WEEKEND EDITION

Seguin ISD puts the Seguin ISD agrees brakes on May bond issue to contract with new SUPERINTENDENT Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

(Seguin) -- The Seguin ISD is officially under new leadership. The Seguin ISD Board of Trustees on Thursday unanimously approved the hiring of Dr. Veronica Vijil as the district’s new superintendent of schools. Dr. Vijil, who arrived in Seguin last summer to serve as the deputy superintendent, quickly found her way to the interim position following the resignation of former Superintendent Matthew Gutierrez in September.

After being named as the lone finalist for the position, Vijil on Thursday was publicly presented with a contract following the mandated 21 day waiting period.

Dr. Vijil says she is excited about the opportunity and looks forward to continuing the work. Contract, pg. 2

(Seguin) -- The Seguin ISD's plan for a possible May bond election has been put on hold -- at least for now. Trustees unanimously voted to hold off on the district's latest attempt at ordering a $21.75 million bond issue. During the past few weeks, the district had been contemplating a bond issue to assist in the funding of several proposed projects. However, Thursday night, new Seguin ISD Superintendent Dr. Veronica Vijil laid out the framework on why the district and its facilities committee felt that more time and planning was needed to really meet the needs of the district. In addressing what was

a proposed $7.5 million for upgrades at the newly acquired Irma Lewis Seguin Outdoor Learning Center, Vijil said a suggestion was made that the center work toward being more aligned with state standards and activities. She says this is in effort to better meet the needs of kids in all grade levels. “It’s a wonderful idea and it would give Pete Silvius an opportunity with more time to create what a kindergartener’s experience will be at the Seguin Outdoor Learning Center – first grade and so on and align it to the state’s standards so that all the activities that are going on there are aligned to our state standards,” said Vijil. Seguin man stabbed in New Braunfels Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

(New Braunfels) – Investigation continues into the stabbing of a Seguin man in New Braunfels. The New Braunfels Police Department say they were called to Resolute Hospital just after 11 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 15. Investigators say hospital staff reported that someone had arrived at the emergency room with stab wounds. The victim, a 39-year-old man from Seguin, is said to have suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries. The victim, who was able to speak to officers, indicated that the stabbing had taken place in a

Contract, continued. “I am so thrilled to be working with this team of eight and with the team that I work with every single day, boots on the ground, everybody the same -- having children at the forefront of our decisions and so we say we might not agree about everything in a room but we walk out and we are a one team in agreement of what we are doing is in the best interest of kids,” said Vijil. Trustees in January opted to not go out for an official search for superintendent and

instead named Vijil as its lone finalist. Trustees said their decision was based on her proven record and previous experience leading the Fabens ISD, a B rated district. While serving as interim, trustees also believed that Vijil had already made positive changes districtwide, and that she continues to bring

crime scene as well as the suspect inside a residence in the 200 block of School Avenue. The suspect, identified as Jose Luis Rodriguez, 55, of New Braunfels, was arrested without incident and taken to the Comal County Jail where he was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. He was also booked on a parole violation warrant. The incident remains under investigation by the New Braunfels PD Criminal Investigations Division. Investigators say additional charges are pending.

new ideas to the table. Ready to support Dr. Vijil even more is School Board President Alejandro Guerra. “Dr. Vijil’s previous experience in education have resulted in strong leadership skills and has also given her the capability to deal with challenges that our district is currently facing. Dr. Vijil is a strong believer in transparency. We selected Dr. Vijil as superintendent for Seguin ISD because one of her main goals is to turn this district around. This process will not happen overnight but rather in steps. Steps that

will require some changes so we ask our district staff, students, families, and community members to support the changes that will ultimately result in producing positive student outcomes. As we move forward, we need to focus on the positive activities in our district and identify the areas for improvement along with implementing the property corrective actions. The continuous improvement process never ends,” said Guerra. Dr. Vijil was awarded a three-year contract that includes a base salary of $231,000.

Bond, continued. And while the facilities committee agreed that the proposed $3 million for land acquisition would have been a good investment for the school district, the team felt that it was even more important to revisit their demographics study and see if the growth is continuing as predicted. “The last demographic study that was conducted was two years ago and in demographic time, that’s a long time and so what we would like to look forward to is a demographic study two years later to see if the growth is still in the same location that they had predicted and the rate of growth before we make further decisions,” said Vijil. Now while the renovation of Weinert and Jefferson Elementary School were not included in the initial bond proposal, the schools' needs quickly surfaced as priorities - priorities that Vijil states were part of the 2019 facilities long range plan. “Very very importantly, we talked about the 10 year plan, a lot of time, effort and investment went into the 10 year plan and that included work to Jefferson and Weinert. At the time, these were priorities that were put in place by the committee and we know that things have changed – the acquisition of the Outdoor Learning Center being one and so, it would be a good idea to go back to the 10 year plan, see if the outline of priorities are still as they remain there or do they need an update to include where we are today. We want to be very loud and clear about the needs of Jefferson and Weinert. I’ll say it over and over again, I don’t want anyone to think that they are forgotten and that we won’t place them at a high priority. There’s a

lot of needs for our district but more time would allow us to garner community support, answer more questions, realign priorities as necessary,” said Vijil. Also, on the list of proposed bond projects was $6.5 million for school safety and security - specifically the purchase of the Front Row System - a robust solution for school wide communication which includes emergency notification and response with paging intercom abilities for all classrooms. The district was also proposing $750,000 for the purchase of six student activity buses to help the transportation of students in athletics, fine arts and CTE. Wrapping up the ballot would have been a roll out of classroom technology. This would have included $3.7 million in touch screen or digital white boards. During their vote to hold off on the bond, Vigil also noted that the timing of a bond issue in May would conflict with this month’s retirement of longtime Chief Communications Officer Sean Hoffmann. She says Hoffmann’s role plays a critical piece to the overall bond campaign providing the public with the required information and resources they deserve. District officials Thursday did not indicate how long it would be until another bond proposal was brought back to the table. These opportunities are considered by voters in November or May. Although they are not moving forward with this particular bond proposal, district officials say they remain thankful for the input and feedback received throughout this process by the facilities committee, community and staff.

DOJ Report: Bureau Of Prisons Fails To Stop Nearly 200 Suicides (Washington, DC) -- A watchdog report says the Federal Bureau of Prisons failed to stop nearly 200 deaths by suicide. The Department of Justice Inspector General report attributed it to “a combination of recurring policy violations and operational failures.” It’s based on a review of 344 inmate deaths from 2014 to 2021, 187 of which were suicides. The report said that under the conditions at the Bureau of Prisons, “inmates were able to advance their suicidal ideations and ultimately died by suicide.” It also noted that some facilities did not run “mock suicide drills” they are required to run three times a year. NYC Suing Social Media Companies (New York, NY) -- New York City is suing social media companies over their roles in fueling the mental health crisis among children. Mayor Eric Adams says the city is joining hundreds of school districts from across the country in filing litigation against TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat, and YouTube. The lawsuit is an effort to force the social media giants to change their behavior and recover the costs of addressing the public health threat. New York spends more than 100-million dollars on youth mental health services each year. Adams also announced a social media action plan to hold the companies accountable, provide education and support to young people and their families and study the long-term impacts of social media on youth. Robot Performs Surgery Demo Aboard Space Station (Lincoln, NE) -- A tiny surgical robot aboard the International Space Station has performed its first surgery demonstration in zero gravity. The robot, nicknamed space MIRA, performed multiple operations on simulated tissue last weekend while a surgeon back on Earth guided the robot’s “hands.” The two-pound robot was developed by researchers at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. The inventors hope the technology can be used during medical emergencies on longduration spaceflights and in remote areas on Earth that lack adequate health care resources. FDA Approves First Medication For Frostbite (Silver Spring, MD) -- The FDA is approving the first ever medication to treat frostbite. Aurlumyn is an injection used in adults who have suffered severe frostbite to help reduce the risk of toe or finger amputation. A trial of the treatment found that patients who received the medication alone saw a lower risk of amputation compared to patients who received other treatments. The FDA said, “Having this new option provides physicians with a tool that will help prevent the life changing amputation of one’s frostbitten fingers or toes.” The agency noted the most common side effects of the medication include headache, heart palpitations, nausea, dizziness and hypotension.than two months, one in San Diego the other in Los Angeles. Compare that to four for all of last year. The most recent jump was in 2019 when 72 people got sick. The spread stopped during the pandemic but is on the rise again. Health officials say more unvaccinated people are traveling and potentially bring the highly contagious disease back from other countries. Symptoms include a fever, cough, pink eye and a rash.
