(Seguin) -- Mardi Gras might have been on Feb. 13 but here in Seguin, the celebration is just getting started. Tickets are still available for tonight’s Seguin Education Foundation’s Mardi Gras 2024 fundraiser. The event will be held from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Seguin Coliseum. The celebration, an annual tradition for the SEF, lends itself to a night of live and silent auctions, raffles, music, Cajun food plus New Orleans Hurricanes to help wash it all down. Encouraging folks to grab a mask and join them tonight is Event CoChair Bryan Spahn. Spahn says the event is a night were businesses and the community come together in support of local kids. “We’ve got the Dirty River Jazz Band coming who are just exceptional. Lots of local people love
to hear them. If you are a fan of theirs, that’s just a great reason to come and we have some great auction items this year. Just on the live auction which you can go online and do, we’ve got tickets to Astros games, Rangers games and all kinds of things that you can do around town. So, that’s a great way if you can’t actually physically be there, you can go online and help support us too,” said Spahn. Spahn says the Seguin Education Foundation for years has supported classroom learning by providing grants. He says teachers apply for the money with hopes of providing new and innovative classroom tools for their students. “As a husband of a teacher, I’ve seen first hand how they react when they are getting the grants and then just to see how that rolls over to the kids Mardi Gras, pg. 3

The Seguin Daily News continues to highlight the local candidates appearing on the March 5, 2024 Primary Election Ballot. Each candidate was asked to respond to the following three questions. Early voting began on Tuesday, Feb. 20 and runs through Friday, March 1. Today’s featured contest includes two of the five candidates vying for the Republican nomination for Guadalupe County Commissioner Pct. 1. The remaining three candidates, Dustin Engelke, Bryan Underwood and Jacqueline “Jackie” Ott will appear in Friday’s Seguin Daily News. All five candidates look to replace longtime Commissioner Greg Seidenberger who has chosen to retire. The winner of this GOP nomination will earn the right to face the Democratic nominee, Nahomie Alanis; and the Libertarian nominee, Nolan Schmidt, who are both running unopposed for the nominations of their respective parties.

The departure of Mr. Greg Seidenberger will create a vacancy that cannot be overlooked, considering his remarkable dedication and service to this precinct. His absence leaves a void that needs to be filled by someone equally committed and passionate about the welfare of our community. Like Mr. Seidenberger, I too possess a servant heart and a deep-seated desire to serve the people of Precinct 1. I believe in the importance of being present within the community, listening to its concerns, and actively working towards solutions. Building relationships of trust is not just a political strategy; it’s a fundamental aspect of effective governance. As commissioner, I will make sure that all roads are a priority and will constantly communicate with TXDOT regarding needed improvements for our state-maintained roads. This includes pressuring them to properly control the numerous unsafe intersections around the county. Our rapid growth must be effectively managed to preserve our quality of life. Local museum to feature Black history Special exhibit to help welcome church visitors to Seguin Cindy Aguirre-Herrera
(Seguin) -- What started off as a tribute to a local church has now evolved into an entire display of the history and accomplishments of the African American community here in Seguin and Guadalupe County. Shirley Fennell, along with other members of the Greater Refuge III Church of Our Lord Jesus Christ, continue to work on that display this week at the Seguin Heritage Museum located in downtown Seguin. Fennell says the group has the honor of adding to the display recognizing the faithbased accomplishments of the late Bishop J.P. Steadman and wife Ethel who started their ministry in Seguin in the 1950s. The display marking the couple's local contributions will help welcome a bus load of International Church of Our Lord Jesus Christ Apostles. Fennell says the church members -- from across the country will be arriving at the museum this Friday afternoon. She says they’ll be traveling in from San Antonio where they will be participating in this year’s regional conference.

It started off with just that exhibit of Bishop J.P. Steadman and Ethel Steadman and it is beautiful. It was put together with the family and the people here and it just kind of extended to include as many blacks that have done things -- that have lived in Seguin and could be proud of what was done," said Fennell. Getting them outside off of electronics and that’s going to be a huge part of what we are raising for this year and lots of people in Seguin know the Irma Lewis Center.

This year’s Golden Ticket winner will also be chosen at tonight’s Mardi Gras celebration. Tickets for the raffle are $100 each. The winner will get to choose from four vacation destinations. Those travel destinations include Cabo, Puerto Vallarta; Tuscany, Italy and Las Vegas. Ticketholders do not need to be present to win and only 100 tickets will be sold. Cost for tonight’s Mardi Gras celebration is $50 and includes food and drink. Both the Golden Ticket and Mardi Gras tickets can be purchased online by visiting the Seguin Education Foundation Facebook page. Additionally, fostering strong relationships with both cities within the county and neighboring counties will be crucial for managing growth effectively. Collaboration and cooperation will be key in addressing common challenges and maximizing opportunities for development. Another pressing concern is the county budget, which directly impacts property taxes. I believe in conducting a thorough analysis of the budget, carefully considering the implications of policy changes, to ensure that we can keep property tax rates as low as possible while still meeting the needs of our community. By taking a proactive and thoughtful approach to these challenges, I am confident that we can navigate them successfully and build a brighter future for our county.
I would also be supportive of revising our subdivision rules and regulations to bring more accountability to the developers. We must partner with the various municipalities in the county to ensure that we are growing in a responsible manner. Growth is inevitable, but we must make sure to go about it the right way. Our law enforcement and first responders must be supported and adequately funded to ensure public safety. I will advocate for them, ensuring they have all the resources needed to properly do their job. Everyone in this community deserves to feel safe. I will fight to keep our tax rate low and will identify fiscal waste in the budget and move to eliminate it. It is also important to find money in the budget for public safety and infrastructure needs. We can use the growth in the tax base to fund those essential needs and not increase taxes.
Why do you believe you are the best candidate for the job? In other words, what do you believe sets you apart from your opponents? What sets me apart from my opponents is my unwavering belief that Precinct 1 deserves a full-time commissioner who embodies honesty, hard work, and dedication to serving all residents. My extensive experience in civil engineering projects has given me a unique perspective on how these projects impact local communities over time, which is essential for Guadalupe County. Having worked my way up through the ranks, I understand the importance of teamwork and collaboration. Having spent almost a decade in the Guadalupe County Road and Bridge Department, I intimately understand the condition of our county roads and the significance of proactive planning. I believe in leading by example, which is why I actively participate in local food bank distribution events in Seguin and work with a local Texas Ramp Project group to build wheelchair ramps for those with mobility issues, thereby enhancing their freedom at home. Recognizing the importance of youth for the county’s future, I volunteer on the Seguin ISD School Health Advisory Council (SHAC) to ensure that our community’s values are reflected in health education instruction. With my combination of experience, vision, and dedication, I am prepared to lead Precinct 1 into a brighter future.
Why do you believe you are the best candidate for the job? In other words, what do you believe sets you apart from your opponents? My business leadership has been successful due to methodical and sensible management. Additionally, overseeing a multimillion-dollar business including supervising employees, preparing budgets, and making tough decisions will be an asset to county government. I fostered relationships as well as created a sense of teamwork between all employees in the business world. If elected, I will step away from my business roles and focus on being a full-time commissioner. I will be very accessible and plan to host a monthly evening gathering at local eateries to share updates, news, and plans, as well as hear concerns and receive feedback to take back to the court. Most residents are working during commissioner’s court meetings, and this will give them an opportunity to communicate with me in a casual environment. I genuinely and deeply care about this community and will not see this as just a job. Through my community involvement, I engage with people from all walks of life and political affiliations. They can count on me to be a voice for them. I plan to live here for the remainder of my life and will always do what is best for our county and its residents. Jackson named to Texas sports writers all-state football teams Chris Austin
(College Station, TX) -- Three area student-athletes were named to Texas Sports Writers Association All-State Football Teams this month. Navarro High School senior Gabriel Rangel was selected to the Class 4A All-State Third Team on defense in the secondary. Rangel’s teammate senior Mack Berry was named an honorable mention on offense as a tight end. And Seguin High School senior John Jackson was picked as an honorable mention at running back on the Class 5A team. Rangel intercepted eight passes for the Panther defense this season including two pick-sixes. Rangel had 45 total tackles including two for loss in 13 games played. He also returned a kickoff 89 yards for a
touchdown. Rangel was recognized twice on the All-District 27-4A team as a defensive back and kick returner. Berry was a threat for the Navarro Slot-T offense and was also selected to the all-district
first team as a tight end. Berry caught 12 passes for 309 yards in 12 games for an outstanding 25.8 yards per reception. He caught a 57-yard TD pass in the Panthers’ victory over Port Isabel in the Area Round of the UIL playoffs. Jackson, named the 2023 District 12-5A Offensive MVP, established a new Seguin High School single-season program record with 1784 yards rushing in 10 games this past season. He averaged 8.7 yards per carry and led the Matadors with 17 touchdowns. He was named was named Mr. Matador – Team MVP at the Seguin football banquet in December. The Texas Sports Writers Association is made up of sports writers and sports editors from daily and weekly newspapers from across the state of Texas as well as sports internet services.

Margaret Kyle Hopkins, age 92 of Seguin, Texas formerly of Beaumont, Texas passed away on February 12, 2024. Margaret, also known as “Meg” and “Mom” was born in Beaumont, Texas June 30, 1931, to Jules and Brudge Kyle. She attended Mary Baldwin Women’s College for 1 year and then the University of Texas for 3 years where she was a Phi Beta Pi and studied language arts. While at the University of Texas, she met the love of her life, Wallace Kimbrough Hopkins (Wally). Margaret married Wally on February 2, 1952, at St. Marks Episcopal Church in Beaumont, Texas. Soon after their wedding, they moved to El Centro California where they lived in a Quonset hut for 3 years while Wally served in the Navy. This is where they had their firstborn child, Pam. Many memories were shared about the Quonset hut time of their lives and how happy they were making the best of their time together. Margaret and Wally then moved to Beaumont, Texas where they welcomed their second and third-born children, Brudge and Kim, and spent the remainder of their married life together until Wally died in 2002. Margaret then moved to Seguin to be closer to family. Margaret enjoyed being a member of the Beaumont Jr. League, Magnolia Garden Club, and served on the Garden Committee at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church where she loved beautifying the church grounds. Margaret and Wally raised their 3 children in the Episcopal Church and supported each of them throughout life by encouraging them and attending activities, school events, weddings, births, and child-raising support. Margaret loved to travel, spend time in the kitchen, and gardening, and reading countless books. She traveled the world with Wally, her family, and friends creating countless special moments in all our lives. Margaret also loved to play tennis and had a great circle of tennis friends she played with weekly, including some of her and Wally’s best friends the Coffins and Dishman’s. Margaret and Wally loved to spend weekends at Lakeway where they spent many summers water skiing on Lake Travis, playing tennis, and attending Longhorn football games with their children and grandchildren. When they were not at Lakeway, they enjoyed spending many summers in Breckenridge, Colorado with friends and family watching hummingbirds, playing tennis, and enjoying the cool Colorado air. She spent much time with her family at El Paraiso Ranch in Bandera, Texas where she hosted the family and many generations of friends with her amazing recipes, keeping the hummingbird feeders filled, feeding deer and threw out thousands upon thousands of bluebonnet seeds. Though this bluebonnet effort was somewhat unsuccessful, she continued her efforts.
Margaret’s passion, vigor, and overall sunny disposition throughout her life brought joy to all those surrounding her. Her generosity, graciousness, kindness, and willingness to adventure set examples for many to follow. She was never a quitter and lived a life of positivity, always making the most of any situation. Most recently, slowed by an aging body, she never complained, but instead continued to use her life doing things she loved. With the help of caregivers, she never stopped making gumbo, crawfish etouffee, baking rounds of cookies, and cakes, planting new flowers, and preparing her garden. She had already begun to prepare for this year’s tomato crop with new plants in the dirt. She compiled a cookbook in 2023 and a 2nd cookbook near completion. Margaret is preceded in death by her parents, Jules and Brudge Kyle, her husband Wallace Kimbrough Hopkins, her daughter Pam Hopkins Lock, her sister, Mary Kyle, sister-in-law, Mary Elizabeth Hill, brother in law George Hopkins. She is survived by her son, Brudge Kyle Hopkins, daughter, Kim Hopkins Mueller and her husband Bernie, her sister-in-law, Jane Hopkins and her 5 grandchildren who she loved dearly, Julie Lock Lambert, her husband Peter, Christy Lock Sutton, her husband Andrew, Brian John Lock, Amber Mueller Wendt, her husband Michael, Kyle Joseph Mueller and his wife Alyssa. Lastly, Margaret is survived by 5 great-grandchildren whom she adored, Henry and Clyde Lambert, Madison Sutton, Margaret, and Eleanor Wendt. The family wishes to express our thanks to the wonderful caregivers, healthcare providers, and other individuals who have helped her continue to live life joyfully: Kimberly, Stacy, Rachael, Ingrid, Regina, Victoria, Gloria, Adrian, Josephine, Chon, and Manuel. We also want to thank Dr. Thomas Raetzsch and his staff for their care and love. Though our hearts are deeply saddened that our Meg and precious Mother is no longer with us, we can’t help but celebrate that she is now in a heavenly place with her love Wally. White House Announces $5.8B Clean Water Funding (Washington, DC) -- The Biden administration is announcing nearly six-billion-dollars for clean water infrastructure. The money, from the bipartisan infrastructure law, will be administered by the EPA to help provide clean drinking water to homes and businesses, including the replacement of lead pipes. EPA Administrator Michael Regan will join Vice President Harris in Pittsburgh today to outline the plan. Study Links Antidepressants To Child Brain Problems (Aurora, CO) -- Taking antidepressants like Prozac while pregnant can hinder a child’s brain development and possibly cause mental disorders later in life. That’s the findings in a new study published last week in the journal Nature Communications. Experts say antidepressants that raise serotonin levels can influence how the brain learns and adjusts. But they also say that these medications should not be stopped or changed except in consultation with the prescribing doctor. Report: Arizona Facing Major Nursing Shortage (Phoenix, AZ) -- Arizoa is facing a major nursing shortage. That’s according to a report by the National Center for Health Workforce Analysis, which claims Arizona will have roughly 28-thousand fewer registered nurses than it will require in 2025. That means Arizona will be under the biggest nursing shortage in the entire country. The Arizona Nurses Association told KTAR not having nurses where they are needed is essentially a “public health crisis.” The group also noted the shortage of nurses is being felt the most in emergency rooms and urgent care buildings. Alabama High Court Rules On Definition Of Child (Montgomery, AL) -- The Alabama Supreme Court is ruling frozen embryos are children. The decision reverses a dismissal over wrongful death claims in Mobile. The case stems back to 2022, when several couples filed a lawsuit after frozen embryos were dropped on the floor by a patient at a hospital. The couples are still seeking punitive damages.
