Community mourning the loss of agriculture leader

(Seguin) -- For decades, the name Luensmann has been synonymous with anything farm and ranch. That’s all thanks to many years and now the legacy Benno Luensmann of the Seguin Cattle Company has left behind. Luensmann died Sunday.

Over the years, family members say Benno has received many awards for his accomplishments as well as recognition for a lifetime of service to

the community and agriculture. His son, Bryan Luensmann says agriculture was simply his father’s passion.

“Dad was born in Zuehl, Texas. He married mom in 1957 and he took a job here in Seguin. He taught at Seguin High School. He taught at TLU when it still had an Ag department. He has done a little bit of everything in this community. He served back in

the day as the fair president. In ’78, they bought the Cattle Company him and his two brothers and they turned it from a rundown beat up sell barn to a multi-million sell barn. So, he has had a lot of achievements in this life. Gosh, there is nothing in agriculture where he didn’t sit on a committee, or he wasn’t involved with the kids. It was his lifelong passion,” said Bryan.

Façade grants continue progress in Downtown

(Seguin) -- Recently, the Seguin Main Street Advisory Board reviewed eleven applications for FIX-IT Façade grants in downtown Seguin and recommended nine projects for funding.

The façade grants continue to be the most effective tool in downtown Seguin’s revitalization. These small grants make a big difference in a building owner or downtown business’ ability to invest in Seguin. The grant can go to any exterior improvements in the downtown district, including ADA compliance, painting, roof repairs, awning construction.

Of the eleven applications reviewed, due to limited funding, the Board recommended funding nine projects. The projects include:

• 106 West Court Street - To repair cracks in the façade, replace missing downspout, and reconstruct bulkheads under storefront windows.

• 420 North Austin Street - Convert a window to a door to meet fire code.

• 200 East Court Street - Construct awnings, install windows – transom and storefront.

• 110 South Austin Street - Construct a new awning.

• 109 – 113 North Austin - Repair the second story wood windows.

• 314 North River Street - To replace tin roof with asphalt roof.

• 104 South Austin Street - Installation of a roof membrane system.

• 206 South Austin Street - Construct a new awning with recessed lighting.

• 409 North Austin Street - Repair balconies and replace windows.

These projects represent an investment of over $300,000 in downtown Seguin. Representing a ratio of 6:1 meaning for every dollar of public money invested in the grant, another five are being invested by the private sector.

“Seguin Main Street has been awarding façade grants since 1998 and have been a driving force in rehabbing downtown properties,” said Kyle Kramm, Main Street & CVB Director, “We are pleased to announce these grant awards and cannot wait to see the impact the projects have in all of downtown.”

Family says Benno had both practical experience in agriculture and degrees in Animal Husbandry and Education. Bryan says his father was no stranger to anyone in the agricultural community. He says although identified with Guadalupe County and the Seguin Cattle Company, relationships in the industry even before cattle were built all over.

“Before we started running cattle, he was a registered Duroc breeder back in the 60s and 70s and early 80s and all of the way from the Midwest down into Mexico. I mean, I remember as a kid where we would haul breeding gilts all the way into Mexico. We would leave at midnight so we could be there at daybreak while it was cool, and I mean that’s why I say it’s not just one county. It was all over the United States and the Mexico border. In ’82 is when he had his tractor accident, that’s when the girls were off to college and me and my brother were in high school, and they already had the cattle company. We had all these hogs and we just had to sell the hogs off because we were spread too thin. It was just mom and us two boys there at the house

starting on Wednesday, February 1, 2023. Online ticket sales for the general admission will also go on sale on Wednesday, February 1, 2023. Reserved seats ($15) are selling fast and are only available at the Teatro De Artes' Cultural Arts Center located at 921 W. New Braunfels St. Seguin, TX 78155. and that’s when we got into the cow and calf operation and that’s where we stuck with it,” said Brian.

In 1974, the family shares that the U.S. Feed Grain Council asked Benno to travel to South Korea and work as a service consultant for the U.S. Department of Agriculture. They say there he spent two years in South Korea, Japan and Taiwan. They add that he was also asked to continue working for the Agriculture Department but chose to return home to his family and farm.

The Seguin Cattle Company was purchased in 1978. Sharing in the business were Benno’s brothers Hank and Otto. Later joining the team was brother Richard.

Among his accomplishments and recognition for a lifetime of service to the community and agriculture are awards from the Swine Breeders Association, Independent Cattlemen’s Association, Texas State University, Texas Lutheran College, and the Seguin Area Chamber of Commerce.

Benno leaves behind his wife Shirley Luensmann, and other children Reagan Luensmann, Yvonne Evilsizer and Donna Skogman. Benno was 88.

SHREVEPORT, LA -- The Texas Lutheran women’s basketball team led wire-to-wire - leading by as many as 25 points - in a 75-50 win over Centenary at the Gold Dome to earn a weekend split and win their third game in four opportunities.

Benno Luensmann, 88, passed away peacefully at home on January 29, 2023.

Benno was born August 7, 1934 to Otto Sr. and Alma (Bielke) Luensmann in Zuehl, Texas. He was the eighth of ten children born on a 75-acre family farm that supported the entire family. Life was difficult and money was scarce during his childhood but those conditions helped mold his life-long philosophy of hard work and determination as well as the value of family, church and community.

He married Shirley Ann Drzymalla on January 26, 1957. He and Shirley started life together with their love for each other, a Master’s degree in Education and a strong determination to succeed. With a lifetime of practical experience in agriculture and degrees in Animal Husbandry and Education, he taught Agriculture at Texas Lutheran College. He also taught at East Central High School and Seguin High School.

Benno was an entrepreneur at heart. In 1960, he won Grand Champion Barrow at the San Antonio Livestock Show and Rodeo. Lone Star Brewery paid the world’s record price at that time for the barrow - $3,500. With the prize money Benno and Shirley purchased part of the farm they have lived on for 62 years. On that farm, they raised their four children, Yvonne, Donna, Reagan and Bryan. Everyone worked together to raise crops and run a very successful purebred swine breeding operation. After a near fatal tractor accident they converted to a cow and calf operation.

In 1974, Benno was asked by the U.S. Feed Grain Council to travel to South Korea and work as a Service Consultant for the U.S. Department of Agriculture. He spent 2 years in South Korea, Japan and Taiwan. He was asked to continue working for the Agriculture Department but he chose to return home to his beloved farm and community.

In 1978, Benno and brothers Hank and Otto purchased the Seguin Cattle Company. All the brothers, including Richard, worked for years at the Union Stockyards for A.C. Oefinger in San Antonio Texas. When the Union Stockyards closed in 2001, Richard joined his brothers at the Cattle Company.

Over the years, Benno received many awards for his accomplishments as well as recognition for a life time of service to the community and

agriculture. He was recognized by the Swine Breeders Association, Independent Cattlemen’s Association, Texas State University, Texas Lutheran College and the Seguin Chamber of Commerce, to name a few.

Benno and Shirley loved meeting and socializing with each of you. The Covid outbreak ended their busy social schedule but you were always in their hearts.

Benno is preceded in death by his parents, sisters Viola (Pat) Loeffler, Elfrieda (Adolph) Beyer, Evelyn (Chuck) Klein, Marie (Howard) Stacey, Helen (Sinton) Lampman and brothers Henry “Hank” Luensmann and Richard Luensmann as well as brother-in-law Theodore Drzymalla Jr.

He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Shirley (Drzymalla) Luensmann, his sons, Reagan (Mary) Luensmann and Bryan (Lauren) Luensmann, daughters, Yvonne (Steve) Evilsizer and Donna (Tom) Skogman. Grandchildren Andrew Evilsizer, Cheyenne Luensmann, Hunter Luensmann, Garrett Luensmann, Savannah Luensmann, Lane Luensmann, Cole Luensmann and Kelsey Luensmann. Brother, Otto (Loraine) Luensmann, sister, Lillian (Willie) Strey and sisters-in-law, Helen Luensmann, Laverne Luensmann and Betty Drzymalla, brother-in-law, Carl Ray (Linda) Drzymalla as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends.

Serving as pall bearers will be Mike Friesenhahn, Darren Luensmann, Mark Cerda, Lane Luensmann, Cole Luensmann, Andrew Evilsizer, Hunter Luensmann, Garrett Luensmann and Bubba Jahns.

The family would like to give special thanks to Julia and Noemi as well as Nancy and Vanessa who took wonderful care of “Mr. B”. Your kindness will never be forgotten. Also, many thanks to GRMC Hospice and nurse Sara Sutton Vogel who helped our family through this journey.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, February 2, 2023 at Tres Hewell Mortuary from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted on Friday, February 3, 2023 at 10:00 a.m. at Cross Church with Rev. Jim Price officiating. Interment will be at Eden Cemetery in Seguin. Following services, a reception will be held at the Seguin Cattle Company, 2424 Hwy 46, Seguin 78155.

Study Examines Link Between Heart Attack Rates And COVID

(Los Angeles, CA) -- Heart attacks are on the rise among younger adults and a recent study suggests there’s a link to COVID-19. Heart attacks have been on the rise over all ages since the start of the pandemic. However, the youngest age group monitored - those between 25 and 44 - saw the highest increase at nearly 30-percent. Researchers at the Smidt Heart Institute at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center point to several possible explanations, including pre-existing conditions. But they also highlighted external factors such as job loss, financial pressures and social anxiety that many have experienced as a result of COVID.

Study: Kids’ Mental Health Is Parents’ Biggest Concern

(Washington, DC) -- The biggest concern for parents is their kids’ mental health. That’s according to a new study from the Pew Research Center, which tallied more than 37-hundred U.S. parents last year. Forty-percent of respondents said they are extremely or very worried that their kids will struggle with anxiety or depression. Thirty-five-percent felt the same about their kids being bullied. Concerns over drugs or alcohol and getting shot were further down the list at less than 25-percent.

Surgeon

General: 13 Too Young To Join Social Media

(Washington, DC) -- The U.S. Surgeon General says 13 is too young for children to join social media. Speaking with CNN, Vivek Murthy explained the “skewed” and “distorted” environment of social media does a “disservice” to children who are still “developing their identity.” His comments come despite many social media platforms allowing teens that young to sign up for an account. Murthy suggested parents “band together” to keep their kids off social media until a more appropriate age. New research out of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill also suggests that frequently checking social media can actually change the brain chemistry of adolescents.

Former Steelers Linebacker Launching His Own Line Of Medical Marijuana

(Pittsburgh, PA) -- A former Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker is going to market with his line of medical marijuana. Ryan Shazier has joined the company Organic Remedies to launch the new Steel City Greats collection of pain, depression, and anxiety relief marijuana products. Shazier suffered a devastating spinal cord injury in 2017, ending his NFL career, and leading to a long and painful process of recovery. He says that’s when he started looking into medical marijuana as a natural alternative to opioid pain medications. A portion of proceeds from sales will go toward Shazier’s foundation, supporting people who are recovering from spinal cord injuries.

We are honored that Modern Healthcare Magazine has named us one of the best places to work in the nation — again. Our collective dedication to providing world class healthcare means we are all passionate about taking care of you and your family for many years to come.
