Sylvia Harris 2021 SEGD Fellow Posthumous (1953-2011)

This past April, the newly formed SEGD Fellow Committee convened to review nominations for the 2021 SEGD Fellow. From those nominated, the committee chose Sylvia Harris (1953-2011). In recommending Harris for confirmation, committee member Michael Reed stated that “Although this honor will be posthumous, the committee felt that Sylvia Harris’ accomplishments and contributions to the practice and advancement of environmental graphic design exemplify SEGD’s ideals.” Sylvia Harris was a remarkable advocate of good design for real people—a Citizen Designer—recognized for her commitment to improving the civic experience through design. Sylvia was also a design innovator of great energy, passion, and intelligence who generously gave back to the design community. SEGD first recognized Sylvia’s contributions in 2012 by establishing of the Sylvia Harris Award honoring her legacy by "supporting other vanguards dedicated to public design." After graduating from Yale in 1980, Sylvia co-founded Two Twelve Associates with classmates Juanita Dugdale and David Gibson. While building their new design practice, Sylvia honed the skills and interests that would ultimately propel her career. Her groundbreaking work in digital consumer banking systems for Citibank set an early standard for human-centered automated customer service. At Sylvia Harris LLC, which she established in 1994, Sylvia shifted her focus to design planning and strategy and guided some of the nation’s largest hospitals, universities and civic agencies through systems planning, policy development and innovation management. As creative director for Census 2000, Sylvia was tasked with encouraging more Americans—including those who had been previously underrepresented—to participate in the Census. Her last venture, Citizen Research & Design, helped public sector organizations better communicate with the people they serve. Unfortunately, Sylvia’s new endeavor was cut short by her sudden and untimely death in July 2011. In addition to her practice, Sylvia taught and mentored a generation of new designers at the Yale School of Art, Cooper Union and Purchase College. As a designer and as a person, Sylvia Harris always wanted to do the right thing, the smart thing, and the thing that would make the biggest difference to the most people. She was a model citizen and a model designer—a Citizen Designer. Opposite Page Sylvia Harris, 2021 SEGD Fellow, Posthumous (1953-2011) 8 SEGD21 | Achievement Awards

What was it like working and partnering with Sylvia when you and she and Juanita first started your own firm? She was a dynamic business partner, keen to share her experience and ideas, and eager to help figure out how to build a design business fueled more by talent and enthusiasm than many resources. What are your impressions of her from that time? She was delightful, sometimes infuriating, always inspiring. Delightful? She was a sparkling, warm, joyful presence in our nascent studio, always ready with a smile and a song; she had a beautiful singing voice. Infuriating? She could be a dog with a bone. When she had an idea in her head it was hard to get her off course, change her mind. The damn thing was that she was usually right. Inspiring? She was always interested in exploring new ways of doing things and she passionately believed that good design should be available to everyone. She was wonderfully optimistic. What do you miss most about Sylvia 10 years after her passing? She was one of the most vivid people I’ve ever known. That, in combination with her belief in doing the right thing in the best way, she made her a powerful ally and the warmest of friends. She always made me laugh, made me think, and made me care. I’ll never forget her. Katie Osborn, Principal & Founder, Via Collective What influence did Sylvia have on you as a young designer? What were her leadership qualities? Working with her directly, I was immediately drawn to her superpower to bring everyone to the table, to have the discussions, and then pull information from people in a way that empowered both the project and the people. She wanted nothing but the best for everyone, and she was an amazing mentor and collaborator. Her style of leadership: open, inclusive, giving. All these attributes inspired me, and I’ve taken them with me as I've grown into a leader. What do you miss most about Sylvia 10 years after her passing? So many things! Sylvia gave incredible advice, mostly because she asked so many incredible questions; she basically helped you come to your own conclusion just through inquiry. Also, the way she could take a problem, dissect it, and then turn it on it's head in order to develop the best recommendation. I’ll also miss her generosity to share; how she included others and offered whatever she could to help others succeed. Anna Crider, Principal, Entro, SEGD Board President 10 SEGD21 | Achievement Awards

How did Sylvia contribute to SEGD? How did Sylvia help advance the profession of EGD? Sylvia put the needs of the individual first in design. As a design strategist, she brought awareness to the need to focus on, and evaluate, how people interpret, understand, and recall information. She created opportunities for her peers to have a seat at the table to solve institutional challenges through environmental graphic design. What do you miss most about Sylvia 10 years after her passing? Sylvia was a kind and generous woman. She led with integrity, passion, and humility. She garnered respect not only through her professional accomplishments, but also through her humble nature — quick to share an anecdote from her past or present that would let you know you were not alone. I wish she could have continued to serve as a living role model for our community and emerging designers. Juanita Dugdale, Principal, Dugdale Projects and Co-Founder of Two Twelve Associates What was it like working and partnering with Sylvia when you and she and David first started your own firm? Sylvia was one of the most decisive and adventurous people I’ve ever met. When asked about her post-graduation plans, she replied “go into business with Juanita and David” before even mentioning this to us! Sharing her entrepreneurial zeal, we joined forces without hesitation at an opportune time when starting a firm fresh out of school was still comparatively unusual. What are your impressions of her from that time? Equally talented at design, management and marketing, Sylvia was a perfect partner. She put clients at ease instantly with her warmth and humor. A great listener, she could win over even the most jaded executive with her astute problemsolving skill and steadfast advocacy of the intended user. Her early championing of multiculturalism and later embrace of design planning for the civic realm both proved prescient, considering the extraordinary challenges society faces today. What do you miss most about Sylvia 10 years after her passing? I miss our friendship from graduate school through Two Twelve and beyond. I miss hearing “Dugneeta!”, her nickname for me that opened our phone calls. I miss her folksy wisdom and uncanny insights. We last met up when she sang at my husband’s memorial just weeks before her own death. Sylvia lovingly performed Dylan’s “Forever Young,” a prophetic choice.

How did you get started as a media designer and producer? It’s kind of a long and sordid tale! My background in college was in media design and media effects. I then went to LA to spend a couple years in the music industry. In the process I started developing other design skills to support the music, including media production design. That quickly progressed into a full-time career where I was going out on the road with corporate shows. I spent several years running a prepress service bureau and working in high-end medical media. Things just kept leading, one to another, to the design of larger experiences. What is your philosophy toward media design and production? One of our tag phrases is “Put the analog back in with the digital.” There was a time when people felt “We must do something digital. We must add the digital element because everyone expects it.” But how do you make the digital element not only a wow factor but also productive? To be honest, digital as a wall treatment is still absurdly expensive. So, it has to mean something. It can't be just this big TV on the wall screaming at you with pixels flying everywhere, otherwise it is nothing but spectacle. As media designers we like to stand in the middle of the conversation. We don't run the conversation, but we're there to talk to anybody at the table.

How did you first get involved with SEGD? In 2010 or 2011 the market went a little flat on the event side. And, so, we literally said “Well, what else can we do with the skill sets we have? Let’s take the high-end stuff for video to the install world.” We made a really successful crossover into the installation and technical consulting side, vetting other people's designs. And then we stumbled onto SEGD, literally. At that time there was a gap between designers going from traditional to semi-digital. How could we help them vet their designs? So we immediately joined SEGD and got involved and helped with media, and it just blossomed from there. It made absolute perfect sense that we use our skill sets to help SEGD where we could as members. And it’s turned into a great relationship. What advice would you give SEGD’s young designers who are just starting out? Get multidisciplinary—that’s the big message—learn those other design sectors, whether motion graphics or print or fabricating channel letters. Stay with the thing you love, but learn those other design fields so you can figure out how to use your skills in those areas. Design is about solving a problem and providing value, so always look at that. No matter which design field you're in, and no matter your specialty, ask “What value does it provide?” Opposite Page Staging by P. This year’s SEGD Chapter Chair Award goes to the co-chairs of the Riga Chapter, Latvia: Dagnija Balode, Inguna Elere and Holgers Elers (all of Design Studio H2E). Under their leadership, this group of three has made the Riga Chapter a model for SEGD chapters around the globe. In its first year (2019) Riga quickly became a center of design discourse through a series of well-planned, thoughtful and high caliber events. Each event focused on timely and engaging topics including “Guidelines for Safe Public Premises in the Age of Covid-19 Design,” “Design & City” and “Design & Ethics.” Dagnija, Inguna and Holgers raised the bar for all of us.

Based in Burlington, Ontario, SignAgent has been an SEGD Industry Member since 2004. The company’s cloud-based software system revolutionized the planning, implementation, and maintenance of wayfinding and sign management. David Jorritsma, President of SignAgent, developed this powerful collaborative tool used by all project stakeholders—designers, facilities managers, event planners, and fabricators—in the creation of complex signage programs. Under David’s leadership, SignAgent continues to evolve. In 2019, the company introduced an iOS app enabling rapid on-location data collection for punch lists and onsite approvals. In May 2020, David invited the design community to share signage programs developed as COVID-19 responses which he then shared with the broader wayfinding community.

By commissioning the painting of the words “BLACK LIVES MATTER” in 50-foot-high letters on a two-block section of 16th Street NW in Washington, DC, Mayor Muriel Bowser harnessed the power of environmental graphic design to create an instant landmark and an important gathering place in the nation’s capital. Conceived in defiance of federal police who blocked DC streets during the George Floyd protests, the DC Public Works Department painted the words in yellow capital letters on June 5, 2020, creating a national focal point and safe space for civil rights protesters. Mayor Bowser took a stand by creating the mural and renaming it “Black Lives Matter Plaza” as a showcase for her constituents' rights to free speech and public gathering, fulfilling her role as public servant.

The entire exhibit is fully personalized to the visitor, shifting and animating to visualize the words spoken in response to a question. Through sophisticated and visually mesmerizing scientific diagrams on angled planes of various sizes, visitors discover commonalities among languages and cultures.” “This room is a fantastic expression of one of my favorite goals of interactive experiences — to give people super powers. Say anything, and the space responds to you in every language. You are in the heart of the universal translator. Even more importantly, you can see how the machine translation is happening in real time. A.I., deep learning, and high dimensional neural networks are incredibly unintuitive and their workings opaque. By visualizing how the algorithm arrives at each of its translations, the visitor can build an understanding of how the overall system works. The effect is both empowering and aweinspiring at the same time.”

Found in Translation Best of Show Award Found in Translation immerses museum visitors within the world of automated language translation. This interactive installation is part of the larger exhibition “Translations: Understanding Misunderstanding” curated by Tokyo’s design museum, 21_21 Design Sight, and uses the power of the spoken word and written language to engage visitors in translation. The larger exhibition is based on the idea that “translation is designing communication.” Our visual and auditory senses— and even our bodily expressions—act as bridges to transmit and receive communications. As such, translations generated by all these processes “can have much in common with art and design” according to the exhibition’s curators. The designers of the Found in Translation interactive were challenged with how to present the “magic” of automated translation using the data sets from many different languages—and how to do this in a fun, informative, and engaging way for museum visitors. Stepping into the gallery, visitors encounter a dark space featuring a spotlit pedestal at its center. Surrounding the pedestal are 24 screen panels of different sizes and positioned at differing heights. As visitors approach the pedestal, a voice asks a question, which visitors can answer by speaking into a microphone. “Hearing” the responses, the installation’s software (Google Translate) translates the answers into 24 languages, almost instantaneously. The central screen displays a visualization of the entire data set while others display language-specific translations. The result is a theatrical experience placing visitors at the center of the translation process. Swirling lines of bright colors, moving across all screens, suggest the act of translating. The screens present the written translations in a variety of typefaces, scripts and vibrant colors. Simultaneously, audio speakers broadcast the translations in a diversity of voices. The designers’ visualizations of data sets show how the “multilingual machine learning model” clusters words from different languages by semantic similarity. Word by word and sentence by sentence, it becomes apparent which words from which languages are clustered together. The designers conveyed this in a couple of different ways. First, the colors of the fonts express the language family that each language belongs to. Second, the size of each screen is directly proportional to the number of people who speak a particular language around the world. The end result: Found in Translation not only amazes visitors with its visual and auditory design elements, but also sparks their curiosity to learn more about the world’s languages and the different peoples who speak them.

This project was refreshing, elegantly executed and served the purpose of facilitating important conversations.” “Simple, memorable and beautiful. This installation utilized the space of the atrium and the different view points beautifully. Inviting visitors to participate by taking a seat themselves is a smart way of humanizing the statistics (especially considering the added psychological effect that most people would sit on the white “majority“ seats and would not want to be singled out by sitting on the yellow ones highlighting the message anew).”

Seat at the Table Sylvia Harris Award Looking down into the atrium of Philadelphia’s Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts, visitors can’t help but notice a collection of seven interactive installations located on the building’s ground level. Statistical information, painted in giant typography on the floor next to each installation, highlights current gender inequities in the United States. Titled Seat at the Table, this temporary exhibition recognizes the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment while acknowledging how much more needs to be done to achieve gender equity. The 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution guaranteed women the right to vote in 1920, but it was only a first step towards greater rights for women. “Seat at the Table” reminds audiences of the continuing struggles of American women to achieve full equity with their male peers. Presented by Drexel University’s Vision 2020 at the Institute for Women’s Health and Leadership, the exhibition asks “Where are we now?” To answer this question, the designers of “Seat at the Table” created seven public seating areas of custom-built furniture. Each literally invites visitors to “take a seat” and consider the uneven ratios of women to men in the workplace, government and society. Inspired by the Kimmel Center’s surrounding theaters, the exhibition acts as an open stage, inviting visitors to become participants within each scene. These interactive installations include a circular boardroom table where just one of 20 chairs is highlighted, representing the 5% of Fortune 500 CEOs who are women. Another includes a row of four stationary bikes where visitors can hop-on and “exercise” their right to vote while learning about voter turnout in the Presidential years of 1920, 1972, 2016 and 2020. Prior to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Kimmel Center’s public atrium hosted thousands of visitors per week, before and after events. Seat at the Table’s custom-built furniture, bright color palette, and large-scale typography take advantage of the atrium’s expansive space and elevated vantage points. The titles of each installation can be read from all three balconies above the atrium floor, giving visitors a bird’s-eye view of the exhibition. At the ground level, visitors can dwell longer on each piece— which are accessible to people of various ages, heights, and abilities—for a more intimate experience.

Immersive & experiential technology design & project management for education, entertainment & events

Peregrine are the external eyes and ears in collaborative projects. We are your agile execution partner in experiential technology. We design and deliver experiential media systems, fabrication concepts, spatial programming services, operational process creation, content build & management, and value based project management.

Mercedes-Benz Pop-Up Museum Exhibit Design

After years of designing and producing for live events, activations, themed entertainment, and educational simulation environments, we believe it’s time to “Put the analog back into digital.” If all the storytelling, branding, spatial design, hardware, digital content and data does not translate into an actionable human experience... it’s merely a passive spectacle. Now, more than ever, stakeholders are expecting lasting context and relevance, not just a passing novelty. We know effective experiential delivery is only achievable through real-world multidisciplinary experiences. Our applied technology choices derive from our vast experience across various sectors and project environments. Peregrine provides a bridge between real-world human experience, creative design intent, relevant context in content, practical value-based engineering, and successful ongoing operations for owner/operators.

Using spoken sentences for the input of the visitors and output of the machines amplifies the human connection. The simple elegant motion graphics coupled with the spatial setup created an intimate experience despite the amount of media being used.”

A simple, elegant design solution that powerfully calls attention to a persistent social inequity. This exhibit deftly harnesses the environmental characteristics of a public space to communicate on multiple levels: from balconies above and on the exhibit floor itself—all with basic materials. Brilliant!”
