City chooses architect for MAJOR renovation of Starcke Park Golf Course
(Seguin) -- The Max Starcke Park Golf Course is slated to eventually undergo a total overhaul. The Seguin City Council has taken another step toward that major renovation plan, which will see the golf course close for months. The council last week agreed to hire Ross Golf Design to handle the architectural designs for the updated course, and to
oversee the construction that will be needed in Starcke Park.
Bruce Allen, general manager of the city’s Starcke Park Golf Course, says this is the next step in the city’s plan to create a first-rate golf course for the community. He says what started as an irrigation improvement project, eventually grew into a much bigger plan for the golf course.
“About a year ago, the council approved $1.5 million of American Rescue Plan Act, ARPA funds for irrigation improvement. With that in mind, we hired the National Golf Foundation to come and do a survey of the golf course to see what else we needed, and they presented their findings to the council in August, and they recommended a tee-to-
green renovation. The first step of that is the architect selection and that’s why we’re here tonight,” said Allen.
Allen says when they started looking at the irrigation work, it immediately became clear that they needed to do much more than that. He says that’s why they are opting for a total overhaul of the entire golf course. Starcke, pg. 3

Seguin Fire/EMS Department getting ballistic equipment for most dangerous scenarios
(Seguin) -- Active shooter events and other acts of mass violence have made the world a more dangerous place for everyone, including those who respond to calls for help. That, of course, includes law enforcement officials, who may run into a hail of gunfire, but it also includes firefighters and paramedics who are also called out to those scenes. The Seguin Fire/EMS Department is taking some extra steps to try to keep their personnel safe in the very dangerous situations.
Assistant Fire Chief Garrick Herbert recently explained to the Seguin City Council why the fire department was seeking funding to purchase ballistic wear and other supplies to deal with these situations.
“Unfortunately, we find
ourselves facing a lot of new threats these days in the field. A lot of them are things that we wished we didn’t have to deal with. A lot of violent incidents, and I know we all see that on the news on the regular. Currently, our organization does not have a steady supply of ballistic vests and helmets, and those are part of the recommendations for any entry teams on these types of violent incidents. Fire departments, as you know, no longer sit outside and wait for SWAT or anything like that. We go in with police now, so that we can have the greatest survivability profile for the folks that we’re trying to treat. This equipment helps to make sure that we have what we need to keep our
responders safe,” said Herbert.
The council approved a $75,000 budget amendment that will be used to purchase the equipment.
In addition to the purchase of equipment, local first responders are also doing all that they can to prepare for these events. Herbert says the city’s emergency response team is an active participant in the Guadalupe Active Threat Committee.
They also recently participated in a large-scale county wide drill at Seguin High School. He says there are also monthly preparatory meetings and drills conducted, so if there is an act of mass violence in this community, then they are ready to respond appropriately.

continued.
“People ask us about ‘why not just do the irrigation?’ Well, the grass on the front-nine was planted in 1938. Nobody has any idea what that was, other than common (grass). So, there’s not too many golf courses that have grass from 1938. If we just did the irrigation and you wanted to make the course nicer five years later, you’d have to tear up some of that irrigation and start all over. So, it would be better if we just did it all at once,” said Allen.
Allen says they looked at a number of proposals for the design and construction work. He says Ross Golf Design, based in Austin, offered the best overall vision for the course. He says once the design is complete and the construction work is started, the golf course will be closed at that time.
“We would probably start killing all the old grass off in August of 2024, and then start growing new grass in April and May of 2025, and then reopen in October of 2025,” said Allen.
City Manager Steve Parker says this work will make the golf course viable for decades. He says the community deserves to have a first-rate municipal golf course. He says once the work is done Parker says the
city knows there will need to be additional investments made to make sure the golf course is operated the right way.
“There’s a challenge when you have mutated grasses like we do. It’s very hard to come up with a mowing height, the herbicide schedule, (and) watering. You know they’re all different. The results of that (study), it also stood out that we have not given Bruce the adequate things to -- as far as staffing levels comparative to other communities and golf courses – to get that top tier golf course that we all want. If we are going to put our money where our mouth is and to do something really nice and high end, then we’ve got to invest in our own stuff. (This is) stuff that hasn’t been done in 30 years with mutated grasses and all those types of things. The council has been very good over last few years. We’ve updated our equipment, we’ve updated salaries, (and) we’ve added some personnel. We were going to need to add more once this project is finished,” said Parker.
The golf course renovation project will cost approximately $6 million. Now that Ross Golf Design has been hired, that redesign work can begin. Once those plans are finished, the city can decide if it will officially close the course and begin the major construction work that will be a part of that plan.

11th Ranked Navarro Lady Panthers FALL to 5th Ranked Fredericksburg
(Geronimo) -- The Fredericksburg Lady Billies used a barrage of three pointers in the first half to build a big half time lead and never looked back in taking down the Navarro Lady Panthers 69-46 in Geronimo on Friday night.
Fredericksburg, the 5th ranked team in the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches Class 4A poll, drained 10 baskets from behind the arc in the first two quarters accounting for 30 of their 44 points in the first half as they took a 23 point lead into the locker room. Lady Billie sophomore Kirsten Hartmann had four three point buckets in the half as Fredericksburg scored 31 points in the 2nd quarter.
Navarro, the 11th ranked team in the coaches poll, had a 9-8 lead late in the 1st quarter but Fredericksburg would go on a 17-0 run near the end of the quarter through the first few minutes of the 2nd period to take control
of the game. The Lady Billies would finish the half outscoring the Lady Panthers 36-13.
The Panthers would draw closer in the third quarter as they outpointed Fredericksburg 18-13 to cut the Lady Billie lead to 57-39, but Fredericksburg would force a couple of Navarro turnovers to start the 4th quarter and go on a quick 6-0 run in the first 90 seconds of the period to push their lead back up to 24 points. The teams would trade baskets and free throws the rest of game.
Senior Tatum Harborth lead Navarro with 20 points, her younger sister sophomore Tegan had 17. Hartmann had 19 points to lead Fredericksburg, her older sister senior Ella chipped in with 13.
The Lady Panthers dropped to 5-3 in District 27-4A while the Lady Billies improved to 7-1. Navarro will next play at San Antonio Davenport on Tuesday.

Americans’ View Of U.S.
Healthcare Diminishes
(Washington, DC) -- Less than half of Americans have a favorable view of the U.S. healthcare system. A new Gallup survey shows just 48-percent of respondents said the system is excellent or good. It’s the first time since 2001 less than half of Americans were complimentary of the quality of U.S. healthcare. The slight majority now rates U.S. healthcare as subpar, including 31-percent who say it’s fair and 21-percent who describe it as “poor.”

Young Pennsylvanian Is “Sickest Man In Ireland”
(Harrisburg, PA) -- A 21-year-old Pennsylvania man who went to Ireland for Christmas with his family is now fighting for his life in an Irish hospital. Sandra Small of Levittown tells the Morning Call dot com her son Matt has been stricken with several kinds of viral infections that have crashed his immune system. His doctor told his mother the young graphic designer has been listed “as the sickest person in Ireland” as they continue to find ways to treat him. He can’t be flown home because his medical team says it’d be too risky. A neighbor has launched a GoFundMe page seeking 50-thousand dollars for his family’s expenses and Matt’s care while he remains in a Dublin ICU unit.
Study: Spice Jars Germiest Spot In Kitchen
(Washington, DC) -- A new study finds the biggest germ-collector in the kitchen is the space rack. Agriculture Department researchers examined how people preparing turkey burgers cross-contaminated various kitchen surfaces. They found that spice jars used in preparing the meal were far and away the germiest things, with 48-percent harboring bacteria from the turkey. Study authors say that while people might know it’s important to clean cutting boards and wipe down handles, they probably don’t think about what their hands deposit on the spice jars.
Another Denver-Area Library Will Close Due To Meth Contamination
(Littleton, CO) -- Another Denver-area public library is being closed for a good cleaning after high levels of meth contamination were found in its restrooms. The City of Littleton announced the closure of Bemis Public Library yesterday. Officials said the closure was being done as a precaution, though library staffers haven’t seen evidence of drug use in the building. More testing will be done in other areas of the library during the closure. Libraries in Boulder and Englewood have also closed over the last month so that areas contaminated by meth could be cleaned.
