Formal director training will help you to understand the legal implications of the role and the responsibilities of directors and company boards. Director training may even act as mitigation if things do go wrong, in that it can be demonstrated that reasonable steps had been taken to ensure a director had taken the time to equip themselves with the skills needed as required by the Companies Act 2006. It is simply not on to say, for example, “I didn’t understand the accounts” – His Honour is likely to retort that you should – and that if you were unsure you should have made efforts to do something about it! Beyond the 2006 Act, The Institute of Directors have, in the last year, published a set of Governance Principles for Unlisted Companies and SMEs and one of the basic 9 principles states “All directors should receive an induction on joining the board and should regularly update and refresh their skills and knowledge”.

Kiki Maurey, MBA, is a management consultant and speaker – described by Barclays as ‘one of the best keynote speakers and facilitators in the country’. She’s an experienced public appointee and Non-Executive Chairman. As a qualified professional Coach Mentor she continues to use her extensive experience to coach-mentor senior leaders on business growth and top team development.
