(Seguin) -- A May 2022 bond election might just be on the table for the Seguin ISD. The school board tonight will consider calling a $7.5 million bond election for the construction of a new baseball and softball complex at the Seguin High School campus. The item was voted down by voters just this past November. District officials tonight are expected to discuss and provide more details about bringing the sports complex back to the table.

The school board tonight is also slated to discuss the resignation of longtime Board President Cinde Thomas-Jimenez. Jimenez, for the last few years, has served as the board president and until recently, declined another nomination for the position.

On top of accepting her resignation, trustees will be

considering their options for filling the seat being left behind in District 3. Other items on the agenda tonight include a bond update on all existing bond projects -- more specifically progress for the final year of renovation at A.J. Briesemeister Middle School. The district also looks to consider and approve a contract with PB Group for architectural design and construction phase services for both the construction of a new elementary campus and renovation at Barnes Middle School. Both of these bond projects are the newest ones approved by voters in November.

The meeting gets underway at 6:30 p.m. in the Seguin ISD Board Room located in Central Offices in Oak Park Mall.

Major improvements to State Highway 46 are to be discussed this week

Guadalupe, Comal County residents invited to take part in various public meetings this week

(Seguin) – State Highway 46 will be the talk of the towns this week for both Guadalupe and Comal Counties. The public is being invited by the Texas Department of Transportation to attend both inperson and virtual public meetings to discuss the proposed improvements to SH 46 from I-35 to I-10.

TxDOT officials say improvements along SH 46 are needed to meet current and future traffic volumes and regional population growth. They say the purpose of the project is to reduce congestion, improve mobility and increase safety along SH 46.

TxDOT is proposing to expand SH 46 with operational and corridor improvements including additional lanes, overpasses, and intersection improvements. The proposed expansion also includes limited ramp reconstruction along I-35.

The meetings will be held in person and virtually at locations in both Seguin and New Braunfels. The in-person meeting/open house in Seguin will be held

from 5 to 7 pm on Thursday, Jan. 26 at the Big Red Barn, located at 390 Cordova Rd. in Seguin. The inperson meeting/open house in New Braunfels will be held today from 5 to 7 pm at the New Braunfels Civic/Convention Center, located at 375 S. Castell Ave. in New Braunfels.

The virtual public meeting will consist of a prerecorded video presentation and will include both audio and visual components. The presentation will be posted online today at 5 pm.

City of Seguin officials are encouraging as many residents as possible to hear and chime in on the discussion. Any construction being proposed on SH 46 will not only impact those living along the highway but those that utilize the roadway for their daily commute.

Buddenhagen has been in an induced coma and suffers a brain bleed from a fractured skull, broken ribs, a broken hand, broken pelvis, and broken tailbone. He also reportedly lost his leg on impact.

The man’s sister Angela Hall tells the Seguin Daily News that because the road to recovery will be a difficult one, she has established a Go Fund Me account so that folks can help support both his wife, Meagan and teenager daughter.

“Meagan can’t work because she has to be there with Mike and because she is his voice at this point and she lives 45 minutes from the hospital – a loss of wages as well because he can’t work now and he’s a diesel mechanic and when he comes out of this this, we don’t know how long it’s going to be – he lost his leg – either way the outcome of this story, it’s going to be a lose, lose situation almost for him and financially that can just add to the stress and people’s faith when they are faced with an incident, an accident like this,” said Hall.

Hall says the family is just simply grateful to have him survive that crash. She says after being struck by the 18-wheeler during the early morning hours of Sunday, Jan.15, the fast thinking of Seguin Police Officer Justin Morin was able to save his life by placing a tourniquet on his leg. Officer Morin was patrolling the 2500 block of State Highway 123 Bypass when he witnessed the crash and provided immediate aid to Buddenhagen.

“Oh my gosh, I already left him a message and I literally cried on the phone, and I just told him thank you for being at the right place at the right time. God knew that my brother was going to need somebody like that that had the experience to do what he was able to do, and I told him he was a true hero, and we are just so grateful and thankful. Like I told him, I will never be able to repay him for what he did

for my brother, and he said when he gets better, he’s going to come visit him. He said it was really healing for him too to hear from my sister-in-law because he didn’t know. Once he was taken from flight for life, he goes ‘I’ve kind of had nightmares’ and he goes, ‘I didn’t know what had happened to him so it was bothering him.’ So, it actually helped him move forward with the healing knowing that what he did actually saved a life. We need more heroes like him in this world for sure,” said Hall.

Hall says she knows firsthand of the peace of mind that Go Fund Me accounts can provide to families facing challenges and tragedies. She says it’s a safe way to help those whether you know them or not.

“I have had firsthand experience. I unfortunately lost my 26-year-old son three and a half months ago in a motorcycle accident and he died on the scene and I had some coaches that I work with that started up a Go Fund for me so that I didn’t have to worry about any additional expenses from not being able to work, being able to be present, the funeral expenses, all of the expenses that came up with that and I know how expensive it was and how much of a blessing it was for everybody that came together for me to do the Go Fund Me. It literally changed the experience when you are trying to deal with an accident –something that you can’t prevent. So from going through my own experience, this is just one of the fastest ways that I figured that we could help and everybody could join together and whether they donate $10 or $20 or they donate whatever they feel called to donate or share the Go Fund Me because it’s a long road to recovery and we just don’t know the extent of what’s happening and what’s going to take place moving forward,” said Hall.

Santos D. Menchaca, Sr. of Seguin, Texas was called Home to the Lord on January 14, 2023, at the age of 77 surrounded by his wife, children, and grandchildren. Santos was born July 10, 1945, to Jose and Francisca Menchaca. He married his wife Janie in 1969. Together they had 5 beautiful children.

Santos was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Guadalupe Menchaca, Jose Menchaca, and his daughter-in-law, Jessica Menchaca.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Janie Menchaca; daughter Irene Gil (Darius); son Steven Menchaca; son Santos Menchaca, Jr. (Michelle); daughter Sonia Menchaca (Johnathan); and daughter Jennifer Menchaca (Gary). Grandchildren: Trey Menchaca, Nathaniel Menchaca (Delilah), Arianna Menchaca, Kaitlin Menchaca, Maddie Gil, Miriam Urrutia, Caleb Sanchez, Max Flores Jr., Alessandra Sanchez, Gabriel Brady, and Leeandra Mueller (Nathan). He is also survived by his sisters Concha Gonzales and Carmel Mancilla and brothers Adelaido Menchaca, Juan Menchaca Sr., and Jesus Menchaca and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, other loving family members, and dear friends.

Santos was a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend. He started his career as a professional floor installer. After retiring from the floor business, he became the family babysitter and chauffer. Although the family joked about “Grandpa’s daycare”, he enjoyed any time he was able to spend with his family, especially taking care of his grandkids. He attended every school function for each of his grandchildren until he was no longer able. His daily ritual included taking the grandkids to school, eating breakfast tacos with his friends, and then going home to sit on the front porch to listen to music. He also enjoyed

watching the Cowboys and Spurs or old western movies. If he wasn’t at home, he and Janie were riding around town in his “daycare” van. No matter what the situation was, he was sure to make you laugh and put a smile on your face. He loved his family unconditionally and they always looked up to and admired him.

Friedrich “Fritz” Klein, age 96 of Marion, passed away on January 13, 2023. Fritz was born on April 8, 1926 in Mramorak, Yugoslavia to Elisabeth (Kemle) and Johann Klein. After moving to the United States, he proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. He will be remembered as a jack of all trades, working as an H-Vac engineer his entire career for different companies.

In his spare time, Fritz enjoyed polka dancing and fishing. He loved being a “softball grandpa” to his grandchildren and never missed a game or practice.

Fritz is preceded in death by his parents and his sister Krista Klein Coon.

He would give you the shirt off his back, the food off his plate, and still ask what else he could do to help or just brighten your day. He will be greatly missed by all.

Edna Juanita “Nita” Henry, age 86 of Seguin, passed away on January, 20, 2023. Edna was born on November 12, 1936 in Freer, Texas to Joseph William Butler and Mabel Ethel (Teague).

Edna is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Roland J. Henry Sr. (RJ); brothers J.C. Butler, Jimmy Roy Butler and sister Margie Butler.

where she was a waitress. They were married on August 20, 1955. Nita and RJ enjoyed dancing to country music their favorite songs being Waltz Across Texas and Silver Wings. Over the years Nita was known for many talents. She was a hairdresser in New Braunfels, a Pink Lady at New Braunfels Hospital and a den mother for the Boy Scouts. She enjoyed raising animals and was known for raising exotic birds for over 40 years. Her and RJ raised their two boys and cattle on Henry Hills Ranch in Kingsbury, Texas.

Beverly Yvonne Vradenburg

French, age 95 of Seguin passed away on January 15, 2023. Beverly was the 5th child born to Clifford & Gertrude (Hutchinson) Vradenburg in Webb City, MO on December 31, 1927. She had 3 older brothers and 1 sister who have all preceded her in death. The family moved to Texas in 1937. She graduated from Edison High School and joined the Cadet Nurse Corps in 1944, and began her nurses training at Medical & Surgical Memorial Hospital in San Antonio, Texas. She graduated in 1947 as a Registered Nurse at the age of 19.

Beverly married Harold (Hud) French August 30, 1947 at Redeemer Lutheran Church, San Antonio, Texas. They lived briefly in California and Oregon but returned to Texas to make their home. They enjoyed 55 years of marriage until Hud’s death in 2002. They were active members of Concordia Lutheran Church for many years. They were blessed with 2 daughters, Randi Fowler (who preceded her in death) and Cindie Kidwell; 4 grandchildrenMichael, Barbara, Lisa (Ron) and Stephen (Autumn); 9 great-grandchildrenJeremy, Stephanie, Allen-Michael, Dylan, Ryan, Kaylee, Savannah, Sawyer and Tate; and 3 great-great-grandchildren- Leland, Brock and Beverly; former son-in-law and friend, Michael Stehling; numerous nieces, nephews, other loving family members and many friends; and her 2 sons-in-law, John Fowler and Kenneth Kidwell (both of whom preceded her in death).

Beverly worked at BAMC in the operating room where she was the Head Nurse of the Cardio-Thoracic Service for many years. She retired from BAMC (the same day Hud retired from the Academy of Health Services) January 1, 1988 after 22 years.

Beverly was an outgoing, loving, Christian person who enjoyed life. She loved traveling, which she did often. Her family was important to her and she spent many happy times with them. She was strong in her faith and knew she was a child of the Lord. Beverly and her daughters moved to Seguin after Hud’s death and she became active at First Baptist Church of Seguin.

Her family asks you to remember these words:

It takes a long time to get used to the loss of a loved one but it is important to remember that when people die, they leave behind something very special- they leave us memories of many things they said and did. And as long as we have memories, the people we love will live on in our hearts and minds.

Biden Marks 50 Years Since Roe V. Wade (Washington, DC) -- President Biden is marking the 50th anniversary of the Supreme Court’s Roe v. Wade decision. In a proclamation, Biden laid out his administration’s commitment to defend reproductive rights following the high court’s decision last year to overturn Roe, essentially undoing the constitutional right to abortion. The President said the decision has put the health and lives of women across the nation at risk. The Supreme Court issued the landmark decision on January 22nd, 1973.

Missouri Faith Leaders File Lawsuit Challenging State Abortion Ban

(St. Louis, MO) -- A group of faith leaders in Missouri is challenging the state’s abortion ban. Thirteen members of clergy, the Americans United for Separation of Church and State, and National Women’s Law Center announced at Christ Church Cathedral in St. Louis that they’ve filed a lawsuit. The suit argues that state legislators approved the ban based on their personal religious beliefs, which violates the separation of church and state. Missouri bans abortions except in cases of medical emergencies.

Economist Warns Of Future Global Risk At Davos Forum

(Davos) -- A top U.S. economist warns the world is “utterly unprepared” for the next COVID-19 type of crisis. Former Treasury Secretary Larry Summers puts better than 50-50 odds of an event on that scale happening in the next 15 years. The Harvard professor made the comment while discussing the biggest short term risks during a panel discussion as the World Economic Forum wraps up in Davos, Switzerland. Summers listed his top concerns as a resurgence in inflation, high debt in many regions and the geopolitical risks in Asia and the Middle East.

Park Rangers Believe They Found World’s Largest Toad

(Undated)) -- Park rangers in Australia believe they found the world’s largest toad. The potentially record-breaking toad was discovered in a rainforest near Queensland. The State Department of Environment and Science said rangers named the amphibian “Toadzilla” and removed it from the wild. They said it weighed nearly six pounds, which is slightly heavier than the record set by a toad in 1991, according to Guinness World Records. However, the massive toad was reportedly euthanized because it poses a threat to other animals.

Field of Honor 2023 BBQ Plate Sale

City of Seguin Hosting Blood Drive

The City of Seguin is partnering with the South Texas Blood & Tissue Center to host a Blood Drive from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 31 at the Seguin Coliseum parking lot, located at 950 S.
