Showcase Seguin to host FREE event this year

Limited tickets still required for annual trade show

(Seguin) – The Seguin Area Chamber of Commerce is inviting you to step out of this world for a night of business and fun.

The chamber will be hosting its annual Showcase Seguin event on Thursday, Feb. 9 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Seguin Coliseum.

Chamber President Chester Jenke says the community is invited to come out and learn more about products, services and opportunities that exist among its members.

This year, however, the event for the very first time will be free. Jenke says although free, folks will still need to obtain a ticket for entry into the showcase.

“The theme is A Space

Odyssey, so you’ll find some of your favorite aliens, your Martians and etc. there. This is a free event this year to the public but you have to have a ticket to enter. Registration is open now and the QR code can be found on the chamber’s website, and we prefer that those that want to attend to register before February 6 but there are some limited number of tickets that are available after the sixth from the chamber office. They would just have to call and they can talk to the chamber staff. Our number here is 830-379-6382 for assistance after Feb. 6 or for those limited number of tickets,” said Jenke.

Steak, fish dinners served every First Friday at Big Red Barn

Local service group reminds locals of the dining option

(Seguin) – As you go through your dining options tonight, you don’t want to forget to add First Friday Feast to that list. Over the years, the first Friday of every month has been earmarked as the best day to snag the best steak dinner in town. That’s all thanks to the Geronimo Lions Club which for years has been serving the steak dinner at the Texas Agricultural and Education Center better known in the community as the Big Red Barn.

Club member Jim Lievens says there’s never been a better plan to raise money all year long.

“Mary Reiley, Mary was one of the founders and it may have been her original idea to come up with the First Friday Feast and I just think it’s ingenious. We are a very small club. You know service clubs in general have dwindling membership. We are a very small club so the only way we can run a big fundraiser like this is if we partner with others. So, the ingenious aspect of it is that we invite a co-beneficiary basically every single month. So, for instance, this month it is Our Lady of Guadalupe Food Pantry and they come out and they provide the manpower to serve the meal and they also bring desserts which is part of the meal,” said Lievens.

Lievens says those who invest in the fundraiser all come out on top. He says either they walk away with some much needed funds or they walk away with a delicious meal.

“So, it’s a win, win all around. It’s a service club. We provide a social activity for the community, another dining option. We also raise some money for ourselves so we can contribute and give back to the community and we benefit greatly, I

believe, with these co-beneficiaries. So, it was just ingenious how it was put together,” said Lievens.

Of course, just as important is the food. Lievens says folks will not be disappointed and appreciates all those who have become regulars.

“The food is top notch. We buy and cut our own steak. It’s fresh. We have steak. We have baked potato. We have salad – always a dessert and Texas Toast. Can’t miss that. That’s a favorite of mine as well and the option for those who don’t care for red meat is we have really good baked fish. I think it’s Atlantic Cod.

So, it’s a real good dinner option for folks,” said Lievens.

Although the club was forced to raise the price of the meal, Lievens says the dinner still remains one of the best deals in town. Plus, the event offers live entertainment.

“Sadly, as we’ve all seen with the price of eggs these days, the way the price of food keeps going up, we’ve had to raise it recently and it’s now $20 but I would still say, you go find me a steak dinner somewhere at any local restaurant for 20 bucks and that’s going to be hard to find.

Dinner, continued.

Your dinner also comes by the way – your choice of an adult beverage, a beer or wine and we also have tea and water,” said Lievens.

The Geronimo Lions will have

its First Friday Feast Fish or Steak Dinner today from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Big Red Barn. Meals are $20. A child’s hot dog plate is also available for $5. Tickets can be purchased at the door. Tonight’s entertainment will be provided by Chuck Reininger.

Showcase, continued.

Jenke says he hopes that doing away with the cost will allow even more folks to come out and see all the great things that Seguin businesses have to offer.

“Before, the event was a pay to play kind of event or pay to attend kind of event and so to increase our amount of foot traffic for our chamber members, the committee said let’s just make this a free event. It still has some of the same booths and etc. that are inside so this is the first year that it is free,” said Jenke.

Jenke says the most important part is that Showcase Seguin is full of fun.

“Kind of the way that it works is you walk through the door and you kind of get surprised by the number of folks that are there. It is set up as a trade show. So, most of the businesses that will be there will have what their goods and services are, what kind of opportunities do they have for their customers and then, at the end of the night, there’s a silent auction and we will announce those winners. We will also have some booth competitions, booth decorations so if you’ve never been before and you haven’t’ seen the extravagant booths that these folks put on, they are pretty good so you don’t want to miss that part of it. Skip around and see whose got

the best booth this year,” said Jenke.

Jenke says a few booth spots are also still available for those members looking to get into the action and night of fun.

“We also do have a few booths that are still available. We have a couple of food vendor booths as well as a couple of premier or regular booths that are avaible to chamber members and they can call Katie here at the chamber for that information,” said Jenke.

Benno Luensmann, 88, passed away peacefully at home on January 29, 2023.

Benno was born August 7, 1934 to Otto Sr. and Alma (Bielke) Luensmann in Zuehl, Texas. He was the eighth of ten children born on a 75-acre family farm that supported the entire family. Life was difficult and money was scarce during his childhood but those conditions helped mold his life-long philosophy of hard work and determination as well as the value of family, church and community.

He married Shirley Ann Drzymalla on January 26, 1957. He and Shirley started life together with their love for each other, a Master’s degree in Education and a strong determination to succeed. With a lifetime of practical experience in agriculture and degrees in Animal Husbandry and Education, he taught Agriculture at Texas Lutheran College. He also taught at East Central High School and Seguin High School.

Benno was an entrepreneur at heart. In 1960, he won Grand Champion Barrow at the San Antonio Livestock Show and Rodeo. Lone Star Brewery paid the world’s record price at that time for the barrow - $3,500. With the prize money Benno and Shirley purchased part of the farm they have lived on for 62 years. On that farm, they raised their four children, Yvonne, Donna, Reagan and Bryan. Everyone worked together to raise crops and run a very successful purebred swine breeding operation. After a near fatal tractor accident they converted to a cow and calf operation.

In 1974, Benno was asked by the U.S. Feed Grain Council to travel to South Korea and work as a Service Consultant for the U.S. Department of Agriculture. He spent 2 years in South Korea, Japan and Taiwan. He was asked to continue working for the Agriculture Department but he chose to return home to his beloved farm and community.

In 1978, Benno and brothers Hank and Otto purchased the Seguin Cattle Company. All the brothers, including Richard, worked for years at the Union Stockyards for A.C. Oefinger in San Antonio Texas. When the Union Stockyards closed in 2001, Richard joined his brothers at the Cattle Company.

Over the years, Benno received many awards for his accomplishments as well as recognition for a life time of service to the community and

agriculture. He was recognized by the Swine Breeders Association, Independent Cattlemen’s Association, Texas State University, Texas Lutheran College and the Seguin Chamber of Commerce, to name a few.

Benno and Shirley loved meeting and socializing with each of you. The Covid outbreak ended their busy social schedule but you were always in their hearts.

Benno is preceded in death by his parents, sisters Viola (Pat) Loeffler, Elfrieda (Adolph) Beyer, Evelyn (Chuck) Klein, Marie (Howard) Stacey, Helen (Sinton) Lampman and brothers Henry “Hank” Luensmann and Richard Luensmann as well as brother-in-law Theodore Drzymalla Jr.

He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Shirley (Drzymalla) Luensmann, his sons, Reagan (Mary) Luensmann and Bryan (Lauren) Luensmann, daughters, Yvonne (Steve) Evilsizer and Donna (Tom) Skogman. Grandchildren, Andrew Evilsizer (Kelle Muse), Cheyenne Luensmann, Hunter Luensmann, Garrett Luensmann, Savannah Luensmann, Lane Luensmann, Cole Luensmann and Kelsey Luensmann. Brother, Otto (Loraine) Luensmann, sister, Lillian (Willie) Strey and sistersin-law, Helen Luensmann, Laverne Luensmann and Betty Drzymalla, brother-in-law, Carl Ray (Linda) Drzymalla as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends.Serving as pall bearers will be Mike Friesenhahn, Darren Luensmann, Mark Cerda, Lane Luensmann, Cole Luensmann, Andrew Evilsizer, Hunter Luensmann, Garrett Luensmann and Bubba Jahns.

The family would like to give special thanks to Julia and Noemi as well as Nancy and Vanessa who took wonderful care of “Mr. B”. Your kindness will never be forgotten. Also, many thanks to GRMC Hospice and nurse Sara Sutton Vogel who helped our family through this journey.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, February 2, 2023 at Tres Hewell Mortuary from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted on Friday, February 3, 2023 at 10:00 a.m. at Cross Church with Rev. Jim Price officiating. Interment will be at Eden Cemetery in Seguin. Following services, a reception will be held at the Seguin Cattle Company, 2424 Hwy 46, Seguin 78155.

Monkeypox Almost Eradicated In U.S.

(Atlanta, GA) -- The public health emergency declaration for monkeypox is over. The CDC reports the number of new daily cases is dropping drastically, hovering in the single digits compared to the 450 new cases a day in August. Cases are also down in Europe, Asia, and the Western Pacific, but are continuing to rise in several South American countries. The United States led the world in number of cases over the last year. More than 30-thousand Americans were diagnosed with monkeypox during the outbreak, 23 of whom died.

IN Supreme Court Won’t Hear Second Challenge To Abortion Ban

(Indianapolis, IN) -- The Indiana Supreme Court won’t hear a second challenge to the state’s abortion ban. In this case, the ACLU is representing people of several faiths who say the new law banning nearly all abortions in Indiana infringes on their religious freedoms. After a lower court judge ruling, the case will now have to go to the Court of Appeals before reaching the state’s highest court. The Indiana Supreme Court has already heard arguments in a separate case against the abortion ban.

CDC Links Eye Drops To Infection

(Atlanta, GA) -- The CDC says there may be a link between a bacterial infection and an over-the-counter eye drop. The agency reports “a majority” of those affected had used Ezri Care Artificial Tears. While the CDC has not conclusively determined that the infections are not connected to the preservative-free eye drops, it does recommend patients not use the eye drops until all lab tests are complete. According to the CDC, one person is dead and three others have suffered permanent loss of vision from the bacterial infection.

Banana Boat Expands Sunscreen Recall

(Tampa Bay, FL) -- Banana Boat is expanding a recall of sunscreen products due to a cancer-causing chemical. The recall involves an additional batch of SPF 30 hair and scalp spray after unexpected levels of benzene were found. The FDA says benzene is a human carcinogen that can potentially result in cancer, as well as life-threatening blood disorders.
