as many other calzoni, and the filling, despite being incredibly simple, is quite delicious. INSTRUCTIONS Cream the yeast with the sugar and a little of the water. If using dried yeast, mix it with the flour. Mix the flour and salt in a large bowl. Add half the oil and the creamed yeast together with the remaining water. Mix with a wooden spoon to form a ragged dough. Turn out of the bowl and knead vigorously for 10 minutes until soft and pliable. Return the soft dough to a clean bowl. Cover with a damp, clean dish towel and leave to rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 1 hour. Meanwhile, prepare the filling. Heat the remaining oil in a frying pan/skillet. Fry the onion until soft, then add the parsley and stir for 2 minutes over medium heat. Season with pepper and leave to one side. When cool, mix in the cheese.

INGREDIENTS • 7 g/1⁄4 oz. fresh yeast or 1 teaspoon dried/active dry yeast • 1 teaspoon caster/superfine sugar • 225 –250 ml/3⁄4–1 cup warm water (37°C/99°F) • 550 g/4 cups white strong/bread flour, plus extra for dusting • 1 tablespoon salt • 100 ml/7 tablespoons olive oil • 1 onion, finely chopped • a very large handful of flat-leaf parsley, freshly chopped • 350 g/12 oz. mozzarella cheese, cut into small cubes • freshly ground black pepper

Preheat the oven to 200C (400F) Gas 6. Knock back the dough (i.e. release the gas in the dough by punching it gently) and knead for 4 minutes. Roll out into a large rectangle 38 x 20 cm/15 x 8 inches. Spread the onion and cheese mixture over the dough, leaving a 1-cm/1/2-inch margin all round.Fold the dough lengthways into three, enclosing the filling, and place on a greased baking sheet. Leave for 10 minutes to rise again, then dust with flour. Bake in the preheated oven for 20 minutes until light and golden. Cool on a wire rack, then cut into thick or thin slices and serve hot, cold or warm as snacks or canapés.

THAT'S LIFE

SPIRITUALITY IN THE CITY BY SHAUNA IRELAND @ALIGNANDSHINE

84

THAT'S LIFE

W

e are in a constant state of evolution. Awareness leads to purging and renewal, small deaths and new births, highs and lows, depth and discovery. Indeed, this past year has been a total whirlwind of crazy energy! Blame it on the moon, solar flares, the eclipses, or the multiple retrogrades. Perhaps it’s the collective experience of growth in urban areas as the developing world continues to flourish with technology and ambitious advancement. All these factors influence the environment around us, and in turn, we shift little by little on the inside ourselves. As the world speeds around us we need to be reminded to slow down. The human body is receiving an array of stimuli from a vast amount of sources, which makes it fundamentally important to nurture the nervous system, and our soul in order to ultimately be healthy and whole. My deep curiosity guided me to Dr. Jesse Hanson, the clinical Director at Helix Healthcare Group. He provided me with 3 simple suggestions on how to cultivate a little calm in the chaos of the city. BREATHE Although we are unable to control many things in our lives, it is empowering to know that we can control our breath. It is the most powerful tool that we have, and conveniently with us at all times. The power of deep slow breathing activates the parasympathetic nervous system. Having realized this phenomenon, alternate nostril breathing has been adopted and practiced by yogis for thousands of years for its many benefits including balancing the nervous system, and the hemispheres of the right and left brain. Only minutes of this practice will center the mind. “The body’s autonomic communication network is directly influenced by our respiratory system. In this sense, we are able to directly manipulate how our body behaves and transmits signals by recruiting controlled breathing patterns. In turn, these changes help bring balance to our emotions, thoughts, and actions. “ says Dr. Jesse Hanson

LISTEN Sounds surround us, and bring tranquility into our lives. Contrary to the peaceful sounds of nature, city sirens and hurrying horns tend to create negative effects on our nervous system, and these vibrations can frazzle our nerves. Under the recommendation of Dr. Hanson, I decided to take a sound bath. Clothing-required Sound Therapy is a unique therapeutic intervention that integrates specially tuned instruments to create shifts in the human nervous system. On a cellular level, we speak and operate at varying vibrational frequencies. Sound Therapy capitalizes on that science, and fine-tunes the vibrations of the human body I laid down comfortably, and allowed the science of sound to soothe my entire being. DRINK WATER. Hydration allows you to process a multitude of shifts on a cellular level, which makes water essential for nourishing both your body and brain. Our bodies are constantly healing, detoxing, and rebuilding, and water is healing in and of itself. As a medium that has a memory of its own, it has an ability to carry and retain information that is referred to as the “vibrational imprint”. Masaru Emoto’s revolutionary work with water on a molecular level further proves the effects of thoughts, words, and sound on water. Drink it in, and allow it to permeate through your being.
