this to be held in Seguin. Yesuf says the event was all about standing up for what's right and standing up for Black people everywhere. "What I was hoping to accomplish here today is to fight for human rights. Yes, all souls matter but all souls can't matter, unless black lives matter and I just feel like us, the community, we bring the people together and tell our truth and just preach that this system is corrupt, the government is corrupt and that we need a change. 2020 is that year of change and we need change," said Yesuf. Due to the rebuild of Matador Stadium, this year’s live graduation ceremony will take place at 8 p.m. Saturday at Canyon High School in New Braunfels. SHS Principal Hector Esquivel says although the school knew that the ceremony would be at a different site, they never imagined that the event itself would be at risk of cancellation due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However today, they are pleased to host the event for the school’s 467 graduates and their families. Of course, due to the new location, social distancing and other safety measures, Esquivel says there will be a few things families will need to keep in mind as they make their way into the stadium and graduation ceremony. "I would like parents to be very well informed that there is a lot of different procedures that

One of them is t h a t everybody has to have parking passes to even get in to the gates at the stadium and once they are in, they have to some bands that we distributed to the students for each one of their family members. They get to get up to five so everybody has to have one of those to go in and of course, we will be screening them briefly as they have had in other COVID-19 locations about their current health situation," said Esquivel. Now while things like balloons and noise makers will not be allowed, Esquivel says seniors this year only will get the chance to celebrate by decorating their caps. "We are allowing our students to decorate their caps this year for graduation to commemorate the Class of 2020, the historic graduation that almost didn't happen so we are letting them know that they can decorate it to send thankful messages to their friends and family for helping them along," said Esquivel. Top students at SHS recognized Marion ISD seniors to take part for academic excellence in live ceremony this weekend Legore says he’s honored to lead this very deserving group of students and is humbled by the recognition.
"It definitely was a lot of hard work. I would say it was more hard work than like pure intelligence. Being valedictorian does not by anyway mean that I consider myself to be the smartest person at the school. I know a few people who I would consider to be smarter than myself. I just happened to spend way more time than I probably should have cared about obtaining that title," said Legore. Legore says although they were not in a classroom, there was much to learn these last couple of months. Many of those messages were happily shared during his speech to fellow classmates during Sunday’s virtual Senior Celebration. However, since that time, Legore says much more has developed across the nation and throughout the world.

By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (Marion) – Marion High School will be wrapping up its school year with its own live graduation ceremony for its seniors this weekend. The graduation ceremony will be held at 8 p.m. Saturday on the school’s home field at Veterans Stadium. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the district had been planning a ceremony at Seguin High School’s Goldie Harris Gymnasium for late June. However, after the loosening
of some safety and social distancing measures by Texas Governor Greg Abbott, the district announced last month that it would be returning the ceremony to Marion High School. A total of 106 seniors are set to receive their diplomas this Saturday. To help share in the celebration, live streaming will be available at vimeo.com/423634863. Links will also be available on the Marion ISD and Marion High School’s Facebook pages.

Governor announces third phase of reopening the state
By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (Seguin) -- Texas Governor Greg Abbott Wednesday announced the third phase of the State of Texas’ plan to safely open the economy while containing the spread of COVID-19. Under Phase III, effective immediately, all businesses in Texas will be able to operate at up to 50 percent capacity, with very limited exceptions. Businesses that previously have been able to operate at 100 percent capacity may continue to do so, and most outdoor areas are not subject to capacity limits. He says "the people of Texas continue to prove that we can safely and responsibly open our state for business while containing COVID-19 and keeping our state safe." He adds "As anticipated, the new positive cases that we are seeing are largely the result of isolated hot spots in nursing homes, jails, and meat packing plants. Thanks to the effectiveness of our Surge Response Teams, we
have the ability to contain those hot spots while opening up Texas for business. As we begin Phase III, I ask all Texans and Texas businesses to continue following the standard health protocols and to heed the guidance of our state and federal officials who continue to closely monitor COVID19. If we remain vigilant, we will continue to mitigate the spread of this virus, protect public health, and get more Texans back to work and their daily activities."
Special provisions have been also been made for outdoor gatherings, such as Fourth of July celebrations. Abbott states, however, that it is imperative that local officials and public health officials collaborate on those safe standards. The city of Seguin's decisions for its events were expected to be decided on Thursday night. The results of that special meeting were not available as of press time. The latest details, however, can be heard today on Seguin Radio KWED.
Effective today, all businesses currently operating at 25 percent capacity can expand their occupancy to 50 percent with certain exceptions.
Meanwhile, all businesses should continue to follow the minimum standard health protocols from DSHS.

employee is home resting and is expected to make a full recovery. They say the employee came into work, followed each of their screening guidelines with no reported symptoms. They
say it wasn’t until later in that day, that the employee started feeling bad and was sent home. The employee then
reported to their doctor and was tested. That test came back positive. Sheriff’s officials say they are continuing to follow all CDC recommended guidelines and will continue to be vigilant as they monitor this situation.

There really wasn't all the pressure on him, he just took it in his own hands and he handled it well. But now he's starting to see that he's got a lot of other kids, young men, beside him that are right there with him and helping him out, 110 percent." Each of Lifegate's past three titles has come under a different head coach, with John Rabon handing the reins to Kenny Coffman after retiring in 2017, and Coffman turning the keys over to Stout after leading the program to the 2018 TCAL triumph. Rabon served as an assistant on the 2019 staff with Stout.

Crowd assembles to demand racial justice BLACK LIVES MATTER, continued from page 1
The Black Lives Matter protest came two days after a prayer event in Central Park that prayed for George Floyd and other victims of racial violence. That event, dubbed an All Souls Matter prayer; however, also prayed for police officers and fire fighters in the community. The images of the first responders rolling up to the prayer service on Monday, upset many of those in the Black Lives Matter movement. Wilson says after seeing that All Souls event, he knew that Black Lives Matter had to host something in Seguin, so that the message wouldn't be diluted. He says this is a problem that is impacting Black people, and that's not where the focus needs to be. "The parade that we've seen the other day, it was just kind of like a slap in the face to the community of what we've got going on around the world. This is the only time in our whole history of ever living that every 50 state has come together and protested about all black lives matter and yes, all lives do matter because we are all God's children at the end of the day. We are all brothers and sisters, but the black people are the ones being oppressed right now. What happened to George Floyd was uncalled for -Sandra Bland, Emmett Till -- it goes way back and we've been on this oppression for over 400-500 years and now, it's really getting bad to where everyone is standing up and this is what we wanted to see and when we saw that parade praying for the cops, it's not the cops because there are some cops that I know are good people but at the end of the day, it's them cops who are treating us bad," said Wilson. The pair was also critical of those who they say are not listening to what's actually being said by the Black Lives Matter movement. They again stated that, of course, all lives matter, but it's only black people who are being killed by the police or in some cases by white vigilantes, like the recent murder of Ahmaud Arbery in Georgia. Wilson says white Americans often says things like, "why don't you just comply," but he says there is overwhelming evidence that compliance doesn't matter. He says George Floyd appeared to comply with police
officers in Minneapolis, Minnesota, but he still ended up dead. Wilson says there are many other cases where compliance simply wasn't the issue, but yet another black person still died while in custody, or died while having some interaction with police. Wilson says that's why white Americans need to see the role that they play in this, and they need everyone to understand that things must change.
"No matter what they say for us to do and we comply, they want peace but we are not getting any peace. We want justice but we are not getting justice. We are getting blood. We are getting bloodshed and it's just crazy, man," said Wilson. Yesuf also addressed those who complain about the rioting that has taken place during some protests in other parts of the state and country. Most of the protests have been peaceful, like the one Wednesday night here in Seguin. Yesuf says no one is calling for rioting or looting, but he says people who focus only on property damage are losing sight of the real issue. He says those buildings can be replaced, but George Floyd, and black victims like him, will never get a chance to come home again. He encouraged people who are saying those things to stop doing that, and to instead try opening their hearts and minds to the challenge that's really facing America at this time. "Those people are corrupt in the mind and lost in the mind man and if you can't see love, then I don't know what to tell you," said Yesuf. The crowd started small in Central Park, but continued to grow through the evening, eventually leaving the park and heading for the Sebastopol House historic site on West Court Street. They marched to the site chanting "hands up, don't shoot!" They say the Sebastopol is believed to have once had slaves on that property. The event eventually made its way back to Central Park for a rally, prayer, and the taking of a knee. This was the first Black Lives Matter protest in Seguin, but Yesuf and Wilson says it won't be their last. They say they will continue to host events like this in their hometown to help bring about the change necessary to keep black people safe. Seguin Police officers met with Yesuf and Wilson prior to the start of the march and also shared water with the marchers. Police Chief Terry Nichols says they wanted to cooperate in every way they could. He says they were there to make sure that the protesters were able to peacefully assemble.

Those two years of age and younger do not need a ticket. This past Sunday, each graduating senior was recognized as part of a virtual Senior celebration ceremony. This weekend, Esquivel says it’s about affording each student the experience of walking the stage.
“That was the point of contagion. They wanted to walk the stage so they are going to get to do that and it’s going to be probably shorter than most ceremonies but it is still going to be very nice, very family oriented and I think that we are going to be able to celebrate our Class of 2020 as we had thought about since we started school this year. So, we are pretty excited about it,” said Esquivel.
they have conveyed that to us what they want to do in life and I think it’s pretty exciting when you turn back and look what did the Class of 2020 offer beyond high school, I think we are going to see a lot of very productive individuals come out of this class,” said Esquivel.

Top students celebrated in Seguin High School TOP GRADS, continued from page 2 "In everything that has happened this past week, I guess I just want people to know that life doesn't end after high school. I personally always thought of high school as more of a steppingstone onto like the greater life and I think if people really want to bring some kind of change, they need to see things in the same way. It would be easier to think that after high school, you get your summer and you don't want to look into the future but at this point, that is definitely something that is necessarily and something that we all have to do if we want to do anything meaningful," said Legore. As for his future, Legore aspires to one day receive his juris doctorate and plans on attending Trinity University where he will major in political science. Also leading the SHS Senior Class of 2020 is this year’s Salutatorian Alfred “AJ” Burns. Achieving academic success alongside Legore and Burns are the other students that make up the Top 10 percent of this year’s graduating class. SHS Principal Hector
Esquivel says this entire batch of students should especially be recognized for making the grade even through these trying months of their senior year. "It sets you apart academically from the other students in the class but also shows that you put in the hard work, dedication, the effort to be able to place yourself among the top 10 percent of the entire senior class so I think there definitely was four years of work put into this. A lot of students taking a lot of advanced classes to be able to achieve this so it's a very important honor and distinction for all members that are in the top 10 percent so I'm very proud of them. They have definitely demonstrated that they belong just based on their level of classes that they have taken so again, it's a very i n c r e d i b l e achievement for those kids," said Esquivel. The eight other students making the grade for the prestigious Top 10 list include students Andy McDowall, Timothy Polcyn, Leslie Muenchow, Savannah Luensmann, Cheney Stephenson, Julianna Harrington, Alexia Richardson and Kate Sherwood.
