(Seguin) -- The Seguin Police Department says it will remain vigilant in any other future threats or rumors of rioting or disruptive behavior in the city of Seguin. Police Chief Terry Nichols follows up with additional messages to the public following Sunday's threats to loot and destroy local businesses including the Seguin Walmart store. The police department's decision to be proactive instead of reactive to these social media threats apparently worked as they warded
"Unfortunately, we got information through social media that people were planning to not just protest but actually cause damage to some local businesses and we took that very serious. We didn't know whether it was true or not but it got spread throughout the community that they were going to start specifically at Walmart and then march through town and destroy

Now while mass riots and other destructive protests continue across the country, Chief Nichols says he believes he speaks for most people in Seguin when he says that this type of behavior won't be tolerated in this community.

another business and then make their way downtown and we took it very serious and we think the community saw us mobilize -- a lot of police officers, a lot of presence to help to deter that. We are certainly glad that nothing happened. I really feel our community is above that. That there is a way to peacefully protest. We all saw what happened in Minnesota and what's going on around the country and people are rightfully upset and they have the right to protest peacefully and we support that. But what we won't support is any riot behavior, looting in stores, damage in property. We just simply won't tolerate that in any way, shape or form," said Nichols. Nichols says he understands that people are letting their voices be heard and
should continue to protest in peace if that is their desire. However, he says the problem is when other factors come into play that don't help the cause. "I do want the community to know that we are prepared. But, we are also very thankful because we believe Seguin is not like that. Could some folks from out of town come and agitate our local community? They could and we are prepared for that. So, we would just ask the community, please if you see stuff like this, squash it down and tell them, ' Not here. Not in our community. This is our home.' We all live here and the community doesn't want this kind of damage and (riots) behavior going on here," said Nichols. See NICHOLS, page 3

Seguin ISD school calendar to maintain its original start date in August By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera
(Seguin) -- It looks like Seguin ISD students will not be starting school a week earlier after all. In hopes of being able to conform to any unforeseen issues this upcoming school year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the school district had proposed a second school calendar for the 2020-2021 school year. The district in February had already approved a calendar for the year but because of the uncertainty of things, the district wanted to propose some minor adjustments to the calendar -- with the major change being when students would go back to school. In creating the second calendar, Sean Hoffmann, the Seguin ISD's chief communications officer, says the district wanted to give parents and the community a say in that start date. After offering a community survey that was made available for 10 days, Hoffmann says the district now has the results in which to steer from. "The calendar was up for community review and we received 844 respondents who were in favor of the currently approved calendar with the August 20th start date and an additional 436 respondents were in favor of the calendar with the earlier August 13th start date. With that being said at this point and time, the Seguin ISD will plan for an August 20th start date and the calendar that we've had out for a few months now will be in place," said Hoffmann.
Hoffmann says the adjusted calendar, or calendar B was again just a way to better offset any changes should they arise this coming fall. "Due to our school buildings being closed this spring and students having to adapt to remote learning, we created a secondary calendar for consideration and that calendar had a start date of August 13. So essentially, it had five additional instruction days added with the idea and the logic that students can get back into the classroom earlier and adjust and just have a little bit more instruction time after missing two and half months worth," said Hoffmann. Now although the Seguin ISD will continue with its originally approved school calendar, Hoffmann says things could still always change. "Naturally things might happen over the summer with the COVID-19 pandemic and if so, we might have to make some adjustments but as of right now, we are pretty well set on that original calendar with the August 20 first day of school," said Hoffmann. District officials say they thank all those Seguin ISD community members who at the end of May took the time to respond and provide feedback to their online calendar survey.

Council members to discuss future of city's wastewater treatment plants By Darren Dunn
(Seguin) -- The Seguin City Council tonight is expected to receive a presentation of a plan that calls for the city to abandon its Walnut Branch Wastewater Treatment Plant. If the old sewage plant is closed, the city would have to expand the capacity of its water water treatment plant along Geronimo Creek, on the other side of town.
In other business, the council is scheduled to receive an update on the city's response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The city reopened all of its offices to the public on Monday. Most of those offices were closed to the public over the last several weeks as
The presentation is expected to look at the limited capacity at the Walnut Branch facility and discuss the pros and cons of closing it and expanding the Geronimo Creek Water Water Treatment Plant to handle all of the city's sewage. The expanded capacity at the Geronimo Creek plant will also help the city meet future demands for sewer service outside the city limits.
a way to help reduce the spread of the virus. The city also helped to sponsor a mobile testing site, held on Monday in Max Starcke Park. The council meets at 5:30 p.m. today Seguin City Hall. Council members initially planned to finalize the city's plans for the busy Fourth of July weekend in Seguin, but that meeting and discussion has been moved to a special session scheduled for 5:30 p.m. on Thursday at City Hall. Governor Greg Abbott is expected to provide some additional guidance on Fourth of July celebrations on Wednesday, and Thursday's special council meeting will give the council to adjust any plans moving forward.
Chief encourages peaceful protests, encourages residents to squash threats before allowing them to happen NICHOLS, continued from page 1 Nichols says social media is a great tool for policing and to help folks unite. But unfortunately, it can also be used in harmful ways against a community if not careful. "I would love to be able to track down everyone that is making these comments and if something were to happen, I think we would start going after folks that spread it -the organizers of something like this -- again, we are hoping that it certainly doesn't' happen here. As far as how they can share
information with us if folks are concerned, we do have a social media presence, Twitter and Facebook. Unfortunately, we don't want them 24/7. We try our best to watch them so if people send us messages on Facebook, we may not get them for 24 hours but if there is a serious concern, obviously call our nonemergency number 379-2123 and share their information with us and if we think it's something we need to take action on, we will certainly get on it. If we start hearing from 10 folks saying the same stuff, obviously there is something going on and we have to be ready for it. But yes, I would hesitate asking people don't spread it on social media if you are not
into that stuff because the more people spread it, it starts making the rounds and then it gets a life of its (own). So, give us the information -- if you feel someone is in danger or if someone is going to start something that is not right, let us know about it. We will do the best to vet it and see if we can't squash it before it happens," said Nichols. Again, during the threat against the Seguin Walmart store on Sunday, officers were able to defend the property. An arrest was reported at the store that evening, but Nichols confirms that the incident was unrelated to the indicated threats. Much of
the crowd that assembled that night outside store was simply described as people who wanted to see what was happening In the meantime, many other cities across the country continue to descend into chaos in the week since the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis. Floyd died while a white police officer was caught on video pressing his knee into the 46-year-old black man's neck. Many of these destructive riots have since targeted the law enforcement community as well as many businesses throughout the nation.

The Elite 90 award is given during each NCAA sport's national championship event. The NCAA conducts 90 national championships each year. The Elite 90 is awarded to the top studentathlete at each national championship. The award is given to the participating studentathlete with the highest cumulative grade point average. Ties are broken by the number of hours a student-athlete has earned. The SCAC Elite 19 awards are modeled after the NCAA's Elite 90 awards. Hernandez and the Bulldogs were 19-1 and ranked second in the DIII when the 2020 season was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. A three-time SCAC Academic Honor Roll award recipient and a 2019 SCAC First Team All-Conference selection,
Hernandez is a career .340 hitter with a career on-base percentage of .412. She has 37 stolen bases in 42 career attempts. In the Bulldogs' national championship season, Hernandez hit .367, stole 17 bases, and scored 30 runs. She posted a 2019 onbase percentage of .451. Hernandez was a First-Team All-SCAC selection in 2019. Last season, Hernandez batted .367 from the plate with 30 runs scored, 29 hits and nine RBI to help lead the Bulldogs to their sixth-straight SCAC Softball Championship.
Hernandez played a key role in the program's first-ever NCAA Division III National Championship. The Bulldogs defeated Emory twice on May 27, 2019 in the best-of-three championship series to earn the title and complete a stretch during which they won 19 of 20 games. In their run to the national championship,
TLU went undefeated in the NCAA Marshall (Texas) Regional and 2-1 against Linfield College at the McMinnville (Ore.) Super Regional. Add their three victories en route to their sixth-straight conference title, the Bulldogs were 13-1 overall in the postseason in 2019. TLU went 18-5 against teams that were ranked or received votes in the NFCA Top 25 in 2019. The Bulldogs had wins over Birmingham-Southern College (twice), Eastern Connecticut State University, East Texas Baptist University (twice), Emory University (twice), Linfield (twice), Southwestern University (five times), Transylvania University (twice), Trine University, and Williams College. Due to the cancellation of the 2020 spring season, the criteria for the SCAC Elite 19 honor was modified. The award is presented to the student-athlete who has completed the equivalent of at least 60 credit hours at his or her current institution
and has at least a cumulative 3.25 GPA.
For this spring only, an All-SCAC honor at any point of the student-athlete's career was enough to satisfy the requirement that the student-athlete must be an allconference award winner. Normally, the student-athlete must have earned AllSCAC honors in his/her sport for that particular season. The SCAC Elite 19 award was established prior to the 2018-19 academic year and is meant to recognize the best of the best within each conference sponsored-sport as it relates to both academic and athletic achievement. Hernandez is the third Bulldog to earn an SCAC Elite 19 award. She joins TLU Baseball's Cullen Motsinger, the SCAC Baseball Elite 19 award winner for 2019, and Jalen Starks, the SCAC Men's Track & Field Elite 19 award winner for 2020.
