Councilman calls for Letting their community to stand against racism voices be heard "So, I want to speak as a member of the clergy but also as a member of this council. I also want to speak acknowledging that I know that I am a white male. It's obvious but I also want to acknowledge that that gives me certain privileges and I think it's important to acknowledge that. Being so has afforded me employment and other options that I might not have had, had I not been," said Roy. Roy says this conversation about race is again long overdue in Seguin and across the nation. He says black people are suffering in ways that white Americans can't imagine. The pain, anger, and fear experienced by African Americans is something that has to be heard and acknowledged.
Jeremy Roy By Darren Dunn
"I speak this evening because I don't want to betray my African-American brothers and sisters any longer. So, I’m speaking and I'm speaking specifically about my black friends. I want to acknowledge that there are people in our country that are suffering deeply from racism and I want to acknowledge that innocent lives have been lost as a result and that that absolutely breaks my heart and I want to acknowledge that there are those of us that want to speak from a place and this isn't criticism but speak from a place of seemingly willful ignorance and at times when we attempt to speak to issues of race, we come up very short and sometimes even make the situation worse," said Roy.
(Seguin) -- A member of the Seguin City Council made an impassioned plea on Tuesday for more people in the community to stand up for the rights of African Americans, and to take a stand against Roy says he's seen some evidence that racism in all its forms. people are already starting to listen. He says Councilman Jeremy Roy says he came Seguin Police Chief Terry Nichols has been a across a recent quote from Dr. Martin Luther great example of that during this time. King Jr., which states that "there comes a Nichols has spoke openly about his belief time when silence is betrayal." Roy, who is that the officers in Minnesota committed a also an ordained minister, says he can no crime when they allowed George Floyd to longer be silent and it's time for him and die while in police custody. Floyd, who was cuffed and prone on the ground, had officers others to step up and speak out.
with knees on his body, including one officer, Derek Chauvin, who kept his knee on Floyd's neck for nearly eight minutes. The officers were all fired, and Chauvin now faces murder and manslaughter charges in Minneapolis. Additional charges are expected to be filed against the other officers involved, but those officers have not yet been arrested. Roy says Chief Nichols has tried to bring his honest perspective to the conversation locally, including talking about the need for the police and the African American community to come together to start trying to heal some of these old wounds. Roy thanked Chief Nichols for stepping forward to try to help during this difficult time. "I have seen strength in your actions and I've seen compassion in your responses to the issues of late and more importantly, I see in you a desire to be slow to speak, slow to anger and quick to listen and eager to learn and eager to break down barriers all the while protecting our community," said Roy.
Roy also addressed some controversy surrounding an event held on Monday night in Central Park. The community has been blasted by some on social media for hosting an event that they described as "tone deaf." The "All Souls Matter" prayer event prayed for George Floyd and his family, for victims of racial injustice and it also prayed for police officers and firefighters in the community. The emergency officials joined the event by driving up together along River Street. That parade of vehicles led critics to suggest that Seguin was hosting a parade for police officers, and ignoring the Black Lives Matter movement and the death of George Floyd and others who have died in violent encounters with police. Young man surprised with his very own community parade
By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera
(Marion) -- The COVID-19 quarantine has doubt given birth to the popularity of car parades and drive-thru celebrations. They, of course, are organized and made possible thanks to a few close family and friends. But what if it is a whole community that not only keeps the secret but also comes out to surprise you on your 12th birthday. That's exactly what happened for Jordan Alden, of Marion. Alden was surprised with a parade of his own Wednesday afternoon outside his home on Lower Seguin Road. Alden enjoyed the parade featuring dozens and dozens of entries. However, just minutes before the parade began, Alden was also surprised in his yard with a special visit by the San Antonio Spurs Coyote who stood beside him as participants wished him well from their vehicles.
truck, Barry's Towing, representatives from Marion ISD and several vehicles from the Green Valley Special Utility. Alden, an aspiring actor, even got a special visit by some of his cast members from a horror movie that he stars in called, "Butcher's Bluff." Alden admits that because of COVID-19, he wasn't too excited about his birthday this year. However, after being surprised with a parade of his own, that obisvouly has all changed. "All my friends couldn't be able to come but the whole community came instead which was way cooler," said Alden.
Making sure that her son gets the birthday he deserves is Alden's mom, Marla Makley-Alden. Marla says the show of support during these times is why she believes the Marion community is so Some of the parade participants included the Marion office, McGruff the Crime Dog from the Guadalupe wonderful. Roy also announced an initiative being started by some of the predominantly African American churches in Seguin. Pastors like Jimmie Flakes, of Second Baptist Church; and Arthur J. Malone Jr., of New St. James Baptist Church are opening up their congregations to police officers this Sunday. Chief Nichols and some of his officers have agreed to be guests on Sunday. It's an attempt to begin the dialogue that Roy suggests is necessary for changes to be made. Roy made his comments during the citizens to be heard portion of Tuesday's regular council meeting.

Fauci Says The U.S Should Have A "Couple Hundred Million" Doses of COVD-19 Vaccine By 2021
(Washington, DC) -- The Department of Agriculture is saying it has found the first confirmed case of coronavirus in a dog in the US. A German shepherd in New York tested positive after displaying symptoms of the virus, but is expected to make a full recovery, the USDA said. The agency says one of its owners tested positive for COVID-19 and the other tested positive for antibodies. Other animals that have tested positive in the US include two cats, a tiger, and a lion. (Baltimore, MD) -- The United States is passing 106-thousand deaths from COVID-19. That's the latest tally from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. The university reported more than 860 deaths on Tuesday, along with more than 15-thousand cases, bringing the total number of cases to over one-point-eight-million. The number of cases worldwide is more than six-point-three million.

(Undated) -- Over a dozen states are reporting an increase in new coronavirus cases. Arizona had about 36-hundred new cases of the respiratory illness last week, about 50-percent more than the week before. Virginia, Alabama, and South Carolina also saw significant bumps in numbers. There's also new concerns that cases could jump even more with protests and unrest that have gained steam across the country in the past week.
(Undated) -- Dr. Anthony Fauci says the U.S. is on track to getting "a couple hundred million doses" of a COVID-19 vaccine by early 2021. The nations top infectious disease specialist made the revelation Tuesday during a virtual Q and A with the Journal of the American Medical Association. Fauci added by mid-summer, the possible formula is expected to be tested on nearly 30thousand volunteers between 18 and 55-years-old. Volunteers also include people over that age bracket and with underlying health conditions.
