Guadalupe County celebrates
Food Connection Day Farm Bureau to serve $1 burgers today Cindy Aguirre-Herrera
(Seguin) -- Local farmers and ranchers remind us how we are all connected with food. Today marks the return of $1 burgers to celebrate Food Connection Day in Texas. For years, the Guadalupe County Farm Bureau's local office has recognized farmers' hard work by grilling and selling the burgers outside its building located at 325 State Hwy. 46. The $1 burgers illustrate how food is still affordable thanks to the agriculture community and provides an opportunity for people to gather and have conversations about farm practices. Recently sparking that conversation with Guadalupe County Commissioners Court members was Ray Joy Pfannstiel, president of the local Texas Farm Bureau. In observance of today's Food Connection Day, Pfannstiel shared the amount of land that is invested in providing families with fresh, nutritious and affordable food. "Texas leads the nation in the number of farms with about 247,000 farms covering the 126 million acres here in Texas. About 97 percent of those farms or family farms -- with the average size being in Texas about 510 acres. Here in Guadalupe County for 2023, there were roughly 159,320 acres dedicated to crop land and grass and pastures. Of that amount, around 22,500 was planted in corn, 1,300 planted in cotton, 11,800 planted in milo and 3,600 in wheat and the remaining acres went to grass and pastures," said Pfannstiel. Pfannstiel says despite its changes, the agriculture industry is vital to sustaining the life that we have all come to appreciate. "Here in Texas, one in seven Texans have a job related to agriculture. My family farm has been growing crops and livestock since 1845. We are a Texas Heritage Farm. We
care for the environment, the soil and the water. Today's farming techniques mean I need to use new technology, science, equipment, fewer chemicals and less fuel on the farm. Today, one farmer feeds 155 people versus 50 years ago, we just fed 26 people here in the United States," said Pfannstiel. Also showing his support to farmers and ranchers in Guadalupe County was Commissioner Pct. 1 Greg Seidenberger. Seidenberger not only thanked Pfannstiel for his own contributions to this community but shared his appreciation to all of those who make sure that the food hits the table. "It's so important for us to have this food recognition day because a lot of people don't realize where the food comes from. I remember a few years ago, I was watching a late night talk show and he was interviewing some college students and asking them whether or not they favored a farm subsidy and this one girl said 'no, I don't care about the farmers. I get all of my food from the grocery store," said Seidenberger. "And unfortunately, that is truer than we think." In support of Food Connection Day, commissioners approved a resolution declaring today as Food Connection Day in Guadalupe County. Also on hand representing the Farm Bureau were Larry McKee and Keith Huebinger. The $1 burgers will be served from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. or until supplies last. There is a limit of one burger per person. Members of the Guadalupe County Commissioners Court are also expected to join volunteers today to serve the meals to the community.

Commissioner Pct. 1 race to hit the airwaves on KWED Saturday Topic Radio Program to feature GOP candidates Cindy Aguirre-Herrera
(Seguin) -- The five candidates appearing on the GOP ballot for Guadalupe County Commissioner Pct. 1 are scheduled to share their platform during this weekend’s KWED Saturday Topic Program. Darren Dunn, KWED and Seguin Daily News general manager will individually sit down with each of the candidates during the Saturday morning talk show. The candidates look to replace longtime Commissioner Greg Seidenberger who will be retiring from the court. The candidates scheduled for the program include Dustin Engelke, Jacqueline Phillips Ott, James Randsell, Clint Taft, and Bryan Underwood. The winner of the March 5 GOP Primary will go on to face Democratic candidate Nahomie Alanis during the November general election. Appearing on the Libertarian

Chamber officials say “the letters will be larger-than-life-sized, and will provide a picturesque space for community members and tourists” to capture “the splendor of Seguin.” Maria Castilleja, who serves as the chamber’s membership coordinator, is working closely with the leadership class. Castilleja says the leadership class consists of community members who all represent various industries and businesses throughout Seguin and Guadalupe County. She says each year, the class is tasked with coming up with a community service project that enhances the way folks live, work, and play in Seguin. “So, we are tasked with coming up with a community service project and there’s 14 of us in the group. About four or five projects were presented, and then we kind of presented information, (did) some legwork amongst the group, and then we took a vote, and the vote won for these beautiful interactive letters,” said Castilleja. believes the added attraction will promote a sense of adventure for all who visit and reside here. “The letters are these large five foot -- and you can make them as big as you want -- so five foot so our average height and kids, adults. We are making them ADA accessible. They can go up to these letters and take a picture with it. It is very similar to something that is of a mural on a wall. Moss and Willow recently did that mural of Seguin and that was beautiful. The community loved it. This is more interactive in a sense that you can actually touch it. It’s not on the wall and you can be in with it,” said Castilleja. Castilleja says the interactive Seguin letters will be more than just
a structure with possible lighting. She says the letters will depict local artistic talents and culture that exist here in the city. “Joanna Rodriguez who sits on the commission of the arts with the city of Seguin has partnered with us and has volunteered her time to work with us on the design so she has presented something to the commission. As of last week, it was approved. So, the renderings do consist of the font and the actual color and she pulled a lot of the ideas from the city of Seguin, a lot of the colors that are already downtown. As a matter of fact, we are calling the color Seguin Brick because a lot of that color was inspired from the Seguin bricks that are in our community now and before, it was just a prototype of what our vision was and we have come now to the final font and color to be placed with great contrast up against the green in that park,” said Castilleja. The hope is to have the project completed before the leadership class graduates on May 28. Those wishing to donate toward the cost of the letters are asked to contact the chamber office.

Police: 1 Dead, 22 Hurt After Shooting At Kansas City Chiefs Parade (Kansas City, MO) -- One person is dead and 22 people are injured after a shooting at the Chiefs Super Bowl parade Wednesday. Kansas City Police Chief Stacey Graves says three suspects have been detained. Graves said they are reviewing video of several parade-goers who tackled a suspect to determine if one of the detainees was not a good samaritan. The mayor of Kansas City said the White House called to offer any help. Chiefs Release Statement (Kansas City, MO) -- The Chiefs have released a statement regarding the shooting at their championship parade. The organization said it’s truly saddened by the senseless act of violence that occurred outside of Union Station. Their hearts go out to the victims, their families, and all of Kansas City. The team also said it’s in close communication with the Mayor’s office and the Kansas City Police Department. The Chiefs did confirm that all players, coaches, staff
and their families are safe and accounted for. The statement ends with a thanks to local law enforcement officers and first responders who were on-scene to assist. Biden Releases Statement After Shooting At Kansas City Chiefs Parade (Kansas City, MO) -- President Biden is releasing a statement following the shooting at the Chiefs parade Wednesday. Biden said that the Super Bowl is the most unifying event in America, and that the joy being turned to tragedy “cuts deep in the American soul.” He added that the events should “move us, shock us, and shame us into acting.” One person is dead and 22 people are injured after the shooting. Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City said it was treating 12 victims, most of them children. 49ers Fire DC Steve Wilks After One Season (Santa Clara, CA) -- The 49ers are on the search for a new defensive coordinator just days after their loss in Super Bowl 58. San Francisco fired DC Steve Wilks on Wednesday after one
season with the team. The 49ers ranked third with 17.5 points per game allowed this season. Head coach Kyle Shanahan said that he will consider both internal and external candidates for the position. Wilks came to the 49ers after a stint as the interim coach of the Carolina Panthers in 2022. Clippers Rally Past Warriors (San Francisco, CA) -- The Clippers outscored the Warriors by 16 in the fourth quarter to rally for a 130-125 win in San Francisco. James Harden netted 26 points and Paul George had 24 for LA, which has won six of its last eight. The Clippers head into the AllStar break third in the Western Conference at 36-and-17, currently just one-and-a-half games behind first-place Minnesota. Steph Curry poured in a game-high 41 points including nine three-pointers. He is the first player in NBA history to hit seven three’s in four straight games. The Warriors saw their five-game winning streak come to an end. Golden State sits 10th in the West at 26-and-26.

Sarah DeLaCruz Medrano, our beloved Mother, passed away at the age of 89. Born on December 7, 1934, in Seguin, Texas, Sarah was a remarkable woman whose life touched the hearts of everyone she encountered. Sarah married the love of her life on September 25, 1957, and relocated with her husband and children to Houston in 1967 to build a beautiful family home before returning to Seguin after the loss of her husband in 2001. Sarah’s passion for life was evident in her many hobbies and interests. She found great joy in spending time with her family, cooking delicious meals, creating beautiful crafts, and exploring new destinations through her travels. A skilled gardener with a green thumb, Sarah nurtured vibrant blooms that brought beauty to her surroundings. Her favorite pastime was playing with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, cherishing every moment, and creating precious memories. Sarah’s mischievous side would come out as she snuck a candy or two past them, bringing laughter and delight to their faces. She was also a proud member of the Guadalupanas of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in her earlier years. She was a devout Catholic of strong faith and instilled those values in her family’s life. But it was Sarah’s love for singing that truly captured the hearts of those who knew her. From a young age, she possessed a beautiful voice that resounded with passion and soul. Singing brought her immense joy, and she shared her talent with others until illness struck. Although her voice is now silent, its absence is felt by all who were fortunate enough to have heard it. She was preceded in death by her parents Gumecindo and Matiana Lopez DeLaCruz; her beloved husband of 44 years, Jose Americo Medrano; her cherished son Edmundo Medrano; and siblings Edward (Lefty) DeLaCruz, Reyes
DeLaCruz, Ramona D. Salazar (Torivio), and Mary D. Gonzales (Ruben). Their memory will forever be held close in the hearts of those who loved Sarah deeply. Sarah leaves behind a legacy of love and resilience that will continue to inspire us all. She is survived by her sister Belia D. Guerrero, brothers Toribio (Gloria) and Leonides “Leo” (Emma) DeLaCruz, daughters Esmeralda M. Olga Ramos, age 79, of Seguin, Texas passed away on February 13, 2024. She was born on January 13, 1945, in Seguin to Jesusa (Garcia) and Senovio Guerrero. Olga and Lupe were married for 60 years on September 22, 2023. She loved to do crafts and take care of her puppy, Bear. She loved taking care of others, especially her children, grandkids, and great-grandkids. Her tamales were her specialty. She was one in a million! She is preceded in death by her parents, her brothers, Juan “Johnny” Garcia and Larry Garcia, and her sister Marilu Flores. CDC To Change COVID-19 Guidelines (Undated) -- The CDC is reportedly going to further loosen COVID-19 guidelines in April. That’s according to the Washington Post. Recommendations for five-day isolation are expected to be scrapped, leaving in place guidelines that are similar to the flu and RSV. People will be urged to base their time in isolation on symptom severity and the amount of time without a fever. RFK Jr. Apologizes To Family For Super PAC Super Bowl Ad (Washington, DC) -- Robert F. Kennedy Junior is apologizing to his family after a Super Bowl commercial in support of his presidential campaign. He wrote on X, that’s he’s sorry if the ad caused any pain to his family. Kennedy said the American Values Super PAC created and aired the advertisement without his campaign’s “involvement or approval.” The FEC prohibits Super PACs from doing so. Kennedy’s cousin Bobby Shriver criticized him Sunday on X, writing that their family would be “appalled by his deadly health care views.” Despite Kennedy’s apology, his ad remains pinned to the top of his X profile as of Monday afternoon. Oregonian Diagnosed With Bubonic Plague Likely Infected By Pet Cat (Deschutes County, OR) -- An Oregon person diagnosed with bubonic plague likely was infected by their pet cat. It’s the state’s first confirmed case since 2015, according to health officials. The CDC says antibiotics are the first line of treatment for the illness. Fawcett said the resident’s close contacts and their pet were provided medication. CA Reports Two Measles Cases So Far This Year As Travel Increases (Sacramento, CA) -- Doctors are on alert as California tries to avoid a measles outbreak. The state has already seen two cases in less than two months, one in San Diego the other in Los Angeles. Compare that to four for all of last year. The most recent jump was in 2019 when 72 people got sick. The spread stopped during the pandemic but is on the rise again. Health officials say more unvaccinated people are traveling and potentially bring the highly contagious disease back from other countries. Symptoms include a fever, cough, pink eye and a rash.
