Religious leaders in Seguin hit the streets for a pair of Ashes-To-Go

(Seguin) –Seguin churches will be taking church to the streets this Ash Wednesday. Observing its 10th annual “Ashes-To-Go” will be Emanuel’s Lutheran Church.

Pastor Marcus Bigott says Ash Wednesday marks the start of the Lenten season or countdown to Easter. He says it is a Holy day observed by various faith communities.

“Ash Wednesday is a tie back to the ancient practice. It goes all the way to the Middle Ages of someone carrying an Ashen cross on their foreheads as not only a sign of penitence but a reminder of our humanity and a little bit of our humility that we entrust ourselves to God. We are created from dust and to dust we shall return and that is in midst of a world that is often struggling with itself and how we care for each other to remember that even in brokenness, God heals, and God is there to love and is there to love us through the brokenness,” said Bigott.

The church today will be providing ashes on foreheads to anyone in the community from noon to 1 p.m. The ashes will be available in the parking spaces adjacent to the church located on Gonzales Street.

Bigott says although Emmanuel’s is hosting the event, several churches have partnered with the local congregation.

“I am really excited. This year, our Ashes to Go is not only continuing to grow in people who participate when they come in

their vehicles or walk up or ride their bicycles or skateboard, but we are also growing in our church partnerships which is wonderful. It’s not just Emmanuel’s Lutheran this year. But it’s Emmanuel’s, First Presbyterian Church, Spirit of Joy Lutheran Church and Friedens United Church of Christ and the clergy leadership of each of those congregations will be here from 12 to 1 p.m. and each of those pastors will have ashes and a small prayer to offer each person who then comes

up or every van load or however it happens as they then move from the Saegert side of Gonzales to the Travis Street side of Gonzales. There will be lanes and volunteers to help guide folks,” said Bigott.

Joining the tradition in its own prayer garden will be La Trinidad United Methodist Church. The church will also be hosting an Ash Wednesday Community Drive-Thru today from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The garden is located at the corner of N. Milam and Mountain Streets.

It is said this tradition of going out to the people first began with three Chicago area Episcopal congregations who in 2010 headed to train stations where commuters were apparently hungry for “a moment of prayer, renewal and grace.” Church leaders say they found that those who had no time to attend middle of the week church services or had forgotten about the religious tradition “were delighted to received ashes with prayer as they began their day.” Ashes, pg. 4

City calculates 2022 reinvestment in Downtown Seguin

(Seguin) -- The Seguin Main Street Program recently calculated the 2022 reinvestment within downtown Seguin. This total includes properties that were purchased and rehabilitated, public investment in infrastructure, and more. The grand total for 2022 was just shy of $7 million.

“We are pleased to announce our reinvestment total for 2022 – $7 million – which is one of the highest totals downtown Seguin has ever seen,” said Kyle Kramm, Seguin Main Street & CVB Director, “The bulk of this reinvestment came from the private sector.”

One of the items driving reinvestment in downtown Seguin was the City’s new Business Improvement Grant which assisted multiple downtown businesses. Some downtown businesses used the grant for HVAC upgrades, lighting improvements, painting, ADA access, and more.

One of the largest drivers for reinvestment in downtown was the sale of downtown property which is a positive sign for reinvestment in 2023 as the new owners of the properties will be investing into their buildings to open new businesses. For example, the

purchase of 112 East Court Street was reported in the 2022 reinvestment figures, but the construction occurring there for the new bar will be reported in the 2023 reinvestment figure.

Several new businesses opening downtown also drove reinvestment figures. For example, Pecantown Books & Brews conversion of a residential structure into the café and bookstore. Other new businesses included The Dollhouse Tearoom, The Mercantile, One and Only Tattoo and several others.

The public sector’s investment in infrastructure, including the sidewalk project, contributed over $500,000 in the reinvestment total.

Also tracked in the reinvestment total is the number of volunteer hours as the work of the Main Street program is reliant on volunteer board members and event volunteers. Almost 300 volunteer hours were accounted for in 2022, including Seguin Rotary’s assistance with the staging of the Fourth of July Parade. Overall, 2022 was a great year for downtown Seguin and we anticipate 2023 being just as good – if not better.

Seguin Police Department Seeking Applicants for Citizens Police Academy

(Seguin) – You’re invited to learn the ins and outs of the Seguin Police Department. Signup is now available for the annual Seguin Citizens Police Academy.

Sarah Wallace, the community engagement officer, says the Citizens Police Academy (CPA) is a free program that educates Seguin residents about the police department and prepares them to be ambassadors of the Seguin Police Department within the community.

“It of course is not a law enforcement academy just an informational class where citizens can attend. We cover many different

topics such as criminal investigations, narcotic investigations, use of force, mental health and policing just so many different topics and we try to do a lot of hands on practical stuff totally up to the participants how much they want to do but that way, they can also check it out and see what officers do in instances like a traffic stop, a DWI investigations, firearms all of that fun stuff,” said Wallace.

She says during the 11-week course, participants will learn about topics ranging from criminal law and patrol tactics to use of force.

The group will also take field trips to facilities such as the Guadalupe County Juvenile Probation Center and the Guadalupe County Jail. The final class includes a trip to the SPD gun range training facility, providing students an opportunity to learn gun safety and basics of firing weapons. Wallace says participants will also have a chance to ride-along with a patrol officer during the academy.

“You also get to really see the passion that officers have for their jobs and their community and that we are not out there to kind of ruin

somebody’s day. It’s just to show how much these officers really love what they do and really love giving back to the community. Depending on what the topic is, we bring the officer like that is their niche –for example, DWI’s or narcotic investigations and you really get to see how much that officer loves that topic and like they are more than happy to come in and further teach the citizens of what they do and why they love that. So, I always think that is a really cool eye opener for our community,” said Wallace. Academy, pg. 4

Today, that tradition has apparently spread all across the country with Emanuel’s Lutheran Church picking up the tradition here in Seguin just two years after that initial launch in 2010. During his five and half years here in Seguin, Bigott says he himself has witnessed many of those same moments of grace being extended during the Ashes To-Go.

“It’s been fantastic especially as we walk through the worst of COVID and those years. It provided us a chance to not only be together as a community but to remember such an important element of our Lenten walk about remembering who we are and who we entrust our lives to. So, gathering on the street provided an opportunity for folks to do what we couldn’t safely do inside our sanctuaries often times. It also gave us a chance to pray with those who we were missing and who we hadn’t been able to see in church because we couldn’t gather together but also, it provided a space too for us to gather with those who maybe walking into a church building is not the easiest of things or it’s not a place they

Wallace says leading this program is just as fun for the officers who also commit and dedicate their time to educating the citizens.

“Honestly, I don’t think many people would believe me on this but the biggest part that people are most surprised about is just getting to see our officers in a human form and that is somebody with a badge on that

want to be but they feel within themselves a connection to this time of the church year and they want to be a part of it in a way where it meets them where they are. So being able to be on the street or where we used to be there on the corner of the Habitat parking lot, it gave us a chance to do that. It does indeed take church to the streets and puts us in a place that doesn’t look anything like the structure building that we meet in on Sunday,” said Bigott.

Various other churches throughout Seguin will also be hosting their own respective Ash Wednesday observances and services. On top of its special services, Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church will be hosting its annual Ash Wednesday Fish Fry. The fish fry is being hosted by the Guadalupanas.

Both a lunch and dinner meal will be offered. The lunch fish fry will be served today from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. followed by dinner from 5 to 7 p.m. The catfish plates are $13.50 each and include fries, coleslaw and green bean salad. Both dine-in and to go plates will be available. The church is located at 409 W. Krezdorn St.

The deadline to apply for the program is 5 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 28.

SEGUIN, Texas -- Texas Lutheran softball’s Ashlyn Strother (Seabrook/Clear Falls) has been named the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Pitcher of the Week, the conference announced today.The two-time reigning SCAC Pitcher of the Year and first team All-American picked up in 2023 right where she left off a year ago. This week’s conference honor marks the tenth of Strother’s career.

As a starter in TLU’s second game of the season against DivisionII #19 St. Mary’s, Strother tallied three strikeouts and only allowed one hit en route to a complete game shutout. Strother is the only pitcher to shut out the Rattlers this season

and maintained a no hitter through 3.2 innings.

Born on May 30, 1940 to Hugh Leonard Ranft and Minna Marburger Ranft.

Died February 15, 2023

He was preceded in death by his parents and infant son and numerous close friends.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years Venave Ivy Ranft and their 5 children, Deborah Ranft, Cynthia Riebe (James), Kevin Ranft (Jamie), Brent Ranft, Stephen Ranft (Jenifer) and many beloved grandchildren and greatgrandchildren. As well as his siblings Larry Ranft, Joan Bowman (Mark), Mindy Walden, numerous in-laws, relatives and friends. While many knew him for his diligent appliance repair, many more knew he was dedicated to teaching God’s Word to any who wanted to learn. He was loved for his generous, outgoing personality and helpful disposition. He was known for using the Bible to “set things straight” while also using it to “bind up the broken-hearted.”

He will be remembered for those qualities and his hard work in serving to promote God’s will here on earth. We are confident that the words found in Nehemiah 5:19, “do remember me favorably, O my God, for all that I have done in behalf of this people” can be said with Jim in mind. We know sometime in the near future, we will once again see his broad smile, hear his booming voice singing wholeheartedly and feel his warm embrace as he begins to engage us in conversation over a shared meal.

His memorial service will be held in person at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses located at 1367 Eastwood Dr Seguin TX 78155 on February 25, 2023 at 2:00 pm. Sheryl Louise (Davis) Callaway, 74, of Seguin, Texas passed away in New Braunfels, Texas on February 18, 2023. Sheryl was born in Leesville, Louisiana on December 11, 1948 to Mildred and Melvin Davis.

Sheryl grew up on the White Sands Missile base and later graduated from Las Cruces High School in New Mexico. She then went on to perform secretarial duties for the military at Fort Sam Houston and later worked for the San Antonio Post Office from which she retired after 27 years of service. She enjoyed horseback riding and was a proud member of the Guadalupe County Sheriff’s mounted posse.

Sheryl is preceded in death by her parents, Melvin Davis and Mildred (Craig) Davis and sister, Carol Lemmen Coleman. She is survived by her husband of 23 years, Jimmie Callaway. They married on October 23, 1999. She is further survived by her brothers, Butch and Keith Davis; sister, Gayle Rosson; sons, Greg Garzonie and wife Mary Garzonie, Mark Garzonie and wife Kat Garzonie; stepchildren, Lacie Tucker and Travis Callaway; and five grandchildren, Blake, Jackson, Jacob, Samantha, and John.

Memorial Services will be held on Friday, February 24, 2023 at Goetz Funeral Home. Visitation will begin at 4:00 p.m. and the Funeral Service officiated by Pastor Paul Theiss will follow at 6:00 p.m.

George William Start, age 90 of Seguin, Texas, passed away on February 9, 2023 at Windsor Nursing Home in Seguin. George was born on December 4, 1932 in Burr Oak, Michigan to Kathryn (Wert) and Howard W. Start.

George retired from the State of Michigan Civil Rights Department in 1988. He and his wife Isabel (Izzy) moved to Seguin, Texas where his second career was in professional photography. He and Izzy worked together as C & S Photography and were prominently known for their photographing of many weddings and civic events throughout Seguin and surrounding communities until 2008.

He is preceded in death by his loving wife of 32 years, Isabel “Izzy” Cabello Start (d. 2015), his parents.

Survivors include his sons, Gary Start and Larry Start; daughter, Connie Hepler; sister, Alice Palmer; special caregivers and friends, Karen Rust and Betsy Roof; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, other loving family members and friends.

Carolyn is preceded in death by her husband, Willie Schultze and her parents.

Evelyn was a 1952 graduate of Seguin High School. She was employed at Hexcel and Wells Fargo Bank before retiring. After retirement she enjoyed baking, “Days of Our Lives”, seeing her grandchildren and great grandchildren, and getting her “hair done”.

Dominga Rosas Brown, age 82 of Seguin, went to be with her Lord on February 18, 2023. Dominga was born on September 22, 1940, in Seguin, Texas to the late Guadalupe and Hilaria Rosas.

Sharon Louise Finch, 75, formerly of Seguin, was called home to her Lord and savior on Friday February 17, 2023. She was born in Tupelo Mississippi on February 1, 1948 to Daniel J. Morris and Joan Louise (Lawson) Morris.

Visitation will begin on Thursday, February 23, 2023 at 1 p.m. at Tres Hewell Mortuary Chapel, 165 Tor Drive Seguin, TX 78155 followed by funeral service at 2 p.m. Interment will follow in San Geronimo Cemetery.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband R.F. Finch Jr., and her brother Keith Morris.

She is survived by daughter, Wendy and husband Gerrit Hoogakker of Rincon, GA; son RF Finch III and wife Jacque of Spring, TX; grandchildren Joshua Finch, Ariana and Ethan Hoogakker; brothers Scott, Randy, and James Morris; extended family members, and grand pets.

Sharon was married to RF Finch Jr. for 48 years. She served in the Navy during the Vietnam War. She also worked Civil Service for the Department of the Army for 23 years, retiring in 2004. She was a founding member

of The American Society of Cake Decorators in 1979. She was also a 40 year plus member of the Masonic Organization - Eastern Star.

Sharon had a heart that was larger than life. People often commented on how genuine her smile and character were. She was high spirited and brought joy to the lives of others through that same spirit. One of her greatest traits was the value and importance of family and friendship. She always treated others as part of the family. Those that had the privilege of knowing her well would often consider themselves family over friend. She will truly be missed; however, we take great comfort in knowing that heaven has been blessed with having such an angel to watch over us.

The family would like to express their gratitude to all those who have given support, assistance, and loving care through her medical ailments. A special thanks to her neurologist Dr. Allison Boyle who cared for her deeply. Also, a special thank you to the staff at Spring Creek Village who provided the most amazing care to her and the comfort provided to the family during her time there.

Maria B. Luna was called Home to the Lord on February 14, 2023 at the age of 87. She was born on October 22, 1935 to Maria (Salazar) and Federico Bencomo in Seguin, Texas.

Maria was a hardworking woman. She was employed at Holly Farms for many years, in addition to several other jobs. She enjoyed going dancing in her younger days with her husband and other couples.

Maria loved her children deeply. She went out of her way to be sure they came home to hot meals even when her children were grown, married, and no longer living at home. She was a God-fearing woman and prayed for God to watch over her children and their families.

Mom will be deeply missed but we are left with the comfort and confidence that she has arrived to Heaven where she will sing and dance once again in the company of he loved ones that are joyful to welcome her in heaven.

Maria is preceded in death by her parents, Federico and Maria; sons, Guadalupe B. Luna, Jr., Henry B. Luna (Christina Luna, surviving) and daughter, Lucia L. Gallegos (David Gallegos, surviving).

Left to cherish her memory is her husband of 70 years of marriage, Guadalupe M. Luna; children, David B. Luna and fiancé, Anita Mindieta, Gloria Gallegos (late husband Robert), and Angie Torres and husband Frank. 26 grandchildren, 60 greatgrandchildren, 23 great-great grandchildren and 4 great-great grandchildren on the way; sister, Virginia Contreras; half-sisters, Olivia Jackson, Ofelia Ybanez as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

East Palestine, Ohio Residents Concerned For Their Health

(East Palestine, OH) -- The town of East Palestine [[ pal-eh-steen ]], Ohio will be receiving more help after a train derailment released toxic materials earlier this month. The Pennsylvania Democrat voluntarily checked himself into Walter Reed National Military Medical Center to receive treatment last week. In a tweet, Biden offered his support and said getting the necessary care is “brave and important.” He said he’s grateful to Fetterman for “leading by example.” Fetterman’s office said the senator has experienced depression off and on throughout his life, which became severe in recent weeks.

Illinois Gov Signs Bill Making It Easier To Change Gender On Birth Certificate

(Springfield, IL) -- An updated Illinois law makes it easier for individuals attempting to change the gender listed on their birth certificate. Governor JB Pritzker has signed a measure that allows changes to the birth certificate providing the petitioner signs a statement affirming their gender identity or intersex condition. Previously, amending a birth certificate’s gender marker required certification from a health care professional that the individual had undergone gender reassignment surgery or other clinical treatment.

Thousands Of Starbucks Vanilla Frappuccino Drinks Recalled

(Undated) -- More than 300-thousand Starbucks vanilla Frappuccino drinks are being recalled. That’s according to the FDA, which says it’s because glass was found in some bottles. The recall affects bottles with an expiration date of March 8th, May 29th, June 4th and June 10th of this year. A spokesperson from PepsiCo, which produces and distributes the coffee chain products, says marketplaces are in the process of removing the product from their shelves.
